    Description: Infrastructures of Freedom sheds light on the impact of inadequate public lighting in self-built communities in Cape Town. In democratic South Africa, where infrastructure provision still reflects deeply embedded notions of citizenship, informal neighborhoods with minimal infrastructure provision face challenges beyond access to basic services and opportunities. Fear, the feeling of being forgotten, and living in undignified conditions are among the powerful experiences darkness brings about in these neighborhoods. The book not only reveals these experiences of everynight life, but takes a step further: it considers how the co-production of a solar public lighting project within a community improved everynight life and suggests ways for infrastructure to more successfully articulate citizenship.

The contributions examine the contrast between genre theory and practice, the interplay of genre interference and intertextuality, and the tension between convention and innovation. The focus is on the relationship of post-Augustan epic poetry to the earlier tradition, i.e. to authoritative predecessors such as Homer, Virgil and Ovid. The self-positioning of later poets in relation to the canon often goes hand in hand with an endeavour to reconfigure traditional elements: By omitting, varying or exaggerating aspects typical of the genre, their works enter into a dialogue with the earlier epics, permanently subverting the audience's horizons of expectation. The integration of non-genre discourses plays a central role here: modern literary concepts for analysing genre interference are critically evaluated in the anthology and incorporated into the interpretation in a reflective manner. The methodological range and innovative approaches in this volume make an important contribution to deepening and expanding the current state of research.

