Stony bottom. 1 female.\nDistinguished from all the other species of the genus by the lower margin of the rostrum being smooth and glabrous. Rostrum horizontally projecting to about the middle of 2nd joint of antennular peduncle, armed above with 16 subequal teeth, of which the first six stand on the carapace; these proximal teeth are separated by very short distances, but the rest are contiguous; anterior tooth at one-fifth the length of the rostrum from the acuminate tip. Carapace with small supraorbital, antennal and branchiostegal spine.\nAbdomen 6-times as long as the rostrum, 4-times as long as the carapace and a little more than twice as long as carapace and rostrum taken together. The abdomen resembles that of Stylod. amarynthis de Man, but the pleura are smooth, quite unarmed, devoid of spines.\nEyestalks cylindrical, almost half as long as carapace, cornea semiglobular, measuring two-thirds the length of the rest of the stalk, distinctly faceted, of a pale grayish colour, blackish near the posterior margin.\nAntennular peduncle little shorter than carapace, very slender, 10 to 11times as long as thick, basal joint more than twice as long as the two following combined, 2nd one and a half as long as 3rd. Antennal scale reaching by one-fourth its length beyond the antennular peduncle, narrow, the greatest width, proximally, being one-sixth the length; outer margin concave, terminal spine reaching beyond the truncate tip of the lamellar

    Description: Den laatsten Maart van het jaar 1918 vond ik op het Noordzeestrand van Ameland, even ten noorden van Nes, \xc3\xa9\xc3\xa9n mooie gave klep van Malleus vulgaris, de hamerschelp. Deze vondst is voor onze kust uiterst merkwaardig; ik heb de schelp ten geschenke gegeven aan \'s Rijks Museum van Natuurlijke Historie te Leiden, alwaar het voorwerp thans bewaard wordt. Nederland was als vindplaats voor deze soort niet bekend, waarom ik deze Malleus aan het Museum afgestaan heb. Het is een flink exemplaar, 14 bij 14 c.m. groot, loodrecht op elkaar gemeten. De kleur is zwart-violet. Het paarlmoer heeft den typischen glans en maakt een verschen indruk. De beide uitsteeksels van de slotlijn zijn ongeschonden, 5 c.m. en 3 c.m. lang. De schaal is sterk gedraaid en bladerig, vooral aan de uiteinden. Voor zoover mij bekend is, komen de thans levende Malleus-soorten in de Chineesche, Indische en Australische zee\xc3\xabn voor.\nHet is bekend dat door de scheepvaart schelpdieren worden verspreid.\nIk herinner b.v. aan Petricola pholadiformis, uit Noord-Amerika hier aangebracht via Engeland en nu langs onze geheele kust voorkomend.\nZoo iets zou ook mogelijk kunnen zijn met onze Malleus, maar daartegenover staat het bezwaar dat in deze oorlogsjaren de verbinding met de tropische zee\xc3\xabn niet meer bestaat. Dat reeds eenige jaren geleden, toen die verbinding nog wel bestond, deze zonderlinge schelp in onze streken zou zijn gebracht, lijkt mij onwaarschijnlijk, aangezien de gevonden helft volkomen gaaf is, niet gerold en er zoo versch uitziet. Van weeke deelen werd helaas geen spoor gevonden. Dat aan het strand spelende kinderen de schelp zouden hebben verloren, kan ik mij ook niet voorstellen. Dat zou eerder met een Cypraea het geval kunnen zijn;

