    Notes: Abstract The vertical component obtained from the Global Positioning System (GPS) observations is from the ellipsoid (a mathematical surface), and therefore needs to be converted to the orthometric height, which is from the geoid (represented by the mean sea level). The common practice is to use existing bench marks (around the four corners of a project area and interpolate for the rest of the area), but in many areas bench marks may not be available, in which case an existing geoid undulation is used. Present available global geoid undulation values are not generally as detailed as needed, and in many areas they are not known better than ±1 to ±5 m, because of many limitations. This article explains the difficulties encountered in obtaining precise geoid undulation with some example computations, and proposes a technique of applying corrections to the best available global geoid undulations using detailed free-air gravity anomalies (within a 2° × 2° area) to get relative centimeter accuracy. Several test computations have been performed to decide the optimal block sizes and the effective spherical distances to compute the regional and the local effects of gravity anomalies on geoid undulations by using the Stokes integral. In one test computation a 2° × 2° area was subdivided into smaller surface elements. A difference of 37.34 ± 1.6 cm in geoid undulation was obtained over the same 2° × 2° area when 1° × 1° block sizes were replaced by a combination of 5' × 5' and 1' × 1' subdivision integration elements (block sizes).

    Notes: Asset location systems, including vehicle and property tracking systems, are in the verge of exploding onto the scene for widespread business and personal use. This is due in part to decreased costs of GPS equipment, and greater availability of wireless communication systems, but also largely due to public awareness of their capabilities and benefits. Companies, organizations, and individual consumers that earlier could not justify the costs of tracking systems are now seriously considering their implementation. Public awareness of such systems is growing daily. Newspapers regularly have articles covering the latest applications of GPS. En route nagivation for aircraft, assisting blind people to navigate the streets of a city, and tracking skiers on slopes are some of the topics of recent newspapers articles on GPS. This article explores GPS asset location systems, looks at their features and foibles, and considers their cost, utility, ease of use, and drawbacks.

    Notes: Executive Summary GPS is a scientific method used as an adjunct to geographic information systems (GIS) for determining high-accuracy control points over large areas. Recent improvements in receiver technology, differential surveying, and software have made use of GPS technology more practical for smaller GIS projects. This article compares three different GPSs with occupation times of 2 and 12 min using an existing control network, comparing the location of the points and the distances between points. The control network internal distances vary from 40 to 280 m, and within 2000 m of the nearest second-order National Geodetic Survey (NGS) triangulation station. The partnership of GPS and GIS will lead to higher surveying integrity while improving digital mapping on the ground over small and large areas. It also allows for postsurvey analysis with solutions coming from multiple base stations. Presented here is a case study of how to achieve highly accurate and effective control points using using GPS/GIS, particularly for a small area.

    Notes: The NAVSTAR Global Positioning System is a space-based, all-weather, worldwide satellite navigation system. GPS uses the constellation of satellites and associated ground equipment to perform the primary missions of highly accurate navigation, time transfer, and nuclear detonation detection. To achieve these missions, GPS has three clearly defined segments – space, user and control (see Figure 1). The control segment, otherwise referred to as the operational control segment (OCS), consists of the personnel and equipment that controls the space segment and interfaces with the user segment. The OCS is made up of the master control station (MCS), the ground antennas (GA), and the monitor stations (MS). The purpose of this article is to describe how the 2nd Space Operations Squadron runs the MCS, the key element of the OCS.

    Notes: Abstract The extensive use of groundwater resources has increased the need for developing cost-effective monitoring networks to provide an indication of the degree to which the subsurface environment has been affected by human activities. This study presents a cost-effective approach to the design of groundwater flow monitoring networks. The groundwater network design is formulated with two problem formats: maximizing the statistical monitoring power for specified budget constraint and minimizing monitoring cost for statistical power requirement. The statistical monitoring power constraint is introduced with an information reliability threshold value. A branch and bound technique is employed to select the optimal solution from a discrete set of possible network alternatives. The method is tested to the design of groundwater flow monitoring problem in the Pomona County, California.

    Notes: Abstract Two stochastic models are developed to describe the BOD output (i.e. effluent) variation of facultative aerated lagoons in series. One of the models uses the uncertainty analysis (UA) technique and the other is based on the moment equation solution methodology of stochastic differential equations (SDE's). The former considers a second-order approximation of the expectation (SOAE) and a first-order approximation of the variance (FOAV). The SDE model considers that output variability is accounted for by random variations in the rate coefficient. Comparisons are provided. Calibration and verification of the two models are aciieved by using field observations from two different lagoon systems in series. The predictive performances of the two models are compared with each other and with another SDE model, presented in a previous paper, that considers input randomness. The three methods show similar predictive performances and provide good predictions of the mean and standard deviation of the lagoon effluent BOD concentrations and thus are considered as appropriate methodologies.