The prevalence of mood, anxiety, substance use and other psychiatric disorders among adolescents is high. However, medical professionals are not sufficiently trained about adolescent psychiatric disorders. Primary care providers correctly identify less than a fourth of youth with a depressive or anxiety disorder and many clinicians underestimate the importance of the problem of adolescent psychiatric illnesses and suicidal behavior.     Description: In welcher Weise und in welchem Maß haben die Ergebnisse des Newtonschen Experiments der Farbbrechung Einfluss auf die Bildende Kunst des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts genommen? Diese Fragen stehen im Zentrum der Beiträge, welche die Malpraxis, die Theoriebildung zur Farbe, die neuen graphischen Reproduktionstechniken, die steigende Sehkompetenz, die Materialität von Farbe, die Verfeinerung der Darstellungsdetails und die Rolle optischer Instrumente untersuchen. Die Irritation im 18. Jahrhundert entstand aus der nicht eindeutigen Trennung in Licht- und Pigmentfarben. Für die Künstler hatte die alte Farbtrias - Blau, Rot, Gelb - weiterhin Bestand. Nichtsdestotrotz ist eine Verfeinerung des Sehens zu konstatieren, wie zunehmende Differenzierungskompetenz, die nicht nur neue graphische Techniken hervorbrachte, die im 19. Jahrhundert zur Fotographie führen sollten, sondern auch die Ästhetisierung verstärkte.     Description: The present sixth volume of the new historic-critical complete edition of Eduard Hanslick´s works contains texts of the years 1862 to 1863, which are for the most part contributions from the Vienna "Presse". Some articles were published shortly after in national music journals such as the "Niederrheinische Musik-Zeitung" or the Berlin music journal "Echo". Hanslick revised som of them later for his well-known anthologies ("Die moderne Oper", aus dem Konzertsaal. Geschichte des Konzertwesens in Wien, II2). As before these texts were provided with lists of variant readings, which are printed subsequent to the respective article. The principles of publication were not changed. Minor variations are: different spelling, change from spaced writing to normal distance of characters or vice versa, smaller modification of the wording, updating or additions. Major changes mainly consist in leaving out large parts of the text or rearranging text passages from different sources to particular subjects. The fundamental change in Hanslick´s occupation as a critic as can be seen exactly from the 1860s, that is his stronger attention to reviewing the performance cannot be substantiated by his own editions so well because he often left out parts related to the concert. From that point of view this edition provides not only a better survey of the Vienna concert life in these years than Hanslick´s own edition but it also notes down in a much more precise way his changed approach to writing. Most of the texts, however, are completely unknown today. The main essay in the comment part deals with the music-aesthetic consequences of the phenomenon of boredom, the typical syndrome of the 19th century, which Hanslick´s reviews shed some light on. It becomes clear that there are more criteria in Hanslick that are important for an assessment of a work than those laid down in "Vom Musikalisch-Schönen". An important position in Hanslick´s life as a music critik take his trips to music festivals or world expositions. His travel diaries are still very informative and shown an open-minded cosmopolitan. Hanslick´s report on the bustle of the 1862 word exposition in London from an initially neutral attitude of an observer seems in a certain way to turn into a surrealistic inferno of the arising modern age and confirms unconsciously what Walter Benjamin realized first and formulated in his "Passagenwerk". This matter is dealt with a particular length in the notes, which as before briefly characterize, annotate or analyse for its aesthetic relevance every single text. Added to the annotations is an excerpt from a letter by August Wilhelm Ambros, which illustrates some aspects from Hanslick´s aesthetic of boredom from a different point of view.
    Description: Der vorliegende sechste Band der neuen historisch-kritischen Gesamtausgabe der Schriften von Eduard Hanslick enthält Texte der Jahre 1862 bis 1863. Es sind überwiegend Beiträge aus der Wiener "Presse". Manche Artikel erschienen kurz darauf in überregionalen Musikzeitschriften wie der "Niederrheinischen Musik-Zeitung" oder der Berliner-Musikzeitung "Echo". Einen Teil überarbeitete Hanslick später für seine bekannten Sammelbände ("Die moderne Oper", "Aus dem Concertsaal. Geschichte des Concertwesens in Wien, II"). Für diese Texte wurden wie bisher Lesartenverzeichnisse erstellt, die im Anschluss an die jeweiligen Zeitungsartikel abgedruckt sind. Die Editionsprinzipien blieben gleich. Geringfügige Varianten sind: andere Schreibweise, Wechsel von Sperrdruck zu normalem Zeichenabstand oder umgekehrt, kleinere Formulierungsänderungen, Aktualisierungen oder Hinzufügungen. Gravierende Änderungen bestehen hauptsächlich im Wegfall großer Textpartien oder der Neumontage von Textpassagen aus verschiedenen Quellen zu bestimmten Themen. Die grundsätzliche Änderung in Hanslicks Kritikertätigkeit, wie sie gerade ab den 1860-er Jahren festzustellen ist, nämlich seine stärkere Zuwendung zur Leistungskritik, kann man seinen eigenen Editionen nicht so gut belegen, weil er oft aufführungsbezogene Teile weggelassen hat. Insofern gibt diese Ausgabe nicht nur einen besseren Überblick über das Wiener Konzertleben dieser Jahre als Hanslicks eigene Edition, sondern verzeichnet viel genauer seine geänderte Schreibhaltung. Die meisten Texte jedoch sind heute gänzlich unbekannt. Der Hauptessay im Kommentarteil beschäftigt sich mit den musikästhetischen Konsequenzen aus dem Phänomen der Langeweile, dem typischen Krankheitsbild des 19. Jahrhunderts, zu dem Hanslicks Kritiken manche Erhellung bringen. Es wird deutlich, dass es bei Hanslick noch andere wichtige Kriterien für eine Werkbewertung gilbt als die in "Vom Musikalisch-Schönen" festgelegten. Eine wichtige Stellung in Hanslicks Leben als Musikkritiker nehmen seine Reisen zu Musikfesten oder zu Weltausstellungen ein. Seine Reiseberichte sind immer noch sehr informativ und zeigen einen weltoffenen Kosmopoliten. Hanslicks Referat über den Betrieb auf der Londoner Weltausstellung 1862 aus einer zunächst neutralen Beobachterhaltung gerät zu einem surrealistisch anmutenden Inferno der aufkommenden Moderne und bestätigt unbewußt Erkenntnisse, die Walter Benjamin zuerst in seinem "Passagenwerk" formulierte. Dies wird in den Erläuterungen, die wie bisher knapp die einzelnen Texte charakterisieren, kommentieren oder auf ästhetische Relevanz in befragen, besonders ausführlich behandelt. Dem Kommentarteil ist ein Auszug aus einem Brief von August Wilhelm Ambros beigefügt, der einige Sachverhalte aus Hanslicks Ästhetik der Langeweile aus einer anderen Perspektive beleuchtet.     Description: acques Derrida’s extensive early writings devoted considerable attention to “being as presence,” the reality underlying the history of metaphysics. In Derrida on Being as Presence: Questions and Quests, David A. White develops the intricate conceptual structure of this notion by close exegetical readings drawn from these writings. White discusses cardinal concepts in Derrida’s revamping of theoretical considerations pertaining to language–signification, context, negation, iterability–as these considerations depend on the structure of being as presence and also as they ground “deconstructive” reading. White’s appraisal raises questions invoking a range of problems. He deploys these questions in conjunction with thematically related quests that arise given Derrida’s conviction that the history of metaphysics, as variations on being as presence, has concealed and skewed vital elements of reality. White inflects this critical apparatus concerning being as presence with texts drawn from that history–e.g., by Plato, Aristotle, Bacon, Hume, Kant, Whitehead. The essay concludes with a speculative ensemble of provisional categories, or zones of specificity. Implementing these categories will ground the possibility that philosophy in general and metaphysics in particular can be pursued in ways which acknowledge the relevance of Derrida’s thought when integrated with the philosophical enterprise as traditionally understood.

