Notizen: We use Hodge-Helmholtz decompositions of weighted Sobolev spaces to solve time-harmonic exterior-boundary value problems for perturbations of the (aδd+bdδ)-system (δ: the co-differential, a, b〉0). We prove, that a Fredholm alternative holds true, the eigensolutions decay polynomially at infinity, and that the positive eigenvalues do not accumulate. © 1997 B. G. Notizen: The Neumann problem for the Laplace equation in an exterior connected plane region bounded by closed and open curves is studied. The existence of classical solution is proved by potential theory. The problem is reduced to the Fredholm equation of the second kind, which is uniquely solvable. © 1997 by B. G. Notizen: We give a complete classification for breakdown in finite time or global existence of continuously differentiable solutions to hyperbolic systems of two first-order partial differential equations posed on a real bounded interval, with boundary damping and initial data of small magnitude. Structural bounds for the derivatives of the initial data which govern the behavior of the solution are brought to light. We isolate two classes of boundary damping: the strong damping forbids the solution to blow up after a time that we exhibit while the weak damping permits a late breakdown. The results are applied to nonlinear elasticity. © 1997 by B. G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Notizen: Solutions of linear elliptic partial differential equations in unbounded domains can be represented by boundary potentials if they satisfy certain conditions at infinity. These radiation conditions depend on the fundamental solution chosen for the integral representation. We prove some basic results about radiation conditions in a rather general framework.Fundamental solutions G are considered that are defined only on the complement of a compact set. It turns out, however, and we present examples for this, that the more interesting results only hold if G is defined on all of ∝n or if it is a Green function for an exterior boundary value problem. © 1997 by B.G. Notizen: In the present paper, we deal with the long time behaviour of solutions for the generalized Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation. By a priori estimates methods, we show this equation possesses a global attractor in Hk for every integer k≥2, which has finite Hausdorff and fractal dimensions. We also construct approximate inertial manifolds such that every solution enters their thin neighbourhood in a finite time. © 1997 by B.G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: An explicit factorization of the Fourier symbol matrix functions generated by Sommerfeld diffraction problems with oblique derivatives is obtained. For this purpose a new prefactorization procedure is developed which makes use of factorization through weighted L2 spaces. These results yield a representation of a generalized inverse of the corresponding matrix Wiener-Hopf operator and the asymptotic behaviour of the solution at the edge of the screen. © 1997 by B. G. Notizen: A generalized Hele-Shaw flow is derived and analysed in injection and compression moulding which contains non-isothermal and non-Newtonian rheological behaviour of the molten polymers as well as non-symmetric effects. The corresponding fixed domain formulations for the flow are investigated from a mathematical point of view. Different approaches for the determination of the temperature and some viscosity models are discussed. Together with an outline of the proposed solution algorithm special finite element techniques are described for the numerical treatment of this complex non-linear moving boundary problem. © 1997 by B. Notizen: The Ginzburg-Landau equation which describes nonlinear modulation of the amplitude of the basic pattern does not give a good approximation when the Landau constant (which describes the influence of the nonlinearity) is small. In this paper a derivation of the so-called degenerate (or generalized) Ginzburg-Landau (dGL)-equation is given. It turns out that one can understand the dGL-equation as an example of a normal form of a co-dimension two bifurcation for parabolic PDEs. The main body of the paper is devoted to the proof of the validity of the dGL as an equation whose solution approximate the solution of the original problem. © 1997 by B. G. With the help of the theory of boundary integral (pseudo-differential) equations uniqueness and existence theorems are proved in the Bessel-potential and Besov spaces and Cα-smoothness (with α〈1/2) of solution is established in the neighbourhood of the boundary of the open surface. © 1997 B. Notizen: We regard the Schrödinger-Poisson system arising from the modelling of an electron gas with reduced dimension in a bounded up to three-dimensional domain and establish the method of steepest descent. The electrostatic potentials of the iteration scheme will converge uniformly on the spatial domain. To get this result we investigate the Schrödinger operator, the Fermi level and the quantum mechanical electron density operator for square integrable electrostatic potentials. On bounded sets of potentials the Fermi level is continuous and bounded, and the electron density operator is monotone and Lipschitz continuous. As a tool we develop a Riesz-Dunford functional calculus for semibounded self-adjoint operators using paths of integration which enclose a real half-axis. © 1997 B. G. Notizen: We investigate an initial-value problem modelling fragmentation processes where particles split into two or more pieces at a rate, γ, that not only depends on the sizes of the particles involved but also on time. The existence of non-negative, mass-conserving solutions is established by considering a truncated version of an associated non-autonomous abstract Cauchy problem. The latter has solutions of the form u(t)=Un(t,t0)f, t≥t0, where f is the known data at some fixed time t0≥0 and {Un(t,s)}t0≤s≤t≤T is a uniformly continuous evolution system. A limit evolution system {U(t,s)}t0≤s≤t≤T is shown to exist. Depending on the form of the known data f at time t0, the scalar-valued function u, obtained from the limit evolution system via u(x, t)=[U(t, t0)f](x) for a.e. x〉0, t≥t0, is a solution of either the original initial-value problem or an integral version of this problem. © 1997 B. Notizen: In this note we investigate spatial bounds for the heat conduction equation with three relaxation times. We use energy methods similar to those considered in the study of the backward parabolic heat equation. Finally, we show that for any positive choice of the coefficients we may take initial data for which the solution is unstable when we suppose that the body is bounded. © 1997 B. G. Notizen: Continuous sedimentation of solid particles in a liquid takes place in a clarifier-thickener unit, which has one feed inlet and two outlets. The process is vital in a waste water treatment plant, where the particles consist of several biological components. The concentrations of these are modelled by a one-dimensional system of conservation laws with source term. It is shown how a unique solution can be obtained, and how analytical solutions are used to form a conservative numerical algorithm. © 1997 B. G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Notizen: This paper is concerned with the existence and uniqueness of the steady-state solution of hydrodynamic model for semiconductor devices. Boundary conditions are prescribed by vorticity on inflow boundary as well as by electron density, temperature, and normal component of electron velocity on whole boundary. If the ambient temperature is large, and if both vorticity on inflow boundary and the variation of density on boundary are small, a unique subsonic solution exists. © 1997 by B.G. Notizen: The theory of high-frequency waves has been used to calculate first and second-order asymptotic solutions for the propagation of non-linear waves in a cylindrical symmetric flow of an electron plasma. The behaviour of acceleration waves and weak shock waves has been analysed through these solutions and Whitham's rule for a weak shock wave on any wavelet has been confirmed through the first-order solution. The appearance of a weak shock wave on any wavelet has been determined and its strength, the location, and the speed of propagation have been found from the asymptotic solution presented in this paper. © 1997 by B. Notizen: (1) In an animal where the corpus allatum complex is inhibited by glucose feeding, the ovariole develops to a certain size without yolk deposition in the oocytes. Histologically this can be registered as: (a) Lipid spheres are found in the young oocytes in the vicinity of the Balbiani body (as in young normal oocytes). However, this lipid decreases in amount and “new” lipid (from the fat body via haemolymph) is not deposited in the later oocytes. (b) No carbohydrate/protein yolk is formed. (c) Glycogen is not synthesized in the oocytes. (d) The follicle cells aggregate glycogen instead of lipid. (e) No qualitative differences have been observed regarding the contributions from the tropharium (the so-called Type 1 vacuole, ribosomes, mitochondria, annulated lamellae: Schreiner, '77).(2) Implantation of a corpus allatum complex results in deposition of lipid, carbohydrate/protein and glycogen yolk. However, the restoration period differs histologically from the normal development as: (a) Glycogen appears in the oocyte earlier than normal, i.e., at Stage 4, while normally at Stage 6′. (b) Glycogen appears in the nutritive tube adjacent to the interfollicular plug cells. (c) Both the inner and outer layer of the ovariole sheath contain glycogen, the outer layer contains lipid spheres as well.

Notizen: The odontophore and connective tissue-filled portion of the radular sac (called the “collostyle”) of the slug, Limax maximus, were examined by light and electron microscopy. While both of these structures grossly resemble vertebrate cartilage, neither is composed of a type of tissue with the microscopic appearance and histochemical properties of cartilage. The roughly U-shaped odontophore possesses a thin capsule composed of connective tissue. The parenchyma of the odontophore consists of modified muscle cells which are organized into irregular groups by incomplete trabeculae composed of conventional muscle cells. The odontophoral cells are variable in size; they contain glycogen-filled “cores” as well as bundles of peripherally located filaments resembling myofilaments; and they are innervated like muscle cells. The nuclei of the cells are located eccentrically in the glycogen-filled portions of the cells and typically contain prominent nucleoli. The nuclei are surrounded by multiple small Golgi complexes and pleomorphic dense bodies resembling lysosomes. The extracellular matrix of the odontophore is very sparse and contains glycogen and fibrillar material but no histochemically demonstrable acidic mucosubstances. The collostyle consists of a gelatinous type of tissue somewhat like vertebrate mucoid connective tissue. The abundant extracellular matrix contains cross banded filaments, a flocculent material disposed in wavy indefinite strands, and small electron-dense particles. The matrix contains histochemically demonstrable neutral and weakly acidic mucosubstances. The cell population of the collostyle includes solitary muscle cells and fibrocytes containing large quantities of glycogen.

