    Beschreibung: In this dataset, we analyzed daytime casts (09:00-16:00) of both discrete bottle data and continuous CTD casts from CalCOFI stations restricted to an area from La Jolla, California to Point Conception and 215 km maximum offshore. This dataset has combined bottle and CTD casts to represent the date range 1984-2019. We used the oxygen and irradiance measurements to determine the visual luminoxyscape for each of the larval species. This range was bounded by the oxygen (partial pressure) where the pO2 would permit 50% minimum retinal function (V50; 13, 7.2, 10.2, and 6.8 kPa for larvae of 'Doryteuthis opalescens', 'Octopus bimaculatus', 'Metacarcinus gracilis', and 'Pleuroncodes planipes', respectively), and where there is sufficient irradiance for a visual response (0.0311 µmol photons m-2 s-1) for each species. Additionally, oxygen limits for metabolism were used to determine the depth of occurrence of the Pcrit (the oxygen below which the animal cannot maintain a constant metabolic rate). The depths of occurrence for metabolic limits were determined for larvae of 'D. opalescens' and 'O. bimaculatus'.     Beschreibung: This note describes improvements of UV oxidation method that is used to measure carbon isotopes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) at the National Ocean Sciences Accelerator Mass Spectrometry Facility (NOSAMS). The procedural blank is reduced to 2.6 ± 0.6 μg C, with Fm of 0.42 ± 0.10 and δ13C of –28.43 ± 1.19‰. The throughput is improved from one sample per day to two samples per day.

    Beschreibung: Dataset: Kelp responses to temperature
    Beschreibung: Giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) is a globally distributed foundation species with seasonal fluctuations in abundance in response to local nutrient levels, storm intensity, and ocean temperatures. In this study, we examined individual and population level responses of early life history stages (zoospore settlement, survival, and gametogenesis) to increased temperatures to determine the capacity for temperature-tolerant individuals to allow adaptation in a changing climate. We collected fertile M. pyrifera sporophyll blades from three sites along the California coast (Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Monterey Bay) and induced zoospore release in the lab. Spores settled on microscope slides at three treatment temperatures (16º, 20º, 22º C), matured for 21 days, and were imaged weekly to determine settlement, survival, and maturation success. On average, individuals from all sites showed lower rates of settlement and maturation in response to increasing temperature.     Beschreibung: These data include measurements of juvenile oyster shell strength from predator cue bioassay experiments conducted at Dauphin Island Sea Lab, Dauphin Island, AL between June and August of 2020. Study description: Homarine and trigonelline are two blue crab urine metabolites that cause mud crabs to seek refuge, but it is unknown whether these molecules influence other species. In the current study, homarine, trigonelline, and blue crab urine of animals fed conspecific and heterospecific diets were tested on juvenile oysters to ascertain if the same molecules known to alter mud crab behavior also affect oyster morphology. Juvenile oysters were exposed to chemicals for roughly 6 weeks and their shell strength (N) was measured and standardized to the size of the animals (mm) as a proxy for understanding this defense.     Beschreibung: To explore mechanisms of freshwater adaptation and distinguish between adaptive (evolutionary) and acclimatory (plastic) responses to salinity change, we examined genome‐wide patterns of gene expression between ancestral saline and derived freshwater populations of the Eurytemora affinis species complex, reared under two different common‐garden conditions (0 vs. 15 PSU). These data include the RNA-seq Illumina short paired end reads (101 base pairs) of 10 freshwater and 12 saline copepods Eurytemora affinis samples. The freshwater copepod samples were collected in Lake Michigan (Racine Harbor), while the saline copepods were collected in Baie de L'Isle Verte, St. Lawrence marsh, Quebec, Canada. These data have important implications for our understanding of the evolutionary and physiological mechanisms of range expansions by some of the most widespread invaders in aquatic habitats.     Beschreibung: Dataset: Microsensor Profiling O2
    Beschreibung: These data were collected as part of a sediment incubation experiment, to investigate potential interactions between estuarine cable bacteria and their associated microbial community. Sediments were collected from the main channel of Chesapeake Bay at a mesohaline station that experiences seasonal oxygen depletion. The upper 10 centimeters (cm) of sediment was homogenized under anaerobic conditions, packed into polycarbonate core liners, and incubated in a dark climate-controlled room in aerated aquaria with artificial seawater (S=15.5; T=16 degrees Celsius). In a sub-set of core tubes, a 0.2 micron polycarbonate filter was held embedded at 0.5 cm depth, to block the downward growth of cable bacteria while allowing for porewater diffusion. The sediments (with and without embedded filters) were destructively sampled on 6 dates over 46 days, at which time nucleic