Description: Work has been continuing on the correlation spectrometry techniques described at previous remote sensing symposiums. Advances in the techniques are described which enable accurate quantitative measurements of diffused atmospheric gases to be made using controlled light sources, accurate quantitative measurements of gas clouds relative to background using solar illumination and semi-quantitation measurements of well diffused atmospheric gases using solar illumination. Specific applications of these techniques are described including preliminary results of a high altitude balloon experiment designed to test the feasibility of measuring pollution at the earth's surface from high altitude balloons and satellites.

Description: A spaceborne clock experiment is proposed with the objectives of improving international time and frequency comparisons, studying precise one-way Doppler tracking and one-way ranging techniques, performing relativistic studies, and developing new atomic frequency standards technology. Various alternatives are considered for accomplishing these goals, including the use of existing satellite and earth-based time dissemination systems as well as the development of a new frequency standard for this specific application. One conclusion is that several attractive alternatives already exist for meeting the goal of improved time and frequency dissemination. However, to achieve all the other 4 goals at the NASA-stated levels of accuracy, a spaceborne atomic frequency standard may be required. An analysis of achievements to date with quartz oscillators, rubidium standards, cesium beam standards, hydrogen masers, and several other possibilities leads to the conclusion that cesium and rubidium standards offer the best choices for the experiment as proposed by NASA. The greatest obstacle to a spaceborne atomic standard appears to be its electrical power requirements.

Description: The design and development of a hybrid thermocouple, having a segmented SiGe-PbTe n-leg encapsulated within a hollow cylindrical p-SiGe leg, is described. Hybrid couple efficiency is calculated to be 10% to 15% better than that of a all-SiGe couple. A preliminary design of a planar RTG, employing hybrid couples and a water heat pipe radiator, is described as an example of a possible system application. Hybrid couples, fabricated initially, were characterized by higher than predicted resistance and, in some cases, bond separations. Couples made later in the program, using improved fabrication techniques, exhibited normal resistances, both as-fabricated and after 700 hours of testing. Two flat-plate sections of the reference design thermoelectric converter were fabricated and delivered to NASA Lewis for testing and evaluation.

Description: The balloon interrogation package (BIP), an integral part of the overall interrogation, recording, and location subsystems (IRLS) for the Nimbus 4 program, is described. The BIP is a self-contained, integrated transponder designed to be carried aloft by a constant altitude, superpressure balloon to an altitude of 67,000 or 78,000 feet. After launch the BIP senses high-altitude balloon overpressure and temperature, and upon receipt of an interrogated command from the IRLS aboard the Nimbus 4 satellite, the BIP enodes the data on a real-time basis into a pulse-code modulation (PCM) format and transmits this data to the satellite. A summary of the program activity to produce 30 BIP systems and to support balloon launches from Ascension Island is presented.

Description: Utility of the Marshall Space Flight (MSFC) facsimile camera system for extraterrestrial geologic exploration was investigated during the spring of 1971 near Merriam Crater in northern Arizona. Although the system with its present hard-wired recorder operates erratically, the imagery showed that the camera could be developed as a prime imaging tool for automated missions. Its utility would be enhanced by development of computer techniques that utilize digital camera output for construction of topographic maps, and it needs increased resolution for examining near field details. A supplementary imaging system may be necessary for hand specimen examination at low magnification.

Description: Description of a refractory metal thermocouple research program, directed towards establishing the parameters that are necessary to achieve reliable, long term, high temperature thermocouple performance. A description of special apparatus for exposing bare-wire thermoelements to high temperatures in vacuum and in high purity gaseous environments is given, and the design and performance of an ultra-high-vacuum, high-temperature furnace system are described. Bare-wire W-3 per cent Re and W-25 per cent Re thermoelements were exposed at 2400 K in argon, hydrogen, or vacuum, and experienced a shift in their emf-temperature relationship upon initial exposure. After the initial shift, the thermoelements exposed in the gaseous environments experienced no significant further change in their emf-temperature relationship for periods up to 1000 hrs. The thermoelements exposed in vacuum continually drifted in their emf-temperature relationship as a result of the preferential loss of Re by evaporation.

Description: Stacked glass plates have been used to calibrate a laboratory spectrophotometer, over the spectral range 0.5-2.5 microns, for specular light. The uncalibrated instrument was characterized by systematic errors when used to measure the reflectance and transmittance of stacked glass plates. Calibration included first, a determination of the reflectance of a standard composed of barium sulfate paint deposited on an aluminum plate; second, the approximation of the reflectance and transmittance residuals between observed and computed values by means of cubic equations; and, finally, the removal of the systematic errors by a computer. The instrument, after calibration, was accurate to 1% when used to measure the reflectance and transmittance of stacked glass plates.

Description: A thermal conductivity cell is described for making measurements of the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of small samples of powdered dielectric materials. The principle used is that of the line heat source. A novel way is described for applying this method so that much smaller samples than normal may be tested. This size requirement is necessary for investigations involving limited samples as does the Lunar Science Program. The method is checked by measuring the conductivity of standard samples and comparing the results with those found in the literature.

