    Description: In recent years there has been a huge amount of both popular and academic interest in storytelling as something that is an essential part of not only literature and art but also our everyday lives as well as our dreams, fantasies, aspirations, historical self-understanding, and political actions. The question of the ethics of storytelling always, inevitably, lurks behind these discussions, though most frequently it remains implicit rather than explicit. This volume explores the ethical potential and risks of storytelling from an interdisciplinary perspective. It stages a dialogue between contemporary literature and visual arts across media (film, photography, performative arts), interdisciplinary theoretical perspectives (debates in narrative studies, trauma studies, cultural memory studies, ethical criticism), and history (traumatic histories of violence, cultural history). The collection analyses ethical issues involved in different strategies employed in literature and art to narrate experiences that resist telling and imagining, such as traumatic historical events, including war and political conflicts. The chapters explore the multiple ways in which the ethics of storytelling relates to the contemporary arts as they work with, draw on, and contribute to historical imagination. The book foregrounds the connection between remembering and imagining and explores the ambiguous role of narrative in the configuration of selves, communities, and the relation to the non-human. While discussing the ethical aspects of storytelling, it also reflects on the relevance of artistic storytelling practices for our understanding of ethics. Making an original contribution to interdisciplinary narrative studies and narrative ethics, this book both articulates a complex understanding of how artistic storytelling practices enable critical distance from culturally dominant narrative practices, and analyzes the limitations and potential pitfalls of storytelling.

    Description: Baroque Lorca: An Arcaist Playwright for the New Stage defines Federico García Lorca’s trajectory in the theater as a lifelong search for an audience. It studies a wide range of dramatic writings that Lorca created for the theater, in direct response to the conditions of his contemporary industry, and situates the theory and praxis of his theatrical reform in dialogue with other modernist renovators of the stage.     Description: Diese literaturgeschichtliche Arbeit führt erstmals auf breiter Quellenbasis den empirischen Nachweis, dass Leser/-innen beim außerwissenschaftlichen Umgang mit Literatur in Geschichte und Gegenwart Applikationen vornehmen. Es wird gezeigt, welche Formen eine solche Applikation annehmen kann, und dass es sich um eine relevante Praktik handelt. Unter ‚Applikation‘ ist eine Tätigkeit im Rahmen des Rezeptionsprozesses zu verstehen, bei welcher Leser/-innen das Gelesene auf ihre persönlichen oder lebensweltlichen Erfahrungen, Überzeugungen und Einstellungen beziehen. Das Ergebnis dieser Bezugnahme, welches ebenfalls ‚Applikation‘ heißt, kann sein, dass sie neue Überzeugungen und Einstellungen bilden, bestehende verändern oder verwerfen. Um Existenz, Beschaffenheit und Relevanz des Phänomens zu belegen, wurde eine Fülle an Rezeptionsdokumenten ausgewertet. Sie geben Auskunft über die Erstrezeption von neun Romanen aus vier Jahrhunderten, die das literarische Korpus der Arbeit bilden, darunter Goethes Werther, Manns Buddenbrooks und Schlinks Der Vorleser. Die Arbeit beleuchtet eine wichtige, in der bisherigen rezeptionsgeschichtlichen Forschung nicht hinreichend beachtete Praktik des außerwissenschaftlichen Umgangs mit Literatur.

Through in-depth case studies and historical contextualisation, this book showcases how the "woes that no words can sound" of Shakespeare’s iconic lovers nevertheless have found expression not only in his verbal poetry, but also in non-verbal adaptations of the play in 19th-century symphonic music and 20th- and 21st-century theatre dance. Combining methodological approaches from diverse disciplines, including affect theory, musicology, and dance studies, this study opens up a new perspective onto the artistic representation of love, defining amorous emotion as a generically transformative constellation of dialogic performativity. To explore how this constellation has become manifest across the arts, this book analyses and compares dramatic, musical, and choreographic dramatisations of love in William Shakespeare’s early modern tragedy, French composer Hector Berlioz’s dramatic symphony Roméo et Juliette (1839), and the staging of Berlioz’s symphony by German contemporary choreographer Sasha Waltz for the Paris Opera Ballet (2007).

