    Description: From November 1999 through July 2000, a broadband seismic experiment was carried out at Popocatépetl Volcano to record seismic activity over a wide period range (0.04–100 s). We present an overview of the seismicity recorded during this experiment and discuss results of analyses of long-period (LP) and very-long-period (VLP) seismic signals recorded at stations nearest to the crater over a four-month interval December 1999–March 2000. Three families of LP signals (Types-I, II, and III) are identified based on distinctive waveform features observed periods shorter than 1 s, periods longer than 15 s, and within the period range 0.5–2.5 s. Type-I LP events have impulsive first arrivals and exhibit a characteristic harmonic wave train with dominant periods in the 1.4–1.9 s range during the first 10 s of signal. These events are also associated with a remarkable VLP wavelet with period near 30 s. Type-II LP events represent pairs of events occurring in rapid succession and whose signatures are superimposed. These are typically marked by slowly emergent first arrivals and by a characteristic VLP wave train with dominant period near 30 s, made of two successive wavelets whose shapes are quasi-identical to those of the VLP wavelets associated with Type-I events. Type-III LP events represent the most energetic signals observed during our experiment. These have an emergent first arrival and display a harmonic signature with dominant period near 1.1 s. They are dominated by periods in the 0.25–0.35 s band and contain no significant energy at periods longer than 15 s. Hypocentral locations of the three types of LP events obtained from phase picks point to shallow seismic sources clustered at depths shallower than 2 km below the crater floor. Observed variations in volcanic eruptive activity correlate with defined LP families. Most of the observed seismicity consists of Type-I events that occur in association with 1–3-min-long degassing bursts (“exhalations”). Eruptive activity increased in intensity in February, coinciding with an increasing occurrence of Type-II LP events. Type-III events were first observed at the end of February and during March, in coincidence with the formation of a new lava dome. Vulcanian eruptions occurred in April and May. These events typically exhibit broadband signatures extending over the full period range of the sensors and lasting 30–80 min.

    Description: On 12 May, a great earthquake (Ms=8.0) on the Longmenshan thrust fault rumbled through Chinas Sichuan province, killing more than 69,000 people and injuring 374,000. The Longmenshan thrust is part of the eastern border of the Tibetan Plateau, but it is not the plateaus only restless margin. An even larger earthquake (Ms=8.1) on the Kunlun fault shook northeastern Tibet in 2001, fortunately in a sparsely populated area. These massive quakes underscore the importance of understanding the tectonic response of Asia to collision by India. The International Deep Profiling of Tibet and the Himalaya (INDEPTH) program explores the dynamics of the India-Asia collision. Though many past geophysical studies have focused on the Himalayas and the southern Tibetan Plateau, the INDEPTH IV project examines the deep structure of the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau.

    Description: Here we present the results of local source tomographic inversion beneath central Java. The data set was collected by a temporary seismic network. More than 100 stations were operated for almost half a year. About 13,000 P and S arrival times from 292 events were used to obtain three-dimensional (3-D) Vp, Vs, and Vp/Vs models of the crust and the mantle wedge beneath central Java. Source location and determination of the 3-D velocity models were performed simultaneously based on a new iterative tomographic algorithm, LOTOS-06. Final event locations clearly image the shape of the subduction zone beneath central Java. The dipping angle of the slab increases gradually from almost horizontal to about 70°. A double seismic zone is observed in the slab between 80 and 150 km depth. The most striking feature of the resulting P and S models is a pronounced low-velocity anomaly in the crust, just north of the volcanic arc (Merapi-Lawu anomaly (MLA)). An algorithm for estimation of the amplitude value, which is presented in the paper, shows that the difference between the fore arc and MLA velocities at a depth of 10 km reaches 30% and 36% in P and S models, respectively. The value of the Vp/Vs ratio inside the MLA is more than 1.9. This shows a probable high content of fluids and partial melts within the crust. In the upper mantle we observe an inclined low-velocity anomaly which links the cluster of seismicity at 100 km depth with MLA. This anomaly might reflect ascending paths of fluids released from the slab. The reliability of all these patterns was tested thoroughly.

    Description: It has recently been shown that correlations of seismic noise can contain significant information about the Green's function along the station profile. Using an array of 38 temporary broad-band stations located in Finland between 1998 September and 1999 March, we study the resulting 703 noise correlations to understand how they are influenced by the directivity of the noise field. The latter information is obtained through f-k analysis of data from two permanent seismic arrays in Germany and Norway and from a subset of stations of the array in Finland. Both types of analysis confirm that the characteristic of the seismic noise is strongly frequency-dependent. At low frequencies (0.02-0.04 Hz), we observe diffuse noise and/or randomly distributed sources. In contrast, the noise is strongly direction-dependent and not fully diffuse in the intermediate period ranges (0.04-0.25 Hz) which correspond to the first and second micro seismic peak, created at the Irish and Scottish coast and the western coast of Norway In this frequency interval the noise is sufficiently close to a plane wave to introduce systematic errors in group velocities for station pairs which are not parallel to the direction of the dominant incident noise. Phase velocities calculated by slant stack over many traces are however correct, independently of profile direction. In the high-frequency band (0.25-1.0 Hz), the situation is a mix between the low-frequency and the intermediate frequency cases. Average phase velocities and individual group velocities from well-oriented profiles are in excellent agreement with results from Rayleigh wave studies of the area.

