    Description / Table of Contents: Packing paper, evolving a rust-protection atmosphereThe VPI- (Vapour Phase Inhibitor) process, evolved by the Shell group abroad, is described, which spares coatings or the greasing usual up to now, by applying a packing paper spread on the inside with an agent, that evolves a protective gas. The consumer so gets metallic materials which are immediately usuable. The peculiarities of handling are described as well as the applicability on the various metals and the infleuce on varnishes, fibrous materials and so on.
    Notes: Beschrieben wird das im Auslande von der Shellgruppe entwickelte VPI-(Vapour Phase Inhibitor = Korrosionsschutz durch Dampfphase) Verfahren, das die bisher üblichen Schutzüberzüge oder das Einfetten überflüssig macht durch Verwendung eines Packpapiers, das auf der Innenseite mit einem Schutzgas entwickelnden Wirkstoff bestrichen ist. Der Verbraucher erhält also sofort verwendungsfähige Metallteile. Die Besonderheiten der Handhabung werden beschrieben sowie auch die Anwendbarkeit auf die verschiedenen Metalle und die Einwirkungen auf Lacke, Faserstoffe usw.

The Fe/Al phases formed are particularly capable of reaction in the state of a possible lattice re-arrangement and in this state can no longer retard the diffusion.

    Description / Table of Contents: Experiments in the zinc-iron cellIn the model elements for oxygen concentration cells with iron electrodes - qualitatively indicated by U. R. Evans - interior resistance arise. When the surface (of the metal), which can be mechanically altered, is varied, these resistances cause a considerably variable loss of the metal at the cathode, which with well polished surfaces gives the value zero for each interior resistance of the cell, whereas the resistance can be increased by a mechanicl activation. In this report it is demonstrated that it is useful not to restrict, the conception “active surface” to a mechanical procedure of activation, but to include into this conception the state of activiy which can be influenced electrochemically. This electrochemically dependent change of the state of activity of a metal surface is due to the inhibitor effect of the electrone-receiver reacting at the cathode. This inhibitor effect is mainly dependent on the current density of the experimental cell. In order to obtain high current densities the zinc-iron cell was used. The electrone-receivers were ions of hydrogen and oxygen. In this publication hints are given for the cathodic protection of iron in practice, which correspond to the results found by F. Tödt and L. W. Haase. H. Fischer has already referred to the inhibitor effect of the discharged ion of hydrogen. The presence of “local calls with a direct passing of electrones” must again be presumed. Lately H. Grubitsch has also confirmed the reality of this electrone passing in the corrosion process at metal surfaces.
    Notes: Bei dem von U. R. Evans qualitativ angegebenen Modellelement für Sauerstoffkonzentrationsketten mit Eisenelektroden treten innere Widerstände auf, die bei Variation der mechanisch beeinflußbaren Oberflächenbeschaffenheit noch einen erheblich veränderlichen kathodischen Metallschwund in Erscheinung treten lassen, der bei gut geschliffenen Oberflächen für jeden inneren Widerstand des Elementes den Wert Null annimmt, während er durch mechanische Aktivierung größer als Null gemacht werden kann. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird gezeigt, daß es zeckmäßig ist, den Begriff „aktive Oberfläche“ nicht auf einen mechanischen Aktivierungsvorgang zu beschränken, sondern den elektrochemisch beeinflußbaren Aktivitätszustand einer Metalloberfläche in diesen Begriff einzubeziehen.Diese elektrochemisch bedingte Veränderung des Aktivitätszustandes einer Metalloberfläche wird durch die Inhibitowirkung des an der Kathode umgesetzten Elektronennehmers bewerkstelligt. Diese Inhibitorwirkung ist namentlich von der Dichte der Adsorptionsschicht abhängig und diese wieder von der Stromdichte in dem Versuchselement. Um relativ hohe Stromdichten zu erhalten, wurde mit dem Zink-Eisen-Element gearbeitet. Die Elektronennehmer waren Wasserstoffionen und Sauerstoff.Aus der vorliegenden Arbeit ergeben sich auch Hinweise für den kathodischen Schutz des Eisens in der Praxis, die mit den Ergebnissen in Übereinstimmung stehen, die bereits von F. Tödt und L. W. Haase erhalten wurden. Auf die Inhibitorwirkung des entladenen Wasserstoffions hat schon H. Fischer hingewiesen. Das Vorhandensein von „Lokalelementen mit direktem Elektronenübergang“ mußte wieder angenommen werden. Neuerdings hat auch H. Grubitsch die Realität dieser Elektronenübergänge bei dem Korrosionsvorgang auf Metalloberflächen bestätigt.

