Description / Table of Contents: The book by E. I. Saruhanian, N. P. Smirnov "Water masses and circulation of the South Ocean" deals with the formation, localization and spreading of the South Ocean water masses, the methods of marking them out by an indication complex. The main features of the South Ocean circulation determined on the basis of geostrophic calculations and those based on the diagnostic model, and also characteristics derived from the data of drifting buoys are described. The analysis of spatial structure and changeability of the Antarctic circumpolar current and connected frontal polar zone is given on the basis of the data obtained in different South Ocean regions during conduction of the multiscale scientific experiments according to the programmes "Polar experiment - South" and "International South Ocean Research" in 1975-1982.

Description / Table of Contents: Modelling of the Glaciers-Ocean-Atmosphere system by M. Ya. Verbitsky and D. V. Chalikov presents an earth's climate model based on one-dimensional non-steady thermohydrodynamical equations for the atmosphere, ocean, glaciers, and the asthenosphere. The model takes into account the main mechanisms responsible for the formation of global climate, but it is simple enough to allow simulation of climate evolution for a period up to one million years. The present climate is reconstructed, sensitivity of the system to changes in the initial conditions is investigated and evidence for non-uniqueness of climate for the present distribution of the continents is obtained. Climate sensitivity to changes in the isolation is calculated. Oscillations of climate similar to the Pleistocene ice ages are modelled. Climatic conditions for the Late Mesozoic and Late Pleistozoic are estimated. The book is intended for specialists on climate, oceanologists, meteorologists, glaciologists and also for students of appropriate specialities.

Description / Table of Contents:
Description / Table of Contents: In November 1969, a group of young specialists from the Arctic and Antarctic State landed on an ice island drifting in the north of the East Siberian Sea. A 35-meter-thick Qsrut was 14 kilometers long and 8 kilometers wide. It seemed that no force in nature was capable of crushing this giant ice monolith. But something happened that no one could have expected ... All the vicissitudes of the SP-19 expedition were described by its participants in the book "Ice Island Underfoot", published in 1972 by the "Young Guard". The new edition includes original notes preserved in the diaries and archives of the authors and for one reason or another were not included in the first edition. For a wide range of readers.

Description / Table of Contents: The book "Mathematical modelling of general circulation of the atmosphere and ocean" (G. I. Marchuk, V. P. Dymnikov, V. N. Lykossov, V. B. Zalesny, V. Ya. Galin) contains the sistematic description of the mathematical and physical aspects of the problem of general circulation atmosphere and ocean modelling, beginning from the governing equations to the analysis of numerical experiments and programme realization on the different generation computers. The problems of sub-grid processes parametrization methods and the sensitivity of the models to the parametrization of the cloud-radiation interaction, large-scale condensation processes parametrization of the boundary layer are also considered in the book. The book is intended for the experts in numerical and applied mathematics, geophysical hydrodynamics as well as students of universities, concerned with numerical methods of the ocean and the atmosphere simulation.

Description / Table of Contents:
Description / Table of Contents: Translation of the abstract: The book provides a detailed and versatile description of the main genetic types of Alas soils. The influence of thermokarst alas formation on the soil-forming process was revealed. The results obtained allow us to consider alas soils as independent types, the occurrence of which is associated with a peculiar alas process, inherent only in thermokarst landscapes. For the first time the features of the structure of the soil cover of the alas were characterized and the reasons for its differentiation were revealed. The book is intended for soil scientists, land reclamators, agrochemists, as well as for other agricultural specialists and design organizations involved in the use and development of land in the area of widespread permafrost.

Description / Table of Contents: The essays in this volume cover: the materials which may be recognizably preserved for varying periods of time or whose presence in certain deposits may be inferred from characteristic products of their diagenesis; how and to what extent these materials or diagenetic products may be used to reconstruct the flora of a lake basin, its catchment area or regions further away; the reliability or fallibility of chemical, physical or biological methods of analysis, where materials come from, to what extent they are homogeneously or heterogeneously deposited after arrival in a lake basin and whether the latter situation arises ab initio or is the result of later perturbations; the various direct or indirect methods of dating deposits, even on a global scale, and stress, strain and stability in lacustrine environments. Some chapters are devoted to reconstruction of the past during certain periods of time in given localities but in all the chapters the matters considered and views expressed are related to previous work done in various parts of the world. The book will be of value to all concerned with the past and present environment, botany, ecology, hydrology, and geography. The reference sections provide a comprehensive bibliography of palaeolimnological and related literature.

Description / Table of Contents: This is the first attempt at compiling a comprehensive glossary of glaciology and related Earth sciences. The wordstock of this edition amounts to 2200 terms covering all types of snow and natural ice: snowcover, avalanches, sea, river, and lake ice, ground ice and aufice, as well as such phenomena as glacial mudflows. The entries contain definitions of terms with explicit references to related processes and phenomena. The glossary is provided with many figures and sample reference material. The glossary is considered for specialists in glaciology, hydrology, meteorology, climatology, geography, geophysics, and geology. It may serve as a textbook for university students ans as a manual for the highschool teachers.