Notizen: This ultrastructural study on the localization of Ca+2 in developing skeletal muscle indicates that the formation of calcium-accumulating components begins during embryonic development. Both oxalate and pyroantimonate techniques are used to localize Ca+2 in distinct cellular components of chick pectoral and sartorius muscles. Two major sites for Ca+2 accumulation are present in ultrathin sections of embryonic and post-embryonic muscles: the terminal cisternae of the sarcoplasmic reticulum and specific lines in the I-bands. Calcium oxalate-accumulating vesicles are present in the smallest recognizable myotubes at the twelfth day of incubation, but calcium-accumulating components are not seen at myofibrillar I-band sites until the fourteenth to seventeenth days of incubation. The fact that myofibrils first form and later in development accumulate a Ca+2-binding component suggests that this Ca+2-binding component is not necessary for the formation of myofibrils, but is added to myofibrils before hatching to serve a probable regulatory role in contraction.

Oral apparatus membranellar basal bodies were characterized with respect to structural differentiations at the distal and proximal ends. The distal region of membranellar basal bodies contains the basal plate, accessory microtubules and filaments. The proximal end contains a dense material from which emanate accessory microtubules and filaments. There are at least two possibly three different arrangements of accessory structures at the proximal end of membranellar basal bodies. All membranellar basal bodies appear to have a dense material at the proximal end from which filaments emanate. Some of these basal bodies have accessory microtubules and filaments emanating from this dense material. A possible third arrangement is represented by basal bodies which have lateral projections, from the proximal end, of accessory microtubules and filaments which constitute cross or peripheral connectives. There are at least three examples of direct associations between oral apparatus microtubules and filaments: (1) filaments which form links between basal body triplet microtubules, (2) filaments which link the material of the basal plate to internal basal body microtubules, (3) filaments which link together microtubule bundles from membranellar connectives. KCI extraction of the isolated oral apparatus resulted in the selective solubilization of oral apparatus basal bodies, remnants of ciliary axonemes and fused basal plates. Based on their response to KCl extraction two distinct sets of morphologically similar microtubules can be identified: (a) microtubules which constitute the internal structure of basal bodies and ciliary axonemes, (b) microtubules which constitute the fiber connectives between basal bodies.

Notizen: Ultrastructural analysis of initial development of actinotrichia, the skeleton anlage of the pelvic fin buds, was performed on the rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri. It shows that the first actinotrichial rudiments appear in the subepidermal space of the pseudoapical cap. No mesenchymal cell bodies or their filopods are present. Hyaloplasmic protrusions of the basal epidermal cells are seen in the subepidermal space, limited by a dermoepidermal boundary reduced to a discontinuous thin adepidermal lamina without a collagenous layer. These morphological data suggest that the epidermal pseudoapical cap probably initiates the development of actinotrichia. Later, mesenchymal cells invade the subepidermal space and are probably involved in the further growth of actinotrichia.

Notizen: Synaptic organization of the nucleus rotundus was studied with the electron microscope in three teleost species belonging to the same order. In spite of the different histological organization (non-laminated, incompletely laminated, and laminated), the same kinds of axon terminals (S and F) are observed in all species. A fibrous layer which is clearly formed only in the laminated nucleus is composed of F1 terminals and dendrites from a layer of small cells. The same kind of synapses formed between F1 terminals and dendrites of small cells are also found among glomeruli in the non-laminated and incompletely laminated nuclei. The main constituents of glomeruli are S and F2 terminals and dendrites of large cells in the non-laminated and incompletely laminated nuclei, and are S terminals and star-like structures which correspond to the tips of the dendrites of large cells in the laminated nucleus. The star-like structure contains numerous mitochondria and clusters of small polymorphic vesicles. Some of the vesicles aggregate at thickened cell membranes of the structure as in presynaptic dendrites.

Notizen: The intrinsic organization of medial cortex in snakes, primarily of the genera Natrix and Boa, was studied using Golgi and electron microscopic techniques. The area has three distinct layers, each containing a characteristic population of neurons. Stellate cells comprise a relatively small population of neurons with their somata and dendrites restricted to layer 1, the most superficial layer. Their axons course horizontally in layer 1. Candelabra cells form the largest population of neurons in medial cortex. Their somata lie densely packed in layer 2 and are joined by specialized junctions. Ascending dendrites extend from the somata into layer 1. They consist of spine-free proximal segments and spine bearing distal segments. Descending dendrites extend from the somata into the upper half of layer 3. The proximal segments bear few spines but branch into several tapered, distal segments which have a moderate covering of spines. One or two axons originate from the descending dendrites and descend through layer 3. The axons bear collaterals in the deep half of layer 3 and eventually bifurcate in the alveus. The medial branches run into the septum; the lateral branches course through other cortical areas. The axons bear frequent varicosities within medial cortex. Periventricular cells lie in the deep half of layer 3, either singly or in clusters. Their ascending dendrites extend radially into layer 1 where they branch into distal segments which resemble those of the candelabra cells. Their descending dendrites arborize horizontally in the alveus and bear a moderate covering of spines. Ependymal cells line the ventricular surface and send radial processes through the area's depth bearing lamellate processes.

Notizen: The sex-linked mutation fs(1)42 was induced by ethyl methane sulfonate. It has no effect on either the external morphology or longevity of adult hemizygotes or homozygotes. Heterozygotes and hemizygotes are fertile, but homozygotes are sterile. Egg chamber development proceeds through stage 8, and thereafter chambers degenerate. Dying follicle cells are seen in chambers at all positions in the ovarioles. Profollicle cells also die within germaria, and clusters of sister cystocytes take longer than normal to receive their coverings of follicle cells. Egg chambers in the vitellarium contain only about 60% the normal number of follicle cells, these generally have greater lateral dimensions, and their nuclei and nucleoli are also larger than normal. The follicular envelope of mutant chambers often contains gaps through which cystocytes send cytoplasmic projections. Abnormalities seen in development of the fs(1)42 oocyte are likely to be due to its envelope of defective follicle cells.

Notizen: Reproductive organs of four botryllid ascidians, Botryllus primigenus, Botryllus schlosseri, Botrylloides violaceus and Botrylloides leachi, were studied histologically. In every species, the egg follicle consisting of an egg and its inner and outer follicles, is attached to the follicle stalk, the vesicle being composed of a flat epithelium, which in its turn is connected to the atrial epithelium or to the brood pouch specialized from it. In B. schlosseri, the egg is ovulated into the atrial cavity and remains there held by the brood cup, of which the inner epithelium is derived from the follicle stalk and the outer one from the atrial epithelium. In B. primigenus, the brood pouch develops as a diverticulum of the atrial cavity, around the entrance of which a fold differentiates from the atrial epithelium and closes the pouch during embryogenesis. In both species of Botrylloides, the brood pouch is formed by the outgrowth of the thickened atrial epithelium into the blood space, the entrance of which is closed during embryogenesis. The discarded outer follicle completely disintegrates soon after ovulation in B. schlosseri, but part of it remains throughout embryogenesis in the blood space in B. primigenus or projecting into the interior of the brood pouch in Botrylloides. In B. primigenus, the testis, when it accompanies the egg follicle, is placed at the bottom of the brood pouch and the sperm is shed through the pouch prior to ovulation. In B. schlosseri and the Botrylloides species, the testis is located independently from the egg follicle and the sperm matures after ovulation.

Notizen: An unusual organelle in the oocytes of the marine mud snail Ilyanassa obsoleta is described and called a polymerosome, because of its several components. Polymerosomes appear at the beginning of vitellogenesis and persist, in part, through postvitellogenesis. The persistent part is similar to an organelle that has been described by other workers in the vegetal region and the polar lobe of the Ilyanassa egg.

Notizen: An analysis of mechanical and architectural aspects of three hamstring muscles in the cat, semitendinosus (ST), semimembranosus anterior (SMa), and semimembranosus posterior (SMp), is presented based on whole muscle tetanic tension profiles. Length-active tension curves for each muscle were obtained by electrical stimulation of the whole muscle with a train of stimuli at 100 pulses per second (pps) for 600 milliseconds.Information from motion picture analysis (Goslow et al., '73) and electromyographic (EMG) activity (Engberg and Lundberg, '69) as seen during the step cycle is combined with analysis of joint torques to present a picture of the differential functions of the three muscles. The length-active tension characteristics of ST and SMa are such that they develop high amounts of tension throughout their physiological excursions. Maximal tension is produced over a much more limited range by SMp. A division of labor for the three muscles is proposed: the one-joint SMa is shown to be a primary hip extensor whose action facilitates smooth oscillation of the leg. Torque and electrical activity during the step cycle indicate the two-joint ST is a primary knee flexor. The more limited range of maximum torque and variable EMG pattern of the other two-joint muscle, SMp, relate to the fact that it has primary activity during high speed gaits when it may act to initiate spine flexion and assist in hip extension.Excursion and activity data have led to the conclusion that biarticular muscles (ST and SMp) may benefit from the combined action of two joints to maintain near maximal tension and torque during active phases of the step cycle. Thus, biarticular muscles may have evolved as much for the mechanical and physiological benefits they derive as for two-joint action itself.

