    Description: The „Flecken Adelebsen“ at the edge of the „Solling“ in southern Lower-Saxony looks back to 300 years of jewish history. In 19th century it was named “Little Jerusalem” because of the high number of jewish habitants. Today only the jewish graveyard has outlived. The aim of this documentation is to tap this “House of Living” as a new historical resource and do a part of an outstanding and necessary mourning work.

    Description: Das niedersächsische Nordhorn war historisch lange eine Hochburg der Kommunistischen Partei Deutschlands (KPD) sowie später der Deutschen Kommunistischen Partei (DKP), bis in die 1990er-Jahre hinein konnten sie hier lokalpolitische Ämter erringen. Von welchen Kontextbedingungen hing der lokale Erfolg der Nordhorner DKP ab? Wie fügte sich die Partei historisch in die Protestgeschichte ein und welches sind die zentralen Charakteristika der örtlichen gegenkulturellen Szene? Diesen Fragen geht die vorliegende FoDEx-Studie nach. Sie skizziert die zentralen Charakteristika und langfristigen Entwicklungstendenzen der linksradikalen bzw. linken Szene vor Ort und setzt diese in Bezug zum stadtpolitischen Erbe der Textilindustrie Nordhorns und der andauernden materialistischen Konfliktlinie. In einer mehrschrittigen Analyse werden wichtige Resonanz- und Verständigungsräume ebenso beleuchtet wie das individuelle Akteurshandeln vor Ort.

    Description: The surge in public debt during the recent pandemic crisis has made high debt a prominent policy issue. Italy is an interesting case study since it has experienced high levels of debt for a significant part of its history. This article revisits the history of Italian public debts in the inter-war period. Italy emerged from WWI with public debt that peaked around 160 percent of GDP. In the mid-1920s a significant reduction of public debt occurred, in concomitance with a regime of fiscal austerity and two restructuring agreements that wiped more than 80 percent of Italian foreign debts. By the early 1930s, the US reaction to the Great Depression that opposed any form of international cooperation, led to an Italian default on war debts in 1934 and a move toward autarky.

    Description: Vulcano, Sicily 1964. After a meeting with him in Cortona, Helle Busacca, a poet and writer from Messina, began drafting an epistolary diary dedicated to Corrado Pavolini, a well-known intellectual and film director of Tuscan origins with whom she had been in love for over twenty years. Through the so far unpublished pages she dedicated to “una storia senza storia” (“a story without history"), the writer brings to life an incandescent theatre of the self, in which the dramatization of personal experience, the self-representative elaboration and the expression of a living and restless inner self combine in a mixture of strongly hybrid characters, which is conveyed by a disruptive communicative force. As the desperately pursued interlocutor becomes increasingly evanescent and unreachable, the voice of a modern tragic heroine emerges unmistakably between claim and confession.

    Description: After a long process, the reopening of Milanese canals has become one of the fundamental actions of the Town Plan approved in 2019. A strategic project that plans to reactivate the covered section of the Naviglio Martesana and the Cerchia Interna, reuniting Adda and Ticino rivers, and give new life to the great Renaissance project that Leonardo himself had worked on. In its methodological approach and in the specific outcome achieved, we can recognize elements of continuity with Leonardo’s thinking and contribute to a territorialist reflection on its current relevance.

    Description: The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Through documents from the Einaudi Archives in Turin and the Archivio del Novecento (Sapienza University), this book traces Ginzburg's editorial work in the postwar period, when she had major editorial responsibility and coordinated the translation of Proust’s Recherche. The correspondences with authors and translators restore a new profile of the writer, bringing to light the relevance of her intervention in narrative series, such as “Coralli” and “Gettoni”; the interaction between the professions of writer, editor and translator, from which recurring elements of poetics emerge; and the issues involved in being the only woman to have a decision-making role in the Einaudi editorial staff of the time.

