    Keywords: energy engineering
Description / Table of Contents: A sustainable future for our information society relies on bridging the gap between the energy required to operate portable ICT devices with the energy available from portable/mobile sources. The only viable solution is attacking the gap from both sides, i.e. to reduce the amount of energy dissipated during computation and to improve the efficiency in energy harvesting technologies. This requires deeper and broader knowledge of fundamental processes and thorough understanding of how they apply to materials and engineering at the nanoscale, all the way up to the design of energy-efficient electronics. This textbook is a first attempt to discuss such concepts towards Zero-Power ICT. The content is accessible to advanced undergraduates and early year researchers fascinated by this topic. The book is realized through the EU-funded ZEROPOWER project.

Description / Table of Contents: Magnesium alloys with their unique physical and chemical properties are important candidates for many modern engineering applications. Their density, being the lowest of all structural metals, makes them the primary choice in global attempts aimed at reducing the weight of transportation vehicles. However, magnesium also creates challenges at certain stages of raw alloy melting, fabrication of net-shape components and their service. The first one is caused by very high affinity of magnesium to oxygen, which requires protective atmospheres increasing manufacturing cost and heavily contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. The second challenge relates to very high corrosivity of liquid magnesium towards materials it contacts. This imposes restrictions on the selection of materials used to contain, transfer or process molten magnesium during manufacturing operations. A mixture of unique benefits and serious challenges of magnesium alloys in solid and liquid states described here makes the book very useful for a broad audience of scientists and engineers from academia and industry.

    Keywords: climate change
Description / Table of Contents: Climate change is emerging as one of the most important issues of our time, with the potential to cause profound cascading effects on ecosystems and society. However, these effects are poorly understood and our projections for climate change trends and effects have thus far proven to be inaccurate. In this collection of 24 chapters, we present a cross-section of some of the most challenging issues related to oceans, lakes, forests, and agricultural systems under a changing climate. The authors present evidence for changes and variability in climatic and atmospheric conditions, investigate some the impacts that climate change is having on the Earth's ecological and social systems, and provide novel ideas, advances and applications for mitigation and adaptation of our socio-ecological systems to climate change. Difficult questions are asked. What have been some of the impacts of climate change on our natural and managed ecosystems? How do we manage for resilient socio-ecological systems? How do we predict the future? What are relevant climatic change and management scenarios? How can we shape management regimes to increase our adaptive capacity to climate change? These themes are visited across broad spatial and temporal scales, touch on important and relevant ecological patterns and processes, and represent broad geographic regions, from the tropics, to temperate and boreal regions, to the Arctic.

Description / Table of Contents: Chronology is the backbone of history, and there is a wise saying stating there is no history without a chronology. Earths evolutionary history is built up by geochronology, i.e. time benchmarks upon which the geological history is built up step by step over its total time period of about 4.5 billion years. The first marker in this history is the Jack Hills zircon from Australia dated at about 4.4 GA. The most detailed records come from seasonal changes within annual varves. Stratigraphy provides the basic chronological ordering of layers by layers, units by units, fossil assemblage by assemblage, varves by varves, growth zone by growth zone, etc. The radiometric techniques implied the introduction of absolute age determinations. This book includes a combination of methodological presentations and related case studies, from where we learn about practical problems and achievements. Therefore, the book should be of basic interest both for scientists in their practical in field and laboratory, as well as for general educational purpose.

Description / Table of Contents: Global warming resulting from the use of fossil fuels is threatening the environment and energy efficiency is one of the most important ways to reduce this threat. Industry, transport and buildings are all high energy-using sectors in the world and even in the most technologically optimistic perspectives energy use is projected to increase in the next 50 years. How and when energy is used determines society's ability to create long-term sustainable energy systems. This is why this book, focusing on energy efficiency in these sectors and from different perspectives, is sharp and also important for keeping a well-founded discussion on the subject.

