    Description: Some results of recent experimental investigations at supersonic and transonic speeds are presented to show the present status in the estimation of load distributions on controls and adjacent wing surfaces resulting from the deflection of flap controls and spoiler controls. The results indicate that the development of methods for predicting loads associated with controls has not kept pace with the acquisition of experimental data. At low supersonic speeds sweeping the hinge line induces strong three-dimensional-flow characteristics which cannot be treated by the simplified methods previously developed for controls without sweep. At transonic speeds the estimation of loads associated with controls must usually be dependent upon experimental information inasmuch as the latest attempts to predict chordwise and spanwise loadings have met with only limited success.

    Description: Boundary-layer-transition and heat-transfer measurements were obtained from flight tests of blunt and sharp cones having apex angles of 50 deg. The test Mach number range was from 1.7 to 4.7, corresponding to free-stream Reynolds numbers, based on cone base diameter, of 18. 3 x 10(exp 6) and 32.1 x 10(exp 6), respectively. Transition on both models occurred at a local Reynolds number of 1 x 10(exp 6) to 2 X 10(exp 6) based on distance from the stagnation point. Transition Reynolds numbers based on momentum thickness were between 320 and 380 for the blunt cone. The model surface roughness was 25 rms microinches or greater. Turbulent heat transfer to the conical surface of the blunt cone at a Mach number of 4 was 30 percent less than that to the surface of the sharp cone. Available theories predicted heat-transfer coefficients reasonably well for the fully laminar or turbulent flow conditions.

    Description: Skin temperatures and surface pressures have been measured on a slightly blunted cone-cylinder-flare configuration to a maximum Mach number of 9.89 with a rocket-propelled model. The cone had a t o t a l angle of 25 deg and the flare had a 10 deg half-angle. Temperature data were obtained at eight cone locations, four cylinder locations, and seven flare locations; pressures were measured at one cone location, one cylinder location, and three flare locations. Four stages of propulsion were utilized and a reentry type of trajectory was employed in which the high-speed portion of flight was obtained by firing the last two stages during the descent of the model from a peak altitude of 99,400 feet. The Reynolds number at peak Mach number was 1.2 x 10(exp 6) per foot of model length. The model length was 6.68 feet. During the higher speed portions of flight, temperature measurements along one element of the nose cone indicated that the boundary layer was probably laminar, whereas on the opposite side of the nose the measurements indicated transitional or turbulent flow. Temperature distributions along one meridian of the model showed the flare to have the highest temperatures and the cylinder generally to have the lowest. A maximum temperature of 970 F was measured on the cone element showing the transitional or turbulent flow; along the opposite side of the model, the maximum temperatures of the cone, cylinder, and flare were 545 F, 340 F, and 680 F, respectively, at the corresponding time.

    Description: The heat transfer and pressures on the surfaces of several flat-plate models with various external crosswise stiffener arrangements are presented. The tests were made in a free jet at Mach numbers of 0.77, 1.39, and 1.98 for Reynolds numbers of 3 x 10(exp 6), 7 x 10(exp 6), and 14 x 10(exp 6), respectively, based on a length of 1 foot. The addition of external crosswise stiffeners to the flat-plate models caused large pressure and heat-transfer variations on the surfaces of the models.

    Description: The literature on turbulent heat transfer has in the course of years attained a considerable volume. Since this very complicated problem has not as yet found a complete solution, further studies in this field may be expected. The heat engineer must therefore accomodate himself to a constantly increasing number of theories and formulas. Since the theories generally start from hypothetical assumptions, and since they contain true and false assertions, verified knowledge and pure suppositions often being intermingled in a manner difficult to tell them apart, the specialist had difficulty in forming a correct evaluation of the individual studies. The need therefore arises for a presentation of the problem of turbulent heat transfer which is not initially bound by hypothetical assumptions and in which uninvestigated can be clearly distinguished form each other. Such a presentation will be given in the present treatment. Brief remarks with regard to the development of the theory of local heat transfer are included.

