Description: In vitro fertilization, in its first 5 years of use, has met minimum standards for efficacy and safety, as judged by published clinical reports. It is becoming more widely available as an approach for overcoming sterility in married couples and appears also to be gaining social acceptance in that context. Several technical options presented by the procedure, particularly storage of frozen embryos and embryo transfers involving third-party contributions, are less fully evaluated clinically and raise social, ethical, and legal questions that go beyond the original medical model for therapeutic intervention. The clinical success of in vitro fertilization and the options it affords call for careful policy consideration. Estimates of costs and of potential demand for and supply of services are provided and the current status of relevant policy in the United States and abroad is discussed.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Grobstein, C -- Flower, M -- Mendeloff, J -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Oct 14;222(4620):127-33.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6623063" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Given the ready clinical and public acceptance ; of IVF, there is need for an oversight mechanism at the federal level, perhaps ; via a forum concerned also with the overlapping area of human genetic ; intervention.

Description: Recent advances in biotechnology have created many public policy and legal issues, one of the most significant of which is the treatment of biotechnological industrial products, particularly under the patent system. Patents represent one of several types of intellectual property; their ownership confers the right to exclude others from benefitting from the tangible products of a proprietary subject matter. Intellectual property law and its protections will play a major role in the rate at which biotechnology develops in the United States. In this article biotechnological intellectual property issues are reviewed in the context of their underlying legal requirements. The implications of other factors, such as international competition, research funding, and gene ownership, are also considered.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Adler, R G -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1984 Apr 27;224(4647):357-63.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6584975" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Procedures have now been developed for inserting functional genes into the bone marrow of mice. The most effective delivery system at present uses retroviral-based vectors to transfer a gene into murine bone marrow cells in culture. The genetically altered bone marrow is then implanted into recipient animals. These somatic cell gene therapy techniques are becoming increasingly efficient. Their future application in humans should result in at least partial correction of a number of genetic disorders. However, the safety of the procedures must still be established by further animal studies before human clinical trials would be ethical.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Anderson, W F -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1984 Oct 26;226(4673):401-9.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6093246" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Anderson, chief of the Laboratory of Molecular Hematology at the National ; Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, examines how soon gene therapy might be ; available for the treatment of diseases in humans, and what criteria should be ; met before experimentation with human subjects begins. He identifies delivery, ; gene expression, and safety as the three requisites that must be satisfied, and ; reviews the animal work that has been done in these areas. Human trials should ; begin only after more animal studies have demonstrated to local and federal ; review committees that gene therapy is safe and offers the possibility of benefit ; to patients.

A group of scientists, ; military analysts, and arms control experts discussed types of biological ; research projects funded by the Department of Defense which could be diverted to ; the production of relatively efficient, inexpensive new weapons. Most of the ; panelists challenged the Pentagon's claim that biological weapons are currently ; being developed by the Soviet Union.
