    Notes: The gas-lift technique comprises the injection of gas bubbles in vertical oil wells to increase production. It is based on a reduction of the tubing gravitational pressure gradient. Several fluid-flow phenomena influencing such vertical gas-liquid flows are discussed. These effects include the radial distribution of void fraction and of gas and liquid velocity, flow regime changes, and system stability problems. Associated consequences for gas-lift performance and related optimization approaches are also discussed.

    Notes: What mechanisms of flow control do animals use to enhance hydrodynamic performance? Animals are capable of manipulating flow around the body and appendages both passively and actively. Passive mechanisms rely on structural and morphological components of the body (i.e., humpback whale tubercles, riblets). Active flow control mechanisms use appendage or body musculature to directly generate wake flow structures or stiffen fins against external hydrodynamic loads. Fish can actively control fin curvature, displacement, and area. The vortex wake shed by the tail differs between eel-like fishes and fishes with a discrete narrowing of the body in front of the tail, and three-dimensional effects may play a major role in determining wake structure in most fishes.

    Notes: Over the past four decades, the combination of in situ and remote sensing observations has demonstrated that long nonlinear internal solitary-like waves are ubiquitous features of coastal oceans. The following provides an overview of the properties of steady internal solitary waves and the transient processes of wave generation and evolution, primarily from the point of view of weakly nonlinear theory, of which the Korteweg-de Vries equation is the most frequently used example. However, the oceanographically important processes of wave instability and breaking, generally inaccessible with these models, are also discussed. Furthermore, observations often show strongly nonlinear waves whose properties can only be explained with fully nonlinear models.

    Notes: Electrophoretic separation of a mixture of chemical species is a fundamental technique of great usefulness in biology, health care, and forensics. In capillary electrophoresis (which has evolved from its predecessor, slab-gel electrophoresis), the sample migrates through a single microcapillary instead of through the network of pores in a gel. A fundamental design problem is to minimize dispersion in the separation direction. Molecular diffusion is inevitable and sets a theoretical limit on the best separation that can be achieved. But in practice, there are a number of effects arising out of the interplay between fluid flow, chemistry, thermal effects, and electric fields that result in enhanced dispersion. This paper reviews the subject of fluid flow in such capillary microchannels and examines the various causes of enhanced dispersion that limit the efficiency of separation.

    Notes: Race car performance depends on elements such as the engine, tires, suspension, road, aerodynamics, and of course the driver. In recent years, however, vehicle aerodynamics gained increased attention, mainly due to the utilization of the negative lift (downforce) principle, yielding several important performance improvements. This review briefly explains the significance of the aerodynamic downforce and how it improves race car performance. After this short introduction various methods to generate downforce such as inverted wings, diffusers, and vortex generators are discussed. Due to the complex geometry of these vehicles, the aerodynamic interaction between the various body components is significant, resulting in vortex flows and lifting surface shapes unlike traditional airplane wings. Typical design tools such as wind tunnel testing, computational fluid dynamics, and track testing, and their relevance to race car development, are discussed as well. In spite of the tremendous progress of these design tools (due to better instrumentation, communication, and computational power), the fluid dynamic phenomenon is still highly nonlinear, and predicting the effect of a particular modification is not always trouble free. Several examples covering a wide range of vehicle shapes (e.g., from stock cars to open-wheel race cars) are presented to demonstrate this nonlinear nature of the flow field.

    Notes: Large-eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent combustion is a relatively new research field. Much research has been carried out over the past years, but to realize the full predictive potential of combustion LES, many fundamental questions still have to be addressed, and common practices of LES of nonreacting flows revisited. The focus of the present review is to highlight the fundamental differences between Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and LES combustion models for nonpremixed and premixed turbulent combustion, to identify some of the open questions and modeling issues for LES, and to provide future perspectives.

    Notes: Mammalian fertilization requires the coordinated activity of motile spermatozoa, muscular contractions of the uterus and oviduct, as well as ciliary beating. These elastic structures generate forces that drive fluid motion, but their configurations are, in turn, determined by the fluid dynamics. We review the basic fluid mechanical aspects of reproduction, including flagellar/ciliary beating and peristalsis. We report on recent biological studies that have shed light on the relative importance of the mechanical ingredients of reproduction. In particular, we examine sperm motility in the reproductive tract, ovum pickup and transport in the oviduct, as well as sperm-egg interactions. We review recent advances in understanding the internal mechanics of cilia and flagella, flagellar surface interaction, sperm motility in complex fluids, and the role of fluid dynamics in embryo transfer. We outline promising computational fluid dynamics frameworks that may be used to investigate these complex, fluid-structure interactions.