    Description: "To this day, the history of international law is dominated by a Eurocentric historiography in which non-European worlds play a passive role at best. Master narratives of universalisation and progress may include their histories; however, they appear not in the form of actors, but as mere receivers. By analysing the first Hispano-American textbook on international law, this transdisciplinary study questions this narrative of passivity. In his compendium, published in 1833, the Chilean polymath Andrés Bello translated European doctrines of international law for use in the context of the “New World”. Using a postcolonial approach, the study demonstrates that the imitation of the European discourse on international law was not a purely passive and submissive act, but deeply ambivalent behaviour which opens up a space for resistance and is reminiscent of Homi K. Bhabha’s concept of mimicry."

    Description: This book addresses the topic of entrepreneurial succession in the family business. This is a fundamental passage, frequently decisive in a type of enterprise that is extremely common in the Italian and European economic context. Consequently, it is evident that appropriate planning of this phase and a knowledge of the most pertinent strategic and operational alternatives are of crucial importance. After an initial overview of the specific features of the family business, the book addresses the typical problems related to the opening up of the corporate structure and the succession process from an entrepreneurial point of view. This is followed by an analysis of various tools for planning the succession and the principal operations deemed functional to the entrepreneurial succession process.
    Description: In questo volume si affronta il tema della successione imprenditoriale nell'impresa familiare. Si tratta di un passaggio fondamentale, spesso decisivo per la sopravvivenza di questo particolare tipo di imprese, peraltro molto diffuso nel contesto economico italiano ed europeo. Emerge dunque con forza l'importanza di un'adeguata pianificazione e conoscenza delle alternative strategiche ed operative ideali a realizzarla. Dopo una ricognizione delle peculiarità delle imprese familiari, vengono affrontate le problematiche tipiche dell'apertura della compagine sociale e della procedura successoria, in un'ottica imprenditoriale.     Description: In light of the dramatic events which have been shocking Ukraine since November 2013, this work’s itinerary aims at functioning as a basis for the formulation of new contact points, for a dialogue between traditions and cultures which nowadays are again being shaken by the events of history. The author examines the self-identification paths of the literary phenomenon of Russian language in Ukraine. With the help of interviews with important representatives of the Ukrainian Russian-speaking literary scene, made on the eve of the so-called 'Ukrainian crisis', the author shall closely observe the origins of the marginal nature of these 'post-Soviet hybrid narratives'.

    Description: The art of printing with movable type made its appearance in Perugia -then as now, the heart of Italy- in 1471, when the city was under the sway of Braccio Baglioni. Perugia was home to an important university which had been attracting students from all over Europe for more than a century. They found hospitality in two colleges, of which the ‘Sapienza Vecchia’, in particular, was accustomed to accommodating students from abroad. The colleges were themselves instrumental in assisting the work of the earliest printers, all of them foreigners; their enterprise flourished for about fifteen years before strong competition from larger printing centres, notably Venice, took control of the Perugian book market. A second phase in local book production started at the turn of the century under the aegis of two major players, the Cartolari family and Bianchino dal Leone. The history of the book in Perugia is characterized by a quality and originality which is not reflected in the modest quantities produced there, and the major bibliographers have always taken an interest in it. All that and more can be found in this book, the outcome of lengthy research based on detailed analysis of all known editions and archival documents, including a number of new discoveries.

Damit wird angezeigt, dass die Erforschung des Wahrnehmens nicht ausschließlich und vorrangig Thema von Naturwissenschaften ist, sondern eine originäre philosophische Aufgabe darstellt. Wahrnehmen, verstanden als praktisch-sinnliche Tätigkeit, macht darauf aufmerksam, dass wir im Wahrnehmen weder passiv etwas erleiden noch dass das Wahrgenommene außerhalb und unabhängig von unseren Wahrnehmungen vorhanden wäre. Vielmehr meint Wahrnehmen von etwas als etwas Bestimmtem, dass im Vollzug einer gemeinsamen Praxis die dort getätigten Bestimmungen als miteinander geteilte Bestimmungen verstanden werden.

    Description: The volume, dedicated to the 44th International Conference of the Italian Union for Drawing, investigates the theme of ‘Transitions’, which particularly effectively represents our time and the current condition of the discipline of Drawing. The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: Even today, Italians tend to adopt a double imagine of their national character, played on the contrast between an evolved and conscious minority (‘us’) and a backward and typically pre-modern majority (‘them’). As Giulio Bollati has shown better than any other in a famous essay, this self-representation draws its origins first of all from the period between the late Enlightenment and the early Napoleonic age, in which for the first time the Peninsula was called to deal with the models imposed by the great European modernization. The paper aims to reconstruct the process that led some of the most prominent political thinkers of this years (Baretti, Verri, Gioia, Botta, Cuoco) to adopt the image mentioned above - and this privileging the approach of the constitutional history.