Description: The glacial-isostatic adjustment in Iceland resulting from the recent melting of the Vatnajökull ice cap is controlled by the viscosity distribution in the earth's interior and by the details of the melting history. Interpretations of the results of GPS and gravity measuring campaigns in the time interval 1991-2000 and 1992-1999, respectively, by means of laterally homogeneous earth models for the determination of the lithosphere thickness, the asthenosphere thickness and the asthenosphere viscosity have so far been not fully satisfactory. In particular near the ice margin, the fitting of the computed land uplift and gravity change to the observational data was inadequate, which may be related to the neglegt of the Iceland plume in the laterally homogeneous earth models. In the present study, a program package is used for the modelling of the land uplift and gravity change that allows the computation of load-induced perturbations of a Maxwell-viscoelastic, incompressible, self-gravitating, spherical earth model. To simulate the presence of the plume below the Vatnajökull, an axisymmetric viscosity distribution is used, where the plume radius and the plume viscosity are free parameters. Based on seismic results, a 6-km-thick lithosphere is assumed above the plume, which thickens to 35 km in the peripheral region of the plume. The melting history of the Vatnajökull is founded on interpretations of geomorphological and climatological investigations and is simulated by a load co-axial with the plume with parabolic profile and time-dependent radius. The results of the modelling favour a plume radius of ~80 km and a plume viscosity of (0.3-1.0) x 10^{18} Pa s.

Description: The Resource Assessment Branch of the Department of Water Land and Biodiversity Conservation (DWLBC) is currently undertaking the ‘Northern Adelaide Plains Prescribed Wells Area Well Investigation Project’ for the Northern Adelaide and Barossa Catchment Water Management Board (NABCWMB). This report provides an overview of the issues, results to date and future directions for the project. Stage 1 of the Leaky Wells Project is designed to audit and compile an accurate list of licensed irrigation wells within the Northern Adelaide Plains (NAP) Prescribed Wells Area (PWA). Of these licensed wells pumped salinity samples were to be collected by the licence holder and submitted for analysis. From a review of these wells and recorded salinity information all wells determined to be contaminating the major production aquifers were to be identified, investigated and remedial action undertaken. Stage 2 of the Leaky Wells Project aimed to assess the condition of the 2868 abandoned and disused wells throughout the NAP. As mentioned in the Administrative Agreement, it was expected that this phase of the project would be the most intensive, requiring considerable field investigations to determine the locations and current condition of these wells.

Description: The main objective of this thesis is an investigation and description of the secular variation of the Earth's magnetic field between 1980 and 2000. In particular, in the first part of this study the phenomenon of geomagnetic jerks are investigated by means of a deterministic model, which basically gives a description of the secular variation as a parameterization of typical periodicities of the external field. I argue that the conclusion drawn from this approach is not valid for explaining jerks as caused by external events and not valid to describe the global secular variation. In the second part a time--dependent model of the secular variation between 1980 and 2000 is developed. The endpoints of the time interval were chosen, because of the availability of high quality field models from satellite data for these epochs. The Gauss coefficients are expanded in time as function of cubic B--splines. This model is forced to fit field models from high quality vector measurements from MAGSAT in 1980 and OERSTED in 2000. The methodology is new. The model is a valuable extension of the hitherto existing time--dependent description of the secular variation, the GUFM which was valid until 1990. Unlike GUFM the model is based on observatory monthly means, and the knot spacing of the cubic B--Splines tighter than GUFM. Therefore it reveals a short term secular variation on subdecadal time scale, which was not as yet resolved. The model is also valuable to test the frozen flux hypothesis and to link some of the morphology of the radial field at the core--mantle boundary to the geodynamo. The third part of this thesis deals with the inversion of the time--dependent field and secular variation model for different kinds of core surface flow ...

Description: For deep underground excavations, the prediction of locations of small-scale geotechnical hazardous structures such as faults is nearly impossible when exploration is restricted to surface based methods. Therefore, for many base tunnels, exploration ahead of the advancing tunnel face is an essential component of the excavation plan. This PhD thesis aims at improving the technology for geological interpretations of seismic data, collected in underground excavations. For that purpose GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam carried out a series of seismic measurements along the 2600 m long and up to 1400 m deep Faido access tunnel, an adit to the 57 km long Gotthard base tunnel in Switzerland.

