Description: Dieser Open-Access-Sammelband hinterfragt, wie sich internationale Kulturzusammenarbeit zwischen Ländern unterschiedlicher Kultursysteme und -traditionen erreichen lässt. In Deutschland ist Auswärtige Kulturpolitik von dem Gedanken geleitet, dass globale Herausforderungen Multilateralismus erfordern. Im chinesischen Diskurs dagegen finden andere Kernbegriffe wie z.B. „Tianxia“ Verwendung, die im nicht-chinesischen Kontext einer Interpretation bedürfen. Um der Differenz – aber auch den Gemeinsamkeiten – auf den Grund zu gehen, untersuchen Wissenschaftler*innen und Praktiker*innen aus China und Deutschland Selbst- und Fremdwahrnehmungen sowie Kooperationen in kulturellen Begegnungen. Auf diese Weise sollen Grundlagen für ein besseres gegenseitiges Verständnis sowie für kulturelle Kooperation zwischen beiden Ländern ermöglicht werden.

Description: This PhD thesis summarises a study of the nanostructuration of single molecule magnets and organic radicals on metallic surfaces, carried out by the author in collaboration with a number of research groups in Italy, France, Germany and Israel. A tailored approach was followed to graft individual molecules to the surface, to characterise the morphology of the functionalised surfaces with standard scanning probe microscopy and to investigate their magnetic properties using X-Ray circular dichroism. The aim of this project was to develop the initial basis for the organisation and addressing of magnetic molecules with a view to the development of single molecule devices for data storage and molecular-spintronic applications.

Description: In diesem Open-Access-Buch geht Marco Lünich der Annahme verbreiteter Glaubensüberzeugungen von der Qualität und Wirkmächtigkeit von Big Data nach und analysiert die miteinander in Bezug stehenden gesellschaftlichen Überzeugungen von Erkenntnis- und Nutzengewinnen aus Big Data. Das Aufkommen der digitalen Gesellschaft ist eng verbunden mit wirkmächtigen Narrativen wie etwa der Informations- und Wissensgesellschaft. In diesem Zusammenhang wird auch die Möglichkeit der weitreichenden Sammlung und Auswertung von großen digitalen Datenbeständen betont, den sogenannten Big Data. Hervorgehoben wird dabei die besondere Bedeutung von Big Data für die gesellschaftliche Erkenntnis- und Wissensproduktion und den hieraus gezogenen Nutzen. Daher wurde in der Literatur vielfach vermutet, dass sich die Überzeugung von den vermeintlichen Konsequenzen einer Quantifizierung der Welt und vor allem des Sozialen auch in den Köpfen der Menschen verfängt und hierdurch einstellungs- und handlungsrelevant wird. Dieser vermutete Zusammenhang wird im vorliegenden Buch in unterschiedlichen Forschungszusammenhängen des Einsatzes von Technologien Künstlicher Intelligenz empirisch geprüft.

Description: The research is aimed at investigating the changes in the methods of "construction" of representations of the territory due to the communicative evolution of disciplinary statutes and to the increasingly stringent and widespread use of new information and communication technologies. It focuses its reflection on the field of representations intended to substantiate the local and territorial project dimension. The focus of the work is on the methodological value and possible process innovation, rather than on the simple description of an expert technical product. The emphasis is on the possible value of building knowledge of territorial representations (heritage elaborations or project scenarios) drawn up through collective action.

Description: The volume collects the contributions presented at the XVII national congress of AIMETA. The contributions are grouped according to the various sectors of theoretical and applied mechanics and are offered by a vast scientific community. In addition to the classical sectors, themes of interdisciplinary significance and of considerable interest and highly innovative content were added, for the analysis of which small exchange symposia were proposed. Organised according to 52 sessions (plenary and parallel), the volume contains 290 scientific works that are mainly the result of international cooperation. Therefore, the work represents a significant picture of the current situation and future prospects for mechanics.