    Notes: This article provides a critical review of computational techniques for flow-noise prediction and the underlying theories. Hybrid approaches, in which the turbulent noise source field is computed and/or modeled separately from the far-field calculation, are afforded particular attention. Numerical methods and modern flow simulation techniques are discussed in terms of their suitability and accuracy for flow-noise calculations. Other topics highlighted include some important formulation and computational issues in the application of aeroacoustic theories, generalized acoustic analogies with better accounts of flow-sound interaction, and recent computational investigations of noise-control strategies. The review ends with an analysis of major challenges and key areas for improvement in order to advance the state of the art of computational aeroacoustics.

    Notes: The challenges in understanding hypersonic flight are discussed and critical hypersonic aerothermodynamics issues are reviewed. The ability of current analytical methods, numerical methods, ground testing capabilities, and flight testing approaches to predict hypersonic flow are evaluated. The areas where aerothermodynamic shortcomings restrict our ability to design and analyze hypersonic vehicles are discussed, and prospects for future capabilities are reviewed. Considerable work still needs to be done before our understanding of hypersonic flow will allow for the accurate prediction of vehicle flight characteristics throughout the flight envelope from launch to orbital insertion.

    Notes: We review mathematical models of confined bubbles, emphasizing physical mechanisms as expressed in simple geometries. Molecular interactions between liquid, gas, and the confining solid are all important and are described through the disjoining pressure concept. Methods for finding static shapes are considered. The static solution is a springboard for discussing pressure-driven and surface-tension-driven flows, both of which involve viscous effects and macroscopic films entrained near apparent contact lines. We next discuss vapor bubbles produced by thermal effects. Vaporization localized near contact lines and condensation distributed in colder parts of the interface lead to steady vapor bubbles. Their size is determined through global constraints. Unsteady vapor bubbles are discussed and we end with thoughts on open problems.

    Notes: We review recent advances in understanding, modeling, and controlling oscillations in the flow past a cavity. The fundamental mechanisms underlying cavity flow oscillations have been known for at least 40 years, but suppressing these oscillations in a reliable and robust way is still a challenge today. Interest in controlling the flow past a cavity is motivated by aerospace applications, but in addition, cavity flows provide an attractive canonical problem for exploring general flow control techniques. The focus is on recent advances in modeling these flows, and in controlling them, using both open-loop and closed-loop techniques. A relatively new perspective is that cavity oscillations may not always be self-sustained, but under some flow conditions may be lightly damped resonances, sustained by external disturbances such as boundary layer turbulence. Areas in which our understanding is incomplete, and which deserve further study, are discussed, in particular the effects of high-frequency open-loop forcing, fundamental limitations of feedback control for a given configuration of sensors and actuators, and the development of a feedback design methodology that respects the limited range of validity of the available dynamical models.

    Notes: When the free surfaces of most solids approach their bulk melting temperatures from below, the molecular structure of the material gives way to a disordered structure with some attributes of both the solid and liquid phases. When the temperature is sufficiently close to that of bulk transition, the surface melts and literally flows as a viscous fluid. This phenomenon, called interfacial premelting, lies at the heart of the microscopic theory of melting of solid matter, and captures the interest of condensed matter physicists and physical chemists alike. The process is ubiquitous and responsible for a wide range of consequences in materials with biological, geophysical, and technological significance. Because such systems are often exposed to spatial or temporal variations in thermodynamic forcing, there are a host of fluid mechanical phenomena that result from this underlying melting behavior. The fluid dynamics of unfrozen surfaces holds clues for understanding the bulk behavior of polycrystalline materials, from Earth's mantle to the stratosphere and beyond. In this review we focus on the fluid dynamical consequences of the premelting of solids.