    Notes: Abstract Quantile estimates of the annual maximum distribution can be obtained by fitting theoretical distributions to the maxima in separate seasons, e.g. to the monthly maxima. In this paper, asymptotic expressions for the bias and the variance of such estimates are derived for the case that the seasonal maxima follow a Gumbel distribution. Results from these expressions are presented for a situation with no seasonal variation and for maximum precipitation depths at Uccle/Ukkel (Belgium). It is shown that the bias is often negligible and that the variance reduction by using seasonal maxima instead of just the annual maxima strongly depends on the seasonal variation in the data. A comparison is made between the asymptotic standard error of quantile estimates from monthlymaxima with those from a partial duration series. Much attention is paid to the effect of model misspecification on the resulting quantile estimates of the annual maximum distribution. The use of seasonal maxima should be viewed with caution when the upper tail of this distribution is of interest.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper a parameter estimation algorithm is developed to estimate uncertain parameters in two dimensional shallow water flow models. Since in practice the open boundary conditions of these models are usually not known accurately, the uncertainty of these boundary conditions has to be taken into account to prevent that boundary errors are interpreted by the estimation procedure as parameter fluctuations. Therefore the open boundary conditions are embedded into a stochastic environment and a constant gain extended Kalman filter is employed to identify the state of the system. Defining a error functional that measures the differences between the filtered state of the system and the measurements, a quasi Newton method is employed to determine the minimum of this functional. To reduce the computational burden, the gradient of the criterium that is required using the quasi Newton method is determined by solving the adjoint system.

    Notes: Abstract This paper presents the mathematical development of an integer — nonlinear programming chance — constrained optimization model for the minimum cost rehabilitation/replacement of water distribution system components. Particular attention is given to the handling of uncertainties in the roughness factors and the loading conditions including both the random demand and preassure head requirements. The advantages of the proposed model include the ability to: 1) handle the optimal timing of rehabilitation/replacement for water distribution system components; 2) link a mixed-integer linear program solver, a nonlinear program solver, and a hydraulic simulator into an optimization framework; 3) handle the uncertainties of some of the variables; 4) incorporate various kinds of cost functions; and 5) handle multiple loading conditions.

    Notes: Abstract Entropy based expressions for measurement of reliability and redundancy have recently been reported. These measures approach assessment of the reliability of the distribution network from the intrinsic redundancy of the network layout. The paper extends earlier work on entropy functions by including a more explicit statement of the alternate paths available in the network and by recognizing that under certain circumstances, e.g., failure of some part of the network work, an outflow link from a node under normal working condition may become an inflow link to the same node. The measures are assessed by comparison with parameters measuring Nodal Pair Reliability and percentage of flow supplied at adequate pressure for a range of networks and link failure conditions in this networks. The entropy measures are shown to reflect changes in the network reliability, as measured by these two comparative parameters, very well.

    Notes: Abstract Many stochastic process models for environmental data sets assume a process of relatively simple structure which is in some sense partially observed. That is, there is an underlying process (Xn, n ≥ 0) or (Xt, t ≥ 0) for which the parameters are of interest and physically meaningful, and an observable process (Yn, n ≥ 0) or (Yt, t ≥ 0) which depends on the X process but not otherwise on those parameters. Examples are wide ranging: the Y process may be the X process with missing observations; the Y process may be the X process observed with a noise component; the X process might constitute a random environment for the Y process, as with hidden Markov models; the Y process might be a lower dimensional function or reduction of the X process. In principle, maximum likelihood estimation for the X process parameters can be carried out by some form of the EM algorithm applied to the Y process data. In the paper we review some current methods for exact and approximate maximum likelihood estimation. We illustrate some of the issues by considering how to estimate the parameters of a stochastic Nash cascade model for runoff. In the case of k reservoirs, the outputs of these reservoirs form a k dimensional vector Markov process, of which only the kth coordinate process is observed, usually at a discrete sample of time points.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, concepts of network thermodynamics are applied to a river water quality model, which is based on Streeter-Phelps equations, to identify the corresponding physical components and their topology. Then, the randomness in the parameters, input coefficients and initial conditions are modeled by Gaussian white noises. From the stochastic components of the physical system description of problem and concepts of physical system theory, a set of stochastic differential equations can be automatically generated in a computer and the recent developments on the automatic formulation of the moment equations based on Ito calculus can be used. This procedure is illustrated through the solution of an example of stochastic river water quality problem and it is also shown how other related problems with different configurations can be automatically solved in a computer using just one software.

    Notes: Abstract Current methods of estimation of the univariate spectral density are reviewed and some improvements are made. It is suggested that spectral analysis may perhaps be best thought of as another exploratory data analysis (EDA) tool which complements, rather than competes with, the popular ARMA model building approach. A new diagnostic check for ARMA model adequacy based on the nonparametric spectral density is introduced. Additionally, two new algorithms for fast computation of the autoregressive spectral density function are presented. For improving interpretation of results, a new style of plotting the spectral density function is suggested. Exploratory spectral analyses of a number of hydrological time series are performed and some interesting periodicities are suggested for further investigation. The application of spectral analysis to determine the possible existence of long memory in natural time series is discussed with respect to long riverflow, treering and mud varve series. Moreover, a comparison of the estimated spectral densities suggests the ARMA models fitted previously to these datasets adequately describe the low frequency component. Finally, the software and data used in this paper are available by anonymous ftp from fisher.stats.uwo.ca.

    Notes: Abstract The computational aspects of using a new, entropy-based, theory to predict water quality values at discontinued water quality monitoring stations are discussed. The main computational issues addressed are the level of discretization used in converting the continuous probability distribution of water quality values to the discrete levels required for the entropy function, and the choice of the interval of time for which to assign the value of the water quality (period of time averaging) through the entropy function. Unlike most cases of entropy applications involving discretization of continuous functions the results of using entropy theory to predict water quality values at discontinued monitoring stations in this application appear to be insensitive to the choice of the level of discretization even down to the very coarse level discretization associated with only eight intervals. However, depending on the length of record available the choice of the time interval for which the water quality values are assigned (period for time averaging) appear to have a significant impact on the accuracy of the results.

