    Beschreibung: Europe, as the title of this collective book indicates, is a project under construction and David Sassoli, who is honored here, one of its most striking and memorable builders. European construction, despite all the deviations and hesitations that distinguish every single genuine human situation, has been based on a set of values that represent our own identity, in the full recognition of all the differences that simultaneously nourish it. Culture has progressively played a major role in this lasting European undertaking. In this chapter, by honoring a man who hoped for a better spiritual condition for Europe, we reassess one of the main instruments for establishing a cultural path in Europe: the European Capital of Culture (ECOC) project. The record and the tone of the following pages is far beyond the usual scope of mere description. Guided by the inspiring example of Sassoli, we face up to suggest a set of measures that will allow the ECOC action to fully meet its purpose, thus contributing to make the cultural option in Europe truly irreversible.

    Beschreibung: The clear and complete relationship that historically linked city and countryside has gradually faded more and more, up to the configuration of the current situation of urban sprawl by several parties considered unsustainable at the environmental, functional and morphological level. While an approach aimed at recovering lost physical and territorial realities may not appear very effective, it is however possible to attempt to identify paths to restore structure in the contemporary settlement layouts. A structure able to newly weave ecological, functional, morphological and symbolic relations between the urban and rural dimension. In this frame of reference, a decisive role can be played by open spaces, non-built-up natural or farming environments which constitute a resource for regaining the environmental quality of the contemporary city; for the construction of a new large system of public and collective spaces; and for the redefinition of limits, boundaries and thresholds between city and countryside. These are the topics dealt with in the book through a theoretical focus on the "middle landscape", its roots and the more recent planning experiences, and through a planning exercise on the Pistoia landscape. The aim of the volume is to attempt to provide indications and tools in order to read and design landscape with urban boundaries, today a strategic sphere for the regeneration of the contemporary city.

The territorial context, a both existing and potential heritage for the settled community, is considered as a fundamental 'actant' in the ecological transition process.     Beschreibung: In recent years the subject of energy planning has come to occupy a role of growing importance, both in relation to the escalating costs, scarcity and impact of energy procurement and consumption and in relation to the increasingly broad future prospects generated by the development of technologies for the exploitation of renewable sources. Within this framework, the development and use of the latter frequently appears to be without benchmarks for integration into the broader picture of territorial planning, and hence of coordination with other human activities and territorial resources. With this in mind, this book aims to compose the elements of a perspective in which energy planning is seen not as an ulterior and separate form of planning, but as an activity integrated within the more general instruments for the government of the territory, and more specifically one that employs the resources of the territory in a sustainable manner also with a view to endogenous local development.

    Beschreibung: (Good) government of the consumption of the territory is now one of the most difficult challenges facing planning and all the other sciences that contribute to the design of effective urban and territorial policies. With a view to contributing to debate on such issues, the authors reflect on the new forms of public decision-making, on the potential of territorial equalisation and on other sizing mechanisms, with reference both to the areas under transformation and the consolidated urban contexts. Based on an in-depth investigation of regeneration, requalification and densification projects for urban areas or metropolitan regions in Italy, Europe or the rest of the world, the text suggests various strategies for intervention with reference to the Tuscan case.

    Beschreibung: The essay traces back the maturation of eco-territorialism starting from the late 1970s ‘rediscovery’ of the territory, coinciding with the crisis of the Fordist model, the rise of the diffuse factory and the beginning of globalisation processes. In the evolutions and involutions of such scenario up to the recent pandemic and the Russian-Ukrainian war, the advocates of eco-territorialism find reasons to challenge the unlimited urbanisation of space; to frame the question of dwelling as an unavoidable ethical-political problem; to overcome the reductionism of those who read the ecological crisis as a mere climate change or energy issue; to problematise and radically redefine the ideas of development and planning, reconnecting them to the self-sustainable reconstruction of material and immaterial relations between the inhabitants and the anthropic, ecosystem and bioregional complexity of places.

    Beschreibung: The dissertation deals with the contemporary city soundscape and fits into the disciplinary field of sensuous urbanism, soundscape studies and emotional geography. The key term, soundscape, is to be understood as all the sounds that surround us, as a perceptual theme, that is, object of a subject's perception, in its sense of 'landscape' including the metaphorical meaning of an emotional or mnemonic emotional soundscape. The dissertation is structured in two parts: the first and second chapters define the disciplinary spheres of sensory urbanism and soundscape studies, while the third and fourth chapters explore the forms that classical sound environment analysis and planning tools take on within the aforesaid disciplinary fields. Finally, the conclusions give a methodological indication aimed at favouring the integration of soundscape studies within the town planning discipline, and propose «tender sound map» and «sound niche» operating tools to help achieve the goal of planning the contemporary city's physical and sound spaces at the same time.

    Beschreibung: This book brings together the materials of a study carried out by the Florence Faculty of Architecture in liaison with the Tuscan scientific community (five universities, research institutes and technicians from the Regional Authority) to define the methods and approaches of the new Landscape Plan. The aim was to exploit the opportunities offered by recent legislation, such as the European Landscape Convention and the Cultural Heritage and Landscape Code, in order to formulate public policies and projects designed to enhance the quality of life throughout the entire territory, both valuable and degraded. Different skills, aptitudes and passions have come together in the hope that the recent phase of planning can trigger mechanisms that stimulate the inhabitants of Tuscany to continue to produce the collective work of art that is their landscape, in the exquisitely normal manner and form that left scholars such Desplanques pleasantly perplexed when he wrote: «These people have constructed their rural landscapes as if they had no concern other than beauty.»

