    Notes: Problems of a raft on a visco-elastic continuum may be converted to equivalent elastic problems by means of a Laplace transformation. In this paper a numerical solution of the equivalent problem is obtained by finite element or other techniques. This solution is converted into the form of an eigenvector expansion and then transformed into a numerical solution to the original problem by inverting the Laplace transform. This form of solution has the advantage of applying to any visco-elastic model, and of requiring little additional computation as a result of changing the visco-elastic model, the relative raft-soil stiffness or the load pattern.The application of the method is illustrated by results for circular rafts, strip footings of finite length and rectangular rafts, and particular attention is paid to a realistic soil creep function which is asymptotic to a linear function of log time.

    Notes: This paper described a technique for obtaining three-dimensional mine design information using a two-dimensional finite element program where the mining geometry consists of an extensive array of underground rooms and pillars. The technique is based upon a simple augmentation of forces in a two-dimensional analysis to produce the same average pillar stress that would occur in a full three dimensional analysis. Detailed comparisons between a three-dimensional analysis, a two-dimensional analysis (plane stress and plane strain) and an augmented two-dimensional analysis (also plane stress and plane strain) of stress about a typical coal mine pillar are presented. A local factor of safety is defined and then mapped over the pillar midplane, the immediate roof and immediate floor using the results from the full three-dimensional analysis. Comparisons of roof and pillar safety factor distributions obtained by the three-dimensional, two-dimensional and augmented two-dimensional analyses show that the minimum safety factors in the pillar (at the pillar sides) are predicted quite closely by the augmented two-dimensional techniqe (plane stress). The same is true of the immediate roof, although the three-dimensional safety factor tends to be higher in the roof (over the room) than that calculated by the augmented twodimensional technique. The augmented loading procedure appears to hold considerable promise as a very efficient and cost reducing techniqe for mine pillar design.

    Notes: A simple and analytical method of solving the problem of heat extraction from a penny-shaped crack having both inlet and outlet holes is developed by using a two-dimensional flow model when fluid is injected at a constant flow rate. Temperature distributions in both rock and fluid are obtained by taking into account the hydraulic and thermal growth of the crack. The outlet fluid temperature and energy extraction rate versus time are shown by some illustrative examples. Although the effect of thermal, contraction of rock upon the crack width is large, its influence upon flow rate and crack tip stress intensity factor is sufficiently small within the first several years so that the crack radius can be determined mainly by the mechanical deformation of, the rock.

    Notes: The results obtained from a loading test on a bored, cast-in-place pile instrumented with six pairs of load cells at different levels are compared with the results obtained from a non-linear finite element analysis based on the geotechnical parameters of the cohesive soils in which the pile was bored.Settlements computed using deformability parameters obtained by a standard laboratory test were much larger than the measured settlements. Satisfactory results are instead obtained assuming Ei=1000cu and cα=cu.The distribution of the vertical stresses within the pile and of the shear stresses in the soil adjacent to the pile obtained by the numerical analysis are compared with the measured values.A fair agreement is found at loads below failure but differences between experimental and computed values are found at loads close to failure.

    Notes: A general method is presented for the analysis of horizontally embedded anchors in an elastic soil. Provision is made in the analysis for the consideration of anchor shape, layer depth, anchor-soil interface condition, breakaway of the anchor from the underlying soil and interaction between groups of anchors.Application of the analytical technique is illustrated for strip and circular anchors, and these solutions are presented in the form of influence charts which may be used directly in hand calculations to predict the elastic load deflection behaviour, of anchor plates for a wide variety of material and geometric conditions.

    Notes: Recently, instability of slender piles during installation has been analysed as a non-conservative buckling process. For these results to be of potential use in practice, simple procedures are necessary whereby piles of arbitrary cross-section installed in ground with arbitrarily varying properties can be treated. This paper lists discrete element matrices which enable the prediction of the onset of instability in piles assuming conservative or non-conservative ground resistance. The same matrices can then be used to incorporate effects of incipient instability in driveability analyses.