The calibration of groundwater models, the inverse problem, has lately received comparable attention especially and almost exclusively from the stochastic perspective. In this review we trace the evolution of the methods to date with a specific view toward identifying the most important issues involved in the usefulness of the approaches. The methods are critiqued regarding practical usefulness, and future directions for requisite study are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper Lindley's Bayesian approximation procedure is used to obtain the Bayes estimate of the probability of exceedence of a flood discharge. The Bayes estimates of the probability of exceedence has been shown by S.K. Sinha to be equivalent to the estimate of the probability of exceedence from the predictive or Bayesian disribution, of a future flood discharge. The evaluation of complex ratios of multiple integrals common in a Bayesian analysis is not necessary using Lindley's procedure. The Bayes estimates are compared to those obtained by the method of maximum likelihood and the method of moments. The results show that Bayes estimates of the probability of exceedence are larger as expected, but have smaller posterior standard deviations.

    Notes: Abstract Using the state space approach, an on-line filter procedure for combined wind stress identification and tidal flow forecasting is developed. The stochastic dynamic approach is based on the linear twodimensional shallow water equations. Using a finite difference scheme, a system representation of the model is obtained. To account for uncertainties, the system is embedded into a stochastic environment. By employing a Kalman filter, the on-line measurements of the water-level available can be used to identify and predict the shallow water flow. Because it takes a certain time before a fluctuation in the wind stress can be noticed in the water-level measurements, an optimal fixed-lag smoother is used to identify the stress.

    Notes: Abstract A computational method for the determination of rainfall distribution for applications in short term rainfall prediction is presented here. The method is strongly influenced by the experience gained from the observation and analysis of data gathered on a heavy rainfall event in 1986 that occurred during the Baiu Season in Japan. The method is based on the concept that rainfall occurs as an interaction between an instability field, appropriately modeled, and a field of water vapor under the influence of topography. The results from this computational method showed good agreement with the temporal variation in the rainband that moved across the observation field in 1986. Towards determination of the parameters in the computational model, another method for the determination of the rainfield is also developed. This second method determines the rainfall distribution from estimation of the conversion rate of water vapor to liquid water through use of data from a three dimensional scanning radar. The results are consistent with those obtained from the first method.

    Notes: Abstract Recognizing that simple watershed conceptual models such as the Nash cascade ofn equal linear reservoirs continue to be reasonable means to approximate the Instantaneous Unit Hydrograph (IUH), it is natural to accept that random errors generated by climatological variability of data used in fitting an imprecise conceptual model will produce an IUH which is random itself. It is desirable to define the random properties of the IUH in a watershed in order to have a more realistic hydrologic application of this important function. Since in this case the IUH results from a series of differential equations where one or more of the uncertain parameters is treated in stochastic terms, then the statistical properties of the IUH are best described by the solution of the corresponding Stochastic Differential Equations (SDE's). This article attempts to present a methodology to derive the IUH in a small watershed by combining a classical conceptual model with the theory of SDE's. The procedure is illustrated with the application to the Middle Thames River, Ontario, Canada, and the model is verified by the comparison of the simulated statistical measures of the IUH with the corresponding observed ones with good agreement.

    Notes: Abstract Distributed parameter filtering theory is employed for estimating the state variables and associated error covariances of a dynamical distributed system under highly random tidal and meteorological influences. The stochastic-deterministic mathematical model of the physical system under study consists of the shallow water equations described by the momentum and continuity equations in which the external forces such as Coriolis force, wind friction, and atmospheric pressure are considered. White Gaussian noises in the system and measurement equations are used to account for the inherent stochasticity of the system. By using an optimal distributed parameter filter, the information provided by the stochastic dynamical model and the noisy measurements taken from the actual system are combined to obtain an optimal estimate of the state of the system, which in turn is used as the initial condition for the prediction procedure. The approach followed here has numerical approximation carried out at the end, which means that the numerical discretization is performed in the filtering equations, and not in the equations modelling the system. Therefore, the continuous distributed nature of the original system is maintained as long as possible and the propagation of modelling errors in the problem is minimized. The appropriateness of the distributed parameter filter is demonstrated in an application involving the prediction of storm surges in the North Sea. The results confirm excellent filter performance with considerable improvement with respect to the deterministic prediction.

    Notes: Abstract Based on the Partial Duration Series model a regional Bayesian approach is introduced in the modelling of extreme rainfalls from a country-wide system of recording raingauges in Denmark. The application of the Bayesian principles is derived in case of both exponential and generalized Pareto-distributed exceedances. The method is applied to, respectively, the total precipitation depth and the maximum 10 minutes rain intensity of individual storms from 41 stations. By means of the regional analysis prior distributions of the parameters in the Partial Duration Series model are estimated. It is shown that the regional approach significantly reduces the uncertainty of the T-year event estimator compared to estimation based solely on at-site data. In addition, the regional approach provides quantile estimates at non-monitored sites.

