    Description: «With absolute honesty»: this is how Natalia Ginzburg worked in her editorial job at the Einaudi publishing house. Through documents from the Einaudi Archives in Turin and the Archivio del Novecento (Sapienza University), this book traces Ginzburg's editorial work in the postwar period, when she had major editorial responsibility and coordinated the translation of Proust’s Recherche. The correspondences with authors and translators restore a new profile of the writer, bringing to light the relevance of her intervention in narrative series, such as “Coralli” and “Gettoni”; the interaction between the professions of writer, editor and translator, from which recurring elements of poetics emerge; and the issues involved in being the only woman to have a decision-making role in the Einaudi editorial staff of the time.

    Description: This chapter focuses on Obrazy Italii, the best known work by Pavel Muratov, a Russian writer, journalist, critic and art historian. This work is a diary recounting the journey to Italy of the author at the beginning of the twentieth century; nowadays it is considered a classic text that provides a testimony on the way Italian art was perceived in Russia. Though it is well-known in Russia, this work has only recently received some attention in Italy following its recent translation. This chapter contains detailed and original analyses that compare Muratov’s translations with those found in Russian dictionaries written in the same period. These concern a selection of lemmas in art and architecture and the names of artists. This chapter shows that the language employed in this work cannot be defined as either specialised or standard, but as a mixture between the two.

    Description: The Vocabulario de Términos de Arte (Vocabulary of Art Terms) is the most important lexicographic work about art history published in Spain in the 19th century. Following his intention to spread knowledge about the lexis of art, José Ramón Mélida published this work after translating and adapting for the Spanish audience Jules Adeline’s Lexique des terms d’art (Lexicon of art terms). This chapter employs descriptive-contrastive methodologies to analyse Mélida’s translation strategies, his interventions on the source text as well as neologisms.

    Description: This chapter focuses on the German translations of La Vita of Raffaello by Vasari. Ballestracci focuses her attention on translations into German of the word «disegno», on its complex and multifaceted meanings and its crucial role in Vasari’s work. After presenting all the occurrences of the word forms from the lemma «disegn-», Ballestracci analyses the instances in which «disegn-» was not translated directly as «Zeichnung» in two different target texts. Results of this study confirm the fascinating hypothesis by which the translations of a polysemous term cause the surfacing of meanings in the target text that were hidden in the source text and that, in this particular case, carry key aspects of Vasari’s thought.

    Description: The history of reflection on language is characterized by a singular ambiguity. For centuries, it has been carried on as if the existence of language and the cognitive-narrative capacities which derive from it were independently considered from the function that, on the other hand, founds and characterizes it, namely listening. We believe that the reason for this strangeness lies in the fact that there is no possible discourse on listening that does not lead to a discourse on the body, especially focusing on the body discourse of one's mother and her voice. On the contrary, this contribution aims to show that, in order to understand our history as talking and storytelling animals, it is important to reconstruct the specific journey that - in the course of both our phylogenesis and ontogenesis - the ear makes. It is, in fact, an organ already active in utero and on which, during our evolution, depends on both the emergence of the articulate voice and the bipedalism as well, as the posture par excellence of narration.

    Description: The shift between the first and second half of the twentieth century marked a watershed. It represented the “sunset of modernity” and made tradition unattainable, thereby calling into question the very survival of poetry. This collection focuses on the work of Giuseppe Ungaretti as poet, translator, and critic, which took the lead from this fracture. As the essays gathered here show, this fracture took a specific shape in Ungaretti’s work, which was reviewed in distinct ways and had a lasting impact up to the present day, alongside twentieth-century history and poetry. The book thus offers a multifaceted picture aimed at assessing albeit provisionally the later Ungaretti’s writings and his legacy for future generations of writers.

