    Description: Cruise SO299 DYNAMET from Townsville (Australia) to Singapore aimed at studying the links between geodynamics (regional-scale plate tectonics, local structural geology and volcanism) and metallogeny with a special emphasis on the Au-rich mineralisation on and in the vicinity of Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea. The research programme started on 13th June and ended on 15 th July 2023, totalling to 32.5 working days within the Exclusive Economic Zone of Papua New Guinea and international waters. Underway hydroacoustic and gravity data were additionally recorded in international waters during the transit towards Singapore. The three main working areas targeted the New Ireland Basin at the newly discovered Karambusel vent field (Conical Seamount) and Mussel Cliff, the Weitin Fault area south of New Ireland, and the Mussau Ridge. We performed 〉4,800 kilometers of hydroacoustic (multibeam echosounder and sub-bottom profiler) and gravimetric surveys, twelve dives with the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) KIEL 6000 from GEOMAR, 16 stations with the TV-guided grab, 20 chain bag dredge and 20 heat flow stations. We recovered a total of 447 rock and 346 sediment samples and took 570 individual gas and fluid samples. We deployed and recovered 18 ocean bottom seismometers (OBS) and 16 ocean bottom magneto-telluric (OBMT) instruments in the vicinity of Lihir island. The wealth of samples and data collected during the cruise and complemented by a variety of geophysical, petrological and geochemical analyses post-cruise will aid the development of a new spatial and temporal model of the magmatic and hydrothermal evolution in response to recent plate tectonic changes.

    Description: The Red Sea is an important example of a continental rift transitioning slowly to an oceanic basin. However, structures that can inform us of how that transition occurred have been poorly reported because deep seismic reflection data capable of imaging basement under the rift sediments are generally lacking publicly. Three lines of multichannel seismic reflection data have recently been published revealing structures on the Nubian side of the central part of the basin. In this study, we reassess these data in the light of recent studies of the central Red Sea. Over continental crust, the data reveal reflection sequences likely due to strata at or near the base of the evaporites, in two cases with varied dips suggesting the presence of syn-rift growth stratigraphy. Almost all of those reflections dip downwards towards the rift axis, not away as would be expected from tilted fault blocks of bookshelf faulting types. That observation, and low relief of basement, confirm inferences made earlier based on gravity anomalies that this part of the Red Sea lacks large-relief fault escarpments and is most likely a syn-rift sag basin. In the transition to oceanic crust, an abnormally broad magnetic anomaly of estimated Chron 5 age is found not to be associated with structures such as sills, so it likely arises from deeper sources. One of the seismic lines traverses a ridge in Bouguer gravity anomalies that runs across the axis. This feature has previously been interpreted as a volcanic ridge similar to those observed at other ultra-slow spreading ridges. The seismic data reveal diffuse basement reflections and confirm that the record immediately above basement lacks reflections typical of sedimentary strata. Both observations are consistent with the presence of oceanic crust. Modelling of gravity anomalies suggests the ridge is likely underlain by igneous intrusive rocks displacing mantle rocks, as expected for a volcanic ridge. The seismic data, combined with recently updated multibeam and high-resolution sparker seismic results, further suggest how the evaporite movements have been modulated by basement topography. These results add to our knowledge of the evaporite movements and continent-ocean transition structures in the central Red Sea.