    Description: 2. Nereidae 1).\nNereis (Platynereis) striata (Schm.). (Mastigonereis striata Schm.).\nOf this species several specimens were collected in Table bay, where they were found for the first time by Schmarda 2) and afterwards met with by Willey 3). Unfortunately the description of the species is rather short and incomplete and the synonimy somewhat dubious; therefore I think it not superfluous to give a detailed account of them, especially while an epitocous male was among them. The specimens are rather small, measuring about 30 mm. in length, whereas the number of segments amounts to 70. The specimens of Schmarda and of Willey were somewhat larger, measuring 50 mm. in length, with about 80 segments.\nNereis striata is characterized by a conspicuous coloration, consisting of a narrow, transverse, black band (dark violet in the living worm), which laterally becomes broader and acquires the shape of a brace, over the dorsal side of each segment; moreover there occurs a double black patch at the base of the dorsal cirri and an other one near the ventral cirri, whereas an interrupted black line runs in the median ventral line.\nArmature of the proboscis: maxillary region, I absent; II a narrow, semilunar patch of paragnathi; IV a semilunar group, consisting of five rows of densely crowded paragnathi; III three transverse groups, consisting of two or three separate rows of paragnathi; basal region: V absent; VI a small distiohous patch; VII and VIII five, transverse, distichous or tristichous acervuli. In some specimens group II of the maxillary region is absent or only faintly developed. In the anterior body-region

    Description: The first contribution to the knowledge of the Rhopalocera-fauna of Simalur and Pulu Babi has been published in volume XXXVI of \xe2\x80\x9eNotes from the Leyden Museum." At that time (1914) it was not probable that more material, besides the 54 recorded species, would reach our country in a time that can be looked over. So, I was very pleased by receiving, a year ago, a few species from the islets named above through the intervention of Mr. Edw. Jacobson, who himself has brought together the above quoted first collection from Simalur and Pulu Babi and also that from Sumatra. The second collection, principally from Pulu Lasia (Lasiak), neighbouring Pulu Babi (N. L. 2\xc2\xb0 7\', E. L. 96\xc2\xb0 40\'), has been brought together by Mr. G. Harmsen, who will spare no trouble to capture more representatives of this remarkable fauna, very different from that of Sumatra and of the islands Nias, Batu, Mentawei and Engano.\nIf we glance at the little map, it will be clear that the fauna of Simalur and its satellite-islets, which are isolated by the ocean from Sumatra, from the Banjak islets and from Nias, must form a faunistic unity. The chief character of this fauna is a high degree of melanismus, which is most developed on the islet Pulu Babi. Nearly

    Description: In December 1915 I published a preliminary account of a rare Polynoidworm, Weberia pustulata, dredged by the Siboga Expedition in a considerable depth in the Malayan Archipelago, at the stations 45 and 314, north off Soembawa 1). The species is especially characterized by the total absence of the eyes as well as of the ventral cirri, except in the first setigerous segment; moreover it lacks the notopodial fascicle, whereas the neuropodial one is represented by four hook-shaped setae. Some time ago Hjalmar Ditlevsen kindly forwarded to me the 1st part of his account of the Annelids of the Danish Ingolf-Expedition 2). In this paper I met with the description of a Polynoid-worm, Bathyno\xc3\xab nodulosus, dredged at great depth in the Atlantic Ocean (south off Iceland), that in its essential characters so much agrees with Weberia pustulata, that I concluded the two species to be identical. Unfortunately the Malayan worms had lost the dorsal cirri as well as the elytra, some of which however were preserved in the Atlantic specimen. Having informed Mr. Ditlevsen of my supposition, he answered me, that he also was much inclined to consider the two forms as specifically identical. No doubt it is an interesting contribution to our knowledge of the wide geographical distribution of abyssal forms.