    Description: Dieser im Open Access erscheinende Band nimmt eine bislang kaum beachtete Tendenz der Nachkriegsepik in den Blick:„Ich bin nicht Stiller!“ heißt es in Max Frischs Roman gleich zu Beginn des ersten Teils, der den Titel „Stillers Aufzeichnungen im Gefängnis“ trägt. Der das sagt, nennt sich White, wird aber von seiner Umgebung für Stiller gehalten. Stiller ist mit seinem provokanten Beginn vielleicht der markanteste unter den unzuverlässig erzählten Romanen der deutschsprachigen Nachkriegsliteratur, von denen im Band einige zwischen 1945 und den 1970er Jahren veröffentlichte vorgestellt und analysiert werden, darunter Texte von Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Hugo Loetscher, Peter Weiss, Alfred Andersch, Arno Schmidt, Uwe Johnson, Günter de Bruyn und Fred Wander; aber auch von älteren Autoren, die noch nach dem Krieg publiziert haben, wie Leo Perutz und Thomas Mann. Ein Schwerpunkt der Auswahl liegt darin, die Variabilität des Verfahrens zu zeigen und den theoretischen Randbereich des Begriffs ‚narrative Unzuverlässigkeit‘ auszuleuchten. Er erweist sich als heuristisch fruchtbares Analysetool, mit dem auch Texte gewinnbringend untersucht werden können, die nicht im strengen Sinne unzuverlässig erzählt sind.

    Description: This open access book explores commentaries on an influential text of pre-Copernican astronomy in Europe. It features essays that take a close look at key intellectuals and how they engaged with the main ideas of this qualitative introduction to geocentric cosmology. Johannes de Sacrobosco compiled his Tractatus de sphaera during the thirteenth century in the frame of his teaching activities at the then recently founded University of Paris. It soon became a mandatory text all over Europe. As a result, a tradition of commentaries to the text was soon established and flourished until the second half of the 17th century. Here, readers will find an informative overview of these commentaries complete with a rich context. The essays explore the educational and social backgrounds of the writers. They also detail how their careers developed after the publication of their commentaries, the institutions and patrons they were affiliated with, what their agenda was, and whether and how they actually accomplished it. The editor of this collection considers these scientific commentaries as genuine scientific works. The contributors investigate them here not only in reference to the work on which it comments but also, and especially, as independent scientific contributions that are socially, institutionally, and intellectually contextualized around their authors.

    Description: This chapter examines Sasha Waltz’s choreographic staging of Berlioz’s Roméo et Juliette for the Paris Opera Ballet from 2007. Waltz’s production reimagines one of the most canonical stories in the classical ballet repertoire through the abstract and fragmentary lens of contemporary dance. I trace how Waltz appropriates the post-modern principles of Contact Improvisation for purposes of balletic storytelling. Drawing from recent affect-focussed criticism in dance studies, I explore how Waltz uses the non-narrative relationality of Contact Improvisation to transform Shakespeare’s poetic constellations of affect into abstract, yet dramatically expressive choreographic embodiments of affect, especially in the Pas de deux during the “Scène d’amour”.

    Description: Since the beginning of the 19th century, quantitative techniques have been used in literary and human sciences to describe, analyze and interpret texts. Such approaches were underrepresented until the end of the 20th century, but are becoming increasingly important in the digital humanities. The aim of the volume is to contextualize theories of theory, methodology and subject history on the one hand, and on the other hand to examine the significance of their results with a view to the digital present. In view of the innovative verve of digital humanities, it should not be forgotten that the idea of ​​juxtaposing interpretive close reading with descriptive-analytical, remote reading is not much younger than the idea of ​​close reading itself. Counting is by no means the first through the 'digital revolution' of the humanities. Rather, what has been determined by late Dilthey as the subject of the understanding and qualitatively oriented humanities has been declared 'measurable' for some 200 years.
    Description: Seit Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts werden in den Literatur- und Geisteswissenschaften quantitative Verfahren angewandt, um Texte zu beschreiben, zu analysieren und zu interpretieren. Bis zum Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts waren solche Ansätze unterrepräsentiert, gewinnen im Zuge der Digital Humanities jedoch sehr stark an Bedeutung. Ziel des Bandes ist es, quantifizierende Verfahren einerseits theorie-, methoden- und fachgeschichtlich zu kontextualisieren, andererseits aber auch mit Blick auf die digitale Gegenwart zu prüfen, welchen Stellenwert ihre Ergebnisse haben. Angesichts der innovativen Verve der Digital Humanities darf nicht vergessen werden, dass die Idee, einem interpretativen close reading ein (vermeintlich?) deskriptiv-analytisches distant reading gegenüberzustellen, nicht sehr viel jünger ist als die Idee des close reading selbst. Denn Zählen ist keinesfalls erst durch die 'digitale Revolution' der Geisteswissenschaften denkbar geworden. Vielmehr wird schon seit ungefähr 200 Jahren das, was vom späten Dilthey als Gegenstand der verstehenden und qualitativ orientierten Geisteswissenschaften bestimmt wurde, auch zum 'messbaren' Objekt erklärt.

