Notizen: The principle of the mise-á-la-masse method is to earth one current electrode of a pair in a conducting mineral show (in a borehole, in an outcrop etc.) and measure the resulting distribution of electric potentials. The distribution will, to some extent, reflect the geometry of the ore mass of which the mineral show forms a part.In a mise-á-la-masse survey of a lead-zinc deposit in Central Sweden electric potentials were measured on the surface of the ground as well as in some 25 drillholes, in either case with earthings (successively) in three different parts of the irregular ore deposit. Besides this, measurements were made in drillholes with earthings in two further drillholes.Geologic correlation between the drillholes is difficult in the present case on account of the irregular geometry of the ore deposit. However, the mise-á-la-masse measurements clearly showed the dip and the pitch of the ore body, established connections between the different ore widths encountered in the various holes, and yielded information about the shape of the ore mass.In particular, the survey showed that the ore lenses must be crescent-shaped rather than tabular, and the dip was indicated to be westerly, instead of easterly as originally presumed.Three-dimensional models of equipotential surfaces were constructed from the observed drillhole and surface potentials (using transparent plastic sheets and thin copper wire) and these helped to elucidate the mass geometry further. The surface and underground potential data collected in the present case should be of nterest to geophysicists working on analytic continuation problems.

Notizen: Geophysical field equipment has undergone rapid changes in the past decade; from simple AGC amplifiers and galvo cameras to binary gain switching amplifiers and digital recorders, all in an attempt to keep pace with the new geophysical interpretive methods developed, and the growing acceptance of the terminology, methods, and philosophy of communication theory. The additional tools of the digital recorder and digital computer make it possible to utilize these new techniques in geophysical processing. Accomplishing these new techniques demands severe requirements on the digital field recording process in handling the decreasing energy return from the seismometer, and to fully realize the capabilities of digital techniques in reducing data. Simple automatic gain control may be used. However, in the more sophisticated interpretive methods, such as autoregression and deconvolution, it is necessary to reconstruct the actual energy levels in the computer. Recording the control signal used in master AGC or programmed gain control may prove satisfactory; however the accuracy of control versus gain is limited to I% for such analog instrumentation. To utilize the computer to its fullest extent, and to accurately perform these new techniques, requires an accuracy of I% or better. This accuracy is obtainable by using a step gain control where the gain is increased by fixed steps in which each step represents a gain in amplification by a constant factor. The accuracy in this case can be made dependent only on the tolerance of resistors used as attenuators or feedback elements. Preferably the constant factor of gain steps should be a number easily handled by the computer. By using 6 db steps it becomes a simple matter to shift binary numbers, such as multiplying or dividing by 10 in the decimal system. The requirements or parameters for such an amplifier system, and the elements of the amplifier necessary to achieve these requirements are presented.

Notizen: Consideration is given to the use of a configuration of four electrodes set in a square array for resistivity measurements. It is found that, by passing current successively between different pairs of electrodes, an apparent resistivity can be determined which is both more sensitive to the position of the array centre and less dependent on orientation than the measures usually obtained with colinear arrays of electrodes. At the same time the observations made enable the degree of the departure of local conditions from conditions of lateral homogeneity to be assessed.Theoretical and practical examples of the use of this electrode system are given and the use of the system both as a tool in mapping and in depth investigations is considered. It is shown that provided electrode spacings are suitably arranged the results of a probe carried out using the square array can be interpreted by conventional methods. The system is shown to have particular advantages in the investigation of lateral resistivity variations and the reduced dependence on orientation makes possible the recasting of interpretation data in an orientationally invariant form with a consequent drastic reduction in the number of type curves required for a particular problem.

Notizen: A large self-potential anomaly was outlined in 1963–64 at Tantahuatay near Hualgayoc in the Andes of northern Peru. Peak value recorded was–1842 millivolts–thus making it one of the strongest, or perhaps the strongest, SP anomaly ever measured. A lack of detailed geological data precludes the formulation of an adequate explanation for the Tantahuatay anomaly, but geological and mineralogical similarities with the well-documented Venencocha anomaly near Cerro de Pasco, Peru (Kruger and Lacy, 1949), suggest that the anomaly arises from sulfuric acid associated with the mineral alunite. The anomaly obviously cannot be explained by the half-cell mechanism of Sato and Mooney (1960), who place a limit of 700 millivolts on self-potential anomalies over sulfide bodies. Further study of the Tantahuatay anomaly would be of interest in understanding self-potential mechanisms in general.

Notizen: The electromagnetic field radiated from a magnetic dipole lying on the ground is considered, in the extremely low frequency range (DC to 20 000 Hertz).Theoretical and experimental data are given on the characteristics of the surface wave (vanishing wave) generated at the air-ground interface, in the case of an homogeneous subsurface. The case of a subsurface with electrical resistivity varying with depth is considered. It is shown how the above-mentioned characteristics may be applied in the quantitative investigation of the electrical resistivity of the subsurface as a function of depth, in a method using the measurements on the ground of all the components of the radiated field: horizontal electrical components, vertical and horizontal magnetic components.

Notizen: A formula is developed for the vertical magnetic field due to an alternating current passing through a long horizontal cable placed on a two-layer ground. The variations of the phase and amplitude ratio of the vertical field, along profiles perpendicular to the cable line are investigated. Within the limits encountered in practice, it is found that if the upper layer is conductive, as compared to the lower layer, the phase may vary appreciably whereas the amplitude ratio changes as in the case of vacuum.

Notizen: Mapping of fault patterns is an important part of geophysical exploration. A computerized digital template analysis method is described which tests gravity maps for the effects of faults by comparing measured gravity data with calculated master curves. The interpreted gravity data are incorporated in a tectonic map using geological symbols and units, for ready use by the geologists.Tectonics can be investigated by gravity detailing if the smallest undulations on the Bouguer map are taken into consideration. Up to now, residual and derivative gravity maps have explained gravity effects by assuming spherical bodies which are almost unknown in geology. The method discussed here uses tectonic elements, such as fault-blocks and dikes as a basis of interpretation instead of the spherical bodies of the conventional interpretation methods.Gravity data can be easily and relatively cheaply obtained in the early phases of exploration by area wide spot coverage following lines of easy access such as roads, etc. Seismic studies, by contrast, have the disadvantage of being executed along predetermined profile lines. Only after sufficient detailing do seismic profiles permit-if at all -an areal mapping of faults. Thus a tectonic map is obtained only at the end of a geophysical survey instead of being available prior to the planning of costly seismic profiles. The use of gravimetric data and their interpretation by the suggested method provides tectonic detail maps in the early phases of geophysical studies. In addition, this article discusses a general geophysical interpretation method, using the investigation of faults by gravity as an example. Applications of this method for different gravity and magnetics problems as well as for combined interpretations are outlined. Detailed case histories will be published in later articles.

Notizen: To be able to make use of all existing probe interpretation techniques, it is desirable that field resistivity observations be conducted in such a way that it is possible to construct an equivalent curve for the surface variation of potential about a point source. Further, the usual parallel layer interpretation will only be justified in as much as the observed potential curve is compatible with such a subsurface geometry. Thus, whilst a potential curve may be constructed from suitable finite potential differences obtained using a Wenner configuration of electrodes, it can be shown, using the tri-potential technique of measurements, that these potential differences may arise partly from lateral resistivity variations. In this paper, a ladder network technique is employed to display these lateral effects and an adjustment method proposed to reduce them. The adjusted potential differences obtained form a consecutive series suitable for summation to give the potential function. These values are subject to further minimum adjustments required for them to comply with slope and curvature conditions for a layered medium. After forming the potential curve by summation, a final numerical smoothing process is carried out. From this smoothed potential curve, corresponding Wenner and Schlumberger curves can readily be derived for interpretation. The method proposed thus attempts to extract from the observed data the maximum part which can be reconciled with a purely depth variation of resistivity. A method is also proposed for compounding the ‘errors of closure’ of the network to provide a Lateral Inhomogeneity Index which gives a measure of the departure of the observed data from the basic interpretation requirements. The method involves no great labour, but can readily be programmed for a computer if desired. Examples are given of the application of the method to field observations. In the interest of objectivity, the final smoothing has been confined to a single stage but in certain very extreme examples a further stage may prove desirable.

Notizen: Errors in acoustic logs have a significant influence on the assessment of formations, the description of oil deposits and modelling using synthetic seismograms. The elimination of these errors is a problem that many researchers have been trying to solve for many years. We derive theoretical formulae for calculating the radial depth of investigation of acoustic logging, and analyse the relationship between the error in acoustic interval transit time and the altered zone thickness. We explain in detail how mud affects the acoustic interval transit time. We also describe the variation of altered zone thickness with time and a method for calculating the altered zone thickness. Finally, we present a set of new methods that can be directly applied to correct the disturbing influence on acoustic curves. Our results are obtained based on the fact that acoustic velocities in the altered zone show a small lateral variation. Examples are given of analysing the acoustic log data, which are collected from a BS well at three different times. This paper is significant both for selection of the acoustic logging device with proper transmitter-to-receiver distance (spacing) and improvement of the device.

