    Notes: An early segregation of germ cells and migration through a germ track into the gonad does not occur in the albino rat. The germ cells are produced only from the peritoneum of the genital region and their earliest formation is coincident with the thickening of the coelomic epithelium to form the genital ridge. This takes place eleven days after insemination in embryos of approximately 18 somites. Germ cells continue to form from the peritoneum during the early development of the gonad. The peritoneum of this region also produces mesenchyme, smaller cells of the gonads, and the germinal epithelium.The argument for the specific character of the germ cells in vertebrates and their continuity from the egg is based largely upon assumption, and not upon substantial observations, and must be discarded. Germ-cell origin is a problem of cellular differentiatio, and not of early segregation.

    Notes: Painted turtles, gopher tortoises, and terrapins were fed on various mixtures of sand, salts, dextrin, casein, cod-liver oil, wheat, eggs, lettuce, and meal worms. Each individual was weighted weekly for about a year and then killed for analysis, the water, ash, nitrogen, and fat being determined. Some individuals increased in weight as much as 75 per cent, others lost weight. Judged by growth and chemical analyses, the food requirements of chelonians, as representative poikilothermal vertebrates toward nutritive substances (including vitamines) are similar to those of homoiothermal animals.

    Notes: Of the eggs laid by Fasciolaria about 1 per cent develop into veligers, about 2 per cent more undergo a few cleavage divisions, and about 97 per cent do not divide at all. The 99 per cent that fail to develop normally are ‘swallowed’ by the veligers. This study concerns itself chiefly with the ova that do not divide. Notes on normal development and on the ova that undergo atypical cleavage are included.All of the ova are found to be typical when passed from the ovary. To each ovum one to several sperms become attached at the vegetal pole in the region of a mass of undifferentiated protoplasm - the ‘polar mass.’ A fertilization cone forms in each ovum and a fertilization membrane. In typical development a yolk lobe is formed, the sperm enters in the usual way, and fertilization is completed as in many other mollusks. In 97 per cent of the ova the yolk lobe is not formed and the sperm does not enter. In these cases the wall of the egg nucleus remains intact a long time. The nucleus itself and the ‘polar mass’ sink into the egg and meet at the center. Then the nuclear wall disappears and an atypical diaster is formed. However, cleavage is not begun and the chromosomes form vesicles that remain near the center of the ovum until it is ‘swallowed’ and digested by the veliger.

    Notes: The blood of Perophora viridis is found to contain six types of cells: (1) Green cells, which have green-colored fatty bodies embedded in clear cytoplasm. (2) Orange cells, with orange-colored bodies of unknown composition in the cytoplasm. (3) Colorless berry-like cells, with fluid-filled vesicles in the cytoplasm. (4) Granular amoeboid cells. (5) Compartmental amoeboid cells, which have box-like vacuoles containing brownian granules of a fatty substance. (6) Vesicular, signet-ring type of cell having a single large vacuole. The cytological structure of these cells and their reaction to various dyes are described.An effort has been made to homologize the types of cells found in the blood of other ascidians with those found in Perophora.It is concluded that the variety of colors found in the cells of ascidian blood is due to the varying chemical states of the vanadium-containing chromogen present in the cells.

    Notes: Disintegration in killing agents was studied throughout development. In the unfertilized egg and cleavage stages the death gradient runs from animal to vegetal pole. In the late blastula stage the future dorsal surface and future point of gastrulation show heightened susceptibility. The gastrula has a gradient from anterior to posterior end along its dorsal surface, with a slight reverse gradient around the blastopore; lateral and ventral regions are least susceptible.Before and after the appearance of the neural groove, the dorsal surface shows increased susceptibility with gradient in it from anterior to posterior end. The neural tube is highly susceptible, with a death gradient from anterior to posterior end and a slight reverse gradient at its posterior end.During late stages and in the larva the double gradient is present; death begins at the two ends and progresses backward from head, forward from anus; from the former most rapidly. The least susceptible place is near the posterior end. The posterior reverse gradient is less developed in the lamprey than in other vertebrate embryos, due, probably, to its lack of a tail bud.Assuming that death differences indicate differences in rate of activity, it appears that such differences in activity may be causes and not results of developmental processes, for the development of certain parts (dorsal surface, blastopore, central nervous system) is indicated by heightened activity before it is evident morphologically.

    Notes: The claspers of Centrina are adnate with the pelvic fin and bear a spine as in other Spinacidae. Mustelus canis resembles M. lunulatus rather than M. vulgaris. The claspers of Chiloscyllium end in a pointed spike. Pseudotriakis resembles the Carchariidae. The three North American Atlantic species of the genus Raia are considered, and R. laevis and R. erinacea are placed in the pseudogenus containing R. batis, and a new pseudogenus erected for R. ocellata. A gross and histological account is given of the Cowper's glands of Homo, and they are shown to be homoplastic with clasper glands, similar in structure, arrangement, development, and function.

    Notes: In the golden-mantled ground-squirrel, Callospermophilus, a spatulate glandular area has been noted in the skin of the back. It has been found in the following species: C. l. lateralis, C. l. arizonensis, C. l. caryi, C. l. saturatus, C. l. tescorum, C. c. chrysodeirus, and C. bernardinus. Probably it is common to the genus.The individual glands making up this area are modified and enlarged sudoriparous glands. They are divided into a tightly coiled and branched fundus, a large sinus, and a duct which passes caudad and outward to its exit at the surface.The glands secrete a strongly smelling oil, which is probably left on vegetation and other objects in the animal's environment and serves as a source of information to other members of the species. The glands are more active in spring and summer than in winter. They are stimulated by excitement. While present in both sexes, both adult and juvenile, they are best developed in adult males.Callospermophilus has three anal glands. These have flat-topped, straight-sided nipples which are protruded from the anus if the animal is frightened. A milky substance with a very weak odor can be extruded.

    Notes: The study is divided into three parts. Part I deals with the chromosome number and morphology in the amniotic cells of rabbit embryos. The number of chromosomes has been found essentially constant in amniotic cells of young, but more variable in older embryos. The somatic number is 44. Part II deals with the chromosomes of race crosses (Flemmish Giant X Polish) in which the homologous chromosomes were found to be alike. Part III deals with spermatogenesis. There are forty-four chromosomes in spermatogonia, and twenty-two in primary spermatocytes. The sex chromosomes are of the usual X-Y type.

Some acids induce reversal, others do not.2The duration of reversed action varies with the kind of salt and with the concentration. As the concentration increases, the duration of reversed action increases to a maximum and then decreases to zero.3Bivalent and trivalent cation salts neutralize the effect of monovalent cation salts. The relative amount required varies with the kind of salt used and with the concentration.4The amount of a given salt required to neutralize another salt is not proportional to the concentration of the salt neutralized. Weber's law does not hold.5The results seem to indicate that ciliary reversal is associated with differential adsorption and consequent changes in electric potential, but that there are also other factors involved.

    Notes: A special type of cell, called ‘Lichtzellen’ by Hesse, was found in the photosensitive regions of the earthworm. Wherever the epidermis is most sensitive to light these cells are most abundant. They are found in the epidermis of all segments of the body and also in nerve enlargements of the prostomium and the caudal segment, but the intersegmental and ventral regions of the different segments, except the more distal ones, contain none of them. They are supplied by nerves and each contains a characteristic inner structure, the optic organelle, composed of a large central hyaline structure, the lens, which is surrounded by a dense network of nerve fibrillae, the retinella. In hanging drops the lens was found to focus light in the region of the retinella irrespective of the direction of the rays.These cells are similar in structure and function to the visual cells in leeches. Available data indicate that these cells function as photoreceptors and that the fibrillae of the retinella are the direct receptors of light stimuli.Pigment is not associated with the photoreceptors in a way that suggests direct functional relationship, but there is a subepidermal pigment layer through which pinhole windows admit light along the path of nerves to each of the nerve enlargements containing photoreceptor cells. These windows open in such directions as to determine the direction of withdrawal of the worm.

    Notes: The effect of removal of the liver has been noted in fishes, frogs, and turtles. As in the higher vertebrates, removal of the liver produced a fall in blood sugar and a loss in muscular tone. The lower vertebrates failed to respond to intravenous injections of glucose, as do the birds and mammals. They also fail to respond to maltose or levulose. The liver maintained the blood-sugar level in the lower vertebrates, which is necessary for the maintenance of life.The mechanism of carbohydrate metabolism in the lower vertebrates may be different from that in the higher ones, in that glucose, when injected intravenously, apparently exercises a progressively less beneficial effect on the characteristic hypoglycemic condition which follows the removal of the liver of mammals and cold-blooded vertebrates.

    Notes: This paper reports experiments with Fundulus heteroclitus to modify larval development by means of ultraviolet radiation. Eggs were exposed to radiation at various intervals after fertilization for varying periods of time. The results accord with previous work on fish teratology, and the developmental types obtained are essentially similar to those produced by chemicals, cold, and hybridization. The deviations from normal development occur in the same body regions as do those in other vertebrates whose early development has been modified by the action of radiation (x-rays, radium, etc.).The results of these experiments indicate that there is a non-specificity in susceptibility relations with the production of similar types of monsters for widely different reagents. That these eggs are differentially susceptible to the action of ultraviolet radiation is indicated by the fact that those regions which have the highest metabolic activity when an inhibiting influence is active are the ones most generally affected. Thus modifications of the nervous system, sense organs, circulatory system, tail region, and body axis result, respectively, in the production of varying degrees of cyclopia, inadequate circulation, short, stubby or bent, non-motile tails (some bifid), and anterior twinning.As these modifications may be produced by applying inhibiting influences during the first few minutes after fertilization, it is evident that there is in the egg at this stage some constitutional or physiological basis which determines early differences in susceptibility of its various parts.