Description: TBX genes belong to a family of homeotic genes (t-boxes) for which it has been proved that gene mutations have serious consequences on the development. In particular, there is significant evidence to support the involvement of the TBX1 gene in DiGeorge / Velocardiofacial syndrome (DGS/VCFS) and it has been proved that the TBX3 and TBX5 genes are implicated, respectively, in UMS (Ulnar Mammary Syndhrome) and in Holt-Oram syndrome (HOS). The book collects information available in the literature up to October 2001 on human TBX genes. The review of the data allowed to come to interesting considerations and offers ideas for orienting further research.

Description: The volume deals with the theme of urban landscape design, taking into account in particular the experience of “green belts” and “green wedges”. The limit landscape project carries out experimentations in the peri-urban territories of Florence and is not aimed at the reconstruction of ideal limits to the city; it is rather aimed at offering instances of rebalancing, connotation and regenerating typical of border territories experiencing indetermination of identity characters and strong reductions in landscape quality.

Description: The book examines the works of three English modernists also dealing with the iconic figure of Elizabeth Tudor. They are works focusing on the queen by Giles Lytton Strachey ("Elizabeth and Essex") and Edith Sitwell ("Fanfare for Elizabeth" and "The Queens and The Hive") and the biographical sketches written by Virginia Woolf in "Orlando" and in some short stories. The figure of the queen is seen as biographical object/subject of the biographers who write about her, investigating her gender in a new way thanks to the tools provided by Freudian studies.

Description: This volume collects the best dissertations from the academic years 1999/00 and 2000/01 by students of the European Master in Work Sciences of the Department of Political Sciences "Cesare Alfieri" in Florence. The contributions focus on the theme of labour and its regulation in European countries, analysing aspects such as work flexibility, training, corporate industrial relations, corporate social responsibility, the promotion of participation of women and disabled people in the job market . These issues constitute privileged points of observation to highlight both the effects of promoting change in the process of European political integration and the role played by the presence of certain institutional architectures related to welfare, economic and work regulation systems that continue to differ from country to country. Looking at the coexistence between stability and change with a multidisciplinary and comparative approach like the one used in the works collected here is like using a kaleidoscope that helps to shed light on the multiple balances and on the different development paths that characterise the so-called "European social model".

Description: ​In diesem Open-Access-Buch wird die subjektive Wahrnehmung und Bewältigung von Armut im Kontext der strukturellen Einbindung der Betroffenen konzeptualisiert und erfasst. In einer reichen Gesellschaft arm zu sein, bedeutet nicht nur ein materielles Problem, sondern auch die Infragestellung der sozialen und gesellschaftlichen Zugehörigkeit der Betroffenen. Um dem zu entgehen, sind die Akteure auf voneinander abgrenzbare Kontexte in ihrem Netzwerk angewiesen, in denen sie Anerkennung und Teilhabe generieren können. Wer in dieser Lage auf sich selbst zurückgeworfen ist, erfährt Armut als die Zerstörung seiner bzw. ihrer Identität als respektables Mitglied der Gesellschaft. Der Kampf gegen die Armut darf daher nicht gegen die Armen geführt werden, sondern muss ein Kampf um Orte und Gelegenheiten sein, an denen wir zeigen können, dass es (auch) auf uns ankommt. Es zeigt sich, dass materielle Knappheit in Abhängigkeit der sozialen Einbindung unterschiedlich wahrgenommen wird. Die Bewältigungschancen verschlechtern sich, je weniger Gelegenheitsstrukturen zur Erreichung von Anerkennung und Teilhabe den Befragten in ihrem sozial-räumlichen Umfeld zur Verfügung stehen.

Description: Im Zuge schulischer Reformen wurden Aufgaben der Personalentwicklung von der Schulaufsicht an Schulen delegiert. Für die Verankerung von Personalentwicklungsaufgaben an Einzelschulen spielen rechtliche Regelungen eine entscheidende Rolle. Description: The use of substances for pharmaceutical use, either as disinfectants or used clinically for diagnostic purposes, cosmetic products or personal hygiene, is widespread in all areas of daily and working life. Recently, the research on environmental contamination caused by PPCPs (Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products) has been focused on the consequences deriving from the dispersion of antibiotic or hormonal substances, in relation to the phenomenon of the increase in bacterial resistance and to interference on the endocrine systems respectively. The research described in this volume is part of the national and international studies on the problem, aims at contributing in the expansion of knowledge on these themes and has as its objective the determination of the possible presence of drug residues in the Arno river.

