    Description: This Open Access book examines the link between intercultural competence (IC) and pragmatics by asking frontline modern foreign language teachers in higher education teaching a variety of languages (e.g., Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Swedish) how they conceptualise intercultural competence and which skills, competences and knowledge they consider important in their teaching contexts. The data were collected with an online survey that focused on the relationship between intercultural competence and pragmatics. While international organizations such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or the Council of Europe (CoE) agree that intercultural competence should play an important role in education, it is not always clear what IC may encompass in specific teaching contexts and subject areas. Examining how modern foreign language teachers in higher education conceptualise intercultural competence and the value they attach as well as the attention they give to various areas of pragmatics in their teaching is highly important, since those language professionals may be the final teachers learners encounter during their formal foreign language education. They are therefore in a unique position to shape modern foreign language learners’ intercultural and pragmatic awareness, competence and skills. This book will be of interest to language professionals, modern foreign language teachers and teacher trainers, as well as students and scholars of applied linguistics, pragmatics, and language education.

    Description: This open access book expands the scholarly and policy debates surrounding digital transformation in higher education. The authors adopt a pluralistic conceptual framework which uncovers three analytical elements – contexts, mediations, and type of effects – for unpacking empirical manifestations. The publicly funded higher education systems in Nordic countries provide solid empirical insights into how digital transformations have gained ground before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, and chapter contributions demonstrate how international digitalisation trends (such as in the global EdTech industry) impact on the core activities of higher education institutions (HEIs). The findings underscore the importance of assessments that consider multiple sub-systems within HEIs, as well as the complex relationships between them. By unpacking Nordic dynamics in the light of global processes and developments, the approach adopted and the results generated are of relevance to a much broader, global audience of students and researchers in higher education.

    Description: This open access book offers a systematic survey of the attitudes and values of European political scientists. It builds a structural interpretation based on empirical data, as well as offering reflections on the future structure of the discipline. In the middle of a delicate phase of changes marked by the effects of pandemic and the war in Ukraine, we need to pay attention to the factors that are affecting not only the ‘objects’ of Political Science as a discipline but also its interactions with the world around it. First, this book asks to what extent the work of European political scientists is impacted by the current change. Second, their attitudes and predisposition about the future goals of the discipline are analysed. In the final chapter, the authors seek to understand to what extent a diffuse but still not completely institutionalized academic discipline will be able to produce a comprehensive impact around the European society, in order to be more visible and effective in policy making and policy processes.

The study develops an empirically founded profile of changes in the economy and society in Germany until 2030. It identifies skilled worker bottlenecks and offers recommendations for ensuring a sufficient supply of workers. That includes the integration of migrants, an expansion of the adult education system and a long-term, forward-looking family policy on the basis of an improved compatibility of family and work life.     Description: The Baltic Sea Region is an important example of the regionalisation of international academic cooperation. This is the conclusion of the 17th DAAD study on international scientific mobility. On an annual basis, the paper documents the status quo as well as developments in the internationality of German science and universities. Die Themenfelder des Bandes umfassen aus unterschiedlichen disziplinären und interdisziplinären Perspektiven die Berufsausbildung und Berufliche Bildung in gewerblich-technischen Domänen, Ausbildung und Professionalisierung von Berufsschullehrkräften und Lehrerbildung, Berufliche Schulen und berufsschulisches Lernen, (Fach-)Didaktik und betriebliches Lehren und Lernen. Dabei werden die regionalen Bezüge von Klaus Jenewein ebenso sichtbar wie seine Nähe zur Modellversuchsforschung, zu Ansätzen responsiver Begleitforschung, zur Wissenschaft-Praxis-Kommunikation und zum Design-Based-Research.

    Description: "The third long-term forecast by Economix estimates the implications of the recent influx of refugees on the German labour market as well as the qualification structure among the employees. At the same time, it forecasts the opportunities and risks of digitalisation. All analyses come to the conclusion that the integration of refugees into the labour market represents the primary task of the coming five to ten years. Indeed, the immigration of refugees rejuvenates the population. However, it also causes a decline in the qualification structure of labour supply. The authors emphasise both the necessity of extensive and systematic further education programs for all employees as well as the importance of developing educational services for refugees and encouraging them to participate in vocational education. The reconciliation of family and an academic career constitutes the central issue of the report. Other topics are work and employment conditions, qualification conditions during the doctoral phase, as well as career paths and perspectives, particularly during the post doctoral phase. Topics such as mobility behaviour and contributions to the research, teaching, and transfer of junior scientists as well as the educational returns of a doctoral degree are also addressed. The report is primarily based on data from official statistics and surveys conducted on a regular basis. At the same time, the paper examines the collected data with greater emphasis on the comparability and classification of the findings. In ihren Ergebnissen beschreibt die Autorin das Erkenntnispotenzial des subjektiven Alters als Untersuchungsvariable und skizziert mögliche Forschungsfelder, die unter diesem Aspekt bearbeitet werden könnten.

Rather than writing a singular defence of the humanities against economic rationalism, Zoe Hope Bulaitis constructs a nuanced map of the intersections of value in the humanities, encompassing an exploration of policy engagement, scientific discourses, fictional representation, and the humanities in public life. The book articulates a kaleidoscopic range of humanities practices which demonstrate that although recent policy encourages higher education to be entirely motivated by outcomes, fiscal targets, and the acquisition of employability skills, the humanities continue to inspire and aspire beyond these limits.