    Description: TOPO-EUROPE addresses the 4-D topographic evolution of the orogens and intra-plate regions of Europe through a multidisciplinary approach linking geology, geophysics, geodesy and geotechnology. TOPO-EUROPE integrates monitoring, imaging, reconstruction and modelling of the interplay between processes controlling continental topography and related natural hazards. Until now, research on neotectonics and related topography development of orogens and intra-plate regions has received little attention. TOPO-EUROPE initiates a number of novel studies on the quantification of rates of vertical motions, related tectonically controlled river evolution and land subsidence in carefully selected natural laboratories in Europe. From orogen through platform to continental margin, these natural laboratories include the Alps/Carpathians–Pannonian Basin System, the West and Central European Platform, the Apennines–Aegean–Anatolian region, the Iberian Peninsula, the Scandinavian Continental Margin, the East-European Platform, and the Caucasus–Levant area. TOPO-EUROPE integrates European research facilities and know-how essential to advance the understanding of the role of topography in Environmental Earth System Dynamics. The principal objective of the network is twofold. Namely, to integrate national research programs into a common European network and, furthermore, to integrate activities among TOPO-EUROPE institutes and participants. Key objectives are to provide an interdisciplinary forum to share knowledge and information in the field of the neotectonic and topographic evolution of Europe, to promote and encourage multidisciplinary research on a truly European scale, to increase mobility of scientists and to train young scientists. This paper provides an overview of the state-of-the-art of continental topography research, and of the challenges to TOPO-EUROPE researchers in the targeted natural laboratories.

    Description: We used data from both permanent and temporary seismic networks on Iceland and Greenland to investigate the crustal thickness by partly reinterpreting earlier data (P receiver functions) and adding S receiver functions to better constrain the results. We obtained good conversions from the Moho and also crustal multiples in both Iceland and Greenland. The central ice covered part of Greenland has an average crustal thickness of 40 km, typical for a craton. At the edges of Greenland the crustal thickness decreases to 30–40 km. On the east coast of Greenland, where the track of the Iceland plume is thought to have affected the lithosphere, the crustal thickness is only 24–26 km. In contrast to previous studies, we find that the crustal thickness in the east and the northwest coastal regions of Iceland is more than 40 km, similar to beneath the active volcanic region. In the southwest region of Iceland and along the mid-ocean ridge, the crustal thickness is only 25 km or less. Also in contrast to earlier receiver function interpretations, which deduced a broad crust-mantle transition zone for Iceland, we find indications for a normal, sharper Moho beneath a number of sites

    Description: Mt. Merapi is one of the most dangerous volcanoes in Indonesia, located within the tectonically active region of south-central Java. This study investigates how Mt. Merapi affected - and was affected by - nearby tectonic earthquakes. In 2001, a Mw6.3 earthquake occurred in conjunction with an increase in fumarole temperature at Mt. Merapi. In 2006, another Mw6.3 earthquake took place, concomitant with an increase of magma extrusion and pyroclastic flows. Here, we develop theoretical models to study the amount of stress transfer between the earthquakes and the volcano, showing that dynamic, rather than static, stress changes are likely responsible for the temporal and spatial proximity of these events. Our examination of the 2001 and 2006 events implies that volcanic activity at Mt. Merapi is influenced by stress changes related to remote tectonic earthquakes, a finding that is important for volcano hazard assessment in this densely inhabited area.

    Description: The Bohemian Massif is part of the Variscan belt of central Europe. We carried out a high resolution mapping of lithospheric thickness beneath central Europe by investigating 264 teleseismic events recorded at 80 broad band stations in the western Bohemian Massif with the method of S receiver function analysis. A negative phase beneath the Saxothuringian and north-eastern Teplá-Barrandian units at about 9-10 s before the S onset is interpreted as caused by the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB) at 80 - 90 km depth. In the Moldanubian unit, the negative phase occurs at 13-15 s before the S onset, corresponding to lithospheric thickness of 120 - 130 km. The boundary between the domains is oriented E-W and probably marks the northern extension of Moldanubian Saxothuringian to the Moldanubian unit. The observed crustal/lithospheric domains could represent two distinct microplates with a relatively sharp boundary cutting through the whole lithosphere.

    Description: Detailed images of the lithosphere beneath the western Bohemian Massif were obtained by analysis of more than 8500 P receiver functions. At the intersection of Regensburg-Leipzig-Rostock zone and Eger Rift, crustal thickness decreases to 26 km from approx. 31 km in the surroundings. The receiver functions display a positive phase at about 6 s delay time and a strong negative phase at 7 to 8 s, which coincides with an area of Moho updoming, CO2 mantle-derived degassing and earthquake swarm activity. These phases can be modeled by a velocity increase at 50 km and a velocity decrease at 65 km depth. The velocity decrease, observed over an area of 5300 km2, gives evidence for local asthenospheric updoming and/or a confined body of partial melt, which might be the cause for high CO2 mantle fluid flow and earthquake swarm activity in this recently nonvolcanic, intracontinental rift area.

    Description: Compound-specific isotope analysis has become an important tool in environmental studies and is an especially powerful way to evaluate biodegradation of hydrocarbons. Here, carbon isotope ratios of light hydrocarbons were used to characterise in-reservoir biodegradation in the Gullfaks oil field, offshore Norway. Increasing biodegradation, as characterised, for example, by increasing concentration ratios of Pr/n-C17 and Ph/n-C18, and decreasing concentrations of individual light hydrocarbons were correlated to 13C-enrichment of the light hydrocarbons. The δ13C values of C4 to C9n-alkanes increase by 7–3‰ within the six oil samples from the Brent Group of the Gullfaks oil field, slight changes (1–3‰) being observed for several branched alkanes and benzene, whereas no change (〈1‰) in δ13C occurs for cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, and toluene. Application of the Rayleigh equation demonstrated high to fair correlation of concentration and isotope data of i- and n-pentane, n-hexane, and n-heptane, documenting that biodegradation in reservoirs can be described by the Rayleigh model. Using the appropriate isotope fractionation factor of n-hexane, derived from laboratory experiments, quantification of the loss of this petroleum constituent due to biodegradation is possible. Toluene, which is known to be highly susceptible to biodegradation, is not degraded within the Gullfaks oil field, implying that the local microbial community exhibits rather pronounced substrate specificities. The evaluation of combined molecular and isotopic data expands our understanding of the anaerobic degradation processes within this oil field and provides insight into the degradative capabilities of the microorganisms. Additionally, isotope analysis of unbiodegraded to slightly biodegraded crude oils from several oil fields surrounding Gullfaks illustrates the heterogeneity in isotopic composition of the light hydrocarbons due to source effects. This indicates that both source and also maturity effects have to be well constrained when using compound-specific isotope analysis for the assessment of biodegradation.

