    Le retour de Lyon sous l’autorité royale à la fin des guerres de Religion (1593-1597) (2022)

    Description: Henri Hours' book on the end of the League in Lyon is one of the most important works of 16th century historiography in Lyon, although very few readers have had the opportunity to consult it. This is its main paradox and the challenge of this edition. The thesis was defended at the École Nationale des Chartes in 1951, but it has never been published and, in accordance with the rules of the École, it has never been made available. Only those who knew the author were able to read it, which does not prevent it from appearing in all bibliographies concerning the Wars of Religion. Following his death in 2017 and with the agreement of his family, the Collection Chrétiens & Sociétés has decided to publish this memoir for the first time in order to make it accessible to the public in Lyon and to historians of religious confrontations. Henri Hours meticulously analysed the last years of the League at Lyon, the crucial years 1593-1597. Since 1589, the city had swayed to the side of Catholic intransigence to the point of rejecting its sovereign, Henry IV, and maintaining a costly but necessary war effort in a region crossed by denominational borders. The bishop, Pierre d'Epinac, the consuls of Lyon, the governor of the city, the Savoyard and Spanish spies, but also the street preachers and the little people who were very inclined to be alarmed, were the main actors in these events. Here we touch on the political and religious dimensions of urban history. Through municipal deliberations, correspondence, pamphleteering and some contemporary accounts, Henri Hours unravels the skein of the city's political shift towards submission to the king. By looking back at the writings of some of these actors, notably Pierre Mathieu and Claude de Rubys, he also questions the memory of the event in the consciousness of Lyon.

    Description: Les auteurs de cet ouvrage “ Pierre et Archéologie ”, issu du Colloque international qui s’est tenu à Tautavel (14-15 mai 1998) veulent attirer l’attention sur les nombreux aspects de l’utilisation de la pierre par l’Homme depuis la Préhistoire, et les difficultés pour comprendre et expliquer son identification, son évolution et sa conservation. Mise à part l’utilisation lointaine de la pierre par l’homme préhistorique pour assurer sa survie, il reste le domaine très vaste, plus récent dans le temps, de la pierre de taille utilisée par les hommes. Déjà les gallo-romains se sont servis des pierres dites « du midi » pour des constructions que nous connaissons bien. Mais la pierre n’est pas réservée seulement aux monuments, elle fait partie de la vie quotidienne. En dehors des grands édifices, de nombreuses habitations sont bâties en pierre et souvent leur sol est pavé de pierres. Il y a aussi l’amour de la pierre tout simplement, pour le beau, le toucher : c’est par exemple la sculpture qui agrémente les monuments et même les habitations. Les sarcophages en marbre blanc, sculptés entre la fin de l’Antiquité classique et le Haut Moyen-Age, dont le problème de l’origine est traité dans cet ouvrage, montrent bien la diversité des aspects artistiques que l’Homme a su exploiter. L’ensemble des contributions présentées apporte des données originales sur les méthodes et techniques modernes utilisées pour contribuer à mieux comprendre l’évolution culturelle et artistique de l’humanité, le devenir de la pierre extraite et la restauration des monuments. Ceci montre une fois de plus la nécessité d’une recherche pluridisciplinaire, seule démarche pour assurer la protection et la pérennité de tout ce qui touche notre patrimoine.

    Description: In recent years, through novels and television series ("Vikings", "Millennium", "Borgen" or "Occupied"), Nordic culture has become more visible internationally. At the same time, researchers are questioning what the North is, its conceptualisation, its cultural implications, its geographical characteristics, its social and political challenges. This volume is part of the current debate on the Nordic imaginary based on a notion, Nordicity, which intersects with borealism. Plural and mobile, the North inspires both scriptural and figurative production based on desire, dream, fascination or fantasy. The real, tangible and contingent North is only the apparent surface of a manufactured and invented North. How can we express northernness today? Is a theory of the North possible? This volume attempts to answer these questions by bringing together contributions from researchers in Nordic studies, literature, linguistics and the humanities: each is given the opportunity to define his own conception of Nordicity. Ces dernières années, à travers romans et sériés télévisées ("Vikings", "Millennium", "Borgen" ou "Occupied"), la culture nordique a gagné en visibilité internationale. Simultanément, les chercheurs s'interrogent sur ce qu’est le Nord, sa conceptualisation, ses implications culturelles, ses caractéristiques géographiques, ses enjeux sociaux et politiques. Ce volume s’insère dans le débat actuel sur l’imaginaire nordique à partir d’une notion – la nordicité – qui interagit tout particulièrement avec le boréalisme. Pluriel et mouvant, moteur constant de redéfinitions, le Nord inspire une fabrication tant scripturale que figurale fondée sur le désir, le rêve, la fascination ou le fantasme. Le Nord réel, tangible contingent, n’est que la surface apparente d’un Nord fabriqué et inventé. Comment dire aujourd’hui la nordicité? Une théorie du Nord est-elle possible? The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

Le sujet principal est ici la guerre de Vendée, mais il aborde aussi d’autres conflits intraétatiques : Saint-Domingue devenue Haïti, l’Algérie, la Nouvelle-Calédonie du xvie siècle à nos jours. Ces contributions comparatives passent par l’archéologie, l’ethnologie, la littérature et l’histoire. Ce volume permet une meilleure compréhension de l’histoire et de la mémoire des guerres civiles telles qu’elles ont été pensées, écrites, reconstruites et transmises par les acteurs, les témoins, les contemporains, les historiens. Les douze textes, ponctués par les conclusions de Jean-Clément Martin, permettent de mieux entrer dans la fabrique des mémoires des guerres civiles d’hier et d’aujourd’hui.

    Description: Dans sa Démonolâtrie (1595), le procureur général de Lorraine, Nicolas Remy, estime que « Les sorciers appartiennent la plupart du temps au monde des bourgs et des campagnes. ». Cependant, les vauderies survenues à Lyon et Arras au XVe siècle comme les cas de possession du XVIIe siècle sont autant de témoignages de la présence de la sorcellerie dans les villes européennes. Les études de cas et les essais comparatifs réunis dans ce volume montrent qu'en dépit de la diversité des sociétés urbaines, la sorcellerie apparaît comme un révélateur des enjeux de pouvoir qui traversent les villes modernes.Dans sa postface, Carlo Ginzburg insiste sur la portée d'une approche comparatiste, toujours attentive aux écarts à la norme, et souligne l'importance d’aborder les procès de sorcellerie comme une manifestation particulière des tensions sociales et culturelles.

    Description: Ancient linguistic reflection in India was able to combine the analysis of Sanskrit with the awareness that the language through which this analysis is conducted (Sanskrit) is different from the object it examines. Although this language-tool finds its dimension in the artificial Sanskrit of the sütras - the aphorisms of Påñini's grammar - metalinguistic discourse is not restricted to specialized discourse: common speech abounds in metalinguistic notations. The present work focuses on the testimonies of the grammatical school of Pâininian origin, by trying to retrace the course by which metalanguage left the field of naive linguistics to become an object of the school.

