    Publication Date: 2023-07-10
Description: The oxygen- and carbon-isotope compositions of planktic and benthic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils from Middle Oligocene-Early Miocene Equatorial Atlantic sediments (DSDP Site 354) indicate two important paleoceanographic changes, in the Late Oligocene (foraminiferal Zone P.21) and in the Early Miocene (foraminiferal Zone N.5). The first change, reflected by a delta18O increase of 1.45‰ in Globigerina venezuelana, affected only intermediate pelagic and not surface, deep or bottom waters. The second change affected surface and intermediate waters, whereas deep and bottom waters showed only minor fluctuations. In the case of the former the isotope effect of the moderate ice accumulation on the Antarctic continent is amplified in the Equatorial Atlantic by changes in the circulation pattern. The latter paleoceanographic change, reflected by a significant increase in 18O in both planktic and benthic forms (about 1.0‰ and 0.5‰, respectively), may have been caused by ice volume increase and temperature decrease. Both oxygen- and carbon-isotope compositions indicate a marked depth-habitat stratification for planktic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils. Three different dwelling groups are recognized: shallow Globigerinoides, Globoquadrina dehiscens, Globorotalia mayeri and nannofossils; intermediate Globigerina venezuelana; and deep Catapsydrax dissimilis. The comparison of foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils suggests that the isotopic compositions of nannofossils are generally controlled by the same parameters which control the isotopic composition of shallow-dwelling foraminifera, but the former are more enriched in 18O.

    Publication Date: 2023-07-10
Description: Vertical distribution of zooplankton biomass from the surface to bottom layers (3400 m) is examined. Material was collected layer by layer by a BR 113/140 net at 41°59' N and 133°37' E on July 2 and 3, 1970. Quantity of plankton below 1000 m was found to be much less than at corresponding depths in the adjacent regions of the ocean. This impoverishment is due to absence of oceanic bathypelagic animals in deep layers of the Sea of Japan. Absence of specialized predators (plankton-feeders) deep in the Sea of Japan results in underconsumption of interzonal animals that sink to great depths. Upon dying they should reach the floor in larger quantities than in the ocean.

(eds.), Initial Reports of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (U.S. Govt. Printing Office), 72, 731-755, https://doi.org/10.2973/dsdp.proc.72.133.1983
    Publication Date: 2023-07-10
Description: DSDP Site 516 contains a complete middle Eocene to lower Miocene interval with a well-developed Oligocene sequence that is more than 300 m thick. In this paper, the most important and characteristic benthic foraminiferal species from this interval are described and illustrated, and their quantitative and biostratigraphic distribution is given. Middle Eocene benthic assemblages, derived from pelagic intercalations in a partly turbiditic sequence, are low in diversity. Benthic assemblages of fairly high diversity occur in limestones, chalks, and oozes of the upper Eocene to lower Miocene. The consistently high rate of new species appearances at Site 516 during late Eocene and Oligocene contrasted greatly with the very slow rate of change in abyssal faunas at that time; there were no significant faunal changes at the Eocene/Oligocene boundary. The assemblages are dominated by Cibicidoides (mostly C. ungerianus or C. kullenbergi) and Lenticulina. Buliminids were also important during the Eocene and early Oligocene. Faunal comparison with other Atlantic DSDP sites and drill holes in the Gulf of Mexico suggest an approximately mid-bathyal (500-1500 m) depth of deposition during late Eocene and Oligocene.

    Publication Date: 2023-07-10
Description: Benthic foraminifers of the Coniacian-Santonian through the Paleocene were recovered from a continuous pelagic carbonate section from Hole 516F on the Rio Grande Rise. Sixty-five genera and 153 species have been identified, most of which have been reported from other localities. Bathyal depths are reflected in the benthic assemblages dominated by gavelinellids (Gavelinella beccariiformis, G. velascoensis), Nuttallides truempyi, and various gyroidinids and buliminids. Rapid subsidence during the Coniacian-Santonian from nearshore to upper to middle bathyal depths was followed by much reduced subsidence, with the Campanian-Paleocene interval accumulating at middle bathyal to lower bathyal depths. A census study based on detailed sampling reveals major changes in benthic faunal composition at the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary transition. It was a time of rapid turnover, with the extinctions of numerous species and the introduction of many new species. Overall, species diversity decreases about 20%, and approximately one-third of latest Maestrichtian species do not survive to the end of the Cretaceous. This shift indicates a significant environmental change in the deep sea, the precise nature of which is not apparent from the foraminifers or their enclosing sediments.