Notizen: We characterize the seismic response of Lake Vostok, an Antarctic subglacial lake located at nearly 4 km depth below the ice sheet. This study is relevant for the determination of the location and morphology of subglacial lakes. The characterization requires the design of a methodology based on rock physics and numerical modelling of wave propagation. The methodology involves rock-physics models of the shallow layer (firn), the ice sheet and the lake sediments, numerical simulation of synthetic seismograms, ray tracing, τ–p transforms, and AVA analysis, based on the theoretical reflection coefficients. The modelled reflection seismograms show a set of straight events (refractions through the firn and top-ice layer) and the two reflection events associated with the top and bottom of the lake. Theoretical AVA analysis of these reflections indicates that, at near offsets, the PP-wave anomaly is negative for the ice/water interface and constant for the water/sediment interface. This behaviour is shown by AVA analysis of the synthetic data set. This study shows that subglacial lakes can be identified by using seismic methods. Moreover, the methodology provides a tool for designing suitable seismic surveys.

Such a configuration allows the robust measurement of fracture-induced anisotropy by the analysis of certain seismic attributes with respect to azimuth.

Notizen: We investigate the interactions between the elastic parameters, VP, VS and density, estimated by non-linear inversion of AVA data, and the petrophysical parameters, depth (pressure), porosity, clay content and fluid saturation, of an actual gas-bearing reservoir. In particular, we study how the ambiguous solutions derived from the non-uniqueness of the seismic inversion affect the estimates of relevant rock properties. It results that the physically admissible values of the rock properties greatly reduce the range of possible seismic solutions and this range contains the actual values given by the well. By means of a statistical inversion, we analyse how approximate a priori knowledge of the petrophysical properties and of their relationships with the seismic parameters can be of help in reducing the ambiguity of the inversion solutions and eventually in estimating the petrophysical properties of the specific target reservoir. This statistical inversion allows the determination of the most likely values of the sought rock properties along with their uncertainty ranges. The results show that the porosity is the best-resolved rock property, with its most likely value closely approaching the actual value found by the well, even when we insert somewhat erroneous a priori information. The hydrocarbon saturation is the second best-resolved parameter, but its most likely value does not match the well data. The depth of the target interface is the least-resolved parameter and its most likely value is strongly dependent on a priori information. Although no general conclusions can be drawn from the results of this exercise, we envisage that the proposed AVA–petrophysical inversion and its possible extensions may be of use in reservoir characterization.

Notizen: The main objective of the AVO inversion is to obtain posterior distributions for P-wave velocity, S-wave velocity and density from specified prior distributions, seismic data and well-log data. The inversion problem also involves estimation of a seismic wavelet and the seismic-noise level. The noise model is represented by a zero mean Gaussian distribution specified by a covariance matrix. A method for joint AVO inversion, wavelet estimation and estimation of the noise level is developed in a Bayesian framework. The stochastic model includes uncertainty of both the elastic parameters, the wavelet, and the seismic and well-log data. The posterior distribution is explored by Markov-chain Monte-Carlo simulation using the Gibbs' sampler algorithm. The inversion algorithm has been tested on a seismic line from the Heidrun Field with two wells located on the line. The use of a coloured seismic-noise model resulted in about 10% lower uncertainties for the P-wave velocity, S-wave velocity and density compared with a white-noise model. The uncertainty of the estimated wavelet is low. In the Heidrun example, the effect of including uncertainty of the wavelet and the noise level was marginal with respect to the AVO inversion results.

Notizen: We use a poroelastic modelling algorithm to compute numerical experiments on wave propagation in a rock sample with partial saturation using realistic fluid distribution patterns from tomography scans. Frequencies are in the range 10 to 500 kHz. The rock is a homogeneous isotropic sandstone partially filled with gas and water, which are defined by their characteristic values of viscosity, compressibility and density. We assume no mixing and that the two different pore-fills occupy different macroscopic regions. The von Kármán self-similar correlation function is used, employing different fractal parameters to model uniform and patchy fluid distributions, respectively, where effective saturation is varied in steps from full gas to full water saturation.Without resorting to additional matrix–fluid interaction mechanisms, we are able to reproduce the main features of the variation in wave velocity and attenuation with effective saturation and frequency, as those of published laboratory experiments. Furthermore, the behaviour of the attenuation peaks versus water saturation and frequency is similar to that of White's model. The conversion of primary P-wave energy into dissipating slow waves at the heterogeneities is shown to be the main mechanism for attenuating the primary wavefield. Fluid/gas patches are shown to affect attenuation more than equivalent patches in the permeability or solid-grain properties.

Notizen: 3D Kirchhoff migration (KM) smears a trace's time sample along a quasi-ellipsoid in the model space. This is a costly and sometimes noisy process as reflection energy is smeared far away from the actual reflector position, introducing far-field migration artefacts. As a reduced form of 3D KM, 3D wavepath migration (WM) smears a picked reflection arrival to a small Fresnel zone portion centred about the specular reflection point, leading to fewer migration artefacts and reduced computation time. Both the traveltime and the angle of incidence are required by WM for locating the specular reflection point. Our results with 3D prestack synthetic data show that WM generates fewer migration artefacts and can sometimes define complex structure better than KM. Our results with 3D prestack field data show that WM can mostly suppress migration artefacts and can sometimes resolve reflection interfaces better than KM. The CPU comparison shows that, for both the synthetic and field data examples, WM can be more than an order of magnitude faster than KM. The limitation with 3D WM is that the angle of incidence calculation is sensitive to the recording geometry and the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio, which can lead to blurred images.

Notizen: An accurate and efficient 3D finite-difference (FD) forward algorithm for DC resistivity modelling is developed. In general, the most time-consuming part of FD calculation is to solve large sets of linear equations: Ax=b, where A is a large sparse band symmetric matrix. The direct method using complete Choleski decomposition is quite slow and requires much more computer storage. We have introduced a row-indexed sparse storage mode to store the coefficient matrix A and an incomplete Choleski conjugate-gradient (ICCG) method to solve the large linear systems. By taking advantage of the matrix symmetry and sparsity, the ICCG method converges much more quickly and requires much less computer storage. It takes approximately 15 s on a 533 MHz Pentium computer for a grid with 46 020 nodes, which is approximately 700 times faster than the direct method and 2.5 times faster than the symmetric successive over-relaxation (SSOR) conjugate-gradient method. Compared with 3D finite-element resistivity modelling with the improved ICCG solver, our algorithm is more efficient in terms of number of iterations and computer time. In addition, we solve for the secondary potential in 3D DC resistivity modelling by a simple manipulation of the FD equations. Two numerical examples of a two-layered model and a vertical contact show that the method can achieve much higher accuracy than solving for the total potential directly with the same grid nodes. In addition, a 3D cubic body is simulated, for which the dipole–dipole apparent resistivities agree well with the results obtained with the finite-element and integral-equation methods. In conclusion, the combination of several techniques provides a rapid and accurate 3D FD forward modelling method which is fundamental to 3D resistivity inversion.

Notizen: We present results from the resolution and sensitivity analysis of 1D DC resistivity and IP sounding data using a non-linear inversion. The inversion scheme uses a theoretically correct Metropolis–Gibbs' sampling technique and an approximate method using numerous models sampled by a global optimization algorithm called very fast simulated annealing (VFSA). VFSA has recently been found to be computationally efficient in several geophysical parameter estimation problems. Unlike conventional simulated annealing (SA), in VFSA the perturbations are generated from the model parameters according to a Cauchy-like distribution whose shape changes with each iteration. This results in an algorithm that converges much faster than a standard SA. In the course of finding the optimal solution, VFSA samples several models from the search space. All these models can be used to obtain estimates of uncertainty in the derived solution. This method makes no assumptions about the shape of an a posteriori probability density function in the model space. Here, we carry out a VFSA-based sensitivity analysis with several synthetic and field sounding data sets for resistivity and IP. The resolution capability of the VFSA algorithm as seen from the sensitivity analysis is satisfactory. The interpretation of VES and IP sounding data by VFSA, incorporating resolution, sensitivity and uncertainty of layer parameters, would generally be more useful than the conventional best-fit techniques.

Notizen: The nth-order moments of the electromagnetic impulse response are useful for interpreting electromagnetic data. We have derived an analytic expression for the half-order moment of a conductive half-space. By inverting this expression, the measured half-order moment can be used to estimate an apparent conductivity of the ground. The first-order moment can also be used to estimate the half-space conductivity. A sensitivity analysis indicates that for an airborne EM configuration, the half-order moment will be most sensitive to material in the top 26–48 m, while the first-order moment will be sensitive to deeper material (down to depths between 66 and 127 m).

Notizen: Spectral factorization is a computational procedure for constructing minimum-phase (stable inverse) filters required for recursive inverse filtering. We present a novel method of spectral factorization. The method iteratively constructs an approximation of the minimum-phase filter with the given autocorrelation by repeated forward and inverse filtering and rearranging of the terms. This procedure is especially efficient in the multidimensional case, where the inverse recursive filtering is enabled by the helix transform. To exemplify a practical application of the proposed method, we consider the problem of smooth two-dimensional data regularization. Splines in tension are smooth interpolation surfaces whose behaviour in unconstrained regions is controlled by the tension parameter. We show that such surfaces can be efficiently constructed with recursive filter preconditioning and we introduce a family of corresponding two-dimensional minimum-phase filters. The filters are created by spectral factorization on a helix.

