Notes: Conclusion In our opening remarks we noted the emphasis on the tools of computer-oriented music research prevailing in most writing. It is not likely that this situation will change for some time. It is apparent that there is a wide variety of computer applications being tested in music research and equally apparent that there is only limited collaboration and limited effort at devising common procedures. It is to be hoped that the future will see the acceptance of one music representation as a lingua franca; the development of widely usable programs with a central clearing house for such programs; and the development of data banks of encoded music scores, thematic indices of various repertories, and other information useful to the music researcher.

Notes: Abstract In the eighth century B.C.E. there lived in Jerusalem a prophet of royal descent whose name was Isaiah ben Amoż. His oracles, mostly in poetry, are concerned with the contemporary political scene dominated by the Assyrians, with the fate of the Jewish people in history in general, with the mutual relationship between God and Man, and with the ultimate fate of Mankind in the fullness of time. For Jews, these oracles are perhaps second in importance only to the Pentateuch. For Christians, they are of greatest relevance because no other book influenced Jesus to the same extent. And for humanity they are so much the expression of an idealistic Weltanschauungthat they are quoted wherever educators and statesmen try to imbue their audiences with the vision of, and the hope for, a better world. They are collected in sixty-six chapters, constituting the first and longest book of the “Latter Prophets.”

Notes: Summary This paper covers important developments in the use of computers for quantitative research in cultural anthropology, particularly in areas which (unlike statistics) are uniquely anthropological. These fall into statistical topics and topics in scaling and measurement. By far the largest single usage of computers by cultural anthropologists is for statistical summaries of field data and for simple statistical tests such as thechi-squared for the analysis of field data or for cross-cultural studies. As the discipline develops this situation will remain the same. In fact, the proportion of people who use the computer primarily for contingency tables, frequency counts, and correlation analysis may very well increase, since there are many potential users who would fall in this category and only a few potential users who would perform other operations such as multi-dimensional scaling or simulation. The few other computer techniques that would be relevant to anthropology, and for which the technology already exists, include linear regression, as practiced by economists, and linear programming (also practiced by economists), both of which could be extremely useful in the study of peasant economy. Careful research with such models could dispel some of the controversy which has been hindering the development of economic anthropology for the last fifteen years. The training of anthropologists who can understand the relevance of such models to their work may be far in the future, since the majority of them are still skeptical of most formal methods and of the computers which make them work.

Notes: Summary The exact equations of motion of an elastic bar are discussed, both in material and local coordinates. It is shown that for an ideal elastic material the former, but not the latter, are linear. An infinite number of conservation laws is shown to exist.

Notes: Summary Large amplitude free vibrations of rectangular plates with different boundaries and temperature distributions are analyzed in the light of Berger's analysis. A successive approximate method of Poincaré [10, 1] or a modified Galerkin technique is used to derive a Duffing type non-linear differential equation of which the solution is obtained by use of elliptic functions or by the use of method of successive approximation [7, 1]. The subject is treated in a simple and unified manner. Numerical results are obtained for different boundary conditions and are shown in graphical form.

Notes: Summary A simple new series, using an expansion of the velocity profile in parabolic cylinder functions, has been developed to describe the nonlinear evolution of a steady, laminar, incompressible wake from a given arbitrary initial profile. The first term in this series is itself found to provide a very satisfactory prediction of the decay of the maximum velocity defect in the wake behind a flat plate or aft of the recirculation zone behind a symmetric blunt body. A detailed analysis, including higher order terms, has been made of the flat plate wake with a Blasius profile at the trailing edge. The same method yields, as a special case, complete results for the development of linearized wakes with arbitrary initial profile under the influence of arbitrary pressure gradients. Finally, for purposes of comparison, a simple approximate solution is obtained using momentum integral methods, and found to predict satisfactorily the decay of the maximum velocity defect.

Notes: Summary Higher order approximations to the laminar boundary-layer flow of an incompressible fluid in the wake of a symmetrical disturbance are given in the present paper. The two-dimensional case, documented elsewhere in great detail, [1], [2], [3] and [4] is reconsidered. The Euler transformation is introduced and higher-order expansion terms are derived. The asymptotic expansions given in the paper are, of course, valid only to the extent that the boundary layer approximations apply, i.e. (for the rotationally symmetrical case) within a space of revolution with the centre of the wake as axis of symmetry. The terms neglected in the complete equations of motion become of order unity for very smallx, where the expansion is not applicable in any case (asɛ becomes large), and at very largeζ (respectivelyη),x being given. The axisymmetrical case is expanded in a like manner, but in both cases the inner and outer coördinate expansion problem of matching with the near wake, considered by Meksyn [16] and Berger [11] is not treated: this, mainly, because its detailed form would depend on the particular upstream conditions obtaining, a subject which is outside the scope of the present work.