    Description: As part of the South American Geodynamic Activities project we observed the present day deformation field in the territories of Chile and Argentina using the Global Positioning System. The results clearly show that the earthquake cycle dominates the contemporary surface deformation of the central and southern Andes. Compared to geological timescales, the transient elastic deformation related to subduction earthquakes presents a short-term signal which can be explained by interseismic, coseismic, and postseismic phases of interplate thrust earthquakes. We constructed the Andean Elastic Dislocation Model (AEDM) in order to subtract the interseismic loading from the observed velocities. The estimated parameters of the AEDM, and the amount and depth of coupling between the subducting Nazca and overriding South American Plates, represent long-term features and show that the seismogenic interface between both plates is fully locked and that the depth of coupling increases from north to south. The prominent signals in the residual velocity field (i.e. observed velocities minus AEDM) are obviously due to postseismic relaxation processes; they are visible in the area of the 1995 Mw 8.0 Antofagasta earthquake and in the area of the 1960 Mw 9.5 Valdivia earthquake. Although postseismic deformations, compared to geologic timescales, are short-term signals, those signals are valuable constraints on important long-term features of Andean evolution, i.e., the viscosity of the upper mantle and lower crust. The observed surface data are best fitted with a three-dimensional finite element model in which we incorporate a mantle viscosity of 4 × 1019 Pa s. The most obvious long-term deformation signal is manifested in the back-arc of the subduction zone where the Brazilian Shield thrusts beneath the Subandean zone. The style and amount of backarc shortening changes along strike of the orogen, increasing from zero in the south (latitude 〈 −38° S) to values in the order of 10 mm yr−1 close to the Bolivian Orocline. In the fore-arc, whilst we see indications for long-term E-W extension, we did not find any apparent slip partitioning. In addition to this long-term signal, we suggest that the asymmetry of interseismic and coseismic deformation may lead to tectonic structures in the fore-arc. If the coseismic deformation does not release all of the accumulated deformation, then, over many earthquake cycles, part of the interseismic deformation may be transformed into permanent long-term plastic deformation.

    Description: We employ P to S converted waveforms to investigate effects of the hot mantle plume on seismic discontinuities of the crust and upper mantle. We observe the Moho at depths between 13 and 17 km, regionally covered by a strong shallow intracrustal converted phase. Coherent phases on the transverse component indicate either dipping interfaces, 3-D heterogeneities or lower crustal anisotropy. We find anomalies related to discontinuities in the upper mantle down to the transition zone evidently related to the hot mantle plume. Lithospheric thinning is confirmed in greater detail than previously reported by Li et al., and we determine the dimensions of the low-velocity zone within the asthenosphere with greater accuracy. Our study mainly focuses on the temperature-pressure dependent discontinuities of the upper mantle transition zone. Effects of the hot diapir on the depths of mineral phase transitions are verified at both major interfaces at 410 and 660 km. We determine a plume radius of about 200 km at the 660 km discontinuity with a core zone of about 120 km radius. The plume conduit is located southwest of Big Island. A conduit tilted in the northeast direction is required in the upper mantle to explain the observations. The determined positions of deflections of the discontinuities support the hypothesis of decoupled upper and lower mantle convection.

    Description: Combined P and S receiver functions from seismograms of teleseismic events recorded at 65 temporary and permanent stations in the Aegean region are used to map the geometry of the subducted African and the overriding Aegean plates. We image the Moho of the subducting African plate at depths ranging from 40 km beneath southern Crete and the western Peloponnesus to 160 km beneath the volcanic arc and 220 km beneath northern Greece. However, the dip of the Moho of the subducting African plate is shallower beneath the Peloponnesus than beneath Crete and Rhodes and flattens out beneath the northern Aegean. Observed P-to-S conversions at stations located in the forearc indicate a reversed velocity contrast at the Moho boundary of the Aegean plate, whereas this boundary is observed as a normal velocity contrast by the S-to-P conversions. Our modeling suggests that the presence of a large amount of serpentinite (more than 30%) in the forearc mantle wedge, which generally occurs in the subduction zones, may be the reason for the reverse sign of the P-to-S conversion coefficient. Moho depths for the Aegean plate show that the southern part of the Aegean (crustal thickness of 20–22 km) has been strongly influenced by extension, while the northern Aegean Sea, which at present undergoes the highest crustal deformation, shows a relatively thicker crust (25–28 km). This may imply a recent initiation of the present kinematics in the Aegean. Western Greece (crustal thickness of 32–40 km) is unaffected by the recent extension but underwent crustal thickening during the Hellenides Mountains building event. The depths of the Aegean Moho beneath the margin of the Peloponnesus and Crete (25–28 and 25–33 km, respectively) show that these areas are also likely to be affected by the Aegean extension, even though the Cyclades (crustal thickness of 26–30 km) were not significantly involved in this episode. The Aegean lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB) mapped with S receiver functions is about 150 km deep beneath mainland Greece, whereas the LAB of the subducted African plate dips from 100 km beneath Crete and the southern Aegean Sea to about 225 km under the volcanic arc. This implies a thickness of 60–65 km for the subducted African lithosphere, suggesting that the Aegean lithosphere was not significantly affected by the extensional process associated with the exhumation of metamorphic core complexes in the Cyclades.

