Description: "Making Sense of World History is a comprehensive and accessible textbook that helps students understand the key themes of world history within a chronological framework stretching from ancient times to the present day. To lend coherence to its narrative, the book employs a set of organizing devices that connect times, places, and/or themes. This narrative is supported by: Flowcharts that show how phenomena within diverse broad themes interact in generating key processes and events in world history. A discussion of the common challenges faced by different types of agent, including rulers, merchants, farmers, and parents, and a comparison of how these challenges were addressed in different times and places. An exhaustive and balanced treatment of themes such as culture, politics, and economy, with an emphasis on interaction. Explicit attention to skill acquisition in organizing information, cultural sensitivity, comparison, visual literacy, integration, interrogating primary sources, and critical thinking. A focus on historical “episodes” that are carefully related to each other. Through the use of such devices, the book shows the cumulative effect of thematic interactions through time, communicates the many ways in which societies have influenced each other through history, and allows us to compare and contrast how they have reacted to similar challenges. They also allow the reader to transcend historical controversies and can be used to stimulate class discussions and guide student assignments. With a unified authorial voice and offering a narrative from the ancient to the present, this is the go-to textbook for World History courses and students. The Open Access version of this book, available at https://www.taylorfrancis.com/books/9781003013518, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license."

Description: This book examines how Indigenous Peoples around the world are demanding greater data sovereignty, and challenging the ways in which governments have historically used Indigenous data to develop policies and programs. In the digital age, governments are increasingly dependent on data and data analytics to inform their policies and decision-making. However, Indigenous Peoples have often been the unwilling targets of policy interventions and have had little say over the collection, use and application of data about them, their lands and cultures. At the heart of Indigenous Peoples’ demands for change are the enduring aspirations of self-determination over their institutions, resources, knowledge and information systems. With contributors from Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand, North and South America and Europe, this book offers a rich account of the potential for Indigenous data sovereignty to support human flourishing and to protect against the ever-growing threats of data-related risks and harms.

Description: Even for violent crime, justice should mean more than punishment. By paying close attention to the relational harms suffered by victims, this book develops a concept of relational justice for survivors, offenders and community. Relational justice looks beyond traditional rules of legal responsibility to include the social and emotional dimensions of human experience, opening the way for a more compassionate, effective and just response to crime. The book’s chapters follow a journey from victim experiences of violence to community healing from violence. Early chapters examine the relational harms inflicted by the worst wrongs, the moral responsibility of wrongdoers and common mistakes made in judging wrongdoing. Particular attention is paid here to sexual violence. The book then moves to questions of just punishment: proper sentencing by judges, mandatory sentences approved by the public, and the realities of contemporary incarceration, focusing particularly on solitary confinement and sexual violence. In its remaining chapters, the book looks at changes brought by the victims' rights movement and victim needs that current law does not, and perhaps cannot meet. It then addresses possibilities for offender change and challenges for majority America in addressing race discrimination in criminal justice. The book concludes with a look at how individuals might live out the ideals of a greater—relational—justice.

Description: Locating Imagination in Popular Culture offers a multi-disciplinary account of the ways in which popular culture, tourism and notions of place intertwine in an environment characterized by ongoing processes of globalization, digitization and an increasingly ubiquitous nature of multi-media. Centred around the concept of imagination, the authors demonstrate how popular culture and media are becoming increasingly important in the ways in which places and localities are imagined, and how they also subsequently stimulate a desire to visit the actual places in which people’s favourite stories are set. With examples drawn from around the globe, the book offers a unique study of the role of narratives conveyed through media in stimulating and reflecting desire in tourism. This book will have appeal in a wide variety of academic disciplines, ranging from media and cultural studies to fan- and tourism studies, cultural geography, literary studies and cultural sociology.