Notizen: Fractured rock is often modelled under the assumption of perfect fluid pressure equalization between the fractures and equant porosity. This is consistent with laboratory estimates of the characteristic squirt-flow frequency. However, these laboratory measurements are carried out on rock samples which do not contain large fractures. We consider coupled fluid motion on two scales: the grain scale which controls behaviour in laboratory experiments and the fracture scale. Our approach reproduces generally accepted results in the low- and high-frequency limits. Even under the assumption of a high squirt-flow frequency, we find that frequency-dependent anisotropy can occur in the seismic frequency band when larger fractures are present. Shear-wave splitting becomes dependent on frequency, with the size of the fractures playing a controlling role in the relationship. Strong anisotropic attenuation can occur in the seismic frequency band. The magnitude of the frequency dependence is influenced strongly by the extent of equant porosity. With these results, it becomes possible in principle to distinguish between fracture- and microcrack-induced anisotropy, or more ambitiously to measure a characteristic fracture length from seismic data.

Notizen: We consider a layered heterogeneous viscoelastic transversely isotropic medium with a vertical symmetry axis (a viscoelastic TIV medium) and parameters that depend on depth only. This takes into account intrinsic attenuation, anisotropy and thin layering. The seismic wavefield is decomposed into up- and downgoing waves scaled by the vertical energy flux. This scaling gives important symmetry relationships for both reflection and transmission (R/T) responses. For a stack of homogeneous layers, the exact reflection response can be computed in a numerically stable way by a simple layer-recursive algorithm. We derive exact plane-wave R/T coefficients and several linear and quadratic approximations between two viscoelastic TIV media, as functions of the real-valued horizontal slowness. The approximations are valid for pre- and post-critical values of horizontal slowness provided that the proper complex square roots are used when computing the vertical slowness. Numerical examples demonstrate that the quadratic approximations can be used for large differences in medium parameters, while the linear approximations can be used for small differences. For weak anisotropy it is sufficient to use an isotropic background medium, while for strong anisotropy it is necessary to use a weak TIV or TIV background medium. We also extend the O'Doherty–Anstey formula to the P- and SV-wave transmission responses of a stack of viscoelastic TIV layers, taking into account intrinsic attenuation, anisotropy and thin layering.

Notizen: The first-order perturbation theory is used for fast 3D computation of quasi-compressional (qP)-wave traveltimes in arbitrarily anisotropic media. For efficiency we implement the perturbation approach using a finite-difference (FD) eikonal solver. Traveltimes in the unperturbed reference medium are computed with an FD eikonal solver, while perturbed traveltimes are obtained by adding a traveltime correction to the traveltimes of the reference medium. The traveltime correction must be computed along the raypath in the reference medium. Since the raypath is not determined in FD eikonal solvers, we approximate rays by linear segments corresponding to the direction of the phase normal of plane wavefronts in each cell. An isotropic medium as a reference medium works well for weak anisotropy. Using a medium with ellipsoidal anisotropy as a background medium in the perturbation approach allows us to consider stronger anisotropy without losing computational speed. The traveltime computation in media with ellipsoidal anisotropy using an FD eikonal solver is fast and accurate. The relative error is below 0.5% for the models investigated in this study. Numerical examples show that the reference model with ellipsoidal anisotropy allows us to compute the traveltime for models with strong anisotropy with an improved accuracy compared with the isotropic reference medium.

Notizen: Measurements of seismic anisotropy in fractured rock are used at present to deduce information about the fracture orientation and the spatial distribution of fracture intensity. Analysis of the data is based upon equivalent-medium theories that describe the elastic response of a rock containing cracks or fractures in the long-wavelength limit. Conventional models assume frequency independence and cannot distinguish between microcracks and macrofractures. The latter, however, control the fluid flow in many subsurface reservoirs. Therefore, the fracture size is essential information for reservoir engineers. In this study we apply a new equivalent-medium theory that models frequency-dependent anisotropy and is sensitive to the length scale of fractures. The model considers velocity dispersion and attenuation due to a squirt-flow mechanism at two different scales: the grain scale (microcracks and equant matrix porosity) and formation-scale fractures. The theory is first tested and calibrated against published laboratory data. Then we present the analysis and modelling of frequency-dependent shear-wave splitting in multicomponent VSP data from a tight gas reservoir. We invert for fracture density and fracture size from the frequency dependence of the time delay between split shear waves. The derived fracture length matches independent observations from borehole data.

Notizen: In one geophysical survey over a salt dome in the Gulf of Mexico, data taken from a single magnetic and seismic shipborne traverse demonstrated significantly the importance of magnetic measurements. The reduced magnetic and seismic profiles were integrated with gravity measurements from an earlier survey demonstrating the value of obtaining simultaneous geophysical data. The traverse was approximately 25 miles in length, 135 miles southeast of Galveston, Texas. The observed gradient averaged approximately 2 gammas per 1000 feet and crosses the southwest corner of a large shallow salt dome called the Way Dome. The recorded magnetic profile over the salt dome shows a negative magnetic anomaly extending for approximately 12 miles with a maximum amplitude of approximately 20 gammas. This negatively anomaly is due to the negative susceptibility contrast between the salt and cap rock that truncates the surrounding parent sediments. The shape of the negative anomaly correlates well with the continous seismic record and clearly delineates the topographical and structural features of the salt dome. The recorded analog magnetic profile was replotted, with both the regional gradient and time variations removed, which makes the observed anomaly much sharper than is noticeable on the original recorded strip chart record. A theoretical magnetic anomaly was calculated using a computer program for comparison to the observed anomaly. The results showed good correlation.

Notizen: Amplitudes of the vertical ground motion are larger in the critical angle region than in the near vertical region, especially amplitudes coming from deeper boundaries or interfaces with small velocity contrast. Four basic boundary models are used to derive specific travel time patterns for first order and higher order interfaces. The transition from reflected waves to diving waves in the supercritical angle region is shown for the different models.Examples from wide angle surveys in Bavaria and in the Buchara region in the USSR have many characteristic similarities. Travel time patterns and asymptotic velocities are almost identical. The most important boundaries of the continental crust - the Mohorovč Ić discontinuity and the top of the crystalline basement - correspond to two boundary models mentioned before. Amplitude and frequency investigations have been used to derive items of the M-discontinuity. It is certainly a gradient zone and seems to have a lenticular structure with material of stepwise different velocities.

Notizen: When a small, transparent replica of a seismic section is illuminated by a homogeneous beam of coherent, monochromatic parallel light a diffraction pattern is created that is representation of the double Fourier spectrum of the recorded seismic waves, i.e. their spectrum in terms of frequency, f, and apparent wave number, k.Masking selected parts of this diffraction pattern causes the spectrum to be filtered: the recomposition of the filtered spectrum then provides a filtered section. The ideal seismic section for this purpose would be a continuous variable density section obtained from recording made at every point of the seismic line. The light transmission coefficient (in terms of light amplitude) at each spot of the replica should be linearly related to the instantaneous seismic signal strength at the spot on the seismic section to which it refers.Unfortunately we cannot make recordings at every point of a seismic line and in our practically realisable recordings we have to be content with sampling in the direction of the location coordinate x. This means that with variable density recordings aliasing will be present and evident in the spectrum obtained in the direction of k; furthermore, the aliased spectrum is also multiplied by a sine function of k because the recording obtained at a given station is not presented on the seismic section as a single line along the time axis, but occupies the entire width of the trace. The diffraction patterns created by variable density recordings of dipping sine waves, including clipped recordings, and of the effect of dip filtering in such sections are discussed. The efficiency of dip rejection is shown to decrease with increasing dip.The diffraction pattern of a variable density recording is found to be characterised by a relationship between point pairs in the pattern. No such simple relationship has been found for the diffraction pattern of a variable area section; the spectra of such VAR sections belong to a very special class, because the amplitude transmission coefficient has only two values, viz. 0 and 1.Consequently, selective masking of the diffraction pattern of a VAR section may give rise to a filtered profile that does not look like a VAR section at all.General statements about the diffraction pattern of VAR sections are hard to give, because the transmission coefficient at a given point in the replica is not proportional to the signal level in the seismic section at the relevant point. In the case of VAR presentation of harmonic waves it was found that, as well as the aliasing effect in the k direction, higher harmonics of the frequency are also introduced. Some synthetic examples are given that show dip filtering to be less effective with VAR than with variable density recordings. Some arguments are advanced in favour of the opinion that high-pass filtering of VAR sections will have less success than low-pass filtering. This is demonstrated by two synthetic examples.