acids, samples for microscopy, and samples for porewater geochemistry were collected. Microsensor profiling (oxygen (O2), pH, hydrogen sulfide (H2S)) was conducted alongside the destructive sampling. Associated nucleic acid data are available through NCBI Sequence Read Archive, under Bioproject PRJNA833464. Sediment porewaters were handled anaerobically, and were extracted by centrifugation followed by filtration (0.2 micron in-line filters). Geochemical data include porewater anions (sulfate and chloride) measured by ion chromatography, and ammonium and ferrous iron concentrations measured by standard colorimetric methods. Microscopy data include both counts of cable bacteria measured with FISH oligoprobe DSB706, and total single cell bacteria. The dataset was generated by Pinky Liau under the supervision of Dr. Sairah Malkin, Horn Point Laboratory, U. Maryland Center for Environmental Sciences.     Beschreibung: This dataset consists of pooled whole-genome sequencing data (Pool-seq) of Eurytemora affinis complex copepods collected from nine locations across North America. Each sample consists of 100 pooled individuals with an approximate 1:1 sex ratio, sequenced using the Nextera DNA library preparation kit and Illumina HiSeq platform. Population sampling targeted nine wild populations of the E. affinis complex from two genetically distinct lineages (the Gulf and Atlantic clades) including both native saline and invaded freshwater locations. The data were generated to investigate evolutionary genomic factors underlying successful invasion of freshwater habitats and were collected by Drs. Martin Bontrager, David B. Stern, and Carol E.     Beschreibung: Seawater samples and environmental measurements were collected across the Heron Island coral reef during three reef-scale surveys in the morning and evening in October of 2015. Seawater samples were analyzed for dissolved inorganic carbon chemistry parameters. The study was designed to characterize the natural spatio-temporal variability of carbonate chemistry and environmental parameters across the entire coral reef system.     Beschreibung: Dataset: Oyster genetic identity and parasite community structure
    Beschreibung: Intraspecific variation in host susceptibility to individual parasite species is common, yet how these effects scale to mediate the structure of diverse parasite communities in nature is not as well understood. To address this knowledge gap, we tested how host genetic identity affects parasite communities on restored reefs seeded with juvenile oysters from different sources – a regional commercial hatchery or one of two wild progenitor lines. We assessed the prevalence and intensity of three micro- and two macro-parasite species for four years following restoration. Despite the spatial proximity of restored reefs, oyster source identity strongly predicted parasite community prevalence across all years, with sources varying in their relative susceptibility to different parasites. Oyster seed source also predicted reef-level parasite intensities across space and through time. Our results highlight that host intraspecific variation can shape parasite community structure in natural systems, and reinforce the importance of considering source identity and diversity in restoration design.     Beschreibung: In late May 2021, the M/V X-Press Pearl container ship caught fire while anchored 18 km off the coast of Colombo, Sri Lanka and spilled upward of 70 billion pieces of plastic or “nurdles” (∼1680 tons), littering the country’s coastline. Exposure to combustion, heat, chemicals, and petroleum products led to an apparent continuum of changes from no obvious effects to pieces consistent with previous reports of melted and burned plastic (pyroplastic) found on beaches. At the middle of this continuum, nurdles were discolored but appeared to retain their prefire morphology, resembling nurdles that had been weathered in the environment. We performed a detailed investigation of the physical and surface properties of discolored nurdles collected on a beach 5 days after the ship caught fire and within 24 h of their arrival onshore. The color was the most striking trait of the plastic: white for nurdles with minimal alteration from the accident, orange for nurdles containing antioxidant degradation products formed by exposure to heat, and gray for partially combusted nurdles. Our color analyses indicate that this fraction of the plastic released from the ship was not a continuum but instead diverged into distinct groups. Fire left the gray nurdles scorched, with entrained particles and pools of melted plastic, and covered in soot, representing partial pyroplastics, a new subtype of pyroplastic. Cross sections showed that the heat- and fire-induced changes were superficial, leaving the surfaces more hydrophilic but the interior relatively untouched. These results provide timely and actionable information to responders to reevaluate cleanup end points, monitor the recurrence of these spilled nurdles, gauge short- and long-term effects of the spilled nurdles to the local ecosystem, and manage the recovery of the spill. These findings underscore partially combusted plastic (pyroplastic) as a type of plastic pollution that has yet to be fully explored despite the frequency at which plastic is burned globally.

