    Beschreibung: On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the University of Hamburg's main building, a ceremony was held on May 13th, 2011. The keynote speaker was Heinz-Elmar Tenorth, Professor of Historical Education in Berlin. Heinz Rieter and Rainer Nicolaysen awarded two lecture hall names, the socio-economic economist Eduard Heimann (1889-1967)(Lecture Hall H) and the lawyer Albrecht Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1874-1936) (Lecture Hall K). Thus, the programme for naming the seven lecture halls of the University's main building after outstanding scientists who were expelled from the Nazi regime came to an end.Detailed information on all names of the lecture hall can be found in the anthology 〈a href="http://hup.sub.uni-hamburg.de/purl/HamburgUP_Nicolaysen_Hauptgebaeude"〉The main building of the University of Hamburg as a place of remembrance〈/a〉, which was published on the occasion of the anniversary.

    Beschreibung: The publication entitled "Vergangenheit, die nicht vergeht. Das Gedächtnis der Shoah in Frankreich seit 1945 im Medium Film" (A past, that doesn't pass. Holocaust Memory in France since 1945 in the Media Film) explores the basic transformations of the Holocaust-memory in France on the basis of French fiction films that are to be identified as part of cinematography of the Holocaust. The chosen approach that can be described as a history of memory referring to models of collective memory in cultural science studies. The aim is to specify the change of collective memory at the level of the particular filmic narratives and - by doing so - to identify and to analyze the long term development and ruptures in the French culture of remembrance since 1945. The empiric part of this study is preceded by methodological reflections that on the one hand permit a clear and differentiating application of the terms used in the current cultural studies of collective memory. On the other hand this chapter should help to conceive the material of research "Fiction Film" as primal source for historical science. The investigation is divided into five chronological parts and involves altogether a sample of 50 films into the general study before electing cases for deeper analyses.
    Beschreibung: Das Publikationsvorhaben mit dem Titel "Vergangenheit, die nicht vergeht. Das Gedächtnis der Shoah in Frankreich seit 1945 im Medium Film" erforscht anhand französischer Spielfilme - die als Teil einer Kinematografie der Shoah ausgemacht werden können - die grundlegenden Transformationen des Gedächtnisses der Shoah am Beispiel Frankreich. Mit einem gedächtnisgeschichtlichen Ansatz, der sich an den kulturwissenschaftlichen Modellen des kollektiven Gedächtnisses orientiert, konkretisiert die Arbeit den Wandel des Gedächtnisses anhand der jeweiligen filmischen Narrative und verfolgt auf diese Weise Langzeitentwicklungen und Brüche in der französischen Erinnerungskultur zwischen 1945 und heute. Dem empirischen Arbeitsteil sind theoretische und methodische Überlegungen vorgeschaltet, die einerseits einen eindeutigen und differenzierten Zugriff auf das Begriffsrepertoire der aktuellen kulturwissenschaftlichen Gedächtnisforschung erlauben und zugleich das Untersuchungsmaterial "Spielfilm" als Primärquelle der Geschichtswissenschaft fassbar bzw. bearbeitbar machen. Die Untersuchung gliedert sich in fünf chronologisch gereihte Abschnitte und bezieht insgesamt ein Corpus von 50 Filmen in die allgemeine Fragenstellung ein, bevor nach dem Prinzip des Fallbeispiels einzelne Filme einer genaueren Analyse unterzogen werden.

In its methodological approach and in the specific outcome achieved, we can recognize elements of continuity with Leonardo’s thinking and contribute to a territorialist reflection on its current relevance.

    Beschreibung: The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017.     Beschreibung: The volume Contro Bernardino. Processi al maestro Amedeo Landi is the result of the discovery of unpublished documentation on the trials - only partly known - against the abacus master Amedeo Landi, who taught the Milanese merchants at the Broletto. This is an exceptional case not only because only one witness to the activity of the Milanese inquisitorial court in the Middle Ages (whose documentation has been entirely lost) was known until now, but also because of the role of the ecclesiastical court and its officials. The wealth of information and themes has prompted a team effort by the professors of the Department of Historical Studies to clarify the many aspects (political, religious, economic, documentary) of an event that shows the vitality of 15th-century Milan, in which the protagonist, the teacher Amedeo Landi, in an attempt to protect his students, clashes with the most important preacher of his time, Brother Bernardino of Siena, whose canonisation process is temporarily blocked precisely to shed light on the Milanese episode.