Notizen: The theory is explained and practical applications are shown for a numerical procedure in seismology. Particularly the problems concerning the generation of waves under the action of external pressures, and their propagation, in non-homogeneous, both elastic and absorbing media, have been carried out. These problems have been assumed mono-dimensional and refer to plane and spherical waves. The procedure is based on the solution, by means of series, of the wave differential equation, non-homogeneous, and with non-constant coefficients. It is a direct numerical method whose advantage is, mainly, the possibility of tackling, without great difficulties, problems regarding non-homogeneous elastic and absorbing media. On the contrary the methods which require the theoretical expression of the solutions by means of formulae, generally, present conceptual and numerical difficulties. As examples of application of this procedure, the following cases have been carried out by means of numerical calculations.a) Propagation of a wave, initially of symmetrical shape, in a viscoelastic medium; from the results it appears that the wave propagates without losing its symmetry, i.e. without sensible dispersion. A theoretical analysis has been carried out to justify this result, showing that the dispersion in viscoelastic media is noticeable only for relatively high frequencies. It seems that the practical absence of dispersion in field experiments do not exclude necessarily the viscoelastic character of absorption.b) Generation of plane waves under the effect of a uniform pressure distributed on the plane surface of a medium. The way the length and the shape of the generated wave depends not only on the type of pressure acting on the surface but also on the near surface impedance variations has been studied.c) Generation of a spherical wave under the action of a pressure in a spherical hole. The examples treated show how the length and shape of the wave depends on the radius of the hole. Particularly the frequencies of the wave spectrum are proportional to this radius, for a given type of pressure acting in the hole. The characteristics of this procedure would also permit the study of media for which the stress-strain relations are not univocal and linear (non linear absorption). This study, interesting for the wave propagation in rocks, is worth while to be carried out in a special paper.

Notizen: For the computation of the vertical component Hz of the magnetic field of a horizontal A.C. dipole lying on the earth's surface, a recurrence formula is presented for a horizontally stratified half space, to obtain the (n+ 1)-layer case from the w-layer case.By means of several computed diagrams for the two-layer case, Hz can be determined for different ratios of conductivity of the subsoil and that of the overburden. Thereby the distance from the dipole as well as the layer thickness h are expressed in terms of the wave length A of a plain wave in the overburden. Assuming a sufficiently large conductivity difference, the results show that evidence about the subsurface conditions can be obtained if the distance between the measuring coil and the dipole is of the order of A/3, and if the thickness h of the layer varies within the range A/100 〈 h 〈 A/6.As an example for the 3-layer case, a nonconducting intermediate layer is assumed.

Notizen: A nomogram is presented which enables evaluation of the components of magnetic attraction of a homogeneous finite rectangular prism, and of gravitational attraction due to a uniform rectangular lamina. In practice any three-dimensional body could be approximated by a number of right rectangular prisms of varying dimensions governed by the shape of the body. The magnetic attraction of the whole body is then obtained by numerical summation of the effects of the constituent prisms. For evaluating the gravitational effect, the cross-section of the body corresponding to each elevation contour is approximated by a number of rectangular laminae (or by a stepping polygon) the attraction of which can be determined with the aid of the same nomogram. The total gravitational attraction of the body is obtained by a process of graphical integration along the vertical axis.

Notizen: In [50] and [51] a theory has been developed relating formation factor, permeability and porosity of porous sedimentary rock by means of statistical parameters of the pore system, and further, tying those statistical parameters to other macroscopically measurable quantities like capillarity, capillary retention, flow dispersion etc. This paper deals with experimental methods and apparatus for checking the theoretically derived relations using columns of packed loose or artificially consolidated sands or other granular matter. Some initial experiments, mainly intended for checking out equipment and methods are reported. The discussion of the results so far shows good agreement with the theory in most cases, except for the irreducible water saturation. However, for a definite statement on the general validity of the theory more data must be accumulated.

Notizen: Some of the methods such as regional removal and second derivative calculations which can be used to outline anomalies on potential data maps can be thought of as a filtering operation. The analysis and design of such two-dimensional filters by means of direct and inverse two-dimensional Fourier transforms have been considered. An analysis of several published sets of second derivative coefficient sets indicates that, in general, they are not a good approximation to the theoretical second derivative filter. Alternate methods of designing regional removal and second derivative filters are discussed. The properties of various two-dimensional filters are further illustrated by means of maps obtained from the convolution of several of these filters with a set of observed field data. These maps show the large changes in anomaly shape which can result from the inclusion or rejection of various wavelength components.

Notizen: This paper is the follow-up of an earlier paper by the same author on the calculation of standard-graphs for horizontally stratified subsoils. The method which was developed in that earlier paper was destined for handwork; it was laid down in master-tables. The present paper deals with the presentation of similar methods to the computer expert in purely mathematical denotation. Two different denotations are described for the calculation of the image pole strengths involved. The first denotation is an improved version of Watsons formulae; it gives the total strengths. The second denotation preserves the character of successive approximations as described in the previous paper. Both denotations have been worked out until a six layer resistivity profile, but actually there is no limitation to the number of layers. There is no restriction to the resistivities of any layer. The only condition is now that all interface depths must be integers. This paper is followed by a paper on the relevant computer program by Argelo in this same issue

Notizen: High precision gravity surveys have to be examined at different points of view: the accuracy which one can expect on the final results, regardless to their distribution, the shape and amplitude of the expected anomalies, depending on these factors, which grid of stations is convenient in each particular case.Under certain condition, using an appropriate procedure, involving strict criteria, it is possible to get on the Bouguer map the same accuracy as the reading one. However an accuracy closed to 0,01 mgal does not imply that anomalies as 0,01 or 0,02 mgal deserved attention. Numerous factors limit our appreciation of significant anomalies to 0,05 mgal, may be a little less. When cavites are concerned, it is always necessary to define the extreme dimensions an depth of volumes which may give detectable anomalies. Some example are given illustrating different aspects of this particular type of geophysical prospecting.

Our purpose is to introduce here a method based on the best summation of a set of traces instead of the best correlation.Practically, this approach has several advantages:1) Two traces only can be correlated at each step whereas the summation can bear on any number of them;2) Optimizing the summation is actually what we are looking for since, at the long end, the success of the improvement is evaluated from the compositing of several traces either weighted or not.On the other hand, an advantage of correlation is the possibility of adding correlations obtained at several places in a same neighbourhood in order to improve the results. With the summation method this is feasible only when dips are inexistent: we shall see that the difficulty due to the dip effect can be turned around. The basic principle of the method can be summed up as follows: traces relating to a same reflection point are considered; several composites are made, each after applying different move out corrections ranging widely around an estimated adequate velocity function. At each time coordinate, the best adapted velocity function, i.e. the one that yields the best phase relation between reflected events, corresponds to the composite trace the average amplitude of which is the largest. This way, the velocity function corresponding to primary reflections as well as those corresponding to multiple reflections can be established accurately. Some examples are shown.

Notizen: The symmetry shown, by the function describing the magnetic anomaly due to a dyke or vertical fault step leads to a method by which an observed profile may be adjusted to conform with that symmetry. By making these adjustments a minimum the ideal dyke or fault profile closest to the observations is constructed. In three of four possible situations this is interpreted by simple geometry.Parallelpiped models may be transformed into two dykes for symmetry analysis. Depth limited models are not so amenable, even in special cases.

Notizen: The use of digital recorders and computers in seismic exploration promises major enhancement of the quality of final documents available to interpreters. The ultimate objectives of recording and processing remain what they always have been:1 Record the reflection wavelet as a function of time; this requirement has been met with satisfactory accuracy for a number of years.2. Record the reflection wavelets with sufficient fidelity to permit the interpreter to recognize them.Various factors affect our ability to achieve this second objective. Certain recording errors are associated with digital recording systems. However, an understanding of the sources of error will enable the operator to use his system properly and to estimate the noise level or inaccuracy of field recordings. Field operations do not require rigorous error analysis; in most cases a satisfactory approximation can be obtained from simple calculations.Three types of “noise”–seismic, instrument and power line–introduce errors. Factors which contribute to over-al recording system error include specifically input noise, power supply ripple, crosstalk, A-D conversion error, quantizing noise, aliasing, distortion. Examination of each component of a recording system, permits the determination of its ultimate effect on the over-all noise level–or error level–of the entire system. Many of the error sources produce statistically independent noise which is not correlative. Where this is true, error voltages from various sources may be combined by taking the square root of the sum of the mean square noise voltages, giving a result slightly greater than the largest single voltage if one source is much greater than any other source. This simplification can be used to estimate over-all system noise levels. Distortion and crosstalk depend on signal amplitude and should be added algebraically in each category. Each final sum should be used as a statistically independent noise source with respect to other system noise sources.Using the foregoing examples and simplified system for estimating over-all system noise, and assuming that much of the distortion (which limits signal/instrument noise ratio to 54 db) can be removed by filtering, we determine that the combined effect of all sources of error is to reduce the system S/N ratio to approximately 74 db.With proper care digital field recording systems can produce very good field records, and exotic computer processes can enhance signal and reduce various forms of noise. However, one always must recall that the level of confidence which one can place in an interpretation of seismic data must be dependent on a knowledge of the accuracy of the basic data.