    Notes: We consider the hydrodynamics of creatures capable of sustaining themselves on the water surface by means other than flotation. Particular attention is given to classifying water walkers according to their principal means of weight support and lateral propulsion. The various propulsion mechanisms are rationalized through consideration of energetics, hydrodynamic forces applied, or momentum transferred by the driving stroke. We review previous research in this area and suggest directions for future work. Special attention is given to introductory discussions of problems not previously treated in the fluid mechanics literature, with hopes of attracting physicists, applied mathematicians, and engineers to this relatively unexplored area of fluid mechanics.

    Notes: Wind tunnels have wide-ranging functionality, including many applications beyond aeronautics, and historically have been the major source of information for technological aerodynamics/aeronautical applications. There are a myriad of scaling issues/differences from flight to wind tunnel, and their study and impacts are uneven and a function of the particular type of extant flow phenomena. Typically, the most serious discrepancies are associated with flow separation. The tremendous ongoing increases in numerical simulation capability are changing and in many aspects have changed the function of the wind tunnel from a (scaled) "predictor" to a source of computational calibration/validation information with the computation then utilized as the flight prediction/scaling tool. Numerical simulations can increasingly include the influences of the various scaling issues. This wind tunnel role change has been occurring for decades as computational capability improves in all aspects. Additional issues driving this trend are the increasing cost (and time) disparity between physical experiments and computations, and increasingly stringent accuracy requirements.

    Notes: Brooke Benjamin's original theories of fluid mechanical phenomena changed our basic understanding of cavitation bubbles, surface and internal waves, gravity currents, instabilities of shear flow over flexible surfaces, and swirling flows. For some types of finite-amplitude wave phenomena, he generated integral constraints and derived new partial differential equations; by establishing their general properties he showed how they have wide application. He developed a complementary approach based on functional analysis that was quite new to fluid mechanics. He demonstrated methods for deriving, without detailed calculation, the essential features of nonlinear and indeterminate flow problems that are otherwise intractable.

    Notes: The fluid mechanics of artificial blood pumps has been studied since the early 1970s in an attempt to understand and mitigate hemolysis and thrombus formation by the device. Pulsatile pumps are characterized by inlet jets that set up a rotational "washing" pattern during filling. Strong regurgitant jets through the closed artificial heart valves have Reynolds stresses on the order of 10,000 dynes/cm2 and are the most likely cause of red blood cell damage and platelet activation. Although the flow in the pump chamber appears benign, low wall shear stresses throughout the pump cycle can lead to thrombus formation at the wall of the smaller pumps (10Đ??50 cc). The local fluid mechanics is critical. There is a need to rapidly measure or calculate the wall shear stress throughout the device so that the results may be easily incorporated into the design process.

    Notes: Homeland security involves many applications of fluid mechanics and offers many opportunities for research and development. This review explores a wide selection of fluids topics in counterterrorism and suggests future directions. Broad topics range from preparedness and deterrence of impending terrorist attacks to detection, response, and recovery. Specific topics include aircraft hardening, blast mitigation, sensors and sampling, explosive detection, microfluidics and labs-on-a-chip, chemical plume dispersal in urban settings, and building ventilation. Also discussed are vapor plumes and standoff detection, nonlethal weapons, airborne disease spread, personal protective equipment, and decontamination. Involvement in these applications requires fluid dynamicists to think across the traditional boundaries of the field and to work with related disciplines, especially chemistry, biology, aerosol science, and atmospheric science.

    Notes: Abstract— Reverse bending creep/fatigue tests have been performed on Type 316 steel at temperatures of 550 and 600°C for test durations of up to 12,000 h. It is shown that endurances obtained are comparable to those observed under push-pull conditions and that the introduction of a hold period can significantly reduce the endurance. Detailed fractography indicates that creep/fatigue in tension is more damaging than creep/fatigue in compression. The crack initiation behaviour is shown to be temperature dependent and may result from the combination of tensile and shear stresses, the relative importance of which will depend on the precise conditions of temperature, stress level and possibly microstructure.

    Notes: Abstract— Observations have been made of the threshold fatigue properties of an Al-Mg-Si casting alloy. First, it has been shown that there exists a critical value of the stress ratio, R, below which the threshold stress intensity factor decreases with increasing R but above which it is constant. Second, measurements of the cyclic crack opening displacement have been used to examine crack closure effects and to deduce the effective cyclic stress intensity factor. The two sets of data are compared with existing models for threshold phenomena.