Description: Present-day sea-level change around Greenland is examined by assessing the roleplayed by glacial-isostatic adjustment (GIA). We consider the contributions from: (1) the ongoing GIA due to changes in the extent and thickness of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS) following the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), (2) the equivalent signal associated with the continental ice masses located outside of Greenland, and (3) present-day changes in the GIS. Changes in the GIS arising from the last glacial-interglacial transition generally result in falling sea level today. The contribution from ice-load changes outside of Greenland causes rising sea level, owing to Greenland's location on the collapsing forebulge that surrounds the former North American ice sheets. Combining predictions of these contributions gives results showing rising sea level in the southwest and falling sea level in the north and east. However, this is strongly dependent upon the neoglacial part of the GIS's history. The present-day behaviour of the GIS is predicted to cause falling sea level with rates of several mm yr?1 around areas experiencing the larger ice-load changes. The available tide-gauge data are considered unusable by the standards of many workers. Nevertheless, we compare rates of local sea-level change inferred from this type of data with our predictions. In Southern Greenland, where the tide-gauge stations are located, sea level is predicted to be rising at a rate of 4 to 5 mm yr?1. Our predictions match most of the rates obtained from the tide-gauge time series, with the exception of Qaqortoq where the inferred rates may also reect additional oceanic and meteorological effects. Similarly, our predictions are consistent with GPS observations, with again the exception of Qaqortoq.

Description: We review the historical, geological, tide-gauge, GPS and gravimetric evidence advanced in favour of or against continuing land uplift around Hudson Bay, Canada. After this, we reanalyse the tide-gauge and GPS data for Churchill using longer time series than those available to previous investigators. The dependence of the mean rate of relative sea-level change obtained on the length and mid-epoch of the observation interval considered is investigated by means of the newly developed linear-trend analysis diagram. For studying the shorter-period variability of the tide-gauge record, the continuous-wavelet transform is used. The mean rate of land uplift obtained from GPS is based on a new analysis using IGS solutions of GFZ. Furthermore, sea-level indicators from the Churchill region representing the relative sea-level history during the past 8000 a are included. Finally, the four types of observable are jointly inverted in terms of mantle viscosity. The optimum values are 3×10^20 Pa s and 1.6 × 10^22 Pa s for the upper- and lower-mantle viscosities, respectively.

Description: Recently released global gravity field models generated solely from CHAMP and GRACE satellite observations allow with an unprecedented accuracy and resolution the recovery of the mean sea surface topography from the difference between an altimetry-based mean sea surface height model and the gravity model's derived geoid. Here the CHAMP EIGEN-2 gravity field model, and the first GFZ GRACE gravity model, EIGEN-GRACE01S, are used. The mean sea surface height model has been compiled from four years'; worth of TOPEX altimeter data. To evaluate the accuracy and resolution limits of the CHAMP and GRACE geoids for the envisaged application, a low pass filter in the spatial domain with different cut-off wavelengths has been applied to the geoid and sea surface data before subtraction. The minimum wavelength, where noisy and erroneous features in the recovered sea surface topography are minimised, can be interpreted as an indicator for the best suited common spatial resolution. The EIGEN-2 model's geoid has been tested to have a resolution of 1800 km, which corresponds to a truncation degree of l = 22 in terms of spherical harmonics. Using the EIGEN-GRACE01S model, the resolution could be extended to 1000 km (l = 40). These boundaries can be attributed to the geoid's error, exceeding 2 cm in case of the CHAMP model, and in case of the GRACE model to spurious systematic signals increasing with increasing spherical harmonic degree. The calculated sea surface topography models have been used to derive absolute geostrophic sea surface velocities. An error propagation shows that the requirement of 1 cm/s for geoid induced velocity errors is fulfilled at the given resolutions for all latitudes excluding a narrow equatorial band. Maximum geostrophic velocities are derived in the 1000 km-resolution model for the Kuroshio region with 40 cm/s, and for the Gulf Stream east off Cape Hatteras with 25 cm/s.