Notizen: The Terrapak is a new seismic energy source of the surface energy source type. Essentially, the Terrapak consists of a compressed air piston which transmits a shock to the ground by means of a striker plate attached to the piston rod. The Terrapak is truck-mounted together with its ancillary equipment. Shocks can be generated at 8 second intervals, and although the weight of the striker is relatively low (approximately 1400 Ibs) the impact velocity exceeds 66 ft/sec. The energy available is about 85,000 ft. lb., which is equivalent to that produced by conventional weight-dropping methods. The power spectrum of the seismic wave produced by the Terrapak is spread out towards the higher frequencies because its impact velocity is greater than that of a dropping weight. There is a noticeable difference between noise records made with the Terrapak and noise records made with a conventional weight-dropping technique. The same noise frequencies are found in both cases, but low frequency noise is stronger with weight dropping than with the Terrapak, whereas the intermediate frequency reflections obtained using the Terrapak are more suitable for correlation. The expansion of the compressed air generates a sound wave, the effects of which must be eliminated by the use of multiple geophone arrays. A spectrum analysis of the records has confirmed that the waves produced by the Terrapak are rich in intermediate frequency components. This facilitates the picking of reflections in normal areas where the apparent frequency of the reflections is about 30 to 35 c/s.

Notizen: This paper includes publication of two algorithms, to be processed on a digital computer. The algorithms are based upon the two mathematical denotations, presented by Dr. J. C. van Dam in this same issue. The computer programs are written in Algol, in the form of procedures (i.e. subroutines to be activated from a surrounding Algol program). Each of the two procedures is preceded by a numerical analysis. Some remarks are made about the reliability of each of the two procedures, the production and the computing time required.

Notizen: The theory of statistical communication provides an invaluable framework within which it is possible to formulate design criteria and actually obtain solutions for digital filters. These are then applicable in a wide range of geophysical problems. The basic model for the filtering process considered here consists of an input signal, a desired output signal, and an actual output signal. If one minimizes the energy or power existing in the difference between desired and actual filter outputs, it becomes possible to solve for the so-called optimum, or least squares filter, commonly known as the “Wiener” filter. In this paper we derive from basic principles the theory leading to such filters. The analysis is carried out in the time domain in discrete form. We propose a model of a seismic trace in terms of a statistical communication system. This model trace is the sum of a signal time series plus a noise time series. If we assume that estimates of the signal shape and of the noise autocorrelation are available, we may calculate Wiener filters which will attenuate the noise and sharpen the signal. The net result of these operations can then in general be expected to increase seismic resolution. We show a few numerical examples to illustrate the model's applicability to situations one might find in practice.

Notizen: In order to adequately understand the complicated, anelastic processes governing wave propagation in soils or highly weathered rock it seems desirable first to have available a convenient laboratory material for such propagation studies the frequency dependent rheological parameters of which are known beforehand. A property measurement program has been conducted to determine the complex Young's modulus and the complex shear modulus of a commercially available viscoelastic material over a broad spectral region.

Notizen: In the year 1958 the Service for Water Management of the „Rijkswaterstaat” started its program of geo-electrical resistivity prospecting in the western part of the Netherlands. The aim of this program was to obtain data on the salinity distribution of the ground water. The ground water regime in this part of the Netherlands is most intricate. This is due to the geological and geo-hydrological conditions and to the low elevation of the land. Many reclaimed areas are up to several metres below mean sea level. The resistivity data obtained are closely related to the salinity of the ground water. On the basis of bore hole data it was even possible to arrive at calibration curves for the salinity of the ground water in sand deposits. Under special conditions it was also possible to draw conclusions with respect to the presence of less permeable formations as e.g. clay layers. Some remarks are given on the practical performance and the interpretation of the measurements.A review is given of the work done until now. Some results are shown by means of maps of the salinity distribution of the ground water in the western and northern parts of the Netherlands. Two examples are described of the use of the data obtained during the survey in the province of Zuid-Holland.Another two examples are presented of detailed investigations for special purposes in relatively small areas.

Notizen: In mountainous areas it is an inadequate procedure to reduce gravity observations by merely subtracting the effect of an infinite flat slab of material between the station and sea-level, and adding a terrain correction. A programme is described which directly computes the effect of masses above sea-level, and mass-deficiencies below it; as well as the effect of compensating masses under the Pratt and Airy isostatic systems. As an example, the method has been applied to a regional gravity survey of Papua and New Guinea where it is seen to remove the usually high correlation of the Bouguer anomaly with local topography.

Notizen: Judges rated the intensity of NaCl solutions and orange drinks of varying sweetness using category scales and line scales. They performed under four response conditions that varied in reliance on memory: (1) verbal response (2) written response with no retasting and the response sheet removed (3) written response with a single response sheet which allowed past scores to be reviewed and amended but with no retasting (4) the same as ‘3’ but with retasting. Discrimination errors decreased from conditions ‘1’ through ‘4’ indicating how allowing judges to ‘refresh the memory’ improved discrimination. The cognitive processes involved in rating and consequences for scaling protocols and the experimental design for descriptive analysis are discussed in the light of these findings.

Notizen: The effects of sweetener type, sweetener concentration, and fruit flavor on the sensory attributes of soy fortified yogurt were determined. Soy fortified dairy yogurts were made by the addition of soy protein concentrate (0, 2.5, 5%) to standard yogurt mixes prior to fermentation. Sweetener type (sucrose, fructose, sucrose/fructose) and sweetener concentration (6, 8, 10%) were incorporated into yogurts in a split plot experiment with soy concentration as a subplot factor. Flavor effects (plain, lemon, strawberry) were studied in a 3 × 3 factorial experiment (soy concentration × flavor). A trained descriptive panel (n=13) evaluated yogurts for seven flavor and aroma terms. Sweetener type had no effect on sensory properties with the exception of perceived sweetness. Soy flavors and astringency decreased with increasing sweetener concentration. Fruit flavors decreased soy aromas, soy flavors, and astringency in yogurts containing soy protein. These results indicate that sweetener concentration and fruit flavors play a crucial role in formulating yogurts fortified with soy protein.

Notizen: A two-part study determined the effectiveness of gum-based rinses with or without oil for alleviating residuals of a bitter (0.8 g/L caffeine solution) and an astringent (1g/L alum solution) stimuli in serial responses using a sip and spit method. In Experiment 1, rinsing with deionized water was compared to rinsing with 0.3% xanthan gum in water alone or with 5% corn oil and 0.55% carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) in water alone or with 5% or 10% corn oil. The 0.3% xanthan gum and 5% corn oil mixture resulted in the highest stimulus intensity difference before and after rinsing, whereas 0.55% CMC had a value of nearly zero for residual effect. Results of a two-alternative forced choice test used in Experiment 2 indicated that both were equally effective for reducing bitterness residuals, but 0.55% CMC solution resulted in the lowest (p=0.007) residual effect for astringency. Therefore, the 0.55% CMC rinse was considered an effective interstimulus rinse to use for assessing both bitterness and astringency in model solutions.

Notizen: For discrimination tests not requiring the nature of the difference to be specified in the instructions, such as the triangle, duo-trio and same-different protocols, it is usually assumed that the decision rule used by the subject in order to generate an answer involves the comparison of the relative sensory distances between the samples. However, there is evidence that an alternative cognitive strategy, the β-strategy, involving the absolute categorization of the sensations could be used by the subject when performing these protocols. This paper introduces the characteristics of this alternative strategy by discussing its statistical power (higher than the traditional strategies) and by describing means of investigating which strategy is used by the subject during an experiment as well as illustrating the experimental conditions that might facilitate the use of this particular decision rule.

Notizen: The perception of astringency and basic taste in mixtures and their interaction effects were investigated by two procedures. In Experiment 1, focused and nonfocused testing procedures were compared using mixtures of low and high concentrations of alum and basic taste solutions. Both procedures yielded taste and astringency intensities that were modality-dependent. Nonfocused testing was used in Experiment 2 to investigate the interactions of astringent phenolic (tannic acid) and nonphenolic (alum) compounds with each basic taste. Sweetness of sucrose increased with increased concentration with or without alum or tannin present. Changes in salty, bitter, and sour taste intensities were modality-dependent. Astringency either remained unchanged or decreased with the addition of sucrose, sodium chloride, citric acid, or caffeine depending upon the taste concentration. Bitterness of tannin and alum at high concentrations was suppressed by the addition of sucrose, sodium chloride, or citric acid; sourness also decreased in the presence of sucrose or sodium chloride as well as a high level of caffeine.

Notizen: Principal component similarity (PCS) analysis was used to evaluate judge performance from a wine competition. Data were analyzed for five international judges and seven wine makers, for 42 white, 30 red and 25 specialty wines, using a 20-point quality scoring system. Principal similarity plots were used to group judges according to judging 'style’ and to identify outliers, for each wine category. Judge groupings were consistent when three different references were used; however, the most interpretable PCS plot was obtained when the overall mean-judge-score was used as the reference. Results from PCS were compared to principal component analysis (PCA). PCS analysis allowed the information from all significant principal components to be graphically represented in two dimensions and was more successful in classifying judges than plots based on the first three principal components. The technique of PCS is an important complement to existing methodologies, and can provide wine competition coordinators with an objective technique for judge evaluation and selection.

Notizen: Anecdotal evidence suggests that astronauts’ perceptions of foods in space flight may differ from their perceptions of the same foods on Earth. Fluid shifts toward the head experienced in space may alter the astronauts’ sensitivity to odors and tastes, producing altered perceptions. Our objective was to determine whether head-down bed rest, which produces similar fluid shifts, would produce changes in sensitivity to taste, odor or trigeminal sensations. Six subjects were tested three times prior to bed rest, three times during bed rest and two times after bed rest to determine their threshold sensitivity to the odors isoamylbutyrate and menthone, the tastants sucrose, sodium chloride, citric acid, quinine and monosodium glutamate, and to capsaicin. Thresholds were measured using a modified staircase procedure. Self-reported congestion was also recorded at each test time. Thresholds for monosodium glutamate where slightly higher during bed rest. None of the other thresholds were altered by bed rest.