Description: "This book offers the first comprehensive study of the many interfaces shaping the relationship between comics and videogames. It combines in-depth conceptual reflection with a rich selection of paradigmatic case studies from contemporary media culture. The editors have gathered a distinguished group of international scholars working at the interstices of comics studies and game studies to explore two interrelated areas of inquiry: The first part of the book focuses on hybrid medialities and experimental aesthetics ""between"" comics and videogames; the second part zooms in on how comics and videogames function as transmedia expansions within an increasingly convergent and participatory media culture. The individual chapters address synergies and intersections between comics and videogames via a diverse set of case studies ranging from independent and experimental projects via popular franchises from the corporate worlds of DC and Marvel to the more playful forms of media mix prominent in Japan. Offering an innovative intervention into a number of salient issues in current media culture, Comics and Videogames will be of interest to scholars and students of comics studies, game studies, popular culture studies, transmedia studies, and visual culture studies."

Description: In May 12, 2008, the Wenchuan County earthquake caused devastating loss of human life and property. Applying all the remote sensing technology available, the Chinese Academy of Sciences immediately launched into action, making full use of its state-of-the-art facilities, remote sensing planes, and satellites to amass invaluable optical and radar data. This unprecedented use of comprehensive remote sensing techniques provided accurate, up to the minute information for disaster management and has left us with a visually stunning and beautiful record that is as much a scientific achievement as it is an artistic one. Based on the accumulated data and images collected by the Project Team of Remote Sensing Monitoring and Assessment of the Wenchuan Earthquake, Atlas of Remote Sensing of the Wenchuan Earthquake documents the events as they happened in real time. The book covers the disaster from six aspects: geological, barrier lakes, collapsed buildings, damaged roads, destroyed farmland and forests, and demolished infrastructure. It also demonstrates that the Dujiangyan Irrigation Project, which has been standing for 2000 years, remains fully functioning, and keeps the Chengdu Plain operating optimally even after the earthquake. Translated into English for the first time, the Atlas presents a pictorial summation of this unique project. It chronicles the event with over 280 before and after color images from a range of perspectives. This volume dramatically demonstrates the value of remote sensing for understanding how an earthquake unfolds and the potential of remote sensing in helping coordinate emergency relief. A pictorial record of events as they unfolded, this book provides a systematic documentation of earthquake damage that can be used to prepare for future seismic events.

Description: With attention to the transnational dance world of salsa, this book explores the circulation of people, imaginaries, dance movements, conventions and affects from a transnational perspective. Through interviews and ethnographic, multi-sited research in Havana and several European cities, the author draws on the notion of ‘entangled mobilities’ to show how the intimate gendered and ethnicized moves on the dance floor relate to the cross-border mobility of salsa dance professionals and their students. A combination of research on migration and mobility with studies of music and dance, Entangled Mobilities in the Transnational Salsa Circuit contributes to the fields of transnationalism, mobility and dance studies, thus providing a deeper theoretical and empirical understanding of gendered and racialized transnational phenomena. As such it will appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in migration, cultural studies and gender studies.

Description: Understanding the physical and biogeochemical interactions and feedbacks between the ocean and atmosphere is a vital component of environmental and Earth system research. The ability to predict and respond to future environmental change relies on a detailed understanding of these processes. The Surface Ocean-Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS) is an international research platform that focuses on the study of ocean-atmosphere interactions, for which Future Earth is a sponsor. SOLAS instigated a collaborative initiative process to connect efforts in the natural and social sciences related to these processes, as a contribution to the emerging Future Earth Ocean Knowledge-Action Network (Ocean KAN). This is imperative because many of the recent changes in the Earth system are anthropogenic. An understanding of adaptation and counteracting measures requires an alliance of scientists from both domains to bridge the gap between science and policy. To this end, three SOLAS research areas were targeted for a case study to determine a more effective method of interdisciplinary research: valuing carbon and the ocean’s role; air-sea interactions, policy and stewardship; and, air-sea interactions and the shipping industry.