Description: The LaCoste & Romberg gravity meter S124b and its associated system environment were installed and tested in conjunction with a strap-down gravity meter system (SAGS) of the Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften in Munich on a Cessna Grand Caravan of the DLR in Oberpfaffenhofen. This report describes the design and instrumentation of the aerogravimetry system, it documents the installation on the aircraft and it discusses some of the results of the test flights performed within AGFA (Airborne Gravity Flight Approach). Beyond the documentation of the system this report gives a short introduction to the basics of the instruments including a short theory of their operation and data processing. The intention is to give readers from disciplines other than aero-gravimetry and aero-altimetry a technical insight into how the system works and what it is capable of. This should help the reader to evaluate the systems usefulness in other geo-scientific projects. The experiences from the test flights are briefly summarized and an update of the current status and future plans for the individual instruments is given. The aerogravimetry system consists of two major instrument blocks: the gravimetry sensing system and the positioning system. The gravimetry sensors are the LaCoste & Romberg S124b and the SAGS-2.2 systems. The navigation block holds GPS receivers, an inertial navigation system and a laser altimeter. The aircraft used for the primary tests was a Cessna Grand Caravan of the DLR in Oberpfaffenhofen. It offers superb conditions for scientific installations and is widely used in geophysical exploration all over the world. The test flights were flown from Oberpfaffenhofen airport. One profile covers the Bavarian Alps to map short wavelength, topography induced gravity disturbances, and another flight crosses the Rhine Graben to map long wavelength structures of the deeper crust. The software for data processing for navigation, gravimetry and geoid calculations is briefly summarized.

Description: The Barossa Basin is a complex hydrogeological environment containing a sedimentary aquifer system surrounded and underlain by a dual porosity fractured rock aquifer. The hydraulic relationship between the fractured rock aquifer and the sedimentary aquifers is poorly understood. The difficulties in describing the movement of groundwater through dual porosity media such as a fractured rock aquifer are well documented. While groundwater flow in the sedimentary aquifers can be adequately described using porous media flow techniques in the Barossa Basin, our understanding of interconnectivity between individual sedimentary aquifers is again poor. The Basin itself is narrow and, immediately adjacent to the Stockwell Fault on the eastern side of the valley, relatively deep (~200 m). Sediments deposited into the trough consisted of mainly discontinuous sequences of overlapping sands and carbonaceous clays. This was followed by the deposition of gravels, sands and clays that form the Barossa Valley as it is today. Various authors have sub-divided the geology into individual hydrostratigraphical units. However, a review of the literature highlighted inconsistencies in the number of aquifers recognised, their exact spatial distribution within the Basin, and that there have been changes in nomenclature that are not satisfactorily described. This has resulted in some confusion that requires clarification ...

Description: Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) has the potential to utilise surface water resources, including urban stormwater runoff and treated wastewater that is largely wasted; thereby relieving the pressure on groundwater resources. In the broader sense, opportunities exist to use ASR to rethink our traditional water management and distribution policies, and to provide cost-effective and innovative alternatives to current methods of water supply. In South Australia, an increasing amount of stress is being placed on surface and groundwater resources to meet demands from expanding irrigated horticultural areas and urban populations. ASR can be used to reduce some of the pressure on traditional supplies of water, especially in metropolitan areas. But the sources of water for ASR must be carefully considered especially in rural areas so as not to shift the burden from one water supply source to another. A number of issues surround the use of ASR as a water management solution and these relate principally to water quality and water quantity. In rural areas, for example, the 'harvesting' of water from creeks and streams may result in extra pressure on an already stressed resource by further reducing the amount of water available to the environment. In urban areas the expanse of paved surfaces provides an ideal medium to capture large volumes of stormwater runoff. However, the volumes are often well in excess of any potential local demand. Understanding ASR technology ensures success in almost all situations ...

Description: Groundwater is Eyre Peninsula's most precious resource and has become the sole source of reticulated water to meet potable and industrial demand. Water resources on Eyre Peninsula are scarce and fragile, particularly in the low rainfall regions, with few reliable freshwater streams and the groundwater availability is highly variable. The groundwater recharge and hence the security of the resource, is highly dependent upon local rainfall, landcover and landuse. Surface water is scarce and unreliable, and reticulated water is limited. Difficulty in accessing water resources has placed both a social and economic burden on the rural community throughout the region. The information contained on the CD will provide a vital framework for the future management planning of the available resources in the region.