In: Ludwig, WJ; Krasheninnikov, VA; et al. (eds.), Initial Reports of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (U.S. Govt. Printing Office), 71, 551-563, https://doi.org/10.2973/dsdp.proc.71.122.1983

Description: Calcareous nannofossils from upper Campanian-lower Maestrichtian Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 71 Cores 511-23 and 511-24 are described and correlated with assemblages of similar age from piston and drill cores on the Falkland Plateau, South Atlantic Ocean. The Leg 71 cores partially fill a drilling gap of at least 20 meters left within a thick (50 m) carbonate section first drilled by DSDP Leg 36 at Site 327. Cores 511-23 and 511-24 both fall within the upper portion of the Biscutum coronum Zone of Wind and demonstrate an overlap in the range of Monomarginatus quaternarius with the ranges of M. pectinatus, Misceomarginatus pleniporus, and Biscutum coronum across the Campanian/ Maestrichtian boundary. Resolution of the sequence of highest occurrence datums for the latter species must await the recovery of a more complete section. Comparison of the Site 511 assemblages with those from Mas Orcadas Core 07-75-44 to the north confirms earlier speculation that the Falkland Plateau served as an important boundary between major water masses during the Late Cretaceous.

In:  Supplement to: Bukry, David (1983): Upper Cenozoic silicoflagellates from offshore Ecuador, Deep Sea Drilling Project Site 504. In: Cann, JR; Langseth, MG; Honnorez, J; Von Herzen, RP; White, SM; et al. (eds.), Initial Reports of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (U.S. Govt. Printing Office), 69, 321-342, https://doi.org/10.2973/dsdp.proc.69.113.1983
    Publication Date: 2023-07-09
Description: Diverse and abundant late Miocene to Pleistocene silicoflagellates at DSDP Site 504 can be correlated by tropical biostratigraphic zones and relative paleotemperature values to eastern tropical Pacific reference site DSDP 503A farther to the west. Early Pliocene assemblages, which were poorly known until now, are present and can be correlated locally between DSDP Holes 504, 503A, and 495, using species events associated with the new Dictyocha pulchella Subzone and Dictyocha angulata Subzone. Silicoflagellate relative paleotemperature values show major warming at 4.7 to 5.0 Ma (Cores 45-48), 3.4 to 3.8 Ma (Cores 32-33), 1.5 to 1.7 Ma (Cores 12-16), and 0.5 to 0.8 Ma (Cores 3-6). Major coolings occurred at 5.0 to 5.1 Ma (Core 51), 3.9 to 4.4 Ma (Cores 38-44), and 1.0 to 1.3 Ma (Cores 8-10). The appearance of Dictyocha longa is proposed to replace the asperoid/fibuloid ratio reversal as the bottom of the Dictyocha fibula Zone, because the non-evolutionary ratio reverses several times in the upper Miocene of Hole 503A, and at least once in Hole 504. Three new Pliocene silicoflagellates are defined: Dictyocha concinna Bukry, n. sp., D. helix Bukry, n. sp., and D. tamarae Bukry, n. sp.

Earth and Planetary Science Letters, 63(1), 63-75, https://doi.org/10.1016/0012-821X(83)90022-5
    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: During DSDP Leg 70, a 1.60 m thick manganese oxide layer was sampled in hole 509B. This deposit is formed of alternating layers of hard plates of pure todorokite, about 2 mm thick, and of a more powdery material deeply impregnated with manganese oxide, about 3 mm thick. A SEM study of the plates and the associated powder shows that the powdery material is a transformation of a pre-existing sediment, while the plates are a direct precipitation from a hydrothermal solution. The uranium series disequilibrium method was used to determine the ages of the plates. They are found to be in good chronological sequence and in accordance with the sedimentation rate of the area (4.9 cm/10^3 years) which implies that they have been formed at the sediment-seawater interface during a pulsed injection of hydrothermal solution. The powder presents systematically an “older age” which is explained by a slowing down of the injection while the normal sediment settles; the older age is due to the 230Th excess of the sediment.