    Notes: Webbing of toes or fingers in man is produced by a local arrest of development, causing retention of the normal embryonic webbing. This type of digital fusion involves only the skin, the skeleton being unaffected. The extensor tendons of the toes may sometimes be fused.Webbed digits occur normally in some marsupials, rodents, and insectivores, in a number of lemurs and catarrhines, and in the siamang and gorilla. They also may occur in varying degree in other Primates, notably Hylobates. An analysis of five new pedigrees together with those already published demonstrates that webbing of toes in man may be inherited in either a mendelian or sex-linked manner. In one case this character follows the course of the Y-chromosome.

    Notes: The parasynaptic union of chromosomes associated with the formation of a karyosphere is demonstrated in the spermatocytes of Phanaeus.The twelve V-shaped leptotene threads are polarized with their apices embedded in one plasmosome-like body, their distal ends in another (primary and secondary caps, respectively), and undergo a conjugation of the parasynaptic type. The distal ends of the chromosomes are freed from their attachment in the secondary cap. The six pachytene loops retain their polarized configuration.The basichromatin of the pachytene chromosomes appears ultimately to be withdrawn to form the karyosphere comprising six chromatic bodies within an oxychromatic «plasmosome,» the latter probably derived from the primary cap. The two caps are believed to arise from the chromosomes. The primary cap apparently becomes incorporated again in the chromosomes; the secondary cap, together with linin remnants of the pachytene chromosomes, disintegrates in the nucleus as residual chromatin.In the dissolution of the karyosphere six ring-shaped tetrads emerge arranged in a temporarily connected chain, giving under certain conditions, the misleading impression of twelve components arranged end to end. The entire content of the karyosphere appears to be employed in the formation of the chromosomes; no visible plasmosome remains.

    Notes: Embryological study of bullfrog tadpoles collected from various parts of the United States has shown the existence of local races which differ markedly in regard to the time of occurrence and character of the developmental processes involved in the formation of the definitive testis of the male individuals. Those races in which the gonads of the two sexes are easily distinguished in early larval stages are called differentiated. Other local races show a peculiar gonadic development chiefly affecting the males, the definitive testis sometimes not appearing until near the end of the second year of larval life. Such races are called undifferentiated, because the morphological features of the definitive testes are not established until late. The larvae first develop a peculiar gonad (progonad) which later degenerates and is replaced by the definitive testis. All male animals of the undifferentiated strains exhibit the gonad cycle.The progonad varies among the local frog races in regard to the length of persistence and degree of differentiation attained before undergoing degeneration. Its germ cells may exhibit a typical male maturation cycle ending in degeneration, or the cells may differentiate along both male and female lines or remain sexually neutral.The development and differentiation of the progonad in the various races are described and a detailed account given of the origin of the definitive testis. The problems of sex differentiation and continuity of the Keimbahn in anurans are discussed.

    Notes: The primordial germ cells of urodeles and anurans can occupy comparable positions in the embryo only in very early stages of development, if at all. When first recognizable as reproductive elements, their situation in the two amphibian orders is quite strikingly different.The germ cells first become recognizable in urodeles in the medial edge of the lateral mesoderm; there is no evidence that their position previous to this time is other than mesodermal. In the anura they are entodermal in association during early development; they are finally separated from the dorsal portion of the roof of the archenteron to form a single axial germ-cell cord. No amphibian species studied showed a mode of origin different from that characteristic of its order.The so-called migration of the amphibian germ cells to their definitive situation is interpreted as the result of growth shiftings of related parts. Germ cells do not migrate independently through the tissues. Aberrant or ectopic cells for the most part result from failures or faulty correlations of growth processes. Certain aberrant cells of the caudal portion of the body in urodeles indicate the inclusion of sex elements in the ventral as well as in the lateral mesoderm.

    Notes: The musculature of the ophidian head is a fairly complex structure, due to the specialization of the skull and the peculiar movements and motions made possible by the high degree of streptostylism.This musculature has been derived from the lacertilian type by a splitting and a shifting of the original elemental muscle masses of this group. Most of the muscles are clearly homologous with those of the Lacertilia. Some cannot be homologized by a study of the mature forms.The greatest differences lie in the separation of the muscle masses in the ophidia, as compared with the undivided masses in the Lacertilia. Since the jaw movements of the Lacertilia are rather simple, there is no need for any subdivision or splitting of the jaw muscles, but with the complex movements of the ophidia this becomes necessary.A few of the ophidian muscles appear to be neomorphs, as no key to their origin could be determined by a comparison with lacertilians.

    Notes: In a leech infesting the Alaskan codfish germinal masses in the ovary proliferate secondary groups, comprising about forty cells in which a follicle and central supporting cell early differentiate. Active division results in approximately 500 cells which apparently develop ductules extending to a point on the surface of the egg. Granules of unknown origin then appear in each nurse cell, and are drawn down the ductules into the egg which can now be distinguished. Reasons are given for the belief that the nutritive material is drained from the nurse cells by amoeboid activity of the egg. In early stages the nutritive mateiral forms a loose reticulum which gradually becomes transformed into a more extensive network, persisting until the maturation divisions. In this latest period the follicle and nurse cells, which become shrunken as the ovum enlarges, usually are stripped off and soon disintegrate.

    Notes: The pelvic fins of the ancestors of the Chondrosteoidei possessed a metameric musculature and their skeleton consisted of a large number of metamerically arranged cartilaginous fin-rays, to which were attached osseous lepidotrichia. Evolution has involved the concrescence of separate elements to form the basal cartilage, the proximal end of which forms the girdle of the fin; the loss of a number of the fin-rays, and the atrophy of distal elements of the rays. The adult Chondrosteoidei have retained the primitive fin structure which characterized the elasmobranchs of the Palaeozoic period and which has disappeared in recent forms.

    Notes: On the basis of experimental study and observations on the morphology of the legs of spiders, P. Friedrich described a cutting device within the trochanter which would sever that appendage from the body when the leg was stimulated by injury.A reinvestigation of the problem yielded entirely contrary results. Experiments calculated to induce spontaneous amputation through an automatic reflex in the leg were negative on scorpions, harvestmen, and more than a dozen species of spiders. A detailed morphological study of the skeleton and musculature of the arachnid leg showed that no autotomizing device exists, either in the skeleton or in the arrangement of muscles (as is usually supposed). In all species studied, except the scorpion, severance of the leg from the body occurs most readily at some given point. The point at which severance readily occurs is directly correlated with a definite structural weakness in the skeleton and musculature. The spider itself removes an injured leg by grasping the stump with its mouth-parts. No such injured stump falls off spontaneously or without the application of tension. Scorpions do not autotomize appendages under any stimulation, nor do they show any anatomical weakness in the leg skeleton or musculature.Autotomy as an automatic reflex does not exist in the Arachnida.

    Notes: Amoeba responds to a mechanical shock by a cessation of movement which occurs shortly after the application of the stimulus. The length of the reaction time, the period intervening between application of stimulus and the response, varies inversely with the magnitude of the shock. After stopping Amoeba remains quiescent for a short time, and the length of this period of quiescence varies directly with the magnitude of the shock. A certain amount of time must elapse after a reaction before another can be obtained; during this time the animal reverts to the physiological state which existed prior to the first shock.Partial recovery from the effects of a shock is manifested by a reaction time that is longer than after complete recovery, and a period of quiescence which is shorter. A shock which in itself is too slight to cause a cessation of movement may result in the lack of a response to a heavier one which follows immediately after it, although under other conditions the second shock would have called forth a reaction. If the second shock, however, is made sufficiently heavy, it will bring about a response, despite the effects of the first. This is what would be expected if the reactions take place in accordance with the Weber-Foechner law.

    Notes: The different kinds of scales characteristic of the adult sturgeon are described and the facts of ontogenesis which throw light on the history of these structures are presented.The scales of Acipenser are exclusively mesenchymatous and therefore are not morphologically comparable with the placoid scales of elasmobranchs. Salensky ('80) drew erroneous conclusions as a result of failure to study the earlier stages of ontogenesis. Goodrich ('03) has correctly described the ontogenesis of the lepidotrichia.The original form of ganoid scale was that of an elongated rhomb with a longitudinal crest on its external surface. The various forms of scales of the adult sturgeon have been produced by the differentiation of such a scale by change in size, shape, and the fusion of the different elements.The conclusions are extended to the entire family of Acipenseridae.

The cheek-sacs are invaginations of the buccal mucosa, and their development as diverticula of the vestibulum oris is associated with the establishment of extrinsic muscles, derived from the platysma. The sac is invested by a coat of striated muscle. The epithelial lining of the sac attains a degree of complexity comparable to the epidermis of the skin, except that a stratum lucidum and stratum granulosum are not developed. No glands are developed in the mucous membrane of the sac.

    Notes: Three groups of pure lines of diverse clones of Didinium nasutum were maintained in isolation cultures for 778, 786, and 457 generations, respectively, without exhibiting any decrease in fission rate or any increase in encystment rate or death rate. These lines were supplied with Paramecium caudatum in such numbers that a surplus of food was present at all times.Three other groups of lines of the same clones were established simultaneously and cultured in parallel with the preceding groups, but the food of each of these lines was limited to nine paramecia per line daily. The fission rate of these lines fell to zero and the encystment rate increased to 100 per cent after 155, 165, and 113 generations of culture, respectively. The death rate increased appreciably in these lines prior to encystment.Other groups of pure lines were cultured on a diet limited to six paramecia per line daily. These lines encysted after approximately fifteen generations of culture.This evidence indicates that there is nothing in the nature of a definite life-cycle in Didinium and that diminished vitality and encystment do not result from the passage of generations, but from inadequate and unfavorable cultural conditions-specifically, from in-sufficient food. It shows further that it is possible to induce cycles with reference to encystment in Didinium by limiting the food supply and to vary the length of the cycles by varying the quantity of food.