    Description: Measurements of aerodynamic heat transfer have been made along the hemisphere and cylinder of a hemisphere-cylinder rocket-propelled model in free flight up to a Mach number of 3.88. The test Reynolds number based on free-stream condition and diameter of model covered a range from 2.69 x l0(exp 6) to 11.70 x 10(exp 6). Laminar, transitional, and turbulent heat-transfer coefficients were obtained. The laminar data along the body agreed with laminar theory for blunt bodies whereas the turbulent data along the cylinder were consistently lower than that predicted by the turbulent theory for a flat plate. Measurements of heat transfer at the stagnation point were, in general, lower than the theory for stagnation-point heat transfer. When the Reynolds number to the junction of the hemisphere-cylinder was greater than 6 x l0(exp 6), the transitional Reynolds number varied from 0.8 x l0(exp 6) to 3.0 x 10(exp 6); however, than 6 x l(exp 6) when the Reynolds number to the junction was less, than the transitional Reynolds number varied from 7.0 x l0(exp 6) to 24.7 x 10(exp 6).

The measurements were made in a Parr oxygen-bomb calorimeter, and the combustion was believed to be 98 percent complete. The estimated net-heat of combustion for complete combustion would therefore be 20,850 +/- 150 Btu per pound.

    Description: In dusty air flows occurring in industrial practice in transport by air pressure of friable materials, in the drying, annealing, and so forth, of a pulverized solid mass in suspension, and in other processes, the concentration of solid particles usually has a magnitude of the order of 1 kg per 1 kg of air. At such a concentration, the ratio of the volume of the particles to the volume of the air is small (less than one-thousandth part). However, regardless of this, the presence of a solid admixture manifests itself in the rules for the velocity distribution of the air in a dusty air flow. As a result, the rules of velocity change are different for clean and for dusty air flows. The estimation of the influence of the admixture on the velocity of the motion of the flow presents a definitive interest. One of the attempts to estimate that influence on the axial velocity of a free axially symmetrical jet with admixtures was made by Abramovich. Abramovich assumed beforehand that the fine particles of the admixture in the jet are subject to the motion of the air (that is, that the velocity of the admixture is approximately equal to the local velocity of the air); he then took as the basis of his considerations, in solving the problem, the condition that the amount of motion of the two-phase jet must be constant.

    Notes: Zunächst wird über Untersuchungen berichtet, bei denen Wärmeübergang, Druckabfall sowie die Temperatur- und Geschwindigkeitsverteilung im rauhen Rohr gemessen wurden. Die Ergebnisse konnten allgemeingültig dargestellt und theoretisch begründet werden. Ferner wird auf wirtschaftliche Fragen und den Einfluß von Schmutzschichten im Rohr auf den Wärmeübergang eingegangen. Bei Untersuchungen an einem linsenförmigen Rohr und außen beheizten Ringspalten stand die Frage nach dem maßgebenden gleichwertigen Durchmesser im Vordergrund. Weiterhin wurde der Wärmeübergang zwischen staubhaltiger Luft und einer Kugelschüttung gemessen; dabei war kein merklicher Einfluß des Staubgehaltes zu erkennen. Sehr eingehend wurde schließlich das Strömungsverhalten von Rieselfilmen untersucht. Die kritische Reynolds-Zahl konnte zu 400 bestimmt werden. Außerdem wurden die Höhe der Wellen, die Filmdicke und die Wandschubspannung gemessen, so daß auch das Widerstandsgesetz der welligen Filmströmung angegeben und eine Näherungstheorie für den Wärmeübergang aufgestellt werden konnte.

Im zweiten Teil wurden die Korrosionserscheinungen im System Metall/Lösung beschrieben. Während dort vor allem auf die Erscheinungen und Grundlagen der Primärreaktionen der Säurekorrosion eingegangen wurde, wird im vorliegenden abschließenden Bericht die Korrosion in neutralen Elektrolytlösungen behandelt.

    Notes: Die elektrostatische Aufladung von gereinigtem n-Heptan wurde in Abhängigkeit von Art und Menge verschiedener Zusätze (Alkohole, Peroxyde, Fettsäuren, Ester, Amine, Mercaptane, Silicone) gemessen. Der Aufladestrom war in dem Bereich von 10-18 bis 10-11Ω-1 cm-1 der Leitfähigkeit des Systems proportional. Die elektrostatische Aufladung technischer Kohlenwasserstoff-Fraktionen wurde im wesentlichen durch Oxvßationsprodukte hervorgerufen.

