    Description: A derivation of the equations which govern the deformation of an arbitrarily curved and twisted space beam is presented. These equations differ from those of the classical theory in that (1) extensional effects are included; (2) the strain-displacement relations are derived; and (3) the expressions for the stress resultants are developed from the strain displacement relations. It is shown that the torsional stress resultant obtained by the classical approach is basically incorrect except when the cross-section is circular. The governing equations are given in the form of first-order differential equations. A numerical algorithm is given for obtaining the natural vibration characteristics and example problems are presented.

    Description: With the launch of the first Earth Resources Technology Satellite in July 1972 a major new tool has become available for decision making in the assessment, exploitation, and management of the earth's resources on a national and international basis. The current status of the earth resources survey program is discussed and the future potential is reviewed. The supportive roles of all stages of the system, including surface, aircraft, and satellite components are noted. Specific cases of application of ERTS data are presented together with a discussion of benefits that might accrue. Need for cooperative, coordinated efforts between participants is emphasized.

    Description: The buckling analysis presented considers rectangular flat or curved general laminates subjected to combined inplane normal and shear loads. Linear theory is used in the analysis. All prebuckling deformations and any initial imperfections are ignored. The analysis method can be readily extended to longitudinally stiffened structures subjected to combined inplane normal and shear loads.

    Description: The paper discusses the application of the variational equation to nonlinear finite element analysis. The problem of beam vibration with large deflection is considered. The variational equation is shown to be flexible in both the solution of a general problem and in the finite element formulation. Difficulties are shown to arise when Galerkin's equations are used in the consideration of the finite element formulation of two-dimensional linear elasticity and of the linear classical beam.

    Description: A technique for the measurement of high altitude X-rays associated with auroral events is described. The instrument package is boosted to the lower D region by a rocket and descends slowly by parachute. This arrangement facilitates coordination with the launching of other rocket probes during events of interest. A flight on Feb. 2, 1973 from the Churchill Research Range provided 17 minutes of X-ray data above 28 km. The flight was made into an intense break-up event and X-ray fluxes were observed during two episodes of the explosive phase. The reduction of auroral absorption during the later phases of the event suggests precipitation of energetic electrons unaccompanied by the lower energy precipitation responsible for the absorption earlier in the substorm.

    Description: The positive ion composition within a mid-latitude sporadic E layer has been measured with the aid of a rocketborne ion mass spectrometer launched from El Arenosillo, Spain on July 3, 1972 at 0743 LMT. Ionograms taken before and during the rocket flight showed a developing sporadic E layer near 114 km. Rocket data showed peaks in electron density and metallic ions at this same height. Both the maximum and total content of the metals are observed to be greater on the downleg than on the upleg measurement.

    Description: A review is made of the techniques for measuring ionospheric electron content, the most important parameter in the study of transionospheric propagation. Data collected since 1964 have yielded a synoptic description of the behavior of the electron content in mid-latitudes. Empirical relationships between the level of solar activity and the electron content have been developed permitting the prognostication of the electron content values. Marked discrepancies between prognostication and observation which occur during ionospheric storms are being studied to identify their causes. Electron content bite-outs during solar eclipses fall off with distance from totality more rapidly than simple theory predicts suggesting the action of eclipse induced neutral winds. Gravity waves propagating in the thermosphere leave a signature in the electron content records. Studies of such records have allowed the identification of the position of the gravity wave source, and its radiation pattern.