    Notes: Abstract Data fusion is the integration and analysis of data from multiple sensors to develop a more accurate understanding of a situation and determine how to respond to it. Although data fusion can be applied in many situations, this paper focuses on its application to manufacturing and how it changes some of the more traditional, less adaptive information models that support the design and manufacturing functions. The paper consists of four parts. The first section explains what data fusion is and its impact on manufacturing. The second section describes what an information system architecture is and explains the natural language-based information modeling methodology used by this research project. The third section identifies the major design and manufacturing functions, reviews the information models required to support them, and then shows how these models must be extended to support data fusion. The fourth section discusses the future directions of this work.

    Notes: Abstract This paper identifies requirements for an engineering design information management system. Future CAD systems must support a wide range of activities — such as definition, manipulation and analyses of complex product information models. These models represent not only conventional data associated with current CAD applications, but also design information characterizing the correlations between the requirements, functions, behaviors and physical form of the product. Such functionality is important for both the individual designer and the design organization, as the need to manage information as a corporate asset is becoming a critical component of business strategy. This paper explores these needs using two design studies. The first study illustrates some major concepts relative to non-routine design activities, while the second study focuses on the routine design activities relative to organization interactions. These studies were used to elicit high level requirements which serve as the basis for the development of prototype software systems. These prototypes are briefly introduced here.

    Notes: Abstract Object-oriented principles have introduced several useful concepts for developing complex software systems. As a result, several methodologies have been suggested for the overall design of software systems based on these concepts. Methodologies and frameworks for designing objects that are to be part of the software systems are currently lacking. This paper proposes anobject design framework andmethodology, which utilizes the object-oriented concepts, for planning, organizing and designing structural engineering design objects. Design objects in an integrated structural engineering system are complex and often related to each other in various different ways. The paper also identifies several important relationships among structural engineering design objects. These relationships serve as communication channels through wich design objects send messages to and receive responses from each other. Several examples, drawn from reinforced concrete structures, will be presented to demonstrate the object design methodology and to illustrate how the framework is effective in reducing the complexity of design objects in an integrated structural engineering system.

    Notes: Abstract This paper concerns several analytical problems related to linear polyhedra in euclidean three-dimensional-space. Symbolic formulas for line, surface, and volume integration are given, and it is shown that domain integrals are computable in polynomial time. In particular, it is shown that mass, first and second moments, and products of inertia are computable inO(E) time, whereE is the number of edges of the boundary. Simple symbolic expressions for the normal derivatives of domain integrals are also derived. In particular, it is shown that they are closely linked to the topology of the integration domain, as well as that they are expressible as combinations of domain integrals over lower-order domains (faces, edges, and vertices). The symbolic results presented in this paper may lead to an easy incorporation of integral constraints, for example, concerning mass and inertia, in the engineering designing process of solid objects.

In structural engineering design we deal with large sets of independent but interrelated objects. These objects are specified by data. For an engineering design data base the system must be able to model the objects composing the design as well as to manage effectively the design data. The data base management system therefore needs to have some knowledge of the intended use of the data, and must provide an abstraction mechanism to represent and manipulate objects. Much recent research in engineering data bases focuses on object management for specific tasks but gives little attention to the shareability of the underlying information. This paper describes an architecture for the management of complex engineering objects in a sharable, relational framework. Potential application of this approach to object management for structural engineering analysis and design is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Current solid modeling systems are suitable for modeling individual mechanical parts but they do not capture therelationships and/ordependencies among the geometric features of parts in an assembly. Research in the area of “part and assembly modeling” focuses on capturing this missing information. This paper surveys feature-based models for mechanical assemblies and methods for deriving the actual part positions from the part relationships. We have attempted to extract from the literature the essential requirements for a unified feature-based assembly model. Three levels of representation are envisaged—representation of part positions in terms of their spatial coordinates, representation of geometric (feature) relations between individual parts, and representation of the assembly hierarchy. The actual relative positions can be derived from the hierarchical assembly model. Possible areas of application are tolerance analysis and synthesis, automatic generation of assembly sequences, and kinematic analysis and synthesis.

    Notes: Abstract A scheme of representing assemblies and an algorithm for the tolerance chain generation are developed so that tolerance chains of assemblies can be generated automatically to accommodate tolerance analysis at the assembly level. In the hierarchical data structure representing an assembly the connectivity information is carried by the instances of components and subassemblies, and the mating relations between each pair of mating entities are described by mating links, mating paths, mating conditions, and mating features. Mating graphs are derived from the mating links before they are searched for the generation of tolerance chains. The scheme has been implemented in a prototype interactive package that allows the user to model assemblies directly without detailed object modeling. Several examples of various complexity have been tested with success.

    Notes: Abstract A programming method that facilitates interworkstation communications on a local area network (LAN) of microcomputers has been developed. Communications are managed using a set of common access status and data files, which are writen to and read from the file server hard disk. Use of this programming method permits the work load associated with large computational problems to be distributed to various workstations connected to a LAN for concurrent processing, and has resulted in substantial solution time savings in problems that have been run. Test problems have been programmed in IBM Compiled BASIC [1] and are continuing with further programs in BASIC and IBM Professional FORTRAN [2]. Applications to actual computational engineering problems are presently being investigated and are briefly discussed. This paper describes the basic principles underlying the distributed processing technique that was developed and presents several example problems that were run to test the technique and develop benchmark results for a particular LAN configuration.