Description: A single scan TV-radiography system capable of providing analogue signals ready for A-D conversion for input to a computer has been investigated. Modulation transfer functions of both horizontal and vertical resolution have been obtained. The capability for gray scale reproduction was also investigated. The output data rate of the system is 16 KHz thereby providing compatibility to A-D converters generally available for most computers. In general, the capability of the system was found to exceed the input capabilities of available image-amplifiers and is therefore acceptable for quantitative fluoroscopic applications.

Description: The normally weak polarization force density, exerted on insulating dielectric liquids by a nonuniform electric field, is enhanced if high pressures are used. The nonuniform electric field acts as an elastic ?wall' to contain and guide the dielectric fluid. A general theory for these electrohydrodynamic (EHD) conduits has been developed. An illustrative example of the EHD conduits is the dielectric siphon consisting of two U-shaped electrodes held adjacent to each other by insulating nylon screws.

Description: Current efforts to exploit the spatial redundancy and built-in imaging of holographic optical techniques to provide high information densities without critical alignment and tight mechanical tolerances are reviewed. Read-write-erase in situ operation is possible but is presently impractical because of limitations in available recording media. As these are overcome, it should prove feasible to build holographic bulk memories with mechanically replaceable hologram plates featuring very fast (less than 2 microsec) random access to large (greater than 100 million bit) data blocks and very high throughput (greater than 500 Mbit/sec). Using volume holographic storage it may eventually be possible to realize random-access mass memories which require no mechanical motion and yet provide very high capacity.

Description: Magnetic tape recorders have long been used on satellites and spacecraft for onboard storage of large quantities of data. As satellites enter into commercial service, long operating life at high reliability becomes important. Also, the presently planned long-duration space flights to the outer planets require long-life tape recorders. Past satellite tape recorders have achieved a less than satisfactory performance record and the operating life of other spacecraft tape recorders has been relatively short and unpredictable. Most failures have resulted from malfunctions of the mechanical tape transport. Recent advances in electric motors and static memories have allowed the development of a new tape recorder which uses a very simple tape transport with few possible failure modes. It consists only of two brushless dc motors, two tape guides, and the recording heads. Relatively low tape tension, wide torque capability, and precise speed control facilitate design for mechanical reliability to match that of tape-recorder electronics.

Description: Critical review of a recent paper in which Denison, Stevenson, and Fox (1971) discussed the sources of spectral broadening in the laser Doppler velocimeter. It is pointed out that, in their discussion, the above-mentioned authors indicated that the spread in wave vectors of the incident and detected fields and the finite length of time a scattering center stayed in the sample volume each contributed separately and independently to the observed spectral width of the scattered radiation. This statement is termed incorrect, and it is shown that the two effects are one and the same.

Description: The sampling probe to measure the free stream gas composition in a hypersonic wind tunnel is described. Using a free expansion of the continuum flow, a series of sampling inlet-pumping stages is evaluated. Mass analysis is carried out with a quadrupole mass spectrometer employing a crossed electron beam, molecular beam ion source, and an off-axis electron multiplier. The spatial distribution of the sampled molecular flux and the pumping requirements are evaluated for varying inlet conditions of gas density and flow velocity. The signal-to-noise ratio of the molecular beam formed by this series of coaxial inlets is also determined. The signal-to-noise ratio of the unscattered flux is sufficiently high that an unambiguous determination of the beam composition and of the free stream gas properties can be made. The magnitude of the detected signal is sufficiently high that measurement of trace constituents two orders of magnitude below the primary beam signal can be made.

Description: An experimental technique which allows visual observations of the wall area in turbulent pipe flow is described in detail. It requires neither the introduction of any injection or measuring device into the flow nor the presence of a two-phase flow or of a non-Newtonian fluid. The technique involves suspending solid MgO particles of colloidal size in trichloroethylene and photographing their motions near the wall with a high speed movie camera moving with the flow. Trichloroethylene was chosen in order to eliminate the index of refraction problem in a curved wall. Evaluation of the technique including a discussion of limitations is included. Also the technique is compared with previous methods of visual observations of turbulent flow.

Description: A leak detection system has been developed, consisting of a tape that can be wrapped around possible leak sites on a system pressurized with air or gaseous nitrogen. Carbon monoxide, at a level of 100 to 1000 parts per million is used as a trace gas in the pressurized system. The sensitive element of the tape is palladium chloride supported on specially prepared silica gel and specially dried. At a CO level of 100 ppm and a leak rate of 10-20 ml/hr, discoloration of the sensitive element is observed in 1.5 to 3 min. The tape and trace gas are compatible with aerospace hardware, safe to handle, and economically reasonable to produce and handle.

Description: Many factors influence the accuracy with which the satellite positions may be derived from Baker-Nunn observations. Some of these factors are more important than others. In an accuracy study of satellite tracking methods there are invariably two distinct aspects to be investigated: the accuracy with which the satellite position can be referred to the reference system used - the stellar framework in the case of the optical observations, and the accuracy of the instant of observation. It is generally desirable to keep time as an independent variable so that any uncertainty in measuring the time of observation will be reflected in the positional accuracy.

