    Notes: We have developed a method for imaging magnetic data collected for mineral exploration to yield the following structural information: depth, model type (structural index) and susceptibility. The active nature of mineral exploration data requires we derive the structural information from a robust quantity: we propose that the first- or second-order analytic-signal amplitude is suitably stable. The procedure is to normalize the analytic-signal amplitude by the peak value and then use non-linear inversion to estimate the depth and the structural index for each anomaly. In our field example, different results are obtained depending on whether we inverted for the first- or second-order analytic-signal amplitude. This is probably because the two-dimensional contact, thin sheet or horizontal cylinder models we have assumed are not appropriate. In cases such as these, when our model assumptions are not correct, the results should not be interpreted quantitatively, but they might be useful for giving a qualitative indication of how the structure might vary.With a priori information, it is possible to assume a model type (i.e. set the structural index) and generate estimates of the depth and susceptibility. These data can then be gridded and imaged. If a contact is assumed, the susceptibility contrast is estimated; for the dike model, the susceptibility-thickness is estimated; for the horizontal cylinder, the susceptibility-area is estimated. To emphasize that the results are dependent on our assumed model, we advocate prefixing any derived quantity by the term ‘apparent’.

    Notes: Interpretation of an anomalous magnetic response involves determining the parameters that characterize the source of the anomaly. The depth to the top of the structure is a parameter that is commonly sought, and the Source Parameter ImagingTM (SPITM) method is one way of determining this depth estimate. One advantage of the SPI method is that the depths can be displayed on an image. Typically there can be one image for an assumed contact (fault) model and another image for an assumed dipping thin sheet (dike) model. The depth estimate obtained will depend on the model assumed. An improvement to the source parameter imaging method extends the method to horizontal cylinders and at the same time allows the most appropriate model to be determined automatically. This model can be displayed on an image and the correct depth estimate for each anomaly can also be determined. The depth estimates can therefore be summarized on one map independent of an assumed model. The images generated from synthetic and field data show that the improved SPI method makes the task of interpreting magnetic data significantly easier.

    Notes: The nth-order moments of the electromagnetic impulse response are useful for interpreting electromagnetic data. We have derived an analytic expression for the half-order moment of a conductive half-space. By inverting this expression, the measured half-order moment can be used to estimate an apparent conductivity of the ground. The first-order moment can also be used to estimate the half-space conductivity. A sensitivity analysis indicates that for an airborne EM configuration, the half-order moment will be most sensitive to material in the top 26–48 m, while the first-order moment will be sensitive to deeper material (down to depths between 66 and 127 m).

    Notes: A Michelson interferometer using a 5-mW He–Ne laser can either be used in a photodiode detector mode to resolve transient fringe shifts (approximately-less-than)10−4 fringe or in a streak mode to obtain entire nanosecond resolved density profiles in a single shot. Extreme sensitivity is achieved by avoiding most noise sources. The effects of plasma light and of ray deflection due to density gradients are compensated for by the use of a lens, stop, and filter combination. Vibration induced signals are nearly eliminated by the use of feedback stabilization. A differential light detector system which subtracts signals at opposite sides of a fringe protects against laser noise and other spurious signals while doubling the sensitivity. In the streak mode a cylindrical lens beam expander allows utilization of nearly all of the laser light.

    Notes: We report the homodyne detection of phase modulation sidebands induced on a laser beam by a coherently bunched electron beam. This provides a sensitive and nonperturbing measurement of complex Fourier time series components of the electron density. A proof-of-principle measurement of the microwave frequency component of electron density in a crossed-field device, which agrees well with a calculation of the same quantity, is reported.

    Notes: Rapid organelle transport was studied by computer- and video-enhanced microscopy in the region of localized lesions in single myelinated axons of Xenopus laevis. Localized lesions were created that were either impermeable to small ions in the bathing medium or were permeable to agents with molecular weights up to 10,000. Providing the axons were bathed in a suitable “internal” medium, organelle transport continued to within a few micrometers of the lesion whether the lesion was permeable or not. Organelles undergoing anterograde and retrograde transport reversed their direction of transport on reaching the lesion. In preparations with lesions that were permeable, nonhydrolyzable analogs of ATP inhibited normally directed and reversed organelle transport. In permeable preparations, vanadate and EDTA inhibited retrograde and reversed retrograde transport at different intra-axonal concentrations; anterograde and reversed anterograde transport were also differentially inhibited. Anterograde and retrograde organelle transport were also shown to be inhibited at different intraaxonal concentrations of vanadate and EDTA.The results provide evidence for the existence of two different axonal transport mechanisms in myelinated axons. The two mechanisms can account for the normally directed and reversed transport of individual organelles.

    Notes: Abstract. A dominant induced mutation in the mouse, tightly associated with a reciprocal chromosomal translocation between Chrs 4 and 17, causes abnormal head tossing and circling behavior (the translocation induced circling mutation, Tim). Affected mice develop an unusual anterior subcapsular cataract that appears after birth and is progressive. The most likely explanation for the phenotypic observations is that the translocation breakpoint disrupted a gene or its regulation. Although the Mos protooncogene is located close to the translocation breakpoint and transgenic mice that overexpress Mos demonstrate cataracts and circling behavior, there were no gross changes in the Mos gene or in its level of expression. The morphological changes observed in the lens resemble those seen in some human congenital cataract syndromes.