    Description: Lycastis meraukensis n. sp.\nDr. J. W. R. Koch, member of the New-Guinea expedition of the Kon. Nederl. Aardrijkskundig Genootschap in 1904, found at Merauke in decayed wood of the Sago-palm 9 specimens of this worm, viz. 2 large ones, one of which is incomplete and 7 smaller ones. Unfortunately it is not mentioned whether the tree was met with in fresh or brackish water of the river or in salt water at the sea-shore. The dorsal side of some of the worms is dark flesh-coloured, whereas a red brown ring occurs around the anal segment. The largest specimen measures about 150 mm. in length and has a breadth of 7 mm. in the median body-region (without the parapodia); the number of its segments amounts to 170. One of the smaller specimens has a length of 60 mm. and consists of about 150 segments. The head is more broad than long, rounded trapezoidal, provided with a longitudinal median groove. The eyes are situated laterally, in front of the posterior margin of the head; the external of each pair is the largest and it is placed somewhat more anteriorly than the internal.\nThe antennae are short, conical; the palps consist of a stout basal part and a small, papilliform, distal joint. The maxillae are short and stout, provided with six teeth. The longitudinal diameter of the buccal segment is as long as that of the succeeding segment or somewhat shorter. The longest tentacular cirrus reaches to the 2nd or 3rd segment.\nThe Merauke-worm is not slender, rather coarse and it belongs to that group of Lycastis-species, which have the dorsal cirrus enlarged and flattened, to form a leaf-like structure; as the cirri of the succeeding segments are overlaying each other, the worm somewhat resembles a

    Description: In the year 1905 Mr. J. W. van Nouhuys presented to our Museum some Nereis-specimens, collected in the Miha at the South-coast of the isle of Taliaboe, at a distance of two hours from the mouth of the river, that moreover was shut off by a bank of gravel 1). There are eleven specimens, ten females and one male, all mature and in the Heteronereisform. They are characteristically marked; in the median body-region each segment shows on it dorsal side a transverse, black band, narrow in the piddle and growing broader laterally, on the base of the parapodia. Two black spots occur on the dorsal side of each parapodium, whereas the dorsal ligule is also black coloured. Ventrally the segments show a similar marking; however on the base of the parapodium there occurs an oval spot, consisting of longitudinal lines and in front of it a small transverse patch. The anterior ten or twelve segments have a dark brown hue, with pale, oblique stripes on their lateral part; the head also is dark coloured, its posterior part being somewhat paler. The largest specimen has a length of 110 mm. and consists of 225 segments. The head is longer than broad, elongated trapezoidal; its antennae are small, whereas the palps are stout, with a small distal joint. The eyes are large and nearly coalesce. The longest tentacular cirrus extends to the eight segment.\nThe armature of the proboscis consists on area I or a transverse, indistinctly tristichous group of about 13 to 18, distant, hook-shaped paragnaths; on areas II and IV there occurs a curved, distichous or tristichous group of acute, hook-shaped paragnaths; area III has a broad group of 45 to 50 paragnaths, arranged in 5 or 6 rows, the lateral ones being

Unfortunately Izuka had only a single female specimen at his disposal, that was sexually mature and showed some epitocous transformation after the 40th parapodium by the presence of cultrate setae and epitocous lamellae; it had a length of 390 mm. and consisted of 215 segments. Our specimen reaches 350 mm. and the number of segments amounts to about 200; it is also a female, filled with small eggs; however it is not entirely mature and there are neither paddleshaped bristles nor epigamous lamellae. The proboscis was everted and its armature consists of: I = a single indistinct paragnath (in Izuka\'s specimen absent).\nII = a crescent, distichous group of 9 to 10 paragnaths (in Izuka\'s specimen in small groups).\nIV = a crescent group of 16 to 18 paragnaths, the anterior ones arranged in a single row (in Izuka\'s spec. 3 or 4 in a group).\nIII = a single paragnath (in Izuka\'s spec. absent).\nV = 0 (in Izuka\'s spec. absent).\nVI = 8 to 10 paragnaths in a round group (in Izuka\'s spec. 6

