Description: This book is in commemoration of the composer, educator, conductor and social worker Magnar Åm’s 70th birthday. Right from the start of work as a composer, music as a form of recognition has been central, along with an impulse to disrupt boundaries between established forms and conventions. This has also been a guiding principle behind the contributions to this anthology, where the goal has not only been to honor one individual, but to be a source of new insight. Music and literature are about the creation and dissemination of meaning. In this sense, it is paradoxical to talk about silence as a hallmark of certain art forms. But anyone who reads or listens actively knows that there is more to be gained from art than what lies in the immediate and explicit expression. The voice (in a broad sense) finds its complimentary opposite in silence. The first part of the anthology provides a brief theoretical background for interdisciplinary research into music and literature. The contributions that follow do not view artworks simply as finished products, but as parts of a living practice in which the composer, author, music, text, performer and audience all meet. In the next part, we are drawn into the workshops of composers and musicians who reflect on the music of Magnar Åm, as well as their own in light of this. In the final part, we cross the border between art and other forms of experience, with eudaimonia as a unifying concept: How should one live a complete and meaningful life? This book has been written by researchers in a variety of fields such as literature, music, natural science and outdoor life, as well as practicing artists: composers, musicians and writers. Between research and art, through scientific articles and professional essays, a conversation arises that engenders recognition across fixed boundaries.

Dette har fungert som leietrådar også for bidraga til denne antologien. Målet har ikkje berre vore å lage eit heidersskrift til éin person, men å vere ei kjelde til ny innsikt. Musikk og litteratur handlar om skaping og formidling av meining. Slik sett er det paradoksalt å snakke om stille som eit sentralt kjenneteikn ved desse kunstartane. Men alle som les og lyttar aktivt, veit at det er meir å hente i kunsten enn det som ligg i det umiddelbare og eksplisitte uttrykket. Stemma (i vid tyding) har stilla som si komplementære motsetning. Første hovuddel av antologien gir ein kortfatta teoretisk bakgrunn for ei tverrvitskapleg forsking på musikk og litteratur. Bidraga som følgjer ser ikkje på kunstverka berre som ferdige produkt, men som delar av ein levande praksis, i møtet mellom komponist, forfattar, musikk, tekst, utøvar og mottakar. I neste del blir vi tekne med inn i verkstaden til komponistar og musikarar som kommenterer musikken til Magnar Åm, men også sin eigen i dette lyset. I siste del kryssar vi grensa mellom kunsten og andre erfaringsformer, med eudaimonia som samlande omgrep: Korleis kan ein kan leve eit fullstendig og meiningsfullt liv? Boka er skriven av forskarar frå ulike fagfelt som litteratur, musikk, naturvitskap, friluftsliv, men også av utøvande kunstnarar: komponistar, musikarar og forfattarar. Description: "To pursue the philosophy of music is to contemplate music’s nature, essence, purpose, value, and function in our lives. While the aesthetics of music looks at music’s content, quality, meaning and importance, music philosophy often goes one step further. Ideas about something one perhaps believes is ‘purely aesthetical’ will of course always require consideration in relation to ideas about humanity, the world, politics and religion. In this sense, music aesthetics and music philosophy are two sides of the same coin. Description: Originally developed by the Canadian sociologist Dorothy E. Smith, institutional ethnography is an approach to research that aims to explore and challenge power relations in society. In Norway and the other Nordic countries, the approach is used by researchers in a variety disciplines and professional fields. In Experiences with Institutional Ethnography, we gain insight into several different researchers’ motivation for, experiences with and reflections on delving into and using institutional ethnography in their own research. We gain insight into specific research processes and their attendant methodological approaches, into experiences of using key concepts from institutional ethnography, and into reflections on the researcher's role. Description: 2014 yılında yaz başında (09 