    Description: Recently, literary critics and some historians have argued that to use the language of separate spheres is to "mistake fiction for reality." However, the tendency in this criticism is to ignore the work of feminist political theorists who argue that a range of ideologies of the public and private consistently work to mask gender inequalities. In Keeping Up Her Geography, Tanya Ann Kenedy argues that these inequalities are shaped by multiple, but interconnected, spatial constructions of the public and private in US culture. Moreover, the early twentieth century when key spatial concepts – the nation, the urban, the regional, and the domestic – were being redefined is a pivotal era for understanding how the public-private binary remains tenaciously central to the defining of gender. Keeping Up Her Geography shows that this is the case in a range of literary and cultural contexts: in feminist speeches at the World’s Columbian Exposition, in middle-class women’s urban reform texts, in southern writer Ellen Glasgow’s novels, and in the autobiographical narratives of Zora Neale Hurston and Agnes Smedley.

Exploring these midlife self-writers as chroniclers of Generation X’s midlife in particular, Wittman coins the term "digital absence" to map their unique relationship to new forms of knowledge and knowledge gathering in an Information Age that they are both of and set apart from. She theorizes that their works share a "pedagogical style," a style characterized by clarity, exposition, and classical rhetoric, and a concern with the classroom, offering a warrant for reading them in pedagogical terms in concert with traditional scholarly approaches. Furthermore, Wittman presents readers with an overview of future midlife self-writing as well as self-writing overall, concluding that we might be looking at the scholarship of the future.

    Description: The Complete Poetry of Du Fu presents a complete scholarly translation of Chinese literature alongside the original text in a critical edition. The English translation is more scholarly than vernacular Chinese translations, and it is compelled to address problems that even the best traditional commentaries overlook.The main body of the text is a facing page translation and critical edition of the earliest Song editions and other sources. For convenience the translations are arranged following the sequence in Qiu Zhao’an’s Du shi xiangzhu (although Qiu’s text is not followed). Basic footnotes are included when the translation needs clarification or supplement. Endnotes provide sources, textual notes, and a limited discussion of problem passages. A supplement references commonly used allusions, their sources, and where they can be found in the translation.Scholars know that there is scarcely a Du Fu poem whose interpretation is uncontested. The scholar may use this as a baseline to agree or disagree. Other readers can feel confident that this is a credible reading of the text within the tradition. A reader with a basic understanding of the language of Chinese poetry can use this to facilitate reading Du Fu, which can present problems for even the most learned reader.

Exploring these midlife self-writers as chroniclers of Generation X’s midlife in particular, Wittman coins the term "digital absence" to map their unique relationship to new forms of knowledge and knowledge gathering in an Information Age that they are both of and set apart from. She theorizes that their works share a "pedagogical style," a style characterized by clarity, exposition, and classical rhetoric, and a concern with the classroom, offering a warrant for reading them in pedagogical terms in concert with traditional scholarly approaches. Furthermore, Wittman presents readers with an overview of future midlife self-writing as well as self-writing overall, concluding that we might be looking at the scholarship of the future.