    Description: The exhibition: “La Fisica ad Arcetri. Dalla nascita della Regia Università alle leggi raziali” was organized by the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Florence and by the Florence Section of the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics, in collaboration with the Historical Archive of the Municipality of Florence, the Physical Science and Natural Mathematics Library of the University of Florence, the Science and Technology Foundation, and the “Galileo” Museum of Florence. It was held from May to September 2016 in the Exhibition Hall of the Municipal Historical Archive in via dell'Oriuolo, Florence. The time covered by the exhibition ranges from the birth of the Royal University of Florence (1924) to the enactment of racial laws in Italy by Benito Mussolini’s government (1938). The exhibited material comes from the Municipality's Historical Archive, the Garbasso Archive, the Della Corte Fund, the Department of Physics and Astronomy, the Science and Technology Foundation and from private collections. The catalogue is published as the third volume of the series of publications associated with the magazine «Il Colle di Galileo».

    Description: Terre de mélanges culturels et de politiques coloniales, la Tunisie a attiré de l’Europe des courants d’immigrations aussi bien que des visées impérialistes. La trajectoire des Juifs italiens, dits Livournais, s’inscrit au carrefour de ces axes. Une communauté enracinée en Tunisie depuis le xviie siècle, mais toujours assimilée au monde européen. Une population cosmopolite, mais jalousement attachée à Livourne et à l’Italie. Une double minorité, à l’égard tant de la nombreuse population juive locale que des cent mille émigrés italiens vivant en Tunisie au début du xxe siècle, mais toujours caractérisée par une forte identité collective. Pendant l’entre-deux-guerres, la place sociale de cette communauté fut remise en cause par une série de phénomènes convergents : l’essor du nationalisme tunisien, les tensions diplomatiques italo-françaises, et surtout par la montée au pouvoir du régime fasciste, résolu à encadrer les communautés d’émigration dans sa politique impériale. Sur la base de fonds d’archives et de témoignages inédits, ce travail reconstruit le parcours des Juifs italiens de Tunisie face aux stratégies de fascisation de Rome, en interrogeant les croisements identitaires dans les contextes d’émigration, la question de l’adhésion de masse au totalitarisme et le poids des médiateurs au sein des sociétés coloniales.

    Description: Organized through the initiative of the Ministry of Culture and Communication, the symposium “Lascaux and Preservation Issues in Subterranean Environments” was held in Paris on February 26 and 27, 2009 under the chairmanship of Jean Clottes. It brought together nearly three hundred participants from seventeen countries with the goal of confronting research and interventions conducted in Lascaux Cave since 2001 with the experiences gained in other countries in the domain of preservation in subterranean environments. Twelve presentations addressed questions related to disciplines such as hydrogeology, climatology and microbiology in relation to the protection and valorization of decorated caves. The talks were followed by debates allowing the experts and all other participants to freely express themselves. This volume, which constitutes the proceedings of this symposium, is composed of the studies presented during the sessions and full transcriptions of the debates. It provides both a synthesis of the conservation activities realized at Lascaux between 2001 and 2009 and the state of research and the conditions of the cave as of 2009.

    Description: Ce quatrième et dernier volume du programme L’héritage byzantin en Italie (VIIIe-XIIe siècle), qui cherchait à analyser et à comparer l’évolution des régions autrefois soumises à l’autorité byzantine, de la Vénétie à la Sicile et à la Sardaigne en passant par Ravenne, Rome, Naples, le Salento et la Calabre, a pour thème des realia. On s’est intéressé aux originalités touchant à l’occupation du sol, aux formes de la grande propriété, aux contrats agraires et aux platee (listes de dépendants), enfin à la production et au commerce. La Sicile (sous les dominations byzantine et islamique) et la Sardaigne judicale (souvent négligée) sont bien représentées, à côté des diverses régions continentales ayant dépendu de l’Exarchat. Si, comme on s’y attendait, les évolutions sont dissemblables, les conclusions de Chris Wickham montrent la force de la tradition byzantine à propos de la grande propriété et du commerce ; l’héritage byzantin n’est pas uniforme, mais, même dans ces domaines éloignés de l’idéologie, il a laissé des traces durables.

Pourtant elle connaît une singulière persistance sociale en tant que concept opérationnel qui donne aux hommes une certaine légitimité pour gérer, et souvent détruire, certaines espèces. À l’heure où la France vient d’adopter la loi sur la reconquête de la biodiversité, la question des « nuisibles » reprend une singulière acuité avec la multiplication d’espèces exotiques envahissantes et les vives controverses qui demeurent autour du loup, du renard mais aussi de l’utilisation des insecticides et des herbicides pour se défaire de « gêneurs ». Si la notion de « nuisible » demeure centrale dans la gestion du sauvage par nos sociétés, elle s’avère très variable selon l’époque, l’espèce, le territoire ou le groupe social considéré. Pour dresser un état de la recherche, historiciser cette notion et éclairer les enjeux actuels, il convient de croiser les regards afin de caractériser les différentes conceptions de la notion de « nuisible » qui coexistent actuellement et d’en retracer les origines, tout en s’ouvrant aux acteurs du présent. Ainsi cet ouvrage entend contribuer à explorer les interactions entre les sociétés et la nature, et permettre de mieux saisir leurs coévolutions.

    Description: À un moment où l’on s’efforce de combler le fossé économique, politique et psychologique qui sépare les rives nord et sud de la Méditerranée, il a paru utile de présenter une pratique peu connue - la caravane maritime - qui a, partiellement, joué ce rôle pendant un siècle et demi. Ce vocable quelque peu inattendu désignait la prestation de service que rendirent, de la fin du XVIIe au début du XIXe siècle, les marins européens aux sujets de l’Empire ottoman. Ils assuraient la plupart des liaisons maritimes pour cette immense construction politique à peu près dépourvue de navires de commerce, bien que bordant la majeure partie du littoral méditerranéen. Après avoir exposé les conditions juridiques qui ont encouragé ce type d’association temporaire, Daniel Panzac présente les marins, la pratique quotidienne de la caravane, avant d’évoquer ensuite les affréteurs ottomans. C’est principalement à travers leurs différends que se révèlent les éphémères relations de ces hommes et leur façon de surmonter leur méfiance et leurs préjugés. Ce faisceau dense de liaisons maritimes favorisa la constitution d’un ensemble économique, une « économie-monde », facteur essentiel de cohésion de cet État aussi vaste qu’hétérogène que fut l’Empire ottoman, ensemble dont l’effondrement dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle précéda l’éclatement politique.

    Description: The present study analyzes the historical framework of contemporary Ethiopia. Particular attention is given to the economic and political events from the regime change in 1991 to the death of TPLF leader Meles Zenawi in 2012. In line with the Braudelian historical analysis three aspects will be taken into consideration: the Ethiopian Empire under Haile Selassie’s rule, the Ethiopian Revolution of 1974, with the rise to power of the Soviet-aligned Derg, and the ensuing civil war with the Maoist guerillas of the TPLF. In addition, the TPLF regime will be examined according to its three underlying concepts – revolutionary democracy, ethnic federalism, and developmental state – and defining theories – neo-patrimonialism, vanguard capitalism, and political marketplace.

    Description: Le Nouveau Festin de Pierre est la dernière pièce sur Dom Juan écrite en France au XVIIe siècle, après le chef-d’oeuvre de Molière. Bien que la comparaison avec le Festin de Molière l’ait toujours discrédité, le Nouveau Festin de Rosimond est une pièce remarquable. L’auteur mélange agréablement plusieurs renvois à une tradition donjuanesque qu’il connaissait très bien, mais il élabore aussi une nouveauté : le triplement de Dom Juan, avec l’introduction de deux amis libertins – Dom Lope et Dom Felix – qui sont aussi les maîtres de débauche pour le protagoniste. Ajoutons les nouveautés scénographiques et le succès international de cette pièce, imitée par Thomas Shadwell en Angleterre, pour accroître l’intérêt de cette édition.