    Notes: Eine Schicht poröser Körner werde von einem Gas oder Gasgemisch durchströmt, das sich an dem Feststoff katalytisch in exothermer Reaktion umsetzt oder aber mit der Substanz der Körner selbst exotherm reagiert (z. B. Verbrennung von Koks). Bei adiabatischer Arbeitsweise nimmt die Temperatur mit steigendem Umsatz längs der Schicht entsprechend der Wärmebilanz stetig zu. Infolgedessen steigt auch die Geschwindigkeitskonstante der chemischen Reaktion längs der Schicht an, und es können daher bei stark exothermen Umsetzungen, die auch bei höheren Temperaturen noch einseitig verlaufen, die Transportvorgänge von Stoff und Wärme zwischen Gasstrom und Feststoffoberfläche maßgebenden Einfluß auf die Umsatzgeschwindigkeit gewinnen. In einem solchen Falle überhitzt sich die Körnerschicht gegenüber dem Gasstrom, und es bildet sich unter Umständen in der Schicht eine Temperaturstufe aus, die dem Gasstrom entgegen an den Schichtanfang zurückwandert (Zündvorgang). Ausschlaggebend für diese Erscheinungen ist die Bilanz zwischen Wärmeerzeugung und Wärmeabfuhr an der Feststoffoberfläche; eine wichtige Rolle spielen hierbei die Reaktionsfähigkeit des Feststoffes (Porosität und innere Oberfläche) und der Wärmetransport in Längsrichtung der Schicht. Die Bedeutung und Auswirkung dieser Einflüsse werden im einzelnen aufgezeigt.

    Notes: In der Verfahrenstechnik der kontinuierlichen Prozeßführung mit Suspensionen kann man zwei elementare Prozeßtypen unterscheiden. Der „Entmischungstyp“ ist durch lineare Kraftfelder, in denen Partikeln „sedimentieren“, gekennzeichnet. Seine charakteristische Maßgröße ist die „Flächenbelastung“, welche bei Anwendung des „Sedimentationsgleichgewichtes“ zur Berechnung des Trenneffektes dienen kann. Der „Reaktionstyp“ ist raumfüllend und wird durch die „mittlere Aufenthaltszeit“ als Maßgröße charakterisiert. Viele Prozesse der Praxis sind Überlagerungen beider Typen. Es wird eine Prozeß-Analyse zur Ermittlung von Berechnungsgrundlagen vorgeschlagen und die räumlich oder zeitlich getrennte Durchführung der Teilprozesse empfohlen. Dadurch läßt sich der Gesamtvorgang besser anpassen.

Das genaueste Verfahren, die numerische Mittelbildung, ist zeitraubend; die einfachen Verfahren der elektrischen Mittelbildung erzeugen einen zusätzlichen Meßfehler. Die Auswahl des Meßverfahrens wird daher von den Anforderungen abhängen, die im Einzelfall zu stellen sind.     Notes: Die Graphit-Anoden werden bei der technischen Chlorat-Herstellung vor allem durch Oxydation, weniger durch Schlammbildung abgenutzt. Es wurde die Lebensdauer verschiedener Graphit-Anoden durch Versuche im Betrieb und durch Laboratoriumsversuche unter betßriebsähnlichen Bedingungen ermittelt. Es zeigt sich, daß durch eine enge Verbindung von verfahrenstechnischem und konstruktivem Denken zweckmäßige Lösungen bestehender Probleme gefunden wurden.

    Notes: Die Bodenzahl einer Kolonne wird oft graphisch ermittelt. Vereinfachend werden meist die molaren Verdampfungswärmen für alle Komponenten gleich groß angenommen. Will man die Unterschiede in den Verdampfungswärmen, die bei scharfen Bedingungen einen erheblichen Einfluß auf die Bodenzahl haben können, berücksichtigen, so wird das zeichnerische Verfahren sehr kompliziert. Es wurde deshalb versucht, die Bodenzahl unmittelbar zu berechnen. Der Grundgedanke der Berechnung der Mindestbodenzahl (bei einem Rücklaufverhältnis v = ∞) führt auf elementarem Weg zu einer Lösung mit drei geometrisch anschaulichen Größen.

    Description / Table of Contents: On the Corrosion of Wine Bottle aps Made of Thinly Tinned Lead (Tinfoil Caps) and their TestingSeveral method have been developed for the testing of the thickness and porosity of the tin layers of the customary tinfoil caps. The tin layers of commercial wine bottles were found to be less than 0,001 mm and for a great part considerably porous.To test the resistance of the caps to corrosion, laboratory experiments and practical storage tests have been carried out with commercially capped bottles. Under certain conditions which might be met in practice the caps were corroded considerably, and in some cases they were deteriorated totally. The corrosion products are lead salts.
    Notes: Es wurden Verfahren für die Prüfung der Dicke und der Porigkeit der Zinnauflage auf den üblichen sogenannten “Stanniol” - Flaschenkapseln entwickelt. Kapseln von aus dem Handel bezogenen Weinflaschen waren fast stets unter 0,001 mm dick verzinnt und meist erheblich porig.Zur Prüfung der Korrosionsbeständigkeit der Kapseln wurden Laboratoriumsversuche mit Kapseln und praktische Lagerversuche mit handelsüblich verkapselten Flaschen ausgeführt. Unter gewissen Bedingungen, die in der Praxis durchaus vorkommen können, wurden die Kapseln unter Bildung von Bleisalzen erheblich korrodiert, in einigen Fällen sogar völlig zerfressen.