Processi al maestro Amedeo Landi nasce dal ritrovamento di documentazione inedita riguardo ai processi – solo in parte noti – contro il maestro d’abaco Amedeo Landi che insegnava ai mercanti milanesi presso il Broletto. Si tratta di un caso eccezionale non solo perché finora si conosceva un solo testimone dell’attività del tribunale inquisitoriale milanese nel medioevo (la cui documentazione è andata interamente perduta), ma anche per il ruolo del tribunale ecclesiastico e dei suoi funzionari. La ricchezza delle informazioni e dei temi ha suggerito un lavoro d’équipe dei docenti del Dipartimento di studi storici per chiarire i molteplici aspetti (politici, religiosi, economici, documentari) di una vicenda che mostra la vitalità della Milano quattrocentesca, in cui il protagonista, il maestro Amedeo Landi, nel tentativo di tutelare i suoi studenti si scontra con il più importante predicatore del suo tempo, frate Bernardino da Siena, il cui processo di canonizzazione viene momentaneamente bloccato proprio per fare luce sull’episodio milanese.

    Beschreibung: The art of printing with movable type made its appearance in Perugia -then as now, the heart of Italy- in 1471, when the city was under the sway of Braccio Baglioni. Perugia was home to an important university which had been attracting students from all over Europe for more than a century. They found hospitality in two colleges, of which the ‘Sapienza Vecchia’, in particular, was accustomed to accommodating students from abroad. The colleges were themselves instrumental in assisting the work of the earliest printers, all of them foreigners; their enterprise flourished for about fifteen years before strong competition from larger printing centres, notably Venice, took control of the Perugian book market. A second phase in local book production started at the turn of the century under the aegis of two major players, the Cartolari family and Bianchino dal Leone. The history of the book in Perugia is characterized by a quality and originality which is not reflected in the modest quantities produced there, and the major bibliographers have always taken an interest in it. All that and more can be found in this book, the outcome of lengthy research based on detailed analysis of all known editions and archival documents, including a number of new discoveries.

Hat der aus der Trennung von Recht und Moral entspringende Rechtspositivismus doch zu der These geführt, daß das Recht – rein rechtlich betrachtet – zu nichts verpflichte. Das widerspricht allerdings den vorherrschenden sozialen Anschauungen. Sie verlangen folglich nach einer Begründung für den dem Recht zugeschriebenen Anspruch verbindlicher Maßgeblichkeit. Demgemäß ranken sich um die Idee solcher Normativität des Rechts Vorstellungen, Bilder und Begriffe, die eine innere Bindung durch Recht plausibel zu machen suchen. Es wird gezeigt, daß sich diese Konnotationen der Idee der Rechtsverbindlichkeit auf drei Grundfiguren zurückführen lassen, die der Grammatik der persönlichen Fürwörter korrespondieren.Der Autor ist Professor für Öffentliches Recht, Rechts- und Staatsphilosophie an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

Dazu reisten Musterungskommissare in die Garnisonsorte und begutachteten die Truppen. Neben ihren Amtsgeschäften widmeten die Kommissare sich oftmals intensiv "touristischen" Vergnügungen. Die Berichte geben in niederländischer Sprache daher nicht nur Einblicke in das Musterungswesen selbst, sondern vor allem in das Reisen im 18. Jahrhundert. Dabei lassen sie in deutlicher Form das soziale Leben der Zeit nachvollziehen.

    Beschreibung: Dieser Sammelband setzt sich mit den Deutschlandbildern in Belgien bis zum Beginn der deutschen Okkupation im Jahre 1940 auseinander. Betrachtet werden diese aus Sicht unterschiedlicher Geisteswissenschaften wie Philosophie, Literatur, Geschichte, Kunstgeschichte und Musikwissenschaft. Die traditionellen Topoi der deutschen Imagologie, die überall in Europa eine große Resonanz gefunden haben (das romantische Deutschland, das Land der Dichter und Denker, aber ab dem Krieg von 1870 auch das preußische Feindbild), werden dabei in Betracht gezogen. Konstitutiv für den Prozess der Identitätsbildung in Belgien bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg war die deutsch-germanische Komponente, die in der Metapher der sog. âme belge als Kultursynthese zum Ausdruck kam. Der Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs hat hier besonders traumatisch gewirkt, was zur Folge hatte, dass diese partielle „Zugehörigkeit“ Belgiens zur deutschen Kultursphäre drastisch neuevaluiert wurde, unabhängig von der Schaffung eines deutschsprachigen Gebiets in Belgien durch den Versailler Vertrag.