Notizen: Oogenesis has been investigated utilizing both light and electron microscopical techniques in the squid, Loligo pealei. This complex process has been divided into five stages according to the structure of the follicle. Because of the highly coordinated differentiation of the follicle cells (and follicular syncytium) and the oocyte, their development is described in concert. Specific attention is given to the contribution of the follicular syncytium to vitellogenesis and the formation of the extracellular egg envelope or chorion. Our observations indicate heterosynthetic yolk production and the synthesis of the secondary envelope by the follicular syncytium.

Notizen: A recently presented model of tongue projection dynamics is used to generate a series of predictions concerning morphologies to be expected under selection for increased distance of projection, increased speed of projection, and increased directional versatility. A general understanding of biomechanical events and the model are used as points of departure for making specific predictions concerning details of structure in skeletal, muscular and connective tissue components of the tongue and associated structures. Comparative methods are used to examine these predictions in the genera of plethodontid salamanders. These salamanders are known to project their tongues to different degrees, and this knowledge is used to test the hypotheses concerning morphological specialization. Three distinct groups of plethodontid salamanders have evolved specializations for long distance projection, and these genera differ from one another in important ways in respect to specific character complexes. For example, the tropical genera and Hydromantes use CBII as the major force transmission element in the skeleton, while Eurycea and its allies use CBI in this role. Hydromantes differs from both in having a uniquely proportioned and structured hyobranchial skeleton and associated musculature. Less extreme specializations for tongue projection are found in different combinations in three other groups. Finally, two distinct groups of generalized species having only limited tongue projection capabilities are recognized, each having a unique complex of inter-related features. Each of these eight groups is recognized and characterized as a functional mode, and hypotheses concerning the biomechanical meaning of the character complexes of each are formulated.

Notizen: The mechanical properties of the whole muscle and fast-twitch muscle units of the cat hindlimb pretibial flexors have been explored and related to normal locomotion. Tibialis anterior (TA) is parallel-fibered and functionally crosses a single joint, the ankle, whereas extensor digitorum longus (EDL) is pinnate and spans the ankle, knee, metatarsophalangeal and interphalangeal joints. The active tetanic tension of TA remains near its peak value over a range of muscle lengths associated with normal ankle movement. In contrast, the length-tension curve of EDL is sharply peaked. However, normal corollary action of the knee, ankle and metatarsophalangeal joints during stepping minimizes EDL's excursion and maintains it at or near a length optimal for peak tension development. EDL is capable of producing synchronous but sterotyped digit and ankle movements while TA provides for independent ankle flexion at all relevant joint angles. The mechanical properties of 84 TA and 98 EDL fast-twitch muscle units were studied by measuring twitch contraction time (≤45 msec), peak tetanic tension, response to repetitive stimulation, and contractile fatigue resistance during electrical stimulation of single alpha axons, functionally isolated from ventral root filaments. These mechanical properties were essentially similar for both muscles with the exception of mean peak tetanic tension which was 30% lower for TA units (14 gm-wt) than for EDL units (20 gm-wt). A high proportion of units in both muscles demonstrated fatigue resistance which is reflective of the repetitive, phasic demand upon these muscles during locomotion.

Notizen: A survey is made of some ultrastructural features of the developing cornea of Macaca mulatta. The observations are confined to the anterior central area, starting with the lens vesicle stage and progressing through midgestation, when the morphologic characteristics of the cornea are fully established. Subepithelial filaments and some partially aggregated collagen fibrils are present in the earliest embryo and are of a size and appearance similar to those in the future vitreous cavity. Epithelial secretory activity points to, but does not prove direct contribution to the deposition of the acellular matrix components beneath it. No trace of a structured, orthogonal collagenous stroma can be visualized. The primitive endothelium forms prior to the fibroblast invasion of the distended filamentous matrix. Bowman's layer has undoubted epithelial contributions. Its aggregated collagen fibrils have approximately the same diameter as those of the anterior stroma. Intraepithelial appearance of single nerve fibers and fascicles takes place during the first trimester of gestation, as soon as the two continuous epithelial layers are formed. Terminal areas approach closely to the basal cell's nucleus, without touching it. The plasmalemma of the invaginating nerve fiber is surrounded by that of the epithelial cell in a mesaxon-like manner, with occasional gap junctions uniting adjoining neural and epithelial cell membranes. The fetal neurites contain microtubules, some clear vesicles and dense vacuoles resembling those of mature monamine and non-monamine neurons. Mitochondria are small and compact, their presence indicating a high rate of metabolic activity in the immature terminal area.

Notizen: The structural features of sinus hair follicles in Sorex unguiculatus were studied by macroscopic dissection, serial section light microscopy and electron microscopy. The shrew has about 540 sinus hairs regularly arranged on the snout. The maxillary nerves innervating them are extremely thick, while the optic nerves are very thin. Thus the follicle must be one of the most important sense organs in this animal. In the follicle the ring sinus is well-developed and the trabeculae of the cavernous sinus are reduced in number and thickness. The ring bulge is not a unified structure but a pair of bodies which consist of head, stalk and attachment plaque. It is characterized by the presence of numberous thick collagen fibrils (400 nm) and appears to be mechanically rigid. Lanceolate nerve terminals, free endings, Merkel cells with nerve terminals and unmyelinated fibers are observed, but encapsulated endings are lacking in and around the follicles. Straight lanceolate terminals on the posterior side of the follicle are thick and three-sided in cross section, while those on the anterior side are thin and two-sided. Free endings are located on the anterior side of the follicle. These and other findings are discussed on the basis of the assumption that the Sorex sinus hair follicle is more specialized as a vibrating system than in other mammals.

Notizen: Neurosecretory cells are arranged in 16 NSC centers in the different regions of the brain of O. tholozani. The component cells belong to 13 different types, of which five types are paraldehyde fuchsin positive and the remaining types are negative. Three of these cell types are here described for the first time. Some of these NSC show an affinity to certain localities inside the brain. Cells comprising a neurohaemal organ were found near the exit of the esophagus.

Notizen: Yolk platelets in differentiating embryonic amphibian cells degrade by a membranous “unraveling” or “delamination” process. Acid phosphatase activity was demonstrated at the peripheries of those platelets which were in the process of degrading and thus this lytic enzyme appears to be involved in the breakdown process. We believe that this relationship provides a means by which early cells obtain the nutrients necessary for early differentiation.

Notizen: The coelomocytes of Lumbricus terrestris have been classified and described, based on Wright's stained preparations and on living cells. The five major categories consist of basophils, acidophils, neutrophils, granulocytes and chloragogen cells. Both the acidophil and chloragogen cell groups contain two subgroups. Granulocytes also exhibit heterogeneity with respect to staining properties of granules. Some possess acidophilic granules, some basophilic granules, and others contain both types. Granules of acidophils have been observed to be occasionally excreted from the cells. All cell types, with the exception of chloragogen cells, produce pseudopodia and are capable of phagocytosis, a vital component of the earthworm's immune response.

Notizen: Newly metamorphosed Kenyan reed frogs, Hyperolius viridiflavus ferniquei, are able to regenerate amputated digits. The terminal digital pad is also completely reformed. Differentiation of the regenerating digital pad was studied by scanning electron microscopy. External differentiation of the digital pad began late in the second postamputational week with the appearance of small patches of specialized epidermal cells on the ventral surface of the regenerating digit. The differentiation of the pad spread out radially until late in the fourth week, when its overall shape approximated that of the normal digital pad. The appearance of patches of digital pad epidermis on the ends of spike regenerates arising from the forearm was also confirmed.

Notizen: The objectives of this research were to investigate the morphology of the thoracic skeleton and muscles of the mosquito, Culiseta inornata (Williston). The results are presented in 25 text figures and descriptions of each skeletal part and muscle. Undescribed exoskeletal structures are the postmediotergite, intersegmental cleft on the caudal margin of the metapleuron, and the parascutellar process. This process is considered a homologue of the fourth axillary. The acrotergite 2 and subalifer were identified. The prescutum has been called the paratergite by previous authors. The morphological basis for self amputation of legs is described. Undescribed parts of the endoskeleton are: lateral arm of sternal apophysis 1 and its socket on the mesal surface of coxa 1, furcopleural apodeme on sternal apophysis 1, precoxal and postcoxal apodemes arising from the ventral pleural arm, upper and lower laterotergite apodemes on the postnotum, and the pleural and intersegmental apodemes for attachment of halter muscles. Seventy-two muscles are illustrated with their attachments and the origin, insertion, and action of each is described. Ten of the muscles are newly described for the mosquito. There are no muscles inserted on the subalare, second axillary, or third axillary.