Haziran) yaptığımız toplantıya dayanıyor bu kitabın hikâyesi. Toplantıda İstanbul Üniversitesi’nde gönüllülüğü nasıl yaygınlaştıracağımızı tartışmıştık. Hayata geçirebileceğimiz çeşitli uygulamalardan söz etmiş, ancak ne yaparsak yapalım uygulamaların araştırmaya dayanması gerektiğinin altını çizmiştik. Böylelikle Sosyoloji Araştırma Merkezi bünyesinde gerçekleştirdiğimiz “İstanbul Üniversitesi Öğrencilerinin Gönüllülük Algıları, Eğilimleri ve Deneyimleri” araştırması ortaya çıktı. Süreç içerisinde farklı bileşenler eklediğimiz bu araştırma, sonrasında “Üniversitede Gönüllü Olmak” başlığıyla kitaba dönüştü. Ayrıca bu araştırmadan hareketle öğrencilerin gönüllülük konusundaki farkındalıklarını artırmak amacıyla Gönüllü Akademisi (seminer, atölye, film okuması, STK ziyareti vb. etkinliklerden oluşan 10 haftalık bir program) ve Gönüllü Ol İstanbul Platformu (gönüllü olmak isteyenlerle gönüllü arayan STK’ları, projeleri, kampanyaları buluşturmak, eşleştirmek için kurulan İstanbul Üniversitesi öğrencilerine yönelik platform) hayata geçirildi. Elbette araştırma ve uygulamaların tamamı öğrenci arkadaşlarımızla ve hepimizin gönüllü çalışmalarıyla ilerledi. En başından itibaren gönüllülük üzerine yapılan çalışmaların doğasını yitirmemesine özen göstermeye -ne kadar başarabildik bilmiyoruz elbette- gayret ettik. Gerek Gönüllü Akademisine gerekse düzenlediğimiz gönüllülük çalışmalarına 1000’den fazla öğrenci dahil oldu. Bunun yanı sıra Sosyoloji Bölümü bünyesinde Sivil Toplum ve Gönüllülük dersi açıldı ve öğrencilerin ilgi gösterdiği önemli seçmeli derslerden biri hâline geldi. Bunu yine Sosyoloji Bölümü bünyesinde açılan STK ve Sosyal Sorumluluk Yönetimi Tezsiz Yüksek Lisans programı takip etti. Bu program STK alanındaki öncü ve deneyimli isimlerin verdiği dersler üzerine temellendirildi. Daha çok sektörde çalışan profesyonellerin, STK alanında çalışmak isteyenlerin ve gönüllülerin katıldığı bir program olarak hâlen sürdürmekteyiz. Bununla birlikte gönüllülük, STK’lar ve ilgili konularda paneller ve çalıştaylar düzenledik. Son olarak Gençlik ve Spor Bakanlığı için Türkiye Gönüllülük Araştırmasını gerçekleştirdik. Bu çerçevede İstanbul Üniversitesi Edebiyat Fakültesi Sosyoloji Bölümü olarak her düzeyde gönüllülük ve STK’lar alanında çalışma yapmaya, öğrenciler arasında gönüllülüğü yaygınlaştırmaya, STK alanında bilgi ve deneyim paylaşımını sağlamaya ve bu alanda ilişki ve işbirliğini geliştirmeye devam ediyoruz. Bu kitabın hazırlayıcı adımlarından biri ise 18 Nisan 2018’de İstanbul Üniversitesi’nde düzenlediğimiz “Üniversitelerde Gönüllülük Dersi Müfredat Çalıştayı”dır. Akademisyenlerin, STK profesyonellerinin, gönüllülerin, öğrenci kulüplerinden temsilcilerin vb. katıldığı bu çalıştayda üniversitelerde gönüllülük müfredatını katılımcı bir perspektifle ele aldık. Bu çalıştayın katılımcılarının fikirleri elinizdeki çalışmanın biçimlenmesinde önemli bir rol oynadı. Çalıştay raporu hazırlandı, ancak raporu yayımlayamadık. Müfredat çalıştayından sonra üniversitelerde seçmeli ders fikri ve bu ders için hazırlanacak materyaller konusunda yeni adımlar planladık. Ancak farklı gündemler nedeniyle o dönem gerçekleştiremediğimiz bu çalışmaya Yükseköğretim Kurulu Başkanlığının 2020 Nisan ayında üniversitelerde “Gönüllülük Çalışmaları” dersinin seçmeli olarak açılmasına yönelik aldığı kararla yeniden döndük ve kitap çalışmalarımızı hızlandırdık. Bu çalışmanın kapsayıcı ve kuşatıcı olmasına özen göstermemiz ve farklı konuları ele alma arzumuz nedeniyle süreç biraz uzadı, ancak nihayet tamamlandı ve artık karşınızdayız. “Gönüllülük ve Gönüllülerle Birlikte Çalışmak” gönüllülüğü farklı boyutlarıyla ele alarak günümüzde gönüllülükle ilgili çok sayıdaki bağlamı ve kavramı okuyucuya sunma hedefini taşıyor. Ancak her bir bölümün kendi içinde belirdiği haliyle gönüllülüğü farklılaştıran boyutları göz ardı etmiyor. Günümüzde gönüllülüğün ancak tüm boyutları ile ele alındığı takdirde tarihsel ve toplumsal bağlamla ilişki kurmanın mümkün olduğunu iddia ediyor bu kitap. Kitapta birçok başlık yalnız STK yöneticilerine hitap ediyor gibi görünmekle birlikte burada asıl hedef gönüllülük yapacak kişileri bilgilendirmek, onları gönüllülük faaliyetlerine hazır hale getirmek, STK yöneticilerinin farkındalığını sağlamak ve gönüllülerin gelecekte hayata geçirecekleri kendi gönüllülük girişimlerini daha nitelikli hâle getirmelerine katkıda bulunmaktır. Kitap okuyuculara gönüllülüğün farklı boyutlarını tanıma imkânı sunmaktadır. Kitabın iki boyutu olduğu söylenebilir: Birincisi gönüllülük deneyimi sınırlı