    Notes: Fatigue crack growth experiments were carried out on 2024-T3 sheet specimens, loaded under simple variable-amplitude load sequences, including blocks of overload cycles or underload cycles and blocks of low amplitude cycles. The purpose was to study interaction effects by analysing striation measurements and shear lip developments. The striations clearly demonstrate delayed retardation. Shear lip measurements indicate significantly slower crack growth rates if the percentage shear lip increases from zero (no shear lips) to 100% (fully in the shear mode). The significance of incompatible shear lips during variable-amplitude loading is discussed. The test results are evaluated with relation to interaction mechanisms and the meaning by cycle-by-cycle prediction models.

    Notes: Microcracking of type 304 stainless steel at 538°C has been studied, in particular, the initiation, growth and coalescence, of fatigue microcracks on smooth specimens via surface replicas and photomicrographs. Quantitative information, such as, initiation period, growth and coalescence behaviour, statistical distributions of crack length, density of cracks, distribution patterns and crack growth properties, were obtained. Knowledge of these parameters is critical for the application of fracture mechanics to fatigue life assessment and the damage evaluation of structures at elevated temperature.

    Notes: Thermal fatigue under multiaxial stresses has been investigated. Circular cylindrical specimens were tested under thermal fatigue which was in-phase with axial mechanical fatigue loading. The axial forces on the specimens were varied throughout the test programme, but all the temperature cycles were identical, so various biaxial stress and strain ratios were obtained. Straight thermal fatigue cracks occurred in different directions and also net-like crazes in various patterns were observed on the surfaces of the specimens. The transient temperature, stress and strain fields have been calculated with a thermal elasto-plastic Finite Element Method. Comparing test results with calculations, it appears that the patterns of thermal fatigue cracks are dependent on the stress state and the plastic strain state, not on the strain state. The direction of cracks is perpendicular to the maximum principal stress and the maximum plastic strain. Net-like thermal fatigue crazes will occur when one principal stress is about the same as the other one and one plastic strain component is approximately equal to another.

    Notes: Abstract— The pop-in initiation and arrest behaviour in weldments of a structural steel, have been characterized with acoustic emission measurements. It was found that strong Rayleigh waves radiate from the crack tip in a preferred direction. Literature examinations and reanalysis of previous crack arrest test results, clearly indicate that the Rayleigh waves will be reflected back from edges on the crack surface and cause a crack closure effect upon arrival at the running crack tip. The phenomenon is tentatively called AUTOARREST (automatic arrest caused by release of stress waves from the crack itself).

    Notes: Abstract— This paper describes a microcomputer system that controls a multiaxial fatigue test facility. The system involves interface hardware, command control units, data acquisition units, and associated software for data processing, setting-up of test procedures and system monitoring. Without such a microcomputer system it would be impossible to acquire and analyse the vast amount of data generated by multiaxial fatigue tests, but perhaps more important, it would be impossible to control and monitor the important parameters that govern fatigue fracture behaviour of metals. This is particularly true for complex tests in which waveform shapes and out-of-phase angles can be changed during the course of a test. Finally, such a facility permits for the first time a detailed investigation of the effects of anisotropy on the deformation and fracture behaviour of metals.

    Notes: Arrays of radial cracks are sometimes observed at the bore of pressurised cylinders. The stress intensity factors of closely spaced regular arrays of edge cracks depends primarily on the crack spacing and are approximately proportional to the square root of crack spacing for crack length to spacing ratios down to 0.16. A stress intensity factor expression for this range of spacing ratios and of engineering accuracy has been developed for a large regular array of radial cracks at the bore of a pressurised cylinde. For smaller spacing ratios the stress intensity factor depends on crack length than crack spacing and a complementary expression has been developed.

    Notes: Circular-notched and sharp-notched specimens made from 304 stainless steel have been tested at 650°C. The notched specimens are subjected to both constant and cyclic loading. The cyclic loading consists of a ramp increase in load followed by constant load and ramp unloading. The cycle times are 1 min and 10 min. It is found for the circular-notched specimen that failure is dictated by the time on load and is independent of the number of cycles. Metallographic observations support the test results with fatigue damage being apparent only in the sharp-notched specimens subjected to short-time cyclic loading. Otherwise damage has the character of intergranular creep rupture.