An older specimen of Echinorhinus is proved to have a spine on a soft papilla; Scymnus has no spine; both have the general features of the Spinacidae. Two species of Cestracion are compared with C. philippi. Mustelus lunulatus lacks the pera and pseudosiphon of M. vulgaris. Dicerobatis has a peculiar scaphus, and the claspers end in a fimbriated manner. Pteroplatea resembles Trygon and Benthobatis and Astrape are both like Torpedo.The species are listed below.

    Notes: Much more information than is available at present must be obtained before the phylogeny of the muscular system in the Teleostei can be worked out satisfactorily. As a step toward the solution of this problem, the present study gives a detailed description of twenty cranial muscles in a number of species belonging to three groups of cypriniform fishes: the Cyprinoids, Cobitoids, and Siluroids.Particular attention is given to the morphological relations of the following muscles: adductor mandibulae, geniohyoideus, levator arcus branchialis, adductor arcus palatini, retractor branchialis dorsalis, interarcualis dorsalis and the trapezius.Comparison is made between corresponding muscles in different members of the three groups of fishes, and various homologies are pointed out between muscles in cypriniform and those in other fishes, especially Amia, Scomber, Perca and Esox.

    Notes: The flagellate, Tetramitus rostratus Perty, appeared in cultures of certain amoebae obtained from the coecum of rats. In a typical life-cycle a cyst, planted in an appropriate medium, gives rise to an amoeba which may divide a number of times, but eventually some of the amoebae transform into flagellates identical with Tetramitus rostratus. These divide frequently through several days, sometimes for weeks or months, and then transform back to amoebae which become encysted.During excystment the smooth cyst wall dissolves. Usually both the amoeboid and flagellate phases pass into a “gel” state during division. A “gel” state sometimes occurs during transformation. The time required for transformations varies from a few minutes to several hours.Many culture media and methods have been tested. In certain cultures the flagellate phase was prolonged for weeks or months. These cultures were characterized by: 1) great variation in size, from minute “dwarfs” to oversized “monsters”; 2) frequent multiple fission; 3) pairing and fusion, and, 4) some evidence for the origin of secondary nuclei from chromidia. In cases of pairing and fusion, the process of maturation and union of nuclei could not be definitely proved, although suggested by the observations.The flagellate phase is more probably the “adult” phase because of its complex organization and possible sexual phenomena. This case is considered an extreme for this type amoeba-flagellate transformation.

    Notes: In the blastula the region of accelerated cell division is on the ventral side of the egg, nearly opposite the site of the future beginning blastopore. The ventral wall of the blastocoele is thicker than the dorsal. In the very early gastrula a new region of accelerated cell division appears in the vicinity of the dorsal lip of the blastopore.A downward movement of material comprising the marginal zone of micromeres and the portion of the wall of the blastocoele immediately above it occurs during all the later blastula stages and continues until this material is carried below the level of the equator and involved in the process of gastrulation. On the dorsal side of the egg, this movement is more rapid than on the ventral side.In the late blastula stage there are evidences of growth in the region of smaller micromeres. In the very late blastula, a vertical groove appears at the dorsal margin of the floor of the blastocoele; this groove is believed to indicate the operation of factors concerned with gastrulation.In connection with the first nuclear division, evidences of cytoplasmic activity leading to the formation of the first cleavage furrow are described. As the blastomeres become smaller, progressive changes take place in the distribution of their cytoplasm.

    Notes: The activities of the larva and the responses and orientations it makes to external stimulation, and the structural organization by which these activities are produced, are described and figured.Existing systematic confusion of M. citrina with other species (M. manhattensis, M. nana, and M. microsiphonica) is cleared. The duration of the period of larval life is found to vary between 5 and 170 minutes. A proportionally small number retain the larval form a longer time. During larval life, periods of swimming movements alternate with periods of inactivity, the latter, at first of momentary duration, becoming longer and longer until activity ceases.No light receptor exists and no response to light is made. A statolith is found in the sensory vesicle, and frequent geonegative orientations are made during the free-swimming period. These are of short duration and tend to occur, 1) when it emerges from the parent; 2) at the beginning of each of the frequently recurring periods of swimming activity; 3) immediately upon making contacts. Unoriented movements follow each orientation and constitute much the greater part of behavior.The larva lacks definite organs of attachment. The entire surface of the tunic becomes adhesive at the time of metamorphosis. Only those structures that make up the action systems of the larva are fully differentiated, all other parts are embryonic in condition.

    Notes: The integument of the vermilion-spotted newt contains three kinds of pigment--yellow, red, and black. The yellow is uniform and continuous over the whole body; the red and black are discrete, and are chiefly in large spots. The pattern does not change measurably in an adult individual.Functional changes in contraction of the scattered dorsal melanophores were uncommon. The only efficient single factors found were a long subjection to low temperature (expansion) and injection of pituitrin (contraction).Removal of skin was followed by a rapid mass migration of dermal elements into the wound area. Melanophores were thus furnished to a dorsal wound, and after several months black spots formed from these. Red pigment never regenerated nor migrated into a wound. Yellow pigment was formed in situ after the wound had completely healed.Auto-, homo-, and heterotransplants lost their pigment patterns and were gradually reorganized so as to conform in gross appearance to the surrounding pattern of the individual host's skin. The transformation was never complete in eight months, but new black spots and new yellow pigment eventually formed.The behavior of melanophores during morphogenesis differed for specific areas of the integument. Their movements and aggregation were highly coordinated among themselves.

    Notes: In the epidermal cells of green-frog tadpoles (Rana clamitans) there are present coarse, conspicuous mitochondrial threads. In the dorsal body regions, epidermal cells of the middle layers also contain pigment granules, grouped in crescentic masses in the distal portions of the cells.Administration of thyroid extract results in permanent disappearance of the mitochondrial threads and disappearance to a large extent of the epidermal pigment granules. Processes of cellular dedifferentiation and proliferation occur rapidly over widespread areas, the mitochondria undergoing intracellular resorption. A new type of epidermis is developed containing many cutaneous glands, adapted for the approaching terrestrial life.Wound infliction induces similar processes of cellular dedifferentiation and proliferation in the epidermis in the immediate vicinity of the wound. Cells in this region lose their mitochondrial threads by intracellular resorption, and there is also some disappearance of pigment granules. The new epidermal cells in the early stages of regeneration produce neither mitochondrial threads nor pigment. This condition is not permanent, however, and in the later stages the larval characteristics appear again, both mitochondrial threads and pigment being redifferentiated.In the hyperthyroid animals there is also a significant mobilization of mesenchymal chromatophores, correlated to some extent with the loss of epidermal pigment.The significance of epidermal changes is discussed with reference to cutaneous abnormalities associated with hyperthyroid and hypothyroid conditions.

    Notes: Animal posture cannot be regarded as an actual inheritance, for it constitutes a current physiological interaction between gravity and an organism, according to the structure and physical powers of the latter. Hence, ‘inherited posture’ merely implies that in a given species physical qualifications are congenitally transmitted, which facilitate a certain characteristic position of the body. Evolution of posture, therefore, has inevitably been associated with corresponding evolutionary changes in organic structures.Evidence furnished by the application of biomechanics to studies of ancient and modern primate structures indicates that man's erectly supported body posture could only have originated from a vertically suspended posture (arboreal).The fact that the prehuman stem passed through an earlier arboreal and brachiating period is attested to by the grasping character of his hands, the ratio of arm-body length, the extreme mobility of the shoulder-joints, as well as the extension of his legs on the body.The semierect posture of the great apes is not an advance toward human bipedism, but a modern reversion toward quadrupedism.Postural evidence conforms with the many other lines of testimony which maintain the close relationship of the human and anthropoid stems, and signifies that man has been an erect terrestrial biped since the time of his physical origin.

    Notes: Implants were made into forelimbs of Triturus viridescens using fresh, frozen and boiled kidney and liver of T. viridescens and R. pipiens. Limbs were recovered at intervals up to 70 days post-implantation.Kidney implants from Wisconsin R. pipiens gave twice as many extensive accessory structures as did Vermont frog kidney. Total induction percentages, however, were similar.Quantitative and qualitative parameters for implant-induction of accessory structures were investigated. The decrease in antigenicity and increased rate of cytolysis of frozen implants resulted in increased similarity between frog and newt kidney in rate and pattern of breakdown and in rates of induction. Modification of rate and duration of the release of the stimulating factor from the implant did not result in induction by liver implants.No evidence was found for any increase in innervation prior to or coincident with blastema formation. Implantation and implant cytolysis may cause hypersensitivity of limb tissues to the normal innervation pattern or trophic stimuli from the implant may act with those from the injured limb tissues to produce growth.The general pattern of host reaction to the implanted material was studied and described.