Description: The volume collects the texts of the interventions held on December 17, 2004 in the Aula Magna of the University of Florence during the presentation of two volumes of the work published by Olschki publishing house “L'Università degli Studi di Firenze 1924-2004” (The University of Florence 1924-2004). After the introduction by the Rector Magnificus Augusto Marinelli, the work was discussed by historians Gian Paolo Brizzi and Paolo Prodi of the University of Bologna, Romano Paolo Coppini of the University of Pisa, and by professors Francesco Gurrieri and Sandro Rogari. Description: For some years now the Universities have assumed a dynamic role in fostering the enhancement of enterprise, making a direct contribution to the strategic management of intellectual property and the transfer of research deliverables, as well as in the training of potential entrepreneurs and the creation of structures offering support to new enterprises. Through the elaboration of empirical evidence from two quite different and hardly comparable institutional contexts – the American Babson College and the Italian University of Florence – this study analyses the potential activities of entrepreneurial matrix, in terms of relations, resources and incentives, offered for the use of young businesses in the start-up phase.

Description: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man presents a non-linear compositional progression, characterised by continual fractures, bifurcations and revisions; the genetic dossier includes pre-compositional notes and works that were never published, such as Epiphanies, A Portrait of the Artist and Stephen Hero. The genetic analysis of this long process of writing, the documentation of which covers a period of around fourteen years, reveals not only how the Portrait was conceived and composed, but also Joyce's evolution as a writer from the very first evidence of his literary activity. This new perspective on Joyce's mode of composition opens the way to a range of potential interpretations of the individual texts, as well as methodological and theoretical insights regarding genetic criticism.

Description: This study represents the continuation and in part the completion of a research study within an Islamic educational and philanthropic institution, currently located in Greek territory. Through repeated inspections and a long work of comparison, not only have the volumes kept at the institution of Kavála been catalogued, but the composition of the entire library has also been almost entirely reconstructed, identifying additional funds belonging to it. Furthermore, the research examines the implications useful for delineating both the cultural profile of the Institution and a particular historical phase for the methodological and content innovations introduced in the transmission of knowledge within the Islamic world.

Description: What are the cognitive and expressive choices involved in the concrete practices of creation of graphical representations of the territory? And what is the effectiveness of graphics in the government of the territory and its changes? These questions are the basis of the preparation of this work. The essay proposes and tests a hypothesis of representation of the "statute of places", that is, of an instrument regulating the transformations of the city and of the territory based on the recognition of common values, a little binding, but indicative for the determination of plans and projects.

Description: Die Open-Access-Publikation präsentiert umfangreiche empirische Analysen zu Halte- und Bleibeorientierung Geflüchteter und richtet den Blick dabei besonders auf die Situation der ländlichen Regionen Deutschlands. Migrations- und Integrationsforschung in Deutschland war bislang überwiegend auf Großstädte ausgerichtet. Durch den vermehrten Zuzug geflüchteter Menschen seit 2014 sehen sich jedoch auch Kleinstädte und Dörfer in ländlichen Regionen verstärkt mit Aufgaben der Aufnahme und Integration von Geflüchteten konfrontiert. Ziel dieses Buches ist es, empirisch fundiert zu beantworten, unter welchen Voraussetzungen und wie humanitäres Engagement und ländliche Entwicklung erfolgreich verbunden werden können und wie dies von Politik und Zivilgesellschaft positiv beeinflusst werden kann.

Description: In diesem Open-Access-Buch wird unter Rückgriff auf einen multimodalen Diskursbegriff das Vorgehen für eine soziotechnisch fundierte Dispositivanalyse entwickelt, die auf die produktive Rolle von Materialität in Diskursen fokussiert. Mit der Frage nach der Stellung von Artefakten in Diskursen werden grundlegende Aspekte der Diskurstheorie und -analytik adressiert, die sich vor allem auf die Bestimmung der Ränder von Diskursen sowie der diskursiven Wirkmächtigkeit von Dingen beziehen. Auf diesem Wege wird eine Diskussion um die passenden konzeptuellen, begrifflichen und methodischen Instrumente diskursanalytischer Studien herausgefordert, zu der dieses Buch einen theoretischen und empirischen Beitrag leistet. Die entwickelte multimodale Dispositivanalyse wird im Rahmen einer qualitativ-empirischen Studie zu Drogentestpraktiken am Arbeitsplatz und im Straßenverkehr exemplarisch umgesetzt. Drogentests werden im Zuge dessen als Diskursaktanten verstanden, die im soziotechnischen Zusammenspiel mit den menschlichen Anwender*innen an der dispositiven Konstruktion von Wirklichkeit wirkmächtig beteiligt sind.