Das widerspricht allerdings den vorherrschenden sozialen Anschauungen. Sie verlangen folglich nach einer Begründung für den dem Recht zugeschriebenen Anspruch verbindlicher Maßgeblichkeit. Demgemäß ranken sich um die Idee solcher Normativität des Rechts Vorstellungen, Bilder und Begriffe, die eine innere Bindung durch Recht plausibel zu machen suchen. Es wird gezeigt, daß sich diese Konnotationen der Idee der Rechtsverbindlichkeit auf drei Grundfiguren zurückführen lassen, die der Grammatik der persönlichen Fürwörter korrespondieren.Der Autor ist Professor für Öffentliches Recht, Rechts- und Staatsphilosophie an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

    Description: Franz Rosenzweig ist bei uns - bedingt durch die nationalsozialistische Judenverfolgung - immer noch ein weitgehend Unbekannter. Dabei hatte er allein schon mit seinem zweibändigen Werk "Hegel und der Staat" (1920) wesentlich zur Neubelebung der gesellschafts- und geschichtsphilosophischen Diskussion beigetragen. Umwälzender ist jedoch der existenzphilosophische Neuansatz, den Rosenzweig mit seinem Hauptwerk "Der Stern der Erlösung" (1921) vorlegte. Es ist dies nicht nur eines der bedeutenden theologischen Werke des 20. Jahrhunderts, dessen Herausforderung - wenn auch verspätet - von den christlichen Kirchen heute mehr und mehr erkannt und aufgenommen wird, sondern das ihm zugrunde liegende Neue Denken ist auch in fundamentaltheologischer Hinsicht von einschneidender Bedeutung. An der kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Deutschen Idealismus gereift, wirft Rosenzweig die grundlegenden Fragen nach der negativen Begrenztheit unseres Denkens, dem existentiellen Grund unseres Daseins, nach dessen Zeitlichkeit und Sprachlichkeit sowie nach dem Anderen und dem Wir der Gemeinschaft auf - Fragen, die auch heute noch die philosophische Gegenwartsdiskussion bestimmen. Den vorliegenden Studien geht es um eine einführende Vergegenwärtigung der Existenzphilosophie Rosenzweigs von unterschiedlichen Aspekten her. sie versuchen sich dem Neuen Denken Rosenzweigs vor allem vom Entstehungskontext aus den Gesprächen mit den Freunden - Hans Ehrenberg, Eugen Rosenstock, Martin Buber - zu nähern. ihr Ziel ist jedoch kein philosophiegeschichtliches, sondern die Vermittlung der existentiellen Fragen Rosenzweigs an uns.

    Description: The volume, dedicated to the 44th International Conference of the Italian Union for Drawing, investigates the theme of ‘Transitions’, which particularly effectively represents our time and the current condition of the discipline of Drawing. The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: What is there left to say about the human condition after the so-called „end of anthropology“? Never before have conceptions of what it means to be a human being been as diverse and fragmented as in the late modern age – with severe consequences for democratic discourse and liberal, „Western“ societies as a whole. Examining the work of American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr (1892–1971), the book presents new insights into the intersection of anthropological thought and ethical orientation. Niebuhr, motivated by his perception of profound political and social crises in „Western“ societies, develops an innovative, pragmatic and „realistic“ type of theological anthropology. His anthropological approach functions as the basis of a much larger endeavor: rescuing Christianity and democracy itself. Reading Niebuhr today opens up a refreshing perspective on current debates on public theology and the so-called „crisis of democracy“. In this context, the book argues, theological anthropology can be reclaimed as an essential social resource: It offers a comprehensive understanding of human nature both at its best and at its worst, providing the indispensable basis for the survival and vitality of democracy.