    Description: The volcanic arc of the Hellenic subduction zone with its four volcanic centers is of major relevance when evaluating the seismovolcanic hazard for the Aegean region. We present results from a 22-station temporary seismic network (CYCNET) in the central Hellenic Volcanic Arc (HVA). CYCNET recordings allow to analyze the level and spatio-temporal evolution of microseismic activity in this region for the first time. A total of 2175 events recorded between September 2002 and July 2004 are analyzed using statistical methods, cluster analysis and relative relocation techniques. We identify distinct regions with significantly varying spatio-temporal behavior of microseismicity. A large portion of the seismic activity within the upper crust is associated with the presence of islands representing horst structures that were generated during the major Oligocene extensional phase. In contrast, the central part of the Cyclades metamorphic core complex remains aseismic considering our magnitude threshold of 1.8 except one spot where events occur swarm-like and with highly similar waveforms. The highest activity in the study area was identified along the SW–NE striking Santorini–Amorgos zone. Within this zone the submarine Columbo volcano exhibits strong temporal variations of seismic activity on a high background level. This activity is interpreted to be directly linked to the magma reservoir and therein the migration of magma and fluids towards the surface. NE of Columbo where no volcanic activity has yet been reported we observe a similar seismicity pattern with small-scaled activity spots that might represent local pathways of upward migrating fluids or even developing volcanic activity within this zone of crustal weakness. In contrast, the Santorini and Milos volcanic complexes do not show significant temporal variations and low to moderate background activity, respectively. Relating our results to the distribution of historical earthquakes and the GPS-derived horizontal velocity field we conclude that the Santorini–Amorgos zone is presently in the state of right-lateral transtension reflecting a major structural boundary of the volcanic arc subdividing it into a seismically and volcanically quiet western and an active eastern part.

    Description: The Andes were formed by Cenozoic tectonic shortening of the South American plate margin overriding the subducting Nazca Plate. Using coupled, thermo-mechanical, numerical modeling of the dynamic interaction between subducting and overriding plates, we searched for factors controlling the intensity of the tectonic shortening. From our modeling, constrained by geological and geophysical observations, we infer that the most important factor was fast and accelerating (from 2 to 3 cm yr(hoch)-1) westward drift of the South American Plate, whereas possible changes in the convergence rate were not as important. Other important factors are the crustal structure of the overriding plate and the shear coupling at the plate interface. The model in which the South American Plate has a thick (40-45 km at 35 Ma) crust and relatively high friction coefficient (0.05) at the Nazca-South American plate interface generates more than 300 km of tectonic shortening over the past 35 million years and replicates well the crustal structure and evolution of the high Central Andes, However, modeling does not confirm that possible climate-controlled changes to the sedimentary trench-fill during the last 30 million years might have significantly influenced the upperplate shortening rate. The model with initially thinner (less than 40 km) continental crust and a lower friction coefficient (less than 0.015) results in less than 40 ikm of shortening in the South American Plate, replicating the situation in the Southern Andes. During upper-plate deformation, the processes that cause a reduction in lithospheric strength and an increase in interplate coupling are particularly important. The most significant of these processes appears to be: (1) delamination of the lower crust and mantle lithosphere, driven by gabbro-eclogite transformation in the thickening lower crust, and (2) mechanical failure of the foreland sediments. The modeling demonstrates that delaminating lithosphere interacts with subduction-zone corner flow, influencing both the rate of tectonic shortening and magmatic-arc productivity, and suggests an anti-correlation between these two parameters. Our model also predicts that the down-dip limit of the frictional coupling domain between the Nazca and South American Plates should be ~15-20 km deeper in the Southern Andes (south of 28° S) compared to the high Central Andes, which is consistent with GPS and seismological observations.

    Description: Receiver functions (RF) are used to investigate the upper mantle structure beneath the Eifel, the youngest volcanic area of Central Europe. Data from 96 teleseismic events recorded by 242 seismological stations from permanent and a temporary network has been analysed. The temporary network operated from 1997 November to 1998 June and covered an area of approximately 400 × 250 km2 centred on the Eifel volcanic fields. The average Moho depth in the Eifel is approximately 30 km, thinning to ca. 28 km under the Eifel volcanic fields. RF images suggest the existence of a low velocity zone at about 60–90 km depth under the West Eifel. This observation is supported by P- and S-wave tomographic results and absorption (but the array aperture limits the resolution of the tomographic methods to the upper 400 km). There are also indications for a zone of elevated velocities at around 200 km depth, again in agreement with S-wave and absorption tomographic results. This anomaly is not visible in P-wave tomography and could be due to S-wave anisotropy. The RF anomalies at the Moho, at 60–90 km, and near 200 km depth have a lateral extent of about 100 km. The 410 km discontinuity under the Eifel is depressed by 15–25 km, which could be explained by a maximum temperature increase of +200°C to +300°C. In the 3-D RF image of the Eifel Plume we also notice two additional currently unexplained conversions between 410 and 550 km depth. They could represent remnants of previous subduction or anomalies due to delayed phase changes. The lateral extent of these conversions and the depression of the 410 km discontinuity is about 200 km. The 660 km discontinuity does not show any depth deviation from its expected value. Our observations are consistent with interpretation in terms of an upper mantle plume but they do not rule out connections to processes at larger depth.

    Description: We use the S receiver function method to study the lithosphere at the Dead Sea Transform (DST). A temporary network of 22 seismic broad-band stations was operated on both sides of the DST from 2000 to 2001 as part of the DESERT project. We also used data from six additional permanent broad-band seismic stations at the DST and in the surrounding area, that is, in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Cyprus. Clear S-to-P converted phases from the crust-mantle boundary (Moho) and a deeper discontinuity, which we interpret as lithosphere- asthenosphere boundary (LAB) have been observed. The Moho depth (30-38 km) obtained from S receiver functions agrees well with the results from P receiver functions and other geophysical data. We observe thinning of the lithosphere on the eastern side of the DST from 80 km in the north of the Dead Sea to about 65 km at the Gulf of Aqaba. On the western side of the DST, the few data indicate a thin LAB of about 65 km. For comparison, we found a 90-km-thick lithosphere in eastern Turkey and a 160-km-thick lithosphere under the Arabian shield, respectively. These observations support previous suggestions, based on xenolith data, heat flow observations, regional uplift history and geodynamic modelling, that the lithosphere around DST has been significantly thinned in the Late Cenozoic, likely following rifting and spreading of the Red Sea.