Description: The results of astrometric and photogrammetric plate reduction techniques for a short focal length camera are compared. Several astrometric models are tested on entire and limited plate areas to analyze their ability to remove systematic errors from interpolated satellite directions using a rigorous photogrammetric reduction as a standard. Residual plots are employed to graphically illustrate the analysis. Conclusions are made as to what conditions will permit the astrometric reduction to achieve comparable accuracies to those of photogrammetric reduction when applied for short focal length ballistic cameras.

Description: A hydrogen slush density reference system was designed for calibration of field-type instruments and/or transfer standards. The device is based on the buoyancy principle of Archimedes. The solids are weighed in a low-mass container so arranged that solids and container are buoyed by triple-point liquid hydrogen during the weighing process. Several types of hydrogen slush density transducers were developed and tested for possible use as transfer standards. The most successful transducers found were those which depend on change in dielectric constant, after which the Clausius-Mossotti function is used to relate dielectric constant and density.

Description: The design of electrometer circuitry using an integrated circuit operational amplifier with a MOSFET input is described. Input protection against static voltages is provided by a dual ultra low leakage diode or a neon lamp. Factors affecting frequency response leakage resistance, and current stability are discussed, and methods are suggested for increasing response speed and for eliminating leakage resistance and current instabilities. Based on the above, two practical circuits, one having a linear response and the other a logarithmic response, were designed and evaluated experimentally. The design of a sweep circuit to implement mobility measurements using atmospheric probes is presented. A triangular voltage waveform is generated and shaped to contain a step in voltage from zero volts in both positive and negative directions.

Description: A previous flight test of two electro-optical pilot warning indicators, using a flashing xenon strobe and silicon detectors as cooperative elements, pointed out several design deficiencies. The present laboratory evaluation program corrected these faults and calibrated the sensitivity of both systems in azimuth elevation and range. The laboratory tests were performed on an optical bench and consisted of three basic components: (1) a xenon strobe lamp whose output is monitored at the indicator detector to give pulse to pulse information on energy content at the receiver; (2) a strobe light attenuating optical system which is calibrated photometrically to provide simulated range; and (3) a positioning table on which the indicator system under study is mounted and which provides spatial location coordinates for all data points. The test results for both systems are tabulated.

Description: A technique is presented for minimizing Mapping Camera film usage by reducing redundant coverage while meeting the desired sidelap of greater than or equal to 55%. The technique uses the normal groundtrack separation determined as a function of the number of revolutions between the respective tracks, of the initial and final nodal azimuths (or orbital inclination), and of the lunar latitude. The technique is also applicable for planning Panoramic Camera photography such that photographic contiguity is attained but redundant coverage is minimized. Graphs are included for planning mapping camera (MC) and panoramic camera (PC) photographic passes for a specific mission (i.e., specific groundtracks) to Descartes (Apollo 16), for specific missions to potential Apollo 17 sites such as Alphonsus, Proclus, Gassendi, Davy, and Tycho, and for a potential Apollo orbit-only mission with a nodal azimuth of 85 deg. Graphs are also included for determining the maximum number of revolutions which can elapse between successive MC and PC passes, for greater than or equal 55% sidelap and rectified contiguity respectively, for nodal azimuths between 5 deg and 85 deg.

Description: To obtain information about in-place lunar rocks and soil, a closeup stereoscopic camera capable of photographing small scale surface features was used at the Apollo 12 landing site on the Ocean of Storms. Fifteen stereoscopic photograph pairs were obtained. The stereoscopic pairs were of excellent quality and showed the in-place lunar material in detail. The photographs were analyzed and the results compared with the results of the Apollo 12 core sample analysis and other investigations. Significant information about the physical composition and genesis of the lunar soil at the Apollo 12 landing site was obtained. The cohesive soil on the Ocean of Storms probably results from repetitive bombardment of basalt flows by meteorites over long periods of time.

Description: The formation of CO2 and H2O in a gold plated antechamber was investigated when a beam of oxygen is introduced. It was found that at room temperature the formation of CO2 and H2O is negligibly small. However, at the top temperature (197 C) which could be achieved with the existing system, both products were formed in significant quantities. Desorption of CO2 and H2O at this temperature is still slow and incomplete which accounts for the delayed response to the beam conditions. Although the catalytic reactions take place already with molecular oxygen, the reactions are significantly enhanced if the oxygen beam is partially dissociated.

Description: Epoxy/glass test specimens representing Scout fourth and fifth stage motor casings were prepared and studied in a test program designed to determine the relative contamination contributed to payload sensors located near the motor casings. The relative contamination detected in the test program was dependent on several factors, including: (1) distance of test specimen to sensor, (2) sensor temperature, (3) geometric position of the sensor (relative to test specimen), (4)test specimen temperature, (5) chemical composition of the test specimen, (6) sensor function, and (7) additional materials (such as adhesive-backed aluminum tape) added to the test specimens. The thermal characteristics and the decomposition and outgassing products were determined. These data were used to better understand the relative contamination data from the remote sensor testing.