    Beschreibung: This book illustrates the study carried out to define the project guidelines for the river park of the Arno and its tributaries the Pesa and the Elsa in the Empoli area, and has been produced by liaison between the territorial Planning Department and the Municipalities of the Empoli district. The integrated analysis of local resources scheduled, on the one hand the identification of the criticalities of the territorial system, and on the other the conscious and distinctly interpretational representation of the local cultural bedrock. The definition of scenarios for the entire territory has made it possible to demonstrate the outcomes of complex dynamics in a synthetic manner, moving on to the individual integrated projects and specific sectorial policies. It is precisely this recourse to scenarios, seen as the embodiment of a phase of project sharing and definition, that is the innovative feature of the «River Contract» proposed as a tool for the management and implementation of the plan.

    Beschreibung: In the face of the disproportionate “Greater Paris” operation and its unreasonable rhetoric, the “Biorégion Île-de-France 2050” vision tries to anticipate in project a trend already underway in things: namely, the disintegration of the colossal metropolitan agglomeration of Paris, collapsing on its fragile metabolic roots due to the increasing unsustainability of the long chains on which it has thrived. The aim is to convey this movement into a recomposition of the Capital's territory into eight bioregions, interconnected by synergetic, reticular and non-hierarchical relations in the name of local self-sustainability: the chapter describes this thought experiment that is also a concrete eco-territorialist proposal.

    Beschreibung: This book, inspired by the thought of Giacomo Becattini, reflects on why local communities continue to exist and spread. Why does the planet not become one place without borders? Why instead do we humans preferentially group ourselves into communities that are neither 'too wide' nor 'too narrow'? What characterizes today's form of community? Why are these communities rooted in places? What is peculiarly 'local' about places? Together with Becattini, we answer that the foundation of local communities is social culture. In its material and symbolic dimensions, social culture animates various forms of proximity between people and between groups: in addition to territorial proximity, social proximity (also online) and institutional proximity matter a lot. This implies that today a local community is not only a place where social culture makes us physically close, but where at least some of the major forms of proximity intersect.

For there to be a real turnaround, however, concepts such as 'biodiversity', 'biomimicry', and 'ecositemic services' need to find their proper design definition, apt to maintain the complexity of settlement forms together with the complexity of life.     Beschreibung: The spread of pandemics, war and the climate crisis has shown how close the unsustainability of the current development model, oblivious of places and their inhabitants, has now come to a point of no return; but at the same time it has made more transparent – as well as more urgent – the reasons for the eco-territorialist turn, centred on the conceptual and operational device of the urban bioregion. Delving into a discussion already underway, the essay describes such a tool by declining it along three analysis and design axes: the founding role of territorial heritage, the integrated and synergic activation of all the “constructive elements” of the production of space, and the self-government of the territory as a common good.

    Beschreibung: The initiative to offer one Festschrift to Silvano M. Danieli for his seventieth birthday pays tribute to a man and a professional whose work has left a deep mark on human relations and on the world of libraries. Silvano, librarian at the Pontifical Theological Faculty "Marianum" and Prior of the Studio Marianum community in Rome since 2014, has indeed played a strategic role in the development of URBE, the association unifying the libraries of Rome’s pontifical universities in a single network of services. The qualified list of Italian and European participants to the work is proof of the breadth of appreciation he earned in his thirty years of activity as librarian and curator of the Bibliography of the Servite Order and of the Marian Bibliography. Aelredo of Rievaulx (1109-1167), one of the leading figures of the Anglo-Saxon Cistercian monasticism, expresses the meaning of this gift with the following words: «A man, by virtue of the friendship he has towards another man, becomes a friend of God, according to what the Lord says in the Gospel: I no longer call you servants, but friends»(De spirituali amicitia, II, 14).

    Beschreibung: This book was born as a “work in in progress” and collects many of the public presentations of Giacomo Becattini’s book “La cosicenza dei luoghi. Il territorio come soggetto corale” (“The Conscience of Places. The territory as a choral subject”), published by Donzelli in 2015. The presentations inspired great methodological passion, concrete perspectives and also criticism. In fact, the text of Becattini has raised issues of great importance on the perspectives of local development, by projecting them on the very future of human societies in a period of crisis and global uncertainty. The richness, the plurality of accents and the depth of the debate that has developed ensure that the collection lives a “life of its own” even with respect to the book of origin. Becattini’s disappearance, which occurred just as the volume was being edited, leaves a huge void but stimulates even more the debate on this fresco, painted by several artists on the trace of his recent work.

    Beschreibung: This book recounts the phases in the set-up of the new Library of Social Sciences of the University of Florence. The move provided the opportunity for bringing together the collections that were scattered over seven service points and in about a dozen other sites closed to the public. At the same time, it provided the opportunity for reconsidering the services on offer, reorganising them on the basis of the characteristics of the new site. The first section tells how the library was conceived and planned, with the librarians' working groups preparing the move and projecting the changes to be made in the new site. The second part tackles the problems of organisation and management of the services in the new library.