Dieses Problemfeld bearbeitet die Autorin unter Rückgriff auf das Denken des hierzulande wenig bekannten US-amerikanischen Theologen Reinhold Niebuhr (1892–1971). Auf breiter Quellenbasis werden Genese, Funktion und Profil seiner theologischen Anthropologie herausgearbeitet, die sich als pragmatisch orientiertes, zentral um die Sündenlehre kreisendes Denkmodell präsentiert. Die Wahrnehmung tiefgreifender politischer und sozialer Krisen regt Niebuhr dazu an, die Anthropologie zum Fundament eines großangelegten gesellschaftlichen Rettungsprogramms auszubauen. Aus der einsichtsvollen historischen wie theologischen Aufarbeitung des Niebuhrschen Werkes leitet die Autorin gewichtige Impulse für die Debatten der Gegenwart ab. Fast scheint es, als zerstöre die Reflexion hier die Unmittelbarkeit, mit der uns der Andere phänomenal begegnet. Der Autor unternimmt im vorliegenden Werk eine kleistsche 'Reise um die Welt' entlang der Denkwege bedeutender Autoren der existenzphilosophischen Phänomenologie: Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre und Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Es gelingt ihm zu zeigen, dass die Problematik des Anderen in der Reflexion bei den besprochenen Autoren eine sich stetig vertiefende Umformung erfährt, die es ermöglicht, den Anderen und die Reflexion als Analogien einer tiefer liegenden Problematik zu begreifen. Die Reflexion erweist sich dabei letztlich nicht als Zerstörer einer alltäglich immer funktionierenden Unmittelbarkeit, sondern als Wegweiser in die Tiefen dessen, was wir Existenz nennen. Das Problem des Anderen wird hierbei nicht 'gelöst', es bedarf auch gar keiner Auflösung, wenn man begreift, dass die Unzugänglichkeit des Anderen nur die Kehrseite der Unzugänglichkeit des eigenen Selbst ist. Der Andere ist letztlich nicht mehr und nicht weniger rätselhaft als ich selbst es bin, und gerade in dieser Dunkelheit liegt das Wesen der Existenz.

    Description: Social media are nowadays fertile ground for debates that are often rich in arguments of persuasive value. In the present writing, we hypothesize that emotions play a significant role in determining the success of arguments on social media. In order to validate the hypothesis, we analyzed Change My View, an Internet forum on Reddit where the persuasiveness of the discussions among participants is explicit and regulated by specific norms. Our analysis revealed that arguments enjoying a higher degree of success were characterized by two particular emotions: anticipation and joy, which we interpret as belonging to engagement, a more general emotional dimension that includes them both. Such characteristics of successful arguments lead us to consider the persuasive experience on social media as analogous to a playful experience. Like in a game, in order to successfully take part in such a persuasive experience, certain requirements are needed: commitment and respect for the rules as well as joyful participation.

Turkey’s autocratisation has led not only to strained interstate relations but to a deterioration of the social climate in Germany as a country of immigration. In addition, the issues of xenophobia and racism in Germany have repeatedly been raised. It can be assumed that the interplay between perceived discrimination in Germany and Erdoğan’s popularity as a self-styled ‘lawyer for Turks’ in Germany has resulted in greater susceptibility to populist promises and Turkish-nationalist identity-building. This empirical study examines how political views influence migration-related decisions of successor generations among people of Turkish origin in North Rhine-Westphalia who intend to (re)settle in Turkey.

Die Autokratisierung der Türkei führte nicht nur zur Belastung der zwischenstaatlichen Beziehungen, sondern auch des gesellschaftlichen Kimas im Einwanderungsland Deutschland. Zugleich stellte sich wiederholt die Frage nach Fremdenfeindlichkeit und Rassismus in Deutschland. Dabei ist anzunehmen, dass Wechselwirkungen zwischen der Wahrnehmung von Benachteiligung in Deutschland und dem Zuspruch zu Erdoğan und seiner Inszenierung als „Anwalt der TürkInnen“ in Deutschland möglicherweise anfällig für populistische Versprechungen und türkisch-nationalistische Identitätsstiftung machen. Die empirische Studie untersucht den Einfluss politischer Einstellungen auf Migrationsentscheidungen Türkeistämmiger der Nachfolgegenerationen in Nordrhein-Westfalen, die in die Türkei übersiedeln wollen.

