    Description: During the 1920s and 1930s the wordless novel – stories told in black-and-white wordless woodcuts – was established as a narrative genre. The genre was most popular in Germany, but was as well known in other parts of Europé and in the US. The wordless novel was characterized by the absence of words, the use of woodcut and other relief printing techniques, as well as themes of social critique and serious existential issues. The purpose of the book is to - through the wordless novels of the 1920s and 30s - explain the uniqueness of the wordless narrative and thus the autonomous narrative possibilities of the image. The method of the examination is a close reading of the German artist Otto Nückel's wordless novel Schicksal (Destiny 1926). A comparative material consists of the Czech artist Helena Bochořáková-Dittrichova's wordless novel Z Mého Dětství (From My Childhood, 1929). Wordlessness is studied through the image's characteristics as an intermediary of messages and narratives and through comparisons with other expressions - the silent film, cirkus, expressionist dance and visual art, as well as medieval woodcuts. Narratives – which are usually put together by verbal communication – are in this project a tool for seeing: the image sequences or the image groups that ""replace"" the words - not as a lack or implied meaning of words, but as a personal visual story.

    Description: Gerard Zerbolt van Zutphen (1367-1398) behoort tot de vroege 'Moderne Devotie'. Zo noemde zich de beweging van 'vernieuwde innigheid' die rond 1375 in Deventer onder inspiratie van Geert Grote en Florens Radewijns ontstond. Zij ontwikkelden een hervormingsprogramma, waarin de geestelijke omvorming van de mens centraal stond. Als broeder van het gemene leven speelde Gerard Zerbolt hierin een prominente rol. Hij gaf leiding aan een intensieve boekproductie, ijverde voor kerkelijke erkenning van de broederschap en maakte zich haar charisma eigen. Zo schreef hij twee toonaangevende handboeken voor de geestelijke weg. Meer dan Grote en Radewijns legde Gerard Zerbolt de grondslag voor een eigen spiritualiteit van de Moderne Devotie. De spiritualibus ascensionibus was nog niet in modern Nederlands vertaald. Reeds de Middelnederlandse vertaling droeg de titel Geestelijke opklimmingen. Dit boek beschrijft de weg van de mens, die uit de ongelijkenis met zijn Schepper wil terugkeren tot de oorspronkelijke gelijkenis. Tegenover de ondeugden die mensen kunnen bezielen, plaatst Gerard Zerbolt als tegenkrachten de deugden. Zijn geschrift bevat alle elementen om ook ons als mensen van deze tijd te helpen tot een nieuw mensbeeld en een nieuwe visie op de samenleving te komen.

    Description: "Cleaning is central to all societies. It is an experience shared by almost everyone. A clean home is related to both respectability and status. The mere execution of the deed – whether it concerns taking care of other peoples’ dirt or ones’ own – ranks, however, strikingly low, contaminating everyone who has to perform it. Therefore, cleaning is permeated by hierarchies of for instance gender, class, sexuality and race. Even though cleaning activates several existential and politically burning questions, it is surprisingly non-existing in research. The point of departure for this study is anthropological, and the material is a number of interviews with Swedes of today about their habits and experiences of cleaning. In focus are questions of cleaning as a cultural symbol, a bodily practice, temporality, and as an expression of taking care of decay. By investigating the meaning of what cleaning means to people – how it is experienced, organized, and distributed in everyday life – I want to discuss how such a central part of our existence is regarded as something that lacks value."

    Description: De wetenschappelijke beoefening van de neerlandistiek heeft ook buiten het Nederlandse taalgebied een lange geschiedenis. In sommige landen waren er al in de eerste helft van de negentiende eeuw taal- en letterkundigen die zich met de Nederlandse taal en de Nederlandstalige literatuur bezighielden. De geschiedenis van de internationale neerlandistiek moet tot op heden nog geschreven worden. Deze bundel met artikelen, die teruggaat op een congres dat in 2008 aan de Freie Universität Berlin gehouden werd, wil daartoe een eerste aanzet geven. De artikelen, die in het Nederlands geschreven zijn en van een Duitse en een Engelse samenvatting vergezeld gaan, geven een goede indruk van een vakgebied dat in een groot aantal Europese landen niet alleen op een lange traditie kan bogen, maar vandaag de dag bovendien ook rijkgeschakeerd en springlevend is. Die Niederlandistik hat als wissenschaftliche Disziplin auch außerhalb des niederländischen Sprachraums eine lange Geschichte. In einigen Ländern haben sich schon in der ersten Hälfte des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaftler mit der niederländischen Sprache und der niederländischsprachigen Literatur beschäftigt. Die Geschichte der internationalen Niederlandistik ist bislang weitgehend unerforscht, sie bedarf noch einer gründlichen Aufarbeitung. Dieser Band, der auf eine Tagung zurückgeht, die 2008 an der Freien Universität Berlin stattfand, will dazu einen ersten Anstoß geben. Die Artikel, die auf Niederländisch verfasst sind und denen eine deutsche und englische Zusammenfassung hinzugefügt wurde, bieten einen guten Überblick über ein Fachgebiet, das in einer großen Zahl europäischer Länder nicht nur eine lange Tradition hat, sondern gegenwärtig auch breit aufgestellt und quicklebendig ist.