    Description: We thank Dahlen & Nolet for the comments (DN05) on our paper (HH05). There are many points of agreement, as we think is clear from HH05, but we respectfully continue to differ in opinion on some fundamental aspects of the finite frequency sensitivity kernels known as 'banana doughnut' kernels—hereinafter BDKs, as per the original nomenclature of Dahlen et al.—and their benefit to global tomography. In contrast to DN05's summary statement, HH05's main concern about BDKs is not the effect of uncertainty in the earthquake source signature or origin time. HH05 argue that (i) the evaluation of sensitivity kernels in simple media has limitations for the interpretation of broad-band signals by means of (linearized) finite frequency tomography; (ii) finite frequency kernels are (indeed) oscillatory, but in general heterogeneity their structure will be complex and different from BD features; (iii) the resolved length scales of model variations are induced by the spectral scales present in the data, which makes the notion of 'hole' irrelevant; and (iv) with the need for 'damping' (regularization) and without a basis that matches properly the multi-scale aspects of finite frequency sensitivity, ray theory or finite frequency theory inversions are likely to yield results that are practically the same.

    Description: The 26 December 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake of Mw 9.3 triggered a massive tsunami in the Indian Ocean. We here report on observations of the Indian Ocean tsunami at broadband seismic stations located on islands in the area. The tsunami induces long-period (〉1000 s) signals on the horizontal components of the sensor. Frequency-time analysis shows that the long-period signals cannot be due to seismic surface waves, but that it arrives at the expected time of the tsunami. The waveforms are well correlated to tide gauge observations at a location where both observations are available. To explain the signals we favour tilt due to coastal loading but we cannot at the present stage exclude gravitational effects. The density of broadband stations is expected to increase rapidly in the effort of building an earthquake monitoring system. They may unexpectedly become useful tsunami detectors as well.

    Description: We report on a receiver function study of the crust and upper mantle within DESERT, a multidisciplinary geophysical project to study the lithosphere across the Dead Sea Transform (DST). A temporary seismic network was operated on both sides of the DST between 2000 April and 2001 June. The depth of the Moho increases smoothly from about 30 to 34-38 km towards the east across the DST, with significant north-south variations east of the DST. These Moho depth estimates from receiver functions are consistent with results from steep- and wide-angle controlled-source techniques. Steep-angle reflections and receiver functions reveal an additional discontinuity in the lower crust, but only east of the DST. This leads to the conclusion that the internal crustal structure east and west of the DST is different. The P to S converted phases from both discontinuities at 410 and 660 km are delayed by 2 s with respect to the IASP91 global reference model. This would indicate that the transition zone is consistent with the global average, but the upper mantle above 410 km is 3-4 per cent slower than the standard earth model.

    Description: The Seychelles plateau is a prime example of a microcontinent, yet mechanisms for its creation and evolution are poorly understood. Recently acquired teleseismic data from a deployment of 26 stations on 18 islands in the Seychelles are analyzed to study upper mantle seismic anisotropy using SKS splitting results. Strong microseismic noise is attenuated using a polarization filter. Results show significant variation in time delays (dt =0.4–2.4 s) and smooth variations in orientation (f = 1569 where f is the polarization of the fast shear wave). The splitting results cannot be explained by simple asthenospheric flow associated with absolute plate motions. Recent work has suggested that anisotropy measurements for oceanic islands surrounding Africa can be explained by mantle flow due to plate motion in combination with density-driven flow associated with the African superswell. Such a mechanism explains our results only if there are lateral variations in the viscosity of the mantle. It has been suggested that the Seychelles are underlain by a mantle plume. Predictions of flow-induced anisotropy from plumelithosphere interaction can explain our results with a plume possibly impinging beneath the plateau. Finally, we consider lithospheric anisotropy associated with rifting processes that formed the Seychelles. The large variation in the magnitude of shear wave splitting over short distances suggests a shallow source of anisotropy. Fast directions align parallel to an area of transform faulting in the Amirantes. Farther from this area the orientation of anisotropy aligns in similar directions as plate motions. This supports suggestions of transpressive deformation during the opening of the Mascarene basin.

    Description: A detailed knowledge of the thickness of the lithosphere in the north Atlantic is an important parameter for understanding plate tectonics in that region. We achieve this goal with as yet unprecedented detail using the seismic technique of S-receiver functions. Clear positive signals from the crust-mantle boundary and negative signals from a mantle discontinuity beneath Greenland, Iceland and Jan Mayen are observed. According to seismological practice, we call the negative phase the lithosphere-ashenosphere boundary (LAB). The seismic lithosphere under most of the Iceland and large parts of central Greenland is about 80 km thick. This depth in Iceland is in disagreement with estimates of the thickness of the elastic lithosphere (10-20 km) found from postglacial rebound data. In the region of flood basalts in eastern Greenland, which overlies the proposed Iceland plume track, the lithosphere is only 70 km thick, about 10 km less than in Iceland which is located directly above the proposed plume.     Description: The volcanism responsible for creating the chain of the Hawaiian islands and seamounts is believed to mark the passage of the oceanic lithosphere over a mantle plume1,2. In this picture hot material rises from great depth within a fixed narrow conduit to the surface, penetrating the moving lithosphere3. Although a number of models describe possible plume–lithosphere interactions4, seismic imaging techniques have not had sufficient resolution to distinguish between them. Here we apply the S-wave ‘receiver function’ technique to data of three permanent seismic broadband stations on the Hawaiian islands, to map the thickness of the underlying lithosphere. We find that under Big Island the lithosphere is 100–110 km thick, as expected for an oceanic plate 90–100 million years old that is not modified by a plume. But the lithosphere thins gradually along the island chain to about 50–60 km below Kauai. The width of the thinning is about 300 km. In this zone, well within the larger-scale topographic swell, we infer that the rejuvenation model5 (where the plume thins the lithosphere) is operative; however, the largerscale topographic swell is probably supported dynamically.

