Notes: Latexes based on styrene-glycidyl methacrylate copolymers were prepared by the emulsifier-free dispersion copolymerization technique. The main factors affecting the size and morphology of the latex particles and their distribution are the initiator concentration (K2S2O8), the total ionic strength of the aqueous phase, and the total monomer concentration. The existence of critical values for these variables was demonstrated. In the range in which these factors had values below the critical, the synthesized latex particles were spherical, homogeneous, and in varied sizes, depending on the abovementioned parameters in the range of 220-500 nm. Above the critical values of these variables the latex particles consisted of spherical aggregates of smaller particles. The reactive oxirane groups of the latex particles were modified later by hydrolysis, ammonolysis, reaction with Na2S, or periodic acid oxidation of the hydrolyzed or ammonolyzed forms of the latex particles.

Notes: Kinetic Investigations of the Pyrolysis of Mono-n-alkyl-cyclohexanesThe thermal decomposition of cyclohexane and six mono-n-alkylcyclohexanes was studied kinetically in a metallic laboratory tubular reactor at 650 to 850°C and atmospheric pressure.Kinetic parameters were found to be a function of length of the alkylic side chain. A comparison with analogous parameters of n-paraffins and the unsubstituted cyclohexane allowed the conclusion that C—C-scission in the alkylic chain is the initial reaction in pyrolysis of n-alkylcyclohexanes followed by radical attacks to all C—H-bonds of the feed molecules.

Description: Preliminary results from Seasat radar altimetry over Antarctica north of 72 deg S and Greenland south of 72 deg N are presented. Surface elevations of the ice sheets, obtained from computer retracking of the radar altimeter waveforms, are contoured at 50-m intervals for Greenland and at 100-m intervals for Antarctica. Elevation differences at orbital crossover points are analyzed to obtain a precision of 1.9 m; this figure is partly determined by radial errors of approximately 1.0 m in orbital determination and partly by noise due to ice surface irregularities. Adjustment of the radial components of the orbits to minimize the differences in elevations at crossovers over a small, relatively flat region reduces the rms difference to 0.25 m, which is indicative of the optimum precision obtainable over the ice sheets. However, the precision degrades as the slope of the surface or amplitude of the undulations increases, yielding an overall precision of + or - 1.6 m.

Notes: The reversible isomerization of poly(chloromethylthiirane) and poly(3-chlorothietane) represents a new kind of polymer reaction and a new method of copolymer synthesis. In chloroform, in dichloromethane, or in nitrobenzene the reaction is well described by reversible first-order kinetics. A rate increase of ca. 40% on changing the solvent from chloroform to nitrobenzene is consistent with an isomerization mechanism that involves a rate-determining attack of the backbone sulfur atom on the neighboring carbon-chlorine bond and rapid ring-opening of the thiiranium ion intermediate by chloride ion.

Notes: A saturated triblock copolymer, poly(styrene-block-ethylene-co-butylene-block-styrene) was chemically crosslinked using trimethylol propane trimethacrylate, TMPTM, and subjected to electron beam radiation. The gel percent, Gehman ten second modulus, and stress relaxation were measured to characterize the materials as a function of crosslinker concentration and radiation level. A time-temperature super-position master curve was generated at 63°C for 3 percent TMPTM and 5 Mrads of radiation, which indicated rubbery plateau behavior at long times of measurement, as opposed to the uncrosslinked material, which continued to creep and flow. The main locus of crosslinking was within the polystyrene phase, which explains reduced creep and stress relaxation only for long times of measurement and/or high temperatures. Based on shifts of the glass transition temperatures, it was estimated that 11 to 16 percent poly(ethylene-co-butylene) was dissolved in the polystyrene phase.

Description: Using the recently completed JTLA absolute gravity meter, we made a survey of twelve sites in the United States. Over a period of eight weeks, the instrument was driven a total distance of nearly 20,000 km to sites in California, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Maryland and Massachusetts. The time spent in carrying out a measurement at a single location was typically one day. We report the results of the measurements in this survey along with earlier measurements made with the instrument, discuss the measurement accuracy and compare our results with other measurements. Previously announced in STAR as N83-20480

Description / Table of Contents: 31P and 195Pt N.M.R. Investigations on Diplatinum (I) Complexes of the Type [Pt2(μ-SPR2)2L2] (L = PR3, PhP(OPh)2, P(OPh)3, CNR)31P-, 195Pt-chemical shifts and 195Pt-31P- resp. 31P-31P-coupling constants of a series of doubly bridged diplatinum(I) complexes are reported. 31P-coordination chemical shifts of the terminal ligands of complexes of type [Pt2(μ-SPR2)2(P′R3′)2] and some of the various coupling constants are strongly influenced by the π-acceptor strength of these ligands. J(195Pt-195Pt) is found to change the sign among the series of complexes investigated. Thermal singlett triplet exitation giving rise to the paramagnetism of these complexes observed by preliminary EPR-measurements and confirmed by EHT-calculations is deduced from the large values of 2J(P-P′) and 3J(P′P′) as well as the unusually high temperature dependence of some coupling constants and other NMR features. The chemical stability of the doubly bridged core, the coordination shifts of the bridging phosphorus atoms and EHT-calculations suggest a view of aromaticity of the [Pt2(μ-SPR2)2](M-M) unit of these complexes.

Description: Aircraft measurements were made of trace gases, atmospheric particles, and condensed acid volatiles in the plume of El Chichon volcano, Chiapas, Mexico, in November 1982. Hydrogen sulfide was the primary gaseous sulfur species in the plume at the time of collection. Concentrations of 28 elements were determined by neutron activation analysis of particulate material from the plume. The volatile elements sulfur, chlorine, arsenic, selenium, bromine, antimony, iodine, tungsten, and mercury were enriched relative to bulk pyroclastic material by factors of 60 to 20,000. Arsenic, antimony, and selenium were associated predominantly with small (not greater than 3 micrometer) particles. Calcium and sodium were present almost exclusively on larger particles and aluminum and manganese were bimodally distributed. Ashladen particulate material injected into the stratosphere during the early violent eruptions was enriched by factors of 10 to 30 relative to ash in some of the same elements observed in the quiescent plume.

Notes: The effect of methanethiol (CH3SH) on the radiation chemistry of low-density polyethylene was examined by using intrinsic viscosity measurements, low-angle laser light scattering, and infrared spectrophotometry. Radiation-induced intermolecular linking was found to be almost completely inhibited in low-density polyethylene by the presence of less than one weight percent of CH3SH during irradiation. The net yield of transvinylene was also reduced, probably by reaction of transvinylenes with methylthiyl radicals (CH3S). The inhibition of radiation-induced intermolecular linking by CH3SH demonstrates that linking is a relatively slow process involving reactions of alkyl free radicals, and that prompt intermolecular links caused by rapid ionic, ion-molecule, or “hot hydrogen” processes are not significant in the radiation chemistry of low-density polyethylene.