    Description: Following Fernand Braudel’s Méditerranée, historians interpreted the Mediterranean, Baltic, Atlantic, Indian Ocean or Pacific as closed maritime systems, consisting of multiple micro-environments. This essay seeks to overcome these limited perspectives and to examine, how the various seas and oceans were connected by the Vikings, the Cairo Genizah merchants and the Italian trading companies of the Middle Ages. The second part of my article “Connected Seas” examines the perception and memory of the seas as an element of maritime connectivity. It introduces the concept of realm of memory (lieu de mémoire) into maritime history and tests it in four case studies on the Sound, the Straits of Gibraltar, the Dardanelles and the Straits of Malacca.

    Description: The so-called data deluge, along with ever-increasing technological capabilities, tantalizes geographers with exciting opportunities for spatial data analysis. These opportunities come with challenges, because data and technology, alone, cannot address the pressing questions of our world. Spatial analysis, a.k.a. spatial statistics, is a lot more than colourful maps and attractive displays: still relatively underrepresented in the Italian geography, this discipline has grown from a strictly quantitative niche to part of a critical spatial science and continues to stimulate new developments in statistics because, as we know, spatial is special. This book, published in the series “New Geographies. Work Tools”, adds spatial analysis to the Italian geographer’s toolbox. Not a how-to manual, it presents some of the core analytical issues through the redundancy of narrative language and mathematical language. It traces the journey of spatial analysis from its roots in quantitative geography, GIS, and statistics, towards the definition of its own identity and the acceptance of its own relativity and limitations. It discusses the relationship of spatial analysis with GIScience and its efforts to embed critiques within its own discourse, emphasizing the role of theory, the importance of hypothesis testing, and acknowledging the ethics surrounding the use and analysis of data. A few examples illustrate practical implementations, showing the value added by spatial statistics in yielding reliable analyses that can support management decisions. It concludes with a brief outlook on the Italian geographic literature, where spatial analysis – like elsewhere – can play a role in competently accepting today’s opportunities and challenges, in a constructive dialogue within geography as a whole.

    Description: Umberto Gori has held the first chair of International Relations in Italy and has been the first scholar to address a series of central topics in the analysis of foreign policy and international politics. Those who browse, even if only rapidly, his rich bibliography cannot but be struck by the great variety of the topics examined: from the first works of a predominantly legal nature, we move on to studies centered on methodological and epistemological issues, relations between states, analysis of foreign policy in general and Italian foreign policy in particular, Peace Research, strategic affairs, intelligence, and finally the impact of the information and digital revolution on international politics and contemporary strategy. What holds together so many different issues is, firstly, a constant attention to methodology and, secondly, a clear preference for a predominantly operational approach, in the belief that knowledge must always be functional to decision and action. These basic attitudes are reflected not only in his strongly characterized research agenda, but also in the twofold nature of his teaching commitment: on the one hand, Gori taught outside the university classrooms, at military and governmental institutions, for decades; on the other hand, he introduced issues traditionally reserved to diplomacy and security institutions into the Italian academic context. Such a propensity to build bridges between different worlds - academic, military, technological, diplomatic, financial - and a research vocation that has never failed make Umberto Gori a figure indissolubly linked to the birth and development of International Relations in Italy.

