    Description: Jan Walravens (1920-1965) played a central role in Flemish literature as he introduced and facilitated literary experiments after the second world war. He was a leading essayist and literary critic, who wrote thousands of reviews showing the younger generation the way to French existentialism and to the international avant-garde. In addition to novels and shorter fiction, he published in-depth philosophical essays on Kierkegaard, Sade and Sartre. His international network of artistic relations turned him into a central figure in the Flemish literary world, a position he held until his untimely death at the age of forty-five. Jan Walravens and the Experiment presents ten essays that chart the various aspects of Walravens’ immense activity: his philosophical thinking on Sade, his relation with the visual arts, his position as an avant-gardist, his defense of poetry old and new, his view on the French nouveau roman, his novels, and his propagation of a new kind of literary diary. The authors have used the Walravens archive and unearthed some material that has never before been brought to the public’s attention, most notably the facsimile of a ‘cadavre exquis’ Walravens created with Albert Bontridder and Florent Welles.

    Description: The author identifies selected aspects of the history of attention and exposes the peculiar relation between philosophy and literature against this background. The task of describing the world, not finished by phenomenology, is taken up by attentive poetry: it can complete the project of portraying the visible world, while keeping the rules of perceptive faith, but also being mindful of the constraints of language at the same time. After breaking contact between word and object, the poet becomes the one who brings the spirit of mankind closer to the world. In the context of twentieth-century dilemmas and projections, attention turns out to be not only a simple consequence of a certain aesthetic choice, but instead, choosing attention gains a crucial importance, rendering it a tool of re-vindicating the lost reality. Attentive poetry, that is such poetry, which does not allow itself to get carried away with language in whichever direction, but tames its anarchy, and does not accept a finished world, rejecting the temptation of relying on easy knowledge, is complemented by attentive reflection in this study: a reflection which is not prone to putting too much faith in the exclusivity of its own accomplishments.     Description: This volume comprises texts created on the basis of three-fold meetings: the first kind were constituted by lectures led by invited guests, representing various fields and areas of research, which, in some necessary simplification, can be divided into historiography (Ewa Domańska), philosophy (Agata Bielik-Robson), literary and memory studies (Michael Rothberg), and philosophy of literature (Michał Paweł Markowski). The lectures were accompanied by workshops, whose leaders present their texts in the second part of the work, and the third part is made up of notes from panel talks. As per the nature of these types of sessions, they present themselves as highly intense (various meetings from morning until evening), as well as showing the unavoidable variety in outlooks, which is one of the major advantages of such events. Another advantage is a slightly more ‘personalist’ encounter, not so much with text, but with the figure of an author, and thus also with the personality of a researcher. What became the idea bringing all these activities together was memory, understood and treated in very different ways. The variety of starting points and views on the forms and places of the functioning of memory then transformed itself into an abundance of experiences of the ‘originators’ and the richness of feelings (also of those imprinting themselves in memory) of the ‘receivers’.

    Description: De gesproken taal komt vóór de geschreven taal, zowel bij het taallerende kind als in de geschiedenis van de mensheid. De homo loquens was er eerst, pas veel later werd hij ook homo scribens. Daarom beschouwt de taalwetenschap de gesproken taal ook als haar primaire object van onderzoek. We, de taalgebruiker maar ook de taalwetenschapper, zijn echter zo vertrouwd met de geschreven taal, dat we de gesproken taal steeds waarnemen door de bril van die geschreven taal. Dat heeft tot gevolg dat we allerlei kenmerken van de geschreven taal op de gesproken taal projecteren. Zo zouden letters corresponderen met afzonderlijke klanken en zouden zinnen gedachten uitdrukken. In dit boek worden vraagtekens geplaatst bij deze aannames die we voor 'natuurlijk' houden maar die in feite 'cultuurlijk' zijn. Het boek laat ook zien hoe onze visie op het ontstaan van het schrift en op het proces van leren lezen en schrijven door de schriftelijke bril gekleurd wordt. Dat maakt dit boek tegelijk een kritische reflectie op de taalwetenschap en haar geschiedenis.

    Description: Alongside Bentham the guardian of the weak and the subordinate, sensitive to other’s suffering and deeply engaged in the fight for a better future and a more just legal system, there also exists a Bentham the unmitigated demiurge, with uncontrollable ambitions, incessantly creating soulless and authoritarian worlds of control and discipline. There is much that would suggest the English philosopher was pushed towards authoritarianism by the striving to provide a sense of security to the landed classes, and by fear of phenomena such as panic and social unrest. At the same time, as work on specific projects progressed, the noble impulses which often underpin them became weak, and they were replaced, under the influence of perfectionist fears and passions, by the thirst for complete control and total discipline.     Description: Do ngân sách các-bon còn lại trên toàn thế giới đang giảm nhanh chóng, các quốc gia trên toàn cầu đang tìm kiếm các giải pháp để hạn chế phát thải khí nhà kính. Ngành công nghiệp sản xuất và sử dụng than là một trong những ngành phát thải nhiều các-bon nhất, do vậy, các khu vực khai thác than sẽ bị ảnh hưởng đặc biệt bởi quá trình chuyển đổi sang hệ thống năng lượng và kinh tế trung hòa với khí hậu. Tại các khu vực thực hiện chuyển đổi, những thách thức không chỉ tồn tại trong lĩnh vực sản xuất năng lượng, bảo vệ môi trường, mà còn ở các lĩnh vực kinh tế và xã hội - thường được biết đến với khái niệm "Chuyển đổi Công bằng". Các cấp ra quyết định ở các khu vực khai thác than rất cần có các công cụ hỗ trợ giúp họ xác định các giải pháp chuyển đổi, vừa giúp đa dạng hóa nền kinh tế, vừa hỗ trợ người lao động và cộng đồng địa phương. Viện Wuppertal mong muốn hỗ trợ nâng cao năng lực cho các khu vực khai thác than trên toàn thế giới thông qua Bộ công cụ Chuyển dịch Công bằng – một tài liệu tổng quát, minh họa những thách thức và cơ hội của quá trình chuyển đổi bền vững. Bộ Công cụ này bao gồm kiến thức về xây dựng chiến lược, đưa ra các khuyến nghị về quản trị quá trình chuyển đổi, thúc đẩy việc làm bền vững, nêu bật các lựa chọn công nghệ và đề cập tới vấn đề phục hồi môi trường, tái sử dụng các cơ sở hạ tầng sản xuất than. Bộ Công cụ này được xây dựng dựa trên các nghiên cứu của Viện Wuppertal trong khuôn khổ “Sáng kiến của Liên Minh Châu Âu về chuyển dịch tại các khu vực khai thác than” và các kinh nghiệm thực tế của một số khu vực khai thác than trên toàn thế giới.
