    Description: The risk estimation of precipitation events with high recurrence periods is difficult due to the limited time scale with meteorological observations. A homogenous distribution of rain gauges, especially in mountainous terrain, is also hardly convertible. In this study an analytical model with a high spatial resolution, designed for stochastic simulations of flood-related precipitation, is developed, evaluated and applied to different investigation areas in Germany.

    Description: Wie konstituieren sich Gedichtbände – nach dem freien Vers – zu einem ästhetischen Ganzen? Anhand dreier Analysen von Gedichtbänden seit 2000 lote ich unter dem Paradigma formaler Wiederholung unabhängig von traditionellen Parametern wie Reim und Metrum Varianten der Konstituierung und Darstellung ästhetischer Ganzheit aus. So unterschiedlich die drei untersuchten AutorInnen – Ulf Stolterfoht, Oswald Egger und Monika Rinck – auch arbeiten, ihre Bücher (fachsprachen, nihilum album, Honigprotokolle) sind geprägt von formalen Gesamtkonzepten, die ich entsprechend unter den Bezeichnungen Populationen und branding, Zeit-Räume und Verortung sowie Protokollieren und Fest-schreiben zu erschliessen versuche. Trotz ihrer Unterschiedlichkeit spielt, so der methodische Leitgedanke, in allen drei Fällen das Denkmodell einer gegensätzlichen Gleichzeitigkeit von Kontinuität und Diskontinuität, das ich in Anlehnung an den evolutionstheoretischen Begriff des punctuated equilibrium herausarbeite, eine prägende Rolle. Dieses Denkmodell verbinde ich in der Folge mit den Begriffen einer kontinuierlichen Praxis des Denkens bzw. Schreibens und eines diskontinuierlichen Artefakts, deren Gegensätzlichkeit sich in der Gesamtdarstellung der jeweiligen Gedichtbände widerspiegelt. Unter dieser Voraussetzung trete ich an die Gedichtbände mit einer synchronen Methodik heran, sodass ich mich unter Ausschluss der diachronen, d.h. werkhistorischen, Perspektive auf die immanente Systematik der Bände konzentrieren kann. In der Wiederholung als Bedingung einer solchen Systematik finde ich die zeitweilige Stabilisierung einer Praxis, die ebenso Bedingung der poetischen Produktion wie Bedingung ihrer differenziellen Modifikation ist. Im Rückbezug auf das punctuated equilibrium taucht der Rhythmus des Wechselspiels zwischen der Kontinuität einer stabilen Praxis und der Diskontinuität einer Modifikation dieser Praxis als Grundmotiv auf.