Description: Monowai is an active submarine volcanic centre in the Kermadec Arc, Southwest Pacific Ocean. Multi-beam data acquired during expedition SO225 aboard R/V SONNE in December 2012 indicates that the topography of the main stratocone has evolved significantly since the last survey in June 2011. Bathymetric measurements of the edifice reveal differences of up to 42 m in seafloor depth and indicate a net volume increase of ∼0.037 km3 across the summit area. Explosive volcanism observed onsite during the SO225 mapping campaign could be linked to a 20h-long swarm of unusually coherent T phase arrivals, suggesting that Monowai is a prime source of broadband seismic noise in the Southwest Pacific region during times of activity. Our findings further document the dynamic nature of volcanic processes at Monowai and have implications for future expedition planning.

Description: This study examined the residential perceptions of industrial activities in Ilupeju, Lagos, Nigeria. The relevance of distance decay theory, which postulates that the magnitude of effects of the outputs from an industrial establishment would decrease with increasing distance from the point of origin, was tested in the study. Global Positioning System was used to capture the coordinates of the identified firms in Ilupeju. Additionally, two different sets of structured questionnaire were designed; the first set, which was distributed among the industrialists, sought information on the types of waste generated among others while the second set was randomly distributed among the residents and was used to elicit information on the types of pollution emanating from the industries, socioeconomic benefits, among others. The result shows that there is a significant variation in the perceived effects as people living within 0.5 km to the industrial sites claimed to suffer more pollution than those living 1.5 km away from the industrial sites, which is consistent with the distance decay theory. On the other hand, the distance decay theory cannot explain socioeconomic impacts such as increase in living costs, among others as they are felt around the study area irrespective of distance away from the industrial sites.

Description: Dissimilatory iron reduction and sulfate reduction are the most important processes for anaerobic mineralization of organic carbon in marine sediments. The thermodynamics and kinetics of microbial Fe(III) reduction depend on the characteristics of the Fe(III) minerals, which influence the potential of Fe(III)-reducers to compete with sulfate-reducers for common organic substrates. In the present study, we tested different methods to quantify and characterize microbially reducible Fe(III) in sediments from a transect in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, using different standard sequential endpoint extractions and time-course extractions with either ascorbate or a Fe(III)-reducing microbial culture. Similar trends of increasing ‘reactive Fe’ content of the sediment along the fjord transect were found using the different extraction methods. However, the total amount of ‘reactive Fe’ extracted differed between the methods, due to different Fe dissolution mechanisms and different targeted Fe fractions. Time-course extractions additionally provided information on the reactivity and heterogeneity of the extracted Fe(III) minerals, which also impact the favorability for microbial reduction. Our results show which fractions of the existing Fe extraction protocols should be considered ‘reactive’ in the sense of being favorable for microbial Fe(III) reduction, which is important in studies on early diagenesis in marine sediments.

Description: Microbial metabolisms in sediments play a pivotal role in marine element cycling. In hydrothermal sediments chemosynthetic microorganisms likely prevail, while in non-hydrothermally impacted sediment regimes microorganisms associated with organic matter decomposition are primarily recognized. To test how these microorganisms are distributed along the hitherto neglected transition zone influenced to different degrees by hydrothermal input we sampled four sediment sites: these were (i) near an active vent, (ii) the outer rim, and (iii) the inactive area of the Kairei hydrothermal field as well as (iv) sediments roughly 200 km south-east of the Kairei field. Chemistry and microbial community compositions were different at all sampling sites. Against expectations, the sediments near the active vent did not host typical chemosynthetic microorganisms and chemistry did not indicate current, extensive hydrothermal venting. Data from the outer rim area of the active Kairei field suggested microbially mediated saponite production and diffuse hydrothermal flow from below accompanied by increased metal concentrations. A steep redox gradient in the inactive Kairei field points towards significant redox driven processes resulting in dissolution of hydrothermal precipitates and intense metal mobilization. Local microorganisms were primarily Chloroflexi, Bacillales, Thermoplasmata, and Thaumarchaeota.