    Description / Table of Contents: On the Anodic behavior of copper zinc alloys in sodium cyanide solutions IThe solubility of alloyed metal anodes is conditioned by the potential of the most not noble constituent of the alloy and the solubility of te cover primary formed on the surface of this constituent. Zinc and brass could be passivated much more easily tan copper. Both the constituents of the alloy react indepently just loke the pure metals. α + β bras is more active and can not be passivated as easily as α-brass. There are only gradual differences between the corrosion processes as well as between the reactions of anodic solution or passivation. The two metals dissolve one after the other and get passivated iin a process consisting of two steps. The voltage of the alloy shows the existence of a small depolarizing effect of teh metals upon one another.
    Notes: Die Löslichkeit von Legierungsanoden wird durch das Potential des unedelsten Bestandteiles der Legierung und die Löslichkeit der sich auf diesem Bestandteil primär ausbildenden Deckschicht bestimmt. Zink und Messing ist leichter zu passivieren als Kupfer. Beide Bestandteile reagieren in der Legierung unabhängig voneinander ähnlich wie die reinen Metalle, α + β-Messing ist aktiver und daher schwerer zu passivieren als α-Messing. Zwischen den Korrosionserscheinungen sowie den Vorgängen bei der anodischen Auflösung oder Passivierung der Legierungsanode bestehen nur graduelle Unterschiede. die beiden Metalle geben nacheinander in Lösung und werden in zwei Stufenprozessen passiv. Die Potentiale der Legierung zeigen eine geringe depolarisierende Wirkung der beiden Einzelmetalle aufeinander.

    Description / Table of Contents: On an method for removal of boiler scaleThe solid incrustations in boilers etc. are removed usually by application of certain acids at those places of the devices where the incrustations have been formed. It is wellknown that the aggressive effect of the acids upon cleaned metal surfaces could be prevented by an addition of certain substances with inhibitive effect which will say that these substances decrease or even prevent acid attacks. The peper contains a report on the inhibitive effect of the „Brindi“-resin and some theoretical conclusions drawn from the experimental results.
    Notes: Feste Steinbildungen in Kesseln usw. werden in neuerer Zeit bekanntlich da-durch beseitigt, daß sie in den Anlagen, in denen sie sich gebildet haben, durch bestimmte Säuren gelöst wurden. Es ist auch bekannt, daß die aggressive Wirkung der Säuren auf die Metallflächen, die unter den Steinbildungen liegen, wenn letztere aufgelöst sind, dadurch verhütet wird, daß der Säure bestimmte Stoffe zugesetzt werden, die als Inhibitoren wirken, d. h. den Säureangriff verringern oder u. U. ganz verhüten. Im vorliegenden Aufsatz ist die diesbezügliche Wirkung des „Brindiharzes“ als Inhibitor laboratoriumstechnisch festgestellt und versucht worden, aus den Ergebnissen einige theoretische Folgerungen zu ziehen.

    Description / Table of Contents: Will lead colors become dispensable?Minium is a theoreically ideal protective pigment whose application may be entrusted without any danger even to little trained personnel. Protective covers are formed in the minimum film which prevent underrusting. Its electrochemical effect upon the metallic surface is independent of the chemical properties of the binder. Iron wash primers free from lead may be applied only under certain conditons. New directions confirm that lead colors are indispensable.
    Notes: Die Bleimennige ist ein „theoretisch ideales“ Schutzpigment, dessen anwendung man völlig gefahrlos auch weniger geschulten Hilfskräften überlassen kann.  -  In ihrem Film bilden sich Schutzschichten, die die Unterrostung verhindern.  -  Ihre elektrochemische Einwirkung auf den metallischen Untergrund ist von der chemischen Natur des Bindemittels unabhängig.  -  Bleifreie Eisengrundiermittel sind nur bedingt anwendbar.  -  Neue Betriebsvorschriften bestätigen die Unentbehrlichkeit der Bleifarben.