    Description: The study examines cultural effects of various colonial systems of government in the Spanish- and French-speaking Caribbean in a little investigated period of transition: from the French Revolution to the abolition of slavery in Cuba (1789–1886). The comparison of cultural transfer processes by means of literary production from and about the Caribbean, embedded in a broader context of the circulation of culture and knowledge deciphers the different transculturations of European discourses in the colonies as well as the repercussions of these transculturations on the motherland’s ideas of the colonial other: The loss of a culturally binding centre in the case of the Spanish colonies – in contrast to France’s strong presence and binding force – is accompanied by a multirelationality which increasingly shapes hispanophone Caribbean literature and promotes the pursuit for political independence. The book provides necessary revision to the idea that the 19th-century Caribbean can only be understood as an outpost of the European metropolises. Examining the kaleidoscope of the colonial Caribbean opens new insights into the early processes of cultural globalisation and questions our established concept of a genuine western modernity. The prominence of letters in recent fiction is due in part to the rediscovery, by contemporary writers, of letters as an effective tool for rendering aspects of historicity, liminality, marginalization and the expression of subjectivity vis-à-vis an ‘other’; it is also due, however, to the artistically challenging inclusion of the new electronic media of communication into fiction.     Description: In recent years there has been a huge amount of both popular and academic interest in storytelling as something that is an essential part of not only literature and art but also our everyday lives as well as our dreams, fantasies, aspirations, historical self-understanding, and political actions. The question of the ethics of storytelling always, inevitably, lurks behind these discussions, though most frequently it remains implicit rather than explicit. This volume explores the ethical potential and risks of storytelling from an interdisciplinary perspective. It stages a dialogue between contemporary literature and visual arts across media (film, photography, performative arts), interdisciplinary theoretical perspectives (debates in narrative studies, trauma studies, cultural memory studies, ethical criticism), and history (traumatic histories of violence, cultural history). The collection analyses ethical issues involved in different strategies employed in literature and art to narrate experiences that resist telling and imagining, such as traumatic historical events, including war and political conflicts. The chapters explore the multiple ways in which the ethics of storytelling relates to the contemporary arts as they work with, draw on, and contribute to historical imagination. The book foregrounds the connection between remembering and imagining and explores the ambiguous role of narrative in the configuration of selves, communities, and the relation to the non-human. While discussing the ethical aspects of storytelling, it also reflects on the relevance of artistic storytelling practices for our understanding of ethics. Making an original contribution to interdisciplinary narrative studies and narrative ethics, this book both articulates a complex understanding of how artistic storytelling practices enable critical distance from culturally dominant narrative practices, and analyzes the limitations and potential pitfalls of storytelling.

    Description: Recent debates about the Anthropocene have prompted a re-negotiation of the relationship between human subjectivity and nonhuman matter within a wide range of disciplines. This collection builds on the assumption that our understanding of the nonhuman world is bound up with the experience of space: thinking about and with nonhuman spaces destabilizes human-scale assumptions. Literary form affords this kind of nonanthropocentric experience; one role of the critic in the Anthropocene is to foreground the function of space and description in challenging the conventional link between narrative and human (inter)subjectivity. Bringing together New Formalism, ecocriticism, and narrative theory, the included essays demonstrate that literature can transgress the strong and long-established boundary of the human frame that literary and narrative scholarship clings to. The focus is firmly on the contemporary but with strategic samplings in earlier cultural texts (the American transcendentalists, modernist fiction) that anticipate present-day anxieties about the nonhuman, while at the same time offering important conceptual tools for working through them.

    Description: The poetry of Ruan Ji has been previously translated several times, with one fully scholarly translation of both the poetry and the Fu (poetic expositions). The present translation not only provides a facing page critical Chinese text, it addresses two problems that have been ignored or not adequately treated in earlier works. First, it traces the history of the current text. The rather serious problems with this text will be, if not soluble, at least visible. Second, translations have been shaped by the anachronistic assumption that Ruan Ji was loyal to the declining Wei dynasty, when actual power had been taken by the Suma family, who founded the Jin dynasty after Ruan Ji's death. The introduction shows how and when that assumption took full shape five centuries after Ruan Ji lived and why it is not tenable. This leads to a different kind of translation, closer to what a contemporary reader might have understood and far less certain than referring it to some political event. The Poetry of Xi Kang presents a complete scholarly translation of his poetic works (including "Rhapsody on the Zither") alongside the original texts. Many of Xi Kang's poems are difficult and most are laden with allusions and quotations, adding another level of challenge to interpretation. Basic explanatory notes are provided. The translations are based on the critical modern edition of Xi Kang's work by Dai Mingyang, generally considered to be the best edition available. Important editions by Lu Xun and Lu Qinli are consulted on matters of variants, arrangement, and interpretation.

Jahrhunderts mehr Frauen die akademische Lehrbefugnis verliehen als an allen anderen Instituten des deutschsprachigen Raums. 1921 habilitierte sich die Literaturhistorikerin Christine Touaillon (1878–1928), 1924 die Romantikforscherin Marianne Thalmann (1888–1975) und 1927 die Volks- und Germanenkundlerin Lily Weiser (1898–1987). Ausgehend von diesem Befund widmet sich die vorliegende Studie der Wissenschafts- und Institutionengeschichte der Wiener Germanistik und zeigt, dass das Selbstverständnis und die disziplinäre Ausdifferenzierung eines Faches wesentlich dessen personelle Umsetzung und damit auch den Status von Außenseitern, mithin von Frauen, im Wissenschaftsbetrieb beeinflussen.