Notizen: The results of reversing the polarity of the middle gastric region in Hydra viridis with multiple-gastric region grafts (3grp animals) are contrasted to previously reported results on comparably elongated animals (3g animals) whose middle gastric regions retain their original polarity. The middle gastric regions of 3grp animals are also bisected (the animals are hemisected) at various times after grafting. Compound heads and compound feet form at the proximal and distal graft borders, respectively, in nearly all 3grp animals. The regeneration of structures at points is a built-in property, not influenced by reversing the polarity of pieces during grafting. Regeneration is accelerated when comparable wound surfaces are brought together by grafting with reversed polarity. Graft rejection is influenced by the total length of an animal and distances from terminal structures, but not the polarity of pieces. Budding is also influenced by total length and distance, but is dependent on polarity and diminished by head regeneration. When fresh wound surfaces are made on the middle piece of 3grp animals, an initial refractory period, during which head and foot (but not budding region) regeneration is inhibited in about half the animals, is followed by an indefinite period in which head and foot regeneration is permitted (and budding region regeneration prevented). Hemisection does not interfere with the regeneration of compound structures already in progress. These results are interpreted in terms of theories of competence, negative dominance, threshold (positional value), inhibition (positional signal), and induction (positive or constructive dominance, stimulation or enhancement).

Notizen: Neurosecretory A cells in the pars intercerebralis of O. fasciatus were identified at the ultrastructural level. Fine structural study of the A cells of female insects during the period of production of the first batch of eggs revealed that these cells undergo qualitative and quantitative changes during the first eight days of adult life. The A cells appear to be inactive in the newly emerged females. There is a significant depletion of neurosecretory granules (NSG) in the perikarya in the 2-day-old females followed by an increase and decrease in the 4- and 6-day-old females, respectively. The A cells in the 8-day-old females showed an accumulation of NSG. The mitochondrial population increases after adult emergence reaching a peak in the 4-day-old females, and then declines gradually in the subsequent age groups. The effect of sublethal dose of gamma radiation on the ultrastructure of the A cells was also investigated. Radiation damage is evident as early as four hours after irradiation with 10 kR. There is considerable swelling of the lysosomes and the membrane system in the A cells of irradiated insects. Synthetic activity of the A cells, based on the distribution of the endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi complex and mitochondria, as well as release of the NSG are apparently inhibited after irradiation. Radiation-induced damage becomes more conspicuous as post-irradiation interval increases. It is surmised that the damage to the A cells might have contributed at least in part, to the failure of yolk deposition in the irradiated insects.

Notizen: The junction between human primary dentine and regular and irregular secondary dentine was examined with a number of different light and electron microscopic techniques. In decalcified material, a narrow band along the innermost surface of the primary dentine stained intensely. The walls of the tubules within the band stained intensely, whereas the tubular walls within the bulk of the primary dentine were not stained. Generally, the walls of the tubules in both types of secondary dentine were also preferentially stained. Although not readily apparent in ground sections, observations of thin sections revealed a dramatic reduction in the number of tubules in regular secondary dentine. Generally, the radiodensity of the intertubular matrix was the same in primary and secondary dentine and the intensely stained band was not seen radiographically. The pulpal ends of the tubules in primary dentine were often occluded with a material having the same radiodensity as peritubular matrix. Both patent and occluded tubules were seen in irregular secondary dentine. Scanning electron microscopy of acid-etched specimens of secondary dentine revealed that some tubules had irregular walls of highly mineralized matrix which was less acid-soluble than the peritubular matrix of primary dentine.

Notizen: Simultaneous cine and electromyographic records of freely feeding, unanesthetized golden hamsters show that their motion and muscular activity during mastication differ from those of albino rats (Weijs, '75). Rats show only propalinal motion while hamsters show lateral translation as well. The masticatory muscles of hamsters and rats are generally similar, but their molar dentitions differ. The interlocking molar cusps of hamsters restrict propalinal protrusion and retrusion when the molars are in occlusion; however, hamsters readily unlock occlusion by a twisting movement in the horizontal plane. Rats may perform propalinal movements even with the teeth in occlusion. In mastication the hamstery's jaw moves laterally as well as vertically and anteroposteriorly. Chewing orbits typically reverse after one to three orbits. Reversal begins at the start of the upstroke and involves a lateral shift in the opposite direction with the mouth closed.Electromyograms show that symmetric and asymmetric activities of closing protrusive and closing retrusive muscles produce a unilateral force couple on both sides. (This couple accompanies a midline closing stroke.) When the mouth is closed, unilateral activity of closing retrusors and closing protrusors also induces lateral translation. A bilateral force couple pits the retrusors of one side against the protrusors on the opposite side. Simultaneous with lateral excursion to the opposite side of midline and the action of these closing muscles, the anterior digastric and lateral pterygoid muscles of one side fire asymmetrically. The mandible moves downward coincidently with bilateral activity of the digastrics and lateral pterygoids. As the jaw opens further, activity differences of the lateral pterygoids accompany a shift of the mandible toward midline. At the end of the downstroke, all masticatory muscles studied are silent. The jaw returns to midline when the adductors fire asymmetrically at the start of closing.Trituration appears to coincide with an initial simple protrusion, which is subsequently accompanied by lateral translation. Different food types are reduced by distint chewing patterns with the differences clearest when the teeth are near occlusion. During gnawing the lateral pterygoids and digastrics fire longer, and the closing muscles fire less strongly. Chewing patterns in golden hamsters appear more generalized than those of rats; the differences may be directly associated with the ability of hamsters to store food in their cheek pouches.

Notizen: The distribution of neutral red staining peripheral cell bodies along the nerve trunks of the thoracic median nervous system of the locust, Schistocerca gregaria, is described. Backfilling of the cells with cobalt chloride solution reveals that they are neurones with characteristic axonal processes that terminate in the neurohaemal areas of the median nerve. The neurones react with the dye acridine orange, indicating their neurosecretory nature. This is confirmed by their ultrastructural appearance at the electron microscope level. The distribution and staining properties of the cells are compared with those of peripheral neurones from other insects and the nature of their neurosecretory product is discussed.

Notizen: Numerous functional ergatoid replacement reproductives were found in one colony of Nasutitermes columbicus in Panama. Their morphology was mainly workerlike, although several imaginal characters such as the compound eyes and variable wing buds were more or less developed. The sex organs were fully mature and the fat body of the females, not of the males, was of the “royal” type. The development of the eyes was not accompanied by the differentiation of the optic lobes of the brain, nor was the presence of wing buds correlated with a development of the wing muscles.

Notizen: The surface morphology of the anterior-to-posterior sequence of segment formation in embryos of a viviparous neotropical onychophoran and aspects of post-placental development seen using scanning electron microscopy are described. When all the segments have formed and the walking legs have completed their elongation, the body surface becomes covered with an embryonic cuticle that does not exhibit the hydrofuge properties seen in the adult cuticle. As soon as the walking legs have reached their full length, barbed projections are formed at their distal extremities. These projections are extensions of single cells and are covered by the embryonic cuticle. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that the cells at the distal ends of the legs and their projections have many pinocytotic vesicles at their surfaces. The cytoplasm of these cells and their projections is rich in mitochondria, rough endoplasmic reticulum, glycogen, and granules of storage material. There are minor differences in the surface morphology of the projections found at the ends of the walking legs in embryos of Peripatus acacioi and those of Peripatus biolleyi. The projections and the embryonic cuticle persist thoughout postplacental development. The role of the projections in the uptake of material by the embryo from the uterus is discussed and the possible phylogenetic significance of these projections is suggested.

Notizen: The vertebral centra of Hiodon, Elops, and Albula are direct perichordal ossifications (autocentra) which enclose the arcocentra as in Amia. An inner ring of ovoid cells forms in late ontogeny from the intervertebral space inside the autocentrum. The chordacentrum is reduced or completely absent in centra of adult Elops, whereas it forms an important portion of the centra in adult Hiodon. The posterior portion of the compound ural centrum 3+4+5 is partially (Hiodon) or fully formed by the chordacentrum (Elops, Albula). The haemal arches and hypurals are fused medially by cartilage or bone trabecles of the arcocentrum with the centra, even though they appear autogenous in lateral view in Elops and Albula. The composition of the caudal skeleton of fossil teleosts and the ontogeny of that of Hiodon, Elops, and Albula corroborate a one-to-one relationship of ural centra with these dorsal and ventral elements. The first epural (epural 1) of Elops relates to ural centrum 1, whereas the first epural (epural 2) of Hiodon and Albula relates to ural centrum 2. In Albula, the first ural centrum is formed by ural centrum 2 only. With 4 uroneurals Hiodon has the highest number within recent teleosts. Juvenile specimens of Hiodon have eight, the highest number of hypurals within recent teleosts; this is the primitive condition by comparison with other teleosts and pholidophorids. Reduction of elements in the caudal skeleton is an advanced feature as seen within elopomorphs from Elops to Albula. Such reductions and fusions occur in osteoglossomorphs also, but the lack of epurals and uroneurals separates most osteoglossomorphs (except Hiodon) from all other teleosts.

Notizen: The fertilized egg and the two-cell stage and four-cell stage of the marsupial Antechinus stuartii were studied by transmission electron microscopy. The features that make the fertilized egg of Antechinus stuartii different from those of any eutherian mammal are (1) the presence of a shell and (2) the relatively large quantity and polarized distribution of cytoplasmic inclusions, including lipid, protein yolk bodies, and protein fibers. Mitochondria and vesicles of smooth endoplasmic reticulum are also polarized in distribution. Early cleavage differs from that of eutherians in several ways: (1) it occurs in the uterus; (2) there is extrusion of a large, single, membrane-bound yolk mass at first cleavage; and (3) blastomeres become separated after the second cleavage division and thus do not adhere by cell-to-cell contacts. Prior to the second division, blastomeres are connected to each other by remnants of the midbody and to the yolk mass by remnants of a cytoplasmic bridge. The yolk mass after extrusion is surrounded by plasma membrane and contains inclusions of lipid, protein yolk bodies, and fibers, as well as mitochondria and smooth endoplasmic reticulum. The blastomeres of the two-cell and four-cell stages also show intracellular polarization in the distribution of retained inclusions and organelles. Vesicles developing at the periphery of blastomeres and discharging their contents extracellularly increase in size and number from the fertilized egg to the four-cell stage. The discharged contents may be implicated in early development of the blastula cavity.