Am Beispiel des Psycho-Franchise veranschaulicht die Autorin, dass die wirkungsvolle und anhaltende Prägnanz von Genresignaturen aus komplexen Semantisierungs- und Differenzierungsprozessen resultiert, die zwischen Produktionskontexten, Distributionsnetzwerken und vielfältigen Diskursivierungen verlaufen. Indem sie in den materialnahen Analysen ‚Genre‘ zusammen mit Gendervorstellungen in den Fokus rückt, zeigt sie zudem, wie im Mantel der ikonischen Genregeschichte aktuelle Fragen und kulturelle Vorstellungen von Geschlechtlichkeit, Sexualität und Weißsein verhandelt werden. Description: In the XI-XIII centuries the monasteries experienced a bigger freedom from the interference of the dioceses and were able to benefit from the exemption to interact with the local dominant classes. This new dynamic in relationships had an impact on the transformations of both the ecclesiastical structures and the political and economic assets in the territory. The authors analyse the phenomenon from different points of view, always paying attention to the sources and addressing topics such as: the interventions of the papacy in order to influence the constitutional configuration of Orders and congregations; the forms of the documents issued for this purpose by the pontifical chancery; the intricate relations between the papacy, bishops and exempt monasteries; the relationships between the latter and local societies.

Description: This Open-Access-Book analyzes the acceptance of sustainable freight transport and suggests a new framework for policy measures to decarbonize freight transport. Despite intense political endeavors, the environmental performance of the transport system has not improved in the previous years. It seems that the existing measures are not sufficient to motivate transport users to implement sustainable freight transport strategies. The case of three different strategies for sustainable freight transport is studied: horizontal collaboration in a Physical Internet network, multimodal freight transport and liquefied natural gas (LNG) as alternative truck fuel. Each of these three strategies falls within a different pillar of the avoid-shift-reduce framework. The determinants of acceptance and suggested policy measures in this study reflect transport users’ needs towards sustainable freight transport. This should support policy makers and the logistics industry to implement sustainable practices and achieve the ambitious emission targets by decarbonizing freight transport.

Description: The Toulon-Verona Conference was founded in 1998 by prof. Claudio Baccarani of the University of Verona, Italy, and prof. Michel Weill of the University of Toulon, France. It has been organized each year in a different place in Europe in cooperation with a host university (Toulon 1998, Verona 1999, Derby 2000, Mons 2001, Lisbon 2002, Oviedo 2003, Toulon 2004, Palermo 2005, Paisley 2006, Thessaloniki 2007, Florence, 2008). Originally focusing on higher education institutions, the research themes have over the years been extended to the health sector, local government, tourism, logistics, banking services. Around a hundred delegates from about twenty different countries participate each year and nearly one thousand research papers have been published over the last ten years, making of the conference one of the major events in the field of quality in services.

Description: Purinergic nucleotides and nucleosides (ATP, ADP, AMP and adenosine) are essential intracellular metabolites involved in a number of cellular processes, from energy supply to protein phosphorylation. However, in the last years, several studies demonstrated their involvement in cell signalling by the activation of specific membrane receptors (P1 and P2) and their role as neurotransmitters began to be investigated. The present work was aimed to clarify the effects of purinergic neurotransmission in different cell systems by using electrophysiological techniques. Relevant results of this research include the observation that P1 and P2 receptors play a deleterious role during "in vitro" ischemia in the rat brain, and the first demonstration of P2 receptor expression and function in a line of adult human mesenchymal stem cells.