The research results presented in this book speak for the fact that the Iijoki series is a significant source material for future research, for example from the point of view of oral history, language variation, metalanguage, swearing and the reader’s reception. The possibilities for future research seem to be quite plentiful.

    Beschreibung: The article analyses the morphological means used by the Slovenian dialects of Friuli in adapting loan verbs to their aspectual system in comparison to the traditional means of expressing verbal aspect in the indigenous Slavic lexicon. In relation to verbs of Slavic origin, the formation of aspectual pairs was mainly realised by means of prefixation to the base verb (thereby perfectivising it), whereas with loans from the adjacent Romance varieties (Friulian, Italian, Venetian) suffixation proves more productive (yielding imperfectivisation). The analysis is carried out on the dialect of Resia as well as those from the Torre and Natisone Valleys. Despite some differences, in all three dialects there is generally a strong tendency to integrate loan verbs into the aspectual systems of these varieties. Biaspectual verbs, on the other hand, are relatively rare except for the particular case of the verbs in -inat in Resian.

    Beschreibung: In the monography Auf die Tour, I analyze the participation of Jews in popular culture in Vienna, Budapest and New York. I argue that entertainment in vaudevilles was shaped between the perception of difference and similarity, between human trafficking, covert prostitution, anti-Semitism and nationalism. Ultimately, my research shows how a space for Jewish-non-Jewish people was created in the coinciding of the mass migration movement and the emerging mass culture between the Habsburg Monarchy and the United States.
    Beschreibung: Auf die Tour berichtet von der Teilhabe von Jüdinnen und Juden an der populären Kultur in Wien, Budapest und New York. Zwischen Differenzwahrnehmungen und Ähnlichkeitsdenken, zwischen Menschenhandel, verdeckter Prostitution, Antisemitismus und Nationalismus gestaltete sich Unterhaltung in Varietés. Meine Forschung zeigt, wie sich ein Raum für jüdisch-nichtjüdische Begegnungen in der Massenmigrationsbewegung und der entstehenden Massenkultur zwischen der Habsburgermonarchie und den Vereinigten Staaten ergab.

    Beschreibung: The dissertation analyses dream images in romanticist art, with regards to inherent dreamanalogue strategies in consideration of contemporary dream theory and aesthetics, with a focus on the period between 1820 and 1840. The study does not provide a typological, iconographical or motif-historical collection of samples, but analyses different aspects of selected artworks which represent a wide range in terms of their contextual, formal and topographical heterogeneity, and overcomes the existing stereotypical classification in the context of romanticist art reflection. The study identifies that, beyond the contextual-iconographical dimension, the dream serves as an aesthetical category because it is reflected not only as a motif but also in relation to its dramaturgy. In the romantic awareness of the difficulty of an adequate representation of invisible images, the nonlinear, associative, ciphered, space- and time-simultaneous structure of the dream is adapted as a method, and is staged by varied and differentiated configurations. This is mirrored by comprehensive or formal concepts (genre, technique, media and interdisciplinary), as well as in fragmentary structures (sketches and drawings), in materiality (transparency and colour) or arabesque and combinatory production principles. The study contains three chapters: after a general introduction to the subject, the analysis of the current state of research and the demonstration of the methodology in the first chapter, the second chapter focuses on contemporary dream discourses (especially the theories of Gotthilf Heinrich Schubert and Carl Gustav Carus) and the constitutive role of the philosophy of Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling. By also involving the literary concepts of dreams the romantic awareness of the deficiency of the visible image compared to the invisible, which forces an avoidance of a mimetic art perception, becomes obvious. The third chapter forms the main body of the study. On the basis of selected dream images it analyses the different artistic strategies and conditions of reception. The first section of the third chapter focuses on artist dream imagery, namely the Musician’s Dream by Caspar David Friedrich, Raphael’s Dream by Franz and Johannes Riepenhausen and the Dream of Erwin von Steinbach by Moritz von Schwind. The analysis indicates that the dreaming artist serves as mise-en-abyme of the dream-analogue productive and reflexive process, and the artwork itself. The second section of chapter three makes landscape spaces accessible as imaginative concepts and projections of emotional states, according to current literature studies. Landscape spaces serve as patterns for reflection processes, which is explored on the basis of The Dreamer by Caspar David Friedrich. The third section of the third chapter focuses on a combinatory and arabesque concept as a dream-analogue and self-reflexive strategy – the collage-like compilation, association and transformation of heterogeneous elements which are analysed on the basis of the artworks Dream of Adam by Moritz von Schwind and The Evening by Clemens Brentano.
    Beschreibung: Die Arbeit untersucht Bildstrategien von Traumdarstellungen der deutschen Romantik unter Berücksichtigung der zeitgenössischen Traumtheorie und Ästhetik mit einer Fokussierung auf den Zeitraum zwischen 1820 und 1840. Die Studie geht der Frage nach, ob die Traumdarstellung jenseits ihrer ikonographischen Dimension auch als ästhetisches Konzept fungiert, indem die Dramaturgie des Traumes als Methode eingesetzt wird. Die romantische Präferenz für das Unbewusste – gerade auch hinsichtlich der Kunstproduktion – zeigt sich in der Auseinandersetzung mit der philosophisch-literarischen Frühromantik und kulminiert in einer Ästhetik der inneren Bilder.     Beschreibung: The story of how Max Warburg became head of the family-owned bankhouse, although his brother was supposed to take over the business, was often told: When he was 12 years old, the one year older Aby offered Max his birthright for the promise to buy all the books Aby would ever need. Max accepted,and - as he later said - issued "the biggest blank cheque in my life". The paths of life of the two brothers spilt into different directions. Aby built his library into a research institute. Max developed M. M. Warburg & Co., thus the bankhouse becoming one of the most important private banks in Germany. At Simultaneously, they both pursued another goal: the foundation of the university. The brothers were among the early donors of the Hamburg Scientific Foundation (Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung). It was all about "Hamburg's mental capacity" ("Hamburgs geistige Zahlungsfähigkeit").

