Description: Starting from the fen (low moor) genesis according to ecohydrological View it has been examined, whether and how fen can be rewetted for renaturation or regeneration. There are no experiments or researches about that. Therefore it is necessary to look back to the traditional experiences and knowledges of the irrigation in agriculture for grass-plain (cultivation of meadows). For that it has to be distinguished between submersion irrigation, flooding irrigation, flooding from ditches, border irrigation, and contour ditch irrigation; qualification and condition are specified in table 2.

Description: Von den lakustrinen Karbonathorizonten der Lauterecken-Schichten sind die Odenbach Flöz-Bank (OFB) und die Medard-Bank (MBK,) geeignete Leithorizonte.
Description: Abstract: Lacustrine carbonate horizons of the Lauterecken-Schichten, the “Odenbach Flöz-Bank” (OFB) and the “Medard-Bank” (MBK), can be used as stratigraphic marker levels for the Lower Permian ofthe “Nahe-Mulde”. Detailed mapping shows distribution and lateral facies development of the horizons. The use of the new discribed "Wiesweiler-Bank” (WIB) for stratigraphic correlation is limited by the small distribution. The following items are representative for the different carbonate horizons: The “Odenbach Flöz-Bank” is characterised by stromatolites, algal remains and irregular bedding. The high fossil content includes fish (Paramblypterus, Acanthodes, Xenacanthids), ostracods, conchostracs and bivalves. Pyrite in high content and the dark greyish-black coloration, respectively bluish-black weathering color are also characteristic. The associated coal is a further feature. The ochre-yellow weathering color and steady lamination are typical specifications of the Medard-Bank in the working terrain. Their high bitumen content and the consolidation by dolomitization are remarkable. Plantremains (Calamites, Cordaites, Pecopteris) are dominant. Fish (Paramblypterus, Acanthodes, Xenacanthids), conchostracs and ostracods are less often than in the OFB. The Wiesweiler-Bank shows constant lamination, reddish-brown weathering color and a noteable lower carbon content than the OFB or MBK. Though containing some fish remains (Acanthodes, Paramblypterus), few conchostracs, ostracods, bivalves and plant axis; fossil remains are generally rare. Thus are stromatolites. Only atonelocality algalremains, calamite stems and plant debris are documented.

Description: Abstract: The lowermost Rotliegend of the Saar-Nahe basin comprises two major facies. One, the southwestern marginal facies, can be subdivided only in a preliminary fashion and is restricted to the Lebach region. (The northwestern margin of the basin along the southern Hunsrück faultwas probably not partofthedepositional setting.) The other, called the“normal facies”, can be traced through most of the basin and can be divided into several units: - Remigiusberg Formation (up to 130 m thick). Their lower boundary is defined by the onset of a continuous red coloration or a conglomerate, respectively. Local marker horizons include the Jungenwald Conglomerate close to the base of the section, the Dirmingen Conglomerate (accompanied by the Dirmingen Tuff and Lochmühle Tuff) at mid-section, and the “Remigiusberger Leitkonglomerat” near the top of the section. - Altenglan Formation (up to 210 m thick). Their lower boundary is defined by the onset of grey argillaceous to fine-grained arenaceous sediments. Main marker horizons include the relatively closely spaced “Hauptkalk” Limestone and the Reckweilerhof Limestone, along with the Reckweilerhof Tuff, in the lower part ot the section and the Hirschfeld Coal in the upper part. - Wahnwegen Formation (up to 230 m thick). Their lower boundary is fixed at the onset of sedimentation ofmedium to coarsegrained sandstones, contrary to previous usage. Marker horizons for lateral correlation over greater distances (such as the “Grenzkonglomerat” and “"Basis-Konglomerat”) are lacking. The locally developed Wetschert Tuff is important for correlation with the undifferentiated marginal facies. - Quirnbach Formation (up to 350 m thick). Their lower boundary is defined by the onset of grey argillaceous to fine-grained arenaceous sediments, and their upper boundary is fixed at the base of the Feist Conglomerate. Several geographically restricted marker horizons can be distinguished, including the Immetshausen Black Shale and an unnamed black shale in the middle of the section and, in the upper part of the section, the lower, middle, and upper GalgenbergBlack Shale, the Breitwiesen Tuff, theHohenöllen Black Shale, theBlochersberg Black Shale and the Gailbach Black Shale. The causes of the cyclic sedimentation are discussed on the basis of the sequence from the Remigiusberg Formation to the Quirnbach Formation. Multiple factors probably influenced the process of sedimentation but the individual factors cannot be distinguished unambiguously.