Description: We present the results of a sedimentological and mineralogical study conducted on 305 marine sediment samples (32 seafloor grab samples and 273 subsea floor samples from 91 vibrocores) collected in the marine area of the eastern Pozzuoli Bay, offshore the area of Bagnoli, that has been the site of heavy industrial activity for more than a century. The coastal (onland-offshore) area of Bagnoli–Coroglio has been recognised as a contaminated Site of National Interest (SNI) by the Italian Ministry of the Environment (2000–2001) and since then it has been the subject of a series of environmental studies that have documented a severe contamination of soils onland and marine sediments offshore. Based on the outcomes of the sedimentological classification discussed in this study we have constructed a series of thematic maps illustrating the areal distribution of the sedimentary facies at different stratigraphic levels. Our interpretation provides a support in reconstructing the complex set of environmental changes that have affected the offshore of the eastern Pozzuoli Bay prior to and after the termination of the industrial activity of the Bagnoli brownfield.

From the three cores, 16 bulk organic carbon samples were selected because of the lack of macrofossil remains and radiocarbon dated using accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) at Poznań radiocarbon laboratory of Adam Mickiewicz University, Poland. In addition, 30 freeze-dried samples per core at 0.25 or 0.5 cm intervals between 0 and 15 cm were analysed for 210Pb/137Cs at the Liverpool University Environmental Radioactivity Laboratory. In this project, we analyse pollen and sedaDNA (Liu et al., 2020; doi:10.5061/dryad.69p8cz900) from three lake sediment cores from the Omoloy region in north-eastern Siberia (northern Yakutia), which are currently surrounded by different vegetation types ranging from typical tundra to open larch forest. First, our aim is to compare sedaDNA with the pollen data to see whether both methods track the same pattern with respect to compositional changes and diversity changes across the northern Russian treeline zone or are complementary to each other. Second, we reconstruct the mid- to late-Holocene changes of vegetation composition along a north–south transect. Third, we use the sedaDNA data to reconstruct variations in species richness and relate this to vegetation and climate change.

Description: Swiftia phaeton, a new species, is described for Mauritania where it is endemic at the upper bathyal. This azooxanthellate octocoral is distinctive from congeneric species in the NE Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea by the dark red coloration of the colonies and polyps, the presence of a layer of rod sclerites on top of the calyces and different sizes of polyps and sclerites. Coral gardens dominated by a species of the genus Swiftia Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864 were filmed for the first time it the southern NE Atlantic Ocean. The extensive Swiftia phaeton sp. nov. dominated habitats were recorded during the Phaeton expedition onboard Maria S. Merian in 2010 at the Mauritanian Slope between 20°24N and 17°54N in 470 - 640 m depth, co-occurring with the framework-forming scleractinians Lophelia pertusa (Linnaeus, 1758) and Madrepora oculata (Linnaeus, 1758). ROV video annotation based on size and density distribution of Swiftia enabled the characterization of the new biotope.

Description: Dissolved zirconium (Zr) is present in open-ocean seawater in low pmol/kg concentrations and studies for the Pacific Ocean reported an increase in concentration with depth although Zr is characterized as being particle-reactive. We observed the same pattern in this study and report the first data on dissolved Zr in the (sub)tropical Atlantic Ocean. We analyzed dissolved Zr in 194 Atlantic seawater samples (0.2 µm filtered) collected at 16 stations located in the (sub)tropical Atlantic during GEOTRACES cruise M81/1 (GEOTRACES cruise GA11, RV Meteor, 04.02.-08.03.2010). Seawater samples were collected with a trace metal clean CTD and filtration, subsampling and acidification was performed in the clean laboratory container onboard. Measurements were done using our newly developed online-preconcentration method for the SeaFAST-system (ESI, seaFAST 1) with subsequent analysis by quadrupole inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (Perkin-Elmer, ELAN DRC-e). Details on the preconcentration of Zr and the analytical measurement are provided in Poehle et al. 2015 (doi:10.1016/j.dsr.2014.11.014). Our results showed an increase in dissolved Zr with depth with some distinct maxima at intermediate depths along a NE-SW transect (30°N to 12°S) in the Atlantic. Surface depletion was less pronounced along the Atlantic SE-NW transect (12°S to 8°N) and disappeared almost completely at the northernmost station at 8°N. We suggest that dust deposited off West Africa scavenged Zr from surface waters and riverine discharge from the Amazon may represent a source to the West Atlantic. The correlation of Zr with Si hints to a coupling of Zr to the uptake and release on and from Si particles such as biogenic opal. Remineralization of Si-particulates in deep waters release Zr which seems to be stabilized in the dissolved phase by complexation with e.g. organic ligands. This is supported by a sequential filtration approach (0.2 µm and 0.015 µm filter pore size) on seawater samples collected in the Pacific Ocean (research cruise SO229, 2011) showing that up to 91% of dissolved Zr in deep waters are present in the fraction 〈 0.015 µm. Hence, truly dissolved or colloidally bound Zr seems to a reasonable explanation for the observed increase in concentration with depth. Submitted data include the date of sample collection, geographic coordinates, depth and the concentration of dissolved Zr in pmol/kg.