    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: A large deposit of ferromanganese oxide coated sands and scattered manganese nodules occurs in the northern portion of Lake Ontario. The Mn and Fe contents of the concretions are similar to those in concretions from other environments, while their Ni, Cu, and Co contents are lower than in deep-sea nodules, but higher than in most previously described lacustrine concretions. Pb and Zn are high in the coatings and exceed the concentrations found in many previously analyzed Mn deposits. Within the deposit, Mn, Ni, Co, and Zn contents are correlated, and they vary inversely with Fe. Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, and Pb are present in the interstitial waters of the sediments underlying the deposit in higher concentrations than in the overlying lake waters, thus providing a potential source of metals for concretion formation. The origin and compositional variations in the deposit possibly can be explained in terms of the fractionation and precipitation of Fe and Mn as a result of redox variations in the lake sediments. Eh increases from south to north across the deposit in such a way that iron may be selectively oxidized and precipitated in the south and manganese, in the north. The upward diffusion of Mn, Fe, and associated elements from the underlying sediments probably provides the principal source of the metals in the south of the deposit, while metal-enriched bottom waters are probably the principal source in the north.

Description: Summaries of the transition element chemistry of oceanic ferro-manganese deposits report compositional trends related to water depth and to geographic proximity to continental margins1-4. Explanations of compositional variations include continental source influence3, 5, 6, diagenetic environmental control of manganese mineralogy that regulates the trace metal composition1, 3, 7, ionic mobility in interstitial solutions during diagenesis3, 8-10, and volcanic or hydrothermal influence3, 11-14. Glasby15 rejects a significant pressure control on manganese oxide mineralogy on thermodynamic grounds.

Description: The distribution of Mn and Fe in water, sediments, hydroxide nodules and crusts of Eningi-Lampi ore-bearing lake is regular, and concordant from the source to the areas of accumulation of these components. Mn-Fe hydroxide nodules and crusts occur at the water-sediment interface, and more rarely in the upper (0-5 cm) film of brown watery mud. The leading role in the formation of Mn-Fe nodules and crusts is played by the chemosorption and auto-catalytic oxidation in the course of interaction of component-bearing solutions with active surfaces. This is considered to be the basic process for the model of ferromanganese ore formation in recent basins. Despite the differences in the physico-geographical and geochemical characteristics of lakes, mediterranean seas and oceans, the formation of ferromanganese hydroxide nodules and crusts in these basins may be explained by this model.

University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, 166 pp, https://open.library.ubc.ca/cIRcle/collections/ubctheses/831/items/1.0053141
    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: The Dellwood Seamount Area, an area of approximately 10,000 square km., about 185 km. west of the northern tip of Vancouver Island is located at or near the northernmost end of the Juan de Fuca plate. The main purpose of the study was to test the hypothesis that the Dellwood Knolls mark the site of a short spreading segment connected to the Explorer Spreading Segment at one end by a transform fault trending along the southwestern slope of Paul Revere Ridge; and meeting the Queen Charlotte right lateral transform fault at the other end. An analysis of more than 950 km. of continuous seismic reflection profiles, in conjunction with other geophysical data, shows that (i) the Revere -Dellwood fault zone is a dextral transform fault zone connecting the Explorer and Dellwood spreading segments. (ii) The Queen Charlotte transform fault dies out at the southeastern end of the Scott Channel near the northeastern end of the Dellwood Spreading Segment. (iii) In the channel between the Dellwood Knolls (one of two possible locations of the Dellwood Spreading Segment), the sediments and volcanic basement are cut by normal faults, a feature which is characteristic of spreading centres with median valleys. The heat flow in this channel and in the Revere - Dellwood fault zone is high. (iv) The lower continental slope sediments west of Queen Charlotte Sound is faulted and crumpled and may be the northerly extension of the Scott Islands fault, zone and a site of slow contemporaneous or recently ceased subduction. The deformation of the thick turbidite sequence in the Winona Basin may also be due to subduction. Basalt from the area is chemically intermediate between tholeiitic and alkalic types. That from the Northwest Dellwood Knolls, however, is least differentiated and less than 1 myr. old in contrast to basalt from the sediment-draped Southeast Dellwood Knolls, the latter basalt having Mn-coating up to 50 mm. thick and is thus relatively old. This suggests that spreading may be occurring at the Northwest Dellwood Knolls and not in the channel between the knolls. The texture of basalts from the Dellwood Seamount Range vary depending on size of pillow and depth below pillow surface, but the mineralogy is essentially similar. An unusual rock probably best described as a plagio-clase-olivine basalt porphyry was also recovered from the Dellwood Seamount Range. Non-volcanic rocks recovered include glacial erratics, an authigenic sandstone comprising glacial fragments in an iron-rich cement, a laminated limonitic sediment and manganese nodules. The Dellwood Spreading Segment may have originated by left lateral transcurrent offset from the Explorer Spreading Segment, the offset caused by a change in the direction of motion of the Juan de Fuca plate.