Il trasloco è stata l'occasione per riaggregare collezioni che si trovavano sparse in sette punti di servizio e in una decina di altre sedi chiuse al pubblico. Allo stesso tempo è stata l'opportunità di ripensare i servizi offerti, riorganizzandoli sulla base delle caratteristiche della nuova sede. Nella prima parte si racconta come si è arrivati ad immaginare e progettare la biblioteca con i gruppi di lavoro dei bibliotecari che preparavano il trasloco proiettando i cambiamenti nella nuova sede. Nella seconda parte si affrontano i problemi di organizzazione e gestione dei servizi nella nuova biblioteca.

Lounges, coffees and chocolates, religious rites, curial relations and the reforming action by Pope Pious VI are the backdrop to the meticulous description of Rome as a 'diffused museum'. Bandini, librarian and scholar of the enlightenment century, visits and observes palaces, art galleries, cabinets and churches, paying particular attention to libraries, whose metaphorical sieve gives birth to remarkable pieces and precious curiosities.

    Beschreibung: The initial idea for this volume was born while rethinking the organisation of the University of Florence following the recent reform, with the aim of retracing the evolution of the Faculty of Engineering throughout its 40 years, telling and documenting its history, collecting memories and documents from a period characterised by significant changes. The research carried out by the curators and many colleagues has progressively broadened the horizon of the work to collect not only the contents of the academic history but also those of the "civil" history of the Faculty, observing its laborious growth, affirmation and consolidation in the Florentine University, and also noting the relationships with the social and economic context (the city, the region, the national and international involvement) that surrounds a significant collective entity such as “our” Faculty of Engineering. This made it possible to explore and document relevant areas that are fundamental for a non-trivial knowledge of how many actors have crossed the scenario of the Faculty and of which phenomena the Faculty itself has been an observer and protagonist. Thus, the work has been enriched with a great number of contents, declined in each chapter with pleasant energy and that are difficult to summarise in a purely historical or celebratory paradigm. If we try and visualise the readers of this volume, we think of those who will find there the path of their life, who will there find the roots of the present and who will want to discover the reasons for the future.

    Beschreibung: For some years now the Universities have assumed a dynamic role in fostering the enhancement of enterprise, making a direct contribution to the strategic management of intellectual property and the transfer of research deliverables, as well as in the training of potential entrepreneurs and the creation of structures offering support to new enterprises. Through the elaboration of empirical evidence from two quite different and hardly comparable institutional contexts – the American Babson College and the Italian University of Florence – this study analyses the potential activities of entrepreneurial matrix, in terms of relations, resources and incentives, offered for the use of young businesses in the start-up phase.

    Beschreibung: This work discusses the processes and dynamics of the landscapes of the mining industry, of the degraded areas, and of their possibilities for redevelopment through the creation of "new landscapes". The case of abandoned mining areas is seen in the context of the three phases of landscape transformation (previous, contemporary and subsequent to the mining activity), and in the context of the expanse of the regions affected by the phenomenon. The latter led to the hypothesis that the territory enhancement project should be placed within a complex system, whose main features are widespread interventions involving and intercepting both new and consolidated landscape networks.

    Beschreibung: In 2012, the bindings of the books of the ancient fund of the Library of social sciences showed the first signs of deterioration, due to the heavy changes in temperature and humidity of the conservation environment. While the University worked at implementing a new air conditioning system, the Tuscany Region and the officials of the National Central Library of Florence developed a project for the safety of the entire fund, to slow down the process of deterioration and prevent or stabilize the damage already present. The innovative method implemented in the Library was illustrated in a seminar held on November 24, 2016 at the Polo di Scienze Sociali of the University of Florence and this volume collects the speeches of the participants.

    Beschreibung: The leitmotif running through this book is a meditation on the various iconographic representations constructed in the course of research and during the drafting of planning instruments on various scales. There is special focus on the structure of drafting processes, a number of illustrative methodological syntheses and the attempt to adequately record the legends of the maps. The aim of all this is to restore the central role of the production of images in the experience recounted, and their importance within the project for the territory. To this extent, we can say that this book is an illustrated – through the products of research and the operational activities of what are frequently large and articulated groups – approach to the task of construction and organisation of the knowledge of local contexts, materialising in the attempt to delineate guidelines and scenarios for a sustainable future. Representations that are diversified in terms of method and of scale, of users and of aims, offer the cue for addressing issues that are central to the discipline, such as the need to render interpretations explicit and restore the quality of the contexts, the need to construct shared visions collectively, and from grassroots, the need to ensure that the graphic documentation can efficaciously perform differently modulated regulatory tasks. This is a process not necessarily oriented towards ameliorating the iconographic quality of the images, but rather towards consolidating and refining the languages, as well as achieving an enhanced awareness of the potential – and obviously also the limitations – of this type of disciplinary product.

    Beschreibung: This study represents the continuation and in part the completion of a research study within an Islamic educational and philanthropic institution, currently located in Greek territory. Through repeated inspections and a long work of comparison, not only have the volumes kept at the institution of Kavála been catalogued, but the composition of the entire library has also been almost entirely reconstructed, identifying additional funds belonging to it. Furthermore, the research examines the implications useful for delineating both the cultural profile of the Institution and a particular historical phase for the methodological and content innovations introduced in the transmission of knowledge within the Islamic world.

