Description: In principle, measurements of high-frequency acoustic scattering from oceanic microstructure and zooplankton across a broad range of frequencies can reduce the ambiguities typically associated with the interpretation of acoustic scattering at a single frequency or a limited number of discrete narrowband frequencies. With this motivation, a high-frequency broadband scattering system has been developed for investigating zooplankton and microstructure, involving custom modifications of a commercially available system, with almost complete acoustic coverage spanning the frequency range 150–600 kHz. This frequency range spans the Rayleigh-to-geometric scattering transition for some zooplankton, as well as the diffusive roll-off in the spectrum for scattering from turbulent temperature microstructure. The system has been used to measure scattering from zooplankton and microstructure in regions of non-linear internal waves. The broadband capabilities of the system provide a continuous frequency response of the scattering over a wide frequency band, and improved range resolution and signal-to-noise ratios through pulse-compression signal-processing techniques. System specifications and calibration procedures are outlined and the system performance is assessed. The results point to the utility of high-frequency broadband scattering techniques in the detection, classification, and under certain circumstances, quantification of zooplankton and microstructure.

Description: Penelope-like elements (PLEs) are a relatively little studied class of eukaryotic retroelements, distinguished by the presence of the GIY-YIG endonuclease domain, the ability of some representatives to retain introns, and the similarity of PLE-encoded reverse transcriptases to telomerases. Although these retrotransposons are abundant in many animal genomes, the reverse transcriptase moiety can also be found in several protists, fungi, and plants, indicating its ancient origin. A comprehensive phylogenetic analysis of PLEs was conducted, based on extended sequence alignments and a considerably expanded data set. PLEs exhibit the pattern of evolution similar to that of non-LTR retrotransposons, which form deep-branching clades dating back to the Precambrian era. However, PLEs seem to have experienced a much higher degree of lineage losses than non-LTR retrotransposons. It is suggested that PLEs and non-LTR retrotransposons are included into a larger eTPRT (eukaryotic target-primed) group of retroelements, characterized by 5' truncation, variable target-site duplication, and the potential of the 3' end to participate in formation of non-autonomous derivatives.

Description: In the initial part of the VII antarctic expedition, between Guayaquil-Valparaíso, on board vessel B/I Orion of ecuadorian navy in december 1998, zooplankton samples were collected through horizontal and oblique drags using nets bongo 500µm. The purpose of the later analysis was to determine the ichthyoplankton population in the South Eastern Pacific. No stations were done in peruvian water.Total amount of 6380 eggs (10m²)-1 and 2173 larvas (10m²)-1 were estimated from the analysis. The fish eggs belonging to 8 orders, 13 families and 1 genera, while 7 orders, 14 families and 20 genera of fish larvae were registered. The highest concentration of fish eggs was registered in tropical superficial waters masses (ATS), suntropical superficial (ASS) and coastal peruvian waters (ACP). The fish larvae were more abundant in chileans coastal waters, where equatorial subsuperficial water masses (AESS), subtropical subsuperficial (ASS), subantarctic (ASA) and peruvian coastal (ACP) waters found Sardinops sagax y Thunnus sp., larvae were recorded in the south west of Gulf of Guayaquil. There were also identification of two species related with tropical waters, de Benthosema panamense y Myctophum sp. The most representative families in the study ares were Bathylagidae, Gonostomatidae, Scombridae y Myctophidae with the genera Diogenichthys sp., Gonichthys laternatun, Gonichthys sp, Lampanycthus sp., related with tropical species from the west. The presence, migration and distribution of the ichthyoplankton suggest a direct relationship with the temperature of the study area. The temperature and salinity have directly influenced the showing up and distribution of the ichthyoplankton, showed a migration to the North of Chile that coincided with the temperature decreasing.

Description: Changes on some oceanographic conditions as well surface planktonic community structure were studied during 33 months (December 1999- August 2002) at a fixed station in the Gulf of Guayaquil. Copepods, ostacods and decapod larvae were the most abundant zooplankton (300 µ mesh size) taxa, followed by fish larvae, chaetognaths, medusae, and mysidaceans. The lower abundance taxa were fish eggs, polychaeths, amphipods, pteropods, lamellibranch, cirriped larvae, and gasteropods. Phytoplankton was dominated by diatoms. The effect of the oceanographic variability on the zooplanktonic distribution, abundance, and population dynamics is unknown due to lack of appropriate continuity on sampling and analyses. The two most abundant copepod species were identified. Acartia danae dominated on the dry season, and Labidocera lubbocckii on the rainy season. Although, in general, copepod abundance was high, this diminished during the rainy seasons of 2000 (138-199 org/m3) and 2002 (175-327 org./m3), with relation to 2001 (1235-2238 org/m3). In march and april it was (6785 y 19887 org./m3). Ostracods, mainly Conchoecia sp., were relatively abundant (compared to copepods) and they were sometimes present in higher numbers. Decapods larvae were more abundand during the rainy season, specially in 2002. High abundance of copepods was find to be associated to lower water temperature, and decapod larvae, to higher temperatures. Diatoms were the main components of the phytoplankton community, with dominance of Skeletonema costatum, Coscinodiscus excentricus y Thalassiotrix frauenfeldii.