olan ya da hiç gönüllü olmamış kişilere gönüllülüğün farklı boyutlarını göstermektir. İkincisi ise kişilerin gönüllülük çalışmaları organize etmeleri, bu yönde inisiyatif almaları durumunda gönüllülerle beraber nasıl çalışabilecekleri konusunda onlara yeni araçlar sağlamaktır. Evrensel boyutları olsa da gönüllülük toplumların kültürel, tarihi, dini, siyasi, ekonomik ve coğrafi birikimine bağlı olarak ortaya çıkar. Bu nedenle kitapta son 50 yıldır yaşanan yeni gelişmelere ve eğilimlere yer verirken Türkiye’nin kendine özgü bir gönüllülük anlayışına ve kültürüne sahip olduğunu unutmadan ilerlemeye çalışıyoruz. Türkiye’nin gönüllülük alanındaki köklü ve zengin birikiminin toplumun inanç ve yaşama kültürüne yaslandığını, gönüllülüğün karşılıksız bir dayanışmayı içerdiğini sıklıkla vurguluyoruz. Diğer taraftan gönüllülüğün farklı boyutlarını tanıtarak eleştirel bir perspektiften tartışmayı, bu tartışmayı derinleştirmeyi ve nitelikli hâle getirmeyi, yeni araştırma ve uygulama odaklarını göstermeyi amaçlıyoruz. Kitabın içerik tasarımında gönüllülük sahasının öncelikli konularına yer vermeyi amaç edindik. Bölümlerin bazıları kuramsal tartışmalara ve yaklaşımlara odaklanırken bir kısmı gönüllülüğün uygulama boyutuyla ilişkilidir. Ayrıca alandaki yeni eğilimlere ve tartışmalı konulara da kitapta bölüm düzeyinde yer verdik. Gönüllülüğün modern dönemde değişen doğasını ve 1970’li yıllar sonrasında gelişen neoliberal bağlamı ihmal etmeden ama güncel gelişmeleri de görmezden gelmeden gönüllülükle ilişkili temel konuları ele almaya çalıştık. Bu yaklaşım tanıyarak tartışmayı ve eleştirel bir perspektif geliştirmeyi içermektedir. Bu nedenle kitapta birbirleriyle çelişkili gibi duran, farklı perspektiflere sahip kavramlara ve yaklaşımlara yer verilmesi alanı tanıtmanın ve eleştirel bir perspektif geliştirmenin öncelikli bir hedef olmasıyla ilgilidir. Giriş dahil on altı farklı bölümden farklı bölümden oluşan kitapta yazarlar arasında ortak bir dil oluşturmaya çalışırken her bir yazarın ve konunun gerektirdiği perspektifi korumaya özen gösterdik. Her bölümün kendi içerisinde farklı konumlanma ve değerlendirmeler ihtiva etmesine imkân tanıdık. Bu nedenle kitabı okurken hem bir bütün hem de birbirinden farklı parçalarla karşı karşıya olduğunuzu hatırdan çıkarmamanızı diliyoruz. Yazarların gönüllülüğe bakışı, gönüllülüğü kavrama biçimleri, alandaki konumlanmaları, uygulama tercihleri vb. hususların bir zenginlik olduğunu düşünüyoruz. Kitabın yayımlanmasından sonra okuyuculardan gelecek geri dönüşler ve yazarların kendi aralarında yapacakları tartışmalar neticesinde hem kitabın mevcut halinin geliştirilmesi mümkün olacak hem de yeni yazarlar ve bölümlerin eklenmesiyle eser genişleyerek okuyucusuna yeni perspektifler sunmaya devam edecektir.

Description: This anthology deals with co-singing (Norwegian: samsang) in different life stages and various settings in a Scandinavian context. Co-singing forms an essential part of our shared cultural heritage. Co-singing involves all forms of singing-activities in which people coexist, and characterizes in various ways human companionship throughout the course of life, from cradle to grave. From a critical analytical perspective, the research in this anthology sheds light on several themes related to the importance and value of co-singing practice in terms of sensemaking and experiencing coherence in life. This involves musical, physical, psychological, emotional, cognitive, ethical, cultural, and social factors. The research project examines for instance the position of singing activities in Norwegian kindergartens and schools, co-singing and health-related topics, co-singing from a gender perspective, co-singing from a multicultural perspective, co-singing activities in light of motivation and coping, and also low-threshold, flexible daily life singing activities for persons with dementia and their relatives. Choir singing in various life stages, from childhood to age of retirement, are also explored in several chapters. With its broadly arranged and pluralistic approach, this anthology provides a multi-faceted contribution to the development of knowledge in the research field of music associated with the power and legitimacy of co-singing at the individual, group, and societal levels. The contributing authors have their practical and scientific experience from higher music education within the fields of music pedagogy, music performance, music therapy, music and health, and also from other types of cultural and musical practices.