    Beschreibung: These data include Nitrogen Isotope Ratios (δ15N) in amino acid standards and in four field-collected samples. Certified δ15N values are either EA-IRMS values (Glutamic acid [Glu], USGS) or produced by the persulfate oxidization method (Phenylalanine [Phe], Knapp et al., 2005) or provided by McCarthy Lab (M-std and Cyano). Mixtures of 16 amino acids were also evaluated. The newly-developed method used here will help promote the use of δ15N-AA in important studies of nitrogen cycling and trophic ecology in a wide range of research areas. The Phe isotopic standards are available to the community for inter-lab method comparisons. These data were collected by PhD student Wingman (Charlotte) Lee and Dr. Lin Zhang (PI ) at the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.     Beschreibung: Pliocene–Quaternary faults are relevant structures with which to constrain the seismotectonic context and contribute to the evaluation of the seismic hazard of a region. Many of these faults, however, do not show clear surface evidence even when releasing earthquakes. For these reasons they can be extremely dangerous as they receive relatively little attention and can be difficult to identify. From among the various surface geology studies and/or palaeoseismological investigations, we focus our attention on the integration of different datasets such as seismic reflection profiles, surface kinematic data and the relocation of seismological data, which make it possible to identify and characterize active faults whose dimension and earthquake potential would otherwise not be large enough to make them identifiable. We take as an example the Montespertoli NE-trending fault in southern Tuscany (central Italy) with which we associate the 2016 M=3.9 Castelfiorentino earthquake. This structure is part of a wider (in the order of 15–20 km) crustal-scale shear zone, which may be responsible for strong historical earthquakes in the area.

    Beschreibung: Inert gases dissolved in the ocean are powerful tracers of the impact of physical processes on gases, particularly air-sea gas exchange (by both diffusive and bubble-meditated processes), temperature change, atmospheric pressure variation, mixing between different water masses, and ice processes. We have compiled a global ocean database of dissolved neon, argon, and krypton measurements, supplemented by helium, xenon, and nitrogen/argon (N2/Ar) ratios in some locations. Samples were collected on board multiple research cruises spanning the period 1999 through 2016 and analyzed by mass spectrometry at four different shore-based laboratories (University of Victoria, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, University of Washington, and Scripps Institution of Oceanography). Version 2.0 corrects an incorrect sign in the longitude for cruise 33KI20040814:HOT162 in version 1.0. The error in the database does not affect any figures in the publication (doi: 10.1146/annurev-marine-121916-063604).     Beschreibung: To investigate anti-predatory and foraging behaviors of whelks, we conducted laboratory experiments at Bodega Marine Laboratory in 2017 to test whether previous predator exposure had a sustained effect on prey foraging and in turn on a basal resource, even after the predator was removed. We tested for both behavioral and morphological legacies of prior predation. The study system consisted of a tri-trophic food chain, using the red rock crab, Cancer productus, as the predator, the carnivorous whelk, Nucella ostrina, as the prey species, and the California mussel, Mytilus californianus, as the basal resource.     Beschreibung: Dataset: Predation intensity on marine invertebrate communities across latitude observed using underwater video
    Beschreibung: Predation intensity recorded from exposed prey communities at coastal sites across a latitudinal gradient spanning the subarctic to the tropics. Invertebrate communities developed under low predation for three or 12 months within cages. Mature prey communities were then exposed to ambient predation, with a high definition camera recording all predation events during the diurnal period over three days of exposure. This experiment provided an assessment of predation intensity (and predator identity) to complement predator exclusion experiments that measured impact of predators on prey community assembly. This dataset is an initial examination of the proteome allocation of this heterotrophic bacteria and will contribute to C-CoMP's efforts that are focused on understanding the physiology of model marine bacteria. A total of 2341 proteins were identified in DSS-3. The Moran laboratory at University of Georgia grew and prepared the cultures and the Saito laboratory at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution conducted the proteomics analyses.     Beschreibung: This dataset provides seawater macronutrient concentrations from the Amundsen and Ross Seas, including from Terra Nova Bay, collected onboard the R/V Nathaniel B. Palmer as part of the Cobalamin and Iron Co-Limitation of Phytoplankton Species (CICLOPS) expedition from December 11, 2017 to March 3, 2018. Samples analyzed for phosphate, nitrite, nitrate + nitrite, silicate and ammonia were collected from full depth profiles via a trace-metal-clean rosette (TMR), filtered with a 0.2 um filter, and stored frozen until analysis via a nutrient autoanalyzer. Sensor hydrography data from each sample depth is also provided. For a complete list of measurements, refer to the full dataset description in the supplemental file 'Dataset_description.pdf'.     Beschreibung: Dataset: Acropora hyacinthus energetics and reproduction
    Beschreibung: The French Polynesian island of Mo’orea experienced a severe mass bleaching event in 2019 accompanied by widespread coral mortality. At the most heavily impacted sites, Acropora hyacinthus individuals that were resistant to bleaching were observed alongside colonies that bleached but showed signs of symbiont recovery shortly after the bleaching event. Fragments of healthy A. hyacinthus colonies five months post-bleaching were sampled for energetic assays and histological measurements. Despite healthy appearances in both resistant and recovered corals, recovered colonies had significantly reduced energy reserves compared to resistant colonies. In addition, compound effects of stress on reproduction were observed: recovered colonies displayed both a lower probability of containing gametes and lower fecundity per polyp.