    Beschreibung: The volume collects the proceedings of the conference “Università e Territorio. Il decentramento dell'Ateneo nella Provincia di Firenze (“University and Territory. The decentralisation of the University in the Province of Florence”), which was held in Florence on January 23, 2004. The conference saw a wide participation of interventions and public debate, and dealt with the issues concerning the decentralisation of educational and scientific activities in the municipalities of the Province of Florence, with particular reference to the university settlements of Calenzano, Scandicci, Sesto Fiorentino, Vaglia, Figline Valdarno, San Casciano Val di Pesa and the district Circondario Empolese Valdelsa. The conference was conceived as an occasion of meeting and dialogue between Mayors of the Province, local administrators and deans of university degree courses. It highlighted the multiplicity and differentiation of the activities as well as the complexity of the problems related to the development of study courses in the different social-economical realities of the municipalities of the Province of Florence.

This is a serious challenge for the synthesis activity that political representation has the task of carrying out. Right-wing parties, both moderate and populist, can use the concepts of people and nation. The parties of the left no longer use the concept of class and are therefore in serious difficulty. Tony Blair’s New Labour has used the concept of citizenship. It was an invention that did not have lasting success, but it certainly helped to make the concept very popular, beyond the boundaries of legal language.

    Beschreibung: Can today’s landscape become a living construct again, moved and shaped by a plurality of actors working for its maintenance with shared modalities? This text investigates the landscape’s role and its structural features in the governance of the territory, starting from Tuscany’s experience with landscape planning: this polyphonic, rich and multifaceted reflection is aimed at promoting the birth of communication tools and agreements, which not only strengthen the decision-making system from the bottom (in order to overcome the acknowledged detachment between plans, policies and common sentiment), but also open the way to the renewal of the consolidated structures of representative democracy.

    Beschreibung: What are the cognitive and expressive choices involved in the concrete practices of creation of graphical representations of the territory? And what is the effectiveness of graphics in the government of the territory and its changes? These questions are the basis of the preparation of this work. The essay proposes and tests a hypothesis of representation of the "statute of places", that is, of an instrument regulating the transformations of the city and of the territory based on the recognition of common values, a little binding, but indicative for the determination of plans and projects.

    Beschreibung: The article is focused on some transformative trends in citizenship profiles, all of them carachterized by a de-universalinzing dynamics. The starting point is T. H. Marshall's citizenship scheme, that is thought to be inspired on both individual and universal basis concerning the citizenship rights set. The changing produced by neo-liberal ideologies and globalization pressures is moving citizenship in a commodification sense, where citizenship profiles and rights are mediated by market and profiles are more and more personal and particularistic. Specifically, the focus of this essay is on skilled citizenship and citizenship by investment formulas.

    Beschreibung: Agroecology stems from the intelligence of territories; it is a contextualised process of active and participatory cultural, scientific, technological and social elaboration. It can provide a founding humus for eco-territorialism in very tangible terms: identifying alternatives to the current agri-food system, triggering strong change dynamics for ecosystem care, consolidating sustainable practices at different scales, from the cultivated field to the organic district – actions necessary to address the current climate, socio-economic, ecological, global health emergencies; as well as affirming ethical principles of individual and social responsibility, concerning the ways of relating to, respecting and caring for both the weak segments of human population, and the natural resources water, land, air, biodiversity. Agroecological approach, strongly systemic, can therefore contribute to the elaboration of sustainability policies aimed at regenerating of territories and landscapes.

    Beschreibung: The story evokes an imaginary dialogue between a student and the master, after his death. The master is Luigi Crocetti, a well-known and unforgettable figure in the world of libraries. He was a librarian at the National Central Library of Florence, scholar and teacher of librarianship, president of the Italian Library Association in the 1980s. The master's death arouses in the student the desire to carry on a conversation with him about libraries and in particular about subject cataloguing. In these talks, the proposed themes are accompanied by feelings, memories, descriptions of landscapes, simple and naive reflections about life questions. Both of them intend to dispose the story’s protagonist and the reader to listen to the master’s lesson again. Although in narrative form, this text reviews some key passages of the Crocetti’s writings and also intends to contribute to the reconstruction of his intellectual biography. Some essays by the author about his thought and work are reproduced in the appendix.

    Beschreibung: This volume was born from a recognition of the experiences and warnings which were needed for the creation of a landscape observatory in Tuscany, and for the definition of the network and interactive methods which the observatory itself can use while aiming at its own operational effectiveness. The analysis was carried out during the formation stage of the Landscape Plan of Tuscany and during the collaboration which the Regional Authority has promoted with the Inter-University Centre of Territory Sciences. Starting from the examination of the organizational and functional models characterizing the main European and Italian experiences, in the plurality of regulatory contexts, forms of landscape planning and regulation and practices of cultural and association mobilization of the reference populations, some working hypotheses are formulated and calibrated on the Tuscan situation.