Der Band zeichnet zudem die Druckgeschichte nach und bietet Lesetexte der Novelle und des Dramas nach dem Erstdruck bzw. der Erstausgabe. Versehen werden die Texte mit Kommentaren zu kulturhistorischen Kontexten, Austriazismen und veralteten, zum Teil fremdsprachlichen Ausdrücken. Die historisch-kritische Ausgabe bietet eine wissenschaftlich fundierte Grundlage für eine Auseinandersetzung mit dem Werk Arthur Schnitzlers.

    Description: In the monography Auf die Tour, I analyze the participation of Jews in popular culture in Vienna, Budapest and New York. I argue that entertainment in vaudevilles was shaped between the perception of difference and similarity, between human trafficking, covert prostitution, anti-Semitism and nationalism. Ultimately, my research shows how a space for Jewish-non-Jewish people was created in the coinciding of the mass migration movement and the emerging mass culture between the Habsburg Monarchy and the United States.

    Description: This synchronic study presents a new onomasiological, frame-theoretical model for the description, classification and theoretical analysis of the cross-linguistic content category aspectuality. It deals specifically with those pieces of information, which, in their interplay, constitute the aspectual value of states of affairs. The focus is on Romance Languages, although the model can be applied just as well to other languages, in that it is underpinned by a principle grounded in a fundamental cognitive ability: the delimitation principle. Unlike traditional approaches, which generally have a semasiological orientation and strictly adhere to a semantic differentiation between grammatical aspect and lexical aspect (Aktionsart), this study makes no such differentiation and understands these as merely different formal realisations of one and the same content category: aspectuality.

Mohammed ben Abdelkrim el Khattabi alias Abdelkrim schaffte es, die zerstrittenen Rifkabylen zu vereinen und aus der Widerstandsbewegung gegen die spanischen Invasoren die 1923 proklamierte "Rif-Republik" erwachsen zu lassen. Dirk Sasse geht den deutschen, britischen und französischen Helfern Abdelkrims nach – Ärzten, Technikern usw. –, die zu einer schleichenden Verlängerung des Krieges beitrugen, aber auch bei der vorgesehenen Modernisierung des Landes mithelfen sollten. Sein Buch ist ein Beitrag zur Geschichte der Dekolonisation und zur Geschichte der Vernetzung zwischen der außereuropäischen Bevölkerung und antikolonial eingestellten Sympathisanten in Europa.