    Notes: Abstract— The paper reports the results of a comprehensive research project concerning fatigue life prediction in fillet welded joints. Geometry variables such as main plate thickness, radius of curvature at the weld toe and leg to leg distance were analysed in detail. Fatigue life computations were carried out for semi-elliptical cracks using appropriate FE techniques. The range of results covered several types of welded joints loaded in tension and in bending. A comparison of results was made using two methods of stress intensity determination. Experimental data was also obtained and that included measurements of weld toe radius, monitoring of crack shape and S-N curves. Correlation of results with the theoretical predictions gave generally good agreement. A set of fatigue design curves for fillet welded joints is proposed and in these the designer can introduce the geometry of the weldment.

    Notes: Abstract— The effects of the changes of crack shapes on the behaviour of small cracks were investigated on single edge crack specimens and small surface crack specimens with different initial crack shapes. Experimental results obtained from beach mark measurements on the fracture surfaces indicated that the behaviour of small cracks was strongly dependent on the crack shape itself. While the initial shape of a small crack was unstable with respect to the state of specimen-geometry-stress system, the crack gradually adjusted its shape to a specific preferred shape by means of non-uniform growth. In addition, the deceleration and subsequent acceleration of crack growth corresponds to the transition from unstable to stable crack growth.

    Notes: Surface evolution in polycrystalline copper specimens with a shallow notch has been studied in interrupted constant strain amplitude cyclic loading. The inhomogeneous strain distribution close to stress amplitude saturation leads to the formation of extrusions and intrusions along persistent slip bands within the grain and also in suitably oriented grain boundaries. Numerous primary cracks within a grain or at a grain boundary are nucleated. Some cracks can grow further either by linking with existing cracks or by nucleation of new elementary cracks ahead of the crack tip. Crack growth rates of individual cracks fluctuate considerably but for each strain amplitude, which results in a saturated plastic strain amplitude, a crack growth rate of an equivalent crack can be established. This crack growth rate was found to depend strongly on the plastic strain amplitude in agreement with the Manson-Coffin law.

    Notes: WASH 1 is composed of a defined series of six seastates for a yearly return period; the two lowests seastates 1 and 2 being eliminated, because they do not influence the fatigue life of offshore structures, and the three highest seastates 8, 9 and 10 were combined. The sequence and the duration of the resultant six seastates correspond also to long term observations in the North Sea. A generated load history with the power spectrum of the strain measuremnts used as a basis, is the result for each seastate. The return period of the standardized load history WASH 1 decided upon is 5 × 105 cycles coresponding to one year of wave loads. It is fixed sequence of peaks recorded on tape. Testing frequency and signal shape are optional. The basis for the derivation of standardized load histories is always formed by strain histories measured in operation. WASH 1 was derived on the basis of strain measurements on the FRIGG DP2 platform of IFREMER, Brest, supplemented by measurements of Germanischer Lloyd, Hamburg, on the Research Platform NORDSEE. As even comprehensive measurements can only be samples over a limited period of time, the strain measuremments were supported by the results of long-term observations of seastates in the North Sea.

    Notes: The relationship between microstructure and the fatigue behaviour of small cracks has been examined for the aluminium–lithium alloys 8090 and 8091 after peak ageing at 170°C. Duplex ageing and pre-stretching were used to vary the distribution of S'precipitates and thus the distribution of slip. No effect of S'distribution an small crack growth was observed in either alloy. This is thought to be due to a combination of the lack of closure and lower overall slip reversibility in small cracks. Small cracks in 8091 were found to grow slower than in 8090 due to differences in grain shape rather than texture. Small cracks in both alloys were observed to grow much faster than long cracks for equivalent ΔKs. This difference was reduced when small crack data were compared with long crack data generated at R= 0.7 due to the reduced closure. The use of ΔJ made long and small crack growth rates still more comparable.