    Notes: Abstract Many descriptions of the design process do not include the specifications as part of the process, but rather as an input to the design. Once the specifications are considered to be the input, the assumption is made that they are in a form that is suitable for the design process to proceed. The need for a design always starts with ill-defined objectives. The process by which this information is transformed into well-defined design objectives is called the design specification extraction process. An attempt to expose the underlying structure of the first step in the design process—the design specifications—is presented in this paper. The extraction of specifications is divided into four major tasks—diagnosis or information gathering, interpretation and assessment, classification and decomposition, and information patching. The conceptual framework for the design specification extraction and synthesis is implemented in the expert system program SEISD (specification extraction interface for structural design) developed in the LISP programming language. A few examples are presented to demonstrate the implementation strategies. These examples are drawn from the specific problem of a beam design.

    Notes: Abstract Acid etching is regarded as one of the main means of providing additional retention in aesthetic dentistry. Alternative methods of achieving bonding to tooth tissue which have been proposed include laser etching. Conflicting results on bond strength to enamel have been reported for laser etching. Here the tensile bond strength of composite resin to acid- and laser-etched enamel was measured and the topographical differences between the surfaces were evaluated using the scanning electron microscope. The laser used was a pulsed Nd-YAG laser at 10 pulses per second with a pulse length of 150μs, 80mJ pulse−1, 1.064μm wavelength. The results obtained indicate that the bond strength of laser-etched enamel was significantly lower than that of acid-etched enamel. In this study the difference may be attributable to the chromophore used. Variations in the rate of traverse of the laser tip across the surface did not appear to produce significant alterations in the bond strength.

    Notes: Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate how acidosis affects the sensitivity of F9 embryonal carcinoma cells to conventionally induced hyperthermia and Nd-YAG laser-induced laserthermia. Nigericin, a polyether ionophore, was used to reduce the intracellular pH to 6.8, while the control cells were maintained at a physiological pH of 7.4. Acidosis increased the heat sensitivity significantly. After the water bath only 75% of the acidotic F9S1 cells were viable, whereas all of the control cells at pH 7.4 survived. When the laser was used, the difference was even more pronounced. Only 9% of the acidotic cells were viable after a 2-min treatment and 0.2% after a 4-min treatment. At physiological pH a 2-min treatment left 41% of the cells viable and a 4-min treatment 2%. This study showed that laserthermia is significantly more effective in killing cells with low intracellular pH than it is in killing cells with normal intracellular pH. The core of a tumour is often acidotic and thus radioresistant. It is suggested that laserthermia could be a good choice when treating acidotic radioresistant cancer cells, and its effect as an adjuvant to radiation therapy should be investigated.

    Notes: Abstract Diode lasers are now capable of delivering up to 60 W of power down thin optical fibres, and their medical applications have increased considerably over the past 5 years. Most of the recent experimental and clinical work has been performed using the 805 nm diode laser wavelength, which is more heavily absorbed and is less penetrating than the 1064 nm Nd-YAG wavelength in most tissues. In contact and non-contact mode, the overall tissue effects from the diode laser are similar to the Nd-YAG laser, but with interstitial therapy the 805 nm wavelength produces significantly greater necrosis than the 1064 nm wavelength. Experimental work has established the effectiveness of the diode laser and clinical work has confirmed its suitability for a wide variety of procedures. Diode lasers have the major advantages of being small, compact, portable, efficient, easy to use and virtually maintenance free; they are likely to replace more cumbersome lasers for many medical applications.

    Notes: Abstract This paper reports the electron microscopy results obtained from two patients who were treated with 5 W of yellow (578 nm) light from a copper vapour laser with an illumination time of 3.6 ms and a 0.3 mm spot diameter. The endpoint of treatment was transient blanching. Following treatment, erythema was observed. There was minimal damage to the epidermis and non-vascular tissue such as the nerve fibres. There was severe damage to the endothelial cells of the ectatic vessels. Twenty-four hours after treatment, platelet activation and collagen were present, indicating that these vessels were no longer viable. Theoretical calculations are used to determine the flow of heat within and away from a 50μm diameter vessel. From this, heating of the entire vessel is shown to occur with illumination times of 4 ms, with minimal heating of the non-vascular tissue. Shorter illuminations do not heat the entire vessel, while the use of longer illumination times will cause excessive damage to the surrounding non-vascular tissue. Illumination times close to 4 ms must be regarded as optimal.