    Description: In Arabic and Islamic studies, the subject of variance in general and that of textual variation in particular has not been investigated exhaustively so far. In the present book the variation in texts of the “closed transmission” will be studied, focusing on a small corpus of didactic and model poems, with a view to establishing what degree of text stability and change was allowed by the medium manuscript. Categories of variance (relating to work-titles, text, number of verses and their sequence, page-layout, context) and the means of controlling them in the manuscripts of the poems are identified and detailed descriptions of the copies are given. The monograph also includes a presentation of some major traits of the cultural background to the study of Arabic didactic poetry and of its dissemination in which memorization has played a crucial role. The intended readers,editors and other users of manuscripts, are helped to acquaint themselves with the methods employed in the manuscripts to control variation and they are given an overview of the large spectrum of Arabic didactic poetry and of its place in the traditional culture of learning in Islamicate societies.

    Description: Following Levita’s statement, the Masorah transmitted by medieval illuminated manuscripts was generally considered as less significant for the study of the biblical and masoretical knowledge in the Jewish world. The biblical codices produced in Ashkenaz were considerably disregarded compared to Spanish codices. Challenging this assertion, this work engages in a reflection on the link between the standard Eastern tradition and the Ashkenazic biblical text-culture of the 13th century. Élodie Attia provides an edition of thirteen cases taken from MS Vat. Ebr. 14, offering the oldest series of Masoretic notes written inside figurative and ornamental designs. Its critical apparatus offers an unprecedented comparison with the oldest Eastern and Ashkenazic sources to evaluate if the scribe paid more attention to aesthetic details than to the textual contents. In an unexpected way, the Masoretic notes of Elijah ha-Naqdan, even written in figurative forms, show a close philological link with the Masorah of the eastern Tiberian sources and prove that the presence of figurative elements neither represents a loss nor a distortion of Masoretic knowledge, but rather illustrates a development in the Masoretic tradition.

    Description: This is the first study to characterize the architectural patronage of Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni (1667-1740), and to identify twelve architects during his half century of patronage in his Ecclesiastical court of the Cancelleria. Most eminent among them were Filippo Juvarra and Domenico Gregorini. Commercial and private theaters in the palace are located from archival data, room measurements, drawings, diary accounts, Correspondence of the French Academy, and palimpsests of architectural details. The size, shape, appearance, capacity, and location of Filippo Juvarra's theater are discussed. Archival documents are cited to reveal why, how, and when it vanished. Detailed analysis is devoted to Juvarra's stage construction with its elaborate sets and moving apparatus. In his official function as Vice-Chancellor of the Church, it is well known that Ottoboni was positioned as a major patron of music, theater, and painting in late Baroque Rome. He was a librettist for oratorios performed by his resident composer, Arcangelo Corelli, and by Alessandro Scarlatti in venues in the palace, and in his basilica of San Lorenzo in Damaso, located in the palace grounds. His resident painters included Francesco Trevisani and Sebastiano Conca. He completed the construction of Bernini's Confessione in the nave of his basilica. As the sponsor of the Arcadian Academy, Ottoboni dictated taste in Roman cultural circles. His involvement in the competition for the façade of St. John Lateran is amplified. A grand overview is provided for the cardinal's commission of devotional machine constructed to rival the Lenten carnivals.     Description: The Constitution of 1 May 1934 saw an attempt made in Austria to create an alternative to parliamentary democracy in the form of an order based on the professional “Stand” (corporation). The failure of this attempt was due to the nature of the “Stand” itself which, as something organically grown, is not accessible to institutionalisation. In reality, the corporation was just a means of enabling conservative thinking, in a much wider sense, to influence politics, a hangover of traditional forms of rule.
    Description: Mit der Verfassung vom 1. Mai 1934 wurde in Österreich versucht, der parlamentarischen Demokratie in Gestalt einer berufsständischen Ordnung eine Alternative entgegenzusetzen. Die Versuche ständischen „Aufbaus“ gingen indes ins Leere, weil der Stand seinem Wesen nach etwas natürlich Gewachsenes, einer Institutionalisierung nicht Zugängliches ist.