Description: Am Lago Argentino (Südpatagonien) wurden Moore entdeckt.
Description: At the Lago Argentino (South Patagonia) mires have been discovered. Plant associations have been examined. Macrofossil investigations produce the subfossil paludification. Mire are colonized by fine sedge associations. In the past there was the same peat forming vegetation. In addition there are spring pools with mosses. Both plant associations remind of the holarctic vegetation.

Description: This work is a contribution to general tidal research and specially to the investigation of ocean tide models in the area of South Scandinavia. The relatively well known crust - mantel structures in the region of Denmark enable the interpretation of observed ocean load effects with regard to view of different ocean tide models. Earth tide measurements were carried out with two ASKANIA gravimeters and one LaCoste & Romberg Earth tide gravimeter at seven different stations in Denmark. The load effect of the main tidal wave M2 is between 0.75 μgal and 1.40 μgal, with 52° to 87° phase; highest amplitudes were observed in Southwest Jutland. The effect is decreasing to north and east with larger distance to the German Bight. In addition to the Earth tide analysis, the recordings were investigated with regard to non-linear influences, due to tidal water level changes in the coastal area, and to loading effects during storms and windfields. For the coastal stations Varde and M0gelt0nder no significant higher harmonicals of the main tidal waves were found. But the spectral investigation of the record at M0gelt0nder shows a periodical signal of 3 hours and 15 minutes. The theoretical load effect was calculated according to the method of FARRELL (1972). Before the model calculations, the influence of the chosen earthmodel and the modelled regional and local geology was investigated. The effect due to changes in the earthmodel or to the structure of the crust to the theoretical load effect is very small with about 5 %. For reviewing the ocean tide models, the theoretical load effects of the models from Schwiderski, Mathisen, Flather and the German Hydrographical Institute (DHI) were calculated and compared with the observed load effects. It was shown that for the adaption, modification and extension of ocean tide models, the conservation of water, moved by tides, playes a decisive role. Corresponding to the regional question the massconservation of the adapted ocean tide models were realized as normalisation to Schwiderski’s model for the North Sea. This produces an increased agreement of the theoretical and the observed load effect. The model calculations confirm especially the ocean tide model of the DHI. The extension of the model for the Skagerrak, Kattegat, Belt Sea and South Baltic Sea and the refined gridstructure of the North Sea coast leads to further improvement of correlation between theoretical and observed load effects. This model is described in chapter 6.4.6 and reproduced in the appendix (chapter 13.6) in the format applied by Schwiderski. The ocean tide model can be used for load calculations in South Scandinavia and for correction of geodetical precise measuremants. The interpretation of the results was carried out in order to find out the requirements of possible improvements for the ocean tide model (M2) of the German Bight and the East North Sea. On the one side the method for the adjustment of the rest vectors between the stations was used, on the other side 150 model calculations were carried out by varying the amplitudes and phases of the ocean tide models for the mentioned sea areas. The adjustement leads with constant model phases to increased amplitudes in the German Bight and decreased amplitudes in the East North Sea. The sum of the restvector differences between the stations was reduced from 0.5 μgal to 0.2 μgal. But the systematical variation of the amplitudes and phases for the ocean tide models of the German Bight, the East North Sea and the coastal area at the North Sea leads to a reduced mean restvector amplitude from 0.22 pgal to 0.15 pgal with increased model phases (East North Sea and Shelf Area +20°, German Bight +10°) and decreased amplitudes (East North Sea -5 cm, Shelf Area -20 cm and German Bight -10 cm). These results can be used as boundary conditions of oceanographical considerations for the improvement of ocean tide models.

Description: Abstract: The distribution of the basaltic rocks within the region of the Pfahlberg was mapped geologically. The different rock types are described in detail. The geomagnetical investigation of the basaltic knob is illustrated by seven cross-sections. By support of the geomagnetics the results of the geological mapping are verified. It was also possible to prove the continuation of the basalt below the younger cover of loess and pumice. The genesis of the Pfahlberg is discussed. Probably the basalt is especially flown out as a lava river. Partly it is intruded dikelike between its tuff and the devonian basement.