The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017.     Description: What are the effects of internal migration controls on migrants without a regular residence permit – on “sans papiers”? The book gives an answer to this question with a comparative study of the United States and Germany. Based on expert interviews and in-depth interviews with forty sans papiers, police controls as well as controls in areas such as labor market, health care, housing, schooling and childcare are carefully analysed. The book discusses whether global economic, political or social processes have restricted the ability of advanced capitalist countries to control migration. It argues that migration policy in the OECD countries has become more similar, but this convergence only takes place at the level of policy goals and legal norms. At the level of implementation, national differences persist. The interviews show that sans papiers in the U.S. continue to have many possibilities to participate in society. In contrast, the comprehensive exclusion of sans papiers in Germany confi rms that there is no general “loss of control”.
    Description: Welche Auswirkungen haben interne Migrationskontrollen auf Migrantinnen und Migranten ohne regulären Aufenthaltsstatus - auf »Sans Papiers«? Dieser Frage geht das Buch mit einem Vergleich zwischen den Vereinigten Staaten und Deutschland nach. Anhand von Expertengesprächen und vierzig qualitativen Interviews mit Sans Papiers werden polizeiliche Kontrollen und Kontrollen in den Bereichen Arbeitsmarkt, Gesundheitsversorgung, Wohnen sowie Schule und Kinderbetreuung eingehend untersucht. Das Buch diskutiert, ob globale ökonomische, politische und soziale Prozesse die Fähigkeit von Nationalstaaten einschränken, Migration zu kontrollieren. Es wird gezeigt, dass sich die Migrationspolitik der OECDStaaten in den vergangenen Jahren zwar auf der Ebene der Leitlinien und Gesetze angeglichen hat. Bei der Implementation von Kontrollen bestehen aber nationale Unterschiede fort. Die Interviews belegen, dass Sans Papiers in den USA weiterhin vielfältige Möglichkeiten zur gesellschaftlichen Partizipation haben. Im Gegenzug zeigt das Beispiel Deutschland, dass angesichts der weitgehenden Exklusion von Sans Papiers keine Rede von einem »Kontrollverlust« sein kann.

    Description: Ancient linguistic reflection in India was able to combine the analysis of Sanskrit with the awareness that the language through which this analysis is conducted (Sanskrit) is different from the object it examines. Although this language-tool finds its dimension in the artificial Sanskrit of the sütras - the aphorisms of Påñini's grammar - metalinguistic discourse is not restricted to specialized discourse: common speech abounds in metalinguistic notations. The present work focuses on the testimonies of the grammatical school of Pâininian origin, by trying to retrace the course by which metalanguage left the field of naive linguistics to become an object of the school.

    Description: The exhibition: “La Fisica ad Arcetri. Dalla nascita della Regia Università alle leggi raziali” was organized by the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Florence and by the Florence Section of the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics, in collaboration with the Historical Archive of the Municipality of Florence, the Physical Science and Natural Mathematics Library of the University of Florence, the Science and Technology Foundation, and the “Galileo” Museum of Florence. It was held from May to September 2016 in the Exhibition Hall of the Municipal Historical Archive in via dell'Oriuolo, Florence. The time covered by the exhibition ranges from the birth of the Royal University of Florence (1924) to the enactment of racial laws in Italy by Benito Mussolini’s government (1938). The exhibited material comes from the Municipality's Historical Archive, the Garbasso Archive, the Della Corte Fund, the Department of Physics and Astronomy, the Science and Technology Foundation and from private collections. The catalogue is published as the third volume of the series of publications associated with the magazine «Il Colle di Galileo».

    Description: The article analyses the morphological means used by the Slovenian dialects of Friuli in adapting loan verbs to their aspectual system in comparison to the traditional means of expressing verbal aspect in the indigenous Slavic lexicon. In relation to verbs of Slavic origin, the formation of aspectual pairs was mainly realised by means of prefixation to the base verb (thereby perfectivising it), whereas with loans from the adjacent Romance varieties (Friulian, Italian, Venetian) suffixation proves more productive (yielding imperfectivisation). The analysis is carried out on the dialect of Resia as well as those from the Torre and Natisone Valleys. Despite some differences, in all three dialects there is generally a strong tendency to integrate loan verbs into the aspectual systems of these varieties. Biaspectual verbs, on the other hand, are relatively rare except for the particular case of the verbs in -inat in Resian.

    Description: The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences.

The research, conducted among medical specialists operating in the territorial structures of two Tuscan Health Authorities, shows a transitioning figure, which hints at a new form of medical professionalism.

    Description: The book is an analysis of the portrayal of nuclear power in Japanese journalism and the factors influencing it. Combining a field theoretical approach to journalism with frame analysis on different levels of the communica-tion process, the author argues that the nuclear industry in Japan used their financial power to build up a “pro-nuclear civil society” and that this frame-sponsoring is the reason for the relatively positive portrayal of nucle-ar power until 2011. After “Fukushima” the journalistic autonomy in this domain increased and journalism became a driving force of change in nuclear policy. At the same time the journalistic field became polarized because the more heteronomous parts of the field remain integrated into the “pronuclear civil society”. The book offers a new perspective on Japanese media and journalism scholarship, emphasizing heterogeneity and change in contrast to previous scholarship, that has focused on press clubs as institutions of pervasive media control.