Notizen: Morphology of branchial chloride cells in the freshwater teleosts Plecoglossus altivelis, Cyprinus carpio, and Oreochromis mossambicus was studied by light and transmission electron microscopy. The chloride cell has an apical membrane directly in contact with the outer medium. Generally, two or more neighboring chloride cells share an apical pit, forming a multicellular complex. The chloride cells form a multicellular complex in which cells differ in cytoplasmic electron density, development of tubular system, and in cell size. Chloride cells are linked by junctions which are shallower than the tight junctions that occur between neighboring pavement cells or between pavement and chloride cells. Multicellular complexes of chloride cells create additional paracellular pathways marked apically by the shallower junctions. Since junctional structure affects transepithelial permeability, development of multicellular complexes of chloride cells in freshwater fishes may be related to the transport of some substances as in the gills of marine fishes.

Notizen: The nerve pathways in the praesoma are described for the first time for a member of the genus Octospinifer. Eleven nerves, five paired, and one single, are traced from the cerebral ganglion to their associations with the musculature of the body wall, neck sense organs, and the musculature of the proboscis wall and the invertor muscles of the proboscis. The structure and location of the Stützzelle (support cell) and its association with the neck sense organs are described. A comparison with the nervous system in the praesoma of Noechinorhynchus and Paulisentis is discussed.

Notizen: The morphology of the tongue of agamid lizards is reviewed and discussed in the context of its functional and phylogenetic significance. It is shown that in several features, including the development of the central musculature of the tongue into a ring muscle and the presence of a genioglossus internus muscle in adults, the tongue in most agamids is derived relative to that in other squamates. In some features, such as the vertical connective tissue septa, agamids share primitive features with Sphenodon. Some conditions found in agamids are also found in anoline iguanids. Two genera, Uromastyx and Leiolepis, differ significantly from other agamids in intrinsic tongue musculature. The functional significance of the unique tongue morphology is that agamids utilize a different mechanism of tongue protrusion from that of other lizards. This mechanism involves the production of force against the lingual process, leading to an anterior slide of the tongue, and is detailed in this paper. Finally, I discuss the mechanical basis for the transformation series of tongue protrusion mechanisms from agamids to chamaeleonids. It is suggested that the mechanism of tongue protrusion in chamaeleonids is not unique, but is a highly derived state of the condition found in agamids.

Notizen: The fine structure of the Malpighian tubules (Mts) and rectal sac (rs) is described in the larval tick Ornithodoros (Pavlovskyella) erraticus before and after feeding up to molting. Mts consist of structurally different pyramidal and cuboidal cells along the entire length of the tubule. In unfed ticks, the two types of cell are characterized by apical microvilli and a few basal membrane infoldings. The abundant pyramidal cells contain glycogen particles, lipid droplets, lysosomelike structures, and rickettsialike microorganisms. After feeding but before molting, pyramidal cells loose glycogen particles and become very dense and dramatically reduced in size. These cells are possibly involved in the formation of guanine crystalloids as an excretory product. In contrast, cuboidal cells, filled with glycogen particles, free ribosomes, and mitochondria in unfed larvae, grow steadily after feeding; their cytoplasm becomes rich in lipid droplets in addition to showing an increase in glycogen particles. Lipid and glycogen could be the source of energy required for water and ion reabsoprtion in which cuboidal cells are probably involved. The paired-lobe rs consists of one type of cuboidal cells with basal membrane infoldings and a brush-border microvilli covered by a fuzzy coat of glycocalyx. These cells grow rapidly after feeding; they have functional features indicating extensive, selective reabsorption of essential components from excretory products.

Notizen: The peritrophic membrane of Drosophila melanogaster consists of four layers, each associated with a specific region of the folded epithelial lining of the cardia. The epithelium is adapted to produce this multilaminar peritrophic membrane by bringing together several regions of foregut and midgut, each characterized by a distinctively differentiated cell type. The very thin, electron-dense inner layer of the peritrophic membrane originates adjacent to the cuticular surface of the stomadeal valve and so appears to require some contribution by the underlying foregut cells. These foregut cells are characterized by dense concentrations of glycogen, extensive arrays of smooth endoplasmic reticulum, and pleated apical plasma membranes. The second and thickest layer of the peritrophic membrane coalesces from amorphous, periodic acid-Schiff-positive material between the microvilli of midgut cells in the neck of the valve. The third layer of the peritrophic membrane is composed of fine electron-dense granules associated with the tall midgut cells of the outer cardia wall. These columnar cells are characterized by cytoplasm filled with extensive rough endoplasmic reticulum and numerous Golgi bodies and by an apical projection filled with secretory vesicles and covered by microvilli. The fourth, outer layer of the peritrophic membrane originates over the brush border of the cuboidal midgut cells, which connect the cardia with the ventriculus.

Notizen: The seminal receptacle of Paragonimus ohirai contains not only mature spermatozoa, but also atypical and degenerate ones, suggesting that abnormal spermatozoa are retained in this organ. The spermatozoon is of a parallel biflagellar type with cortical microtubules, consisting of the anterior region, first mitochondrial region, intermediate (amitochondrial) region, second mitochondrial region, posterior nuclear region (PNR) and tail region (TR). The first third of the spermatozoon exhibits typical undulatory movement, while the middle part shows vibratory movement. At the area between head and midsections (H-M area) the peripheral doublets of axonemes are interrupted, and the external ornamentation is distributed widely around this portion. Throughout the immotile PNR and TR, the axonemes lack the dynein arms of their peripheral doublets. H-M, PNR, and TR ultrastructural characteristics are specific in P. ohirai spermatozoon and seem to be closely related to its pattern of movement.

Notizen: In uloborid spiders, eye loss is accompanied by increased visual angles, optical material investment, and potential visual acuity of the retained eyes. Relative to carapace volume, the six-eyed Hyptiotes cavatus and two four-eyed Miagrammopes species have greater retinal hemisphere areas and lens volumes than do the eight-eyed uloborids Waitkera waitkerensis, Uloborus glomosus, and Octonoba sinensis. In Waitkera, in which the eyes have little visual overlap, and in Miagrammopes, in which eye loss simplifies the spiders' patterns of visual overlap, increased retinal cell density enhances potential visual acuity. However, this occurs at the expense of potential retinal cell sensitivity.

Notizen: Intercellular bridges joining cells contained in cysts of Chortophaga viridifasciata testes were studied with light and electron microscopy. Preparations consisted of expressed whole cells (living, or fixed and stained) as well as sections. The secondary spermatogonia of each cyst are joined centrally by persisting fused interzonal bodies (fusomes) of incompletely cleaved cells. Shifts in cell orientation during anaphase are apparently responsible for central as opposed to chain linkage of cells. In the primary spermatocytes, the central fusome is replaced by a chain linkage, apparently resulting from the breakdown of the fusome into its original interzonal body components. Intercellular bridges are also present in spermatids, but there is no evidence to indicate the time of their formation (in the immediately preceding meiotic divisions or in the secondary spermatogonial divisions). The function of the compact centrally situated fusome in the secondary spermatogonial cyst is discussed as it relates to synchrony, number of cell divisions, spermatodesm formation, and fertility.

Notizen: Using laboratory-grown colonies of Plumatella emarginata, the formation of the floatoblast and the sessoblast was studied. Both types of statoblast develop in the funiculus. Toward the termination of development, the floatoblast secretes a gas and the float chambers are filled with the gas in about 20-30 minutes. The floatoblast thus complete is separated from the funiculus. Until early epidermal-disc-stage, distinction between a floatoblast and a sessoblast is impossible at least morphologically. Toward the late epidermal-disc stage, a future sessoblast becomes larger than a future floatoblast and attaches by its cystigenic side to the cystid. Very often it initially attaches to a lateral wall, then migrates to the basal wall of the cystid. Both the attachment to and the migration along the cystid wall are attained by peritoneal cells covering the sessoblast, specifically by those in the marginal zone of the cystigenic side. The sessoblast is separated from the funiculus precociously, shortly after attachment to the cystid. Then, it produces the capsule, followed by the formation of both the lamella, a homologue of the float in the floatoblast, and the attaching apparatus.Almost all polypides produce floatoblasts (up to 17 in number), but only a small portion of them produce both floatoblasts and sessoblasts. The number of sessoblasts produced by a single polypide is usually not more than 3 but occasionally reaches up to 6. When multiple sessoblasts are formed by a polypide, they are as a rule derived from primordia located adjacently on the funiculus, accordingly successively in a short period, but their arrangement on the basal wall of the cystid does not always correspond to that on the funiculus. Sessoblast formation is never associated with the death of the mother polypide. Ancestrulae derived from statoblasts never produce mature statoblasts, though may undergo gametogenesis. Several mosaic statoblasts consisting of floatoblast- and sessoblast-portions were found in some species of the Plumatellidae. A primordium of the statoblast seems to have a dual ability of differentiating into either a floatoblast or a sessoblast; but little has been known about the mechanism or factors controlling the formation of these two types of statoblasts.