    Description: Three volcanic arcs have been the source of New Zealand's volcanic activity since the Neogene: Northland arc, Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ) and Taupō Volcanic Zone (TVZ). The eruption chronology for the Quaternary, sourced by the TVZ, is well studied and established, whereas the volcanic evolution of the precursor arc systems, like the CVZ (central activity c. 18 to 2 Ma), is poorly known due to limited accessibility to, or identification of, onshore volcanic deposits and their sources. Here, we investigate the marine tephra record of the Neogene, mostly sourced by the CVZ, of cores from IODP Exp. 375 (Sites U1520 and U1526), ODP Leg 181 (Sites 1123, 1124 and 1125), IODP Leg 329 (Site U1371) and DSDP Leg 90 (Site 594) offshore of New Zealand. In total, we identify 306 primary tephra layers in the marine sediments. Multi-approach age models (e.g. biostratigraphy, zircon ages) are used in combination with geochemical fingerprinting (major and trace element compositions) and the stratigraphic context of each marine tephra layer to establish 168 tie-lines between marine tephra layers from different holes and sites. Following this approach, we identify 208 explosive volcanic events in the Neogene between c. 17.5 and 2.6 Ma. This is the first comprehensive study of New Zealand's Neogene explosive volcanism established from tephrochronostratigraphic studies, which reveals continuous volcanic activity between c. 12 and 2.6 Ma with an abrupt compositional change at c. 4.5 Ma, potentially associated with the transition from CVZ to TVZ.     Description: Mapping and sampling four sections of the slow-spreading Reykjanes Ridge provide insight into how tectonic and volcanic activity varies with distance from the Iceland plume. The studied areas are characterized by significant variations in water depth, lava chemistry, crustal thickness, thermal structure, and ridge morphology. For each study area, fault pattern and dimension, tectonic strain, seamount morphology, and density are inferred from 15 m-resolution bathymetry. These observations are combined with geochemical analysis from glass samples and sediment thickness estimations along Remotely Operated Vehicle-dive videos. They reveal that (a) tectonic and volcanic activity along the Reykjanes Ridge, do not systematically vary with distance from the plume center. (b) The tectonic geometry appears directly related to the deepening of the brittle/ductile transition and the maximum change in tectonic strain related to the rapid change in crustal thickness and the transition between axial-high and axial valley (∼59.5°N). (c) Across-axis variations in the fault density and sediment thickness provide similar widths for the neo-volcanic zone except in regions of increased seamount emplacement. (d) The variations in seamount density (especially strong for flat-topped seamounts) are not related to the distance from the plume but appear to be correlated with the interaction between the V-shape ridges (VSR) flanking the ridge and the ridge axis. These observations are more compatible with the buoyant upwelling melting instability hypothesis for VSR formation and suggest that buoyant melting instabilities create many small magma batches which by-pass the normal subaxial magmatic plumbing system, erupting over a wider-than-normal area.     Description: The transition toward renewables is central to climate action. The paper empirically tests whether renewables also enhance international peace, a hypothesis discussed in the International Political Economy (IPE) of renewables literature. It develops and tests hypotheses about the pacifying effects of renewables, with a view to establishing the foundations for analyzing more detailed causal mechanisms. These mechanisms rest on the ‘energy democracy’ debate, suggesting that a low carbon world sees less interstate tension thanks to more states being democratic; the ‘capitalist peace’ theorem, establishing that the deployment of renewables brings about economic development, reducing conflict; and the human security literature, positing that renewables reduce local-level reduce vulnerabilities, thus enhancing social stability and reducing violence. Using a longitudinal dataset on global renewable energy investment, econometric tests suggest that distributed renewable energy systems do not seem to foster democratic rule, nor do they have a significant influence on human development. Countering the energy democracy literature, it is a higher concentration of renewable investment that tends to increase stability/ absence of violence and human development, instead of decentralized investment patterns. We find no evidence for the ‘peace through prosperity’ argument. Overall, there is no support for the assumption that renewables bring about peace and reduce conflict. The paper critically discusses the limitations of these findings and suggests further avenues for empirical research.

    Description: The complexity and importance of environmental, societal, and other challenges require new forms of science and practice collaboration. We first describe the complementarity of method-driven, theory-based, and (to the extent possible) validated scientific knowledge in contrast to real-world, action-based, and contextualized experimental knowledge. We argue that a thorough integration of these two modes of knowing is necessary for developing ground-breaking innovations and transitions for sustainable development. To reorganize types of science–practice collaborations, we extend Stokes’s Pasteur’s quadrant with its dimensions for the relevance of (i) (generalized) fundamental knowledge and (ii) applications when introducing (iii) process ownership, i.e., who controls the science–practice collaboration process. Process ownership is a kind of umbrella variable which comprises leadership (with the inflexion point of equal footing or co-leadership) and mutuality (this is needed for knowledge integration and developing socially robust orientations) which are unique selling points of transdisciplinarity. The extreme positions of process ownership are applied research (science takes control) and consulting (practice takes process ownership). Ideal transdisciplinary processes include authentic co-definition, co-representation, co-design, and co-leadership of science and practice. We discuss and grade fifteen approaches on science–practice collaboration along the process ownership scale and reflect on the challenges to make transdisciplinarity real.

    Description: In 2022, the Russian invasion of Ukraine had a profound effect on EU energy and climate policies. The EU redesigned its approach to the geopolitics of energy security as it sought alternatives to Russian supplies with accelerated urgency. It upgraded its commitments to energy transition internally and through external actions too, whilst member states balanced these with the domestic politics of a cost-of-living crisis triggered by the war. The new era of geopolitical power had repercussions for the conceptual contours of EU approaches to energy and climate security, which were elevated to hard security issues. The article reviews the key developments in EU energy and climate policies in 2022 and notes three emerging and inter-related conceptual shifts in these: the securitization of the green transition, a more realpolitik approach to external climate actions and a rebalancing towards state intervention.

    Description: There has been a recent proliferation of research and practice on the interior dimensions of sustainability, such as values, beliefs, worldviews and inner capacities. This nascent field of inner transformation is dynamic and emerging, with varied terminology, a breadth of applications, and intense debate about possible contributions as well as limitations and shortcomings. In this article, we aim to provide some orientation by systematising the core contributions of the emerging domain of inner transformation research via the acronym IMAGINE. We show that ontologically, inner transformation research highlights (i) the Interdependence of inner/outer and individual/collective/system phenomena, as well as (ii) the Multiple potential that is latent within each of us to enable transformative change. Correspondingly, it underscores the implications of inner phenomena for sustainability and related action-taking, particularly through: (iii) the Activation of inner dimensions across individual, collective and system levels, and (iv) the Generation of inner transformative capacities through intentional practices. Epistemologically, this necessitates the (v) INclusion of diverse perspectives, required for (vi) Expanding knowledge systems for sustainability. The presented heuristic offers a framework to systematically support and guide sustainability researchers, educators and practitioners to incorporate inner transformation into their work, which is a key requirement for sustainability outcomes and necessary to effectively formulate related policy frameworks.