Description: The present work includes/understands the study of the qualitative and quantitative temporary variability of the phytoplankton, zooplankton and ichthyoplankton in the shores of the Santay Island, of the Province of the Guayas. For the effect 16 samples, obtained during november of the 2000 and january of the 2002 were analyzed. 38 species of phytoplankton in water samples and 51 species in network samples were identified (50u). The diatoms were dominant and in smaller concentration the dinoflagellates ones, cianobacterys, silicoflagellates, and tintinides. The cellular biomass was represented mainly by Skeletonema costatum, Paralia sulcata and Coscinodiscus excentricus, species that were abundant in the study area. In network samples species were observed estuarys and benthicas: Actinoptychus senarius, Coscinodiscus excentricus, C. concinnus, Polymixus coronalis, Cyclotella menenghiniana, characteristic of a high fertility. During year 2000 a smaller zooplanctónica biomass with a variability in the abundance of the main groups of zooplancton appeared, standing out the dominant group the Larvae of Fish and represented by the sort Anchovy sp. and its temporary abundance is influenced mainly by the seasonal time, physical factors and states of tides. Wheres during year 2002 a greater zooplanctónica biomass was observed and greater diversity of species, this biomass was represented mainly by microcrustaceans such as Nauplios of cirripedios, Copépodos, Zoeas of brachiuras, Copépodos, Larvae of fish and Larvae of poliquetos, in comparison with year 2000. The abundance of a fraction of some groups of zooplankton pertaining to meroplancton is an index that mainly characterizes productive areas by the presence of larval estadíos of crustaceans and fish.

Description: This paper is about eggs and larval stages of Cetengraulis mysticetus (chuhueco), Engraulis, Anchoa sp., Anchovia sp. (anchovies) and Opisthonema sp., (pinchagua) research, and their relation with the micro zooplankton distribution collected in 22 stations located in the inner channels and coastal waters of Ecological Reserve Cayapas-Mataje (REMACAM) - Province of Esmeraldas, from april 2000 to december 2001. These fish larvae characterized the coastal and estuarine waters of Santa Rosa, Limones (C. mysticetus and Anchovia sp.) and Olmedo (Anchoa sp.) especially from august to december. Opisthonema sp. fish larvae characterized the northern zone of the REMACAM, in front of Campana town in the Mataje River on june 2001 and also in the central zone towards on a side of the Bolivar Channel, San Lorenzo and Isla de los Pájaros in Tambillo River on august and december 2001. The spawn of chuhueco fish and anchovies found on august and november 2001 increased in the inner channel of the north and central zone, from the mouth of the Mataje River, Canal de la Caida to San Lorenzo. Associated coastal processes to own oceanic conditions of "La Niña" event, during year 2000 and the tendency to a normalization of the marine ecosystem at the end of the 2001, they would be related to a greater micro zooplankton production (chaetognatha, copepoda, veliger larvae of mollusks, zoea of brachyuran) observed in the year 2000 and to reductions in the density of zooplankters and greater spawn of engraulis in the year 2001. The amount of phosphates nitrates and chlorophyll correlated positively with rises in the density of clupeiformes eggs and fish larvae.

Description: The present study is based on the plankton samples collected in the cruise carried out by the Oceanographic Institute of the Equatorian Navy during september 2001. For this study 10 zooplankton samples was analyzed and corresponding to five coastal stations, located approximately in a transect between 81 W and from 1° N to 3°S. 8,208 organisms belonging to 23 families, 43 genus and 97 copepods species were identified. For each station was obtained the percentages of males and females, and the total average for the five stations too. Of the total of identified species 72.51% corresponded to females specimens and 27.49% to males specimens. The distribution of the copépodos species was associated to the conditions oceanographic that were presented during september of 2001. The copepods species of the south of the coast of the Ecuador, they were conformed mainly by species of cold waters, associated to a strong influence of the Humboldt Current that would have contributed to the displacement of characteristic species of cold waters, from the costs of Chile and Perú toward the costs of Ecuador. While in waters of intermediate temperatures, they were species conformed mainly by a transition fauna between cold waters of the south and the warm of the north. On relationship to the station more to the north, the copepods were conformed mainly by species of warm waters. This way, new expectations about the study of biological indicators in the oceanography one could wait, with the analysis and study of the climatic variability and their effect in the populations of the plankton in the ocean.