    Notes: The genetics and anatomy of the homoeotic mutant labiopedia (lp) of Tribolium confusum is described. The mutant is the second known among the insects to affect the mouthparts. The two-segmented labial palps of the larva are completely replaced by leg-like appendages resembling the prothoracic legs and exhibiting the apex of the trochanter and all parts distal to the trochanter. The labial palps of the pupa and adult are likewise replaced by legs. The three-segmented palps of the adult are replaced by appendages closely similar to the prothoracic legs in many characters and exhibiting the apex of the coxa and all other parts of a normal walking leg. The legs have never been seen to move although they are supplied with labial nerves and an almost complete, though highly reduced, set of muscles. The labial appendages are invariably leg-like and well-developed, failing to show the range of variability which is commonly observed in homoeotic mutants. The leg-like form of the heteromorphic organ is in striking conformity with the appendicular origin of the palps.The lp gene is recessive and sex-linked, with lethal to semilethal effects. It is the third sex-linked gene discovered in Tribolium confusum and the first sex-linked homoeotic mutant known among the insects. Since the inheritance of lp is entirely in the manner of a sex-linked gene, it most probably is located on the original X chromosome, unless the translocated autosomal portion attached to the Y has become inert.

    Notes: Light and electron microscope studies of the digital lamellar setae of geckos and anoline lizards demonstrate that the free ends of the setae consist of flattened spatulas of less than 1 μ in width. The anoline setae are simple structures usually less than 30 μ in length and with a single terminal spatula to each seta. In contrast the setae of geckos are complex structures of about 100 μ in length, with numerous branchings, and having many spatulas per seta. The spatulas of Gekko and Aristelliger were smaller (0.2-0.4 μ in width) than the spatulas of Anolis (0.8 μ in width). The electron microscope studies indicate that the scales of lizards appear to be covered with small epidermal spines (1.5 μ long). The setae of anoles and geckos are considered to have evolved independently from these more primitive epidermal spines. It is further suggested that the mechanism that allows the lamellae to adhere to the substratum is a surface phenomenon. The spatulas provide a large surface that is in contact with the substratum and thus produces a large total frictional force. The α layer of the lizard stratum corneum can be readily identified in the lamellae. However, the structure of the β layer is not easily interpreted and there is evidence of a fibrous layer between the Oberhautchen and the α layer in the skin of the outer lamellar surface.

    Notes: The rat submaxillary salivary gland has five distinct parenchymal zones.1Acini consist of secretory and myoepithelial cells. An extensive network of canaliculi connect the many cells within an acinus to the main lumen. The fine structure of acinar secretory cells suggests that they are capable of great synthetic capacity; each cell having a large amount of ergastoplasm, many Golgi zones, and a great amount of secretory material. It is proposed that these cells are of the continually secreting type.2Intercalated ducts consist of cuboidal cells and myoepithelium. This segment connects the acini to the main conduit system of the gland. The fine structure of the cuboidal cells indicates that they are essentially nonsecretory.3The granular duct consists of three types of columnar cells; (a) dark narrow cells which contain many free ribosomes but no ergastoplasm or granules, (b) light granular cells which have varying amounts of ergastoplasm and granules, (c) dark granular cells which are full of granules while the other cell constituents including the nucleus, occupy a basal position. It is proposed that these three cells represent different secretory stages of the same cell type. This supports the interpretation that secretion in these cells is not continuous, but cyclic in nature.4The striated duct forms a small portion of the total gland parenchyma and consists of tall columnar cells with extensive infolding of the basal plasma membrane, relatively little ergastoplasm and very few granules. It seems likely that ion and water metabolism is a specialized function of this segment.5The excretory duct consists of three cell types: (a) tall columnar light cells, (b) dark columnar vesiculated cells and (c) small basal cells. The basal infoldings of these cells and the arrangement of many capillaries around these ducts suggests that this segment is primarily concerned with water transport.

    Notes: It was demonstrated that the germinal (surface) epithelium around the mouse ovary consists of simple squamous, cuboidal and columnar arrangements of cells. With the electron microscope it was shown that these cells have the usual cytoplasmic constituents such as the Golgi complex, mitochondria, ergastoplasm, and free ribosomes. Their nuclei are surrounded by a bilamellar envelope with coarse granular masses of nuclear material being distributed along its inner surface. From the surface of these cells extend numerous microprojections which usually are irregular in squamous cells, but are villus-like on the cuboidal and columnar forms. These microvilli appear to be simply extensions of the cell surface and apparently reflect the capacity of mesothelium for such specialization at its free surface. The intercellular boundaries are seen to consist of wavy, downward extensions of the plasma membrane or a complex irregular interdigitation of coarse lateral processes. The latter form is especially prominent between squamous cells. A membrane is present at the basal cell surface. The observations concerning the presence of microprojections and the nature of the intercellular boundaries were discussed in the light of the controversies on these subjects which appear in the early literature. The possible permeability of the germinal epithelium and its functional significance during maturation of the ovary were also discussed.

Copulation itself involves seizure of the female's cerci by the male's claspers, extension of the male's paraprocts, erection of the aedeagus, and ejaculation. The male's ability to copulate is prevented by damaging or removing his seventh abdominal segment. If this segment is left intact, his freshly removed abdomen can copulate with a freshly isolated female's abdomen when their terminalia are rubbed together appropriately. The male's genital apparatus accurately “recognizes” the terminalium of an inseminated female, and forced-copulation cannot be induced. The claws at the ends of the male's claspers are inserted into the bases of the female's cerci. The thumbs of the apical paraprocts of the male fit into a temporary coital cavity within the upper vagina. The hooks of the male's apical paraprocts are inserted into the female's cloacal hollow. The teeth on the distal end of the aedeagus ratchet into the teeth on the dorsal vaginal valve and evert the upper vagina. The posterior ends of the seminal vesicles and accessory glands open and contractions of these organs release seminal material only into the bursa of the female.

    Notes: A review of the literature of the gastric glands of reptiles shows marked differences of opinion concerning the nature and character of the cells composing the gastric glands.The present investigation of the gastric glands of the alligator has been carried out by histochemical and physiological experiments, rather than by the usual morphological methods, but the results can be stated both in terms of structure and function.1The surface epithelial cells and those lining the gland pits in the fundic, cardiac, and pyloric regions of the stomach of the alligator are not strictly comparable functionally to the mucous cells of mammals.2The cells composing the necks and bodies of the glands in the fundus, according to histochemical reactions, are parietal cells.3Certain cells lying beneath the columnar epithelial cells lining the lumen of the stomach and the foveolae react to one method of fixation and staining as do the chief cells of mammalian material.4The results of the experiment with the vital dye, neutral red, show that the cells of the gastric pits, the necks and bodies of the glands in the fundus of the alligator's stomach, react identically as those of the mammalian stomach.5The gastric juice of the alligator is acid to litmus-paper and contains a free mineral acid.

    Notes: The course of digestion of an essentially protein food (beef liver) was followed by histological and histochemical methods in Planaria dorotocephala. After an average fasting period of two weeks, the planarians were fed and examined at close time intervals, ranging from one minute to eighty-seven days after feeding. Liver particles are engulfed by the phagocytic cells of the intestine into food vacuoles, where a series of digestive changes occur. The liver particles coalesce into a granular spherule which gradually condenses into a homogeneous and chromatophilic spherule. As the spherule transforms from a granular to a homogeneous condition, it exhibits a gradually increasing affinity for stains, an intensified protein reaction, and a gradual diminution in size. These spherules are protein, since they give positive xanthoproteic and Millon reactions.The homogeneous protein spherules gradually disappear, beginning at about twelve hours after feeding and continuing until the fifth day. During this period fat-droplets form, gradually increasing at the expense of the protein spherules. The protein spherules apparently dissolve into the cytoplasm, furnishing intermediate chemical compounds (tests indicate that a carbohydrate stage does not intervene) from which fat is synthesized. It thus appears that the fat is formed from the protein spherules. The fat thus formed is stored in the phagocytic cells, and remains unchanged in quantity for a fasting period lasting six weeks, after which it gradually diminishes. During the engulfment of the food, the fat decreases markedly, apparently furnishing energy for phagocytic activities. A few of the protein spherules may persist as «protein reserve».

    Notes: Microscopic examination of both living and stained forms indicates that the so-called ‘multivacuolate’ and ‘amicronucleate races of Paramecium caudatum’ belong to the species Paramecium multimicronucleata. The published accounts of the morphology and cultural characteristics of the various forms are compared and provide additional evidence. A more complete description is given, including distinctive characters previously omitted.The conjugation process of P. multimicronucleata in general resembles that of P. caudatum, most of the differences being due to the presence of four micronuclei instead of one. These each divide twice with characteristic figures, twelve of the sixteen daughter nuclei then degenerating. One of the remaining four splits to form a single pair of functional pronuclei in each cell. The two migratory pronuclei interchange as in P. caudatum. The synkaryon divides three times, and probably seven of these nuclei degenerate. The remaining one apparently undergoes two divisions. In most cases by six to eight hours after the conjugants separate two micronuclei of the four thus produced form enlarged macronuclear anlagen, the other two remaining as micronuclei. Each anlage divides within the next two or four hours, producing four macronuclear and four micronuclear analagen. Two fissions, each preceded by a division of the micronuclei, restore vegetative conditions.The process described above is compared with conjugation in P. bursaria, P. caudatum, and P. putrinum.