    Beschreibung: This volume reconstructs the events of the private library of the Marquis Subdean Gabriello Riccardi (1705-1798), which at the end of its development will be joined and merged with that of the Family, today known as the Riccardiana Library. The research focuses in particular on the Manuscripts Fund, which was definitely the most relevant and precious part. The final result of the present study has produced both a topographical catalogue, which reconstructs the physical layout that these manuscripts had in their original location, and an alphabetical catalogue, according to the 18th Century original. Finally, the historical essay highlights the events that led this famous library, now unified by Gabriello's will, to save itself from dispersion and remain intact as we know it today. The publication is enriched by a Repertorial Section, available with open access in the digital version of the volume (eBook), which presents a series of documents, catalogues and indexes obtained from the study on the Library of Gabriello Riccardi.

    Beschreibung: The Royal Institute of Signore Montalve alla Quiete was born between 1885 and 1886, by the union of the two congregations founded by the venerable Eleonora Ramirez de Montalvo: the Montalve di Ripoli and the Montalve alla Quiete. From them inherits the principles and the educational action carried out for over two centuries, bringing them to the threshold of the new millennium. In this analytical inventory are described the papers produced by the new Institute. The core relating to female education is only one of the subjects that this archive can offer: architectural and social transformations, the two world wars, customs and traditions of population are just some examples of the researchs offered and the Tuscan historical frame that the cards draw in a well-defined way.

    Beschreibung: The purpose of this book is to highlight the relevance of the international Open Access (OA) movement, which aims at supporting and promoting strategies for the dissemination of scientific research products with the support of network technologies and open access policies. The OA Institutional Repositories (IRs) will be presented within the framework of: some guidelines, research evaluation mechanisms, intellectual property issues, long-term storage, Data and Process Management Plan and Trusted Digital Repositories. The work will also present a survey on a sample of 23 (Italian and international) digital repositories in support of communication and of open access to online research content. On the basis of this investigation, a ToolKit will be presented which could be useful for programming and monitoring several different features of an IR. Subsequently, the reader will be presented with a metadata scheme for the description of the scientific research products in IRs, which takes into consideration the Guidelines for the creation and management of metadata in Institutional Repositories (CRUI, 2012) and the Linked Open Data-enabled Bibliographical Data Recommendations (Subirats, Zeng, 2015). Metadata enabled as limit of detection (LOD) data will play a key role in qualifying the semantic profile of the properties of the considered metadata and, consequently, of the information resources they represent. They will also contribute to the enhancement of semantic interoperability and to the online promotion of collaborative dynamics of scientific research content on an Italian and international level, strengthening the effectiveness and efficiency of research itself.

    Beschreibung: Carlo Battisti (Trento 1882-Empoli 1977) was one of the major linguists in Italy and took part to the history of cinema starring in Vittorio De Sica’s Umberto D.. His long and intense activity has been largely divided between linguistics and library science since the very beginning of his studies at the University of Vienna. In Florence, Battisti held lectures of Comparative History of the Romance Languages and of Library science and Bibliography at the School for Librarians and Palaeographer-Archivists, of which he was also director. The eight studies published here offer biographical and intellectual insights on him, and bring a series of unpublished documents to light. The volume is completed by an iconographic appendix.

    Beschreibung: The 'telluric' crises sweeping the world today at various levels – starting with the failure of the 'globalisation utopia' – have their origin in a worldwide ecological crisis that makes old development models unworkable. The emerging alternative is visible in the widespread diffusion of new territorial communities, which represent a challenge both to development models based on economic 'monoculture' and to the modern era vision of the community principle, seen as a remnant of the past doomed to disappear. Thousands of experiences of new communities are increasingly taking responsibility for a new world narrative (new territories ecologically built, principle of plurality, centrality of new social subjects and their relations, non-hierarchical forms of self-government, over-local ‘bioregional’ openness) which challenges the 19th-century opposition between 'community' and 'society': multi-actor, multidimensional and transcalar communities will be no less than the future society.

    Beschreibung: Despite having been written at different times and being characterised by a great variety of subject and a multiplicity of approach, the essays of Gabriele Mazzitelli gathered here all appear to have been triggered by a precise and organic project of exploration. In fact what pervades them all is his love of the book, seen on the one hand as an unrepeatable and magnificent object produced by individual genius and the cultural legacy, and on the other as a medium of knowledge, an intellectual and spiritual bond. The book beloved of Mazzitelli is that of the rich and variegated Slav cultural tradition. It is the Russian book first and foremost, but not only, and not in the abstract dimension of the erudite bibliographic citation, but in the lively, shifting and at times perishable dimension of the library, seen as a living site of encounter and study. The life of the Slav book in Italy depends upon its full accessibility and its complete valorisation. The studies in this volume represent a crucial passage towards the full realisation of this goal.

Based on the canonical biblical texts, the ethical perspective of David Maria Sassoli and in ideological discourses, José Saramago (re)reads the life of the murderous brother by a desacralizing bias, establishing a process of discursive reorganization of the Bible and, consequently, of Christianity – an ideology rooted in the social thought that the writer Portuguese intends to resolve. Our proposal is to probe such ethical assumptions questioned by the novel. Thus, we will focus on the figure of the protagonist to reflect on postures, symbolic representations, narrative functions and ideological expressiveness. Let us, through our reading, decommthe kaleidoscopic clash that the skilled narrator stages to present an ethical proposal in dialogue with renewing ideals of today's society.