    Description: La famille constitue depuis longtemps un objet d’étude privilégié des historiens des sociétés. Ayant abandonné l’attention presque exclusive accordée autre­fois aux seuls lignages aristocratiques voire royaux, cette histoire de la famille a connu depuis un demi-siècle de profonds renouvellements, tant thématiques que méthodologiques. Directement impliquée dans l’histoire quantitative, notamment par le biais de la « reconstruction des familles », la thématique familiale s’est retrouvée au centre de l’histoire des mentalités. Ultérieurement enfin, via l’importation de problématiques venues des autres sciences sociales et le recours à la démarche « micro-historique », la famille s’est muée en un espace social et anthropologique au sein duquel sont mises à jours les dynamiques qui affectent ces réalités familiales. Dans le même temps, ces réflexions sur le passé d’une réalité sociale toujours vivante viennent en écho aux interrogations contemporaines sur le devenir de la famille nucléaire. La « crise » d’un modèle familial pluriséculaire et les recompositions familiales auxquelles elles donnent lieu placent ces réflexions sur la famille au cœur d’un débat de société particulièrement intense. Dans ce contexte qui fait de la famille un sujet d’actualité brûlant, le colloque organisé à Toulouse a voulu dresser un bilan des travaux les plus récents des meilleurs spécialistes du sujet, il s’est inscrit dans une démarche délibérément comparatiste tout en insistant sur les continuités et les ruptures identifiables tant en termes de problématiques, de démarches que de résultats. Compte tenu de la spécificité du laboratoire à l’origine de cette réflexion, le comparatisme concerne essentiellement les espaces français et ibérique, ce dernier étant compris au sens large puisqu’il intègre les sociétés coloniales ibéro-américaines. Dans le même temps, ce colloque a fait le choix de la transdisciplinarité et de la longue durée, depuis le bas Moyen-Âge jusqu’au xxe siècle. Cette longue phase chronologique coïncide avec l’émergence puis le développement de la structure nucléaire, modèle familial précisément en cours de redéfinition aujourd’hui. À son propos, leurs auteurs y confrontent des approches historiques, sociologiques, anthropologiques et juridiques qui toutes éclairent les complexités de cette histoire tout en contextualisant les interroga­tions contemporaines.

L’histoire de leur Castille, les chroniques des rois, les traités, les portraits des hommes illustres qui ont marqué les générations écoulées, tous ces textes sont des messages envoyés à leurs lecteurs, qui ont la charge du royaume ou qui prétendent participer au gouvernement. Pero López de Ayala, Fernán Pérez de Guzmán, Diego de Valera, Pedro Carrillo de Huete, Alfonso de Palencia, Hernando del Pulgar se penchent tour à tour, à la demande de la cour ou de leur pleine initiative, sur le déroulement des règnes qu’ils connaissent, auxquels ils participent, contre lesquels ils ont souvent des reproches à formuler et pour lesquels ils se donnent volontiers le rôle de censeurs. Cette élaboration de l’Histoire peut être suivie dans le présent ouvrage ; l’histoire de la Castille devient un message politique, avec des arguments, des exemples choisis et toujours des réflexions devant servir aux générations futures.

Le recours à ces images maternelles légitime les valeurs qui irriguent les institutions et a des conséquences évidentes sur le lien social. L’ampleur des sources et la qualité des analyses font ressortir des perspectives interdisciplinaires inédites, la psychanalyse constituant le « cadre fantôme » de cette recherche. C’est à une relecture novatrice des univers mentaux d’un long XIXe siècle que cet ouvrage nous convie.

    Description: The fifteenth century is the century of hospital reforms, started in numerous Italian cities in order to overcome the inadequacies of traditional charitable practices of the Middle Ages and to face the social and health emergencies of that period with the help of different tools. Vicenza also participated in the reform process, restructuring the organisation of its care network, especially thanks to the intervention of the urban patriciate, which ruled the government of the major hospitals according to "managerial" criteria. In the fifteenth century the search for the bonum commune (common good) thus found expression in a new and rational way of understanding, financing and dispensing charity, conversing with public and private actors of the urban scene: a new but not so revolutionary way, in which ancient and recent feelings converged, such as Christian pietas, civic religiosity and protection of the social class’ status quo.

    Description: The archeological site of Montcaret consists of the Pars urbana of a large Roman implantation. It is composed of two levels (Early and late roman Empires), themselves divided into several periods. The last period (5th century A.D.) offers the largest basilica room in the region, a triclinium, a pool and some very well preserved mosaics. The site is inhabited again in the Middle Ages, with a Romanesque church and a necropolis. The site has been studied in its diachronic and synchronic context and the Pars agraria close to the estate has deserved a special research. The artifacts found in the excavations (Roman and medieval coins, Roman and medieval, ceramics, architectural fragments, reliquary cross, sarcophagi, perinatal burials) have been the subject of specific studies, each of them carried out by specialists. They are presented in the museum space of the site which can be visited.

    Description: Cet ouvrage aborde la question complexe des motivations de la prénomination à l’époque de la Renaissance. De nombreuses études ont été publiées depuis une quarantaine d’années sur l’anthroponymie française. Les chercheurs se sont appliqués à collecter des données et à établir des statistiques. Mais il ne s’agit plus ici de comptabiliser mais d’expliquer. Pour ce faire, ce livre multiplie les comparaisons. Il étudie les évolutions sur une période longue et compare les choix de prénomination dans différentes régions pour établir une synthèse générale. Il remet en cause les conceptions courantes sur la prénomination et offrent de nouvelles hypothèses explicatives. Il réfute l’idée selon laquelle le nom de baptême était principalement la marque d’une dévotion religieuse et met en avant les ressorts fondamentaux de la prénomination : assurer à l’enfant les meilleures chances de survie, de bonheur et de prospérité et l’intégrer dans un réseau de relations sociales.

The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: L’inceste marque de sa monstruosité les consciences collectives. Cantonné dans la sphère du tabou et de l’infamie, nul ne peut le discuter, nul ne peut le pratiquer. Le phénomène existe pourtant sous différentes formes selon les sociétés dans lesquelles il est rencontré et pensé. En France, au xixe siècle, l’inceste a une histoire. Lorsqu’en 1791 les Constituants décident de le décriminaliser, la société française voit s’ouvrir un siècle de débats qui conduit à une requalification profonde du phénomène et de son imaginaire. L’étude croisée des discours entretenus par les élites souligne les étapes qui ont présidé à la construction de l’inceste criminel. À la fin du siècle, il n’est plus l’apanage des aristocrates décriés par les Lumières mais bien celui d’hommes pauvres, devenus les symboles d’une nouvelle dangerosité. La justice, par l’entrelacement de ses échelles et de ses acteurs, contribue également à fabriquer et à imposer progressivement ce masque sur le phénomène incestueux. Mais l’inceste n’est pas qu’un crime au xixe siècle. En tentant de pénétrer au cœur même des familles, cet ouvrage montre qu’il peut également être une sexualité consentie qui se pratique dans la clandestinité de certains foyers français. Réalité multiforme, interdit plus que tabou, l’inceste mérite en ce sens d’être replacé dans une histoire plus courte que l’intemporalité des anthropologues.