    Description: This chapter takes into consideration two Russian translations of the Vita of Cimabue. One of these presents a selection from Le Vite de’ più eccellenti pittori, scultori, e architettori by Giorgio Vasari and is dated 1933; the other is the first complete Russian translation of Vasari’s Vite published between 1956 and 1971. The comparison of these two translations focuses on morphological, lexical and syntactical aspects of the original version. Particular attention is devoted to the translation of inter-phrasal and intra-phrasal connectors, of the coniunctio relativa and of gerunds. The chapter also reflects on the translation of Latin inscriptions, toponyms and proper nouns.

    Description: It was 1987 when Alma Sabatini, following the request of the National Commission for Equality and equal Opportunities between women and men, established by the Presidency of the Council of Ministries, published The indications for a non-sexist use of the Italian language. Over thirty years after that publication, the topic has kept its relevance intact, becoming the keystone for reading and interpreting gender issues and policies. Starting from this context, the universities of Florence and Udine proposed a reflection on the relationship between gender and language, bringing the topic back to the center of the scientific debate, but free from media aspects which it often appears to be imbued with in public opinion and that, sometimes, end up undermining the true value of the relationship.

    Description: As a sign, tangible heritage is the most visible trace of the past in our daily life. In constant dialectic with the intangible heritage, it constitutes a physical presence that forces us to take concrete awareness. Knowledge of texts and stories, which for Vitruvius is the high road for the design and construction of a building, is also fundamental in the processes of deconstruction, according to the various stages and different perceptions, through ages and customs, up to retrace the process that transformed it into 'heritage'. The lexicon and the terminology of cultural heritage are in this sense the most important vector of knowledge, enhancement and dissemination. The volume seeks to bring together those who study the language of heritage, from different countries and through different methodologies, and those involved in its management, in order to offer points of view and ideas on the narration and perception of tangible and intangible heritage, in mediation across eras, cultures and identities.

    Description: Acta Slavica Estonica is an international series of publications on current issues of Russian and other Slavic languages, literatures and cultures. The volume „Anthropocentrism in language and speech” was prepared in memory of Mikhail Shelyakin (1927–2011), a long-time professor of the Russian language at the University of Tartu. The relation between language and the human being was M. Shelyakin’s central topic during the final period of his research. The articles focus on anthropocentrism of the linguistic sign and its realization in speech. They continue and develop the problems studied by M. Shelyakin mainly on the basis of Russian. The volume consists of three parts: anthropocentrism in word-formation and grammar, anthropocentrism in phraseology and the lexical system, and the impact of anthropocentrism on contrastive studies, translation, and the teaching of foreign languages.

    Description: With this article, we introduce our project for enlarging the Italian-Russian parallel corpus of the NKRJa (Nacional’nyj korpus russkogo jazyka) and outline several of its current and future applications. The newly expanded corpus has now reached roughly four million words, and we expect to reach 20 million, the size required for a corpus that is balanced and reliable. In order to illustrate possible applications for the Italian-Russian parallel corpus, we offer two examples: the first is its experimental use in the teaching of translation at the University of Bologna; the second its use in the context of research in Russian-Italian Contrastive Linguistics on the topic of the non-temporal qualities of the Russian future tense.

    Description: Giovan Girolamo Carli, a Sienese scholar (1719-1786), focused on the language of the Letters, usually considered a secondary aspect compared to their historical and theological value. Probably pushed by an anonimous client, Carli was planning to publish the first critical edition of the Letters, strictly philological, supported by insights on the life of the Blessed and a dictionary. His manuscript drafts, even incomplete, are however a precious source for reconstructing the original documents tradition, since he directly consulted and compared different and authoritative copies. Carli's purpose was to celebrate a fellow citizen, but also to prove the Sienese linguistic primacy instead of the Florentine one – as in art historiography –, and propose an authentic style against the contemporary mediocrity.

    Description: The literary essay Treblinskij ad (The Hell of Treblinka), written by Vasilij Grossman and first published in the journal Znamja in 1944, circulated widely at the end of World War II, with editions appearing in several different languages. This article examines how Treblinskij ad spread across Europe and the United States during the Nuremberg Trials. We focus on the English, French, and German translations of the text that appeared between 1945 and 1947, and compare these translations with the versions of Grossman’s essay that were published in Russia.