Description: These data report surface mass balance (SMB) stake measurements at the frontal part of Gourdon Glacier on James Ross Island, northern Antarctic Peninsula. The measurements were conducted by drilling stakes made of bamboo or aluminium into the ice. Changes in the height above the glacier surface were measured in yearly field campaigns during January/February from 2014 until 2017. The resulting height differences in meter ice equivalents [SMB (m i.e.)] are presented together with the coordinates [Latitude Start (°)], [Longitude Start (°)], [Latitude End (°)], [Longitude End (°)] and the elevation in regard to the WGS84 ellipsoid [Altitude Start (m)] and [Altitude End (m)] for the start and the end date of each measurement period. GNSS measurements were done with a single-frequency hand-held Garmin GPS 60. The mass balance measurements were not corrected for movement within one yearly measurement period.

Description: Surface current drifters were deployed east of Brava island (Cape Verde archipelago, Atlantic ocean) from the RV Meteor during the cruise M160, which took place between 22. November and 20. December 2019. The drifters were deployed in 3 clusters with 3 drifters per cluster. The utilized drifters are the MD03i from Albatros Marine Technologies, Spain. They have a cylinder shape with a 10 cm diameter and 32 cm length. About 8 cm protrude from the water surface and a drogue of both 50 cm length and diameter is attached to each drifter 50 cm below the sea surface so that difter represent currents in the upper 1 m surface layer. The drifter obtains the GPS position and transmits it via the satellite communication system Iridium to the vessel. The overall ratio of drag area inside to drag area outside the water is 33.2.

Description: Profiles and time-series of Oxygen, pH and CO2 was measured in situ in shallow (〈10cm) tidal ponds located in the salt marshes of the Plum Island Estuary, MA, USA. The investigation was conducted using a novel needle optode profiling system from PreSens GmBH with an Automated Micromanipulator and needle-type optodes for measurements of oxygen (PM-PSt7), pH (PM-HP5), and CO2 (PM-CDM1 prototypes), respectively. The data provide novel information about the spatial and temporal variation of oxygen, pH and CO2 in water and sediment, driven by microphytobenthic photosynthesis and respiration. These parameters vary markedly throughout the day due to changes in light availability and temperature. The data characterizes salt marsh tidal ponds as a habitat with extreme oxygen dynamics. Data includes 1) In situ Oxygen, pH and CO2 profiles across the sediment-water interface in shallow salt marsh tidal ponds at 3 different times of the day; morning, afternoon and night, respectively; 2) Oxygen and pH profiles across the sediment-water interface under different light regimes; 0. 25, 150, 350 PAR (0 μmol photons m−2 s−1), respectively; 3) In situ time series of Oxygen, pH and temperature in shallow salt marsh tidal ponds.; 4) Oxygen profiles across the sediment-water interface in shallow salt marsh tidal ponds under different in situ light regimes, determined by a natural layer of seafoam covering the water surface.; 5) In situ oxygen profiles across the sediment-water interface in 3 different tidal ponds in the Plum Island Estuary.; 6) Oxygen profiles across the sediment-water interface in three different habitats in salt marshes: a) Tidal river; submerged sediment. b) Tidal ponds; submerged sediment and c) Vegetated marsh platform; intertidal.