Description: This paper reviews the state of the art in processing and extraction of ocean floor manganese nodules. It briefly reviews the mining sites where the abundant rich nodules occur and also discusses the metal distribution in nodules in view of economical processing and extraction of these metal values. The paper discloses in a detailed manner the physical and chemical characteristics of nodules, including porosity, surface area, water content and the effect of temperature on crystal structure of major constituents of nodules. In the extraction aspect of nodules, the paper reviews two different extraction schemes revealed in the literature, namely hydrometallurgical treatment and pyrometallurgical treatment. The hydrometallurgical treatments include acid leaching, ammonia leaching, leaching with reducing agents and leaching after high temperature pre-treatments such as in sulfating rousting, while the pyrometallurgical processes include smelting, chlorination-vaporization and segregation. The paper also covers metal recovery processes from leach liquor. An economic survey of processing nodules has been made in terms of problems associated with metal-marketing, and impact of metal production from nodules on mineral industries.

Description: The origin of the Campeche Escarpment in the Gulf of Mexico has been attributed to several causes. Some suggest that the scarp represents a fault scarp, others suggest that its origin is a function of upbuilding and outbuilding likened, in some cases, to that of delta building. Still others suggest that the scarp represents the detrital accumulation seaward of a barrier or reef complex. In order to clarify these possible interpretations, Site 86 was located on a bench at a depth of 780 fathoms in the vicinity of the Campeche Escarpment.

Description: Seismic reflection profiles across the Labrador Sea by Vema-19 and Charcot-S had revealed a rugged basement topography almost entirely buried by sediments up to 2000 meters thick. It was first suggested that this was the median valley of a mid-Labrador Sea ridge where oceanic crust was generated during the last phase of opening of the Labrador Sea but which is now virtually inactive and covered by sediment. The choice of a site where basement could be dated by sampling sediments that were believed to be the same age as the basement was difficult. Site 113 was eventually chosen in a local valley 8 kilometers south of a small knoll believed, from the Vema-ll record, to be a basement high.

Description: The single "raison d'être" for selecting Site 126 was to explore the pre-evaporite history of the eastern Mediterranean and hopefully to establish the paleoenvironment which preceded the Late Miocene salinity crisis. The selcetd site is in a deep cleft in the Mediterranean Ridge in the central Ionian Sea, a cleft that cuts more than 250 meters below the level of Horizon M and at the same time is floored by flat-lying sediments. A secondary objective of the cleft site-selection was to ascertain what kind of sediment makes up the horizontal fill and hopefully to determine some details of the history and mechanics of the depression-filling process.

The upper 9 meters consist of a moderate brown pelagic clay which changes to a zeolite-rich brown clay, brown clay zeolitite and zeolitite in the lower 9 to 24 meters. An Early Oligocene (35 to 38 my) nannofossil horizon occurs near an extrusive basalt encountered at 24 meters. These sediments are older than the 29 my age indicated by a recent identification of magnetic anomaly 8 in the "disturbed" zone. The age discrepancy suggests that the magnetic anomalies in the "disturbed" zone are still not identified correctly.