    Beschreibung: Although invoicing is of great importance in practice, there is no fundamental treatment of its effects in the area of ​​application of the Code of Obligations in the Swiss civil law literature. The present study entitled "Invoicing in the Swiss Code of Obligations" aims to close this gap. In it, the author primarily discusses the consequences of invoicing for the origin, scope, due date and limitation of claims and how the invoicing affects the default of the debtor. The thesis is also devoted to the legal consequences of additional declarations by the biller, which are frequently encountered in practice, and sheds light on the legal status of the recipient of the bill.
    Beschreibung: Obschon die Rechnungsstellung in der Praxis von grosser Bedeutung ist, findet sich in der schweizerischen Zivilrechtsliteratur keine grundlegende Abhandlung über deren Wirkungen im Anwendungsbereich des Obligationenrechts. Diese Lücke will die vorliegende Untersuchung mit dem Titel «Die Rechnungsstellung im schweizerischen Obligationenrecht» schliessen. Der Autor erörtert darin vornehmlich, welche Konsequenzen die Rechnungsstellung für die Entstehung, den Umfang, die Fälligkeit und die Verjährung von Forderungen zeitigt und wie sich die Rechnungsstellung auf den Schuldnerverzug auswirkt. Weiter widmet sich die Arbeit den Rechtsfolgen von in der Praxis häufig anzutreffenden Zusatzerklärungen des Rechnungsstellers und beleuchtet die Rechtsstellung des Rechnungsadressaten.

Tutt’ora inediti, questi documenti sono qui riletti alla luce di un dettaglio: la presenza, tra una pagina e l’altra, della grafia di Marie-Anne Paulze-Lavoisier (1758-1836), moglie e collaboratrice del celebre chimico francese. È in effetti lei, ben più di altri assistenti, a compilare questo grande “archivio dell’esperimento”, per poi conservarlo (senza mai smettere di maneggiarlo) nei quattro decenni che seguirono la morte del marito nel 1794. Un lavoro che lei stessa assimilava con orgoglio a quello di un «segretario». Questo libro ricuce insieme queste storie, aprendo nuove prospettive tra storia materiale della scienza, storia sociale e storia delle donne e di genere.

    Beschreibung: The liberal professions are subject to an ever changing legal basis and thus constantly undergo minor or major amendments. A fundamental innovation in the current law governing the liberal professions of tax consultants is the authorization to work as in-house tax consultants. Since 2008, the Tax Consultancy Act has made possible to pursue the profession of in-house tax advisor, while lawyers were allowed to work in-house for decades already, with the last amendment of the legal regulations from 2016. This paper deals with the various legal and practical implications of the interactions between the freelance activity as a tax consultant and the activity of in-house tax consultants in an employment relationship. A detailed comparison of the legal basis for tax consultants with that of in-house lawyers is of special interest in light of the current ambiguous legal situation. Special focus is a thorough analysis of the legal question whether or not an in-house tax adviser can be exempted from the obligatory pension insurance.

