Description: 2'-Fluoro-5-methyl-l-beta-D-arabinosyluracil (FMAU) labeled with carbon-14 was used to image herpes simplex virus type 1-infected regions of rat brain by quantitative autoradiography. FMAU is a potent antiviral pyrimidine nucleoside which is selectively phosphorylated by virus-coded thymidine kinase. When the labeled FMAU was administered 6 hours before the rats were killed, the selective uptake and concentration of the drug and its metabolites by infected cells (defined by immunoperoxidase staining of viral antigens) allowed quantitative definition and mapping of HSV-1-infected structures in autoradiograms of brain sections. These results show that quantitative autoradiography can be used to characterize the local metabolism of antiviral drugs by infected cells in vivo. They also suggest that the selective uptake of drugs that exploit viral thymidine kinase for their antiviral effect can, by appropriate labeling, be used in conjunction with clinical neuroimaging techniques to define infected regions of human brain, thereby providing a new approach to the diagnosis of herpes encephalitis in man.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Saito, Y -- Price, R W -- Rottenberg, D A -- Fox, J J -- Su, T L -- Watanabe, K A -- Philips, F S -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1982 Sep 17;217(4565):1151-3.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7112121" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The rates of activation and deactivation of the currents carried by calcium, strontium, or barium ions through the voltage-sensitive calcium channel of Paramecium are different. The differences cannot be attributed to complications due to internal ion concentration, calcium channel inactivation, potassium current activation, surface charge effects, or incomplete space clamping. The findings indicate participation of the divalent cations in the voltage-driven calcium channel gating process.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Saimi, Y -- Kung, C -- GM22714/GM/NIGMS NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1982 Oct 8;218(4568):153-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6289432" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Although most sensory neurons convey temporally coded impulses to the central nervous system, certain nonspiking receptors use only graded afferent signals. Each of three large nerve fibers from the lobster oval organ, a mechanoreceptor subserving ventilation, carry both impulses and graded potentials. Thus, both impulse frequency and receptor potential amplitude are available for information transfer.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Pasztor, Y M -- Bush, B M -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1982 Mar 26;215(4540):1635-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7071583" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Polyamines putrescine, spermidine, and spermine specifically inhibit the PK 380--catalyzed phosphorylation of eukaryotic initiation factor 2 alpha (eIF-2 alpha). Since te PK 380--dependent phosphorylation of eIF-2 alpha inhibits the initiation or protein synthesis, the possibility exists that the polyamines enhance protein synthesis by inhibiting the phosphorylation of eIF-2 alpha by PK 380.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Kuroda, Y -- Merrick, W C -- Sharma, R K -- CA-16091/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- GM-26796/GM/NIGMS NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1982 Jan 22;215(4531):415-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7058326" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: A unilateral microinjection of adrenocorticotropin 1-24 in the rat brainstem in the region of the locus ceruleus resulted in postural asymmetry and movement disorder that resembled human dystonia, the severity and duration (2 to 3 days) being dose-dependent. These results show for the first time that neuropeptides in the brainstem may modulate posture and movement, and they suggest that some forms of movement disorder such as dystonia may be due to a disordered regulation of postural and locomotor mechanisms by adrenocorticotropin 1-24.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Jacquet, Y F -- Abrams, G M -- K07 00478/PHS HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1982 Oct 8;218(4568):175-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6289433" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The oligonucleotide (2'-5') oligoadenylate that is induced in interferon-treated animal cells protects plant tissue from infection by the tobacco mosaic virus. This inhibition of virus multiplication was obtained at concentrations comparable to those affecting protein synthesis and antiviral activities in animal cells. After treatment with (2'-5') oligoadenylate, the multiplicability of tobacco mosaic virus was reduced by 80 to 90 percent as measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. These results, along with the observation that human interferon protects tobacco tissue from infection by tobacco mosaic virus, indicate that plants and animals may have a common pathway for virus resistance.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Devash, Y -- Biggs, S -- Sela, I -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1982 Jun 25;216(4553):1415-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6178155" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: After monolayer cultures of rat islets were exposed to [(125)I]insulin,[(125)I]glucagon, and [(125)I]tyrosinyl somatostatin, specific autoradiographic grains associated with each radioactively labeled ligand were found on B, A, and D cells. The density of labeling of the B, A, and D cells with each labeled ligand correlated well with the known actions of the three hormones on each of the islet cells.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Patel, Y C -- Amherdt, M -- Orci, L -- AM 21373/AM/NIADDK NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1982 Sep 17;217(4565):1155-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6126003" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description / Table of Contents: Sila-Perfumes, 21)  -  Sila-LinaloolMethyl(4-methyl-3-pentenyl)vinylsilanol (2), the sila derivative of the naturally occuring linalool (1), could be prepared from dichloro(methyl)vinylsilane following the outlined method. The intensity of odour of 2 is similar to that of 1 but its note is somewhat shifted from the fragrance of lilies of the valley to that of hyacinths. Furthermore, a forerunner of 2 (chlorosilane 4), a reaction product of 2 (disiloxane 6), and some compounds from parallel investigations, e. g. the chlorosilane 3 or the morpholino silane 5, are described.

Description / Table of Contents: Geminal Diphosphonic Acids Containing Amidino GroupsThe reaction of amides or nitriles with H3PO3/PCl3 leads in some cases to the formation of amidinoalkylidenediphosphonic acids. In the case of formamide under specific conditions, amidino-methylenediphosphonic acid (4) is formed, with succin- or glutaramides (or with the nitriles) the heterocyclic, geminal diphosphonic acids 10 are obtained. By the reaction of 2-pyrrolidinone 12 with PCl3/H2O in addition to the expected 2,2-pyrrolidinylidenediphosphonic acid (11a) an amidine is isolated, for which the structure 15 is suggested. The alkaline hydrolyses of these compounds and the corresponding reaction products are described.