Through the investigation of different communication contexts it is possible to reconstruct lexicon, rhetoric, narration, visual identity, relationship with the media. Far from the tones of the average union leader, Trentin remains faithful to his composed and philosophical attitude and, by so doing, successfully involves and fascinates masses, the television audience, readers, and even activists and fellow party members. The linguistic and communication strategies he uses differ not only from the traditional trade union leadership but also from politics. In Trentin’s studies the substance of the message definitely prevails on the aesthetics of the form.

    Beschreibung: This volume examines the concept of ethnic domination and its manifestations in Israel (within the Green Line) and Estonia. Ethnic domination is a method of managing ethnic differences in multiethnic contexts through asymmetrical power relations, in accordance with an ethnonationalist ideology, whereby a group is subordinated to another holding the power, albeit not intent to directly eliminate the subaltern. The volume compares the predicament of Israeli Palestinian citizens and Estonian Russian-speakers in different dimensions (state-citizenship, government-parliament, parties). Also, the analysis explains the divergent trajectories of the cases: the tightening of the condition of Israeli Palestinian citizens and the democratization of ethnic politics in Estonia.

    Beschreibung: Elegant, lofty, charming, brilliant, bellicose, refined, capricious, superb, temerarious, vain. Giulio Einaudi is an oxymoron. From the extensive literature that has furthered our understanding of his figure, he emerges as the synthesis of divergent behaviours and contrasting inclinations. This oxymoron translates in the features of his publishing house, which integrates diachronicity and current affairs, tradition and newness, scientificity and militancy. The book deepens our knowledge of one of the most neglected aspects of Giulio Einaudi’s outstanding service towards Italian culture: namely his promotion of public libraries in the 1960s in Italy. Our starting point is the establishment of Dogliani’s civic library, dedicated to his father the President Luigi Einaudi. Setting out from this event – which we have retraced with a particular eye towards oral history – the book proposes to rethink the relationship between Einaudi’s view on library project and his cultural programme, which he expressed in the same years through an intense political campaign for the promotion of public access to reading.

    Beschreibung: The vitality of a scientific field is usually attested by the fallout that research and publications have on the community of scholars who practice it and, therefore, on the development of the discipline itself and of its methodologies. The degree of “health” of a field of study, as well as its ability to get out of its niche of scholars and to see its validity recognised, is assessed by analysing whether and to what extent the works are read, commented on, cited by scholars from other geographical contexts and / or other scientific branches. The volume presents a research focused on the analysis of the level of internationalisation and vitality of Italian studies in the disciplines related to the study of books and documents, conducted through a series of parallel bibliometric investigations (query of citation databases, searches in Google scholar, application alternative metrics, library catalog analysis).

Contemporary agriculture, the daughter of the 'green revolution', of Fordism and its crisis, turned its back on the knowledge that agriculture was able to produce not only food, but also environmental protection and aesthetic quality. The texts collected in this volume are intended to encourage reflections and practices in the various areas of territory and landscape planning and design - on the university, political, technical, professional and administrative levels - which can lead the world of agriculture to regain a central role in outlining new relationships between inhabitants and territory. In these texts, the agricultural landscape represents an opportunity to produce a context where it is pleasant to live, with an approach far from the aesthetical drift of a 'picturesque’ and imaginary misunderstanding; an approach which is however careful towards a contextual aesthetic, arising within and from the rural world.

The plurality of essays collected in the book takes on a fundamental concept very dear to him: citizenship. Caruso, at the peak of his maturity, dedicated pages of great importance to it (which the book proposes and discusses) showing, «how this notion – originally an exclusively juridical concept – has acquired increasing importance in the social sciences and in political theory» as no longer and not only a «static set of rights and duties linked to the belonging of the subject to the political community» but a «bundle of social functions» and an «emerging collective force»: therefore a lever for new demands for ‘democracy’.

    Beschreibung: Eleonora Ramirez de Montalvo is one of the most important historical figures of woman’s assistance and education during the seventeenth century. She is the founder of two lay congregations: the Minime Ancille of the Divine Incarnation (1647) and the Minime Ancille of the Holy Trinity (1650). This volume lists and describes in an analytical way the papers produced and preserved by the second of these, also known Montalve alla Quiete, which for over two centuries carried out an intense activity and exerted a considerable influence in Tuscany. The study of this archive provides a unique range of information both on the economic and political events, and on the relationships maintained by the Montalve with society growing its prestige and heritage. It also offers the opportunity to undertake countless historical research on facts that concern Florentine territory and the rest of Tuscany.

    Beschreibung: In recent years, numerous reflections have pushed on the importance of using agricultural parks to recreate reciprocal relationships between urban and rural realities, through the enhancement of their proximity. The parks can also be an opportunity to experiment with new forms of planning on a territorial scale, oriented towards the construction of unitary and coherent morphological, functional and environmental scenarios. This volume offers a reflection on these issues by sharing the results of a design experience involving the School of Territory studies of Empoli (Degree in Urban and Territory Planning) and the School of territorial engineering of Clermont Ferrand (AgroParisTech ENGREF).     Beschreibung: The introduction of the concept of structural invariant in territorial and urban planning has encountered numerous application problems. The purpose of this work is to investigate the reasons and formulate a new definition capable of overcoming them. At the center of the analysis is the relationship between crucial concepts in the interpretation of the territory: development sustainability, resource, space, place, place identity, status, spatio-temporal territorial structures, and structural invariants intended as an instrument to produce and reproduce the social and environmental identity and quality of the territory. The fulcrum is the organization and functioning of the territory, the spatio-temporal processes and the actors who created them. And from intangible, but objective values, it is necessary to take the moves: the real estate values and the values attributed by the different population groups, in terms of memory, attribution of meaning and identity.