Forschungsreisen entlang der Küsten von Libyen, Italien und Malta verbinden sich zu einem einzigartig dichten Blick auf die Zwänge und Handlungslogiken der Akteure im Grenzraum. Auf der Spur der Flüchtlinge von Süden nach Norden werden die Lage der Migrantinnen in Libyen, die Grenzschutzagentur Frontex und die Verhältnisse auf See sowie schließlich Haftzentren und andere Grenzeinrichtungen in den Ankunftsorten Malta und Süditalien illustriert und auf die europäische Politik rückbezogen. Eine intensive Perspektive auf einen umstrittenen Teil der europäischen Außenpolitik.

Der Essay »Soziales Klima« durchmisst das Feld der Sozialen Nachhaltigkeit mit den Mitteln einer ganzheitlichen, an Hegel und Parsons informierten Soziologie. Der Vorschlag ist der menschenrechtsbasierte Garantismus, eine vierte Formation neben Liberalismus, Sozialismus und Konservatismus.

    Beschreibung: Während Klimaforschung lange als rein naturwissenschaftliches Unterfangen galt, wird sie zunehmend auch in den Sozialwissenschaften betrieben. Die Popularisierung in und außerhalb der Wissenschaft hat dabei nicht nur zu neuen Problembezügen geführt, sondern auch eine wachsende Unübersichtlichkeit produziert: Es ist ein Bedarf entstanden, disziplinäre Einstiegspunkte, interdisziplinäre Anschlussmöglichkeiten und transdisziplinäre Austauschgelegenheiten zu sondieren. Die Beiträge des Bandes thematisieren zentrale Schlüsselwerke der sozialwissenschaftlichen Klimaforschung und ermöglichen so einen ersten und orientierenden Zugang zu diesem Forschungsfeld.

    Beschreibung: Anhand der Feldpost von 30 miteinander bekannten Mitgliedern einer Hamburger Turnerriege soll die Frage beantwortet werden, weshalb bürgerliche Soldaten im Ersten Weltkrieg eine relativ positive Einstellung gegenüber ihrem Militärdienst zeigten. Nach einer Analyse ihrer Militär- und Kriegserfahrungen stellt sich heraus, welche Aspekte des Kriegsdienstes mit bürgerlichen Werthaltungen vereinbar waren und dass daraus überwiegend eine gesellschaftliche Pflicht zum treuen Dienen abgeleitet wurde. Gleichzeitig werden jedoch auch die Fälle herausgearbeitet, in denen bürgerliche Soldaten eine Berechtigung zur Verweigerung empfanden.

The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences.

Wer hat diesen Prozess forciert? Diesen Fragen geht Daniela Neumann durch eine Verknüpfung von Diskurs-, Hegemonie- und Gouvernementalitätstheorie auf den Grund. Anhand der Analyse politisch-medialer Diskurse legt sie den gesellschaftlichen Wandel im Umgang mit Freiwilligenarbeit seit den 1980er Jahren offen und beleuchtet die Deutungs- und Institutionalisierungskämpfe zwischen verschiedenen Interessengruppen. Es zeigt sich: Die Herausbildung einer staatlichen Engagementpolitik war keinesfalls zwangsläufig.

    Beschreibung: The increased detection of doping in professional sports has led to a strengthening of the discussion on the legal aspects of doping. So far criminal and/ or verbandsrechtliche questions were the focus. For example the question of whether and how sponsorship contracts may be terminated in cases of misconduct of the sponsored. First, it examines how appropriate cancellation clauses could be like. Second, consider the conditions under which, even without explicit rules for doping a termination in accordance with general principles of contract law is concerned. It also discusses the legal consequences of termination, and in particular its relationship to other contractual consequences of doping, such as claims for damages or penalties.