    Description / Table of Contents: Prevention of corrosion by metal-sprayingThe possibilities presenting themselves in the working phases: supply of metal, heating and spraying are critically discussed. A coefficient derived from the heat content of each metal influences the speed of supply in wire spraying apparatuses and the particle size of the metal in powder spraying apparatuses. The efficiency of powder spraying apparatuses is higher than that of wire spraying apparatuses. The first are used for nonmetallic materials, hard metals and partly for zinc. The oxygen content of the coating affects unfavourably the tensile strength, elongation and notch tenacity. Indifferent gas prevnets resp. reduces oxydation.Zinc coatings as protection agains corrosion have proved to be good and are often used where meals are expose to either air or water. Aluminium is also good in steam, hot water and in the food industry. Local coatings without teh employment of indifferent gases are porous. Corrosion trials are discussed which showed a decrease of resistance in the following order: 1. wire sprayd, 2. powder sprayed, 3. coatings prepared electrolytically or by dipping into molten zinc.
    Notes: Die Möglichkeiten, die sich bei den Arbeitsphasen: Stoffzuführung, Erwärmung und Zerstäubung ergeben, werden wertend besprochen. Eine aus dem Wärmeinhalt der Stoffe abgeleitete Kennzahl beeinflußt bei Drahtspritzgeräten Zuführungsgeschwindigkeit, bei Pulverspritzanalgen Korngröße des Spritzgutes. Die Leistung von Pulverspritzgeräten ist höher als die von Drahtspritzanlagen. Erstere werden angewandt bei nichmetallischen Stoffen, Hartmetallen und teilweise bei Zink. Der Oxydgehalt der Spritszchicht beeinflußt Zugfestigkeit, Dehnung und Kerbempfindlichkeit ungünstig. Schutzgas verhütet bzw. vermindert die Oxydation. Zinkspritzschichten als Korrosionsschutz haben sich gut bewährt und finden umfangreiche Anwendung bei atmosphärischer Beanspruchung und im Wasserbau. Aluminium führte sich befriedigend ein bei Wasserdampf, Heißwasser und in der Nahrungsmittelindustrie. Bleispritzschichten sind ohne Schutzgasanwendung porös. Es werden Korrosionsversuche besprochen, die eine Abnahme der Beständigkeit in der Reihenfolge: drahtgespritzte, pulvergespritzte, im Schmelzfluß und galvanisch aufgebrachte Schutzschichten ergaben.

    Description / Table of Contents: Latest developments in the field of elastic gaskets for moveable and removable machine partsSynthetic rubber gaskets made from perbunan can be used in the construction of chemical apparatures on account of their resistivity against a large number of corroding agents. The upper temperature limit is, however, at aprox. +110° C - 135° C for special mixtures. Silicon rubber increases the possibilities of temperature stressing up to +200° C resp. 250° C and is specially qualified for high-vacuum on account of its low steam pressur. For great mechanical stressing an additive polymerisate is available, which has stress properties twice as high than good rubber mixtures. Thiocol gaskets are resistant to swelling in aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons. Gaskets of polyisobutylenes and polyethylenes are suitable for highly corroding oxydizing acids.
    Notes: Kunstkautschukdichtungen auf Perbunanbasis sind auf Grund ihrer Widerstandsfähigkeit gegen eine große Anzahl aggressiver Medien im chemischen Apparatebau einsatzfähig. Die obere Temperaturgrenze liegt jedoch bei +100° C bis 135° C für Sondermischungen. Silikon kautschuk erweitert die Temperatur-beanspruchungsmöglichkeit bis +200° C bzw. 250° C und eignet sich wegen seines geringen Dampfdruckes besonders für Hochvakuum. Bei großer mechanischer Beanspruchung steht ein Additionspolymerisa zur Verfügung, das doppelt so hohe Festigkeitswerte besitzt als gute Kautschukmischungen. Thiokoldichtungen sind in aromatischen und chlorierten Kohlenwasserstoffen quellfest. Für hochaggressive oxydierende Säuren sind Dichtungen aus Polyisobutylenen und Polyäthylenen geeignet.