Description: Lincoln on Eyre Peninsula. It covers an area of ~70 km2 and comprises all or parts of the Hundreds of Lincoln, Wanilla, Lake Wangary, Uley, Sleaford and Flinders. The boundaries of the area are presented on Figure 1. In general water resources are limited in occurrence throughout the Eyre Peninsula. In the Southern Basins there is very little available surface water with one permanent and two ephemeral saline lakes, and two brackish lakes that feed ephemeral watercourses. However, there are moderately good supplies of groundwater resources, which provide a large part of the reticulated water supply for the Eyre Peninsula. The area is generally characterised by undulating topographic relief typical of an ancient dunal system with dramatic coastal cliffs and large internal drainage catchments. Ground level elevations range from 140 m coastal cliffs to inland depressions reaching near sea level to bedrock highs exceeding 200 m. The area incorporates the Kellidie Bay and Sleaford Mere Conservation Parks and parts of the Lincoln and Coffin Bay National Parks, which are managed under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972. Pursuant to this Act, park management plans have been prepared for the Lincoln and Coffin Bay National Parks and Kellidie Bay Conservation Park ...

Description: The Saunders Creek is a tributary catchment for the River Murray which generates ephemeral flows in very wet years. Concerns have been expressed at the construction of large dams in the headwaters of the catchment, and their impacts on streamflow, and consequently recharge to aquifers. The catchment can be divided into two distinct groundwater regions: the Hills Zone and the Plains Zone. The Hills Zone comprises the consolidated basement rocks of the Mount Lofty Ranges, which form fractured rock aquifers. Borehole yields are generally low and salinities vary, apart from the western portion of the catchment where better quality water is drawn. The Plains Zone is underlain by unconsolidated sediments of the Murray Basin. The main aquifer is the Murray Group Limestone, which is utilised for domestic and stock purposes and is recharged mainly by infiltration of streamflow.

Description: The Noora Prescribed Wells Area (PWA) lies over the deepest part of the Murray Basin in the far eastern boundary of South Australia (Fig. 1). It is bordered to the north by the River Murray, to the east by the South Australia Victoria border, to the south by the southern border of the Hundred of Bookpurnong and the west by a line parallel to and 20 km west from the South Australia Victoria border. Two aquifers are monitored in the Noora PWA: the Pliocene Sands Aquifer (topmost and unconfined) and the confined Murray Group Limestone Aquifer. Both aquifers contain mostly poor quality water with current limited use only for stock, but with potential uses for mining and industry. Groundwater flows in a westerly direction in each aquifer towards the River Murray. A third aquifer underlies the Murray Group Limestone Aquifer: the Renmark Group Aquifer. No current water level data is available for this aquifer system in the Noora PWA and it was therefore omitted from this monitoring report. There have been three main impacts of human settlement on the Noora PWA: land clearance, irrigation and the construction of the Noora Disposal Basin. All three have altered the hydrogeological balance in the Noora PWA by causing a rise in the watertable.

Description: The South Australian Government, through the Department of Water, Land and Biodiversity Conservation (DWLCB) is responsible for the management of the State's groundwater resources. As a part of its role, the DWLCB monitors and maintains an extensive statewide groundwater monitoring network. Ground water monitoring has been undertaken in parts of the South East of South Australia for more than 30 years. The two main parameters used to measure the condition of the groundwater resources are water levels and salinity. Over time, a history of the condition of the aquifers has been established from this baseline information, enabling longer term and short-term changes to be identified and correlated with either natural (e.g. climatic) or man-induced changes (e.g. irrigation, development). This report is compiled for the South East Catchment Water Management Board (SECWMB) and displays a snapshot of data collected for the South East region up until June 2002.

Description: Concerns have been raised about the environmental weed risk of non-indigenous plants promoted for broad scale revegetation and farm forestry purposes in South Australia (SA). Environmental weeds are plant species that invade and dominate natural habitats beyond the species' native range. The wide scale planting of species for revegetation, forestry, agriculture and horticulture increases the likelihood that some species will naturalise (i.e., form a self-sustaining population) and invade native vegetation or other landuse systems. However, analyses of past invasions have shown that the majority of plant species introductions will be of negligible weed risk. In 2001 the PIRSA Revegetation Program and the State Revegetation Committee of South Australia commissioned the Animal and Plant Control Commission (APCC) to undertake a weed risk assessment of 20 plant species. Weed risk assessment is the use of standard, technical criteria to determine the relative weed threats posed by plant species ...

