Description: Error could theoretically be found as a function of time, midway between any two arbitrarily placed sample points. However, the analysis and the result would be difficult to use. As an alternative, worst-case instantaneous errors can be evaluated near the base-line crossing and at the peak of the analog signal. Location of sample points affects the error values obtained, but use of the points provides a means of comparing different reconstruction techniques. Zero-order conversion is discussed together with first-order conversion, second-order conversion, and third-order conversion.

Description: The guiding concept was to develop a simulation modeling method which can be quickly taught and learned, yet can be used to solve significant real world problems. SMAC consists of two manual simulation methods and one computer program. One of the manual methods is designed to impart an understanding of simulation; the other is designed to be a practical simulation method. The computer program will simulate queueing situations with up to five parallel servers or up to three series servers. The program is built around GASP 2A routines and retains the 8K capability of GASP.

Description: A new model is proposed which is based on the assumption that the actual traffic to be processed by an I/O channel system is generated as the overflow from a fictitious server system having Poisson traffic as the input. The number of servers and the mean arrival rate can be readily adjusted to verify the main value and the variance of the actual traffic to be handled. A closed solution for the stationary probabilities of state is obtained, and the parameters conventionally used to describe the grade of performance of queuing systems (such as mean queue length, mean waiting time, and probability of waiting) are defined.

Students with no previous computerized structures background are able to readily grasp the program's logic and begin solving realistic problems rapidly. The educational benefit is significantly enhanced by NASTRAN's plotting feature. However, the cost of operating the level 12 version makes the program difficult to justify.

Description: A computer program, BANDIT, is described which was developed for use as a preprocessor to NASTRAN to automatically resequence the grid point numbers for reduced matrix bandwidth. The BANDIT program accepts a standard NASTRAN data deck as input, resequences the grid point numbers for reduced bandwidth, and generates a set of SEQGP cards for insertion into the NASTRAN bulk data deck. BANDIT uses the Cuthill-McKee strategy for resequencing grid points. The program is operational on the CDC 6000 series of computers, the IBM 360, and the Univac 1108.

Description: Optimum channel selection among 12 channels of multispectral scanner imagery identified six as providing the best information about 11 vegetation classes and two nonvegetation classes at the Manitou Experimental Forest. Intensive preprocessing of the scanner signals was required to eliminate a serious scan angle effect. Final processing of the normalized data provided acceptable recognition results of generalized plant community types. Serious errors occurred with attempts to classify specific community types within upland grassland areas. The consideration of the convex mixtures concept (effects of amounts of live plant cover, exposed soil, and plant litter cover on apparent scene radiances) significantly improved the classification of some of the grassland classes.

Description: The applications area of the Texas A&M University remote sensing program consists of a series of coactive projects with NASA/MSC personnel. In each case, the Remote Sensing Center has served to complement and enhance the research capability within the Manned Spacecraft Center. In addition to the applications study area, the Texas A&M University program includes coordinated projects in sensors and data analysis. Under the sensors area, an extensive experimental study of microwave radiometry for soil moisture determination established the effect of soil moisture on the measured brightness temperature for several different soil types. The data analysis area included a project which ERTS-A and Skylab data were simulated using aircraft multispectral scanner measurements at two altitudes. This effort resulted in development of a library of computer programs which provides an operational capability in classification analysis of multispectral data.

Description: Two systems for processing remotely sensed image data have been discussed. The first system, IDECS, is a near real-time hardware system oriented towards processing multi-image data sets quickly and economically. The IDECS has convenient film input and color display output capabilities and implements simple kinds of decision rules. The second system, KANDIDATS, is a software system capable of performing many of the more sophisticated processing methods. Because of its monitor which handles all bookkeeping and its modular design, KANDIDATS easily allows the testing of new automatic processing techniques. After a new technique has been proven on KANDIDATS, it may be simplified and hard-wired in IDECS, thereby keeping the volume processing of remotely sensed data always up to the current state-of-the-art.

Description: A computer program is used to evaluate a 25.4 cm X-ray telescope at a field angle of 20 minutes of arc by geometrical analysis. The object is regarded as a point source of electromagnetic radiation, and the optical surfaces are treated as boundary conditions in the solution of the electromagnetic wave propagation equation. The electric field distribution is then determined in the region of the image and the intensity distribution inferred. A comparison of wave analysis results and photographs taken through the telescope shows excellent agreement.

The parallel computer has a memory capacity of 16,384 words of 18 bits each, one central processor unit, two 4096 word memory units, and one input/output unit. The I/O has no direct data connection with the CPU so that all data flow between these two units must pass through memory by way of the memory data bus. The primary functions of the onboard computer are auxiliary command storage, spacecraft monitoring and malfunction reporting, data compression and status summary, and possible performance of emergency corrective action.

The computer has to: (1) find the spectrum peaks, (2) determine the count rate in the photopeaks, and (3) relate the count rate to known gamma transitions to find the amount of each radionuclide present. Results show that tasks one and two may be done by the computer but task three must be done by an experimenter or a larger computer.

Description: Analysis and interpretation of data is the crucial phase of the decision making process. The interplay between variables must be considered as to their relative significance upon the final result, and sometimes time-sensitive decisions must be made when actual events deviate from predicted information, such as Apollo 13. As the number of variables increases past say four, the traditional method of cross-plotting tends to break down, and digital/analog results cannot present a sharply defined method of analysis. A graphical system, the carpet plot, is presented in which an unlimited number of complicated relationships of variables can be evaluated.