Notes: Summary The behaviour of discrete mechanical or electrical systems under the action of disturbances shall be weighted. In a space which contains the solutions of the corresponding differential equations appropriate norms are introduced. The optimal design problem can then be interpreted as an approximation problem for the zero solution. A method for the delivering from the initial conditions is proposed.

Notes: Summary A method is presented for computing the scattering from any size of totally reflecting body by the inversion of one finite matrix, provided that the shape of the body can be derived by inwardly deforming a finite part of a body from which the scattering is known explicitly. Only the size of the deformed surface is limited by available computational facilities. The method, which is applicable to acoustic and electromagnetic scattering problems, is illustrated by applying it to a deformed infinite wedge for both electric polarization (Dirichlet problem: sound-soft boundary in acoustics), and magnetic polarization (Neumann problem: sound-hard boundary in acoustics). Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the convergence of the computations.

Notes: Summary It is shown that for a certain class of wings with subsonic, curved leading edges, in linearized supersonic flow, the perturbation potential can be expanded in terms of functions which are solutions of homogeneous flow problems. If the boundary conditions on the wing are of polynomial form, the homogeneous flow problems are elementary. Some calculations are carried out for flat wings with gothic and ogee planforms under incidence.

Notes: Summary The subject of this paper is the problem of acoustic diffraction by a perfectly rigid annular disk. The method of solution rests on formulating the problem in terms of an integral equation which embodies the steady state wave equation as well as the boundary conditions. This Fredholm integral equation of the first kind is converted into four simultaneous integral equations of the second kind by using Williams' integral equation technique. These four integral equations are subsequently solved by the standard iterative procedure when the frequency of the incident wave is low and the inner radius of the annulus is small.

Notes: Summary A common problem is that of identifying system parameters from short-term signal observations. If the signals have random components, and the parameters of interest are treated as random variables, then a Bayesian point of view provides at least one general approach to the problem. Although not too practical from a computational standpoint, this approach can give valuable insight into the fundamental limitations on how rapidly and accurately system parameters can be estimated, in situations where speed and accuracy may be critically important, and the number of unknown parameters is not too large. Two situations are discussed in this paper-that in which the input (driving) signals of the system are observable, and that in which they are not observable, but have known statistics. An example, involving the estimation of the natural frequency of a lightly damped second-order system in each of these situations is presented, in which the “threshold effect” in accuracy versus observation time is clearly illustrated.

Notes: Summary A numerical solution joining Carrier and Lin's solution near the leading edge to the boundary layer solution at large distance of the leading edge is presented. The solution is valid for any Reynolds number. Results are given for the skin friction, the integrated skin friction, the displacement thickness, the pressure along the plate and the velocity ahead of the plate. The asymptotic value of the integrated skin friction agrees very well with the exact value. The displacement thickness is already different from zero for small distances ahead of the plate.

Notes: Summary Electrochemical machining is the name given to the process of eroding metal by electrolysis. The anode in this process is a workpiece from which metal is eroded and the cathode is a shaped machine tool which is fed towards the work-piece (see Fig. 1). Erosion takes place when an electric potential is applied across the electrolyte filled gap between the tool and the workpiece. The electrolyte is pumped through the gap in order to remove the products of erosion. In this paper an attempt is made, under certain simplifying assumptions, to determine the resulting shape of the workpiece and the gap-sizes between the tool and workpiece. Basically two problems are treated in this paper; one for a plane-faced tool with complete insulation on the tool sides (see Fig. 2) and the other for an uninsulated straight sided tool (see Fig. 5). An exact complex variable technique is used and only minimal computer usage is required for final evaluations from derived analytic formulae.

Notes: Summary An efficient numerical method, used previously for linear differential equations [1], is here extended to systems of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Spline functions are used as the basic approximations. Residuals are liquidated by setting their integrals equal to zero over specified subintervals of the intervals of analyticity. Several diverse examples are given.