    Description: Nauw met elkaar verbonden, maakten theater en retorica vanaf de vijftiende eeuw in de Latijnse geleerdencultuur en de volkstalige wereld van het verstedelijkte Europa een renaissance door. Op basis van onderzoek naar ideeën, (literaire) praktijken en leden laat Lustige geesten zien dat de rederijkerskamers de Nederlandse variant waren van een vroegmoderne cultuur van publieke welsprekendheid, met het theater als quintessens. Rederijkers (rhetoriziens) drukten de intellectuele en maatschappelijke missies van hun kamers uit in het kernbegrip retorica (rhetorique) dat zowel verwees naar (utopische) idealen van burgerlijkheid als naar het toepassen van kennis (conste) in een geëngageerde cultuur. De noordelijke Nederlanden (vooral Holland en Zeeland) vormden met de zuidelijke (vooral Vlaanderen en Brabant) één rederijkerswereld van overlappende netwerken waarin via een actieve lees-, gespreks- en discussiecultuur internationale culturele trends lokaal en regionaal verwerkt werden. De middelen van publieke welsprekendheid (het schrijven en opvoeren van toneelspel, lied, gedicht) waren (intern) bedoeld om (in een ludieke en competitieve sfeer) de geest van jonge mannen uit gegoede families en middengroepen te vormen. Door de organisatie (extern) van opvoering in de lokale feestcultuur en op interlokale rederijkersfestivals functioneerden kamers als publicatiecentra voor hun beste schrijvers en performers. De rederijkers droegen zo bij aan de opkomst van een volkstalige geleerdencultuur en namen deel aan het publieke debat. Lustige geesten laat zo zien op welke manieren de sociale, institutionele en culturele elementen van de rederijkerscultuur de maatschappelijke invloed van de rederijkers bepaalden en hun bijdrage aan de opkomst van de (noordelijke) Nederlanden als Europees cultureel centrum. Lustige geesten wordt op unieke wijze aangevuld met de site "http://www.lustigegeesten.nl"〉www.lustigegeesten.nl. Deze site presenteert een proposografie van rederijkers - een database met biografietjes van alle bekende leden van de rederijkerskamers van Haarlem (1502-1650), Middelburg (1494-1650) en Den Haag (1494) - en een deel van de bestanden waarop de prosopografie en de analyses uit Lustige Geesten gebaseerd zijn.     Description: The tenth volume of the Lage Landen Studies explores the road of an original Dutch-language book from its original version to the translation that arrives into the hands of a non-native reader. This collection of research articles features literary translations with Dutch as source language. The authors pay special attention to production-specific aspects of the literary transfer process: What are the conditions to make a translation? Who is involved in the process? What part do translators and institutions play? Which norms determine the production and distribution of translated texts? In their contributions on transfer to the German, English, French, Indonesian, Russian and Czech language, the authors mention different aspects that are mainly new to the cultural transfer of Dutch-language literature abroad and/or give new impulses to its research.

Nederlandse literatuur op weg naar de buitenlandse lezer besteedt aandacht aan de verschillende fasen en aspecten van het parcours dat een Nederlandstalig boek doorloopt vanaf de originele versie tot zijn aankomst bij een anderstalige lezer. Daarbij staan literaire vertalingen centraal met Nederlands als brontaal. Van de drie elementen van het transferparcours – selectie, transport en receptie – gaat de aandacht in het bijzonder uit naar kwesties die met de productiezijde van het literaire transferproces te maken hebben. Vragen die daarbij een rol spelen zijn onder andere: onder welke voorwaarden komt een vertaling tot stand? Wie zijn daar allemaal bij betrokken? Welke rollen spelen vertalers en instituties daarbij? Welke normen bepalen de productie en verspreiding van vertaalde teksten? In de bijdragen over transfer naar het Duits, Engels, Frans, Indonesisch, Russisch en Tsjechisch komen uiteenlopende aspecten ter sprake die in het onderzoek naar cultural transfer grotendeels nieuw zijn en/of belangrijke impulsen geven aan bestaand onderzoek naar de transfer van Nederlandstalige literatuur naar het buitenland.

Daarover schrijven onze bekende Elisabeth Wolff en Agatha Deken, in hun nu voor het eerst sinds 1802 heruitgegeven, laatste grote werk: het Geschrift eener bejaarde vrouw. Zij laten zien hoe een bejaarde vrouw terugkijkt op haar leven. De vrouw tekent op welke waarden zij als opgroeiend meisje heeft leren kennen. Hoe haar opvoeding verliep. Hoe zij geconfronteerd werd met de realiteit van het leven: natuur, dood, armoede, standsverschillen, mannen, cultuur. Hoe zij leerde een levensovertuiging op te bouwen. In de terugblik van deze vrouw wordt zichtbaar hoe een wijs ouderlijk beleid kan leiden tot zelfontplooiing, verlicht christendom, volwassenheid. De schrijfsters tonen dit, niet door het uiteenzetten van standpunten, maar door belevingen te schetsen, door ouders(s) en kind) in directe rede met elkaar te laten praten, door vele andere middelen.