The material conserved in his personal archive is of fundamental importance for a reconstruction, not only of the his scientific career but also of his private life.     Description: Cet ouvrage analyse le devenir d’un « imaginaire raciologique », c’est-à-dire des représentations fondées sur l’idée de l’existence de « races » humaines – ces représentations qui se sont développées, dans le cadre d’une anthropologie classificatoire, au cours du xixe siècle, selon une pensée de type polygéniste, avec les implications racistes qu’elle a pu véhiculer ou légitimer. Cet imaginaire raciologique n’est pas sans contradiction : il postule parfois aussi bien une fixité des « races » qu’une peur qu’elles ne se mélangent. Mais dans un cas comme dans l’autre s’établissent des hiérarchies, mises au service de différents discours de domination et d’exclusion.     Description: "The spatiotemporal conjunction is a fundamental aspect of the juridical reflection on the historicity of law. Despite the fact that it seems to represent an issue directly connected with the question of where legal history is heading today, it still has not been the object of a focused inquiry. Against this background, the book’s proposal consists in rethinking key confluences related to this problem in order to provide coordinates for a collective understanding and dialogue. The aim of this volume, however, is not to offer abstract methodological considerations, but rather to rely both on concrete studies, out of which a reflection on this conjunction emerges, as well as on the reconstruction of certain research lines featuring a spatiotemporal component. This analytical approach makes a contribution by providing some suggestions for the employment of space and time as coordinates for legal history. Indeed, contrary to those historiographical attitudes reflecting a monistic conception of space and time (as well as a Eurocentric approach), the book emphasises the need for a delocalized global perspective. In general terms, the essays collected in this book intend to take into account the multiplicity of the spatiotemporal confines, the flexibility of those instruments that serve to create chronologies and scenarios, as well as certain processes of adaptation of law to different times and into different spaces. The spatiotemporal dynamism enables historians not only to detect new perspectives and dimensions in foregone themes, but also to achieve new and compelling interpretations of legal history. As far as the relationship between space and law is concerned, the book analyses experiences in which space operates as a determining factor of law, e.g. in terms of a field of action for law. Moreover, it outlines the attempted scales of spatiality in order to develop legal historical research. With reference to the connection between time and law, the volume sketches the possibility of considering the factor of time, not just as a descriptive tool, but as an ascriptive moment (quasi an inner feature) of a legal problem, thus making it possible to appreciate the synchronic aspects of the ‘juridical experience’. As a whole, the volume aims to present spatiotemporality as a challenge for legal history. Indeed, reassessing the value of the spatiotemporal coordinates for legal history implies thinking through both the thematic and methodological boundaries of the discipline."

L'étude porte sur la vallée de la Loire, de Nantes, un des premiers ports coloniaux du royaume, à Orléans, premier centre de raffinage. Ce livre éclaire la croissance du trafic ligérien, l'essor des détaillants (limonadiers, épiciers, confiseurs) et surtout la naissance d'une industrie, les raffineries de sucre, qui comptent parmi les premières manufactures agroalimentaires. L'originalité de cet ouvrage est d'envisager la distribution du sucre de manière totale, de l'échelle européenne à l'échelle locale, du port à la boutique et à la table des Français, à la croisée de l'histoire économique, politique, culturelle et sociale.

    Description: This volume presents the recovery, cataloging, and valorization project of the collection donated by the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II (1741-1790) to the Mineralogical Cabinet of the Collegio Nazareno in Rome in 1785. This donation represents, so far, the only geo-mineralogical collection belonging to Joseph II with certainty. The specimen cataloging records, drawn according to the ICCD national catalographic standards for the mineralogical (BNM) and petrographic (BNPE) heritage, are freely available on the Catalogo Generale dei Beni Culturali website. The collection is open to visitors in its permanent exhibition at the Istituto San Giuseppe Calasanzio in Rome. This volume has been realized within the project PANN20.00605 “Dono imperiale. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: In the late Iron Age, the northwest of Gaul is divided into several independent cities. In the framework of this archaeological investigation, eight of them were studied between the Channel and the Atlantic coasts. Contrary to what researchers have long admitted, this synthesis, outcome of a doctoral thesis, highlights the full integration of these western regions into the social processes that mark the end of the Iron Age in Celtic Europe. These processes lead to the development of urbanism and the structuring of territories between the 3th and 1st centuries BC. The approach consists in analyzing the forms and functions of urban areas, but also in studying the religious spaces (sanctuaries), the hillforts and the aristocratic rural settlements. Nowadays, this extensive data compilation makes it possible to reason on the economic, even administrative, links existing between these various types of sites. Lastly, it allows you to reflect about the social structuring of the cities and the evolution of their organizations until the Early Roman Empire.

    Description: Let's try to imagine a world where scientific illiteracy is the exception rather than the rule. That is a world of subjects who are, in the vast majority, informed and aware of the main ongoing scientific debates, and who are capable of critically and independently thinking about them. A world in which everyone could dispose of the resources to develop a thoughtful opinion on cloning techniques, genetically modified organisms, new anti-cancer therapies or even on the origin of life on Earth and the final destiny of the universe. If this world were possible, what would it look like? The scepticism about the feasibility of such a scenario is justified, however it is equally undeniable that during the twentieth century there have been such profound transformations in the relationship between science and public opinion as to make the question at least legitimate and worthy of an answer.

Cette étude d’histoire économique ouvre la voie à une histoire des juifs « désenclavée » et réhabilite l’usure. Alors que balbutie le stéréotype qui transforme le juif en usurier, les prêteurs issus de la communauté hébraïque se révèlent dignes de foi et membres du corps politique.

    Description: Through his literary, historical and political oeuvre, Safvet-beg Bašagić (1870-1934) has formulated the great issues of bosnian-muslim nationalism, at a time when his community retreated from the demands placed upon it by the process of modernisation imposed by the austro-hungarian presence since the Berlin Congres of 1878. Inspired by ottoman, croat and serb nationalist movements of the 19th century, he attempted to establish an identity that was distinct from those of these movements by affirming the religious and cultural specificity of his fellow believers and compatriots. These engagements were intimately connected to the agrarian question in Bosnia-Herzegovina: Bašagić acted as a conservator, stressing that ownership of land was a historical right of the local beylicat, to which he belonged. During his lifetime he did not have the audience for which he would have wished; but the essential elements of his theses, despite their lack of scientific rigor, have flourished today.

    Description: Ce livre s’inscrit clans la série des recherches suscitées par l’enquête sur le personnel parlementaire de la Troisième République, entreprise par l’URA 1016 du CNRS, au sein du Centre d’histoire du xixe siècle qui asso­cie les Universités de Paris I et de Paris IV. Cet ouvrage porte sur une catégorie de sénateurs aujourd’hui oubliée : les inamovibles, nommés d’abord par l’Assemblée nationale, puis par le Sénat, conformément à la loi constitutionnelle du 24 février 1875. Jusqu’à la révision constitutionnelle de 1884, qui mit fin à ce mode de désignation, il y eut cent seize sénateurs inamovibles. Les diverses contributions réunies dans la première partie apportent des éléments de réflexion sur les origines sociales et la formation, les alliances et réseaux familiaux, les attitudes philosophiques et spirituelles, les liens avec le monde militaire, le barreau, le monde académique. Il fallait évo­quer leur enracinement provincial, leur place dans les conseils du gouver­nement, leur comportement politique grâce à quelques scrutins qui per­mettent au reste de décrire tendances et groupes dans le Sénat des débuts de la République. Enfin, les obsèques des sénateurs inamovibles et la mémoire qui les accompagne constituent comme le tombeau de ces « immortels » de la République. Les profils biographiques présentés ensuite trouveront sûrement l’attention de tous ceux qui s’intéressent aux élites socio-politiques de la France contemporaine. Ce livre éclaire une institution rarement étudiée et un personnel mal connu, qui doit tant à la France des notables, une France de propriétaires et de juristes, attachée au libéralisme.