Description: The present work comprehends the study of the qualitative and quantitative distribution of the phytoplankton, zooplankton and ichthyoplankton at San Lorenzo in Esmeraldas Province. For the effect 12 stations were established located at the Estero Chimbusal, Estero Nadadero, Canal de San Lorenzo. The sample was taken in the phases flow and refflux the days ist and 2nd of september 2001. There were identified 63 species in water samples and 77 species in samples with net of 50u in the community of the phytoplankton. The diatoms prevailed dominant and in smaller concentration the dinoflagellates, tintinnoids, cianobacters and flagellates. The cell biomass was represented by Messodinium rubrum and Chaetoceros compressus, they were the most abundant species in all the area. In net samples of 50u the dominant species were: Biddulphia sinensis, B.mobiliensis, Chaetoceros compressus, Pleurosigma angulatum and Skeletonema costatum, tytical of a high fertility in the area. The regimen refflux registered 17 taxas of zooplankton an the dominants were Copepods (35%), Chaetognaths (34%) and the Crustacean Larvae such as Zoeas of Brachyuran (11%).
Description: The objective of the present study was to carry out a assess of plankton productivity nearest of the Puntilla Santa Elena, for the projection of future Artificial Reefs, carried out by the Oceanographic Institute of the Ecuadorian Navy, during august 2002. The investigated area presented high concentrations of primary and secondary productivity in the column of water (0-10m), with certain daily fluctuation characteristic of the trphic coastal systems that shows the circulation of the coastal currents and submarine topography. The main alimentary complements were the centric diatoms with high chlorophyll (Phytoplankton); the copepods and cladocera were the representative in the second level trophic (Zooplankton). It was a high diversity of fish eggs and larvae, information that would confirm that this sector is an spawn area for this month. The high diversity of crustaceans larvae, makes show off that the substrates of artificial reefs will be an attraction for crabs, shrimp and other crustaceans. Although the stadiums of sessile benthic organisms presented low density of briozoos larvae, cirrepedios, shells (bivalve mollusks and gastropods), they would be those that would populate the superficial layer of the new artificial structures. These marine organisms of the food chain constitute an excellent natural resource for fish and invertebrate organisms, consequently the artificial reefs would be favorable for the reception of the sessile organisms (as macroalgae and corals) and refuge area to alimentary support for other organisms like the fish.

Description: The present research corresponds to the cruise carried out by the Oceanographic Institute of the Ecuadorian Navy in september 2001, between 89°W - 81°1W and 1°N - 3°3S. The distribution of plankton populations associated with upwelling areas of the coastal brunch of the Humboldt Current in the Gulf of Guayaquil, and toward the Galápagos, upwelling of the Cromwell Current, forming patches in the central region and toward the Gulf of Guayaquil, is decribed. Increased phytoplankton (diatoms) production was found south of the equatorial region, coincident with the presence of dinoflagellates species of warm-oceanic waters allowing slight mixed areas. The higher abundance of zooplankton (copepods) were found to the east of the Galápagos Islands, decreasing toward the continent. These bio-geographic conditions point to higher productivity areas to the south and lower productivity areas to the north of the studied area, characterized by the position of the equatorial front. A. patch the high biological productivity was also evidenced in the oceanic region, atypical condition associated to the global cooling of the La Niña event, and/ or advances of upwelling waters toward the continent, processes of great importance for the pelagic resources of Ecuador.

Description: The oceanographic Institute of the Ecuadorian Navy carried out a coastal cruise around La Plata Island in August 2001 onboard the R/V RIGEL. The main objective was to study the distribution and interaction of ecological variables affecting phyto-zooplankton and ichthyoplankton, as a tool for the evaluation of coastal marine resources. An important aspect is the bathymetry of the area influencing the biological component. Shallower waters are found southwards allowing the occurrence of upwelling and advection processes that bring nutrient rich waters to the surface. This is shown by the high chlorophyll "a" content found in the south, favorable for phyto- and zooplankton production, also abundant in that region. The cellular biomass was composed by species that are indicative of mixed waters, warm-oceanic and upwelling waters with increased abundance towards the south. The tendency of increased biological productivity in the southern margin of La Plata Island is coincident with other ecosystems such as the Galápagos Islands and Santa Clara Island. These southern areas area important ecological niches, i.e. birds and marine mammals, decisive for coastal marine resources support. It is of extreme importance to continue the vigilance and control of these areas, specially due to the negative effects that the proximity of commercial marine traffic may produce.