    Notes: Abstract Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has the potential to treat early carcinomas of the oral cavity and larynx while preserving normal tissue. However, normal tissues retain the photosensitizing agents and may be activated by high light fluence and dose rates resulting in normal tissue necrosis. The effects of varying dose rates of light delivery on various tissues in the upper aerodigestive tract have not been evaluated to date and are necessary to determine a ‘therapeutic light dose range’ that will result in selective tumour necrosis. Thirty adult mongrel dogs received intravenous Photofrin, 2 mg kg−1, 48 h prior to PDT treatment. Photodynamic therapy was administered to the tongue, buccal mucosa and larynx with a microlens fibre and implantable cylindrical diffuser at various dose rates from 20 to 125 J cm−2 at 150 mW cm−2. At the same dose rate of light delivery, the tongue was the most sensitive organ, followed by the buccal mucosa, and last by the larynx. The differential tissue effect of identical dose rates of therapy must be taken into account when administering PDT so that selective tumour necrosis with normal tissue preservation may be achieved. This study indicates the need to perform evaluations of the effect of PDT on other tissue types in an animal model with each new photosensitizer prior to administering PDT to those areas in humans.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of low-intensity near-infra-red laser irradiation (820 nm; 1.5 and 9.0 J cm−2; pulsed at 12 Hz, 73 Hz and 5 kHz) upon peripheral neurophysiology and skin temperature were investigated using antidromic conduction studies in the human median nerve in vivo. Healthy human volunteers (n = 90) were recruited and allocated randomly to either a control group (n=10) or one of eight experimental groups (two radiant exposures, 1.5 J cm−2 and 9.0 J cm−2 at one of three pulse repetition rates, 12 Hz, 73 Hz or 5 kHz, in addition to a placebo group for each radiant exposure;n = 10 all groups). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) demonstrated a significant (p≤0.05) decrease in skin temperature following irradiation at the lowest radiant exposure (1.5 J cm−2) combined with pulse repetition rates of 73 Hz and 5 kHz, with the greatest effect at 73 Hz. These changes in skin temperature were coupled with increases in negative peak latency (NPL); ie changes in NPL were inversely related to changes in skin temperature. However, in contrast to the authors' previous findings using continuous wave (CW) laser irradiation, differences in NPL were not found to be significant. These findings, therefore, provide little evidence of the neuro-physiological effects of low-intensity infra-red irradiation at the dosage levels and pulse repetition rates used here.

    Notes: Abstract The present study was conducted to assess the feasibility of laser Doppler velocimetry in young infants, as a prelude to ultimately undertaking such measurements in premature infants. A portable, unidirectional laser Doppler velocimeter was developed based on a Kowa RC-2 hand-held fundus camera. Six infants between 1 and 21 weeks of age were studied. Relative red blood cell velocity (δfmax) at the centre of retinal arteries was measured over approximately 10 heart cycles. A pulsatility parameter (P=1−δfmax.dia/δfmax.sys), a summary index of vascular status, was determined from the average diastolic and systolic values of δfmax. Velocity waveforms were obtained in four of the six infants. Arterial pulsatility for the group was 0.63±0.13. Precise non-invasive measurement of arterial red blood cell velocity waveforms in young infants was achieved. The high signal-to-noise ratio and temporal resolution of this data suggest that relative measurements of retinal blood flow may permit assessment of haemodynamic changes in premature infants.

    Notes: Abstract A questionnaire was sent to 242 patients who had undergone treatment with yellow light (578 nm) from a copper vapour laser for a port wine stain (PWS), for facial telangiectasia (FT), or for a spider naevus (SN). The questionnaire covered the social implications of the lesion, the physical appearance of the lesion after treatment and the patient's judgement of how the treatment has affected them. Replies were received from 73% of the patients. The replies revealed that 83% PWS, 74% FT, and 81% SN patients felt there had been an improvement in their appearance compared with 2.5% PWS, 14% FT, and 7.5% SN patients who felt that their appearance had changed for the worse. The overall impression of the treatment was also very positive, especially with PWS patients, 91% would recommend the treatment to others, 84% would have the treatment again and 60% indicated their feelings regarding their overall treatment and the effect it had on their lives was very good.

    Notes: Abstract Biliary, urinary and salivary stones were fragmented in vitro with a flashlamp-pumped dye laser operating at 504 nm. A clinical fragmentation criterion was formulated; fragmentation was continued until all fragments had passed through a sieve with holes of 1.5×1.5 mm2. The number of shots of 50 mJ necessary for total fragmentation appeared to be proportional to the stone mass. The three types of stones showed statistically significant differences in the number of shots per unit mass, necessary for fragmentation. On biliary calculi we investigated the influence of the energy per laser pulse. For pulse energies of 32 mJ and larger, the energy necessary for fragmentation appeared to be proportional to the initial stone mass, but did not depend on the energy per pulse.

    Notes: Abstract The rationale of hyperthermic treatment of tumours is based on the phenomenon that several tumours have a reduced tolerance for exposure to temperatures in the region 42–47 °C for 20–30 min. Hyperthermia may also be used as an adjunct to other modalities such as chemotherapy, conventional radiation therapy or photodynamic therapy. Methods for introducing hyperthermia include electromagnetic radiation in the radiofrequency and microwave region as well as ultrasonic waves. The use of lasers emitting within the visible and near infrared part of the spectrum has the potential to initiate a local elevation of the temperature. The extension of the heated region will depend on optical wavelength, tissue composition and blood perfusion. Typical linear dimensions of the 42–47 °C temperature region will range from 2–3 mm and up to about 10 mm. Superficial tumours may be heated by direct irradiation whereas deeper lying tumours or lesions of large extent may require light delivered by one or several inserted optical fibres. Laser-induced hyperthermia may be of particular relevance in the treatment of retinal or choroidal tumours. Visible and near infrared radiation can be transmitted through the cornea, the lens and the vitreous with negligible loss. The absorption in the tumour is, however, significantly larger and the main part of the optical power will be absorbed within 0.5–5 mm into the neoplastic tissue. This paper emphasizes a discussion of the basic principles.

