Notes: Abstract Among possible structural surface defects atomic steps constitute so far the only well investigated defect. With Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) step density, orientation, terrace width, step arrangements and other structural parameters may be measured. Steps are present on nearly all surfaces, special step configurations may be produced by proper treatment. The presence of steps affects many surface properties like surface states, work function, adsorption and catalytic activity. It is therefore important to know the existence and properties of steps on all investigated surfaces.

Notes: Abstract Relationships between complex power flow pseudo energy, propagation constant and complex frequency are presented for acoustic waves in piezoelectric media. These relationships are essentially energy-power equations which apply to anisotropic, nonconservative, dispersive, linear systems, analogous to those obtained by Chorney and Penfield for guided electromagnetic waves. At vanishing piezoelectric coupling the powermode theorems split into a proper electromagnetic set and a proper mechanical set. By differentiating the power-mode equations with respect to the complex frequency further results are obtained linking the group velocity with power flow and energy storage. Conclusions may be drawn from these expressions regarding the signature of the dispersion (forward or backward waves). The equipartition of pseudo energy is established at cut-off, and the vanishing of the complex power flow at resonance. Examples including wave propagation in lossless and lossy media are included.

Notes: Abstract A new method of photoionization cross-section measurement based on the observation of saturation in the ion yield as a function of radiation intensity has been proposed. The photoionization cross-sections for the 62P1/2 and 62P3/2 levels of Rb atoms of the fundamental and second harmonics of ruby laser radiation are measured, with a tunable pulsed dye laser used for excitation. The following values of cross-sections are obtained: (1.7±0.4)·10−17 cm2 and (1.5±0.4)·10−17 cm2 for the levels 62P3/2 and 62P1/2, respectively, ionized by radiation of v2=14403 cm−1, and (1.9±0.5)·10−17 cm2 for the 62P3/2 level ionized by v2=28806 cm−1 radiation.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents an investigation of the effect of collisionless plasma on the equatorial gain of a high power dipole antenna. The plasma experiences a ponderomotive force in the non-uniform radiation field and the electron density gets redistributed; the plasma gets depleted in the centre and the near equatorial zone of the antenna. This nonuniformity in the electron density (hence in the dielectric constant) tends to converge the electromagnetic power to the equatorial zone. For typical parameters a 20% (i.e., ∼1 dB) enhancement in the gain of the antenna has been predicted within the limits of the perturbation theory.

Notes: Abstract The binding energy shifts of some 35 elements on formation of an oxide have been measured by X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. When these are plotted against the atomic numbers of the elements or against the heat of formation of the oxides, characteristic trends can be observed, for the interpretation of which a number of rules of general validity may be drawn up.

Notes: Abstract A standard television system in combination with a processing computer is used for measurements of LEED beam intensities of a spot pattern. The video signal of the TV camera contains the intensity distribution of each spot. This can be integrated for one selected spot by the computer which also takes care of automatic background subtraction. The processing program controls the energy of the incident electron beam and follows the moving spot position. One integration of a profile and thus the measurement of one point of anI(E) curve takes 0.5 s or less. Diffracted beam currents down to 10−11 A can be detected with the present experimental set-up. The output is immediately displayed and recorded in final reduced formI/I 0.

Notes: Abstract The effects were studied of the clustering of substitutional titanium with interstitial oxygen or nitrogen on the strength of the niobium −1 at.-% titanium alloy. The observed values of the yield parameters and flow stress were resolved into a sum of contributions due to the solution strengthening and intrinsic strength components. From the obtained relation the substitutional-interstitial complex hardening coefficients for oxygen and nitrogen in the alloy were determined and compared with the respective solution hardening coefficients for unalloyed niobium. It was also found that the strengthening contribution due to atomic size mismatch and modulus differences introduced by unassociated titanium is small in comparison with that due to substitutional-interstitial complexing. In addition, the alloy displays both higher strength and elongation with respect to the base material. Strain-ageing experiments were carried out on the same alloy and the results were combined with the information obtained from the stress-strain tests and the internal friction measurements reported in a previous work.