    Description / Table of Contents: Adhesive substances and materials of construcitonWith a view to the practical usage of adhesive substances in industry and handicraft the most essential physical and chemical powers active in the coming about of an adhesive coupling are discussed. It is found that for the achievement of the maximum effect a certain proportion between adhesion and cohesion is the preliminary condition both with the wet and the dry adherence. The adhesive powers arising with one and the same adhesive substance are dependent on the surface-nature of the construction material used, whereas the cohesive powers vary with the nature of the adhesive substance itself. Furthermore, several in special cases arising secondary powers are described which support for hamper these processes.After an enumeration and short definition of practically important types of adhesive substances and their field of usage it is examined which aspects should be decisive for the technic of processing in the plant. On the one side different construction materials can be coupled by oen and the same adhesive substance and on the other side the same fundamental type can be available in several forms ach of which is only suiable or one kind of working up.
    Notes: Unter dem Gesichtswinkel der praktischen Anwendung von Klebstoffen in Industrie und Handwerk werden die beim Zustandekommen einer Klebeverbindung wirksamen wesentlichsten physikalischen und chemischen Kräfte diskutiert. Hierbei ergibt sich, daß sowohl bei der nassen als auch bei der trockenen Haftung ein bestimmtes Größenverhältnis zwischen den Adhäsions- und Cohäsionskräften zur Erzielung der maximalen Wirkung Vorbedingung ist. Die auftretenden Adhäsionskräfte sind bei ein und demselben Klebstoff von der Oberflächenbeschaffenheit des zu verbindenden Werktoffes abhängig, während die Cohäsionskräfte mit der Art des Klebstoffes selbst wechseln. Weiter werden einige in speziellen Fällen auftretende untergeordnete Kräfte beschrieben, die diese Vorgänge unterstützen oder hemmen.Nach der Aufzählung und kurzen Definition der für die Praxis wichtigen Klebstofftypen mit ihren hauptsächlichsten Anwendungsgebieten wird untersucht, welche Gesichtspunkte für die betriebliche Verarbeitungstechnik entscheidend sind. Verschiedene Werkstoffe können einerseits durch denselben Klebstoff verbunden werden, andererseits kann der gleiche Grundtyp in mehreren Formen vorliegen, von denen jede einzelne nur für eine bestimmte Verarbeitungsart geeignet ist.