Description: The emission of anthropogenic carbon dioxide leads to the lowering of seawater pH. Ocean acidification is a major problem for marine calcifying organisms. There is a need to study short- and long-term effects of lowered pH on marine organisms such as oysters. Oysters are an important food source and useful for nutrients recycling in the coastal estuarine environments. The coastal estuarine environment such as mangrove ecosystems connected to the Sargasso Sea, Ferry Reach, Bermuda, has a natural variation of pH according to the changes in tidal regime (thus low and high tide activities). The unique environment serves as a model place to carry out the effect of changing pH on a marine organism such as flat tree oysters inhabiting this coastal ecosystem. For the laboratory experiment, a total of 84 specimens of the flat tree oyster, Isognomon alatus, were randomly collected on 21 January 2009 from rocks exposed at low tide in Mullet Bay, an intertidal mudflat, St. George, Bermuda (latitude: 32° 22' 30'' N, longitude: 64° 41' 35''W). An experiment was performed to test the effect of projected future pH decrease in a seawater flow-through system at Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) for a short period (February to April 2009). Physicochemical conditions (seawater temperature, salinity, pH and oxygen concentration) in three control tanks (C1, C2, C3, pH = 8.1 - 8.2) and three acidification tanks (T1, T2, T3, pH = 7.8 - 7.9) used for the culture of the oysters were recorded. Changes in shell morphometrics of the oysters were determined. For the field experiment, 42 specimens of I. alatus were randomly placed in 6 tanks (approx. n = 7 oysters/tank). Two tanks were then positioned along the transect at each station (A, B ,C) in Mangrove Bay, Bermuda. The shell parameters of flat tree oysters and physicochemical conditions were monitored biweekly.

Description: In this work we used controlled microcosms to study the effect of temperature and pH on brGDGTs in lake water. We collected surface water from Kennedy Lake, Tucson, AZ, a shallow eutrophic artificial reservoir previously described by Martínez-Sosa & Tierney (2019). From the collected samples we set up a series of microcosms, consisting of 1L glass flasks filled with lake water, and manipulated single environmental factors including temperature and pH. For our temperature incubations, we selected four conditions (9C, 18C, 27C and 35C) and incubated 3 1L flasks under each condition for two periods of time (4 or 6 weeks). For the pH incubations, we used commercially available freshwater aquarium non-phosphate buffers (Proprietary composition, Seachem, Madison, GA, USA) to manipulate the pH of the microcosms. For these experiments we targeted four pH conditions (4, 5, 6 and 7), and included two control samples: one where we added enough buffer to maintain the initial pH (Control + Buffer), and another to which we added no buffer (Control - Buffer). GDGTs were analyzed on an Agilent 1260 Infinity HPLC coupled to an Agilent 6120 single quadrupole mass spectrometer using two BEH HILIC silica columns (2.1 x 150 mm, 1.7 um; Waters) and the methodology of Hopmans et al. (2016). We calculated peak areas using the MATLAB package software ORIGAmI (Fleming et al. 2016) and estimated the concentration of brGDGTs by comparing the obtained peaks with a C46 internal standard (Huguet et al. 2006) normalized to the volume of each sample.

Description: A high-resolution carbonate C-isotope (δ13Ccarb) stratigraphy for the Aptian is presented for the Cau core from Alicante, Spain. The studied succession, lower to upper Aptian, embraces the record of the Early Aptian OAE 1a. The data provided includes δ13Ccarb, δ18O isotopes, Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and CaCO3. Four overlapping cores (D1 to D4) were drilled with an almost 100% recovery of a total (corrected for dip) thickness of 143 m. The cores were split in two parts. One half was described, photographed and scanned, and then sampled with a drill to obtain powdered samples for geochemical analyses. Also, small solid samples were taken from the drill for biostratigraphic characterization of the nannofossil and planktonic foraminifera associations. Second half was stored for archive and future research.