    Notes: A numerical technique, based on a mathematical programming algorithm, is presented for the solution of geotechnical problems where elastic-plastic material behaviour is considered. The proposed approach can be adopted for geotechnical media characterized by any suitable yield condition, accounting, if necessary, for workhardening behaviour. The loading process is subdivided into a series of steps applied to a finite element mesh with geometry and material properties constant along each step, but with possible changes between subsequent steps.     Notes: A theoretical formulation and a numerical solution method are proposed for the problem of the time dependent consolidation of an elasto-plastic soil subject to finite deformations. The soil is assumed to be a two-phase material with a skeleton which may yield according to a general yield criterion with plastic flow governed by a general flow law, and whose pore fluid flows according to Darcy's Law. Governing equations are cast in a rate form and constitutive laws are expressed in a frame indifferent manner. The method of analysis is illustrated by several examples of practical interest for both a soil with an elastic skeleton and a soil with an elasto-plastic skeleton which obeys a Morh-Coulomb yield criterion and a non-associated flow law.

    Notes: Two finite difference algorithms suitable for long-time simulation of the exploitation of a two-phase geothermal reservoir are presented. One is based on the hopscotch method proposed by Saul'yev1 and analysed further by Gordon2 and Gourlay.3 The other is based on the well-known ADI method. Both methods use a Newton-Raphson iterative technique in order to obtain accurate solutions of the non-linear difference equations involved. Rapid convergence of the iterative schemes occurs both for single-phase and two-phase reservoir problems. One- and two-dimensional model problems are presented.

    Notes: The present study pertains to the finding of the lower bound solution, formulating it as a non-linear programming problem using the generalized method developed by Lysmer with certain variations to incorporate the non-linear no-yield condition constraints directly in the analysis. The method considers the family of plane stress fields having the property that all stresses vary linearly within each triangular element of some mesh which covers the soil mass under study. For this type of stress field it is possible to express all equilibrium conditions as a set of linear constraints and the no-yield as a set of non-linear constraints. The boundary condition constraints may be of linear equality or inequality type. By expressing some of the design variables in terms of the remaining variables the linear equality constraints are implicity satisfied. Such a technique minimizes the complexity of the problem by eliminating the equality constraints and reduces the dimensionality of the problem, saving much, computational effort. The optimal lower bound is isolated by formulating it as a non-linear programming (NLP) problem subjected to both linear and non-linear inequality constraints. The sequential unconstrained minimization technique using the extended penalty function method as suggested by Kavlie has been used to isolate the optimal lower bound. The method has successfully been applied to the passive earth pressure and bearing capacity problem.Numerical results are obtained and compared with Lysmer's solution to show the effectiveness of the present approach.

    Notes: Although there is a large number of constitutive models for sand available in the literature it is believed that a fresh approach, striking a balance between complexity and theoretical rigour, is desirable.The approach here has certain conceptual links with the Cam Clay series of elastic-plastic models, but includes the more general starting assumption that the yield function, plastic potential and failure locus should be given quite distinct mathematical expressions. Possible physical bases for the proposed forms are discussed.Ways in which the parameters required to define the model may be determined are suggested and the use of the model is then demonstrated. Firstly, it is shown that, where a limited set of experimental data is available, the model is flexible enough to be able to match the test results. Secondly, it is shown that, where a wide range of test results has been produced, it is possible to determine the model constitutive parameters from a small number of tests and proceed to make satisfactory predictionsfor other, quite different, types of test.The model is developed for sand at a single initial density, but the way in which the constitutive parameters might be expected to vary with density is discussed. The model is described for conditions of triaxial compression, and extension to more general stress states will be needed before it can be put to the test of incorporation in, for example, a finite element program.

    Notes: The disturbance of a clay mass, due to either the installation of a driven pile or the expansion of a pressuremeter membrane, is often modelled as a cylindrical cavity expansion. In addition, it is usual (and convenient) to assume that the expansion occurs under conditions of plane strain. For this problem a method of analysis is presented which considers the soil to be a saturated two-phase material with a pore fluid which flows according to Darcy's Law. Non-linearity in material behaviour is permitted as long as the effective stress-strain law can be written in an incremental or rate form. The use of a consolidation analysis allows the changes in effective stress and pore pressure to be determined at any stage during both the cavity expansion and the subsequent period of reconsolidation. Expansions may occur at any prescribed rate, including the very fast (undrained) and the very slow (fully drained) case. The technique is illustrated by considering the expansion of a cavity in two different types of elastoplastic soil. It is shown how these solutions may be used to model the disturbance of the soil due to pile driving.