    Notes: Abstract— The initiation and growth of cracks emanating from blunt notches in 6061-Al alloy reinforced with 25% particulate Sic metal matrix composite were investigated. To elucidate the role of aging condition of the matrix on the fatigue behavior, the studies were carried out at T6 and overaged conditions. The results show that the number of cycles required for initiation of fatigue cracks are not influenced with the notch severity and the aging condition of the matrix. The overaging heat treatment resulted in slower fatigue crack growth rates. The failure of the Sic particles during the fatigue process is given as the reason for the both observed initiation and crack growth characteristics. It is also shown that the growth rate of cracks emanating from blunt notches can be accurately described by an equivalent stress intensity factor range ΔKeq. This could provide an adequate engineering method for design against fatigue failure from various stress concentrations for this composite system.

    Notes: Abstract— Analytical procedures based on low cycle fatigue theory are used to estimate the fatigue crack initiation life (Ni) for a cruciform welded joint in mild steel under constant amplitude tensile cyclic loading; the fatigue crack initiating at the weld toe. Effects due to welding such as residual stresses, geometrical variability and changes in material properties are handled. It is shown that for high mean stresses the discrepancies observed between the Ni estimates provided by commonly used analytical procedures exceed an order of magnitude. For the base metal (BM) the discrepancies become negligible if cyclic relaxation of notch mean stress is taken into consideration. The differences betwen the Ni estimates for heat affected zone (HAZ) material (where fatigue cracks at the weld toe usually initiate) and for BM are quantified. The applicability of HAZ material properties, estimated from hardness, to Ni prediction is evaluated.

A Markovian modeling of the crack is introduced through the fatigue crack growth law, and the associated Fokker-Planck equation is written while special care is devoted to specifying its boundary conditions. This equation is solved by the method of separation of variables and the sought distribution function is obtained in the form of a convergent infinite series.     Notes: Fatigue crack growth behaviour in a 15 wt% SiC particulate reinforced 6061 aluminium alloy has been examined using pre-cracked specimens. Crack initiation and early growth of fatigue cracks in smooth specimens has also been investigated using the technique of periodic replication. The composite contained a bimodal distribution of SiC particle sizes, and detailed attention was paid to interactions between the SiC particles and the growing fatigue-crack tip. At low stress intensity levels, the proportion of coarse SiC particles on the fatigue surfaces was much smaller than that on the metallographic sections, indicating that the fatigue crack tends to run through the matrix avoiding SiC particles. As the stress intensity level increases, the SiC particles ahead of the growing fatigue crack tip are fractured and the fatigue crack then links the fractured particles. The contribution of this monotonic fracture mode resulted in a higher growth rate for the composite than for the unreinforced alloy. An increase in the proportion of cracked, coarse SiC particles on the fatigue surface was observed for specimens tested at a higher stress ratio.

    Notes: Starting from the well-accepted but not proved hypothesis that biological load carrying structures are highly optimized by growth, some examples are given and their degrees of optimization are demonstrated. Especially branch joints, deer antlers, branch holes in trees and modelling growth of trees loaded by contact stresses are discussed. On the basis of the knowledge that biological structures always try to avoid localized stress peaks (notch stresses), and that they try to grow into a locally homogeneous surface stress state, a new method of CAO (computer aided shape-optimization) is proposed which relies on biological growth. Its efficiency and success are demonstrated for two- and three-dimensional structures with very homogenous stress states after optimization.

    Notes: Abstract— The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of electron beam welding parameters on fatigue crack growth rate in AISI 4130 steel. The welding method was carried out by using nonoscillation and oscillation electron beam patterns. In nonoscillation welding, the welding speed, was varied; in oscillation welding just the oscillation pattern and the oscillation frequency were varied. After welding, X-ray inspection, metallography, fatigue crack growth tests and scanning electron microscopy were employed to characterize these specimens. From the results, the weld centerline solidification structure transforms from a longitudinal raft structure to an interlocked structure with increasing welding speed, and the fatigue crack growth rate increases slightly. The transverse oscillation pattern provides a lower fatigue crack growth rate than the longitudinal oscillation pattern. The higher oscillation frequency gives a lower fatigue crack growth resistence for the longitudinal oscillation pattern, but the opposite is the case for the transverse oscillation pattern.