Notes: Abstract Transducer conversion losses as well as acoustic and optic attenuation in solidstate acoustooptic light deflectors are responsible for temperature and stress fields which lead to deformation, index fields and changes in acoustic wavelength. For users, these effects result in beam deflection, lensing, aberration and a deterioration in efficiency. The known Maréchal criterion and a new criterion noted by the author set a limit of about one quarter wavelength to optic and acoustic wave aberrations. Maximum deflection efficiencies and light powers are determined as functions of the geometry, thermal boundary conditions, material constants and operating modes. A new thermal figure of meritM th 1 equalizes the differences of the acoustooptic figures of meritM 2. To corroborate the theoretical results, performance limits for typical operating modes have been measured. Some new deflector designs are proposed and experimentally verified on the basis of the theoretical results.

Notes: Abstract The threshold temperatureT t at which thermally generated vacancies produce measurable positron trapping is a linear function of the energy of self-diffusionQ. SinceQ is also linearly related to the vacancy formation energyE 1v f , a measurement ofT t leads directly to a determination of the latter. It is possible to make a precise determination ofE 1v f without approaching the melting point—a major advantage in dealing with refractories or with metals having a high vapour pressure in the solid state.

Notes: Abstract The capture cross section of a trapping or recombination center for a charge carrier has been defined as the quotient of the capture coefficient and the average thermal velocity of the carrier distribution. For a Maxwellian distribution in a semiconductor band with an ellipsoidal effective mass tensor, this average velocity can be expressed as $$\left\langle v \right\rangle _{th} = \left[ {\frac{{8KT}}{{\pi m_t }}} \right]^{\frac{1}{2}} \delta _t $$ whereK is the Boltzmann constant,T the absolute temperature,m t the carrier transverse effective mass, and δt a correction factor for the anisotropy. δt is calculated as a function of the ratio of transverse to longitudinal effective mass. For an isotropic system δt is unity. For the conduction bands in Si and Ge, δt is 0.85 and 0.82, respectively.

Notes: Abstract The eddy current lossesP in a conducting hollow circular cylinder slowly rotating in a homogeneous magnetic field perpendicular to its axis are calculated for an arbitrary lengthl and an arbitrary ratio λ of the inner and outer cylinder radii. The results allow an electrodeless resistivity determination of such samples by torque measurements. To facilitate this and other applications, simple approximations forP(l) are given for a set of λ-values.

Notes: Abstract The influence of additions of interstitial oxygen and nitrogen on the internal friction spetrum of the niobium-1 at-% titanium alloy was studied. The nature of the various observed relaxation processes introduced by the presence of substitutional titanium is discussed. A thermodynamic analysis was carried out for two pronounced interaction peaks attributed to the stress-induced reorientation of single oxygen or nitrogen atoms around single titanium atoms and the respective binding energies were estimated. It was also found that, over the range of oxygen concentration studied, interstitial oxygen is completely removed from random migration by substitutional titanium atoms acting as trapping centres, whilst nitrogen population is always partitioned between mobile and trapped atoms even at very low relative nitrogen concentrationsC N/C Ti. A possible reason for the different behavior of oxygen and nitrogen is suggested.

Notes: Abstract Principles and applications of low energy ion scattering for surface analysis are presented. Basic features are the binary collision concept, the scattering cross-sections and the ion neutralization process. The potential and the limitations of the method are outlined. Some pertinent experimental aspects are considered. In a number of examples the performance of the technique is demonstrated for qualitative and quantitative composition analysis and for studies of surface structures. Finally a few comparisons are made with other techniques, such as AES, LEED, or SIMS.

Notes: Abstract Mode launching on a symmetrical multimode slab-waveguide by a plane wave incident onto the front side of the guide is investigated theoretically and experimentally. A single plane wave always excites a whole set of modes. Among these are, in general, three adjacent modesm-1, m, m+1 which are excited most strongly. The relative power launched into these modes is approximately given by the ratio 0.4:1:0.4. The theoretical results are confirmed by qualitative observations of the far-field mode patterns. In the far field the modes are separated by using a wedge-type waveguide.