Description: The oceanic region between the Tonga-Kermadec Trench and New Zealand to the east and Australia to the west (see map at the back of this volume) has long been regarded as an anomalous region. Prior to development of the plate tectonic theory, it was known that the eastern boundary of the region was tectonically active, the western relatively passive. The DSDP Leg 21 overall objective was to provide initial coring data which would aid in reconstructing the tectonic history and relative plate movements of the Pacific and Indian crustal plates and determining the age of the tectonic features contained within the Tasman Sea region. In particular, the age and biostratigraphy of the oldest Pacific crustal section now being subducted into the Tonga-Kermadec Trench (Site 204) and the age and composition of the South Fiji Basin and of the basement rock (Site 205).

Description: The sea floor of the western Pacific is covered by five stratigraphic units: (l)an eastward thinning wedge of late Tertiary silty clay, primarily of volcanic origin, (2) a Cretaceous to Tertiary zeolitic red clay, (3) a Late Cretaceous to Tertiary chalk/chert sequence, (4) a Cretaceous clay, and (5) a basal chalk/chert sequence. The basal chalk was deposited on the young crust at the crest of the mid-oceanic ridge, while the upper chalk was deposited beneath the equator, and the abyssal clays were deposited in abyssal depths in mid latitudes. A kinematic model has been constructed that outlines the deposition of these units on growing crust, which not only was displaced westward away from the accretion center of the mid-oceanic ridge, but northward under the equator. The average northward component of motion for the Pacific plate has been 2 cm per year from 0 to 30 m.y. and 4.4 cm per year from 30 to 100 m.y. The deep-sea deposits of the Pacific are basically and systematically time transgressive. Claims of general synchroneity for either lithostratigraphy or acoustostratigraphy are rejected as inconsistent with both the drilling data and the kinematic model of Pacific pelagic stratigraphy. A few more well sampled holes in the ancient Pacific plate combined with an appropriately refined kinematic model should yield a 'rather detailed history of the Pacific plate since the Jurassic.

Description: Leg 14 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project completed 9 holes; 7 were located off NW Africa, 1 in Ceara Abyssal Plain, and 1 on Demerara Rise. Quaternary and Pliocene sediments consist of nanno chalk oozes and brown clay. The facies boundary (CCD) is near 5000 meters. Sedimentation rates are between 10 and 30 meters/million years (m/My) for chalk ooze and 2 to 4 m/My for pelagic clay. Redeposition off the Amazon produces terrigenous and bioclastic turbidite sequences with rates increasing, on the average, from 50 to 150 m/My. Small manganese nodules (coarse sand and small pebbles) are common in sediments associated with hiatuses at Sites 135 (Eocene-Miocene, Core SW1), 136 (Late Cretaceous- Miocene, Cores 3 to 6), and to a lesser extent at 141 (Middle Miocene-Pliocene, Core 7). Additional occurrences were noted in the pelagic clays at Site 137 (Late Cretaceous to Miocene). At 135-8 (Cenomanian) micro-nodules occur within a mixture of siltstone fragments, compressed planktonic foraminifera, fish debris, as well as chert pebbles and other redeposited components. Manganese concretions are generally younger than Turonian and are restricted to the predominantly oxidized part of the sequences, that is, where sediments are mostly red, brown, or yellow-colored.

Description: The study of lake deposits containing iron-manganese nodules is of significant interest for the understanding of one of the continental manganese and iron concentration processes. In the USSR, much attention has been given to the formation conditions of ore accumulations in the Leningrad region and Karelia. Semenovich came to the conclusion that Fe super(+3) and Mn super(+4) entered the lake during a long period of drought and were buried together with organic matter of plant origin. In the lake muds, manganese and iron are reduced; readily soluble compounds of Fe super(+2) and Mn super(+2) are transported by bottom waters. Oxidation of iron and manganese to Fe super(+3) and Mn super(+4) occurs, precipitating oxides on the bottom that form nodules and incrustations. This scheme of lacustrine ore genesis by the accumulation of manganese and iron is well founded.