    Notes: A ‘mixed method’ for the dynamic calculation of foundations on soil is presented. The half-space is computed analytically, the foundation with finite elements. The method is very well suited for the solution of three-dimensional problems including interaction.     Notes: The conventional use of the shear vane test is primarily restricted to the in-situ measurement of the undrained shear strength characteristics of saturated cohesive soils. Scant attention has been devoted to the use of this test as a means of measuring further properties of geotechnical interest. This paper presents an analytical study which illustrates the possible use of a shear vane test as a technique for the measurement of in-situ deformability characteristics of a soil medium. Certain plausible assumptions have been invoked for the analytical treatment of the shear vane problem. The vane blades are represented as elliptical shapes, the soil disturbance associated with the vane penetration is neglected and the soil mass enclosedwithin the swept boundary of the vane is represented as a rigid region. These, together with assumptions of classical isotropic elastic soil behaviour, enable the development of certain exact solutions for the torque-twist relationships of vanes fully or, partially embedded in the soil. The results indicate that the elastic deformability characteristics of a soil medium can be directly recovered from an examination of the initial stages of an experimental torque-twist curve. In particular, the measured parameter would correspond to the linear elastic shear modulus of the soil medium.

    Notes: Two-dimensional seepage from an array of triangular channels into permeable soil underlain at a finite depth by a drain has been solved by using the Baiocchi method. The use of this approach allowed a simple formulation of the seepage problem through extension of the solution region to an a priori known region. The new problem was treated numerically by using the S.O.R. method combined with projection. This technique proved to be very accurate when compared with analytical results and efficient from a computer programming standpoint.

    Notes: In a previous paper it was established with very simple assumptions that piles might undergo a directional instability during placement, of a type more usually found in aerodynamic problems. The study is here extended to piles driven into soils whose shear strength and lateral reaction modulus can vary with depth. The analysis consists of a parametric study of the effect of linear variation of the soil parameters with depth on the critical lengths for instability, and a comparison of site evidence with the critical lengths obtained from a stepwise-constant representation of the variation of soil parameters with depth. The theory is shown to give very reasonable estimates of the depths at which major deviation starts, although there is a pressingneed for more detailed site and laboratory data.

    Notes: The present paper deals with the dynamic steady-state force-displacement relationships (complex stiffness) for rectangular rigid foundations resting on a semi-infinite medium, consisting of homogenous, isotropic, linear elastic materials. The foundations are considered to be excited under harmonic vertical and rocking vibration. This gives mixed boundary value problems which cannot be easily solved by analytical approaches. Therefore, a numerical method is proposed here. The method is based on quite, simple equations, and is straightforward in computation, compared with other methods. Although the proposed method gives just approximate solutions, it is satisfactory for engineering practices, and the soluations become highly accurate for a small value of ωB/Vs. The results obtained by the proposed method are compared with those of other methods to evaluate the accuracy of the results. The effects of length/width ratio and the area of the contact plane of the foundations are also discussed.

    Notes: Field studies have shown that the driving of a displacement pile into cohesive soil generates large excess pore pressures in the vicinity of the pile. These pore pressures are often larger than the effective overburden pressure and facilitate the installation of the pile. The subsequent increase in bearing capacity of the pile is largely controlled by the dissipation of the excess pore pressures and a consequent increase in the effective stresses acting on the pile. The paper presents a closed formanalytical solution for the radial consolidation of the soil around a driven pile, assuming that the soil skeleton deforms elastically. This assumption is examined in the light of the predicted effective stress changes in the soil and is shown to lead to, a realistic model for the decay of pore pressure near the pile with time after driving. Although the solution may be applied to any initial distribution of excess pore pressure, attention is focussed on that due to the expansion of a cylindrical cavity in an ideal elastic, perfectly plastic soil. The resulting logarithmic variation of excess pore pressure with radius is considered to be close to that generated around a pile as a result of driving. In addition to giving estimates of the time needed for a driven pile to achieve its maximum strength, the solution may also be used in the analysis of pressuremeter tests to provide in-situ measurements of the coefficient of consolidation of the soil.