Notizen: The giant anterior salivary gland cells from the large mammalian blood-sucking, glossiphoniid leech, Haementeria ghilianii, can be subdivided into three morphologically and functionally distinct regions: (1) a soma, responsible for the synthesis and storage of secretory products; (2) a long cell process, responsible for the storage and intracellular transport of the secretory vesicles; and (3) the site of exocytosis at the process terminal. The giant somata are densely packed with secretory vesicles. Deep plasmalemmal invaginations invade the soma and form an extensive system of extracellular lacunae. The rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and the Golgi apparatus are organized in the cell periphery, near the highly branched nucleus, and along the lacunae. The somata taper into long processes extending over several centimeters to the proboscis tip. These contain secretory vesicles through their whole length. In the process periphery, the vesicles are completely ensheathed by a concentric subplasmalemmal smooth ER cisterna. This originates deeply within the soma and extends through the whole cell process to its terminal. The ER provides support for up to several hundred longitudinally oriented microtubules. Secretion occurs at the very tip of the cell processes, each of which terminates at the proboscis tip at the base of a cuticular pore.We found synapses close to the sites of exocytosis, providing morphological evidence for neuronal control of secretion.

Notizen: Two fast-twitch fiber types are histochemically identified in the primary flight muscles of Artibeus jamaicensis. These are classified as type IIa and IIb according to an acid-preincubation staining protocol for myosin ATPase. All fibers in the bat flight muscles exhibit relatively intense staining properties for NADH-TR, suggesting a high oxidative capacity. The glycolytic potential of all fibers is rather low, as assessed by stains for alpha-GPD. This two-type histochemical profile appears to parallel biphasic electromyographic patterns observed in these muscles and leads us to propose that flight muscle histochemistry and activation are mediated by a “two-gear” neuromuscular control system. In contrast, earlier studies on Tadarida brasiliensis demonstrate the existence of a “one-gear” neuromuscular control system, exemplified by the presence of one fiber type. These observations are discussed with respect to the natural history and flight styles of several species.

Notizen: The distribution and histology of zymogen cells and the activity of digestive enzymes have been examined in the alimentary canal of larval, metamorphosing (stages 1-7), and adult Geotria australis (Geotriidae). Comparisons of the arrangement of the larval and adult zymogen cells are made with those observed in Mordacia mordax, a representative of the other Southern Hemisphere lamprey family (Mordaciidae), and with those reported elsewhere for holarctic lampreys (Petromyzontidae). In larval G. australis, epithelial zymogen cells are mainly restricted to the prominent pair of tubular diverticula which project forward from the oesophageal/intestinal junction. By contrast, zymogen cells of adults are present in the epithelium of both the anterior intestine and the intestinal caecum, a structure located at the new and more anterior oesophageal/intestinal junction which forms during metamorphosis. Amylolytic activity was greater in the larval divrticula than in the adult caecum, whereas the reverse was true for tryptic activity. This feature presumably reflects the high dietary contribution made by detritus and algae during the filter-feeding larval phase and by host muscle tissue during the predatory adult phase. The high tryptic activity in the caecum must promote the early breakdown of host tissue and thereby facilitate the digestion of lipids in the anterior intestine where lipolytic activity is high. At the commencement of metamorphosis, digestive activity and the number of zymogen cells declines markedly. By stage 4 the intestine has rotated anticlockwise almost 360°; the two larval diverticula have disappeared; and the new exocrine caecum of the adult has started to develop from a forward proliferation of intestinal mucosal cells. While the exocrine pancreatic tissue of larval M. mordax is unique amongst lampreys in its location within a single, large diverticulum containing an extensive network of mucosal folds, that of the adult is found in the same position as in G. australis and holarctic lampreys.

Notizen: Cytoarchitectonic studies of the pretectum and diencephalon of five teleosts (Gaidropsarus mediterraneus, Syngnathus acus, Gasterosteus aculeatus, Pleuronectes platessa, and Coris julis) have shown the hypothalamus to be the most highly developed region in all five. The nucleus praeopticus magnocellularis is well developed in Coris and the euryhalines Gasterosteus and Pleuronectes; in Coris and Pleuronectes the nucleus lateralis tuberis is also prominent. Except in Gaidropsarus, however, the most striking area in the hypothalamus is the glomerulosus complex, with its voluminous nucleus glomerulosus. In Coris and Pleuronectes a glomerular offshoot of this nucleus in the dorsal thalamus is evidence of its being homologous with the nucleus anterior thalami of primitive teleosts. The nucleus diffusus is also very large in all except Gaidropsarus. In Coris and Syngnathus the saccus vasculosus exhibits a peduncle, and in Pleuronectes it invades the hypophysis. The descriptive analysis is complemented by measuring the relative size and cell density of the cell groups studied.A comparison among the five species studied shows that nuclei probably related to the olfactory system are more developed in Gaidropsarus and Pleuronectes, whereas the supposed visual nuclei are prominent in Coris, Gasterosteus, and Syngnathus but poorly developed in Gaidropsarus. In general, the findings of the present study, together with published results concerning Lizza (Gómez-Segade and Anadón, Trab. Inst. Cajal Invest. Biol. 72:187-214, 1981), show that Coris has the most complex diencephalon among these species. Moreover, Gaidropsarus presents an organization very different from that of the other five species and probably represents a parallel evolutionary lineage.

Notizen: Electromyography and cinematography were used to determine the activity of epaxial muscles of colubrid snakes during terrestrial and aquatic lateral undulatory locomotion. In both types of lateral undulation, at a given longitudinal position, segments of three muscles (Mm. semispinalis-spinalis, longissimus dorsi, and iliocostalis) usually show synchronous activity. Muscle activity propagates posteriorly and generally is unilateral. With each muscle, large numbers of adjacent segments (30 to 100) show simultaneous activity. Terrestrial and aquatic undulation differ in two major respects. (1) During terrestrial undulation, muscle activity in a particular region begins when that portion of the body has reached maximal convex flexion and ends when it is maximally concave; this phase relation is uniform along the entire snake. During swimming, however, muscle activity passes posteriorly faster than the wave of vertebral flexion, causing the relation of muscle activity to flexion to change along the length of the snake. (2) In the terrestrial mode, the block of active muscle segments remains approximately constant in size as it passes down the snake, whereas during swimming the number of adjacent active muscle segments increases posteriorly. Despite the fact that Elaphe obsoleta has nearly twice as many body vertebrate as Nerodia fasciata (240 vs. 125), the only difference observed in the swimming of these two species is that a larger number of adjacent muscle segments is simultaneously active in comparable regions of Elaphe obsoleta than in Nerodia fasciata.

Notizen: Two groups of external excretory pores associated with glandular units (AU and LPU) were observed on the labrum, one pair laterally and three pairs posteriorly. Each external pore leads to an underlying conical, flask-shaped epidermal chamber. The wide base of this chamber is perforated by an internal pore that delivers secretions from the excretory duct of a glandular unit. The chambers serve to protect the internal pores from turbulence in the outside environment. Expulsion of secretions from the chambers is probably brought about by contraction of labral striated muscles, which synchronizes opening of the AU and LPU pores. A complex funnel-shaped structure forms the internal end of the excretory duct between each chamber and the corresponding pole of accumulation for the secretory product of a glandular unit. This structure, composed of an epidermal syncytium lined by a sleeve of several aligned auxiliary cells, probably ensures a tight connection between the epidermal chamber and the syncytium. The dorsalmost glandular units (LDU) have no pores in the vicinity of their poles of accumulation. Instead they secrete through cuticular ducts delimited by aligned auxiliary cells. External pores for these canals have not yet been located. The secretions of lateral pores may be mucopolysaccharides that play an essential role in agglutination of food particles soon after capture, while the secretions of posterior pores may contain glycoproteins that mix with food only after ingestion into the buccal cavity and probably start the process of digestion.

Notizen: The process of metamorphosis in tiger salamanders, Ambystoma tigrinum, is used to investigate motor pattern conservatism in vertebrates. Specifically, we examined cranial muscle activity to determine if changes in the motor pattern are correlated with the morphological or environmental changes that occur at metamorphosis.Twenty-three variables were measured from electromyographic recordings from six cranial muscles in 13 tiger salamanders. These variables described the configuration of the motor pattern: the peak amplitude of activity, duration, relative onset, and time to peak amplitude were measured for each of the six muscles. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses showed that there was no change in the mean motor pattern associated with the morphological transformation at metamorphosis: larval and metamorphosed individuals feeding in the water have very similar motor patterns. This was true despite significant morphological changes in the design of the feeding mechanism at metamorphosis and despite a significant decrease in aquatic feeding performance following metamorphosis. There was a change in the mean motor pattern to jaw muscles when metamorphosed individuals fed in water and on land: metamorphosed terrestrial feedings tend to have longer bursts of muscle activity then do aquatic feedings. The environmental changes in the motor pattern cannot be attributed to effects of differing fluid density or viscosity between water and air and are instead related to the shift to feeding by tongue projection on land. The decrease in aquatic feeding performance that occurs after metamorphosis is not correlated with changes in the motor pattern. Instead, the results suggest that changes in behavioral performance during ontogeny are associated with the transformation of hydrodynamic design of the feeding mechanism from uni- to bidirectional, and that motor patterns driving complex rapid behaviors may be conserved when behavior is altered by changes in peripheral morphology.