    Notes: Abstract Most methods of modern laser tumour therapy are physically based on the conversion of light to heat. Recently tumours have also been treated using ionizing processes for tissue ablation. Photodynamic laser therapy (PDT), however, involves light-induced non-thermal biochemical processes and the use of a photosensitizer. Several drugs are known to be stored selectively in tumours after systemic application. This transient marking can be used for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The marker most commonly used is dihaematoporphyrin ether/ester (DHE) intravenously injected at doses of 0.2–3.0 mg/kg bodyweight for diagnosis and therapy, respectively. The corresponding clearance intervals after injection of DHE range from 3–48 h to 25–75 h. Detection of photosensitized tumours might offer great advantages. The highly sensitive two-wavelength laser excitation method with computerized fluorescence imaging recently has been transferred to the hospital for clinical tests. Photoinduced production of singlet oxygen is claimed to be the initial process which leads to later tumour destruction and therapy. PDT has been applied to 20 patients suffering from superficial tumours (TIS GII–III) recurred after application of other treatments. The results after PDT were evaluated by three-monthly check-ups (endoscopy, cytology, bladder mapping, renal ultrasonography) as well as by computed tomography (CT) examination at 8–13 month intervals. In six patients treated by PDT no tumour recurrence has been found over the whole observation period of up to 5 years. Four patients have remained free of tumour (12 and 14 months) after repeated transurethral resection (TUR) and Nd-YAG laser therapy following PDT. Due to an initial application of insufficient irradiation four patients required a second PDT. In one patient a circumscribed dysplasia appeared at the left ostium 26 months following PDT and was treated successfully by means of thermal Nd-YAG laser irradiation following TUR. In six patients slight mucosal atypia persisted for a period of at least 2.5 years. One cystectomy had to be performed because of bladder shrinkage. The dissected bladder, however, was free of tumour. These preliminary results suggest that PDT is justified in patients who are in a worst-case situation with cystectomy recommended in case of recurrent superficial TIS bladder carcinoma and indicate the future potential of photodynamic therapy of tumours. Homogeneous irradiation of the area to be treated and a reliable light dosimetry are prerequisites for an effective tumour therapy. Standard instruments for a routine application do not exist, but are under development.

    Notes: Abstract Over a 10 year period, 149 non-surgical patients were treated for palliation of an oesophageal cancer. One hundred and twenty-nine patients had an advanced cancer; 20 had a small cancer. The initial success rate was 81% and the complications rate was 3.1% for advanced cancers. Average duration of improvement after initial improvement was 138 days. Location was the only factor affecting the initial results in advanced cancers. Improvement duration was affected by the reason for treatment and an association of treatments during follow up. A complete local destruction of the small cancers was obtained in 18 patients. Three patients had a local recurrence during follow up.

    Notes: Abstract Laser applications are developing rapidly in medicine. Virtually every specialty of surgery, and a number of medical specialties, are using the laser for several conditions, and the number of conditions treated seems to grow every day. This fact is of concern to policy-makers in a time of limited resources for health care. Increasingly, health policy decisions are guided by costeffectiveness studies of medical applications. This paper reviews evidence of cost-effectiveness for a number of relatively mature laser applications. In general, although available studies are suggestive of benefit, effectiveness has been demonstrated for relatively few laser applications. Little reliable cost information has been developed, although out-patient therapy and shortened length of stay in hospital seem to be demonstrated for several conditions.

    Notes: Abstract Chromophores in tissue are of considerable interest for the tissue interactions with lasers in the visible light range. The natural chromophores in man are essentially melanin and red cell haemoglobin. With the development of Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) in the treatment of human cancer, the new technology of exogenous chromophores was developed and continues to expand both in laser medicine and laser surgery. This technology relates specific chromophores to specific wavelengths for the destruction of tumours and has been very effective for PDT in those instances where there is accessibility to the tumour mass by the laser beam. The problems today are concerned with how to mark these malignant foci deep in the tissue, how to detect them, and how to direct selected laser beams to the marked carcinomatous tissue. In laser medicine, the field is expanding especially for tissue and laboratory diagnostics.

    Notes: Abstract Eight commercially available HPD-photosensitizers intended for photodynamic therapy were tested in a murine tumour model with regard to their therapeutic efficacy. The regrowth delay of the fibrosarcoma SSK-2 on the mouse C3H, Neuherberg-line, was determined 3, 24, 48 and 72 h after injection of the drugs (dose: 9 mg kg−1 body weight). The corresponding pharmacodynamics, as measured by regrowth delay, were approximated by an exponential function and the characterizing coefficients derived. These coefficients served to quantify the photodynamic properties of the drugs. The pharmacodynamics of five substances were compared with those obtained fluorometrically. The latter showed shorter decay constants than the therapy-correlated substances which indicates different metabolic behaviour of the therapeutic and diagnostically useful fluorescent components of haematoporphyrin-derived photosensitizers.

    Notes: Abstract Laser light of low energy is discussed to have an accelerating effect on wound healing. The aim of the present study was to proof whether HeNe laser irradiations have a positive effect on regeneration of capillaries. For this purpose aluminium chambers were implanted in the dorsal skin flap of Syrian hamsters. After coagulation of blood vessels by means of an argon laser the tissue was irradiated daily with the low energy light of a HeNe laser. Regeneration of capillaries was studied by means of intravital microscopy. The results of the study revealed a positive effect of low dose HeNe laser irradiation on the regeneration of capillaries at day 5 after the coagulation. The measurable part of the capillaries was about 27% higher for the irradiated animals compared to controls.