Description: The Mt Lofty Ranges Water Resources Assessment Program is an initiative of the Department of Water, Land and Biodiversity Conservation. The purpose of the Program is to quantify and assess the condition of surface and groundwater resources of the Mt Lofty Ranges Region. The assessments undertaken within the Program include hydrological modelling, reviews of the surface water monitoring network, the construction of new streamflow gauging stations, and the determination of environmental flows. These assessments are undertaken in partnership with other relevant agencies including catchment water management boards, the Environment Protection Authority, and the South Australian Water Corporation. This study is one of several comprehensive hydrological assessments of priority catchments in the region. Being the first, it provides an important technical foundation for collated reports assessing the resources across the region. In turn, these collated reports will inform policy decisions that will be made on future management of the natural resources in the region.

Description: The GRACE dual satellite mission (launched in March, 2002) offers the possibility of computing monthly highly accurate mean gravity fields over an expected lifetime of five years. Unfortunately, the quality of these monthly gravity field products does not yet reach the pre-launch expectations. Possible error sources might be insufficient instrument data processing and parameterization or modeling of short-term atmospheric and oceanic mass variations. Another candidate is the ocean tide model. Especially, incomplete subtraction (de-aliasing) of short period tides may be partially aliased into the monthly gravity field solutions. Therefore, we analyzed the difference of two ocean tide models (FES2004 and CSR 4.0) which are used at the GRACE Science Data System level-2 processing centers at GFZ Potsdam and CSR (Center for Space Research, Austin), respectively, and which may serve as a measure of the ocean tide model error. We have computed: a) straightforward monthly means of tidal elevation differences and b) simulations of tidal elevation differences at footpoints of GRACE A. The results of a) represent the differences of the monthly means of both tide models with respect to an uniform sampling (grid). The results of b) include the influence of spatially uneven sampling distribution (only along the orbit) and show that for the S2 and K2 tidal constituents, aliasing causes effects which cannot be neglected with respect to the presently achievable GRACE measurement accuracy for degrees n.le.7 (S2) and n.le.8 (K2).

Description: This study is concerned with the forward modelling of the present-day glacial-isostatic adjustment (GIA) of the earth to present and past changes of the Antarctic ice sheet (AIS). We predict temporal variations in the geoid height and topographic height within the context of the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission and terrestrial Global Positioning System (GPS) stations in Antarctica. We first adopt an elastic-compressible earth model and calculate the earth's response to seasonal (〈 1 a) and secular (~ 100 a) ice-mass changes. Then, we consider a viscoelastic-incompressible earth model and determine the earth's response to the melting of the AIS since the last glacial maximum (LGM), i.e. the post-glacial rebound (PGR). Both models are radially symmetric and self gravitating. A range of viscosity values account for the uncertainty in the viscosity stratification and the lateral heterogeneity of the mantle beneath Antarctica. We employ six load models simulating the most important temporal aspects of the AIS's evolution. Finally, we predict the geoid-height change and the land uplift and compare them with recent GRACE observations and determinations of the uplift rate for the permanent GPS stations along the Antarctic coast.

This study aims, by the use of incrementally-balanced crosssections, interpretation of reflection-seismic profiles, 3D strain analysis, gravity data interpretation, isotopic-age dating, and surface observations, to reconstruct the geological and tectonic history of the Southern Altiplano at 21o S between the Eastern and the Western Cordillera. The Southern Altiplano is a complex intramontane basin with 6-8km Cenozoic fill. It can be structurally divided in three domains; the Eastern, Central, and Western Altiplano. 2D balanced cross-sections based on seismic-reflector analysis and field observations show that the Eastern Altiplano is the buried, thin-skinned deformation front of the western part of the Eastern Cordillera's bivergent thrust system. The 20-40ʿ dipping, blind faults merge into a shallow, eastward-dipping detachment at 7-9km depth that continues into the Eastern Cordillera. The Central Altiplano forms a bivergent system with 30-90ʿ dipping, basement-involving thrusts in the east, and fault-propagation folds in the west. The shallow, westward-dipping detachment lies at 9-10km depth and possibly continues into the Western Altiplano, which forms a separate bivergent thrust-system.The computer-aided (GeoSec and 2DMove), incremental restoration of the balanced crosssections of the Eastern and Central Altiplano, and preliminary line-length balancing of the Western Altiplano, yields 38km shortening due to folding and thrusting ...