    Description: Late Miocene to Quaternary volcanic rocks from the frontal arc to the back-arc region of the Central Volcanic Zone in the Andes show a wide range of δ11B values (+4 to −7 ‰) and boron concentrations (6 to 60 ppm). Positive δ11B values of samples from the volcanic front indicate involvement of a 11B-enriched slab component, most likely derived from altered oceanic crust, despite the thick Andean continental lithosphere, and rule out a pure crust-mantle origin for these lavas. The δ11B values and boron concentrations in the lavas decrease with increasing depth of the Wadati-Benioff Zone. This across-arc variation in δ11B values and decreasing B/Nb ratios from the arc to the back-arc samples are attributed to the combined effects of boron-isotope fractionation during progressive dehydration in the slab and a steady decrease in slab-fluid flux toward the back arc, coupled with a relatively constant degree of crustal contamination as indicated by similar Sr, Nd and Pb isotope ratios in all samples. Three-component mixing calculations for slab-derived fluid, the mantle wedge and the continental crust based on B, Sr and Nd isotope data indicate that the slab-fluid component dominates the boron composition of the fertile mantle and that the primary arc magmas were contaminated by an average addition of 15 to 30% crustal material. Modeling of fluid-mineral boron-isotope fractionation as a function of temperature shows that dehydration reactions liberate continuously changing fluid compositions from the slab during progressive subduction. A combination of a boron-isotope fractionation model and a temperature model for the Central Andean subduction zone fits the across-arc variation in δ11B and we conclude that the boron-isotope composition of arc volcanic rocks, especially in island arcs, is dominated by changing δ11B-composition of boron-rich slab-fluids during progressive dehydration. Owing to the decrease in slab-derived fluid flux crustal contamination becomes more important toward the back-arc. Because of the boron-isotope fractionation effect, across-arc variations in δ11B need not necessarily reflect different mixing proportions between boron derived from the slab-fluid and the mantle wedge.

    Description: Two passive seismic experiments have been carried out across the Trans European Suture Zone (TESZ) from northern Germany to southern Sweden (TOR) and across the Proterozoic-Archaean suture in Finland (SVEKALAPKO) to improve our understanding of the processes involved in the creation of the European continent. Teleseismic earthquakes recorded by the studies of the crust-mantle, and upper mantle seismic discontinuities with the receiver function method. Along the TOR network the depth to the Moho increases from 30 km at the southern edge of the profile to 40 km at the Elbe Line. Between the Elbe Line and TESZ the Moho branches off and whereas the deeper branch continues at 40 km depth to the TESZ a second branch appears at 30.35 km depth. The upper branch descends north of the TESZ to below 55 km under the northern end of the TOR profile. The crustal thickening north of the TESZ is accompanied by an increase in average Vp/Vs values, appearance of intracrustal conversion zones and north dipping features which we interpret as remnants of the subduction and subsequent collision between Avalonia and Baltica. In southern Finland beneath the SVEKALAPKO network the Moho starts in the south at the depth of 40-45 km, plunges to about 65 km depth south of the Archaean-Proterozoic suture. This deepening of the Moho is coincident with a north dipping intracrustal structure apparently related to the subduction and collision and of the Proterozoic and Archaean provinces in Proterozoic. North of the line of the suture the Moho rises smoothly to 45-50 km depth in the Archaean province. Along the TOR profile, 410 and 660 discontinuities were hard to detect. However, manyfold stacking of receiver functions revealed that the conversions from the two discontinuities arrive more or less accordingto IASP91 predicted time. Across the SVEKALAPKO network 410 and 660 discontinuities arrive markedly earlier than IASP91 theoretical arrival times. In particular north of the Archaean-Proterozoic suture in Finland the 410 and 660 km conversions arrive about 2s earlier, indicating about 5 per cent higher average upper mantle velocities and lower temperatures than what IASP91 global model predicts.     Description: The GLATIS project (Greenland Lithosphere Analysed Teleseismically on the Ice Sheet) with collaborators has operated a total of 16 temporary broadband seismographs for periods from 3 months to 2 years distributed over much of Greenland from late 1999 to the present. The very first results are presented in this paper, where receiver-function analysis has been used to map the depth to Moho in a large region where crustal thicknesses were previously completely unknown. The results suggest that the Proterozoic part of central Greenland consists of two distinct blocks with different depths to Moho. North of the Archean core in southern Greenland is a zone of very thick Proterozoic crust with an average depth to Moho close to 48 km. Further to the north the Proterozoic crust thins to 37–42 km. We suggest that the boundary between thick and thin crust forms the boundary between the geologically defined Nagssugtoqidian and Rinkian mobile belts, which thus can be viewed as two blocks, based on the large difference in depth to Moho (over 6 km). Depth to Moho on the Archean crust is around 40 km. Four of the stations are placed in the interior of Greenland on the ice sheet, where we find the data quality excellent, but receiver-function analyses are complicated by strong converted phases generated at the base of the ice sheet, which in some places is more than 3 km thick.