    Notes: Abstract This paper presents an analysis of Hagen-Poiseulle flow through plane random anisotropic networks of interconnected channels. Macroscopic permeability tensor of the network is expressed in terms of statistico-geometrical characteristics like the degree of anisotropy in channel orientations, average co-ordination number of the network and first two moments of channel length distribution. Analytical results are illustrated and verified using numerical analysis of flow in a simulated random network. The emphasis of the paper is on the effects of anisotropy on distributions of flow rates in channels. It is shown that, due to anisotropy the maximum flow rate generally occurs in channels that are not aligned along the direction of the macroscopic pressure gradient.

    Notes: Abstract Sediment deposition and its accumulation in a large resorvoir depends on the inflow and reservoir storage content, respectively. Because of this fact it is possible to model the cumulative deposition of sediment as an additive process defined on a bivariate Markov chain. Using the bivariate Markov chain model the mean and variance of the cumulative deposition of John Martin Reservoir, Colorado, U.S.A. are estimated and compared with observed sedimentation data.

    Notes: Abstract For a proposed highway bridge or culvert, the total cost to the public during its expected service life includes capital investment on the structures, regular operation and maintenance costs, and various flood related costs. The flood related damage costs include items such as replacement and repair costs of the highway bridge or culvert, flood plain property damage costs, users costs from traffic interruptions and detours, and others. As the design discharge increases, the required capital investment increases but the corresponding flood related damage costs decrease. Hydraulic design of a bridge or culvert using a riskbased approach is to choose among the alternatives the one associated with the least total expected cost. In this paper, the risk-based design procedure is applied to pipe culvert design. The effect of the hydrologic uncertainties such as sample size and type of flood distribution model on the optimal culvert design parameters including design return period and total expected cost are examined in this paper.

    Notes: Abstract Our results illustrate the performance of at-site and regional GEV/PWM flood quantile estimators in regions with different coefficients of variation, degrees of regional heterogeneity, record lengths, and number of sites. Analytic approximations of bias and variance are employed. For realistic GEV distributions and short records, the index-flood quantile estimator performs better than a 2-parameter GEV/PWM quantile estimator with a regional shape parameter, or a 3-parameter at-site GEV/PWM quantile estimator, in both humid and especially in arid regions, as long as the degree of regional heterogeneity is moderate. As regional heterogeneity or record lengths increases, 2-parameter estimators quickly dominate. Flood frequency models that assign probabilities larger than 2% to negative flows are unrealistic; experiments employing such distributions provide questionable results. This appraisal generally demonstrates the value of regionalizing estimators of the shape of a flood distribution, and sometimes the coefficient of variation.

    Notes: Abstract Analysis from a number of different perspectives has shown diffusion and dispersion in natural porous formations to generally be nonlocal in character, i.e., the mass balance involves integro-partial differential equations. Only in certain asymptotic limits do these laws localize to classical partial differential equations. Compiled within is a resume of nonlocal laws that our group has developed over the last few years for systems with physical, chemical and biological heterogeneity. Analytical tools used to obtain these laws are nonequilibrium and equilibrium statistical mechanics, and first-order spectral-perturbation methods.     Notes: Abstract The generation of the second and higher order moment equations for a set of stochastic differential equations based on Ito's differential lemma is difficult, even for small system of equations. From the knowledge of the statistical properties of the Gaussian white noises associated with the parameters and input coefficients of a set of stochastic differential equations of typeA.Ż+B.Z=C(t), a way to automatically generate the second order moment equations in a computer is presented in this paper. The resulting set of first and second order moment equations is also presented in the same state-space form of the original set of stochastic differential equations through a vectorization of the correlation matrix, which takes advantage of its symmetry. The procedure involved here avoids the inversion of matrixA to apply Ito's differential lemma. Therefore, the presented numerical implementation reduces the computational effort required in the formulation and solution of the moment equations. Moreover, other robust and efficient numerical deterministic integration schemes can be equally applied to the solution of the moment equations.

    Notes: Abstract We present a diagrammatic method for solving stochastic 1-D and 2-D steady-state flow equations in bounded domains. The diagrammatic method results in explicit solutions for the moments of the hydraulic head. This avoids certain numerical constraints encountered in realization-based methods. The diagrammatic technique also allows for the consideration of finite domains or large fluctuations, and is not restricted by distributional assumptions. The results of the method for 1-D and 2-D finite domains are compared with those obtained through a realization-based approach. Mean and variance of head are well reproduced for all log-conductivity variances inputted, including those larger than one. The diagrammatic results also compare favorably to hydraulic head moments derived by standard analytic methods requiring a linearized form of the flow equation.

    Notes: Abstract A geomorphological study at the confluence of the Danube and the Isar in Bavaria required long series of daily discharges in both rivers. A model that generates simultaneous correlated streamflows in both rivers was developed and tested. The model is a modified shot noise model, first developed by Treiber (1975) for a single river, that was adapted to two rivers. It generates correlated pulses of events that produce flow for each river, and these pulses are then convoluted with a river specific systems function. The model, after being calibrated for the two rivers on the basis of 85 years of records, yields artificial series of discharges, in which the statistical properties of the historical records are reproduced. The performance of the model was tested with 20 generated series each 100 years long.