Untersucht wurden zum einen die Unsicherheiten bezüglich des Einflusses der RCMs und hydrologischen Modelle auf die Endergebnisse sowie die zukünftige Abflussentwicklung in einem Teileinzugsgebiet der Oberen Spree KATASTER-BESCHREIBUNG: Bei der Betrachtung von langjährigen Abflussmittelwerten trägt die Wahl des RCMs die größte Unsicherheit zur Gesamtbandbreite des Modellensembles bei. Die Ergebnisse der hydrologischen Modelle unterscheiden sich nur geringfügig. Die Vulnerabilität des Einzugsgebiets bezüglich klimatischer Änderungen bleibt unbeantwortet, da zum Teil gegensätzlich Entwicklung der tatsächlichen Verdunstung und des Abflusses simuliert werden aufgrund der unterschiedlichen Niederschlagsentwicklungen der RCM KATASTER-DETAIL: Delta Temp: Alle RCMs (STAR (+2.4 °C), WettReg (+1.9 °C), CCLM (+1.6 °C), REMO (+1.2 °C)) Temperaturanstieg bis 2060 (dynamische RCMs schwächeren Anstieg im Vergleich zu den statistischen RCMs) Delta ETP: Alle RCMs Anstieg der potenziellen Verdunstung (ETP, Ansatz: Penman-Monteith).     Description: Earthquake nucleation requires reduction of frictional strength t = µ (s - p) with slip or slip rate, where µ, s n , and p are the friction coefficient, normal stress, and fluid pressure, respectively. For rate state µ at fixed (s - p), instabilities can occur when d µ ss /dv 〈 0, where µ ss is the steady state friction and v is slip rate. Shear heating increases p and, if dilatancy and pore pressure diffusion are limited, will cause t to decrease. We examine how frictional weakening, shear heating, and dilatancy determine stability in simplified fault models. Mature faults have a thin (〈1 mm) shear zone on which slip is concentrated, embedded within a ~0.1 m wide fault core with permeability of order 10-21 to 10-19 m2, surrounded by rock of variable but higher permeability. Faults with dµ ss /dv 〉 0 are linearly stable at all wavelengths to adiabatic perturbations when v is near a plate rate if the wall rock permeability exceeds a critical value that is orders of magnitude less than inferred. Thus shear heating alone cannot then nucleate unstable slip; frictional weakening is required. However, shear heating can produce inertial instability on velocity strengthening faults following strong stress perturbations. On faults with dµ ss /dv 〈 0, shear heating increases pore pressure faster than is dissipated by Darcy flow at slip speeds of order 1 mm s-1. For faults bounding half-spaces with uniform thermal and hydraulic properties, µ dot above p exceeds inline equation (s - p) during nucleation for slip speeds in excess of 10-2 to 101 mm s-1, depending on parameters chosen. Thus thermal effects are likely to dominate late in the nucleation process, well before seismic waves are radiated, as well as during fast seismic slip. By the time shear heating effects dominate, inertial slip is imminent (~10-1 s), so that time-to-failure calculations based on rate state friction are not biased by thermal pressurization.

    Description: The Global Strain Rate Map project II-8, initiated in 1998 by the International Lithosphere Program (ILP), provides constraints for understanding continental dynamics and for quantifying seismic hazards in general. To date, the Global Strain Rate Map (GSRM) model is a numerical velocity gradient tensor field solution (i.e., spatial variations of horizontal strain rate tensor components and rotation rates) for the entire Earth surface [Kreemer et al., 2003]. The global model consists of 25 rigid spherical plates and ~25,000 0.6 degree x 0.5 degree deformable grid areas within the diffuse plate boundary zones which lie between these plates (e.g., western North America, central Asia, the Alpine-Himalaya belt). This model provides an estimate of the horizontal strain rates, rotation rates, and velocity fields for the diffuse plate boundary zones as well as an estimate of the motions of the spherical caps

    Description: Subduction zones generate the world's largest and most destructive earthquakes and most of the world' s destructive tsunamis, as has been recently shown by the devastating Andaman-Sumatra event on 26 December 2004. Understanding the factors leading to Earth's largest and most destructive earthquakes is not only an "obviously important" goal, as stated in the U.S. National Science Foundation's Margins Science Report 2004, but it is also an "utmost important" goal for the whole geoscience community. Interrelated with this topic are still unsolved questions in seismology: Why do subduction zones occasionally generate the largest known (Mw 〉 9) earthquakes? And why are only a few subduction zones capable of generating Mw ~= 9 earthquakes while the rest only produce up to Mw ~= 7.5?

    Description: Great earthquakes in subduction zones occur after stable slip in the proto-seismogenic zone transitions to the unstable slip that characterizes seismogenic zones. Subducted material input to seismogenic zones affects this transition. Material structure, lithology, and physical properties change progressively during subduction, and according to current hypotheses, specific material transformations trigger the stable to unstable slip transition. Where accretion dominates a convergent margin, material input is trench sediment that is easily drill-sampled. However, where erosion dominates a margin, material input is unknown because it originates along the base of the upper plate and alters differently. The depth at which material is eroded lies beyond the sampling capabilities of past scientific ocean drilling, so the proto-seismogenic zone transformed material has never been drill-sampled; nor does geophysics resolve its structure, lithology, and physical properties. The Japanese riser drill ship Chikyu in the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IOcean Drilling Program) overcomes this difficulty. Preparing a site for deep drilling is a much greater task than preparing the shallower sites of past programs, so this is accomplished during workshops.