    Beschreibung: The territory is constantly being torn by thousands of conflicting interests and, as a common good, it is in growing need of a unitary planning, suitable for the people living, working and consuming in it: an amount of suitability including urban places, city networks, rivers, valleys, agricultural areas and coastal hinterlands. Compared to the architectural and urban project, the territorial project has much more episodic and sectoral disciplinary rules. This volume is the Tuscan outcome of a national research on the "territorial project", and provides the concept of urban bioregion as a methodology which can integrate analyses and projects on: the environmental prerequisites of the settlement, the reconfiguration of synergies between city and countryside, the polycentric rebalancing of urban systems, locally-based economic and energy systems, forms of self-government for local and self-sustainable development starting from the rules for the enhancement of the territory’s heritage.

A recent aspect of this process, started by North American university institutions such as Stanford, Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is represented by the worldwide offer of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), which have no limit concerning the number of participants. and do not require a binding and expensive registration. Using international literature on the subject, this study analyses the origins and evolution of this new system of university teaching.

    Beschreibung: The liberal democracies of the West are experiencing a process of slow but constant and apparently unstoppable degradation. The main thesis of this contribution is that the primary reason for this degradation must be identified in the jamming of the representative mechanism and in the incapacity of democratic politics to stage transparent, recognizable and realistic conflicts on significant dimensions of social life and to present ideas of different and probable futures. Pulverized by complexity and differences, society and the future have become unrepresentable. Saturation of the world and global interdependence, on the one hand, assembled identities, belongings without transcendence and individualization of meanings, on the other, produces a need for immediacy, for political and social disintermediation that is increasingly less compatible with the functioning of representative democracy and with its privileged if not exclusive incardination within the framework of the nation-state. The outcome is, therefore, that of a structural misalignment between configurations of subjectivity and institutional arrangements. Underlying the troubles of modern democracy is the increasingly evident gap between individuals as they really are (became) and individuals as they should be in order for political institutions to function adequately.

    Beschreibung: The stories and interpretations of participation that make up this book are the result of research carried out during the drafting of the new law on participation, subsequently approved by the Tuscan Regional Authority (L.R. 69/07). The context is presented in two introductory essays that discuss some of the most relevant issues of participation This is followed by a section consisting of thirty-eight factsheets that critically address several of the Tuscan participatory experiences, broken down into five interpretational 'boxes': governance, decisional democracy, participatory planning, social self-organisation and conflict. Emerging from the cases analysed is a variegated landscape of experiences of interactive planning, with lights and shadows, significant results and difficulties, related primarily to the implementation phase of the projects. The authors seek to recount and valorise certain of the more original and innovative pioneering experiences, and to offer food for thought for the greater spread and enhanced efficacy of participatory practices, interactive planning and social self-organisation.

This publication analyses the reality of open access from the different points of view of the people who bring it to life: authors, publishers, academic world, legislators, users of knowledge, etc. The University of Florence, which is among the major players in the promotion of open access in Italy, has long been following the march in favour of open access, through the use of the green road with FLORE, its institutional repository, and of the gold road with Firenze University Press (FUP), whose publications have been available through open access since the early 2000s.

This book investigates the consistency and usefulness for the sciences of the territory of the paradigm of ecosystem services from multiple disciplinary horizons, advancing the proposal to bring it back within a bioregional approach, with the introduction of the concept of eco-territorial services.

    Beschreibung: Over recent years, there has been a sharp increase in the various possible forms of poverty and housing vulnerability: from the total lack of shelter of the homeless to the risk of losing their home that now threatens numerous families in medium-low income brackets. At the same time, the traditional linear and standardised housing policies appear no longer adequate to address these phenomena. This book contains the results of a study entrusted by the Tuscan Regional Authority to a working group from the University of Florence and the Fondazione Giovanni Michelucci. The research explores the field of practices for self-production of housing in Italy and the world, through a critical selection of significant experiences, revealing the architectural and social creativity exploited in a large variety of collective actions. The book also contains a reconstruction of housing problems in Tuscany and an overview of alternative approaches to housing policy. The last section is devoted to the research-action on the occupation of the Luzzi, the abandoned sanatorium on the border between Florence and Sesto Fiorentino, a case that illustrates the most significant contradictions and dilemmas gravitating around the housing issue for the new poor: the problem of homeless immigrants; the difficulty of the authorities in managing problems of extreme housing poverty; the role of the associations and organisations of social mediation, and the inherent complexity of achieving a participatory approach to social and town planning research.