Notes: Abstract This paper represents a brief review on some properties of cosmic masers, in particular on OH, H2O, and SiO sources. Emphasis is given to problems of radiative transfer in the maser line as well as in other lines of the masing molecules. The importance of these effects is an essential difference to laboratory lasers.—Differences and similarities between the radiative properties of cosmic masers and other (NLTE) sources of line emission having no population inversion are pointed out.—Various pumping mechanisms suggested for the interpretation of the observations are summarized.

Notes: Abstract Nuclear acoustic resonance (NAR) has been observed in tantalum single crystals with low concentrations of hydrogen (7.8 and 16 ppm) between 4.2 K and room temperature. The temperature dependence of the Δm=1 transition is reported for the first time. For the Δm=2 transition the temperature dependence of the linewidth is analysed in terms of the precipitation of a hydride phase in the Ta-H system. The differences in linewidth between virgin and pre-cooled runs can be interpreted by the effect of dislocations generated during the precipitation.

Notes: Abstract A potential new class of “monocyclic” lasing dyes is discussed and four families out of nine within the class are examined. The 2,6-diaminopyridines in acid are found to lase under flashlamp excitation but show low slope efficiencies and lower stabilities than the “bicyclic” dyes described previously. Other, miscellaneous dyes show oxygen quenching of laser action rather than enhancement and the best of these produces short pulses under long pulse excitation.

Notes: Abstract The absorption (α) and Faraday rotation (θ) spectra of 14 garnets belonging to the series Bi x Sm3-x Fe5-y Ga y O12 (0〈x〈1.05, 0.8〈y〈1.15) have been measured between 15 000 cm−1 and 19 000 cm−1. The figure of merit (θ/α) at 17 850 cm−1 (560 nm) increases linearly with increasing bismuth concentration up tox∼0.6 where it begins to increase less rapidly. For operation of magneto-optic display devices at 17 850 cm−1 there is no advantage in using garnets in this series withx〉0.8. The Faraday rotation at 17 850 cm−1 increases linearly with bismuth concentration whereas the absorption coefficient increases more rapidly. The presence of Bi3+ increases the intensity of all Fe3+ pair transitions in the garnet system as a result of the increased superexchange induced by Bi3+. This is in keeping with the observation that the intensity of the6A1g (S)→4T1g (G) transition in (RE)3Fe5O12 (RE=Er, Y, Dy, Gd, Eu) increases on traversing the above RE series as do the Curie temperatures of these iron garnets.

Notes: Abstract The incorporation of deep levels in high purity vapour phase epitaxy (VPE) GaAs is studied as a function of the crystal growth conditions. Two deep levels, at 0.4 eV and 0.75 eV above the valence band, are investigated using photocapacitance. It is shown that their concentrations are always equal and vary together as a function of the AsCl3 mole fractionX. Two regimes are observed, respectively, characterized by different variations of the total deep level concentrationN T:N TαX for lowX, andN TαX−2 for highX. In this last range,N T andN D are found to vary similarly.

Notes: Abstract Spatial hole burning of population differences by standing waves is considered in terms of Bragg-like gratings. This philosophy is used to explain increased saturation in two-mirror, single-mode laser operation with stationary active systems, modified mode coupling in the corresponding two-mode operation, an intensity dip that might occur in flowed standing wave lasers, bistable unidirectional ring laser operation, and increased saturation in distributed feedback lasers. The analysis is developed for both stationary media and for those moving with respect to the standing wave. The latter treatment is used to interpret washout of grating contributions in Doppler broadened media, and to determine level decay constants in stationary media. This last application constitutes a stationary system analog to the Doppler medium's Lamb dip spectroscopy and can be called saturation grating spectroscopy. Knowledge of the decay constants is particularly important in laser studies involving coherent mode couplings such as due to saturation grating scattering and population pulsations. It is further shown that the same equations result for probe and saturating waves propagating in the same direction. One then obtains a signal absorption with a heterodyne advantage. Inasmuch as diffusion affects the two methods quite differently, this phenomenon should be easily examined.