The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: The term childbed presents is understood to mean gifts that were presented to the mothers of new-born babies in childbed. Presents for the new mother given for example during visits by relatives, friends and neighbours, initially consisted of food and drink. Later they could also include applied art objects. The custom of presenting childbed presents has a long tradition and still partially continues until today. In the present study, applied art objects which can be identified as childbed presents are analyzed and discussed in relation to their art historical development from the early modern period to the early 19th century. In regard to their cultural and historical context, questions about the form, content and function of these gifts will be investigated. In doing so a special field of early modern art and culture becomes accessible for the first time.

    Description: Learning devices can be embedded into organizational contexts. Through them learning processes can be intentionally activated as to transform employees while working. Workplaces have their own learning potential due to their high level of structuring and regulation. Their learning potential transform organizational actors while they are in the productive actions. Identifying embedded learning processes helps in intercepting learning valencies of workplace experiences and observing learning actions that can lead to transformative processes. Results of related research activities are presented in the volume. They have been carried out in more than ten years of research implemented in three types of organisations: business, museum, prison. Research experiences are analysed by using a model of study that is based on the reconstruction of the learning processes as they are experienced by the actors considered. Moreover the model is based on the analysis of learning actions that are embedded into the productive and service provision processes. Factors and conditions are analysed as well through which organisations can act on employees transformation.

    Description: The idea of a planning-oriented geography was part of the ‘revolutionary’ renewal program of the discipline proposed by Massimo Quaini since the 70’s. First through an analysis of how human geography was built in the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, then in the theoretical and methodological writings in which he critically examines his experiences as a geographer engaged in urban, regional, environmental and landscape planning works. In such writings, he highlights the latent and unsolved contrast between the aim of meeting the needs of the inhabitants and the tendency to organize the local space according to economic competition.

    Description: In the undulating plains of north-eastern Syria is the site of Tell Barri, identified with the city of Kahat. The archaeological sequence which has been brought to light stretches without interruption from the start of the third millennium up to the fourteenth century AD. This report records the results of the seventeenth excavation campaign, carried out by the group from the University of Florence and from the “Federico II” University of Naples. Layers from the end of the third millennium have been brought to light, the passage between the Mid- and Neo-Assyrian periods. In the palace of Tukulti-Ninurta II the reception hall was discovered. For the later periods, investigation has proceeded on the Great Defensive Wall of Parthian age, and on the large edifice in the lower city.
    Description: Nelle ondulate pianure della Siria nord-orientale si trova il sito di Tell Barri, identificato con la città di Kahat. La sequenza archeologica portata alla luce va dall'inizio del III millennio sino al XIV secolo d.C., senza soluzione di continuità. La presente relazione dà ragione dei risultati della diciassettesima campagna ad opera del gruppo dell'Università di Firenze e dell'Università 'Federico Il' di Napoli. Sono stati messi in luce strati della fine del III millennio, il passaggio tra periodo medio e neoassiro. Nel palazzo di Tukulti-Ninurta II è stata scoperta la sala di rappresentanza. Per i periodi tardi è proseguita l'indagine del Grande Muro di Difesa d'età partica e del grande edificio nella città bassa.

    Description: This book investigates the evolution of rusticated facings in perhaps one of the most significant contexts for their history, namely the architecture of the 15th century in Florence, where the development of this type of masonry intertwines with that of the buildings constructed over the century. Their main distinctive trait is naturalism, which in different shapes and degrees permeates every facing, thus becoming a sort of local inflection, which contaminates even the most up-to-date languages. The Florence renovatio of ancient architecture passes indeed from the masonries, as pointed out by many writings from that period, which describe their contemporary rusticated facings and compare them to the massif ancient opus quadratum. While accepting the lesson on magnificence by the Julio-Claudian rustication, Florence facings would never become a faithful reproduction of the Roman models, but would always retain traditional characters and patterns, constantly oscillating between an expressive freedom and a yearning for the rigour of form.

