Notes: Abstract Some of the basic developments in the theory of electromagnetic field representation in terms of Hertz vectors are reviewed. A solution for the field in an inhomogeneous anisotropic medium is given in terms of the two Hertz vectors. Conditions for presentation of the field in terms of uncoupled transverse electric and transverse magnetic modes, in a general orthogonal coordinate system, are derived when the permeability and permittivity tensors have only diagonal components. These conditions are compared with some known special cases.

Notes: Abstract Sickle cell anaemia (SCA) exhibits significant variations in clinical presentation in different populations for which several genetic factors including SCA-associated α-and β-thalassaemias, G-6-PD deficiency and elevated Hb F level have been implicated as possible ameliorating factors. Saudi Arabia is unique in that mild and severe forms of the disease occur at a high frequency. We investigated the Gγ/Aγ ratio and Hb F level and correlated these values with the severity of SCA. The results showed that Hb F level varies significantly in both groups of patients with no evident correlation with the mild clinical manifestations. However, Gγ/Aγ ratio correlated significantly with the disease severity where a high ratio was observed in patients with the mild and a low ratio in patients with the severe disease. The results are evaluated and discussed in the light of correlation studies and regression analysis.

Notes: Abstract Fetal haemoglobin (HbF) level shows significant variations in health and disease states. In this study we investigated Hb F level in 75 cord bloods, 1266 healthy individuals, 1582 Hb S heterozygotes, 464 sickle cell anaemia, 93 Hb S/β2-thalassemia and 65 β-thalassemia major patients. The age range of the study groups varied from newborn to over 60 years of age. Hb F level was measured by an alkali denaturation procedure and by radial immunodiffusion. The ratio of the level of Gγ-globin chains to the level of Aγ-globin chains (Gγ/Aγ) was determined in the patients group by high performance liquid chromatography. The Hb F level was significantly higher in the sickle cell anaemia and β-thalassemia major patients compared to the Hb S heterozygotes and the normal individuals. Within each group Hb F level was higher in the female population compared to the age-matched male groups. This difference was statistically significant (P〈0.05) in the sickle cell disease patients and β-thalassemia major patients but not in the normal individuals. After the age of 30 years, the difference in the value of Hb F in the male and female population become more apparent (P〈0.05) in the sickle cell disease and β-thalassaemia major patients. No statistically significant sex differences were found in the Gγ/Aγratio in the patient groups, and the range of Gγ/Aγratio in the patients groups were similar to those in the control group. The results showed that age, sex and genetic disorders of haemoglobin are factors that affect Hb F level and indicate the possible involvement of an X-linked factor in control of Hb F production.

Notes: Three-dimensional photonic bandgap (PBG) structures using alumina (Al2O3) as the high permittivity material were modeled and then the structures were fabricated by Fused Deposition of Multi-materials (FDMM) technology. A finite element method and a real-time electromagnetic wave propagation software were used to simulate and design the layered PBG structures for applications in the microwave frequency range. The modeling predicted a 3-D photonic bandgap in the 16.5–23.5?GHz range. FDMM provides a computer-controlled process to generate 3-D structures, allowing high fabrication flexibility and efficiency. Electromagnetic measurements displayed the presence of a bandgap between 17.1–23.3?GHz, showing a good agreement with the predicted values. These PBG structures are potential candidates for applications in advanced communication systems.

Notes: Compared to conventional manufacturing processes, fused deposition (FD)-based layered manufacturing processes have dramatically reduced the part design and manufacturing time. However, it is necessary to further enhance their process productivity. To this end, improvement of FD process efficiency is studied in this paper. A build time analysis is conducted and the deposition parameters that can be used to speed up fabrication processes are identified. The tool path-based deposition planning approach is extended for ensuring layer quality when the build process is expedited under adjusted deposition parameters. A test part was built to demonstrate the proposed approach.

Notes: Abstract Fibreglass has been used recently as a prestressing material in concrete structures, and it has demonstrated some advantages over steel tendons especially in corrosive environments. An experimental estimation of the long term losses of concrete columns and piles pretensioned with fibreglass (S-2 glass) is presented in this paper. Three identical sets of steel and fibreglass specimens with nominal dimensions of 152 mm×102 mm×2.6 m (6 in ×4 in ×102 in) were instrumented and tested to evaluate prestress losses under axial compression loads at different stress levels. Results after 20 months show that prestress losses in fibreglass tendons are less than those in steel tendons. The effective prestress for fibreglass pretensioned specimens can be predicted accurately using the step-by-step method. The measured data were compared with several models. For a practical applied stress of 0.3fc ′, the current ACI and Bazant equations for creep and shrinkage predicted the strain history, prestress losses, and effective prestress of fibreglass pretensioned concrete specimens with good accuracy.

Notes: Abstract A study of the source simulation technique is presented for the solution of the exterior Dirichlet and Neumann problems for the Helmholtz equation. The solution is in terms of a single-layer potential extended over an internal circle. The advantages of the method in treating the nonuniqueness problem and in computing the scattered and the far fields are illustrated.