Description / Table of Contents: A brash ice jam in the South Channel of the St. Clair River was profiled in February 1987 using a helicopter-borne short-pulse radar operating in the UHF band near 500 MHz. During the same time, measurements of the brash ice depth and water temperature were made from a Coast Guard icebreaker. The returned radar pulses consisted of a strong coherent reflection from the water surface, preceded (and followed) by incoherent returns from the brash ice. The measured waveform time delays were then converted to mean freeboard height of the brash ice pieces above the water surface. Given the mean freeboard height, an estimate of the total brash ice thickness was made. This estimate was greater than the range of the direct shipboard measurements. The difference is believed due to differences between ice porosity above and below the water line, to melting within the ice and to partial submergence of some of the surface pieces. It is concluded that this technique could be used for mapping relative brash ice depth if the complexities of automating waveform analysis could be overcome.

Description / Table of Contents: The physical characteristics of blue ice ablation areas in Antarctica are described and some representative ablation rates are given. The possibilities for using blue-ice areas as airfields are outlined and exploratory surveys are mentioned. Site details are given for icefields at Mount Howe, Mill Glacier, Patriot Hills, Rosser Ridge, Mount Lechner, S1 near Casey station, and on the Ross Ice Shelf near McMurdo station. The surface roughness of blue ice is discussed, microrelief surveys are presented for Mount Howe and Patriot Hills, and spectral analyses are used to develop relations between bump height and wavelength. U.S. military specifications for the roughness limits of various types of runways are summarized and graphical comparisons are made with the roughness analyses for Mount Howe and Patriot Hills. Special machines for smoothing ice runways are discussed and design specifications are developed. Some notes on ground facilities and ground transport are included. Appendices give discussions of weather patterns in the Transantarctic Mountains and methodology for making spectral analyses of surface roughness. It is concluded that glacier-ice airfields for conventional transport aircraft can be developed at low cost in Antarctica. Recommendations for further work are offered.

Description / Table of Contents: This book contains papers presented at a joint meeting of the Metamorphic Studies Group and IGCP Project 235 (Metamorphism and Geodynamics) held at University College Dublin in September 1987. Recent developments in the methods and application of geothermometry and geobarometry, relative thermobarometry and in textural and isotopic dating of metamorphic events are reviewed. New thermal and tectonic models for metamorphism in different tectonic settings are presented. Case studies make up a substantial part of the book, many in the form of short summary papers that describe P-T-t paths for specific field areas from different tectonic settings world-wide. The broad range of topics covered reflects the multidisciplinary character of research on the thermal evolution of metamorphic belts - an area that is opening up an exciting interface between petrology, geochronology and tectonics.

Description / Table of Contents: In early fall 1984, a questionnaire was sent to over 325 general aviation airports in cold regions. The results from over 200 responses were compiled and evaluated and over 20 airport managers were contacted for additional details. Site visits were made to 36 airports to obtain additional information. The most common pavement problems identified in the study were associated with non-traffic-related phenomena and include 1) pre-existing cracks reflecting through asphalt concrete overlays (in two years less), 2) thermal cracking, and 3) longitudinal cracking (at a construction joint). Most of the airports experienced 1) water pumping up through cracks and joints in the pavements during spring thaw, or 2) additional roughness due to differential frost heave in the winter, or both problems. Many airport managers reported that debris was generated at cracks during the winter and spring. Many pavement problems can be traced to the evolutionary history of general aviation airports and the lack of consideration for site drainage. Based on the recognition of these problems, several future research programs are identified.

Description / Table of Contents: This study provides a detailed chemical and structural profile of first-year and multiyear Arctic sea ice. Ice cores were collected during April- May 1986 and 1987 near Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. Concentrations of Cl, Br, SO4, Na, Ca, K, Mg, PO4, SiO4, NO3, NO2 and NH4 were determined for samples chosen on the basis of structural ice type. Chemical and statistical analyses indicate that finer-grained structures incorporate more impurities and that major ion chemistry is controlled almost entirely by salinity. Mg is enriched in the ice indicating precipitation is occurring at temperatures higher than previously reported. K is depleted in the ice suggesting preferrential drainage. Ratios of the major ions are the same for first-year and multiyear ice and are similar to that of seawater indicating that as the ice ages no significant changes occur in ice chemistry. Nutrient concentrations in the ice are enriched with respect to the underlying water, indicating that biological activity occurs in the ice and processes other than the overall salinity effect and brine drainage are affecting nutrient concentrations within the ice.