    Notes: The testis is differentiated from the indifferent gonad in embryos of fourteen days. The indifferent gonad and the sex cords contain large and small cells, both of which are derived from the coelomic epithelium. The large cells have generally been called primordial germ cells, they increase by mitosis and reach their maximum in embryos of seventeen days. But all the large cells degenerate and have completely disappeared by nine days after birth. The large cells, therefore, do not contribute to the formation of cells in the tubules of the adult testis. After the disappearance of the large cells, the solid seminiferous tubules are composed of indifferent epithelial cells of a uniform type, which are descendants of the small cells of the genital ridge, and which later form both the germ cells and the Sertoli cells of the seminiferous tubules of the adult testis.Definitive spermatogonia begin to form fifteen days after birth, when the solid cords are becoming hollow tubules; spermatocytes occur at twenty-three days, when the testes are entering the inguinal canals; spermatids are first observed about thirty-three days, when the testes enter the scrotum, and perfect spermatozoa at forty-eight days. Sertoli cells cannot be clearly distinguished until almost puberty; these cells may be only indifferent epithelial cells. During the development of the seminiferous tubules, a good many cells of all stages of spermatogenesis degenerate.

    Notes: The prochordal plate in the chick is a thickening of the entoderm in the anterior part of the area pellucida. It consists at first of several layers of yolk-charged cells, which finally lose their yolk and form a thin layer of entoderm.The prechordal plate (an area of mesodermal proliferation immediately anterior to the notochord) arises immediately anterior to the primitive streak (and head process when the latter appears) in a part of the region once occupied by the prochordal plate. Later the prechordal plate comes to lie upon the dorsal wall of the foregut.The premandibular cavities arise in condensations of the prechordal mesoderm. The cavities seem to appear during the rapid expansion of the prechordal mesoderm which occurs in response to a release from constraint imposed by surrounding structures. They are connected with one another across the midline by a usually solid bridge of mesoderm.Later, the cavities are replaced by a mesodermal condensation which serves as a mold, on the surface of which the oculomotor muscles appear, arising before the disappearance of the premandibular head cavities.Differences in the relations of notochord and hypophysis in the chick and robin may be explained by an analysis of the growth of the two forms. The analysis furnishes a basis for understanding the relations of the anterior end of the notochord in the mammal.

    Notes: Paramecium trichium varies from 50 μ to 105 μ long with most individuals between 80 μ and 90 μ. The width varies from one-third to one-half the length. It is somewhat depressed dorsoventrally. The broad buccal groove extends from the anterior left border diagonally across the ventral surface to the mouth, which is usually slightly anterior to the middle and to the right side of the median line. The mouth leads into a relatively long cytopharynx containing an undulating membrane. The cytopyge is subterminal and the small caudal tuft of longer cilia is subapical. The plastic ectosarc contains numerous trichocysts. A contractile vacuole apparatus occurs near either end. Each is deeply located and stains more intensely than surrounding protoplasm. In life there appear to be two alternately contracting vacuoles with smaller ones adjacent. Contractions are from fifteen to twenty-five per minute. The macronucleus is medium in size and the single micronucleus is of the ‘caudatum’ type.Binary fission appears to be initiated by a metaphase-like condition of the micronucleus. This is followed by great enlargement and the eventual separation of the chromatin threads into two anaphase groups. The metaphase thus appears to precede the changes which correspond to a prophase in other cases. During division of the body, the two old contractile vacuoles persist as the posterior ones for the daughters, new anterior ones being developed.

    Notes: Recent physiological studies on the crayfish Procambarus clarki (Girard), Astacura, Decapoda, have suggested the existence of certain anomalies between the classical interpretation of the segmentation of the crayfish and the more recently established segmental innervation patterns. An extensive reinvestigation of the skeletal segmentation has been undertaken, based on the dissection of both fresh and fixed specimens of this and two other crayfish species, to decide to what extent misinterpretation of the skeletal structure might provide an explanation of these apparent anomalies.As a result of this attempt to provide a self- consistent analysis of the crayfish skeleton, it has been necessary to conclude that the epimeral plate is tergal rather than pleural in origin, that the basal segment of the thoracic legs contains a subcoxal element, that this subcoxa exists as a free leg segment in the last thoracic legs and that the abdominal pleural folds are in part homologous with the subcoxae of the thorax. On the other hand it has not been necessary to diverge from the classical account of the segmentation, except to recognize the existence of a seventh abdominal segment (segment XXI) posterior to the uropod segment.

    Notes: The pituitary of Hydrolagus is divided into four parts: the rostral pars distalis, the proximal pars distalis, neurointermediate lobe and an oral or pharyngeal component the Rachendachhypophyse. The Rachendachhypophyse may be comparable to the ventral lobe of elasmobranchs, in their position, histology and post- embryonic structure. A well defined hypothalamo- hypophysial neurosecretory system demonstrable with aldehyde fuchsin is present. The nucleus lateralis tuberis is long and seems to extend from the posterior region of the optic chiasma to the median eminence. The nucleus preopticus is situated anterodorsal to the optic chiasma. The bulk of the neurosecretory axons enter the neurointermediate lobe and have perivascular endings. At least some axons seem to terminate in median eminence, and this region is intimately connected with the pars distalis by a network of capillaries, suggesting the presence of a hypothalamo- hypophysial portal system. The presence of median eminence and hypothalamo- hypophysial portal system in elasmobranchs, and its apparent occurrence in Hydrolagus, seem to necessitate modification of earlier views concerning the phylogenetic derivation of the tetrapod neurohypophysis.

    Notes: In this paper the telencephalon of Latimeria chalumnae, the only surviving crossopterygian, is described and compared to that of other lower vertebrates. It is concluded that Latimeria cannot be related to a particular group of vertebrates, but stands intermediate between the dipnoans and the actinopterygians in its forebrain structure. With respect to the shape of the subpallium, the structure of the telencephalon medium, and the arrangement of its fiber systems, the latimerian forebrain closely approaches the dipnoan condition. The pallium and membranous structures of the telencephalon of Latimeria, on the contrary, are reminiscent in gross form and histological structure of their actinopterygian homologues.However, not all the structural features of the latimerian forebrain can be related to either the actinopterygian or the dipnoan plan. The subpallium, for instance, is more primitive than that of either group mentioned; in fact, it is more simply organized than that of any other living gnathostome.The forebrain of Latimeria appears to display no special structural affinities to the amphibian forebrain. This is not too surprising, since the Coelacanths, among which Latimeria is classified, represent only a side branch of the Crossopterygii, and are not in the main line of evolution to higher forms. It is known that members of the same class of lower vertebrates may vary considerably in their forebrain structure. Hence, the Rhipidistia, totally extinct Crossopterygii which are believed to have given rise to the terrestrial vertebrates, may have possessed a forebrain quite different from that of Latimeria.

The development of skin glands in various regions is found to be sequential. The glands also undergo development at different rates in different regions. Hormone treatment, besides precocious skin maturation brings about temporal separation of otherwise simultaneous events. The findings emphasize the intrinsic, qualitative differences of cells of the skin system.

    Notes: The teleost Porichthys notatus has a long infundibular stalk measuring about 3 to 5 mm or more in the adult. The infundibular recess extends into the stalk in the form of a long infundibular funnel. The hypothalamo-hypophysial system is typical of the teleosts. In the hypophysectomized fish where there was no regeneration or reorganiation of the infundibular stalk, aldehyde fuchsin-positive substance progressively increased in quantity in the cell bodies of the preoptic nucleus. When these specimens were subjected to continuous light for 15 days, the staining intensity of the cells of the preoptic nucleus diminished, but greater accumulation of AF-positive substance was noticed along the axonal pathway and in the infundibulum. This suggests that light might act as an activating agent causing the dispersal of the accumulated neurosecretory material from the cells along their axons.

    Notes: In hematopoietic marrow, sinuses form a system of vessels running radially from the periphery toward the central longitudinal vein. Hematopoietic tissue, having the form of cords, lies between the sinuses.The wall of the vascular sinus of the marrow, in fullest development, is trilaminar. It consists of a lining cell, basement membrane and adventitial cell. It may, however, consist of lining cell alone. Occasionally, the wall is bilaminar, made up of lining cell and basement membrane, or lining cell and adventitial cell. The adventitial cell and lining cell are reticular cells and may exactly resemble one another. But often the adventitial cell, and occasionally, the lining cell of a sinus may be very voluminous and rarefied, extending among the hematopoietic cells. The mural reticular cells, particularly the adventitial cells, may be phagocytic. The adventitial cells, moreover, contain fat droplets, and may accumulate the unilocular fat deposit characteristic of a fatty marrow.Megakaryocytes lie outside the sinus discharging platelets through mural apertures. In places, fairly large segments of sinus wall may become attenuated, pierced by apertures and, perhaps, drop out, with the result that the sinus is enlarged. Normo-blasts, reticulocytes and myelocvtes enter the circulation by passing into a sinus. Three mechanisms are present: (1) They may pass through existing apertures or (2) create an aperture by pressing into a sinus wall. (3) A segment of wall may drop out setting heretofore extravascular cells into the circulation.Adventitial spurs or processes extend from the sinus into the perisinus tissue. These spurs are of the same structure as the sinus wall. The perisinus tissue, present as cords between sinuses, is typically filled with hematopoietic and other free cells. The adventitial processes, together with the reverse surface of the sinus walls, incompletely bound the intersinus hematopoietic cords. The intersinus space may thereby have the same contour as sinuses. They differ from sinuses in containing many hematopoietic cells and in being less completely bounded by wall.It is postulated that the sinuses and intersinal cords form a reciprocating system wherein portions may become vascular (sinal) or extravascular (cordal) depending upon the requirements for hematopoiesis, blood flow, blood storage and delivery of cells to the blood. The reciprocation is effected by the ready capacity of sinal walls and adventitial spurs to take form, change disposition and break down.