Description: During the period of 22-28 July, 1978, five dives were made in the manned submersible ALVIN into the Atlantic Ocean 3800 meter depth radioactive waste disposal site located in the Hudson Canyon channel approximately 320 kilometers from the Maryland-Delaware coast. A geological description of the site was made by direct examination of the bottom topography, bedrock exposures, sedimentary and erosional processes, and sediment cores collected from the dumpsite area. Observations within a depth range of 3985-3830 meters revealed angular blocks and piles of displaced channel wall rock, boulder and cobble olistoliths of Eocene-age chalks derived from higher elevations on the slope, and bedforms such as ripples and scour marks which imply the existence of periodic strong currents. Local benthic fauna were sparse. Three low-level radioactive waste drums were examined from the submersible, and one was subsequently recovered for corrosion, and concrete deterioration analyses. Photographic and visual evidence suggest that downslope transport of objects such as talus blocks, olistoliths, and radioactive waste drums has occurred in this area. These observations complement those made by G. Keller in earlier ALVIN dives performed in 1972 and by the AOML(MG&GL project. COMSED (Continental Margin Sedimentary Processes) cruise performed in 1974 by the R/V Researcher.

Description: Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Legs 64 and 65 were planned as a coordinated drilling investigation of the Gulf of California. The primary goals of Leg 64 were to investigate the early evolution of a passive continental margin and to study hydrothermal systems in the Guaymas Basin. Leg 65 was designed to study the processes of crustal accretion along the relatively fastspreading East Pacific Rise for comparison with the slow-spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It was planned to drill a transect across the East Pacific Rise just south of the Tamayo Fracture Zone and to penetrate deep into the crust at one site near the ridge crest. The purpose was to sample crustal sections formed at a relatively fast spreading ridge in order to investigate the processes of crustal accretion in this environment.

Description: Quantitative and qualitative chemical analyses were performed on fourteen manganese nodules and crusts from the Waho Shelf. The analyses showed that submarine weathering has leached several elements, notably Si02, A1203, Na20, CaO and MnO from the hydrated glass surrounding the basaltic seeds of the nodules. The altered glass was enriched in Ti02, MgO, K2O and total Fe. The manganese bands formed on the altered glass were further depleted in Si02, Al203, and similar to the hydrated glass in Na2O and CaO content. The manganese-enriched zones also showed higher TiO2 and NiO than the basaltic seeds, and higher total Fe than pelagic nodules from the North Pacific. Qualitative measurement of Cu, Ni, and Co, showed relative enrichment in the manganese bands. A proposed model for manganese accretion in the Waho Shelf incorporates local submarine weathering of basalts, redistribution of Mn in marine sediments, and an influx of Mn "rain" on the sea floor.

Description: Detailed mapping of manganese deposits in the Kauai Channel and on the Waho Shelf adjacent to the northwest corner of Oahu is near completion. Manganese crusts and nodules are concentrated on submarine terraces between 800 and 2400 meters deep. Similarities In the geomorphology and sedimentary conditions where extensive manganese deposits are present suggest that these are primary factors controlling manganese distribution in the Hawaiian Archipelago. This information may be useful for guiding future surveys, and the technology developed for studiesiIn the Hawaiian Archipelago may have application to other areas of high topographic relief and low sediment thickness (i.e., seamounts, fracture zones, fault scarps, ridges, etc.).

Description: The continental edge of eastern North America is the passive margin with the oldest geological history available in the modern oceans. Rifting and seafloor spreading between the North American and African continents began in the late Triassic to Early Jurassic. A possible spreading-center jump and reorganization in spreading at the time of the Blake Spur Magnetic Anomaly (?Bathonian ) left some of the oldest crust on the western margin of the North Atlantic. Penetration and sampling of such old ocean crust and the immediately overlying pelagic sedimentary cover, consisting of Middle Jurassic and younger strata, has long been a key objective in oceanographic research. This objective was accomplished at Site 534.

Three basic deep-ocean mining systems have been proposed, each of which will effect the removal under varying conditions of water, sediment and nodules from the ocean floor. This report summarizes existing oceanographhic information on potential manganese nodule mining areas at the date of publication and presents the results of field observations in a manganese nodule area of the North Atlantic Ocean surveyed during Cruise 15 of the R/V Robert Conrad.

