    Description: acques Derrida’s extensive early writings devoted considerable attention to “being as presence,” the reality underlying the history of metaphysics. In Derrida on Being as Presence: Questions and Quests, David A. White develops the intricate conceptual structure of this notion by close exegetical readings drawn from these writings. White discusses cardinal concepts in Derrida’s revamping of theoretical considerations pertaining to language–signification, context, negation, iterability–as these considerations depend on the structure of being as presence and also as they ground “deconstructive” reading. White’s appraisal raises questions invoking a range of problems. He deploys these questions in conjunction with thematically related quests that arise given Derrida’s conviction that the history of metaphysics, as variations on being as presence, has concealed and skewed vital elements of reality. White inflects this critical apparatus concerning being as presence with texts drawn from that history–e.g., by Plato, Aristotle, Bacon, Hume, Kant, Whitehead. The essay concludes with a speculative ensemble of provisional categories, or zones of specificity. Implementing these categories will ground the possibility that philosophy in general and metaphysics in particular can be pursued in ways which acknowledge the relevance of Derrida’s thought when integrated with the philosophical enterprise as traditionally understood.

    Notes: Abstract Acetyl-LDL (Ac-LDL) bound to transformed mouse macrophage J774 cells in a high affinity, saturable and specific manner. When cells were cultured for 24h in the presence of tunicamycin such that incorporation of N-linked sugars into protein but not protein synthesis itself was inhibited significantly, the binding characteristics of Ac-LDL to the cells were unaltered. In this respect the Ac-LDL receptor of J774 cells is similar to the asialoglycoprotein receptor of HepG2 cells.

    Notes: Abstract We have developed a computerized neuromuscular monitoring system (NMMS) using commercially available subsystems, i.e., computer equipment, clinical nerve stimulator, force transducer, and strip-chart recorder. This NMMS was developed for acquisition and analysis of data for research and teaching purposes. Computer analysis of the muscle response to stimulation allows graphic and numeric presentation of the twitch response and calculated ratios. Since the system can store and recall data, research data can be accessed for analysis and graphic presentation. An IBM PC/AT computer is used as the central controller and data processor. The computer controls timing of the nerve stimulator output, initiates data acquisition, and adjusts the paper speed of the strip chart recorder. The data processing functions include establishing control response values (when no neuromuscular blockade is present), displaying force versus time and calculated data graphically and numerically, and storing these data for further analysis. The general purpose nature of the computer and strip chart recording equipment allow modification of the system primarily by changes in software. For example, new patterns of nerve stimulation, such as the posttetanic count, can be programmed into the computer system along with appropriate data display and analysis routines. The NMMS has functioned well in the operating room environment. We have had no episodes of electrocautery interference with the computer functions. The automated features have enhanced the utility of the NMMS. The prime advantages of this system are (1) the ability to customize its features by altering its controlling programs, (2) the ready availability of the hardware and software, (3) the general purpose nature of the system, so that it is not limited to this one application, and (4) the adaptable nature of the system.

    Notes: A theory of the amount of liquid entrained by cylinders upon withdrawal from liquid baths is derived for a wide range of cylinder radii. The theory is based on matching curvatures for static and dynamic menisci. Predicted values are expressed as the effect of the dimensionless wire radius (Goucher number) and dimensionless withdrawal speed (capillary number) on the dimensionless flux.The theory was verified experimentally for all wire radii by removing short cylinders from oily fluids and with other information. The fluids used included kerosene, mineral oil, motor oil, and glycerine, with viscosities from 2 to 500 centipoise; Goucher numbers ranged from 0.05 to 1.2. Deviations, which were noted at high capillary numbers where velocity gradients become appreciable, indicated that the theory is a plug flow or low speed theory. Also discussed are differences found with water and the conditions under which films coalesced into droplets.

    Notes: The speed range of the low-speed theory for cylinder withdrawal is extended by a correction for gravity and a modified use of the thin meniscus assumption. Experimental evidence indicates that this gravity corrected theory holds over a 3,000-fold range of speed, in terms of capillary number. This gravity corrected theory reduces, as special cases, to several other previously published theories as well as to the low-speed theory.

    Notes: Abstract Isozyme variation was investigated in populations ofPhragmites australis (Poaceae) which have recently invaded and taken over marsh habitat of the Mississippi River delta. Infrared aerial photographs in the Garden Island Bay subdelta of the extensiveP. australis populations reveal distinct, clone-like circular patches within a predominant background. Preliminary evidence indicates that the infrared color differences represent distinct morphological types. However, there are no obvious environmental factors that could account for the peculiar patterns.P. australis collections were taken from five separate and distinct “patches” and adjacent “background”. Only two electrophoretic phenotypes were found: one from “patches” and one from the “background”. In comparing the two, 20% of the 40 loci scored are fixed for alternate alleles. These results indicate a clear correspondence of infrared reflectance with electrophoretic phenotype. In addition, the genetic uniformity as evidenced by the discovery of only two electrophoretic phenotypes supports the contention that the recent spread ofP. australis throughout the Mississippi River delta has been primarily, if not exclusively, a result of vegetative propagation.