Notizen: The effect of liking, brand and price label on purchase intention were studied on crisp snacks in branded, supermarket own label and economy form. Unlabeled assessment segregated the products into differing levels of liking which did not correspond to marketed price and brand location. Level of liking dominated purchase intention under partial label (price or brand alone) and full label (price with brand) conditions. Relative and derived purchase intention measures gave clearer label effects with significance for brand and price. Consumers who professed higher price awareness were more influenced by price, but those professing brand as a main purchase intention reason gave more weight to liking. Results from analysis of purchase intention and degree of liking measures according to private body conscious level were inconclusive.

Notizen: We compare the sensory profiles of six dark chocolates done by two types of juries: some trained juries and an untrained jury. Six laboratories, each one made up of 10 to 15 judges, are regarded as trained juries since the assessors were well trained before the evaluation of the products. The second type of jury is composed of only one panel of 29 untrained assessors and this jury is named the untrained jury. Fourteen attributes were evaluated and analyses of variance have been carried out by attribute to compare the sensory profiles of the six chocolates done by the trained juries and by the untrained jury. These analyses of variance show that the two types of juries give similar sensory profiles and that the few differences are mainly due to different ways of using the scale.

Notizen: Consumers unfamiliar with passion-fruit juice were presented with 24 computer generated package images on which six packaging factors (background color, picture, information, brand, language and shape) had been manipulated and asked to give scores for six expected sensory attributes (sweetness, pureness, sharpness, refreshing, freshness, naturalness) and liking. Significant effects were obtained for each attribute, with background color and information being the most important. Consumers varying in Need For Cognition (NFC) were affected differently by the investigated features of the package. High NFC individuals used less of the packaging factors than low NFC subjects did.

Notizen: The aim of the study was to determine how those texture attributes that elderly people find difficult to eat are related to their preferences for different modifications of carrot textures. This study was conducted with same methods in Finland and in the United Kingdom (UK). Trained sensory panels in both countries described sensory profiles of a range of carrot samples with same glossary of texture terms. The texture of carrot samples was manipulated using different preparation and cooking methods. Based on the Principal Component Analysis (PCA), boiled and puréed samples were perceived as soft, wet, pulpy and smooth, whereas raw samples were dry, brittle, rough, crispy and crunchy. Two age groups were used for the consumer tests: a young adult group aged 23 to 40 years, mean 32 (Finland) and 33 (UK) and an elderly group aged over 60 years, mean 75 (Finland) and 76 (UK). Both the elderly and young adult respondents considered samples as difficult to eat if they needed a long chewing time, were crunchy, hard, brittle, dry, rough or sharp, such as raw slices and coarsely grated samples. On the other hand, slimy, wet, smooth, soft and pulpy samples, such as boiled carrots and purée, were considered as easy-to-eat. The young adults liked more difficult textures such as rough, crispy, crunchy and hard than did the elderly respondents, but the easiest textures were not liked by either age group. Subjects with dental deficiencies liked easier textures more than those fully dentate.

The samples of Tannat were differentiated from Cabernet and Merlot samples and their aroma profile was characterized by secondary and tertiary descriptors of: berry (blackcurrant), dried fruit (prune), resinous (oak), spicy (liquorice) and microbiological (yeasty).

Notizen: If a chi-squared analysis were to be performed to determine whether preferences were significant in a paired preference test, the appropriate expected frequencies in the analysis would represent those that would occur should the consumers have no preference. One way of determining these ‘no preference’frequencies, for a particular test situation, would be to note the preference responses obtained when the stimuli were putatively identical. Over 2000 consumers were given paired preference tests in which the stimuli were putatively identical. Response conditions and consumer groups were varied and the proportions of preference and no preference responses were noted. In a preliminary experiment, further research was seen to be justified when for putatively identical stimuli, judges did not exclusively express lack of preference; many expressed a preference for one or other of the stimuli. Further experiments were conducted using a written response condition and putatively identical potato chips (potato crisps) as stimuli. Using a single ‘no preference’option, variation in the placement of this option at either first, second or third place on the response sheet had no significant effect on the response frequencies. The proportion of ‘no preference’responses was approximately 30% in all cases. A previously reported 40-20-40 distribution was not always confirmed. The experiment was repeated with Korean consumers; these had fewer ‘no preference’responses. Deriving preferences from hedonic scales, rather than having judges respond to preference options, increased the proportion of ‘no preference’responses, with American judges still having more than Korean judges. Yet there are logical objections to extracting preference data from hedonic scales. Increasing the number of ‘no preference’options to two or three, had the effect of increasing the number of ‘no preference’responses up to as much as approximately 60%. Extending the results to Koreans, using two ‘no preference’options, it was seen that only the judges in an anonymous response condition had significantly fewer ‘no preference’responses than Americans. The use of these response frequencies as expected frequencies in chi squared analyses was illustrated, after adjustments for counterbalancing.

Notizen: The influence of thickening agent (0 and 7g/L), mechanical treatment (low and high) and flavoring agent concentration (2.2 to 63.2 μL/kg) on texture, taste and aroma of low fat stirred yogurts was investigated through sensory profiling by a panel of ten subjects trained on 13 attributes. Two assessment conditions were used: either in the presence or in the absence of olfactory perception (nostrils closed with nose clips). Sensory differences were greater for texture than for the other perception modalities. Olfactory perception enhanced yogurt astringency. If both thickener addition and mechanical treatment influenced texture attributes and rheology, the second factor had the strongest effect. Texture attributes were highly correlated with rheological parameters. Increasing flavoring agent concentration tended to decrease thickness and the addition of thickening agent depressed green apple notes and sweet taste, suggesting texture/flavor interactions.

Notizen: The objective of study was to assess the influence of the knowledge of color and brand name on consumer response to tomato purees. From focus group interviews it was found that taste and odor of fresh tomato were the most important drivers of consumer choice. To quantify that information a questionnaire was developed and it was submitted to fifty consumers of tomato puree. The questionnaires answers confirmed those coming from the focus group, although same discrepancies were found with those derived from the consumer test. Results showed that color and brand name seemed to be more important than taste and odor of fresh tomato, in fact those attributes, when consumers were tasting samples, affected not only hedonic judgments but sensory perception as well. Finally physico-chemical parameters derived from instrumental measurements have been compared to sensory data by means of PCA in order to validate the consumers’assessment of sensory attributes of tomato puree.

Notizen: Spices and condiments have been considered virtually indispensable in the culinary art. The quality of spices varies depending on the region of cultivation, climatic conditions and storage history. In the present study, coriander from 8 regions of India, labeled as R1 to R8, were examined for sensory quality by conducting threshold test, time-intensity study and flavor profiling. Principal component analysis (PCA) was carried out to group the samples. Threshold values ranged from 0.010 to 0.035% with R7 showing lower values for threshold (0.010%) followed by R8 (0.020%). Higher intensity of aroma of R7 and R8 was further confirmed by more of lingering aroma as shown by time intensity study. Flavor profiling by quantitative descriptive analysis showed that the coriander samples from different regions did not differ significantly (P± 0.05) in almost all attributes except for spicy aroma. Mapping of samples using PCA technique showed that the samples occupied different quadrants based on the intensity of attributes. Sample R7 and R8 were found to be grouped close together, and R5 and Reformed another group.

Notizen: The influence of bite size on sensory mouthfeel and afterfeel sensations was explored in two studies in which single bites of vanilla custard desserts were varied from itollmL (study 1) and in which series of five bites of two different custard desserts were presented consecutively (study 2). In single bites, sensations of perceived creaminess were enhanced with size whereas sensations of astringency and temperature were suppressed. Bite size also affected perceived thickness, but the direction of the effects varied with custard desserts. With multiple bites, creaminess sensations continued to increase, whereas other sensations were unaffected. Switching to a second series of bites of another vanilla custard dessert showed larger sensory effects, especially on astringency sensations but also to a lesser extent on sensations of thickness and fatty afterfeel. Single and multiple bite results are discussed in terms of possible peripheral mechanisms. Switching results are discussed in terms of possible central sensory contrast mechanisms.

Notizen: Mesquite (Prosopis sp.) is a fast-growing tree that produces abundant amounts of pods. Although these pods were once part of the diet of Southwest Native Americans, little is known today regarding the acceptability of mesquite flour. We standardized a recipe using mesquite flour with a commercially available ready-to-eat cereal product and tested the acceptance of the product with Native American participants (n=84). Participants were asked to complete a food acceptability survey and a food action rating survey to determine taste sensory perception and expected frequency of consumption. Although participants were significantly more likely (P= 0.008) to prefer the cereal without mesquite than with the mesquite added, participants reported favorable acceptability with the cereal, both with and without mesquite flour added. The results of the FACT food frequency survey were positive for both the product with mesquite added and without, with no significant difference (P= 0.07) between the two. These data support the potential for mesquite to be reincorporated as an acceptable ingredient in modern diets of Native Americans.