Notes: Summary The solution of the plane-strain problem of a circular cylindrical hole in a field of uniaxial tension is obtained in the linear theory of elasticity in which the potential energy function depends on both the strain and the gradient of the strain. The stress-concentration factor at the surface of the cylindrical hole and the stress-concentration away from the hole are found and they are compared with the analogous results obtained in couple-stress theory and in classical elasticity.

Notes: Summary The collapse shape and internal velocity field of an initially circular homogeneous fluid mass surrounded by a linearly stratified fluid are computed. During the initial stage of collapse, the fluid is assumed to be irrotational and inviscid while in later stages the Navier-Stokes equations are solved numerically by a modification of Chorin's primitive variable decomposition method. The final stage is analyzed by means of an asymptotic viscous long-wave theory.

Notes: Summary A procedure is developed for finding asymptotic expansions at high frequencies of the solutions of Helmholtz's equation subject to boundary conditions on certain guiding surfaces. This includes surface waves along surfaces of rather general shapes, and wave-guide modes in a class of non-uniform waveguides. Guided waves have some features of both eigenvalue (mode) and radiation problems. The method of this paper combines the two techniques, finding “modes” that propagate along rays in the general waveguide region and whose amplitudes vary along the paths of propagation. The phases of these modes are found from two coupled equations, one analogous to the eiconal equation of geometrical optics, and the other analogous to the eigenvalue or “transverse resonance” equation of waveguides. The amplitudes are asymptotic series in inverse powers of the wavenumber, and the coefficients satisfy a set of ordinary differential equations that can be solved recursively. It is found that the ray paths are not only functions of the refractive index (as in “pure” radiation problems), but depend also on the local geometrical properties of the guiding surface.

Notes: Summary In this paper a set of exact nonlinear equations is derived for gravity flows. By assuming the flow to be shallow and assuming the vertical acceleration to be small these equations reduce to the classical equations for long waves in shallow water. If only shallowness is assumed a set of equations results, which admits in the steady case periodic solutions for Froude numbers smaller than 1 and laminar jumps for Froude numbers larger than 1. In the last section potential flows are discussed.

Notes: Summary The integral of the form $$\int_0^\infty {\exp \left[ { - Pr\int_0^\eta {f(\zeta )d\zeta } } \right]d\eta } $$ , which arises in the convective heat transfer with constant wall temperature, is integrated by using Gauss-Laguerre and Gauss-Legendre Quadrature formulae. It is shown that the Nusselt number can be expressed explicitly in terms of the Prandtl number and the method proposed in this paper is valid for wide range of Prandtl numbers. Examples are given for the cases of flow over a semi-infinite plate and two-dimensional and axisymmetrical stagnations. The results are compared with the exact solutions for Prandtl numbers ranging from 0.006 to 100 (flat plate) and 0.01 to 50 (two-dimensional and axisymmetrical stagnation flows).

Notes: Summary The application of the multimoment integral method to the study of the base pressure behind a supersonic vehicle is examined. The primary purpose is to understand the exact nature of the Crocco-Lees critical point, which provides a uniqueness condition in the problem. The analysis is carried out mainly in Poincaré phase space, where the singularities of the differential equations are investigated. Two singular curves are found. The one which is physically meaningful for the near wake flow is located downstream of the rear stagnation point. This singular curve consists of saddle points which yield “wake” solutions, and focal points or saddle-foci. Only those saddle points which yield “wake” solutions correspond to Crocco-Lees critical points. Thus, the integration of the differential equations should be started from a saddle point both for the upstream and the downstream solutions. The current analysis then requires that one deal with only a one-parameter (freestream Mach number) family of solutions, rather than the two-parameter (freestream Mach number and Reynolds number based on thickness of the viscous shear layer at the rear stagnation point) family of solutions obtained in previous works. Finally, this paper clarifies anomalous details of previous numerical investigations carried out for the near wake by Webb, Golik, Vogenitz, and Lees.

Notes: Summary The paper is concerned with the slow stationary flow of a micropolar incompressible fluid past a sphere. Adopting the Stokesian approach of neglecting the inertial terms in the momentum equation and the bilinear terms in the balance of first stress moments, the equations are integrated and the flow parameters determined. The drag on the sphere is seen to be more in the present case than that in the case of non-polar fluids. It is found that in spite of the couple stress in the fluid, there is no resultant action by it on the sphere. Numerical work shows that the streamlines in the polar case have greater deflection towards the sphere than in the non-polar (or classical) case.