    Description: Noise measurements were carried out at 381 sites in the Cologne area (Germany) using both short period and broad band sensors. The large number of data allowed both assesment of the influence of different sensors in the site response estimation and to compare the widely used H/V technique with the recently proposed Fourier Phase Spectral Method (FPSM). The results show that short period sensors are able to reliably retrieve site effects at frequencies well below their corner frequencies. Moreover, the H/V method should be preferred to the FPSM in determining the fundamental resonance frequency of soils. Finally, a map showing the resonance frequency distribution in the studied area was drawn using the results obtained applying the H/V technique.

    Description: The main structures of the mid-European lithosphere, crossing Europe from the Iberian peninsula to the Bohemian Massif, are predominantly formed by the Variscan orogeny. To investigate the anisotropy of the mantle at the transition zone between the two Variscan units, the Saxothuringicum and the Moldanubicum, we carried out a field experiment in SE Germany in 1995-1996: 23 mobile broad-band stations were installed for 6 months in the Vogtland-Oberpfalz-Bavarian Forest area. The station profile crossed the suture zone of the Saxothuringicum and Moldanubicum near the KTB borehole (German Continental Deep Drilling Program). With a mean station spacing of about 10 km? we intended to obtain a high lateral resolution of the anisotropy parameters and to resolve possible changes when passing the suture zone. The analysis of the observed birefringence of SKS phases shows E-W directions for the fast polarization. Therefore, the directions deviate only slightly from the strike of the Hercynian mountain belt and from the direction of the absolute plate motion in that region. Indications for the transition zone come from a rotation of the fast polarization direction from 86 degrees +/- 13 degrees in the northern part of the profile (Saxothuringicum) to 110 degrees +/- 15 degrees in the southern part (Moldanubicum) as well as from strong variations of the splitting parameters with respect to the azimuths of the incoming waves in the middle of the profile. We interpret these variations as an expression of a complex mantle structure formed either by several anisotropic layers with inclined symmetry axes in at least one layer or by a model consisting of inhomogeneous anisotropic layers. A comparison of the azimuthal variations of the splitting parameters in the middle of the profile with those observed at the Grafenberg station GRAl-situated in the central part of the transition zone approximately 100 km to the west-shows remarkable differences, which may reflect lateral variations in the direction and inclination of the symmetry axes in the transition zone even on a small scale. Both observations-the change in the fast polarization direction from the northern to the southern part as well as the variations with respect to different azimuths in the middle of the profile-suggest that the transition zone between the Saxothuringicum and the Moldanubicum continues down into the upper mantle.

    Description: Seismological models of upper mantle structure provide important constraints on the Earth"s convection system. Resolving the details of the upper mantle discontinuities is important for modelling the composition of the mantle and for understanding the effect that the discontinuities may have on mantle convection. Recently, numerous permanent and temporary seismic stations and networks have been set up around the world. It is possible to get the seismic records for the research needs from data management systems like IRIS, GEOFON, GEOSCOPE, FREESIA, etc. The use of seismograms collected from a large number of stations and earthquakes around the world enable us to study the global and the regional structure of the Earth. In this work, the receiver function technique (e.g. Owens et. Al., 1995) is applied to study the upper mantle structure in the northwest Pacific subduction zone and in the Hawaiian hotspot area. In the northwest Pacific, the Pacific plate is subducted into the upper mantle to more than 600 km depth, indicated by seismicity. In Hawaii, the volcanic edifice of the Hawaiian Islands and seamounts are believed to result from the passage of the oceanic lithosphere over a stationary mantle hotspot (Wilson, 1963; Morgan, 1971; Morgan et. al., 1995). In both regions the upper mantle structure is affected by the cold and warm materials, respectively. To study the extension of the temperature anomaly is important for understanding the Earth"s convection system. The olivine component of the mantle material is intensively studied in laboratories (e.g. Ito and Takahashi, 1989; Irifune, 1987). With increasing temperature and pressure, the olivine crystal undergoes a series of phase transformations which will result in a variation of the seismic structure. The effect of the temperature anomaly on the main upper mantle discontinuities will be discussed in chapter 2. Recently, the receiver function technique is increasingly applied to investigate the upper mantle discontinuities. To isolate the upper mantle conversion phases, newly developed moveout correction and migration methods are applied to separately distributed seismic stations as well as station arrays. The receiver function method used in this study will be introduced in chapter 3. In chapter 4 and 5, receiver function studies in the area of the northwest Pacific subduction zone and the Hawaiian mantle plume are presented. Regional tectonic background and the previous seismological works in these two areas will be first introduced in each chapter, and followed by description of data, processing steps, results and interpretations. In chapter 6, I will summarize the observations of the 410 and 660 topography in the northwest Pacific subduction zone and in the area around the Hawaiian mantle plume.

    Description: The new GFZ/GRGS gravity field models GRIM5-S1 and Cl, current initial models for the CHAMP mission, have been compared with other recent models (JGM 3, EGM 96) for radial accuracy (by means of latitude lumped coefficients) in computations on altimetry satellite orbits. The basis for accuracy judgements are extensive (multi-year) averages of crossover sea height differences from Geosat and ERS 1/2 missions. These data are fully independent of the data used to develop these gravity models. We tested how well these observed differences in all the world's oceans agree with projections of the same errors from the scaled covariance matrix of their harmonic geopotential coefficients. It was found that the tentative (model) scale factor of 5 for the formal standard deviations of the harmonic coefficients of the new GRIM fields is justified, i.e. the accuracy estimates, provided together with the geopotential coefficients, are realistic.