Notizen: Oral sensory evaluation of caramel texture was conducted using six texture terms and results were compared to instrumental testing of texture. Trained panelists (n = 11) evaluated 6 caramel formulations by descriptive analysis. Mean texture values indicated that a slight increase in sweetened condensed skim milk and vegetable fat content (1% w/w at a 2:1 ratio) significantly decreased stickiness (P≤ 0.05). Decreasing corn syrup dextrose equivalent (DE) decreased stickiness and increased hardness (P≤ 0.05). Pearson correlation coefficients revealed that stickiness to teeth while chewing, toothpacking, and tooth adhesiveness were highly correlated with one another (P≤ 0.05). Sensory hardness, cohesiveness, and number of chews were correlated with the rheological properties of storage modulus and viscosity, while stickiness was correlated with probe tack force (P≤ 0.05). Such correlations show that fundamental rheological and tack force measurements can be used to help determine molecular mechanisms for sensory texture and stickiness.

Notizen: We show that adding replications in replicated difference tests results in larger power and smaller variance when the number of assessors is fixed. On the other hand, when the number of total assessments is fixed, the power usually decreases and the variability increases whenever replications are considered instead of different assessors. The appropriate numbers of assessor needed to gain the same power and variability, respectively, when replications are used will be given. It is shown that the number of assessors might indeed be reduced, but this has to be paid for by an increasing total number of assessments. We show that two key models, namely the mixture binomial and a corrected version of the Beta-binomial model, are quite similar with respect to the properties of interest. We provide tables from which, according to her/his requirements, the investigator might find an appropriate setting with respect to the number of assessors and replications.

Notizen: The definition of “flavor” is a term that appears to vary from one area to the next. A survey was conducted on 140 individuals in various areas of specialization (agriculture, food science, sensory evaluation, and the chemical senses) to see what sensations are thought to be involved in “flavor,” as well as whether there were any differences in definitions across groups. The results demonstrate that while a fairly stable definition of the term does exist, there is some difference in what different groups of expertise mean when they refer to “flavor.”

Notizen: This paper presents the author's approach to synthesizing useful direction from product testing when the stimuli are not systematically varied. The approach presented here comprises a research design and data analysis strategy, rather than a conventional product optimization with subsequent validation. The design steps comprise stimulus selection, attribute selection, and product evaluation. The data analysis comprises univariate modeling to show how sensory attributes drive overall liking, reduction of the matrix to factor scores for multivariate modeling, and then the creation of an integrated product model. The outcome is a set of factor scores that can be translated to sensory attributes and in turn to target products.

Notizen: A number of commonly consumed fruits and vegetables (e.g., kiwifruit, pineapple and taro) cause oral irritation, and there is anecdotal evidence that this influences the acceptability of such products. In each of these foods, oral irritation is produced by free crystalline calcium oxalate (raphides). The psychophysics of the mechanical oral irritation caused by raphides was studied in two experiments using a model system based on kiwifruit. In the first experiment, the location of irritant sensations and perceived intensity of the irritation caused by suspensions of raphides were determined using a ten-member trained sensory panel. Stinging and numbing were found to increase significantly with increasing concentrations of raphides. Stinging occurred principally on the tongue as well as in the throat and numbing principally on the tongue. The number of oral areas irritated was shown to increase with raphide concentration and to decrease over a 60-min period. In the second experiment, sugars (fructose, sucrose, glucose and inositol), acids (citric, malic and quinic) and an enzyme (actinidin) were added to the model to examine interactions between these chemical stimuli and the mechanical action of the raphides. Addition of acids to the model was shown to enhance irritation in addition to increasing sourness and suppressing sweetness. The addition of actinidin had no significant effects on irritation or tastes. It is suggested that acidity may aggravate irritation at low raphide concentration, but beyond a critical level of mechanical irritation the presence of acids has little additional effect. These results provide the first detailed data of the psychophysics of mechanical oral irritation in food, and have important implications for producing foods with lower levels of irritation and increased acceptability.

Notizen: A standardized descriptive language for skim milk powder and dried dairy ingredients was developed. The lexicon was initially identified from a large sample set of dried dairy ingredients (138). A highly trained descriptive panel (n = 14) refined terms and identified references. Dried dairy ingredients (36) were then evaluated using the developed language. Twenty-one descriptors were identified for dried dairy ingredients. Seventeen flavors and tastes were identified in skim milk powders (27) with nine flavors/tastes observed in all skim milk powders. Dried dairy ingredients were differentiated using the language (P〈0.05). There were flavors common to all dried dairy ingredients while other flavors were specific to particular products.

Notizen: Sensory properties and consumer perception of 2 ‘home-made’and 4 commercial dairy ice creams were examined. Conventional profiling by a trained panel found that most samples differed significantly in all attributes, but distinction of ‘home-made’from commercial products was limited to few attributes. Principal component analysis separated the ‘home-made’products from the commercial ones mainly on the basis of differences in appearance, aroma, creamy flavors and textural attributes. A consumer group (n=105) recorded preconception of ‘home-made’ice cream acceptance, then received the product samples, in unlabeled condition, for assessment of degree of liking (DOL) and for identification as ‘home-made’or commercial. Internal preference mapping of the DOL ratings showed that consumers were more closely grouped around samples which had higher intensities of certain attributes. Higher ‘denseness’, ‘vanilla’aroma and ‘buttery’flavor, were associated with more liking for commercial products. The ‘home-made’high fat sample, although liked, tended to be grouped with commercial products. More marked textural attributes of ‘ice crystals’and ‘breakage’aided identification of the low-fat ‘home-made’formulation, which was less liked overall. Overall, differences between the ‘home-made’and commercial samples were small but consumer perception of the term ‘home-made’was viewed favorably for dairy ice cream.

Notizen: An established disparity between hedonic scales and just-about-right (JAR) measures, important for product development procedures, was examined for sweetness in lemonade by consumer groups divided on the basis of health concern level and consumption patterns related to sweet foods, regular and diet drinks and ‘healthy eating’. The disparity was demonstrated by all subgroups in that the JAR scale identified a lower sucrose concentration as nearest ‘just right’compared to that identified as ‘most liked’by the hedonic scale. Regression analysis predicted lower optimum sweetness for the JAR than the hedonic scale. For subjects who completed both tests the disparity was significantly different from zero. Trends of differences in response on both scales and for the disparity according to health concern and consumption patterns were demonstrated graphically. Few of these effects were statistically significant, but the differences in disparity level could justify market segmentation of drink products with different sucrose levels.

Notizen: This paper presents results on consumer attitudes towards healthy soup, using conjoint analysis, executed on the Internet. The results show moderate interest in new ideas for the total panel, but reveal three concept-response segments. The first segment responds to nutrition and functional ingredients. The second segment responds to packaging and convenience. The third segment responds to taste and ingredients. Statistical analysis confirms the idea that they represent different ‘mind-sets’. The segmentation based on psychographic variables is a useful tool to identify the features of the next generation “healthy soups” and to design custom products on the basis of consumer requirements.

Notizen: A statistical study was performed on the scores awarded by a taste panel over a full Roncal cheese manufacturing season. The panel evaluations were part of a quality control program carried out on that cheese under the auspices of the Appellation of Origin for Roncal cheese by panelists previously trained and qualified as proficient. Analysis of variance and factor analysis were performed to examine variability for the different attributes and the influence of such factors as cheesemaking plant and the manufacturing season and also to monitor panel reliability. The results indicated that the attributes associated with the descriptor “characteristic” had the highest variability; these attributes were characteristic odor, characteristic aroma, characteristic texture, characteristic flavor, and characteristic aftertaste. Cheesemaking plant was the factor that had the greatest effect on variability. Factor analysis and exploratory box plot data analysis were used to detect discrepancies between individual assessors and the rest of the panelists.

Notizen: Different Spanish unifloral honeys (eucalyptus, sunflower, rosemary, thyme, lavender, citrus, anise, quercus, and lemon blossom) and one multifloral honey were studied by Free-Choice Profiling (FCP) analysis. Generalized Procrustes Analysis (GPA) applied to the FCP data allowed discrimination between samples and provided information on the attributes responsible for the differences observed. The honeys had significantly different sensory characteristics. Textural attributes were the predominant factor in discriminating between samples, and appearance (color included) was also correlated with GPA dimensions to a lesser extent.

Notizen: This paper deals with responses to concept elements for grapefruit juice using hybrid conjoint analysis. Sensory-based concept elements perform as well (and as poorly) as do nonsensory-based concept elements. Concept-response segmentation analysis revealed three distinct groups, oriented to sweet taste, nonsweet taste, and color/appearance, respectively. Response patterns of segments are not polarized. What one segment likes most the other segment may simply accept to a moderate degree. This pattern differs from what typically happens with actual products. The segments differ in the way that they process the information in a concept, based upon response time as a separate dependent measure. Sensory-based concept elements may act as gatekeepers to assure respondents that the product is acceptable, and thus may shorten the search for additional information. In contrast, for products and sensory-preference segmentation, sensory attributes typically act as Drivers of LikingTM, rather than as gatekeepers.