    Description: This work outlines the phenomenon of conversions to Catholicism which took place in Florence between the 17th and 18th century, and starts by reconstructing the history of the House of Catechumens. In the second half of the 17th century, thanks to a noblewoman from Florence’s bequest, the Institute offered hospitality to "infidels" of all origins, and the number of conversions increased considerably. Such liberality ended up causing a serious economic crisis, which the Lorraine Grand Dukes tried to solve in the 18th century by restricting the field of action to Tuscan subjects only. However, there was no lack of abuse and interference by clergymen, especially towards Jews.

    Description: 1938 in Italy is marked by the introduction of the racial laws which ejected Jews from schools and universities, preceding similar measures in Germany. The aim of the author is to illustrate the debates in parliament around the Day of Memory and on holocaust denial before dealing with the events of 1938, in order to underline their contemporary significance and to interpret them as linked and not separable. After showing the progress that has been made in terms of historical research and the difficulties that the political world has experienced in taking this work into account, the volume examines the losses in qualitative terms in Italian university teaching and the huge difficulties encountered by professors who had lost their posts and struggled to return to their former positions. The case of Florence is studied closely within the framework of the transformations to university institutions which took place during the Fascist period. The indifference or the silence of the intellectuals, including Gentile, is underlined.

    Description: The volume, dedicated to the 44th International Conference of the Italian Union for Drawing, investigates the theme of ‘Transitions’, which particularly effectively represents our time and the current condition of the discipline of Drawing. The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: Comme des milliers de braves des armées tricolores entre 1792 et 1815, Théophile-Malo Corret de La Tour d’Auvergne est mort au champ d’honneur. Mais « premier grenadier des armées de la République », il fit partie de ceux qui se virent décerner la qualité de héros. Réputé comme savant et admiré pour ses vertus de son vivant même, il n’était pas, c’est vrai, un soldat commun. Ce livre ne consiste pas en une biographie du célébré. Son objet est sa célébration même, depuis la Révolution française jusqu’à la Grande Guerre. Pour cela, parmi les outils fournis par les sciences sociales il manie plus spécialement celui de l’admiration. Ainsi nous comprenons pourquoi la gloire du « petit héros » La Tour d’Auvergne n’a cessé de grandir durant tout le xixe siècle. Héros célébré par la « grande patrie », comme par sa « petite patrie », et par son régiment, La Tour d’Auvergne est aussi un cas à partir duquel la construction nationale à l’œuvre peut se voir et se comprendre. Ce cas permet également de décrire le phénomène social de l’admiration, si prégnant que la société dans laquelle il se développa est ici qualifiée de « société d’admiration ». La Tour d’Auvergne est aujourd’hui bien oublié. L’ouvrage cherche donc enfin à comprendre comment et pourquoi l’admiration pour les héros s’est amoindrie, a cessé, voire a transformé certains modèles d’hier en repoussoirs à déboulonner.

Mais de quoi parle-t-on au juste? « Je connais tel élu et il a le bras long, il pourra me trouver une place à la mairie! » Si la phrase est courante, quelles réalités et quels fantasmes recouvre-t-elle précisément ? Alors que le phénomène du clientélisme a déjà fait l’objet de plusieurs études en sociologie et sciences politiques, cette pratique originale a moins retenu l’attention des historiens du politique. Spécialiste de l’histoire politique française contemporaine, Julie Bour entend étudier les acteurs, causes, modalités et limites du clientélisme via une approche quantitative originale et inédite, reposant sur l’exploitation statistique de corpus importants de courriers de recommandation, dépassant parfois les milliers de lettres entre les élus et leurs administrés et portant sur des dossiers sensibles, symboliques ou plus prosaïques (emplois, décorations, service militaire, aide sociale, affaires communales, etc.). Elle concentre son analyse sur un espace test particulier qui est celui de la Lorraine et l’appréhende sur le temps long qui va de la IIIe République aux années 2000. Au travers d’études de cas portant sur des élus célèbres (Louis Jacquinot, Pierre Messmer, François Guillaume, Christian Pierret) ou plus anonymes (Jean Bernard, Jules Develle, André Savard) qui représentent l’ensemble des courants politiques, le clientélisme apparaît pour ce qu’il est réellement : une pratique très répandue (et non limité à un Sud méditerranéen arriéré), qui structure la vie politique locale, mobilise tout un réseau d’intercesseurs relais, crée des solidarités fines entre l’élu et les électeurs, et joue un rôle parfois déterminant dans l’élection et la longévité politique de certains parlementaires. Cette pratique, ancrée sur la durée, institutionnalisée au point d’être déculpabilisée, interroge la démocratie dans ses limites en termes de corruption et de clientélisme.

    Description: Cette recherche étudie les modalités d’approvisionnement de la ville de Venise en produits de la mer (poissons, crustacés et coquillages) au XVIIIe siècle, dans un système qui concerne à la fois des acteurs, des pratiques, des espaces et des modes de gouvernement. L’analyse prend comme point de départ les espèces, leurs lieux de croissance, les rythmes de production, puis l’exploitation du poisson qui devient une ressource alimentaire pour la ville. À Venise, l’ensemble des habitants, des patriciens aux membres du popolo les plus fragiles, consomme des produits de la mer quotidiennement et sous toutes leurs formes. Cette place remarquable du poisson dans l’alimentation a entraîné, chez les acteurs impliqués dans ce système, pêcheurs, marchands et gouvernants, d’intenses réflexions autour de la propriété, de la gestion, de l’exploitation et de la protection des espèces. L’étude se situe par conséquent à la croisée de plusieurs champs historiques (histoire environnementale, histoire sociale et histoire des institutions) et emprunte également certaines de ses approches à l’histoire économique et à l’histoire urbaine. L’enjeu est de déterminer comment se crée et se négocie un système de gestion et d’exploitation d’une ressource, impliquant des savoirs politiques, des savoirs techniques et des usages particuliers élaborés dans des milieux lagunaires et maritimes. Cette interaction est en pleine évolution au XVIIIe siècle, à une période où les mécanismes marchands et économiques sont soumis à des évolutions de conception profondes. Les ressources de la mer n’échappent pas à ces questionnements et la materia del pesce, expression utilisée par les magistrats vénitiens, devient un espace de négociation, mais également de lutte, entre les acteurs du système et les gouvernants dans la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle.