Description: The present paper is the result of the analysis of ichthyoplankton samples colected ten miles off shore from Salinas - Península Santa Elena, since november 1999 until july 2000. During this period it has been found two points of high secondary productivity: in subsurface waters ( 0-50 m depth) during may, and in surface waters during march. The biomass of microzooplankton, eggs and fish larvae Engraulidae and Clupeidae were found in high quantity in these months mainly between the 0-50 m depth. The interrelation among planktonic foraminifers species: Globigerina bulloides, Globigerinoides ruber, Globigerinella aequilateralis, G. menardii, G. dutertrei and G. sacculifer, characterized the surface equatorial waters with the influence of cold waters of the Humboldt Current during this study, specially in march. Fish larvae like Anchoa sp., Anchovia (anchoa), Engraulis ringens (anchoveta) y Cetengraulis mysticetus (chuhueco), were identify since march to july. C. mysticetus was the most abundant specie. High diversity of zooplankton and fish larvae E. ringens and Opisthonema sp. (pinchagua) ocurred in may of 2000 also.

Description: During the present study carried out around the Galápagos Islands a total of ten species were registered including 3 genus: Sagitta, krohnitta and Pterosagitta. The genus Sagitta represented the biggest number of species S. enflata and S. pacifica were very abundant with the 35% and 26% respectively, the same ones that were in all the stations and represented a distribution relatively homogeneus in the area of study. Another species of genus Sagitta registered a common and relative abundance among them a S. hexaptera with a 5% after that S. bierii, S. bedoti with 2% each one and the species S. reguíaris and S. pulchra with a low 1%. Some specimenes don't contribute a clear identification because they registered a juvenil characteristic that corresponds to 24% a sagitta sp. Besides the genus Krhonitta and Pterosagitta were found, these represented two and one species respectively, species that represent a rare relative presence K. subtilis showed 3% while K. pacifica and P. draco together with one percent. Finally there are confirmed the existence of upwellings areas located in the south of Isabel Island, because of presence of S. hexapter and K. Subtilis whose habitat are intermediate and deep water and can be considered a indicator of upwellings.

Description: The present study was carried out during the wet and dry seasons in the rivers Teaone, Esmeraldas, Petrolero Terminal and Palmas, for which stablished that a variability exists temporary space as for the abundance and composition of the communities zooplankton, especially the species of the taxa Chaetognatha, Cladocera, Caridea. The area of major productivity zooplanctónica associated with a high diversity was in the zone of Petrolero Terminal of Esmeraldas during the wet season. In the area Petrolero Terminal there was high abundance of Quetognatos's species represented by the dominancia of S. bedoti and S. neglecta in the wet season and during the dry season the dominancia was od S. enflata and S. minim which con be related principally by the seasonal variation of the parameter salinity, whereas the temperature was kept in a range of 25.9° to 28.4 °C during 2 season in study. The low zooplankton abundance and diversity registered in the river Teaone, there being registered the presence of scanty specimens of Macrobranchium rathbunae in the wet season. In the river Teaone were observed high values of potential of hydrogen in comparison with other areas in study, for what, it might catalogue that this area is in conditions of a deterioration of the quality of the waters, by light indications towards a pollution product of the antropogénica activities.

Description: This research is part of an environmental monitoring of plankton and its physical and chemical response around the platform located offshore Campo Amistad, near Santa Clara Island, southeast of the Gulf in external Guayaquil. The study was carried out between july 30 and august 31-2001, onboard the R/V Orión of te Oceanographic Institute of the Ecuadorian Navy. The chlorophyll "a" biomass presented values between 0.6 and 1.52 mg/m³ in surface waters, with averages of 1.07 to 0.99 mg/m³ (10 m), 0.79 (20 m) and 0.58 (30 m) mg/m³. The larger amounts of biomass and daily variability were found in the northern part of the platform, while the opposite trend was observed in its western area. One hundred and three phytoplankton species were identified, with dominance of centric diatoms of mainly Skeletonema costatum and Chaetoceros curvisetus. Dinoflagellates presented high diversity and low biomass; Ceratium dens was the dominant species, characterizing influences of external water masses in the estuary. The zooplankton fauna was represented by 28 groups, with dominance of cladocera and copepods; the highest density of organisms was found the 17h00 hours. High density of cladocera presented a strong positive relationship to phytoplankton abundance, and a negative correlation to copepod abundance. The environmental conditions in the surface thermal structure were almost stable, with an average of 22.5°C. The lowest temperatures were found southwest of the platform (subsurface), coincident with a slight increase in nutrients (nitrate and silicate). The marine biota associated with these environmental conditions presented high diversity, implying the absence of eutrophication incidence in the estuary area of the platform.