Notizen: The range of scores elicited by a structured, an unstructured and a ‘labels-only’version of the 9-point hedonic scale were compared using consumers from USA, Japan and Korea. It was found that the unstructured scale elicited a wider range of scores for American and Japanese consumers. After correction for hedonic ranges, it was found that Japanese had smaller ranges of scores on all three scales, although the effect was less pronounced for the unstructured scale. The Korean consumers were the exception. Their ranges were less than Americans but their ranges on the unstructured scale did not increase. The results were discussed in terms of the effects of inhibition of use of categories by the scale labels, effects of translation from the English, psychophysical style and order effects.

Notizen: Three brands of ready to serve mango drinks namely ‘Frooti’, ‘Real’and ‘Slice’that are available in the market were used for sensory evaluation along with the vacuum dried reconstituted mango powder drink. Mango powder was produced from mango pulp of ‘Totapuri’variety with addition of Maltodextrin, Glycerol monostearate and Tri calcium phosphate at rate of 0.62, 0.015 and 0.015 kg per kg dry mango solid, respectively. These ingredients were added for getting a nonsticky free flowing powder. The pulp along with the ingredients was dried in a vacuum drier at 70 ± 2C and 710–750 mm Hg vacuum. Fuzzy logic analysis was used for finding out the best of the three market mango drinks. BrimA index (a criterion for acceptance of fruit juice) and total solid (kg per kg drink) of the reconstituted mango drink was adjusted based on the BrimA index and total solid values of the best market drink. The reconstituted mango drink satisfied the quality criteria set for ‘mouth feel’but not the color, smell and taste.

Notizen: There are some theoretical difficulties in the philosophy and methodology of sensory difference and preference tests. The difficulties lie in the assumption that the subjects have the same response ability, which is in conflict with psychological ideas about the processes of perception and decision. A Bayesian approach may overcome these difficulties by treating the parameter of proportion as a random variable. This paper presents a Bayesian approach for analysis of data from such sensory tests.

Notizen: Coffee served at temperatures recommended by the hospitality and food literatures for brewing and holding are above thermal pain and damage thresholds. Yet, consumers do not report pain or damage on drinking coffee at such temperatures. To investigate this discrepancy, the temperature of hot coffee before and during sipping was investigated for 18 subjects. Coffee temperature was continuously monitored by thermocouples in the cup, in the coffee bolus in the oral cavity and on the surface of the tongue. There was minimal cooling as the coffee entered the mouth from the cup, yet the coffee temperature was still above threshold for inducing burn damage. It is hypothesized that during drinking, the bolus of hot coffee is not held in the mouth long enough to heat the epithelial surfaces sufficiently to cause pain or tissue damage.

Notizen: The application of sensory methodology for measuring deodorizing effect of an air conditioner equipped with electric plasma was introduced. Deodorizing effect was measured using chemical and sensory methods at different time (0, 30 and 60 min) and mode (control, blowing and cooling) of an air conditioner. Smoke from a roll of cigarette in a closed room was used as a source of odor and the concentrations of acetic acid and ammonia were measured as odorous chemical components. As one of the sensory methods triangle test was used and as a first step to obtain deodorizing effects by triangle test, the threshold of each panelist was obtained as the log dilution ratio of odor concentration at which the difference from odorless air was detected. The odor concentration at each time and mode was calculated using the threshold of the panel and the deodorizing effect was obtained on the basis of the odor concentration. In addition to a triangle test, scaling methods such as category scaling or magnitude estimation were used to measure deodorizing effect of an air conditioner. Deodorizing effects by scaling methods were calculated based on odor intensity with time at each mode. The regression analysis was done between the efficacy of deodorizing effect by sensory test and those by acetic acid and ammonia, the R2 values of the regression equations for triangle test, category scale, and magnitude estimation were 0.84, 0.72 and 0.69, respectively. Deodorizing effect by triangle test explained the decrease of acetic acid and ammonia better than those by category scaling or magnitude estimation while high cost and time consuming labor involved in triangle tests reduced the merit. The results of this study demonstrated that various sensory methods could be used to measure deodorizing effect of air conditioners and further researches on fast and reliable methods are needed to establish the official procedures.

Notizen: A focus group study was performed to investigate the sensory vocabulary used by consumers of this product, together with general habits of its consumption. A total of 59 housewives distributed among six groups from three different cities in Argentina participated in the study. Differences in the groups across cities were small. Four groups would have been sufficient to generate the information and four was an adequate number of samples to aid in descriptor usage. The total number of descriptors used by the 6 groups were: appearance 65, color 39, aroma 44, flavor 50 and texture 70. A list of the most frequently mentioned positive and negative descriptors is presented. There were contradictions between the recall of reasons for consuming a sample and the sensory description of the same sample. The focus group method allowed obtaining the general profile of an ideal mayonnaise: pale yellow, shiny, with a mild flavor of lemon and egg, creamy in texture and easy to spread.

Notizen: In the present paper, two indices, agreement coefficient and reliability coefficient, are introduced and proposed to measure quality of ratings data given by a sensory descriptive panel. Agreement coefficient describes variation of ratings for a single target (product), whereas reliability coefficient reflects discrimination ability of a descriptive panel for a sample of products. The two indices, which profoundly describe inherent characteristics of ratings data, are based on classical reliability theory and recent advances in psychological measurement. In the paper, estimates and tests for the two indices are provided. Confidence intervals for the indices are derived. A space with the two indices as dimensions, which is referred as rating quality space, gives visual presentation of performances of a descriptive panel or individual panelists. Numerical examples illustrate the use and interpretation of the indices.

Notizen: Anderson's statistic, which compares distributions of ranks, is generalized to cope with tied rankings. A simple example is given to illustrate the calculations involved. In market research work it is often important to compare distributions as well as mean values. Comparison of distributions can indicate either market segmentation or product variability.

Notizen: Asian white radish processed foods are commonly consumed in Japan and Korea and are increasingly available in many Western countries. The major flavor constituent of Asian white radish, 4-methylthio-3-trans-butenyl isothiocyanate (MTBITC), was extracted as an oil and added in varying concentrations to an unflavored cracker biscuit. Untrained taste panels of Japanese, Korean and Australian nationals were presented with treated biscuits and their concentration preference for MTBITC determined. The taste preferences (degree of liking) of the Japanese and Koreans differed markedly with the Japanese preferring biscuits containing 110 μmole MTBITC/100 g while the Koreans preferred 〈 50 μmole/100 g (the lowest concentration tested). The difference is attributed to the Korean use of Asian white radish in highly spiced foods compared to the Japanese use without the addition of strongly flavored ingredients. The Australians also preferred 〈50 μmole/100 g but this was probably due to unfamiliarity with eating white radish.

Notizen: Forty pure chemical compounds representing a wide range of odors, were evaluated by a panel of 240 consumers. These compounds were matched with a list of 40 common descriptors. The results were analyzed by Correspondence Analysis and Hierarchical Clustering. This original approach enhanced the study by providing a layman's point of view and thereby shedding light on the theories of olfactory perception. The level of odor confusion by consumers was also studied. Consumers pointed out three principal odorant directions which we called “ citrus”, “ sweet” and “ heavy” . Aniseed and garlic odors were the most isolated notes. The association among compounds or odors was explained by semantic processes and by the odorant products consumers used which make up their odorant domain.

Notizen: This paper presents a set of analyses on sensory directional attributes used to rate experimentally designed pizza products. Consumers may or may not know the ‘optimal’ sensory level of attributes for pizza, so that the usefulness of the sensory directional varies by attribute. Furthermore, the sensory magnitude of each sensory directional attribute varies, as shown by the slope (B) relating the two attributes (Sensory Magnitude = A + B (Directional Rating)). The study incorporated sensory directionals into evaluation of products varied according to an experimental design. The optimal product emerging from the design does not necessarily exhibit a sensory directional profile where all attributes are ‘on target’, nor does a product whose sensory attributes are all on ‘target’ exhibit the highest level of liking.

Notizen: Cluster analysis, consonance analysis, principal component analysis (PCA) and the GRAPES program (Schlich 1994) were compared for the evaluation of panel performance. Ten judges evaluated 25 Merlot wines for 24 color, aroma and flavor attributes. Cluster analysis grouped similar judges. PCA identified judges according to their attribute use. Consonance analysis determined a numerical index for attribute agreement and the GRAPES program compared judges in their use of the scale, reliability, discrimination and disagreement. Three of the four techniques provided a graphical representation of similarities and differences between judges. Methodologies were best used in conjunction with one another. Ultimately the application of these tools will serve to improve the quality of sensory evaluations.

Notizen: This study examines the effect of beer assessment training on verbal and nonverbal performance. Two groups of subjects are asked to sort, match, and describe a set of 12 beers (6 supplemented and 6 commercial beers). Subjects from the first group are enrolled in a beer-training program. Subjects in the second group are untrained beer consumers. Results show that although both groups perform the matching task equally well, trained subjects performed better on supplemented beers and untrained subjects on commercial beers. Examination of the generated vocabulary shows that 44% of the terms are common to trained and untrained subjects. However, an analysis of the terms’ efficiency shows that whereas for trained subjects, precise terms are more efficient than intensity or hedonic terms; the opposite is observed for untrained subjects. This suggests that it is not the term itself that is important but the common reference associated to it.