    Description: Il y a près d’un siècle, les premières réunions de la Jeunesse ouvrière chrétienne française se tenaient à Lille. Assemblés autour d’un prêtre, de jeunes hommes s’engageaient pour rendre aux ouvriers leur fierté et leur apporter la foi. Bien vite se sont organisées des associations comparables pour les jeunes garçons et filles issus d’autres catégories sociales. Ces mouvements n’ont pas permis la rechristianisation espérée, mais ils sont devenus de formidables vecteurs d’éducation populaire ; ils ont bouleversé la vie de plusieurs générations de militants et ont formé nombre de cadres pour la société et pour l’Église. Cette dernière contrôlait et appuyait cette mobilisation des laïcs, qu’elle appelait « Action catholique spécialisée ». Mais ce terme traduit-il vraiment la diversité des expériences vécues à la base ? Et comment expliquer l’épuisement de ce dispositif si performant jusqu’aux Trente Glorieuses ? Comment ces bouleversements ont-ils été vécus ? Où les énergies et les convictions sociales, politiques et religieuses se sont-elles ensuite réinvesties ? En abordant ces questions, cet ouvrage – qui mêle les analyses scientifiques aux témoignages d’anciens militants et aumôniers – permet de mieux comprendre les profondes mutations de la société française, du militantisme et du christianisme.

    Description: Drawing on different disciplinary and historiographic traditions, the volume offers a series of summaries and thematic insights, functional to contextualising the peculiar case of the episcopate of Bobbio, founded in 1014 in the Piacenza Apennines as a development of the famous monastery of San Colombano. The considerable documentary source available thanks to the recent reorganization of the diocesan archives, which made it possible to illustrate the cathedral library as well, required an overall presentation and specific attention to the constitutive acts of the new institution. The deepening of the historical context, within which the subsequent diocesan story unfolds, was conducted in relationship with the monastery and with a selection of the nearby cities. The analysis of the settlement dynamics of the Bobbian center and of the structural developments of the church and of the episcopal complex are counterpointed by both in-depth analyses aimed at the organization of the territory, captured in its civil, religious, welfare articulations, and treatments of cultural and liturgical components that animate this Church.

    Description: The volume, dedicated to the 44th International Conference of the Italian Union for Drawing, investigates the theme of ‘Transitions’, which particularly effectively represents our time and the current condition of the discipline of Drawing. The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: Dresser pour le xxe siècle un bilan de l’Église catholique en France sur le plan de la morale sexuelle, tel est le projet de cet ouvrage. Le xxe siècle se décompose en trois moments évidents : le triomphe de la morale sexuelle traditionnelle dans la première moitié du siècle, avec une valorisation démesurée de la chasteté et de la fécondité du mariage. Le deuxième moment entre 1950 et 1978 est une longue période de crise de la doctrine traditionnelle que Paul VI tenta en vain d’étouffer. Mais le célibat sacerdotal et la condamnation de l’avortement et de l’homosexualité sont remis en cause. Cette dernière question qui n’émerge que tardivement sera abordée grâce au témoignage exceptionnel d’un prêtre homosexuel et pédophile. La tentative de Jean-Paul II de restaurer la morale sexuelle traditionnelle constitue une troisième phase. Comme chacun le sait, le pape n’a pas ramené les fidèles catholiques au respect des enseignements d’une éthique considérée par eux comme archaïque. Entre la doctrine intransigeante du magistère et des laïcs de plus en plus insoumis, les théologiens ont tenu une position stratégique : ont-ils contribué à renforcer et légitimer l’autorité du pape polonais ou préparé des accommodements tels que le pape François les propose aujourd’hui, voire des changements plus radicaux de la doctrine morale catholique ? Pour l’avenir du catholicisme, dans le monde développé du moins, la question sexuelle tient une place critique. L’Église est-elle capable d’abandonner ses « lois » de morale sexuelle ?

C’est cet aspect méconnu de la monarchie française que nous dévoile Pascale Mormiche avec l’éducation d’une quarantaine de princes, ces jeunes garçons qui, du xviie au xviiie siècle, étaient destinés à devenir de futurs rois ou des chefs de famille tels que les Conti, les Condé et les Orléans. De leur quatrième année chez les « femmes » à leur passage chez les « hommes » à sept ans jusqu’à l’âge du mariage, cette somme nous fait revivre leur apprentissage au quotidien. Cet ouvrage comporte trois volets : l’étude du personnel, précepteurs ou gouverneurs qui ont la lourde tâche de façonner ce prince idéal, puis l’analyse des principes éducatifs et des moyens mis en œuvre, avant de décrire la « fabrication » pratique d’un prince, tant sur le plan des vertus, des savoirs que dans sa manière d’être. Une somme magistrale sur la formation des souverains, une plongée dans les coulisses de la monarchie. Où l'on découvre que, loin d’avoir été négligée, l’éducation des princes fut l’objet d’une méticulosité remarquable et constituait une véritable affaire d’État.

    Description: Au début du xviie siècle, un polémiste averti lançait à son auditoire, mi-protestant mi-catholique, cette sentence lapidaire : « Aujourd’huy, les disputes se réduisent à disputer comment il faut disputer. » Pour notre controversiste désabusé, dans ces rencontres entre théologiens, les moyens mangeaient la fin, les débats s’éternisant dans d’interminables disputes sur les conditions de la dispute. C’est de cette remarque – récurrente – qu’ont germé l’idée de ce livre et la volonté d’élargir le questionnement à des époques plus anciennes : à quoi bon ces rencontres répétées entre théologiens quand la conversion de l’adversaire semble si rarement le fruit des débats ? À nos yeux, l’amer constat que dresse ce théologien – des rencontres interreligieuses infécondes – n’est pas à attribuer à une quelconque myopie. Ce qu’il pointe est plus profond, plus essentiel. Il signale des enjeux alternatifs, il met sur la piste d’autres fonctions, moins évidentes ou moins assumées, des disputes interreligieuses. De ces grands débats, qui pensait vraiment sortir gagnant ? qui pouvait sérieusement se dire convaincu ? À partir de là, que recherchaient les acteurs de ces multiples scènes sans issue ?

    Description: Il existe au moins trois bonnes raisons d’étudier la sociabilité associative rurale en Mayenne entre les années 1830 et les années 1930. Premièrement, la sociabilité est un concept qui, après avoir connu un grand succès en sciences sociales il y a une quarantaine d’années puis avoir été considéré comme passé de mode, mérite qu’on y revienne dans une approche culturelle et sociale. Deuxièmement, le monde associatif dans les campagnes françaises au xixe siècle et au début du xxe siècle est un sujet encore trop peu étudié et auquel il reste à accorder toute la place qui lui revient dans les mutations de l’époque contemporaine, au même titre que l’école. Troisièmement, la France de l’Ouest est un espace injustement disqualifié par l’historiographie pour ce qui relève de la vie sociale. Des sociétés littéraires aux clubs sportifs, en passant par les cercles, les sociétés de cure, les corps de sapeurs-pompiers, les sociétés musicales, les patronages catholiques, les associations conscriptives, les amicales d’anciennes et d’anciens élèves et celles d’anciens combattants, il est alors possible de saisir comment, à l’époque contemporaine, une culture formalisée, incarnée par la sociabilité associative, émerge face à une culture coutumière, moins « civilisée », celle des veillées et des assemblées villageoises. Ce qui se joue là n’est pas tant affaire de remplacement que d’acculturation.