    Notes: Hermaphroditic gonads of Rhabdites elegans can be distinguished in early developmental stages, but oogonia cannot be told from spermatogonia. Certain peculiar males show developmental processes approaching those of hermaphrodites. More eggs are produced by a hermaphrodite than there are sperm with which to fertilize them. Such exhausted hermaphrodites may be mated with males and produce fertile eggs, but convincing evidence of cross-fertilization is lacking. Unmated females of Diplogaster aerivora live longer than mated ones, but no difference was found in the males. Sexual instinct seems to be lacking in males of R. dolichura and R. elegans.Hermaphrodites mated with males produce many more male offspring than by self-fertilization, but these do not exhibit sexual instincts. Females produced by cross-fertilization are not pure females, nor have they been found at all in R. elegans or R. dolichura. After fertilization in these two species, both polar bodies are formed and the pronuclei fuse. Sex is determined by the form of sperm.

In this part are considered the origin and development of the subvertebral, lateral, and dorsal lymphatics of the trunk, the caudal lymphatics, and the posterior lymph hearts.The chief lymphatic trunks arise along the veins from a series of small, spindle-shaped, and discontinuous anlagen which subsequently coalesce and thus establish continuity with one another. Lymph plexuses are formed from which emerge the main secondary lymph channels. After such trunks are laid down as indicated, smaller branches and capillaries spring from them by sprouting or extension, due to their actively proliferating endothelium.The posterior lymph hearts ‘crystallize,’ so to speak, from localized areas of the lateral lymphatic plexus. During its reorganization and differentiation, it temporarily separates from the surrounding lymph plexus. Other genetic details, such as the formation of its valves, histogenesis of its walls, number of hearts laid down, etc., are also considered.     Notes: In general, the changes of locomotor rate of Amoeba under the influence of temperature are similar to the effects of temperature in other biological processes.The rate increases with rising and decreases with falling temperatures within a certain temperature range, this being, for the forms investigated, the interval between 6° and 23.5°C. In some individuals, however, these limits were found to be wider, extending from 2° to 26°. There is an average optimum at about 23.5°, beyond which an increase in temperature is followed by a decrease in rate. The immediate response of Amoeba to a change of temperature is variable, due, as was shown in a previous paper, to the fact that locomotor-rate changes are rhythmic. The effect of a change of temperature is thus conditioned not only by the enviornmental factors, but also by the phases of the locomotor rhythm. This fact also makes it difficult to establish the exact quantitative relationship which exists between a change of temperature and the locomotor rate - an aspect which will be developed in a future paper.

The ovaries are paired and each is composed of about eighteen ovarian tubules terminating in a cup-shaped modification of the oviduct - the egg calyx. The epithelial lining of the oviduct is glandular. The spermatheca, a bladder-shaped sac situated dorsal to and between the two ovaries, opens into the vagina near the exterior and is filled with spermatozoa after copulation. Spermatozoa have not been found in any other part of the female. Dorsal to the spermatheca and lying against it is the spermathecal gland. It is connected with the spermatheca by an elongate spermathecal duct.The male reproductive system comprises the testes, vas deferens, accessory glands, and the penis. Each testis is composed of eight to ten cone-shaped follicles, which are composed of a number of cysts so arranged as to appear segmented. All of the cells of each cyst are in approximately the same stage of development. No seminal receptacle is present. Each follicle is connected with the vas deferens by an efferent tube. The paired vas deferens opens into the sac-like intromittant organ or penis. The terminal portion of the penis may be everted, and when everted is conical in shape. At its base is a thin chitinous collar, the margins of which are thickened, forming ridges.

    Notes: A study of the development and seasonal changes of the testis in Diemyctylus viridescens shows that accessory testicular lobes arise as follows: Emptying of the caudal zone of the testis at mating is followed by degeneration of the lobules (tubules) of that region, reducing it to a slender cord consisting chiefly of duct system and residual spermatogonia. A regeneration of lobules at the distal end of this cord later gives rise to the second or accessory lobe.Accessory lobes develop in immature males after a similar reduction of the caudal end of the testis through spermatogonial degeneration or an abortive spermatogenesis. The caudal germ-cell cord thus formed is comparable to that resulting from extrusion of spermatozoa, and the development of new lobules at the distal end of this cord gives rise to a second lobe as in adult males. There is no evidence of the formation of a multiple testis by outgrowths from the primary lobe or by the junction of several lobes originally separate.A multiple testis occurs in Urodele species exhibiting two peculiarities of the spermatogenetic pattern: (1) a slow spermatogenetic wave and, (2) delayed regeneration of lobules emptied at mating or by degeneration of their germ cells. The number of lobes is correlated with the age of the individual. In Diemyctylus under 6 cm. the first accessory lobe has not yet developed.

    Notes: Amoeba proteus contains a central elongated fluid portion (plasmasol), a rigid layer surrounding this (plasmagel), a thin elastic surface layer (plasmalemma), and a hyaline layer between the plasmagel and the plasmalemma which is fluid at the tip of active pseudopods and in certain other regions.The plasmasol is an emulsion. It consists of a fluid in which various vacuoles and granuoles are suspended. The plasmagel is probably alveolar in structure. It contains the same kinds of substances as the plasmasol, but some of the fluid appears to be gelated so as to form alveoli. The plasmalemma probably consists of interwoven protein fibers and a lipoid which fills the interstices.The plasmasol is probably hypertonic; the plasmagel and the plasmalemma are probably semipermeable. This and other factors result in an excess inflow of water, stretching the plasmagel and the plasmalemma. When a pseudopod is formed, the inner portion of the plasmagel liquefies locally. This produces a local decrease in elastic strength resulting in the formation of a protuberance, a pseudopod. As this is formed there is contraction at the posterior end, resulting in forward flow of the plasmasol and extension of the pseudopod.If the pseudopod is attached, the plasmalemma, being attached to the substratum and to the adjoining plasmagel, slides over the plasmagel above and remains stationary below, rolling movement results. If it is free, the plasmalemma is stretched out with movement in it equal on all sides. If the free pseudopods become attached to the substratum at the tip after they are thus formed, walking movement results.During locomotion of either type, the plasmasol continuously gelates at the tip of the extending pseudopods forming plasmagel, and the plasmagel continuously solates at the posterior end forming plasmasol.Response is due largely to changes in the elastic strength of the plasmagel in the adhesiveness of the plasmalemma and in turgidity.Locomotion in Amoeba verrucosa is in principle the same as it is in Amoeba proteus.

    Notes: The chromosome number in the domestic fowl is approximately thirty-five or thirty-six. It is difficult to determine the exact number, owing to the smallness of the shortest chromosomes of the complex and also to the tendency of the chromomeres to occasionally appear as discrete chromosomes rather than as parts of a whole.Difficulty experienced in fixing adult testes has prevented a satisfactory demonstration of all stages of spermatogenesis. However, satisfactorily preserved prophases of first spermatocytes have been observed which, together with the large amount of embryonic material available, have made it possible to work out the behavior of the sex-associated chromosomes with reasonable certainty. Measurements of the chromosomes indicate that the longest chromosome in the cell is single in the female and paired in the male. Two classes of eggs are therefore possible - one with and one without this long chromosome, while all the spermatozoa produced are alike in possessing the long chromatic element. The female is therefore heterozygous and the male homozygous in regard to this chromosome which affords a cytological parallel for the genetic evidence of the heterozygosity of the female.

    Notes: A study of the peripheral nerves of the earthworm shows that one pair of nerve trunks arise from the lateral regions of the cerebral ganglion, one pair from near the lateral, and two pairs from the ventral region of the circumpharyngeal connectives. These supply, in the order given, the prostomium, segment 1 and segment 2. Segment 3 and each succeeding segment, except the last, are supplied with three pairs of nerve trunks which arise from the nerve cord in the segment concerned. None of the nerve trunks of the body was observed to send branches to more than one segment, which shows that they are segmental in origin and distribution.The anterior portion of the central nervous system has undergone caudal migration and modification of its ganglia. Some of the nerve trunks have disappeared through atrophy, while others have become fused at their bases.A subepidermal nerve plexus is found at the base of the epidermal cells from which nerve fibers pass to the internal nerve net and to the central nervous system. This plexus also sends intercellular and intracellular fibers into the epidermis.The so-called sense cells of the epidermis appear to be the cell bodies of sensory neurones which send nerve fibers to the ganglia of the central nervous system, where they form synaptic connections with other neurones.There is an enteric nerve plexus in the wall of the alimentary canal which is directly connected to the circumpharyngeal connectives.

All Amphibia exhibiting such a reduction have their epidermis either penetrated by capillaries or thinned to facilitate greater cutaneous respiration. The epidermis of both sexes of A. robustus is penetrated by capillaries. The «hairs» of the adult male are merely extensions of this vasculated epidermis to compensate for the greater muscularity, size, and activity of this sex.The digits of terrestrial urodeles do not serve as special centers of cutaneous respiration. Digital sinuses are present in all urodeles. The abdominal and femoral tubercles of arboreal and some terrestrial frogs may function greatly in respiration, for their epidermis is penetrated by capillaries.All urodeles and frogs having well-developed and frequently emptied lungs possess a functionally complete auricular septum and a spiral valve. Injection experiments demonstrate a complete separation of arterial and venous blood in living specimens. A reduction of the lungs conditions a reduction of the left auricle, but disuse causes no change in size. A great decrease of the lungs, or even a disuse of them, conditions a fenestration of the auricular septum and a loss of the spiral valve. The spiral valve is formed by a backward growth of one of the synangial valves and is not homologous with the accessory valves of dipnoans. Lungless salamanders have no left auricle and no spiral valve.

