Notizen: Abstract Here we review the main thrusts of rainfall-runoff modelling with an eye toward the advantageous use of the massive date sets being accumulated and the modern computers capable of dealing effectively with such sets. More than a tutorial, this study is aimed at providing a unifying structure for analyzing available techniques. The closing section draws attention to the existence of an alternative methodology.

Notizen: Abstract The main purpose of this study is to assess the forecasting capability of the gravity model and to investigate the merit of including K-factors when using the model. Peak hour trip data was obtained for four study year periods 1962, 1971, 1976 and 1981 for the City of Winnipeg. Analysis of the calibration results indicated that the F-factors for the twenty year period were stable within a range of values. In general, however, the K-factors were found to be inconsistent from one prediction period to the next, and when used in forecasting trips they resulted in larger errors than without their use. The validity of using K-factors or the method which has been used to determine them is questionable. It was concluded that while K-factors are very meaningful in theory (as defined), they are not appropriate for use in predicting O-D matrices based on the method by which they are currently estimated (i.e. as a simple ratio). Further study is needed to investigate an alternative method of calibrating the gravity model such as the cell-by-cell regression method.

Notizen: Abstract This paper reports on research involving 23 “hard science” disciplines at a mid-western university. The data show a strong belief that research and teaching are complementary. Despite this, when it comes to time allocation, tradeoffs are necessary between the two functions. More time devoted to teaching is often detrimental to production of research output. More time was spent in research by higher performing researchers because they are more interested in that activity and rewards are attached to it. Administratively, evaluations tend to influence the direction faculty choose to follow. If teaching is to be restored to status equal with research, then the evaluation system must be changed to account for time input, and significant rewards for teaching must be offered.

Notizen: Abstract The significance of the “course effect” as well as the “teacher effect” on the student rating of teaching competence was assessed using analysis of variance. The results show that the significance of the former is quite considerable.

Notizen: Abstract There has been considerable debate on the evaluation of faculty performance by administrators. Much of the research has focused on the “publish or perish” issue on a university-wide basis rather than considering differences between disciplines which might invalidate the effectiveness of a global evaluation policy. This paper is a case study of three areas (Business, Psychology, and Sociology/Anthropology) at Kansas State University. Significant differences were found in the orientations of the different areas and in the criteria that are being used and that should be used (according to the respondents) for performance evaluation. Despite the significant differences in the departments' orientations, all of the faculty tended to agree strongly that teaching should be an important evaluative criterion.

Notizen: Abstract The instrumental variable-approximate maximum likelihood (IV0AML) method provides a technique to develop better models for short-time increment hydrologic data. In this method, a recursive input-output model, which consists of a deterministic model and a stochastic noise model are used. These models handle the system and measurement noise separately. The instrumental variable method has been developed to eliminate the bias in parameter estimates. The IV-AML method is investigated in the present study. Parameters of daily rainfall-runoff models are estimated by the IV-AML and by least squares methods and compared. The effects of a rainfall filter on parameter estimates are also investigated. Forecast accuracies of models whose parameters are estimated by IV-AML and least squares methods are compared. The results indicate that the forecast accuracy of models whose parameters are estimated by least squares method is comparable to that of models whose parameters are estimated by IV-AML method. The rainfall filter, on the other hand, reduces the parameter variation and improves forecasts.

Notizen: Abstract To the degree that faculty members take into account the relative financial rewards for teaching and research in deciding on the allocation of available time between these two areas, a modification of the reward structure may be expected to produce changes in the amount of time devoted to each. The purpose of this article is to examine with the help of some basic graphic tools of economics the possible results on the “quantity” of teaching and the “quantity” of research that may follow from a modification of the reward structure. The possible results are analyzed in terms of displacement, salary, and work effects of the modification.