Notizen: Silver impregnations, immunofluorescence microscopy, and electron microscopy of the nervous system of Velella confirm previous reports that there are two nerve nets, one composed of small and the other of “giant” neurites. Only one of these systems, the small-fibered open one, shows FMRFamide-like immunoreactivity. It appears to be primarily a sensory network. Despite presence of a neuropeptide in these neurons, they did not contain dense-cored vesicles. The “giant” nerve net (closed system) shows many connections that appear syncytial in the silver preparations. While it is confirmed that gap junctions are present between some neurites in the closed system, it is likely that fusion of neurites also occurs and that the system is a partial syncytium. Membrane complexes with gap junctions are abundant in the cytoplasm. It is suggested that fusion occurs by the engulfment of small neurons by large, resulting in an excess of cell membrane, which is internalized with gap junctions still intact. These internalized membranes appear to break up into vesicles eventually. A similar process may occur in the “giant” swimming motor neuron net of the medusa Polyorchis.

Notizen: Electron microscopy discloses nerve endings in contact with gland cells situated in the labrum of Daphnia. Swellings of nerve fibers are in close contact with gland cell membranes, either on the cell surface or inserted into infoldings of plasma membrane. The axonal processes are single or double and lack glial wrappings. Inside the nerve fibers are vesicles of different sizes and electron density. These include granular vesicles, which often are dense-cored, and also clearer vesicles. Some presynaptic differentiations lie along the contact line of the axonal process with the gland cell membrane. The significance of the vesicles is discussed in terms of their possible content of biogenic amines, as described in other invertebrates.

Notizen: Jenynsia lineata retains its embryos within the ovarian cavity for a prolonged gestation. In the absence of egg envelopes, maternal - embryonic transfer occurs through ovarian fluid across apposed epithelia, relatively lining the ovarian lumen and the surface of the embryos. There are no hypertrophied extraembryonic structures that could provide expanded exchange surfaces for the passage of nutrients beyond the 8-mm stage, but structural specializations of the ovary then form, and these may sustain embryogenesis. Outgrowths of the inner lining of the ovary, villi ovariales, enter the pharyngeal cavity of the embryos via an opercular cleft remaining from early stages of development, after depletion of yolk reserves, until shortly before term. The ovary and its villi are lined by a monolayer of squamous cells showing evidence of vesicular transport of macromolecular substances both on the apical surface and at the basolateral pole. It serves for transcellular passage of maternally derived substances rather than as a source of secretory products. Most adjacent cells interdigitate, and the epithelium is continuous except for few gaps at the villous tips, which allow paracellular passage of particulate matter. These epithelial cells contain abundant filaments, electron-dense granules within the cytoplasm and the nucleus, sparse elements of the rough endoplasmic reticulum, a Golgi apparatus, and different sorts of vacuoles. The capillaries in the intraovarian lining are spaced most densely at the ovarian wall, less so toward the tips of the villi. The villi ovariales contain a network of connective tissue that forms endotheliumlike septa, which divide the interior into numerous different-sized loculi.

Notizen: The fine structure of the male germinal cells in testes of two salps, Thalia democratica and Cyclosalpa affinis, is identical. The earliest germ cells seen were spermatocytes, located at the periphery of the testis and sometimes connected by cytoplasmic bridges. They are spherical with an anucleolate nucleus, a pair of centrioles, aboundant free ribosomes, sparse rough endoplasmic reticulum, and about five mitochondria. No Golgi complex was seen. The earliest spermatids, though similar to the spermatocytes, are smaller and have only one centriole. Spermatids develop (1) singly, (2) joined by cytoplasmic bridges, or (3) in syncytia. The next stage has a flagellum, a single large mitochondrion with dense material in some intracristal spaces, and a patch of highly condensed chromatin in the nucleus adjacent to the centriole. Subsequently the nucleus and the spermatid elongate. During elongation (1) the mitochondrion remains lateral to the nucleus and the amount of intracristal material enlarges, (2) the central core of condensed chromatin increases, and (3) the remainder of the chromatin becomes organized into dense strands. When elongation is 75% complete, the dense strands of chromatin appear to coalesce, to become homogeneous and denser than the core of chromatin, and the mitochondrion transforms into dense tubules. Finally, the mitochondrion wraps around the nucleus and extends its entire length, ultimately becoming a single tubule spiraled about 45 times around the nucleus. The mature sperm head is 18 μm long, tapering from 0.8 μm posteriorly to a tip about 0.14 μm wide. There is no acrosome. The single (distal) centriole of the sperm gives rise to a 9+2 flagellum with a fuzzy coat and dense material peripheral to each of the nine doublets. Spermiogenesis in T. democratica and C. affinis is similar to that in ascidians, and the sperm share many features with sperm of colonial ascidians in the suborder Didemnidae. The results, therefore, suggest that salps are closely related to ascidians and support the view that colonial ascidians gave rise to salps.

Notizen: The penis of the silkmoth, Bombyx mori, consists of two parts covered with cuticle, the corpus penis and crus penis, and a third part, the radix penis, without a cuticle but surrounded by a thick sphincter. The radix penis is divisible into anterior and posterior parts. The ductus (d.) ejaculatorius passing through the penis has no secretory cells. In the anterior radix penis, the wall of the d. ejaculatorius is thin and without folds; in the posterior section, it is thick, with folds in its lumen. The glandula (g.) prostatica is divisible into anterior and posterior parts according to differences in the histological and morphological characteristics of the cells and their secretions, which contain many heterogeneous substances. In the anterior g. prostatica, secretions accumulate separately in the anterior and posterior sections before ejaculation. Unlike the posterior region, the anterior region displays a large mass(es) at the periphery of the lumen along the secretory cell layer. Judging from staining properties, the pearly body and the first layer of the spermatophore wall, which, after copulation, form in the female bursa copulatrix, seem to be derived from the secretions of the anterior and posterior regions of the g. prostatica, respectively. The secretion of the posterior g. prostatica contains initiatorin, which acts as a sperm-activating factor in the inner and outer matrices of the spermatophore. An ejaculatory valve is found between the radix penis and the g. prostatica. The opening of this valve is regulated by the surrounding sphincter, thus impeding the back-flow of secretions and seminal fluid in the radix penis and resulting in their transport outwards during ejaculation. The musculature of the d. ejaculatorius and the corpus penis promotes further transport of these secretions into the female bursa copulatrix.

Notizen: The fully developed oral disc of the tadpole of Bufo bufo consists of dorsal and ventral labia bearing, respectively, two and three ridges bearing numerous horny denticles, a horny beak provided with jaw sheath serrations, and large lateral papillae that are borne by two cutaneous plicae. As development progresses toward metamorphosis, these structures gradually regress until they disappear. Each cusped clavate labial denticle adheres, by means of a thin peduncle, to a similar labial denticle fixed in the lip and formed by a group of three or four cells that keratinize gradually and thus present remarkable differences in their morphology. Once all the cells of a group have been converted into horny tissue, the denticle sheds and is replaced by the underlying one. The beak serrations also are horny structures; each consists of a columnar band of cells which undergoes a gradual keratinization. The horny cells that detach themselves at intervals, being replaced by those of the underlying anlagen. The labial denticles and the beak serrations keratinize in two distinct ways. In the former, the desmosomal filaments appear to play an important role whereas, in the latter, the keratin seems to be synthesized “ex novo” by the ribosomes.

Notizen: Spermatogenesis of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus has been studied at the ultrastructural level after conventional staining of thin sections and after en bloc silver staining. Cytoplasmic dense bodies are present in all steps of spermatogenesis except in late spermatids and spermatozoa. These bodies are closely associated with the development of centrioles and of the acrosomal vesicle during spermiogenesis. After it first appears, acrosomal vesicle is linked to the nuclear envelope by electron-dense material and subsequently acquires a dense core. Later the acrosomal vesicle moves to the apical pole of the cell while maintaining its connection to the nucleus. Although chromatin was highly condensed in the head of spermatozoa, one or more nuclear vacuoles within the nucleus were found to contain uncondensed chromatin fibers. Silver nitrate stains several nuclear and cytoplasmic structures. In the nucleus it stains the nucleolus, specific regions at the periphery of the chromatin, the synaptonemal complexes, the nuclear basal fossa, and the nuclear vacuoles of spermatozoa. In the cytoplasm, silver stains the cytoplasmic dense bodies, the material that connects the acrosomal vesicle to the spermatid nucleus, the spermatozoan subacrosomal and periacrosomal materials, the intercellular bridges of spermatids, and the centrioles. Silver staining is abolished by pretreatment with pronase E, suggesting that silver staining is due to protein.