    Description: SKS and SKKS shear waves recorded on the INDEPTH III seismic array deployed in central Tibet during 1998 - 1999 have been analysed for the direction and extent of seismic polarization anisotropy. The 400-km-long NNW trending array extended south to north, from the central Lhasa terrane, across the Karakoram-Jiali fault system and Banggong-Nujiang suture to the central Qiangtang terrane. Substantial splitting with delay times from 1 to 2 s, and fast directions varying from E-W to NE-SW, was observed for stations in the Qiangtang trerrane and northernmost Lhasa terrane. No detectable splitting was observed for stations located farther south in the central Lahsa terrane. The change in shear wave splitting characteristics occurs at 32°N, approximately coincident with the transcurrent Karakoram-Jiali fault system but ~40 km south of the surface trace of the Banggong-Nujiang suture. This location is also near the southernmost edge of a region of high Sn attenuation and low upper mantle velocities found in previous studies. The transition between no measured splitting and strong anisotropy (2.2 s delay time) is exceptionally sharp (=15 km), suggesting a large crustal contribution to the measured splitting. The E-W to NE-SW fast directions are broadly similar to the fast directions observed farther east along the Yadong-Golmud highway, suggesting that no large-scale change in anisotropic properties occurs in the east-west direction. However, in detail, fast directions and delay times vary over lateral distances of ~100 km in both the N-S and E-W direction by as much as 40° and 0.5-1 s, respectively. The onset of measurable splitting at 32° N most likely marks the northern limit of the underthrusting Indian lithosphere, which is characterized by negligible polarization anisotropy. Taken in conjunction with decades of geophysical and geological observations in Tibet, the new anisotropy measurements are consistent with a model where hot and weak upper mantle beneath northern Tibet is being squeezed and sheared between the advancing Indian lithosphere to the south and the Tsaidam and Tarim Lithospheres to the north and west, resulting in eastward flow and possibly thickening and subsequent detachment due to gravitational instability. In northern Tibet, crustal deformation clearly follows this large-scale deformation pattern.

    Description: During the TOR-1 passive seismic experiment in 1996/97, a maximum of 139 temporary seismograph stations were operating over the Sorgenfrei-Tornquist Zone (STZ) in an area extending from northern Germany through Denmark to central Sweden. One of the objectives was to study horizontal anisotropy directions in the subcrustal lithosphere and asthenosphere across the Trans-European Suture Zone. To achieve this goal,broad-band and intermediate-period (5 s) data of the TOR-1 stations and additional stations of permanent networks (GRSN, GEOFON) were analysed for splitting of SKS and SKKS phases. As a result of the relatively dense station spacing, the method offers good lateral resolution of anisotropy.Preliminary results suggest that the directions of the fast horizontal S wave velocity are affected by the STZ. In central Europe and southern Sweden, far away from the STZ, fast S wave directions are approximately E-W while they turn more northerly closer to the STZ where they are approximately parallel to the trend of the STZ. No significant shear wave splitting was observed north of 57 degr. N and east of 14 degr. E. Small delay times between 0.2 and 0.5 s observed at the northernmost TOR-1 station T40S and T60S may be controlled by anisotropy in a thickened crust. The mantle contribution of horizontal anisotropy within the STZ is probably constrained to an approximately 60-km-thick zone in the depth range between 70 and 300 km. The observations are consistent with a model where azimuthally anisotropy is not governed by present-day mantle flow in the asthenosphere, but rather is frozen into the subcrustal lithosphere during the last episode of tectonic activity.

    Description: Oxygen-isotope ratios of precipitation (δ18OP) inferred from deep-lake ostracods from the Ammersee (southern Germany) provide a climate record with decadal resolution. The record in detail shows many of the rapid climate shifts seen in central Greenland ice cores between 15,000 and 5000 years before the present (B.P.). Negative excursions in the estimated δ18OP from both of these records likely reflect short weakenings of the thermohaline circulation caused by episodic discharges of continental freshwater into the North Atlantic. Deviating millennial-scale trends, however, indicate that climate gradients between Europe and Greenland changed systematically, reflecting a gradual rearrangement of North Atlantic circulation during deglaciation.

    Description: This technical report has been initiated, compiled and edited until March 1994. Its objective was to collect the existing geoscientific database and state of the art on the Uralides. It serves as a platform for financial and operational decisions by national and international funding agencies on the URSEIS95-project (Urals Reflection Seismic Experiment and Integrated Studies) under the EUROPROBE umbrella. The German DEKORP2000 (GFZ Potsdam), funded by BMBF, decided to operate this project in June 1994. Until November 1994, the COCORP project (Cornell University, U.S.A), funded by NSF, and CICYT (Barcelona, Spain) got funding to join a western consortium on the operation ofURSEIS in 1995. Until the end of 1994, a Russian consortium, funded by ROSGEOLCOM, was built under the leadership of SPETSGEOFISIKA (Moscow), integrating the BAZHENOV Geophysical Expedition (Sheelite, Ekaterinburg), BASHNEFTEGEOFISIKA (Ufa) and the GEON institute (Moscow). All partners in the project join forces in financing, acquisition, processing, interpretation and publishing the results of the seismic experiment. The field parameters of the experiment (chapter VI) have been slightly modified in the meantime and include the Vibroseis source technique. The field campaign is scheduled for May-September 1995. The interdisciplinary studies (chapter Vll) have been approved by the E.C. in the frame of the INTAS-programme (International Association for the Promotion of Cooperation with Scientists from the Independent States of the Former Soviet Union). in October 1994 and started their operational phase.

    Description: The plate tectonic concept has nearly revolutionized the geo-sciences in the last decades. Many geodynamical, geophysical and geological phenomena could be understood for the first time. The investigation of the present-day global crustal kinematics is a crucial contribution which can be delivered by space geodesy only. Since the beginning of the MERIT-Campaign continuous good quality laser ranging data to LAGEOS are available. Using these data a precise estimation of present-day global-scale tectonic motion is possible. During the WEGENER/MEDLAS project the worldwide tracking network has been densified by a number of fixed and mobile stations in the southern Europe and eastern Mediterranean. Having now for a number of sites three to four occupations within four years significant site motions can be extracted. The derived motions are essential input information for deformation analyses and the interpretation of plate tectonic parameters.