    Notes: Abstract— The influence of specimen geometry on crack growth and crack closure response was determined for BS4360 50B steel and 6082-T6 aluminium alloy. Specimens were sufficiently thick for plane strain conditions to prevail along most of the crack front. After an initial crack growth transient from the sharpened notch, and steady state conditions are attained, the growth rate and closure responses are independent of specimen geometry. At growth rates above the near-threshold regime the cyclic crack openings exceed the fracture surface roughness for the steel, but are much less than the surface roughness for the aluminium alloy. This suggests that roughness-induced crack closure plays a dominant role for the aluminium alloy but not for the steel. Finally, the effect of mean stress upon closure response is presented for the steel.

    Notes: Abstract— The growth behaviour of small fatigue cracks has been investigated on aluminum alloy 7075-T6 at stress ratios R of 0, −1 and −2. The effects of stress ratio are discussed with special interest in the stage I region of small crack growth. Cracks which initiated at R=−1 and −2, grew by a stage I mechanism up to a certain depth followed by stage II crack growth. The stage I to stage II transition occurred under a constant maximum stress intensity factor which was approximately consistent with the threshold effective stress intensity range, λKeff,th, for large cracks. At R= 0, on the other hand, stage I crack growth was not observed because of crack initiation at inclusions. Small cracks grew more rapidly than large cracks subjected to the same nominal stress intensity ranges at all the stress ratios, and they grew below the threshold stress intensity range, λKth, for large cracks. Stage I cracks, in particular, showed much higher growth rates than large cracks and grew even below λKeff,th. It is suggested that stage II crack growth rates should be characterized in terms of an effective stress intensity range, while a micromechanics approach will be necessary to evaluate stage I crack growth rates.

    Notes: Local stress peaks are the main reason for fatigue failure of structures. It is therefore of interest to understand the stress distribution in a component under service conditions. A systematic method is proposed to show how engineering components may be designed by simulation of biological growth. The method is based on “misuse” of the swelling option in the FE-code Abaqus in order to simulate “growth” of structures into a shape more appropriate for the actual loading case considered. The method promises to be an extremely powerful “intelligent” CAD approach.

    Notes: Fatigue tests were carried out on type A5083P-O Al–Mg aluminium alloy butt welded specimens by a test method which simulates the behaviour of large size welded structures having high tensile residual stresses by means of ordinary narrow specimens, containing low level residual stresses. In the tests, specimens were cycled down from a constant maximum stress of the yield strength of the material. The S–N data obtained in these tests were compared with corrected lines from S–N data for narrow specimens tested at R= 0 considering the presence of high tensile residual stresses and the proposed design curve in the draft British Standard BS 8118. It was found that the discrepancy between corrected lines and the data plots was not small and that the proposed design curve was over conservative in the high cycle region.

    Notes: Abstract— Under non-steady creep conditions, the stress and strain rate fields near the tip of a stationary crack can be described by the singular fields of Hutchinson, Rice and Rosengren for power-law creeping materials. Estimation formulae are presented for describing the amplitude of these fields under load and displacement controlled boundary conditions. For constant loading, the formulae reduce to the result of Riedel and Rice for short times after load application and to the steady state line integral C* for long times. At intermediate times, the estimate is validated by detailed finite-element computation. For displacement-controlled loading, the amplitude of the near-tip fields is shown to fall rapidly, consistent with finite-element analysis. The implications of the results for data collection and defect assessments are discussed in a companion paper.

    Notes: The gel electrode technique has been modified for the detection of fatigue cracks in magnesium alloys. Prior to fatigue loading, the surface is coated with a thin (70nm) insulating anodic film of magnesium fluoride. This film is ruptured wherever a fatigue crack subsequently forms in the magnesium alloy so that current from the gel electrode flows preferentially to the crack. This current forms an image of the crack on the gel electrode probe with a resolution of 0.05 mm. The image is repeatable, permitting the early stages of growth of small cracks to be monitored.

    Notes: Available expressions for load-line compliance and crack-mouth opening compliance expressions for standard three-point bend specimens (span over width ratio =4) are assessed. It is concluded that none of the available expressions are able to reproduce the source data (boundary collocation results and theoretical limits for relative crack depths equal to 0 and 1) for the entire range of relative crack depth. New expressions for example are proposed and the accuracy of each is indicated. A by-product of the new expression for load-line compliance is a new, fully compatible stress intensity expression that is, consistent with the load line compliance expression as known from theoretical considerations. Also inverse expressions are presented which predicting the crack length from compliance. To improve the accuracy of such inverse expressions, a correction that results in a considerable error reduction is presented.

