Notes: Abstract An instrument is described that accepts information from a spectrum analyser, stores this in a 40k×8-bit word memory and hence provides a refreshed spectragram display of the most recent few seconds of data. A digital cursor gives the frequency (velocity), time and amplitude at any point on the display. The instantaneous mean velocity for the displayed flow pattern can be automatically computed, and the time-averaged velocity determined using a digital integrator.

Notes: Abstract An ultrasonic system for the transcutaneous measurement of blood velocity in major veins and arteries is described. Broadband r.f. techniques have been employed to allow various transducers to be used with minimum adjustment. Range discrimination of moving targets is provided and s.s.b. phasing methods allow separate measurement of both positive and negative radial velocity components. Results are presented in the form of dynamic power spectral analyses of the Doppler shifted signals.

Description: The possibility of improving the accuracy of terrain classification by preprocessing spectral data was investigated. Terrain maps were made using the following techniques: 1) preprocessing by scan angle function transformation, using the computer-selected best set of three channels; and 2) preprocessing by ratio transformation, using the specified ERTS data channels, simulated by fitting the spectral response of each of the 12 data channels to the ERTS channels by a set of weighting coefficients. By using a simple technique during printout, the maps were produced in color. The normalized scan angle function transformation resulted in the most accurate classification. The best ratio transformation for the Yellowstone Park data was the ratio of each channel to the sum of all channels. A supervised training program involving maximum likelihood decision for selecting the best spectrometer channels and similar techniques for digitizing the data of the analog magnetic tapes were used. Cloud shadows were recognized in addition to eight classes of terrain. Preprocessing of data resulted in more accurate maps, required fewer training areas (hence less preparation and computer time), and enabled much of the area formerly classified as shadow to be reclassified according to actual terrain type.

Description: A six-month systems study of earth resource surveys from satellites was conducted in early 1974. Skylab S-192 Multispectral Scanner (MSS) data were used as a baseline to aid in evaluating the characteristics of future systems using satellite MSS sensors. The study took the viewpoint that overall system (sensor and processing) characteristics and parameter values should be determined largely by user requirements for automatic information extraction performance in quasi-operational earth resources surveys, the other major factor being hardware limitations imposed by state-of-the-art technology and cost.

Description: The multispectral techniques have shown themselves capable of solving problems in a large number of user areas. The results obtained are in some instances quite impressive. In many instances, the multispectral detection of various phenomena is an empirical fact for which there is little physical explanation today. To date, most of the user applications that have been addressed are exploratory in nature. The closest approximation to an operational situation encountered so far is that of the survey of wetlands in North Dakota reported in this paper.

Description: A cooperative ERTS-1 investigation involving U. S. Geological Survey, National Park Service, and Environmental Research Institure of Michigan (ERIM) personnel has as its goal the preparation of terrain classification maps for the entire Yellowstone National Park. Excellent coverage of the park was obtained on 6 August 1972 (frame 1015-17404). Preliminary terrain classification maps have been prepared at ERIM by applying multispectral pattern recognition techniques to ERTS-MSS digital taped data. The color coded terrain maps are presented and discussed. The discussion includes qualitative and quantitative accuracy estimates and discussion of processing techniques.

Description: The goal of the second recognition map was to delineate various crop species in a portion of the Sacramento Valley, and at the same time to determine how accurately each could be classified and measured from ERTS-1 data. The new recognition map, a new and concise display of the old map, and classification and mensuration accuracy data are presented and discussed. The mensuration accuracy, in particular, is affected by the presence of an edge effect one resolution wide surrounding nearly all fields. Points on the edge are misclassified because they contain a mixture of, crop and bare soil. Using a processing technique to estimate the proportions of unresolved objects in this edge region, a much improved mensuration capability will be demonstrated.