    Description: On 12, 13 and 14 May 2003 the second edition of the study days on didactic materials for the teaching of foreign languages was held in Florence. Numerous language teachers, mainly active in Italian universities but also in private and public high schools took part in these study days. The speakers addressed a wide range of issues ranging from the implications of the enlargement of the European Union to the educational use of new technologies, from aspects of contrastive linguistics to the use of foreign languages for the teaching of non-linguistic subjects. From this dialogue between different experiences and cultures, an extremely dynamic picture emerged, open to new methodological and scientific stimuli. The volume is the significant collection of over 40 interventions and represents a contribution to the discussion on the teaching of foreign languages.

    Description: Electricity generation from renewable sources of energy has had a long history in Germany and is highly topical. This paper deals with both aspects. A sociological analysis of technology shows how innovative technologies gradually emerged from the Utopian vision of 'velvet' energies, which became the basis of the rapidly growing regenerative electricity production. The second aspect of the paper is an analysis of the growing potential - as well as possible obstacles - of regenerative energies. The expansion of energy production from renewable sources and the tendency towards the concentration of such installations (e.g. large wind farms or solar parks) is increasingly met with opposition from the public. In addition, it is felt that considerable changes in the energy sector can only be successful if its promoters become more active.

    Description: Europe, as the title of this collective book indicates, is a project under construction and David Sassoli, who is honored here, one of its most striking and memorable builders. European construction, despite all the deviations and hesitations that distinguish every single genuine human situation, has been based on a set of values that represent our own identity, in the full recognition of all the differences that simultaneously nourish it. Culture has progressively played a major role in this lasting European undertaking. In this chapter, by honoring a man who hoped for a better spiritual condition for Europe, we reassess one of the main instruments for establishing a cultural path in Europe: the European Capital of Culture (ECOC) project. The record and the tone of the following pages is far beyond the usual scope of mere description. The principal inspiring aim is the quest for synergy between criminal law and administrative law in the activities aimed at fighting corruption. The 'final' interests damaged by corruption are fundamental (public safety, national economy), such as to demand the stigmatisation and efficacy inherent to the penal instrument. However, no less important is the prevention aspect recommended by the European and international institutions, which can be achieved through a real and effective reinforcement of administrative instruments, such as the prevention of conflicts of interest or the strengthening of the disciplinary system.

    Description: Der Versuch, Friedrich Schillers Text Über die Ästhetische Erziehung des Menschen (1795) als ›Literatur‹ und nicht als ein theoretisch-poetologisches Dokument der Philosophie über die Kunst zu lesen, stellt die Plausibilität seiner konventionellen disziplinären Verortung in Frage. Denn der darin enthaltene programmatische Anspruch an die »ästhetische Kunst« und die »Dichtung« vollzieht sich zugleich und im selben Text anhand von literarischen Praktiken - wie der Performanz ›logischer Fehler‹. Mit dieser anderen Perspektive auf den vielfach gedeuteten Text erklärt und begründet Alexa Lucke die bis heute ungelösten Probleme seiner logischen Unstimmigkeiten, Widersprüche und Aporien.

    Description: The volume, dedicated to the 44th International Conference of the Italian Union for Drawing, investigates the theme of ‘Transitions’, which particularly effectively represents our time and the current condition of the discipline of Drawing. The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: Detlef Heikamp's is one of the greatest scholars of the collections of historical pieces in Florence; to celebrate his 90th birthday, on the 10th an 11th November 2017, a study meeting dedicated to the birth of epigraphy as historical science was organised. The Uffizi Galleries were the ideal setting for such an initiative: there, starting from the 17th century, one of the most valuable Greek and Latin epigraphy collections was created, and it would deeply mark the evolution of this field of study; it is precisely to this institution which Detlef Heikamp decided to donate a precious selection of finds from his collection of inscriptions, in the aftermath of a disastrous attack in 1993. The most authoritative experts in the sector participated enthusiastically in the two days in Florence; their ten contributions are now collected in this volume, which offers an updated and accurate picture of the excellence of Italian research in the field of Greek and Roman epigraphy.