Jacqueline Risset (1936-2014) was a translator from French (Ponge, Sollers, the Tel Quel poets) and Italian (Dante, Machiavelli, Balestrini), as well as a well-known scholar for her work on Scève, Proust and Bataille. The aim of this volume is to analyse Risset’s poetic work, from the beginnings with textual writing in the experimentalism of Tel Quel, through a trajectory that, crossing Dante and Stilnovism through the translation of the Divine Comedy, led the author to the elaboration of a poetics centred on “privileged instants” that open “to the elsewhere”.

    Description: This study’s aim is to deepen and enhance the linguistic dimension in Pier Paolo Pasolini's work, in the hope of restoring to his figure all the fullness of his intense and visceral relationship with the entire universe of languages. In the first part of the work we will investigate the various moments of Pasolini’s reflection on different expressive codes, from dialect to the language of cinema, from the 'Language of Reality' to the technological neo-Italian, promptly counterposed by the author’s linguistic experimentation. From here a broad lexical investigation starts - this study being the subject of the second part of this volume – with the aim of highlighting the author’s contribution to contemporary Italian (as to this day many 'keywords' from Pasolini’s universe still echo in Italian language, from «nuovo Potere» to «Palazzo», from «omologazione» to «mutazione antropologica»), thus confirming, once again, the inseparable relationship between reflection and language creativity, giving birth to a new, unique portrait of Pasolini as a 'linguist' and at the same time as an 'onomaturgist'.

    Description: Studies in Syntactics. The purpose of this book is to explore the structure of the text as such using a metalanguage derived from quantitative poetics. Grigori Utgof’s thesis is that texts should be studied statistically. The main problems addressed in his research are the problem of successivity on the formal (syntactic) plane of artistic texts, and the problem of syntactic dissimilarity. Largely prompted by Yuri Tynianov’s famous statement – „The unity of the work is not a closed, symmetrical intactness, but an unfolding, dynamic integrity. Between its elements is not the static sign of equality and addition, but the dynamic sign of correlation and integration. The form of the literary work must be recognized as a dynamic phenomenon“ (The Problem of Verse Language; translated by Michael Sosa and Brent Harvey) – Grigori Utgof demonstrates the inherent nonidentity of the intratextual order, and proceeds to the problem of measuring some translated texts’ dissimilarities. In particular, his book is an inquiry into the structure of the following eight texts: Приглашение на казнь / Invitation to a Beheading by Vladimir Nabokov, and the novel’s Estonian translation Kutse tapalavale [Invitation to the Block] by Rein Saluri; “За гремучую доблесть грядущих веков...” by Osip Mandel’shtam, and two translations of this poem into English: “In the Name of the Higher Tribes of the Future” by Robert Lowell and “For the Sake of the Resonant Valor of Ages to Come…” by Vladimir Nabokov; “Облако в штанах” (“Cloud in Trousers”) by Vladimir Mayakovsky; “Ballada [Ballade]” by Czesław Miłosz in Natalya Gorbanevskaya’s translation (“Баллада”).

This volume is devoted to the interrelations of the prominent Estonian writer Jaan Kross (1920–2007) with Russian literature and culture. It includes contributions on the poetics of some of Kross' works ("The Czar's Madman", "Professor Martens' Departure", "Michelson's Matriculation", "The Third Range of Hills", "A Hard Night for Dr. Karell") and his translations from Russian (e.g. D. Samoilov's poetry and A. Griboedov's "The Misfortune of Being Clever"). Contributors include Lea Pild, Ljubov Kisseljova, Timur Guzairov, Tatiana Stepanischeva, Dmitry Ivanov, and Maria Tamm. An appendix includes the original Russian text of the autobiography of Johann Köler, the patriarch of Estonian national art and protagonist of one of Kross' novels. So far, this text has appeared only in fragments; the full version was found in the Archive of the Institute of Russian literature in St. Petersburg and is here published, with an extensive commentary, for the first time.