    Description: In The New Midlife Self-Writing, Wittman treats recent self-writing by Rachel Cusk, Roxane Gay, Sarah Manguso, and Maggie Nelson, carefully situating these vital midlife works within the history of self-writing. She argues that they renew and redirect the autobiographical trajectories characteristic of earlier self-writing by switching their orientation to face the future and by celebrating midlife as growing season, a time of Bildung. In each chapter, writer-by-writer, she demonstrates how the midlife self-writers in question trace confident and future-oriented paths through the past, rejecting triumphalism and complicating both identity and individualism, just as they refine and redefine genres. Exploring these midlife self-writers as chroniclers of Generation X’s midlife in particular, Wittman coins the term "digital absence" to map their unique relationship to new forms of knowledge and knowledge gathering in an Information Age that they are both of and set apart from. She theorizes that their works share a "pedagogical style," a style characterized by clarity, exposition, and classical rhetoric, and a concern with the classroom, offering a warrant for reading them in pedagogical terms in concert with traditional scholarly approaches. Furthermore, Wittman presents readers with an overview of future midlife self-writing as well as self-writing overall, concluding that we might be looking at the scholarship of the future.

    Description: This volume is devoted to literature and the arts that were created in Paris from 1917–1962. The starting point is Vilém Flusser's conviction that migration experience and cultural innovation should be closely linked. France became the world's second most important immigration country after the United States in the interwar period. Authors came to the French metropolis from Eastern Europe, after the strengthening of the fascists from Italy, after 1933 from Germany, after the Spanish Civil War and after the consolidation of the Estado Novo in Portugal. Artists from Latin America were also present in Paris, and the Congrès international des écrivains pour la défense de la culture in June 1935 made the city the centre of intellectual resistance to fascism. But writers from all over the world also migrated to France after the Second World War. In addition to almost all languages ​​of Romania, the articles also take into account the Arabic, Hebrew, German, Russian and Polish literature. This comparative approach can reveal unusual perspectives, relationships and fault lines.

    Description: Architecture and the Novel under the Italian Fascist Regime discusses the relationship between the novel and architecture during the Fascist period in Italy (1922-1943). By looking at two profoundly diverse aesthetic phenomena within the context of the creation of a Fascist State art, Billiani and Pennacchietti argue that an effort of construction, or reconstruction, was the main driving force behind both projects: the advocated “revolution” of the novel form (realism) and that of architecture (rationalism). The book is divided into seven chapters, which in turn analyze the interconnections between the novel and architecture in theory and in practice. The first six chapters cover debates on State art, on the novel and on architecture, as well as their historical development and their unfolding in key journals of the period. The last chapter offers a detailed analysis of some important novels and buildings, which have in practice realized some of the key principles articulated in the theoretical disputes.

    Description: While the connections between science fiction and race have largely been neglected by scholars, racial identity is a key element of the subjectivity constructed in American SF. In his Mars series, Edgar Rice Burroughs primarily supported essentialist constructions of racial identity, but also included a few elements of racial egalitarianism. Writing in the 1930s, George S. Schuyler revised Burroughs' normative SF triangle of white author, white audience, and white protagonist and promoted an individualistic, highly variable concept of race instead. While both Burroughs and Schuyler wrote SF focusing on racial identity, the largely separate genres of science fiction and African American literature prevented the similarities between the two authors from being adequately acknowledged and explored. Beginning in the 1960s, Samuel R. Delany more fully joined SF and African American literature. Delany expands on Schuyler's racial constructionist approach to identity, including gender and sexuality in addition to race. Critically intertwining the genres of SF and African American literature allows a critique of the racism in the science fiction and a more accurate and positive portrayal of the scientific connections in the African American literature. Connecting the popular fiction of Burroughs, the controversial career of Schuyler, and the postmodern texts of Delany illuminates a gradual change from a stable, essentialist construction of racial identity at the turn of the century to the variable, social construction of poststructuralist subjectivity today.

    Description: The introductory chapter frames Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and its dramatisation of romantic love within the recent affective turn, defining affect as relational and discursive movements that are intelligible as individual, nameable emotions based on their adherence to certain cultural taxonomies. This definition entails my overall query: what are the taxonomies according to which affective movements become readable as amorous emotion in Romeo and Juliet? To showcase that these patterns not only pertain to verbal language, I also discuss symphonic and balletic adaptations of the play, specifically Hector Berlioz’s dramatic symphony Roméo et Juliette (1839) and Sasha Waltz’s staging of the Berlioz’s symphony for the Paris Opera Ballet (2007).