Notizen: Of concern are factored Euler-Poisson-Darboux equations of the type∏Nj=1(d2/dt2+(ρ/t)d/dt+Aj)u(t)=0,where, for example, Aj=-cjΔ, Δ being the Dirichlet Laplacian acting on L2(Ω), Ω⊂∝n, and 0〈c1〈…〈cN. More generally -Aj can be the square of the generator of a (C0) group on a Banach space. When the constant ρ is negative, the initial value problem for the factored EPD equation is ill-posed. Nevertheless, we determine how many initial conditions are necessary to guarantee uniqueness of a solution. This number jumps up as ρ crosses a negative integer from right to left. © 1997 by B. G. Notizen: We study on the initial-boundary value problem for some degenerate non-linear wave equations of Kirchhoff type with a strong dissipation:\documentclass{minimal} \begin{document} \[ u_{tt}=\left\| \nabla u\right\| ^{2\gamma }\Delta u-\Delta u_t=\left| u\right| ^\alpha u,\quad u(0)=u_0,\;u_t(0)=u_1,\;u|_{\partial \Omega }=0. \] \end{document}When the initial energy $E(u_0,u_1)\equiv \left\| u_1\right\| ⁁2+\frac 1{\gamma +1}\left\| \nabla u_0\right\| ⁁{2(\gamma +1)}-\frac 2{\alpha+2}\left\| u_0\right\| _{\alpha +2}⁁{\alpha +2}$ associated with the equations is non-negative and small, a unique (weak) solution exists globally in time and has some decay properties. When the initial energy E(u0,u1) is negative, the solution blows up at some finite time. In the proof we use the ‘modified potential well’ and ‘Concavity’ methods. © 1997 by B.G. Notizen: We prove existence, in a small time interval, of a classical solution having a regular free boundary, (i.e. the level set {u=0}) of a multidimensional filtration problem. The key point to get the regularity of the level set {u=0} is the proof of an a priori estimate for the L∞-norm of ut. © 1997 by B.G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: The paper considers the non-linear stability of a non-hyperbolic system of conservation laws with both relaxation and diffusion, which is commonly used for the modeling of two-phase fluid flows. Global existence in time is proved for initial data with a sufficiently small H1 norm. This result heavily depends on the nice structure of the relaxation system, derived from the initial system by setting the relaxation variables to zero. © 1997 by B. G. Notizen: The paper is concerned with optimal control problem for a non-linear parabolic equation with non-homogenous boundary condition and quadratic cost. The control is acting in a nonlinear equation. We derive some results on the existence of optimal controls. Then we treat optimal control problem by Galerkin method and we prove the convergence of optimal values for approximated control problems to the one for the original problem. Finally, we apply the results to give a simple example. © 1997 by B. G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Notizen: It is proved that there is a (weak) solution of the equationut=a*uxx+b*g(ux)x+f,on ∝+ (where * denotes convolution over (-∞, t)) such that ux is locally bounded. Emphasis is put on having the assumptions on the initial conditions as weak as possible. The kernels a and b are completely monotone and if a(t)=t-α, b(t)=t-β, and g(ξ)∼sign(ξ)∣ξ∣γ for large ξ, then the main assumption is that α〉(2γ+2)/(3γ+1)β+(2γ-2)/(3γ+1). © 1997 by B. G. Notizen: This article treats the initial-boundary-value problem of viscoplasticity using unified constitutive models without a yield surface. Semi-discretization with the finite element method (FEM) leads to a system of differential-algebraic equations (DAE) with strongly non-linear evolution equations for the internal state variables. A special family of partitioned Runge-Kutta methods is introduced which allows an efficient time integration of the semidiscrete system. Coefficients for methods of order one, two, and three are given. Finally, numerical results for some two- and three-dimensional examples using the model of Hart are presented. In a second part we will give the theoretical background and state a proof of convergence for the algorithm presented in this paper. © 1997 by B. G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Notizen: Correlative studies of luminescent responses, light and electron microscopy of Porichthys photophores during development were conducted. The photophores differentiate as an outgrowth of the basal cell layer of the epidermis, from which they delaminate into the dermis. Reflector cells are formed from dermal fibroblasts. Early photophore cells differentiate into three distinct cell types: photocytes, supportive and lens cells. Elaborate profiles of endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi bodies and vesicles suggest intense secretory activity in the early photocytes, while supportive and lens cells differentiate by two different transformations of the microfilament arrangement of primordial photophore cells.Luminescent capabilities of Porichthys photophores arise in two successive phases: (1) an aneural phase during which photophores become fluorescent, photocytes are in process of maturation and respond only to chemical stimulation and (2) a neural phase in which photophores luminesce upon electrical and pharmacological stimulation and are densely innervated with terminals showing relatively narrow neurophotocyte gaps. The presence of neural elements intimately associated with the early photophore anlagen suggests the involvement of the peripheral nervous system in the formation of photophores.

Notizen: The degree of minced rat muscle regeneration in the absence of nerve fibers was compared with that of normal regenerates between one and 270 days postoperatively. Up to around 30 days, the number of muscle fibers and their morphology were comparable in both normal innervated and denervated regenerates; both showed clear cross striations and peripherally located nuclei. Histochemically, SDH and myofibrillar ATPase (pH = 9.4) reactions were positive, but there were no typical signs of fiber types in either case of regeneration. The only consistent difference in the early period was the smaller fiber cross sectional areas in denervated regenerates than in innervated ones. Starting about 40 days, the muscle fibers in innervated regenerates became differented into different fiber types (fast-twitch-oxidative-glycolytic, FOG., fast-twitch-glycolytic, FG., slow-twitch-oxidative, SO.) but there were no such activities in denervated regenerates, although their SDH and myofibrillar ATPase reactions remained positive for a long time. Degenerating muscle fibers could no longer be identified in innervated regenerates. In the denervated regenerates, however, muscle fibers underwent atrophic or degenerative changes and were replaced by connective tissue. The complete disappearance of muscle fibers varied with individual regenerates. In some cases, it occurred about 90 days and in others, traces of muscle fibers could still be seen as late as 150 days postoperatively. Thus, nerves seem to be important primarily in the late phase of regeneration; namely, differentiation of fiber types and maintenance of the structural integrity of muscle fibers.

Notizen: Latero-frontal, para-latero-frontal, and frontal ciliary tracts on the gill filaments of Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin) were studied with light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Latero-frontal cirri are complex structures composed of varying numbers of paired cilia. The multiple pairs of cilia which constitute a single cirrus are closely appressed for a portion of their length; they then branch laterally from the central axis in a plume-like fashion. Latero-frontal cirri of adjacent gill filaments create a filtration sieve which should be capable of retaining particles smaller than 1 μm in diameter. Para-latero-frontal cilia are short, closely spaced cilia arranged as a staggered row along the frontal side of each tract of latero-frontal cirri. Latero-frontal cirri and para-latero-frontal cilia occur on ordinary, principal, and transitional gill filaments. Frontal ciliary tracts of ordinary filaments are divided into a central, ventrally directed coarse tract, flanked on either side by a dorsally directed fine ciliary tract. The coarse tract is covered by cirri which are comprised of five to eight cilia, while the fine frontal tracts are made up of individually functioning cilia. The frontal ciliary tracts of principal and transitional filaments bear only dorsally directed fine cilia. The unique direction of effective beat of the coarse frontal cirri of ordinary filaments, in combination with the action of fine frontal cilia and the strategic location of mucus producing cells, is used to describe a possible mechanism for the sorting of filtered particles.

Notizen: The skeletal structure of the stomachs of several decapod Crustacea is described in detail. The general organization of the ossicles is similar for all species and the homologies of the elements can be recognized despite large variations from group to group. The Reptantia are characterized by a complex ossicle organization while the Natantia, on the other hand, are characterized by a simple organization. The various types of ossicle organization found in the decapod stomach can be arranged in a series ranging from simple to complex. The Brachyura have the most complex ossicle system and the Penaeidea the most simplified. This graded series of complexity closely follows the evolution of the Decapoda.

Notizen: Records of electrical activity in the tracheal muscles of domestic chickens were obtained for a variety of ad libitum vocalizations. Primary attention was given to an analysis of events during the most complex call, crowing.Three pairs of muscles, Mm. tracheohyoideus, tracheolateralis, and sternotrachealis, can affect the configuration of a chicken's syrinx. The firing patterns of the three muscle pairs are related to their different abilities to affect the tension of the syringeal membranes. The influence of M. tracheohyoideus is most indirect and imprecise, and its role the least clearly defined. It appears to adjust the position of the trachea so that the syrinx is isolated from unpredictable and/or undesirable consequences of nuchal position and tracheal elasticity, and also helps draw the glottis caudad, thereby deepening the pharyngeal chamber. The other two muscles interact to control the tension of the vocal membranes. M. sternotrachealis relaxes the membranes by drawing the drum of the trachea caudad, or, via the syringeal ligament, by rotating the pessulus cranioventrad, or both. M. tracheolateralis tenses the membranes and/or prevents caudal movement of the origin of M. sternotrachealis, a necessity if the syringeal ligament is to rotate the pessulus.Vocalization depends on both syringeal configuration and appropriate air flow. Hence, tracheal muscles, syrinx, air sacs, and ventilatory muscles cooperate to form a vocal system. Cooperation elicits a surprising degree of redundancy. At least one call, a high pitched wail, may be produced by two very different techniques.