    Description: Considéré d’habitude comme le « père » de l’anarchisme français, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon entretient un rapport ambivalent avec la création littéraire. Cet essai retrace tout d’abord la relation de Proudhon à la littérature, telle qu’elle apparaît à travers ses ouvrages. Il analyse ensuite les discours tenus dans ses quatre journaux sur les triomphes du roman-feuilleton, visant la conception d’un feuilleton révolutionnaire capable de diffuser auprès du lectorat populaire, par le biais de la fiction, les idées et les théories qui aideront à son affranchissement. Une présentation des romans-feuilletons parus dans les diverses incarnations du journal Le Peuple est suivie par une étude plus approfondie de l’un d’entre eux, le roman Le Mont Saint-Michel, qui narre les aventures d’un groupe de républicains lors du célèbre épisode de la barricade du cloître Saint-Merry, clou tragique de l’insurrection avortée de 1832. Convoquant de nombreux auteurs connus (Michelet, Stendhal, Victor Hugo et Alexandre Dumas père) et oubliés, cette analyse veut offrir une réflexion sur la nature du roman historique et de l’écriture historiographique pendant une période clef pour leur développement.

À l’initiative de l’ACER (Amis des combattants volontaires en Espagne républicaine) et de partenaires institutionnels et universitaires, l’ouvrage ¡Solidarias! met en valeur cette mobilisation solidaire, humanitaire, militaire et sanitaire de centaines d’étrangères. Organisé par thématiques, il couvre de nombreux aspects tels que les enjeux historiographiques du sujet, l’observation comparée des femmes dans les différents contingents de volontaires et l’engagement féminin au sein de la mobilisation transnationale autour de l’Espagne, ainsi que la partition des intellectuelles étrangères. Il est proposé ici une mise à jour essentielle de la recherche historique sur la place des femmes dans les solidarités antifascistes et de leur rôle dans le volontariat international.

    Description: Ce livre aborde l’art funéraire du XIIIe siècle par un biais original. Il s’intéresse à la manière dont les Frères Prêcheurs et Mineurs ont traité les sépultures de papes et de cardinaux dans leur discours, à la fois littéraire et monumental, entre 1250 et 1304. L’analyse des tombes de prélats situées dans des églises mendiantes, réparties entre l’Italie et la France, révèle une intervention des frères dans les choix d’emplacement, de forme et d’iconographie. Il ressort ainsi de l’enquête que les Frères Prêcheurs ont eu une politique de leur espace davantage planifiée que les Frères Mineurs, puisqu’ils n’acceptèrent dans le chœur de leurs églises que les sépultures de prélats appartenant à l’ordre, surmontées d’une plate-tombe. De leur côté, les Frères Mineurs ont construit un discours original sur leur rôle dans l’accompagnement des mourants, à la fois dans l’iconographie et dans la littérature homilétique. Enfin, ce livre accorde une place importante aux procédés mis en œuvre par les mendiants pour « créer » des saints parmi les prélats qui étaient issus de l’ordre ou qui en étaient des bienfaiteurs.

Ce volume, qui a privilégié une démarche pluridisciplinaire, à la fois synchronique et diachronique, est composé de dix-neuf articles dont l’objectif a été de saisir le lien existant entre la justice et le récit en France, en Italie et en Espagne du XIVe siècle au XIXe siècle. L’intérêt a été prêté aux usages de la justice et de l’écriture, en passant du récit judiciaire au récit fictionnel, de l’espace privé à l’espace public, le tribunal étant l’espace où la parole se trouve finalement libérée.

Loin d’être un spectacle devenu un sport ou un sport devenu spectacle, la boxe est dès ses débuts doublement codifiée : pensée et structurée comme un sport, elle est aussi portée et mise en scène comme un spectacle, ces deux dynamiques étant indissociables. Ensemble, promoteurs de spectacles, dirigeants de fédérations, journalistes, managers et boxeurs participent à la structuration d’un marché des spectacles pugilistiques inséré dans un tissu de relations avec d’autres grandes villes européennes. À l’aube de la Première Guerre mondiale, bénéficiant de conditions économiques et sociales spécifiques, la scène parisienne s’impose progressivement comme un des foyers les plus actifs de la boxe, lui donnant la forme d’un spectacle à la fois mondain et populaire, avant de se transformer après-guerre. Comprendre l’historicité des spectacles pugilistiques revient alors à prendre au sérieux l’expression même de « spectacle sportif ».

    Description: The volume, dedicated to the 44th International Conference of the Italian Union for Drawing, investigates the theme of ‘Transitions’, which particularly effectively represents our time and the current condition of the discipline of Drawing. The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: Le rite, par la transcendance qu’il manifeste et la pérennité apparente de son déroulement, semble particulièrement adapté à l’analyse des sociétés occidentales d’Ancien Régime dont les normes et les coutumes judiciaires, en particulier, reposaient sur un ensemble de gestes et de paroles codifiés, mêlant les domaines sacré et profane. Objets d’un renouveau historiographique récent, les rituels sont cependant désormais perçus par les historiens tout à la fois comme un outil de restauration du lien social et comme une forme du langage politique. Les études réunies dans ce volume, fruit de la collaboration d’historiens médiévistes et modernistes pour la plupart spécialistes de l’Italie pré-moderne, invitent ainsi le lecteur à porter la réflexion sur le terrain plus politique de l’affirmation de la souveraineté ; en allant au-delà des idées reçues sur le caractère terrifiant des rituels judiciaires, en tissant des comparaisons avec le royaume de France, du bas Moyen Âge jusqu’à la Révolution, elles montrent comment, à partir de la fin de l’époque médiévale, rituel et discours politique s’épaulent l’un l’autre et contribuent à la fabrique du consensus sur lequel repose l’acte de gouvernement. Le rituel, loin de perdre de son importance, se transforme alors en un langage politique efficace qui offre au Prince les moyens de « négocier » l’exercice de son autorité.

    Description: Soigner les pauvres, telle est la vocation de milliers de jeunes femmes qui, tout au long du xixe siècle, prennent le voile en France et concrétisent ainsi un désir de vie religieuse et de service. Cet engagement ouvre aux femmes des voies pour s’affirmer hors de la famille, dans l’espace public et le monde du travail. Infirmières ou pharmaciennes, responsables de services d’hôpitaux et d’hospices, ou gardes-malades à domicile, ce sont les « bonnes » sœurs du xixe siècle. Figures de la charité, elles sont aussi les chevilles ouvrières du système public de santé dont elles accompagnent la médicalisation. Dans une société confrontée à une nouvelle pauvreté massive et alors que l’Église catholique s’inquiète de la déchristianisation populaire, les sœurs soignantes répondent aux attentes sociales et sanitaires, religieuses et morales de leur temps. La laïcisation républicaine signe-t-elle leur disparition ? Rien n’est moins sûr à en regarder leur présence dans Paris au début du xxe siècle. S’appuyant sur de nombreuses archives des couvents et des institutions hospitalières, cette enquête questionne la vocation des sœurs soignantes dans leur quotidien auprès des pauvres de la capitale. Elle propose une histoire du care qui éclaire les enjeux profanes et spirituels de la relation de soin.