Description: A graphic method of analyzing radar scatterometer sea clutter data leading to linear relations between scattering cross sections and tan angle of incidence of the radiation is proposed. This relation permits formulation of simple analytic relations without reference to the ocean surface spectrum. Parameters introduced depend on the wavelength of the incident radiation and its polarization, and on wind and sea states. The simplicity of the expressions derived suggests a corresponding simplicity in the physical mechanism of radar sea clutter return.

In many instances, the multispectral detection of various phenomena is an empirical fact for which there is little physical explanation today. To date, most of the user applications that have been addressed are exploratory in nature. The closest approximation to an operational situation encountered so far is that of the survey of wetlands in North Dakota reported in this paper.

There are three modes of operation with the BELLFLOW system: source mode, comment mode, and mixed mode. In the source mode, all of the flowcharting information is derived directly from the source code. In the comment mode, BELLFLOW ignores the source code completely and derives the entire flowchart purely from comments imbedded in the program. In the mixed mode, the source and comment mode are combined. The mixed mode is unique to BELLFLOW and was designed to provide a self-documenting program source deck. Other features of BELLFLOW include: automatic placement, automatic line routing, paging, and generation of on and off sheet connectors.

The proposed approach to the problem is to collect all the necessary information into a single document, which is maintained with computer assistance during the life of the program and from which the required subdocuments can be extracted as desired. Implementation of this approach requires a package of programs for computer editorial assistance and is facilitated by certain programming practices that are discussed.

Description: PL360 is a phrase-structured programming language which provides the facilities of a symbolic machine language for the IBM 360 computers. An automatic process, syntax-directed documentation, is described which acquires programming documentation through the syntactical analysis of a program, followed by the interrogation of the originating programmer. This documentation can be dispensed through reports of file query replies when other programmers later need to know the program structure and its details. A key principle of the programming documentation process is that it is managed solely on the basis of the syntax of programs.

Description: Various aspects of the problem of program documentation and description are discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the problem of semantics. It is pointed out that the information produced by documentation of a program, if presented to several different groups, may mean entirely different things to these groups. Recognition of the fact that people look at problems differently is proposed as a more practical approach to the problem of documentation rather than extensive use of standards or strict formatting. The difficulties involved in searching for ways to provide a common ground for the transmission and use of information are discussed.

Description: Experience in maintaining up-to-date documentation for one module of the large-scale Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System 2 (MEDLARS 2) is described. Several innovative techniques were explored in the development of this system's data management environment, particularly those that use PL/I as an automatic documenter. The PL/I data description section can provide automatic documentation by means of a master description of data elements that has long and highly meaningful mnemonic names and a formalized technique for the production of descriptive commentary. The techniques discussed are practical methods that employ the computer during system development in a manner that assists system implementation, provides interim documentation for customer review, and satisfies some of the deliverable documentation requirements.

Recommendations are made to apply the workable combination of top-down, bottom-up methods in the management of shuttle software. Program structuring is discussed relevant to both programming and management techniques.

Description: A modification of the Dynamic Operational Requirements and Cost Analysis Program to perform traffic analyses of the automated satellite program is described. Inherent in the analyses of the automated satellite program was the assumption that a number of vehicles were available to perform any or all of the missions within the satellite program. The objective of the modification was to select a vehicle or group of vehicles for performing all of the missions at the lowest possible cost. A vehicle selection routine and the capability to simulate ground based vehicle operational modes were incorporated into the program.

Description: A general class of adaptive replacement schemes for use in paged memories is developed. One such algorithm, called SIM, is simulated using a probability model that generates memory traces, and the results of the simulation of this adaptive scheme are compared with those obtained using the best nonlookahead algorithms. A technique for implementing this type of adaptive replacement algorithm with state of the art digital hardware is also presented.

Description: This program, an extension of the linear equilibrium problem solver ELAS, is an updated and extended version of its earlier form (written in FORTRAN 2 for the IBM 7094 computer). A synchronized material property concept utilizing incremental time steps and the finite element matrix displacement approach has been adopted for the current analysis. A special option enables employment of constant time steps in the logarithmic scale, thereby reducing computational efforts resulting from accumulative material memory effects. A wide variety of structures with elastic or viscoelastic material properties can be analyzed by VISCEL. The program is written in FORTRAN 5 language for the Univac 1108 computer operating under the EXEC 8 system. Dynamic storage allocation is automatically effected by the program, and the user may request up to 195K core memory in a 260K Univac 1108/EXEC 8 machine. The physical program VISCEL, consisting of about 7200 instructions, has four distinct links (segments), and the compiled program occupies a maximum of about 11700 words decimal of core storage.

Description: The maximum principle is applied to minimum-time optimal-control problems, and an optimization algorithm is presented which can be implemented on a hybrid computer. The state and adjoint equations are set up on ASTRAC 2, a high-speed analog computer capable of 1000 differential equation solutions per second. The optimization algorithm is implemented on a PDP-9, an 18-bit, digital computer. The optimization scheme has global and local search phases and uses a vector optimization criterion. Second and third-order bang-bang control systems are studied as examples.