Description / Table of Contents: Recent efforts to improve airborne electromagnetic induction- measurement technology and to downsize the related helicopter-towed antenna assembly from about 7.5 m long to about 3.5 m long for use in airborne measurement of sea ice thickness are discussed, as are the results from arctic field testing. Also outlined are the system noise and drift problems encountered during arctic field evaluation, problems that adversely affected the quality of the sounding data. The sea ice sounding results indicate that it should be possible to determine thickness to within 5% for ice floes with moderate relief but that, because of sounding footprint size and current model algorithm constraints, steepsided pressure ridge keels cannot be well defined. The findings also indicate that routine sea ice thickness profiling from an airborne platform is close at hand with further system improvement, as is the apparent capability to determine the conductivity of the sea ice, from which an assessment of sea ice strength can be made.

Description / Table of Contents: "This report provides a summary of the present state of knowledge concerning contaminants in northern Canada. This knowledge base was the subject of a scientific evaluation meeting held in Ottawa, February 28-March 2, 1989. Approximately 50 scientists representing a broad spectrum of interests attended the meeting including a representative of each of the other seven circumpolar countries. An integrated ecosystem approach was taken to assess the contaminants issue which considered all aspects of the problem from sources to transport, freshwater, terrestrial and marine systems, human exposure through diets, and finally implications to human health"--Foreword

Description / Table of Contents: The greatest wilderness on earth, the circumpolar Arctic has for centuries stirred our imagination and challenged us to explore its vast lands and seas. The Arctic World captures the spirit of this most northerly frontier - the majesty of its landscapes, the beauty of its plants and animals, the remarkable history of its peoples. Encompassing the northern reaches of seven countries and an area of 28 million square miles, the Arctic is, in fact, one natural realm where plants, animals and humans have learned to live in a hostile climate. Its expanses of land and water, however, are not always the barren tracts of popular myth. There are towering mountain ranges, the largest forest in the world, spectacular displays of flowers in the spring, and -a rich variety of sea and land birds and mammals. Its people range from the Inuit of the Canadian Arctic, Greenland and Alaska to the Lapps of Scandinavia and the Chukchi of Siberia. The Arctic World offers an exciting visual journey through this immense land. The 130 color and 100 black and white photographs, taken in each of the polar countries by renowned photographers, range from breathtaking scenery to intimate portraits of people at work and at play. Those depicting traditional ways of life that have all but disappeared from the modern Arctic are important visual records of the unique heritage of northern peoples. Old engravings and early photographs of arctic explorers, whalers and native men and women provide a historical perspective. The fascinating story of the adaptation of man, plants and animals to the arctic environment is told by six polar experts from around the world. They focus on the history of the Arctic from the ice ages to the present, the impact of European exploration, the astonishing variety of arctic flora and fauna, and the future of the Arctic in the face of twentieth-century technology.

Description / Table of Contents: The effects of runner material and surface conditions on the friction between runners and ice were studied. A model sled was pushed over a 6-m-long ice sheet and the reduction of speed of the sliding sled was measured. The friction calculated by the reduction of speed between two gates indicated that smooth runners showed lower friction at around -1°C than at around -10°C, as expected, but the friction of rough runners showed little temperature dependence. The lower thermally conductive runners showed lower friction than higher thermally conductive smooth runners as the theory predicted, but such effects were obscured on rougher runners.

Description / Table of Contents: This textbook focuses on the physics and chemistry of the Earth's upper atmosphere, which is bounded at the bottom by a pressure level at which most of the incoming ionizing radiation has been absorbed, and bounded at the top by the level at which the escape of gas becomes important. The plan of the book is to identify the multitude of processes that operate in the upper atmosphere, and to relate them to observed phenomena by detailed mathematical and physical descriptions of the governing processes. Basic information from many disciplines such as radiation physics and chemistry, fluid dynamics, optics, and spectroscopy is skilfully marshalled to give a coherent account of the upper atmosphere. This book is outstanding as an introduction to the primary literature and current problems for students of physics or chemistry. The text is supported by numerous diagrams, bibliography and index