    Notes: One of the most perfect “lock and key” adaptations known, the external reproductive organs in spiders are subject to considerable variations. Two extreme types of female reproductive organs are described in detail, and these in turn compared with the European species of the same genus. Thus it is shown that the reproductive system in the same genus of spiders may exhibit great differences in structure while all other characters remain more or less the same, the natural conclusion being that caution should be exercised in creating new or splitting up old genera on the basis of characters of the external reproductive system. The same applies to the male.Two extreme types of palpi are described and then compared with the palpi of the European species. In the case of the male, however, the differences seem to be of a less profound nature.

    Notes: The shedding of epidermis in this species, as in most amphibia, is periodic. A single outer layer of cells separates nearly simultaneously over the whole body; two hours to ten days may be required for the process. In the first three months of laboratory existence the average frequency of molting was 9 per cent. In nature the frequency was only 2 per cent; this increased during the life in confinement in five months up to 25 per cent. Death in the laboratory was usually preceded by numerous molts.The time of a molt is not normally determined by any one of a number of ordinary external conditions which were modified; but nevertheless several means were found of inducing molting. These were, in order of their efficacy: bandaging with gauze on body or tail, wrapping the body with thread, stitching the body wall, applying hot water, and transplanting skin. Molting frequencies up to 98 per cent may thus be obtained.Since molting is periodic and simultaneous, it is evidently coordinated. Experimental induction requires a latent period of six to ninety-six hours, depending upon the stimulus. Recent skin grafts molt with the host, so that the coordination is probably chemical. The primary significance of molting in all groups of animals is possibly the getting rid of unautolyzable waste materials, i.e., worn epithelial structures.

    Notes: Early in conjugation, both in micronucleate and amicronucleate ciliates, the original oral structures degenerate and are quickly succeeded by new rudiments which may or may not attain functional competency. These changes were followed in matings of amicronucleate Oxytricha fallax and, in somewhat less detail, of amicronucleate Paramecium multimicronucleatum and P. trichium.In the ex-conjugants of Oxytricha the new peristomes did not reach complete structural development: they bore a deficient number of adoral membranelles and lacked an undulating membrane along the right border. Numerous isolated pairs gave rise to ex-conjugants, all of which died within a few days. Macronuclear changes in conjugation seemed normal.In P. multimicronucleatum most of the ex-conjugants lacked a buccal cavity. Either the second generation oral apparatus had failed to develop or had disappeared quickly after it did arise. An occasional ex-conjugant possessed an oral opening which could have been the persisting original buccal cavity, or a possible new one. Isolated pairs yielded 80-100% lethality. The discrepancy from 100% is explainable on the basis of precocious separation of a small number of pairs before their macronuclei had reached irreversible skein formation, as judged by stained specimens. The macronuclear changes were somewhat different from those of micronucleate conjugation.P. trichium amicronucleate conjugations were studied only from cases in mass cultures, all of which died out. Although most of the ex-conjugants lacked buccal cavities, there was a higher percentage of individuals with mouths than was true for P. multimicronucleatum.

    Notes: RNA synthesis in isolated Drosophila salivary glands was studied by autoradiography. The dry mass of cellular structures was determined by interference microscopy; a correction which compensates for self-absorption of β-particles, and consequent lowered grain counts, is discussed. The correction factors are 12.0 for nucleolus, 5.0 for nucleoplasm and 8.8 for cytoplasm.After 15 seconds in uridine-H3, label was localized over the nucleolus; after one minute, nucleoplasm RNA became labeled also. In situ synthesis of some nucleolar RNA is indicated.Comparisons of uridine-H3 and cytidine-H3 incorporation were made in glands exposed briefly to isotope, followed by transfer to unlabeled nucleoside solutions. The data suggest two RNA fractions in nucleoli. Rapid turnover and higher uridine incorporation characterized one fraction, which resembled RNA of nucleoplasm metabolically. The second nucleolar RNA incorporated less uridine, remained longer in the nucleolus, and resembled cytoplasmic RNA in precursor incorporation pattern.Preincubation in Actinomycin D before uridine-H3 labeling resulted in 80% inhibition of RNA synthesis in both nucleolus and nucleoplasm. Longer isotope exposures produced some increase in labeling. Actinomycin treatment delayed appearance of label in cytoplasmic RNA.After HCl extraction of uridine-H3-labeled RNA, some activity, presumed to be incorporated in DNA, remained. This non-extractable label appeared earliest over nucleoli, and subsequently over chromatin. Actinomycin treatment abolished incorporation of non-extractable label into nucleoli.

    Notes: At or shortly prior to the separation of the cuticle and the epidermis a cuticular layer appears to be added to the inner surface of the old cuticle. The term interzone cuticle is applied to this layer. The interzone cuticle appears to give rise to the ecdysial membrane.Ecdysial membranes are characterized by the fact that they (1) vary in position with respect to the moulting fluid and old cuticle, (2) are generally quite thin, transparent, delicate membranes, (3) contain chitin, (4) vary in their resistance to the action of the moulting fluid, and (5) generally have the same stainng properties as the subcuticle, due primarily to the presence of a mucous material present in the subcuticle which becomes attached to the inner surface of the ecdysial membrane and which is believed to function as a lubricant at ecdysis.The ecdysial membrane and subcuticle are structurally quite different when examined under the electron microscope.No particular evolutionary significance can be ascribed to the existence of an ecdysial membrane  -  such membranes being found all the way from the primitive Collembola to the advanced Hymenoptera. Any possible function(s) of the ecdysial membrane has yet to be discovered. Various functions are suggested for the subcuticle, all of which are consistent with its reactions to various histochemical reagents.Additional observations were made and discussed concerning (1) the reactions of various portions of the cuticle at various stages to the PAS test, (2) the staining reactions of cuticle undergoing enzymatic degradation by the moulting fluid, and (3) the distinct staining reactions of the intersegmental membranes and basement membranes.

    Notes: The dog mandible has three joints  -  two temporomandibular and one symphyseal joint. In studies of jaws and their mechanics usually only the temporomandibular joints are considered. The symphysis is consistently neglected and because of this, remarkable features of the temporomandibular joints have never been noted.The symphysis has special connective tissue arrangements and its own vascular and nerve supply. Along the anterosuperior part of the symphysis, a strip of fibrocartilage, and running more or less parallel to it, strong cruciate ligaments bind the symphyseal plates together. Small arteries run into the symphyseal joint and it is drained by an anastomosing venous plexus. The posterior, ligamentous, portion is laced with a profuse network of nerves.The temporomandibular joint is unusual in that its joint disc is powerfully anchored to the skull medially and to the outer pole of the mandibular condyle laterally. The temporomandibular joint disc thus acts as a ligament that halts lateral movement of the condyle just as the carnassial teeth are aligned for cutting function. As the mandible moves laterally, the space between the posterior ends of the symphyseal plates widens: at the same time it narrows anteriorly. The cruciate ligaments control this movement and stabilize the symphyseal joint by preventing direct lateral displacement of the symphyseal plates. The fibrocartilage cushions this movement and also mediates rotational movements about the longitudinal axis of the mandible when crushing molar teeth come into function.

    Notes: Interferometric measurements were made on sections of salivary glands mounted in oils of refractive indices 1.410, 1.460, and 1.500, estimating optical path differences as fringe displacement with a Leitz double-beam interferometer microscope. From these data the mean concentrations (in mg/cm2/micron) of 55 cells of three glands were computed as follows: karyoplasm, 0.027±0.0026; cytoplasm, 0.048 ± 0.0024; nucleolus, 0.066±0.0041. From these concentrations it was computed, according to Maurer and Primbsch (Exp. Cell Res., 33: 8-18) that the correction factors for four micron sections were: karyoplasm, 0.203; cytoplasm, 0.114; nucleolus, 0.083. The reciprocals of these fractions (5.0, 8.8, and 12.0) are the correction factors of Arnold (J. Morph., in press) by which measured silver grain densities on autoradiographs are multiplied to give corrected (i.e. potential) densities.

Sites of high alkaline-phosphatase activity are the acinar epithelium, nurse cells, and follicular cells of the ovotestis. Sperm heads are also strongly positive for the enzyme. The nidamental gland cells and the subepithelial mucous cells associated with the loop of the hermaphroditic duct and with the spermatic groove are thionine metachromatic, alcianophilic, PAS-positive and amylase-fast. The mucous cells of the genital atrium are PAS-positive and amylase-fast but lack both thionine metachromasia and affinity for Alcian blue.

    Notes: The quinoidal secretion, secreted by holocrine action from most gland cells (no cytoplasmic inclusions), of Orthocricus arboreus may ooze out or be sprayed over 30 cm. A thick gland intima and basement membrane protects internal organs. The gland grades into a neck leading to an external orifice. An ejaculatory duct, its lumen closed by cuticular spring action, is formed by invagination of the neck. Part of the duct forms a tongue, which can independently unplug the orifice. Retractor muscles open the ejaculatory duct, secretion flows in from the gland, and the part of the duct nearest the gland closes. Sequential relaxation of the rest of the retractor muscles build up fluid pressure, which results in a spray when the orifice is unplugged. A ligament opposes the pull of the retractor muscles. Opening both duct and orifice results in secretion ooze. No intrinsic gland muscles were found. Intersegmental muscles may produce hemolymph fluid pressure on the gland, thereby contributing to secretion ooze. Illustrations are presented. A table comparing the two basic types of millipede repugnatorial glands (spirobolid and polydesmid), on the levels of structure, histology, secretion, chemistry and function is presented. The polydesmid type (2-chambered) probably evolved from the spirobolid type (1-chambered). The secretion of one type would not work in the other type of apparatus. A second table corelates the secretion and ejection mechanism of 23 species of millipeds with their phylogenetic position in the class Diplopoda.