Description: In diesem Open-Access-Buch beleuchtet Florian Fuchs den historischen Diskurs um eine Integration ethischer Fragestellungen in die betriebswirtschaftliche Forschung. Vor dem Hintergrund einer bisher fehlenden originären Mesoethik entwickelt er mit einem Rekurs auf die Erkenntnisse der neueren Systemtheorie eine neue Unternehmensethikkonzeption. Diese ermöglicht erstmalig die Konzeption einer genuinen Unternehmensethik als strukturiertes Legitimitätsmanagement. Seit der Begründung der Betriebswirtschaftslehre Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts wird um die Sinnhaftigkeit und Möglichkeit einer fundierten Beschäftigung mit normativen Aussagen im Allgemeinen, sowie einer Forschungstätigkeit in der Domäne der Wirtschaftsethik im Speziellen, intensiv wie kontrovers gerungen. Dabei bleibt vor dem Hintergrund zahlreicher Unternehmensskandale und einer zunehmenden gesellschaftlichen Kritik an der Wirtschaftspraxis eine kritische Reflexion wirtschaftlichen Handelns hochrelevant – wobei allerdings die Frage zu stellen ist, wie eine wirtschaftsethische Beschäftigung für die BWL wissenschaftshistorisch informiert wie auch wissenschaftstheoretisch fundiert zu begründen wäre.

Description: The organisation of the territory is the outcome of strategies of varying scope, in which a number of agents interact to shape out the areas of operation. The Liguria reality is probed here through four different situations - separated in chronological terms but sharing the poor visibility and limited efficacy of the fortified settlements. These focus on Genoa, both in the definition of its hinterland between the tenth and the eleventh centuries, and in establishing the bulwarks of coastal territorial expansion in the twelfth; the powerful groups of feudal lords who remoulded the rural settlement layout in the thirteenth century; finally, a village of the hinterland explored right through to the modern age.

Description: This book is a collection of the proceedings of the study seminar held in Verona on 14 November 2003. This was the occasion for the presentation of the results of archive research performed by young researchers on the Jewish presence in numerous cities and smaller towns of the Venetian hinterland in the fifteenth century (Vicenza, Verona, Treviso, Feltre, and the minor centres of the Polesine and Verona and Vicenza territory). The various themes that are developed though attentive and documented analysis include: the autonomous initiative of the civic communities in the relation with the Jewish moneylenders and the attitude of Venice, divided between protection and the anti-Jewish tensions that were widespread among the lagoon nobility; the encounter and dialectic between the Ashkenazi and Italian components in the communities settled within the cities and hamlets of Veneto; the difference of the social and cultural climate between the first and second half of the fifteenth century, marked by incisive Franciscan preaching and attempts at expulsion from the cities; a look 'from the inside' which opens up the role of women in the economic life of the Jewish communities. Over twenty years after the convention on 'The Jews and Venice' promoted by the Fondazione Cini, these contributions illustrate the revival of study and the ever-present need for comparison and exchange on the issue of the Jewish presence in Italy.

Description: Over the last few years the landscape debate has taken a new turn, shifting from concerns of conservation and protection towards the search for methods of intervention and regulations that consent a development of the territory compatible with the mutation of collective requirements. This is based on a recognition of the intrinsically dynamic nature of the landscape, conceived both in its matter and in its essence as a social construct. This shift has been sanctioned by the European Landscape Convention, which includes among the objectives of landscape policy the creation of new landscapes "to satisfy the aspirations of the population involved". This book focuses on the investigation of the conditions of the context that make innovation more or less appropriate. This is assessed as a design approach (and hence no distinction will be made between design action and planning action) that addresses the "rules" dictated by what already exists. The social recognition of their value defines the "degree of freedom" of the invention. At times the rule is the very object of the project, that is the intervention is demanded precisely to conserve or valorise a landscape that is considered of exceptional value (as in the case of protected landscapes). In other cases it is a question of implementing projects with different objectives, while respecting the rules of the landscape context. Frequently the landscape does not feature a single, unequivocal and legible system of rules, but a stratification that may be incomplete, fragmentary or conflicting: the project may then attempt to knit these up, and this mechanism may trigger its added value. There are also cases in which the rule is too weak to support a revival, or is "banal", in short can be considered worth "sacrificing" to the introduction of a new system of values. Taken as a whole, the essays explore cases of landscape design, from planning to the art of the garden, identifying the appropriateness of the innovation in terms of an awareness of the rules and the intentional affirmation and expression of self. The articles contained in the book were composed specifically for the International Convention on "Innovation and Rules in Landscape Design" held in Florence on 22 and 23 November 2002, organised by the Research Doctorate in Landscape Design of the University of Florence.