    Description: Villes-lumières, capitales du monde, Paris et New York ont accueilli, de la fin du XIXe siècle à la veille de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, des centaines de milliers d’Italiens venus se faire les forçats de l’industrialisation triomphante. Aux marges des métropoles, les quartiers ouvriers de La Villette et d’East Harlem ont vu s’épanouir puis se dissoudre des territoires italiens, au gré de l’odyssée de cet « Ulysse collectif » que fut l’Italie à l’ère industrielle. De cette vague migratoire sans précédent sont nées des images multiples, du musicien des rues au maçon inégalable, de la couturière à domicile au journaliste antifasciste. Au-delà de ces figures, l’appropriation de l’espace local, les inerties et les innovations affectant les structures familiales et le monde du travail, les modes de sociabilité ou encore les combats politiques constituent autant de prismes d’observation des migrants dans leurs espaces d’accueil. L’opposition, devenue classique, entre le « modèle » d’intégration français universaliste et le « modèle » américain aux rapports sociaux nécessairement ethnicisés, est ici réinterrogée : la comparaison met en lumière les dissemblances fondamentales en termes de contexte migratoire, de rythmes d’urbanisation et d’évolution du marché du travail, mais également les nombreuses analogies dans les processus d’insertion et d’acculturation à l’œuvre à Paris et à New York. Puisant dans les archives françaises, italiennes et américaines, ce livre nous donne à voir l’histoire du corps à corps entre les hommes et les lieux qu’ils ont investis. Dans une époque marquée au fer du nomadisme international, l’histoire de cette migration, désormais close, est un outil précieux pour comprendre l’un des phénomènes clés du monde contemporain.

    Description: The book analyses the history of the Jesuat congregation, highlighting the elements of connection and comparison with the social contexts, then describing the origin and the most ancient events of the female branch of the congregation, and the memory of the meeting between the "founder" of the Jesuats and the "foundress" of the Gesuate. The iconographic memory of the initiator of the congregation, Giovani Colombini, the collection of the lauds of the Jesuat Bianco da Siena, and the fortune of the 15th-century Life of Giovanni Colombini, written by Feo Belcari, are also investigated. Then the research reconstructs the constellation of groups, religious experiments and bearers of ideas and devotions that were linked to the Jesuats and, in particular, to the convents of Milan, Siena, Lucca, Venice and Rome and the sanctuaries managed by the congregation. The congregational sociability is analysed along its lines: the practice of work as pharmacists and the cultivation of spiritual friendships with prominent people such as the Countess of Guastalla, Lodovica Torelli. Finally, the erudite use of Colombini's Epistolario as a language text is studied. The volume closes with a documentary appendix on the Jesuat convent of Chiusi.

En s’appuyant sur l’étude d’archives restées jusqu’ici inexplorées et sur des entretiens inédits, Compagnons de lutte s’attache au travail de sept critiques et historiens de l’art espagnols qui ont pris une part extraordinairement active à la vie intellectuelle et politique de leur pays dans les années 1960 : ils publient, éditent, traduisent, ils organisent des expositions, des débats, des rencontres. Grâce à la complicité nouée avec Giulio Carlo Argan et Umberto Eco en Italie, Adolfo Sánchez Vázquez au Mexique, Gérald Gassiot-Talabot, Pierre Restany et le Salon de la Jeune Peinture à Paris, ils s’approprient les théories et les tendances artistiques circulant à ce moment-là en Europe et sur le continent américain, en les adaptant avec succès aux conditions spécifiques de l’Espagne franquiste.     Description: La léproserie Saint-Lazare, signalée pour la première fois en 1122, était située à proximité de la ville de Paris, dans le faubourg Saint-Laurent. Elle devint en 1632 le berceau de la congrégation de la Mission que saint Vincent de Paul avait fondée quelques années auparavant. D’imposants bâtiments furent alors construits pour abriter une importante communauté. La petite église gothique accolée aux nouveaux bâtiments reçut la tombe du saint fondateur, devenant un haut lieu de pèlerinage que des tableaux de grands maîtres devaient dignifier. La maison et son clos attenant, qui comptait encore 52 hectares de terres en 1789, étaient devenus un domaine préservé dans un Paris toujours plus densément peuplé. Par la suite, cet espace subit des transformations marquantes au cours des xixe et xxe siècles. Accueillant d’importants projets de lotissement dès la Restauration (Nouveau Quartier Poissonnière), ce quartier situé près de la gare du Nord fut l’objet, sous le Second Empire, de réaménagements dont James de Rothschild est le principal acteur. Transformée tour à tour en prison puis en hôpital, la maison survécut aux aléas de l’histoire jusqu’à la démolition partielle des bâtiments en 1940. Seule la nouvelle chapelle et l’infirmerie bâties par Louis-Pierre Baltard témoignent encore aujourd’hui de l’existence du clos Saint-Lazare. Une infirmerie récemment restaurée par la Ville de Paris et qui abrite depuis 2015 la médiathèque Françoise- Sagan. C’est non pas tant l’histoire de la prison pour femmes qui vit passer Louise Michel et Mata Hari que ce livre tente d’éclaircir, que celle de la maison Saint-Lazare et de son clos et, à travers elle, l’économie de la maison mère d’une des principales congrégations de la France d’Ancien Régime et son adaptation successive à différents usages.

    Description: In a perspective of local history that combines problem analysis with a reconstruction accessible even to non-specialists, this book addresses the economy, society and institutions of a rural community of the Tuscan Apennines. The community of Raggiolo is portrayed over a long span of time ranging from the late centuries of the Middle Ages up to the end of the eighteenth century. We are thus offered a picture of the Casentino mountains which reveals - in the centuries-old intertwining of mountain economy, social equality, sharing of the management of the local administration and the goods belonging to the collectivity - one of the main reasons for the resistance to change which was to mark the end of the ancien regime.
    Description: In una prospettiva di storia locale che intreccia l'analisi problematica alla ricostruzione accessibile anche ai non specialisti, il volume studia economia, società, istituzioni di una comunità rurale dell'Appennino toscano. La comunità di Raggiolo viene colta in una lunga durata che dai secoli finali del Medioevo si protrae fino alla fine del Settecento. In tal modo viene offerto un quadro della montagna casentinese che coglie nel secolare intreccio fra economia montana, eguaglianza sociale, condivisione della gestione dell'ammistrazione locale e dei beni appartenenti alla collettività, uno dei principali motivi della resistenza al cambiamento che segnerà la fine dell'antico regime.

    Description: On connaît bien le commissaire de police du xxe siècle, devenu une figure familière grâce à la fiction, dans la littérature d’abord, au cinéma et à la télévision ensuite. On connaît beaucoup moins bien son devancier du xixe siècle, mal vu par ses contemporains et négligé par les historiens. Il ne correspond pourtant que peu à l’image du froid bureaucrate à laquelle on l’a souvent réduit. Si, contrairement à l’inspecteur ou au « limier » de la Sûreté, il n’a alors guère sollicité l’imaginaire, ce fonctionnaire moderne a constitué à partir de la célèbre loi de février 1800 (28 pluviôse an VIII) un rouage essentiel de la construction de l’État. Au contact de citadins de plus en plus nombreux, il a été un agent décisif de l’acculturation à la norme et à l’autorité, gérant au jour le jour les transgressions ordinaires, contribuant à l’édification d’un ordre quotidien. Homme de l’entre-deux — entre pouvoir central et pouvoir local, entre État et société, élites sociales et petit peuple urbain, politisation et professionnalisation —, il résume et accompagne bien des contradictions du siècle. Cet ouvrage collectif, dirigé par Dominique Kalifa (Paris 1) et Pierre Karila-Cohen (Rennes 2), est le premier livre entièrement consacré à ce personnage méconnu qu’il étudie en un long xixe siècle, de la Révolution à la Grande Guerre. Aussi attentif aux origines sociales des commissaires qu’à leurs itinéraires, à leurs pratiques professionnelles ou à leurs conditions de vie, il offre aussi une ample sélection de documents, pour partie inédits, qui témoignent de l’activité quotidienne de ces policiers, appelés à devenir une des figures majeures de notre contemporain.