Notes: Abstract Saturated absorption of CO2-laser radiation in HCOOH gas was measured as a function of pressure. A simple rate equation model is used to calculate the saturation photon densities. It is concluded from these data that vibrational relaxation is collision predominant, and that decreased absorption, observed at high pressure and high radiation intensities, cannot be interpreted as diffusion bounded vibrational relaxation.

Notes: Abstract The Doppler-free two-photon transition by the use of two opposing laser beams makes the highly selective excitation of isotopic molecules possible. Saturation and pressure dependence of Doppler-free two-photon excitation with arbitrary amplitudes of the optical fields have been calculated and compared with those of the two-step transition and the single-photon transition. The result at the Doppler limit for low pressure gas reveals that the probability of the selective two-photon excitation with a moderate laser power can be larger than that of the single-photon excitation as well as that of the two-step excitation.

Notes: Abstract To compete with LED displays, inexpensive ac-EL layer structures have been developed with high visual contrast in bright ambient. They can be driven with 50 V, 10 kHz by a simple oscillator, and they consist of monograin ZnS powder layers embedded in high-dielectric resin on black back electrodes, puncture-protected by an inorganic insulator film. All spectral colours are available. White emission can be obtained by mixing blue-emitting and yellow-emitting EL powder. Blue-violet-emitting powder can be embedded in resin that is dyed with fluorescent molecules to obtain all colour tints imaginable. Patterns can be obtained by dusting tacky resin dots, like in colour TV tube manufacture. Preparation is described and materials listed.

Notes: Abstract An experimental facility was built where films of solid deuterium (and hydrogen) may be made with known thickness and irradiated with pulsed beams of electrons (up to 3 keV) and light ions (up to 10 keV). Films are made on a target plate held at 2.5–3 K. Film growth rate is calibrated with a quartz crystal film thickness monitor. The target plate, which can be heated so that films are removable by evaporation, may be used both as a calorimeter and as a beam current collector. Methods for measurement of secondary electron emission coefficients were developed, and preliminary measurements were made with electrons and hydrogen ions. For electron bombardment, the secondary electron emission coefficient of solid deuterium was much smaller than one. It was shown possible to use the set-up to study beam desorption of very thin films. Furthermore the set-up could be used for measuring the energy-reflection coefficient γ (i.e. the fraction of beam energy reflected from the target) for protons impinging on a heavy target material by using the target as a calorimeter.

Notes: Abstract Separation of isotopes of barium has been accomplished by laser deflection of a single isotopic component of an atomic beam. With a tunable narrow linewidth dye laser, small differences in absorption frequency of different barium isotopes on the 6s2 1S0− 6s6p1P1 5536 Å resonance were exploited to deflect atoms of a single isotopic component of an atomic beam through an angle large enough to physically separate them from the atomic beam. It is shown that the principal limitation on separation efficiency, the fraction of the desired isotopic component which can be separated, is determined by the branching ratio from the excited state into metastable states. In barium, repeated absorptions and emissions on the 5536 Å transition eventually result in decay from the 6s6p1P1 state to the metastable 6s5d1D2 state. This was observed to occur for all but 3% of the138Ba atoms. As a result, the efficiency of separation was about 0.7 for the 8 mrad atomic beam divergence employed. (Throughput was nearly 1 mg/day. No attempt was made to maximize this value.) The isotopic purity of the separated atoms was measured to be in excess of 0.9, limited only by instrumental uncertainty. The effects of near resonant atomic scattering and excitation exchange on isotopic purity are considered.

Notes: Abstract High pressure argon arc discharges are investigated in the pressure range up to 1000 atm. Experimental values of radiative properties such as the frequency-dependent emission coefficient and the total radiation source strength are compared with theoretical predictions. Solutions of the energy balance of wall stabilized high pressure arcs are presented, the agreement with measurements is good. A comparison of measured electrical conductivities of non-ideal argon plasmas with order measurements and with computations following different theoretical approaches, confirms the poor agreement between theory and experiment found by other authors for this regime.