    Notes: Tissues of White Leghorn embryos of stages 17-45, and chicks of one day, two days, and three weeks of age were frozen or fixed in 85% ethanol. Alkaline phosphatase was identified using the azo-dye or Gomori techniques.Alkaline phosphatase activity is found in the ventral mesenchyme of the esophagus surrounding the epithelium to stage 34. At stage 38 activity appears in the basal layers of the epithelium and is subsequently lost in the mesenchymal tissues. This activity persists in the epithelium throughout development and following hatching. At 16 days the mucous glands arise as solid buds of epithelium projecting into the tunica propria. These buds are highly positive for alkaline phosphatase. As differentiation of the glands becomes complete they and their ducts lose their positive phosphatase reaction.On the fourth day of development the trachea is found lying ventral to the esophagus. Mesenchyme has condensed around the tracheal epithelium by the fifth day, at stage 37 (11 days) the first cartilaginous rings appear, and by stage 38 (12 days) all are completely formed. During the third week of development the trachea increases in size. Pseudo-stratified columnar ciliated epithelium begins to appear at 15 days. Alkaline phosphatase is highly reactive in the mesenchyme surrounding the epithelium prior to cartilage formation. After the cartilages have formed the reaction diminishes and in late stages of development phosphatase is found only in the epithelium.

    Notes: An investigation of the innervation of the hand muscles of the opossum, Didelphis marsupialis virginiana, Kerr, was made to determine the pattern of hand muscle innervation in a relatively primitive quadruped mammal. Four pairs of preserved opossum hands were dissected, and the innervation of their muscles studied with a stereobinocular microscope. The distributions of the median and ulnar nerves to the hand muscles are outlined, and the details of distribution are illustrated by means of seven diagrams.Peculiar anastomoses were consistently found between the superficial interdigital rami of the median nerve and branches of the deep volar ramus of the ulnar nerve, and the short deep flexors of digit II consistently received all, or a part, of their innervation from superficial interdigital rami of the median nerve. Five features of these unusual nerve connections and distributions are summarized and discussed.

    Notes: The primitive structure of the salamander otic capsule (exemplified by Hynobius) includes both operculum and columella in the fenestra vestibuli and connection of operculum with suprascapsular cartilage by an “opercularis” muscle formed by levator scapulae. Larvae of Hynobiidae, Ambystomatidae, and Salamandridae have early development of columella and stilus, which are used in sound transmission via the suspensorium until the development of the operculum and its muscular connection with the shoulder girdle at metamorphosis. Hynobiids and ambystomatids show parallel trends toward reduction or fusion of the operculum and widening of the attachment area of the levator scapulae on the suprascapular cartilage, and some members of both families have lost the operculum.The Salamandridae have lost columella and stilus as adult structures, but extend the attachment of levator scapulae ventrally by a division resulting in attachment to the scapulocoracoid, probably as an adaptation for better reception and transmission of sound vibrations in terrestrial environments.The Plethodontidae differ strikingly in otic structure from the other families in having an operculum present in the larval stage and fused to columella, and in utilization of part of the cucullaris major as an “opercularis” muscle. These changes are probably the result of changes in orientation of the fenestra vestibuli. In plethodontids with aquatic larval stages the columella is retained as a sound-transmitting element, but in many specialized forms it is reduced or absent.Close correlation of otic structures with ecology limits their use as evolutionary indicators in salamanders. However, the general pattern of otic structures in salamanders, and the magnitude of differences in this region seen in plethodontids, indicates that the latter are probably not derived from the salamandrids, but from a primitive salamander stock.

    Notes: Observations on chelonian intracranial arteries are based primarily on the adult condition in Pseudemys scripta and on a series of Chrysemys marginata embryos. Those vessels which show major modifications are the anterior cerebral, posterior cerebral, cerebellar, and internal auditory arteries. The distal portion of the embryonic anterior cerebral is acquired by more medial vessels; from the proximal portion develops the middle cerebral which becomes the major source of supply for the lateral surface of the adult cerebral hemisphere. The posterior cerebral appears early in development and eventually supplies branches to the epiphysis, posterior portions of the hemisphere, olfactory regions, anterior face of the optic lobe, and choroid plexus of the third and lateral ventricles. The cerebellar and internal auditory arteries show similarities in development, each initially supplying the area immediately surrounding a nerve root and then acquiring larger areas of distribution by means of anastomoses with nearby medullary vessels.

    Notes: The histochemistry of the “sexual segment” granules of the kidney of male diamondback rattlesnakes has been studied to define the nature of these andro-genically responsive granules. The kidneys were variously fixed and sections stained with a number of acid dyes, as well as by a variety of carbohydrate, lipid, and protein histochemical methods. The results indicate that “sexual segment” granules bind acid dyes strongly, contain some lipids and neutral glyco- or mucoproteins, much tyrosine and lysine, and some tryptophan and cysteine. A resemblance, concluded to be superficial, is noted between the histochemical properties of zymogen granules and the predominantly proteinaceous “sexual segment” granules.

    Notes: The development of the chondrocranium of the Egyptian snake, Psammophis sibilans has been thoroughly studied in six developmental stages. The neurocranium and viscerocranium develop at the same time. In early stages the mesocephalic flexure is well represented, but later it is gradually reduced. The notochord is completely embedded inside the parachordal plate in the early and moderate stages, and the paired origin of the plate is not observed. From the very beginning the quadrate cartilage is in close contact with Meckel's cartilage. In early stages the two cartilages lie nearly at the same straight line, and throughout development the quadrate rotates freely until the angle between it and Meckel's cartilage becomes nearly a right one. It was impossible to find a stage at which the auditory capsules and their cochlear portions were separate from the parachordal plate. There is no interorbital septum and the platytrabic character of the chondrocranium is preserved. The basicranial fenestra, fenestrae X and the fenestra ovalis are formed by the resorption of pre-existing cartilage. The planum antorbitale has no separate center of chondrification. The rudiment of a simplified type of concha nasalis is formed in the last stage. The lamina transversalis anterior is formed of two separate portions. The tectum synoticum is of purely otic origin.

    Notes: The fully formed chondrocranium of the Egyptian snake, Psammophis sibilans has been described in detail. The tectum synoticum is very broad and there is apparently no tectum posterius. The notochord is completely embedded in the occipital condyle. The connection between the condyle and the odontoid process persists to the fully formed stage. There is only one commissure, representing the anterior basicapsular commissure, connecting the auditory capsule to the basal plate. The fisura metotica is continuous postero-dorsally with the fissura occipitocapsularis. The distal bent end of the shaft of the columella auris represents the processus dorsalis, and the nodule that separates from it and fuses with the quadrate is the intercalare. The interorbital septum, orbitosphenoid cartilages, basitrabecular processes and planum supraseptale are completely absent. The concha nasalis is of the simplified type, the active factor in its formation is the folding of the olfactory epithelium. The solum nasi is greatly reduced and comprises the floor of the cupola anterior, the composite lamina transversalis anterior, cartilago ectochoanalis, cartilago hypochoanalis and ectochonal plate. The branchial arches are completely absent. The pterygoquadrate is represented only by the quadrate cartilage. The ceratohyals are extremely long.

    Notes: The osteocranium of a late embryo of the Egyptian snake, Psammophis sibilans (age, 58 days; total body length, 190 mm) has been described. Attention was given to the relation of the different bones to the adjacent cartilages of the chondrocranium as well as to the topographical relation of the bones to each other in the late embryonic state. Several adjacent bones have not yet come in contact with each other. The membrane-bones make their appearance shortly before any sign of ossification in the cartilaginous cranium. The maxillary, palatine and pterygoid premordia have a slight earlier appearance than the other bony premordia. The lacrymal, postfrontal, squamosal, jugal, quadratojugal and epipterygoid bones are completely absent. The laterosphenoid bone is never performed in cartilage. The whole columella auris is ossified.

    Notes: The morphology of the entoproct Barentsia gracilis (M. Sars, 1835), has been studied primarily by routine light microscopy techniques supplemented with observations by electron microscopy. In general, the B. gracilis adult is similar in structure to other members of the Pedicellinidae. Differences noted include: the presence of conspicuous fibers, probably collagenous, which appear to reinforce the stalk- calyx connection, the presence of a distinct glandular- appearing area (also present in the larva) of unknown function, and the presence of two rows of latero- frontal cilia on the tentacles. The first detailed morphology of an entoproct larva is also presented and the striking similarity to the adult noted. Due to the confused state of Barentsia systematics, it was found that B. gracilis, B. geniculata, and B. benedeni may very well be the same animal. This is due to the great variability, apparently due to ecological factors, found in the key taxonomic characters such as stalk morphology. The feeding behavior of the adult is described and the larval feeding and rejection mechanism is reported for the first time. The larva, while still in the brood pouch, uses its ciliary girdle to remove food from the parent's food groove. The larval feeding current is generally similar to that of the adult, with modifications which are related to the lack of tentacles in the larva. The larva differs from the adult in having special ciliated rejection pathways for the removal of excess food particles.

    Notes: The cephalogenesis of chick embryos was studied at stages 3 through 11 inclusive. Ten embryos were examined at each stage. Particular attention was paid to the time of appearance of the prechordal plate mesoderm and cephalic notochord. It was found that the presumptive neural ectoderm begins to differentiate to form medullary plate as soon as it becomes associated with the chordamesoderm. Histological studies revealed the similarity of the notochord underlying the presumptive forebrain and midbrain regions, and the differences between this notochord and that associated with the hindbrain. These differences included the notochord histology and time of separation of the notochord from entoderm and neural ectoderm.
