In the recent crystallographic literature standard deviations of observed and of calculated values are often given with two or three digits. The present notice attempts to show that only the first of these digits is significant and necessary. All the succeeding digits of the standard deviations and the corresponding digits of the value itself are superfluous and should be omitted.In structure factors, digits after the decimal point are usually within the limits of error.