Notes: Abstract Experimental investigations show that the 1/f noise intensityC and the contact resistanceR can be used to analyse contacts. The simply prepared contacts are fritted by discharging a capacitor, resulting in a multi-spot contact. A model relatesC andR to a number of contact spotsk with radiusa. More impulse-frittings at increasing energies decreaseC andR, thus enhancing the values ofk anda. From experimentalC vsR plots two regions are determined for GaAs: A fritting (a=constant) and A+B fritting (a∝k). Calculated values ofk are in good agreement with the number of peaks or pits formed by etching the semiconductor surface. From experimentalC vsW orR vsW curves, withW the cumulative impulse-fritting energy, the conclusion can be made thatka 3 is proportional toW.

Notes: Abstract The interaction of gas particles with three separated light fields has been considered. It has been shown that a resonance with the width equal to the reciprocal transit time appears in such a system. The resonance is due to coherence conservation and change of distribution of a number of particles by nonlinear interaction with the fields. Its properties are close to the Ramsey resonance in the microwave range. This new type of resonance may have a relative width of 10−11 to 10−12.

Notes: Abstract The superconducting and normal state properties are reviewed for exemplary matrix-impurity systems in the three distinct regimes of magnetic character of the impurity which have been identified. It is shown that these three regimes can be distinguished by thedetailed behavior of the depressions of 1) the superconducting transition temperatureT c as a function of impurity concentrationn and 2) the specific heat jump ΔC atT c as a function ofT c . These systematics of superconductivity in the presence of local moments appear to be sufficiently well established that it is possible to 1) ascertain whether the solute spin is long-lived (magnetic) or short-lived (nonmagnetic) compared to thermal fluctuation lifetimes at superconducting temperatures, 2) determine the sign and magnitude of the conduction electron-impurity spin exchange interaction parameter ϑ and the temperature dependence of the exchange scattering of conduction electrons bylong-lived solute spins, 3) derive, in favorable cases, information pertaining to the energy level structure of rare earth ions in the crystalline electric field of their superconducting metallic host, and 4) observe magnetic-nonmagnetic transitions of an impurity induced by the application of an external pressure or variation of the composition of a binary alloy matrix.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary This paper discusses the rigid-plastic flexure of plates subjected to dynamic loading. A piecewise linear yield surface and small displacements are assumed. The plate is discretized by assuming the constant moment mixed triangular element of Herrmann. Under the above assumptions the dynamic loading of plates is turned into a problem in linear inequalities which is a priori discretized in time. An approximate technique is developed, which takes into account the influence of the strain-hardening and the strain rate sensitivity of material. Some numerical examples of plates subjected to a given velocity distribution confirm the efficiency of this approach.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Certain results of formal processes of “approximation” in the kinetic theory are similar in form to constitutive relations of continuum mechanics. It is wrong to regard them as such. Continuum mechanics takes the variables entering constitutive functions as being independent. Thus it is possible to ask whether or not those functions be frame-indifferent. In the kinetic theory, on the contrary, all solutions automatically satisfy the principle of linear momentum. In order even to ask whether gross relations satisfied by solutions be frame-indifferent, it would be necessary to show first that those relations pertain to a class of solutions that correspond to velocity fields which differ from one another by arbitrary time-dependent orthogonal transformations of the motion. It is not presently known whether any such classes of solutions exist in the kinetic theory. Indeed, as the constraint imposed by the principle of linear momentum is frame-dependent, the existence of any such class is implausible. Be that as it may, to claim that the kinetic theory can bear in any way whatever upon the principle of material frame-indifference is presently ridiculous.
È peraltro errato considerarli come tali.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In such solids like rocks, soils, ceramics, grain en masse the plastic deformation strongly aects the current unloading modulus. The consequences of this effect referred to as the elastoplastic coupling both to the elastic and the plastic part of the constitutive law are examined. Particularly, it appears that such phenomenon induces a specific kind of the non-normality in the plastic flow law. The departure from the normality is studied in connection with the form of the elastic modulus variation basing on the notion of a coupling potential.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary We discuss the influence exerted on the stability of an equilibrium state of a second order differential-difference system by the delays existing in the coupling terms of the two system equations. On certain hypotheses an asymptotic stability condition is determined which is independent of the magnitude of delays but dependent on the magnitude of coupling. A simple method for constructing regions belonging to the domain of attraction of the considered equilibrium state is developed. Several alternative constructions and applications are discussed in detail.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In the vicinity of structural discontinuities such as cut-outs, stiffeners and support attachments high order polynomials approximate the peak stresses occurring there better than conventional low order ones, provided only the minimal continuity requirements are enforced. When transverse shear energy is neglected, C 1 continuity (continuity of both functional values and normal derivatives along interelemental boundaries) and no more than C 1 continuity has to be enforced. In particular continuity of second derivatives at vertices must be avoided. Here a family of C 1 triangular elements with arbitrary order of polynomial interpolation is created. The algorithm has been devised in such a way that convergence to the correct solution can be seeked by increasing the polynomial degree instead of decreasing the element size. This process becomes now as inexpensive as possible and particularly suited for automation.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary This piece of research deals with a general theory for the dynamical analysis of a particular system of rigid bodies capable of transmitting torque and motion between two angled shafts without alteration of the rotary motion at variable relative position of the axes of the shafts. The study, based on an equivalent mechanical model, leads to a system of four non-linear equations of the first order which, by numerical integration at given initial conditions, describes the dynamical behaviour of the system.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Numerical results on the wave form, the amplitude and the phase of the steady state solutions of the Duffing equation are obtained here. The steady state vibrations are studied:i) by a procedure of direct numerical integration based on the Runge-Kutta method;ii) by calculating the approximate solution of the equation which is obtained, as a particular case, from the theory developed in Part I. The results obtained by the two methods are compared and tested by the results of other Authors. From the comparisons it appears that the theory of Part I gives satisfactory results also in the cases of strong nonlinearity of the system.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A chemically reacting mixture of ideal gases is herein called a Stokes mixture — not of necessity a mixture of Stokes fluids although such are included — if the shear and bulk viscosities never contribute to the internal energy of the mixture when the constituents are undergoing dilatational motions. The mechanical and thermal features of these motions in a general binary mixture of chemically reacting ideal gases are studied.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In this work, we are concerned with the stationary neutron transport Boltzmann equation (in its integral form) in a parallelepiped. Functional methods allow us to prove that the integral transport operator, which is defined in L2 space, has eigenvalues depending continuously and monotonically on geometrical and physical parameters. We show that the eigenfunctions are continuous with respect to set of the spatial variables and the optical parameters. Finally, we remark that the same results are valid if the study is carried out in the Banach space C.