    Beschreibung: Neben der Biblia pauperum ist das Speculum humanae salvationis das wohl bekannteste typologische Werk des Mittelalters. Vom lateinischen Text sind 328 handschriftliche mittelalterliche Quellen überliefert. Von seiner Popularität zeugen überdies Übersetzungen ins Deutsche, Französische, Niederländische, Englische und Tschechische. Diese Arbeit stellt eine der beiden niederländischen Fassungen des Speculum, und zwar die Prosaübersetzung aus dem Jahre 1464, in den Mittelpunkt. Neben Struktur und Funktion des lateinischen Textes werden in einem chronologisch-thematisch organisierten status quaestionis die Accessusfragen nach Herkunft und Autorschaft des Speculum erörtert. Vom mittelniederländischen Prosa-Spieghel werden eine genaue kodikologische Beschreibung und eine breit angelegte Analyse der Sprache geboten. Auch der literaturhistorische Kontext und die Übersetzungs- und Bearbeitungstechnik werden eingehen behandelt. Die kritische Edition nach der Haarlemer Handschrift erfüllt ein altes Forschungsdesiderat, indem sie sowohl den Vergleich mit der bereits vor mehr als einem halben Jahrhundert herausgegebenen Versübertragung ermöglicht, als auch eine eminent wichtige Schnittstelle zwischen handschriftlicher und gedruckter Tradition in den Niederlanden für die Forschung zugänglich macht.

    Beschreibung: At various junctures in the contemporary age, the relationship between Russia and the West has occupied a crucial place in the debates of Russian intellectual and political elites about the peculiar path and historical destiny of their country, constituting at the same time an important factor in Europe’s cultural self-definition, geohistorical contours, security system. The outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war has invested a question that had already become “classic” with a renewed, urgent topicality. The essays collected in the volume range over the time span from the final decades of the Tsarist Empire to the present day, focusing on topics such as Nikolai Danilevsky’s influential reflection on Rossiia i Evropa (A. Venturi), Max Weber’s analysis of Russian constitutionalism in 1905-07 (F. Fera), the pro-Westerner elements in Russian nationalism at the beginning of the twentieth century (G. Savino), the contribution of Russian emigration to the conceptualization of the West/East cleavage in the interwar period (R. Gravina), the Soviet Union in the vision of A.J. Toynbee (T. Tagliaferri), the “Ukrainian question” between the 20th and 21st centuries (R. Valle), the competition over the post-Soviet space between the Russian Federation and the European Union (M. Puleri). In the introduction, G. Cigliano dwells on the recent aspects of the relationship between Russia, Europe and the West which seem more suitable for interpreting the roots of the ongoing conflict in a historical-historiographical perspective.

I contributi specialistici raccolti nel volume spaziano lungo l’arco temporale che dai decenni finali dell’Impero zarista giunge ai giorni nostri, focalizzandosi su argomenti quali l’influente riflessione di Nikolaj Danilevskij su Rossija i Evropa (A. Venturi), l’analisi weberiana del costituzionalismo russo nel 1905-07 (F. Fera), gli elementi occidentalisti nel nazionalismo russo di inizio Novecento (G. Savino), l’apporto dell’emigrazione russa alla riflessione su Occidente/Oriente nel periodo interbellico (R. Gravina), l’Unione Sovietica nella visione di A.J. Toynbee (T.     Beschreibung: The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences.

Tässä kirjassa annetaan myös tietoa Suomen jätevedenpuhdistuksen historian monista vaiheista keskittyen Helsinkiin sekä perehdytään siihen, mitä vesi merkitsi ja miten siihen suhtauduttiin eri aikoina. Kirjassa perehdytään muun muassa Vantaanjoen ristiriitaiseen, mutta keskeiseen rooliin sekä viemärinä että raakavesilähteenä, saastumattoman ja riittävän raakavesivesilähteen löytämiseksi tehtyihin varhaisiin pohjavesitutkimuksiin, ulosteongelman ratkaisuun sekä Päijänteen ottamiseen raakavesilähteeksi. Teos taustoittaa viemäröinnin ja jätevesienpuhdistuksen historiaa koko Euroopan mittakaavassa tuhansien vuosien takaa. Erityisesti perehdytään Suomessa tehtyihin ratkaisuihin ja syvällisemmin Helsingin viemäröinnin varhaisiin vaiheisiin ja jätevedenpuhdistuksen alkutaipaleeseen. Keskeiseksi nousevat kysymykset, mitä toimia toteutettiin kun tavoitteeksi otettiin vesistöjen puhdistuminen, miten nämä toimenpiteet ovat vaikuttaneet asukkaiden elämään ja ympäristön tilaan. Lisäksi pohditaan mitkä ovat tulevaisuuden haasteet vesihuollon ammattilaisten näkökulmasta katsottuna.