With the arguments and the praxis introduced and explained by Naudé, in the first decades of the XVII century has begun the discipline “Librarianship as the science of the selection and of the order of books” that implement their disposition in a library. With Naudé the library becomes not only the proper image of the science, but a true testimonial of the verity against its manipulations and errors. In such a vision of both the research and morality, the naudean philosophical principles can be properly situated in the frame of a mature preilluminism.

    Beschreibung: The concept of urban bioregion provides an interpretive and design perspective to the critical vision of planetary urbanisation, pursuing the recovery of co-evolutionary relations between human settlement and the environment through the reconstruction both of the ‘urbanity’ of places in plural and multi-centred forms and of the relations between urban and rural life-worlds. The experience of the Apulia Regional Landscape Plan is presented as an attempt of policy and planning innovation aimed at supporting re-inhabiting practices consistent with the principles and forms of the urban bioregion. The Plan promotes projects and actions characterised by a multi-scalar dimension, which assume as key factors for a just and regenerative local development the re-establishment of co-evolutionary relationships between human settlement and the geo-environmental system, the mobilisation of local knowledge, and the shaping of a sense of belonging to places and inhabitants’ care practices.

    Beschreibung: In the activity of the librarian, the technical dimension, essential for working with professionalism, cannot ignore or be separated from commitment, attention to civil rights and the way in which they are lived and practiced within the community to which they belong. Ensuring access to information cannot be limited to 'our' library: it must be a responsibility that concerns the territory where we live and operate, looking to our colleagues who may find themselves in a difficult situation and especially to the people who have difficulties in exercising their rights. The hope is that the transmission of registered knowledge will contribute more and more to the freedom, rights and well-being of all. Will it still take time to understand that investing in libraries means investing in democracy, economic development and the quality of life? As always, the reference framework for understanding and interpreting library problems is that of the comparison with international library traditions, starting from the European continent, as the profession of the librarian today has a theoretical framework and an operational dimension of global reach.

    Beschreibung: This text collects the revisions of some of the most significant degree theses written from 2011 to 2015 in the bachelor degree in City, territory and landscape planning and in the Master's degree in City and territory planning and design of University of Florence, Empoli campus. The theses cover the current diversified scenery of problems within the urban planning discipline, using very different methodologies, interpretations and perspectives of analysis. The territory emerging as the protagonist of the young authors' narratives is a complex and multi-layered object; it is constituted by things and relationships, set on the long times of history, aimed towards the present and projected into the future, and it continues to raise their questions, doubts, curiosities and also some fruitful answers. In summary, rather than chances for discussion on a disposable form of knowledge, this works offer chances for reflection and experimentation, and opportunities for the incremental construction of creative solutions by its authors.

In a region like Apulia, which has followed an innovative path in the government of the territory and the landscape, the experience of knowledge and project for the city of Ugento is an opportunity to reflect on how today the construction of the plan can accompany the government of the territory in its development, rather than claiming to direct it, penetrate its policies and interact with its various instruments in a dynamic and even experimental way. In this way the construction of the plan can provide for a system of values to refer to in order to navigate the change and the design vision to be placed at the base of urban policies, tactics, individual interventions, thus coming to be a tool at the service of local development.

On the one hand, it crosses historiography in a declination of temporal measurement (from the long to the short and very short term) that cannot be subsumed under today’s temporal acceleration, wiping out the past to the point of making territories we live in unrecognisable to our very eyes. On the other, it refers to an anthropology focusing on the spatial dimension and aimed at proposing a revolution of the gaze so as to reread eco-territorial dynamics no longer from the centre (cluttered by the rubble of a systemic crisis) but from the margins, to express new modes of neo-communitarian self-government.

    Beschreibung: Eco-territorialism focuses its proposal on the relationship between environmental issues and the territory. For sociology, this is a partly unprecedented challenge. Indeed, environmental sociology has never taken an explicit territorial posture, while territorial sociology has always considered the environment a physical extension that frames human actions. An eco-territorialist sociology, on the other hand, must focus on the logic of ecosystems interacting with society, looking at environmental crises place by place. In the chapter, three sociological perspectives are identified in order to recompose them in an eco-territorial key: Latour and Callon's Actor Network Theory, which reincorporates biophysical worlds and artefacts into agency; Ploeg's rural sociology, which looks at the co-evolution between social and ecological systems; Gough's eco-welfare, which points to a new welfare paradigm capable of sustaining itself outside of growth.

    Beschreibung: By summarising some selected bachelor and master's degree theses, the volume offers an overview of the study activities conducted within the Degree courses in Planning of the University of Florence, Empoli Campus. The different sections constituting the work highlight a multi-scale and multidisciplinary work methodology, which feeds on an approach mainly based on the importance given to the value of places and of specific territorial contexts. The result is an original picture of contributions, representing a potentially innovative way for the comparison of territorial and urban studies with the various operational dilemmas which arise at the intersection between the drafting of policies, the construction of long-lasting territorial projects and the local development guidelines.

    Beschreibung: One of David Sassoli's most outstanding initiatives was the Conference on the Future of Europe, concluded in 2022, which aimed to promote the European construction based on the voices of citizens. Given the Europe's historical relevance in the development of science and technology and my own European experience, I comment on this Sassoli's "political testament", highlighting three major challenges for Europe and arguing that, in addition to science and technology, the future of the European Union must be based on the values ​​he espoused.