Per verificare la definizione di Lopez di città come "stato d'animo", vengono considerati temi quali la percezione e la memoria del tempo (tanto reale quanto mitico), l'elaborazione di modelli di comportamento (quello cavalleresco), il condizionamento dell'ambiente urbano fino alla creazione di un "paesaggio sonoro" della città. Nella concretezza delle testimonianze dei contemporanei emerge il significato di "essere cittadini" nel medioevo italiano.

In particolare la tradizione di ricerca denominata CSCL, o computer supported collaborative learning, in oltre dieci anni di studi, ha evidenziato le potenzialità di questi strumenti all'interno di dinamiche di apprendimento collaborativo. Questa ricerca, che prende le mosse dalla rilettura delle posizioni storico culturali vygotskijane, nell'unire riflessioni pedagogiche ai contributi dell'ergonomia cognitiva ed agli studi sull'interazione "uomo-macchina", si preoccupa di focalizzare gli elementi teorici, metodologici e progettuali più opportuni per facilitare le pratiche di apprendimento collaborativo in rete.

Description: La tesi di dottorato qui presentata indaga il paesaggio storico delle Cinque Terre attraverso l'analisi della multiforme iconografi a territoriale, delle descrizioni del passato e degli antichi catasti descrittivi. Il fine è quello di mettere a punto una metodologia (estensibile eventualmente ad altri contesti) per la valutazione qualitativa del paesaggio, dove la misura è data dalle condizioni di stato astratte messe in luce da parametri detti "indicatori storici". Description: It is by now common knowledge that one of the aspects upon which the survival of the University depends is how it will make the best possible use of the new technologies (e-learning). Despite the acceptance of this principle, difficulties arise when one attempts to proceed from the mere declaration to actually planning activities and putting them into effect. Description: This book, generated by the encounter between two schools - the Italian early mediaeval and the Argentine late antique - ranges from Italy to Gaul and the Eastern Mediterranean over a timespan from the third/fourth to the eighth centuries. It introduces a world polarised between an East destined to be divided between Byzantium and Islam, and a West composed of the post-Roman barbarian societies. The East, rooted within the Roman-Hellenistic heritage, represents a source of religious experiences which profoundly influence the West. With reference to Italy, the study focuses on an analysis of the Episcopal network, the emergence of the Benedictine Rule, and the correspondence of Gregory the Great. In the passage from East to West, the 'new' Barbarian societies emerge in the front line, proving that they too were seeking out ancient roots, both in Gaul and in Italy, the latter being partly still linked to Byzantium and partly under the dominion of the Lombards. Finally various crucial aspects of the Lombard kingdom - which proves to be profoundly permeated by the legacy of Rome - are addressed, including royalty, the capitals and the law, through the analysis of both written and archaeological sources.

Um die für eine Begrenzung des Klimawandels und den Erhalt unserer natürlichen Lebensgrundlagen unabdingbaren gesellschaftlichen und wirtschaftlichen Transformationen durchzusetzen, müssen wir es wagen, eine andere Welt zu denken und die Schranken in unseren Köpfen hinterfragen. Description: The contribution made by Mario Ridolfi to the construction of a modern Italian identity, in its regional aspect, materialised in his Umbrian designs, starting from the watershed of 1961 which marked the voluntary exile of the architect in Marmore. Through the analysis of his architectural creations, the book reconstructs the mental itinerary pursued by Ridolfi in the elaboration of the Umbrian works, casting light on the architect's interest in the material consistency of the architectural organism, studied in the most minute detail so that the perfection of the work can render it a "living thing". In Ridolfi's work, spirit and matter, art and technology are amalgamated into a single object which always tends to the absolute. Bound up with this, in a play of continual cross-reference, is the study of the specific features of the Umbrian landscape, dominated by the figure of St. Francis of Assisi, as a fruitful and intriguing comparison to map out the contours of the research.