Notes: Summary A new derivation of the parametric expansion of the dynamic programming algorithm for optimal feedback-feed-forward controller design is presented. Matrix methods are employed to give clarity to the results first offered by Merriam. The advantages of the optimal design technique for multivariable problems are readily apparent. A unique technique is given for easily solving the design equations for the case of time invariant systems with gaussian load disturbance.

Notes: Summary A new theory for the constitutive equations in Cosserat elasticity is proposed. It is based on the assumption that the rotation vector depending on the displacement vector should be coupled with a rotation vector independent of the displacement vector. This eliminates the indeterminancies in stress and couple-stress encountered earlier.

Notes: Summary An approximation (the linear version of Burgers' equation with appropriate initial data) to a simple wave initial value problem for a set of two linear coupled dissipative partial differential equations is discussed. It has been shown that for the class of square integrable initial functions of which the spectra (Fourier-transforms) have bounded support 2Δ the approximation is valid for some finite interval of time [0, T(Δ)]. For some finite timeT 1 〉 T(Δ) the approximation may fail. However, fort→∞, it is asymptotically valid again. For the class of initial conditions mentioned above expansions in series of the two solutions, which for every finite interval of time [0, τ] are convergent, may be constructed.

Notes: Summary Shuman's method of filtering short-wave components is discussed. In certain cases, this method can be used to prevent nonlinear instabilities in numerical calculations. As illustrative example, the computation of a detached shock in front of a blunt body is considered.

Notes: Conclusions It is significant that the purification on a single passage of viscose through porous ceramic corresponds to the result of a two-stage filtration of it in industrial filter-presses with standard fillings.

Notes: Conclusions It was known previously that salts of the polyanhydrouronic acid obtained from native cellulose are resorbed in the organism during different times. It has been shown that materials based on salts of the polyanhydrouronic acid obtained from viscose silk likewise are not only resorbed but are also completely eliminated from the organism after a definite time.

Notes: Conclusions An examination has been made of the general laws of deformation of artificial fibres in their formation. A dependence is introduced between the reversible and irreversible deformations at various stages of the thread formation with constant stress and also the dependence of the stress on the value of the designated deformation.

Notes: Conclusions It has been shown that in the intensification of the ripening process of viscose the optimum temperature curve, which allows viscose to be obtained prior to spinning with certain values of ripeness and rate of its change, there are two periods corresponding to heating and cooling of the viscose. A method has been described for determining the optimum temperature curve with the help of an ACM. We have dealt with a definite production situation for which tables have been calculated and formulae obtained, which for certain initial and final values of the ripeness and temperature of the viscose allow a determination of the optimum temperature—time conditions for the ripening process to be made.

Notes: Conclusions 1. A method has been developed for the calculation of viscose conductors for solution input into spinning machines by the calculation of the travelling and transit flow rates. It has been shown that for calculation of solution flow in a viscose conductor it is necessary to calculate the effective viscosity of the viscose as otherwise a significant variation from the true value is possible. 2. It was shown that for the calculation of the main pipeline and of the viscose conductors in the branch pipes there is a possibility of work irregularity of the monitoring pumps and it also indicated the work of the ”filter-fingers” established in front of the spinneret.

Notes: Conclusions 1. The authors study how thread stress and the degree of shrinkage change with the orientation stretch ratio during forming of viscose fibre. 2. It has been found that at specific stretch ratios the fibre structure undergoes changes which affect its visco-elastic properties. The critical ratios approximately correspond to the orientation stretch ratio of textile viscose fibre. 3. An explanation is given for these effects of oriented break-up of the primary gel structure.

Notes: Conclusions It has been shown that the defects arise mainly during the formation of the fibre in the coagulation bath. They are due to the inadequate purity of the viscose and of the coagulation bath and also to the appearance of hydrodynamic flows, surface forces, and normal and impact stresses on the yet-uncoagulated elementary fibre close to the aperture of the spinnerette.

Notes: Conclusions It has been shown that the thermal fixation of the fibre with hot air at 195°C leads to the optimum results. Under these conditions the highest light-fastness of the triacetate fibre is achieved, the tensile strength and elongation at break do not decrease so markedly, and practically no chemical changes take place.
