The book first shows the results of system oceanologic studies carried out in the Arctic by the Russian scientists with the use of large ships-floating research institutes. Physics, chemistry, biology and geology of the Arctic Ocean are considered in the interrelation based on the samples taken in the same localities at one and the same time and processed in ship-board laboratories. Many kinds of studies were undertaken for the first time (lithology and geochemistry of sea ice and snow, marine aerosols, sea snow, hydrooptics combined with satellite observations, internal waves, organic carbon cycle and its role in climate variability of the environment, ecosystem
studies, matter and energy fluxes, etc.). The book is intended for the physicists, chemists, biologists, geologists, teachers and all those who are interested in the Arctic problems.