Description: Aud Korbøl’s «The critical phase. Immigration to Norway from Pakistan» from 1973 is a pioneering work in Norwegian migration research and was published for the first time in book form in 2018. The analyses are based on statistical material and extensive fieldwork among the first Pakistani labour migrants who came to Norway in the early 1970s. The book gives an insight into the Norwegian society at the time, the Pakistani society in which the labour migrants left, the struggle to find work and housing, and how the Pakistani family and kinship system influenced the migrants’ adaptation process in Norway. The title alludes to the fact that the period Korbøl describes was a critical phase for the Norwegian authorities, for the Pakistani migrant workers, and for Korbøl herself. Yet, the title also suggests that movement across national borders has costs for individuals' personal, social, and cultural identities. The critical phase is thus an inextricable feature of the migration process and just as relevant today.

Description: "In recent years, organizations and authorities in Norway have put a critical spotlight on parenting practices among non-Western immigrants, based on a concern for young people's autonomy and self-determination. The purpose of this book – which deals with parenting and social control in immigrant families from Pakistan, Somalia and Sri Lanka – is to shed light on on this collision between different family norms and practices from different perspectives, and thus help to understand why family relations and social control have become a topic of contention in today's multicultural Norway. The books starting point is a sociological perspective on cultural differences, social control and change in a migration context. A key point of focus in the empirical analyzes are parental restrictions in young people's social life. How common are such restrictions within different groups? What significance do factors such as religiosity and socio-economic resources play in the exercise of social control? And what are the consequences for children's social participation, mental health and well-being? One aim is to contribute systematic quantitative knowledge on such issues. At the same time, the book contributes to a more qualitative understanding of people’s experiences and actions. How do parents from countries like Pakistan, Somalia and Sri Lanka experience raising children and young people in Norway? What concerns have they had regarding their children’s encounters with various parts of Norwegian society? And how do young people navigate between different expectations and demands from the families and communities on the one hand and among their peers and the larger society on the other? We focus on the question of social change. Is the organization of family relationships and the exercise of social control within immigrant populations characterized by continuity or change? Og hvordan navigerer ungdom mellom ulike forventninger og krav fra familie og storsamfunn? Sosial endring står sentralt. Er familierelasjoner og utøvelse av sosial kontroll innad i innvandrerbefolkningen preget av kontinuitet eller endring? Hva slags mekanismer kan eventuelt bidra til å drive endringer framover? Og i forlengelsen av dette – hvordan kan forskning og offentlig debatt bidra på en konstruktivt måte? Description: This anthology presents research projects that examine the intersection between music, technology and education from a variety of perspectives. The contributors are from a range of educational programs within traditional pre-, primary and lower secondary school education, as well as music performance and technology educational programs. Data for the studies stems from primary and lower secondary school, as well as informal learning environments, in addition to the contributors’ respective education programs. The research projects examine a wide range of topics such as gamification of ukulele and song teaching, composition with iPads in the classroom, live looping as an approach to ensemble conducting, authentic music technology learning spaces, music-making in the “laptop-era”, sound, the notion of net-based presence, and challenges in higher electronic music education. As this anthology is the first publication in the MusPed:Research series, it also contains an introductory chapter about the series and the research network Musikkpedagogikk i utdanning (MiU). This anthology makes a distinct contribution to the research field of music technology in education and questions educational practices in the school and higher educational levels, the goals and content of music education, and our understanding of music and music creation in itself.

Forfatterne i antologien kommer fra ulike utdanningsprogrammer, der både tradisjonelle barnehagelærer- og grunnskolelærerutdanninger så vel som faglærer-, utøvende musikk- og musikkteknologiutdanninger er representert. Prosjektene henter datamateriale fra de respektive utdanningene, men også fra musikkfaget i grunnskolen samt fra mer uformelle læringsarenaer. Description: Music plays an important role in many religions and in a variety of religious contexts. Music and Religion: Texts on Music in Religion and Religion in Music takes a look at the intersections between music and religion. We experience religion in music, and in religion we encounter musical expression. Although music and religion are unquestionably mutually pervasive, we can also come across gaps between them: Is it possible to move beyond a musical experience toward a religious one without having to hop over this gap? And is there any direct route from religion into music as an acoustic phenomenon? Without a religious interpretation of the music remaining? There is a wealth of research about music and religion, but little on how they meet. That is what this anthology seeks to remedy. Music and Religion will be relevant for anyone with an interest in encounters between these two phenomena. It will be especially relevant for students in performing, composing and scientific music education, as well as theology and religious studies.