Description: In addition to the large nodules of manganese dioxide that pave some regions of the ocean floor, much finely divided (〈1 mm) manganese dioxide occurs within the sediment column. The fine material is a good deal more widely distributed than the large nodules, but because of the almost microscopic size of the finely divided manganese oxide, it is easily overlooked. However, the micronodules and specks of manganese oxide on the tests of forarainifera are conspicuous when the washed course fractions (〉74 micron) of sediment samples prepared for the study of foraminifera are examined with a microscope. As a byproduct of our study of the foraminifera in many deep-sea sediment cores, thousands of washed samples have accumulated in our laboratory together with notes on the occurrence of manganese oxide in cores. The objective of our study has been to search for clues regarding the conditions most favorable for precipitation of manganese oxide, by reviewing our notes and re-examining some of the washed samples, and particularly to look for a possible connection between vertical variations in abundance of manganese oxide and the climatically induced layering of the cored sediments.

Description: A seabed nuclear probe which was designed to measure up to 30 elements at parts per thousand to parts per hundred levels has been tested for the analysis of simulated manganese nodule fields. The probe contains a neutron source, californium-252, which activates the elements in the nodules. The resulting radioelements which emit characteristic gamma radiation are analyzed in situ during 2 to 200 second counting intervals with Ge{(Li) or NaI(Tl) detector systems. The spectra taken in situ in a marine environment show excellent resolution and indicated the feasibility of mapping the density and economic value of manganese nodules. The study demonstrated the feasibility of in situ analysis to map the Mn, Al, Co, V, and Cu concentrations in manganese nodule fields, and this information together with correlations between Ni, Co, Cu, and Mn obtained from a related study indicates that Ni concentrations can also be rather precisely estimated.

Description: Manganese nodules collected off Baja California have layers (zones) which are texturally and compositionally distinct. Massive and mottled zones consist mostly of cryptocrystalline todorokite and birnessite containing relatively high concentrations of Mn, Ni and Cu. Compact, columnar and laminated zones consist mostly of more iron- rich opaque amorphous material. Within these two groups the individual zones can be distinguished in part by their clay content. These results indicate that systematic research on nodule chemistry, mineralogy, growth rates and beneficiation should include careful analysis of individual layers within the nodules.

Description: Internal growth features of manganese nodules reveal that many nodules are structurally, chemically, and mineralogically non-uniform, largely as a result of a complex growth history. If numerous investigators are to study the mineralogical and textural features of manganese nodules, the laboratories concerned must standardize procedures to some extent so that work is not duplicated and so that results can be compared fairly. In particular, we suggest that all investigators, for example, geochemists, mineralogists, and biologists who work with individual nodules, should pay due attention to the internal complexity of nodules while pursuing their individual specialized research. Detailed investigation of the relationships between the internal structure of manganese nodules and the mineralogy and chemical composition is essential to an understanding of nodule origin and of possible problems in economic use of nodules. Research of this kind is best controlled by use of good polished sections of whole manganese nodules.

Description: Occurrences and associations of ferro-manganese deposits at relatively shallow depths in the Hawaiian Archipelago were revealed by a series of cruises on the R/V Teritu. The deposits are accreting principally on the three prominent terrace levels around all of the Islands-at 400 to 800 meters, 1200 to 1600 meters, and 2400 meters as crusts and pavements. In some instances, examples of deposits at low depth demonstrate the rapid growth of ferro-manganese oxides and the importance of seed material for manganese coating to grow on artificial seeds. A large number of iron and steel samples encrusted with ferromanganese deposits have been collected by divers during the past year off Oahu beaches.

Description: Erosion of sediment at two sites within the siliceous-clay province of the northeast equatorial Pacific is investigated by examining radionuclide, radiolarian and percent smectite profiles of three cores. A numerical model of the sediment is presented that examines the effect of various particle rain rates, erosion rates and biological mixing parameters on these profiles. 230Th, because of its longer half-life, is a more sensitive tracer of erosion than231Pa. Because the input of these radionuclides into the sediment is not well defined however, conservative tracers, such as the percent smectite of the clay fraction and fossil radiolarians are used to constrain the rate of sediment recycling. Dissolution of radiolarians though can greatly affect the interpretation of the observed biostratigraphy.