    Notes: A fracture-mechanics based model is proposed for fatigue crack growth in fiber-reinforced metal-matrix composites (MMCs). The model incorporates most of the fracture micromechanisms commonly observed in fiber-reinforced MMCs, including (1) formation of microcracks ahead of the crack tip by either fiber fracture or interface decohesion, (2) interactions of the main crack tip with fibers and microcracks, (3) linkage of the main crack with microcracks, and (4) crack deflection by fibers. Statistical variations of fiber or interface strength are also considered. The essential feature of the model is to compute the changes in the local stress intensity due to various fracture mechanisms; the local stress intensity is then utilized to predict crack growth rate in MMCs via an elastic modulus normalization procedure. Application of the model to predicting crack growth in an alumina fiber Mg-alloy composite is presented.

    Notes: Behaviour of fatigue crack growth and closure through a compressive residual stress field is investigated by performing fatigue crack growth tests on welded SEN specimens of a structural steel (JIS SM50A). Depending on the type of the initial residual stress in the region of crack growth, the growth and closure of the crack show different behaviour. In particular, in the transition region from a compressive residual stress field to a tensile residual stress field, the fatigue crack growth rates cannot be described by the effective stress intensity factor range ΔKeff, based on the measured crack opening stress intensity factor Kop. Also it is found that the R'-method using the data of da/dN vs ΔK for residual stress-free specimens, with the effective stress ratio R'[=(Kmax+Kr)/(Kmin+Kr)], gives non-conservative predictions of the growth rates in the transition region. Observations of crack closure behaviour in this study indicates that partial opening of the crack occurs and this plays an important role in crack growth through a compressive residual stress field. Based on the concept of a partial opening point (defined and measured in this work), fatigue crack growth behaviour can be better explained.

    Notes: Abstract— Solid solution hardening and strain hardening are the dominating strengthening mechanisms to achieve a high yield stress and ultimate tensile strength in Cr-Mn-N steels for drill collars. The fatigue limit can be improved more effectively by solid solution hardening than by strain hardening, but the attainable hardness due to soluble elements is restricted by other metallurgical demands. Strain hardening significantly increases the strength and the fatigue limit is improved too, but to a lesser extent. The reason for this behaviour is the introduction of internal stresses of the I, II and III kind by forging the drill collars. This results in macroscopic stresses which are varying over the cross section and in stresses of a microscopical scale which lead to an early loss of linearity in the elastic line of the stress strain curve and to the well known Bauschinger effect. Cyclic softening and hardening is accompanied by a rearrangement of the dislocation structure as revealed by transmission electron microscopy. The results indicate that a multiaxial and homogeneous cold working to produce a stable dislocation structure and to avoid large directional internal stresses is extremely important to achieve high fatigue strengths. Crack growth and crack closure measurements were performed for determination of the effective cyclic threshold stress intensity range for evaluation of the influence of the grain size on the fatigue limit.

    Notes: Abstract— The problem of the nucleation and growth of short fatigue cracks is addressed from an energetic point of view. It is explained that vanishingly small cracks can only nucleate and grow at the expense of the release of some locally stored energy during the fatigue deformation. This is necessary because an external loading system alone cannot provide a positive driving force for the growth of a crack whose length is below a critical value. The concept of the local driving force is used to explain the nucleation and growth of short fatigue cracks both at plain surfaces and at notches. With this approach a meaningful definition can be given of a “short fatigue crack” and a sound physical interpretation of the Kitagawa-Takahashi plots is provided. The conditions for the existence of non-propagating cracks are clearly established and the relationship between the stress concentration factor at the root of notches and the fatigue limit is explained. The paper sets up a physical framework for the sound understanding and treatment of short fatigue cracks and the microstructural parameters which control their growth.

    Notes: Abstract— This paper develops the compliance approach to the problem of load sharing between a cracked plate and a cover plate used to bridge the crack. The theory is validated by using calculated stress intensity factors for the covered and uncovered cases to reduce experimentally observed growth rates to a common base. Calculations are then made on the effect of cover plate width on fatigue crack retardation in order to demonstrate the predictive capability of the technique.