    Description / Table of Contents: Remarks on the determination of oxygen according to the tolidine-rhodanide-tolidine- and Winkler methodIt has been observed that the determination of oxygen in the water of condensation of high-pressure Power stations after the tolidine method- introduced by Crumb and Konny-yields too low values, if divalent iron is present in the water of condensation. This error is avoided by the tolidine-rhodanide method by converting into oxygen equivalents the quantity of bivalent iron, which during the execution of the tolidine method is passed into trivalent iron by the oxygen present, and by adding these quantities of oxygen to that found All quantities of oxygen brought into the water by addition of any chemicals are also taken into consideration. The presrnce of hydracine up to 150 y/l does not have any troublesome effects. The winkler Method may only be used with oxygen contents of at least 60 y/l. It then yields theoretical values.The tolidine-rhodanide method has lately also been used for calibration of the apparatus for the testing of oxygen which has been developped by Tödt (manufactures Hartmann & Braun Frankfurt/Main) and which continnously indicates the oxygen. This apparatus has been practically tested in the Berlin Power Station West. It indicated the oxygen within a range of 5 to 50 y/l with a deviation of ±1 y/l
    Notes: Es wurde beobachtet, daß die Bestimmung der Sauerstoffe in den Kondensaten der Hochdruckkraftwerke nach der von Crumb und Konny eingeführten Tolidin-Methode dann zu niedrige Werte ergibt, wenn in diesen Kondensaten zweiwertiges Eisen anwesend ist. Dieren Fehler vermeidet die Tolidin-Rhodanid-Methode, indem sie die Menge zweiwertiges Eisen, die im Verlaufe der Durchführung der Tolidin-Methode durch den anwesenden Sauerstoff in dreiwertiges Eisen übergeht, in Sauerstoffäquivalente umrechnet und diese Sauerstoffmengen zu dem nach der Tolidin-Methode gefundenen Sauerstoff addiert. Die durch die Chemikalienzugabe in das Probewasser hineingebrachten Sauerstoffmengen werden ebenfalls berücksichtigt, Die Anwesenheit von llydrazin bis 150 y/l wirkt nicht störendK. Wickert und H. Pilz, Jahrbuch vom Wasser 1951.. Die Winkler-Methode darf erst bei Sauerstoffgehalten ab 60 y/l angewandt werden. sie ergibt dann theoretische Werte.Die Tolidin-Rhodanid-Methode wurde neuerdings auch zur Eichung der von Tödt entwickelten Sauerstoffnachweißapparatur (Lieferant: Hartmann & Rraun, Frankfurt/Main) verwendet, die kontinuierlich und registrierend den Sauerstoff anzeigt. Praktisch wurde diese Apparatur im Berliner Kraftwerk West erprobt. Sie zeigte den Sauerstoff in dem Bereich von 5 bis 30 y/l mit einem Feb. ler von ±1 y/l anR. Freier, F. Tödt, K. Wickert, Chemie-Ingenieur-Technik (im Druck).

    Description / Table of Contents: Not-destructing crack-testing method, by means of radio-active indicatorsThe necessity of proving defects on installed equipments in a quick and easily evaluable manner revealed experiments on a test method by means of radioactiv isotopes. Supposition hereto is that the defects are lyig on a nearly plane surfac and easily within reach to hands. Particular advantages are the practicability of the method at not magnetic materials, e.g. austenic steels, and the distinct reproduction of the defects. By infiltrating the defects with alcoholic solutions of radioisotopes with small intensity by means of capillary action evaluable reproductions are obtained on apt radiant-sensible material in short times of exposure.Corrosion effects as destruciton of grain boundaries, tension crakcs by corrosion and finest cracks by corrosion fatigue have so been demonstrated graphically. Improvement of this method fo gaining larger application is possible.
    Notes: Die Notwendigkeit, Fehlerscheinungen an stark betriebsgebundenen Anlagen schnell und leicht auswertbar nachzuweisen, führte zu Versuchen über ein Prüfungsverfahren mittels radioaktiver Isotopen. Voraussetzung dazu sind nach außen offene, fast ebene und im Bereich der Hand liegende Fehlstellen. Besondere Vorteils sind die Anwendung des Verfahrens an nicht magnetischen Werkstoffen, z. B. austenitischen Stählen und eine deutliche Abbildung. Durch alkoholische Lösung von Radioisotopen geringer Intensität, die mittels Kapillarwirkung in Fehlstellen eingebracht werden, sind auf geeignetem strahlungsempfindlichem Material bei kurzen Belichtungszeiten auswertbare Abbildungen erzielbar.Korrosionserscheinungen wir Korngrenzenzerfall, Spannungskorrosionsrisse, sowie feinste Dauerbrauchanrisse sind bisher damit bildhaft nachgewiesen worden. Verbesserung der handhabung dieses Verfahrens über den geschilderten Versuchsbereich hinaus ist möglich. Zur Verwertung von Radioisotopen werden damit neue Anregungen gegeben.