    Description: The genus Pyxidognathus was established by A. Milne-Edwards (Bull.\nSoc. Philom. Paris, ser. 7, t. 3, 1878, p. 109) on a species, named by him P. granulosus, that was found in fresh or slightly brackish water in the island of Ovalau. A few months afterwards, in April 1879, de Man described a specimen under the name Hypsilograpsus deldeni nov. gen. nov. spec. (Notes Leyden Mus., v. 1, p. 72), collected by van Delden in 1836 near Manado (Celebes); this specimen, however, was recognized by de Man himself (Notes Leyden Mus., v. 5,1883, p. 159) as being probably identical with the species of Milne-Edwards, having had the opportunity of examining an original drawing of the animal, prepared by the French author.\nDr. de Man has, on my request, kindly sent me this drawing, and after a careful comparison between this and the original Hypsilograpsus specimen, I am fully convinced that the specimens of Milne-Edwards and of de Man belong really to the same species, and that the name Pyxidognathus therefore has priority.\nIn 1888 de Man made known another species of this genus, P. de\xc3\xafanira (Journ. Linn. Soc. London, v. 22, p. 148, pl. 10, f. 4\xe2\x80\x946), observed in mangrove-swamps of the Mergui Archipelago, and finally Alcock described a third species P. fluviatilis (Journ. As. Soc. Description: INTRODUCTION.\nThe Mollusca, recorded in this paper, have been collected by Dr. P. N. VAN KAMPEN and Mr. K. GJELLERUP, during their abode in New Guinea, in 1910 and 1911. The collection is made near the eastern boundary of the Dutch part of the island. \xe2\x80\x9eHollandia" is the name of a camp on the Kajo-bay, a small bay on the western coast of the Humboldtbay, \xe2\x80\x9eHussin" a camp on the Bewani-river, \xe2\x80\x9eZoutbron" (3\xc2\xb0 1\' 13" s., 140\xc2\xb0 57\' 30" e.) a camp on the Begouxe-river. The Mbai and Fat\xc3\xa9 are small rivers, which flow in the Humboldtbay near Hollandia, the Tjah\xc3\xa9 is a small branch of the Mosso. The other localities are to be found on the map which belongs to an article of Capt. Sachse in the \xe2\x80\x9eTijdschrift v. h. Kon. Nederl. Aardrijksk. Gen." (2), dl. XXIX, 1912, p. 36.\nThe collection contains about 60 species, amongst which 9 are new to science; moreover a few new varieties have been described. Perhaps this number of novelties would have been still more considerable, if some of the difficult forms, such as Helicarion, had been at hand in larger number of specimens; but I did not like to encumber science with vague descriptions of new species, which could not be recognized by later students.\nI have to thank Mr. PH. DAUTZENBERG and Mr. G. K. GUDE, for their assistance in identifying some species, which were doubtful to me, and again Mr. J. J. VERWIJNEN for the loan of books from TEYLER\'S Museum at Haarlem.\nI. Siphon.

    Description: Prof. J. F. van Bemmelen in Groningen has presented for the collection Jurriaanse a beautiful male Cethosia, captured on the isle of Boeton in Nov. \'16, by Mr. N. H. Krans, medical officer of the Royal Dutch Navy.\nComparing this Cethosia with specimen in the collection of the Leyden Museum of Natural History, we found there a female, captured on the same isle by Mr. T. Elbert in 1909. As it happened that this specimen was also quite different from all others and no descriptions or figures could be traced in the present litterature, we suppose that we have to do here with a new sub-species, closely allied to the species myrina Feldr.\nDr. van Oort the director of said Museum has been kind enough to lend this female specimen for description.\nThe following characteristics indicate those specimen: With this form the discal white spot on the hind-wing is missing (which spot is identical with the Cethosia spec. from Celebes), only the female shows there a somewhat lighter shade.\nContrary to myrina, where the post-discal band is composed of a row of more or less heart-shaped spots, the male and female show here a band of fairly equal width, only broken at the nervures.\nWe think we have to do with a new sub-species of the genus Cethosia and propose to name it: Cethosia myrina Bemmeleni.\nMale. Upperside, fore wing: The cell crossed by alternate bands of reddish brown and black. The post-discal part between veins 7 and 2 with long light gray streaks on blackish, a single sub-terminal band of narrow brownish gray lines parallel to outer margin. The terminal part