The principal results of the previous researchs are first of all summarised. These researchs concerned the vibrations induced on a cylinder in a free stream, and the vibrations induced on a cylinder in the wake of a fixed one. Main purpose of the present paper is to describe the experimental results obtained on two cylinders, one in the wake of another, both vibrating. Many cases are considered either with equal or different frequencies. An analytical model simulating the phenomenon is here developped, the analytical results obtained are exposed and compared with the experimental ones.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A rigorous constructive method is discussed for solving the linear integral equations which govern either the Poiseuille flow and the thermal creep flow of a rarefied gas between parallel plates. In both cases numerical results are presented for the nondimensionalized mass flow rate, and for certain quantities which are closely related to the mass and slip velocities. Critical comparison with previous results is made wherever possible.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The aim of the present paper is to show the results of a series of laboratory tests performed on water flowing into rectilinear conduits with a relative broad rectangular cross-section. A series of semicircular cross-section obstacles has been put along the whole length of one of the wider walls of the conduit, at a constant distance and normal direction to the conduit axis. A photographic documentation has also been provided, chiefly aiming at the qualitative study of paths followed by the water and to the determination of the position of vortices when flow occurs for small Reynolds numbers.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary From a general point of view, the problem of the optimization with respect to bending plastic collapse is studied for mono and bidimensional structures, subjected to fixed or variable loads. The conditions of existence and uniqueness of the solutions and those for the dual problem formulation are found. The mathematical properties enable us to point out some physical aspects of the problem. Some remarks on the beam and plate cases follow. At last the possible numerical applications are mentioned, pointing out their formal aspects.
