Description / Table of Contents: In the middle of the 19th century, Alexander Theodor von Middendorff - a baltic-german scientist of Estonian descent - led an expedition to the nothernmost place of the Eurasian continent, the Taimyr Peninsula. According to the spirits of his time, being equally adept in etnology, botany and zoology, Middendorff made numerous scientific discoveries and first-time scientifc descriptions of local culture, flora, fauna and climate, establishing himself firmly among famous explorers of the North. 150 years later, Middendorff's journey was re-traced by a team of Estonian scientists, with a goal to record the changes occured in the region.

Description / Table of Contents: This monograph is devoted to modern considerations on geochemistry of rare earth elements (REE) in the ocean. Chemical properties of REE which determine their migration ability in natural processes and REE sources are presented. The REE behavior in the river water-seawater mixing zone is analyzed, as well as fractionation of dissolved and particulate REE in the oceanic water in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. It is shown that the variability of REE composition in pelagic sediments reflects their fractionation in oceanic water, as a consequence of material differentiation in the ocean. REE distribution in terrigenous, authigenic, hydrothermal and biogenic constituents of sediments is considered, including clay minerals, bone debris, barite, phillipsite, iron and manganese oxyhydroxides (ferromanganese nodules and micronodules), iron-calcium hydroxophosphate, diatoms and foraminifers. For geologists, geochemists and oceanologists.

Description / Table of Contents: The role of Antarctica in global geodynamics continues to be critical not only to understanding major processes of supercontinent assembly and dispersal, but also for assessing the implications of these processes in determining global change through time. What is the history of the Antarctic ice volume? How does ice volume relate to ocean characteristics and sea-level changes? What are the major sediment sources on the Antarctic continental margins? Was Antarctica a key place for evolution of biotas? These, among others, are key questions to which many Antarctic studies are presently adressed, and no one now doubts the crucial importance of the Antarctic ice, and of sediments on the continent and the surrounding sea floor, as archives of past and recent global climatic change. This volume contains over 160 peer-reviewed papers representative more than 400 contributions presented during VII International Symposium on Antarctic Earth Sciences, held in Siena (Italy) from 10 to 15 September 1995. As the title of the volume, "The Antarctic Region: geological evolution and processes", emphasizes, its content extends geographically beyond the area of the continent to include the peri-Antarctic seas and the surrounding oceanic regions. Marine, terrestrial, glaciological and atmospheric realms are all addressed, and the role of Antarctica in the global system, from Archean through Holocene time is considered. Beside the classical themes of geological and geophysical exploration of the continent, new topics concerning the 'soft' geological materials are subjects of hot debate in this volume.

Description / Table of Contents: Mongolia is an expansive land-locked country, tilted by tectonic forces to the North, that experiences extremes of continental climate. Moisture-carrying wind currents are scarce so that the land has extended highs and lows in its environment. Culturally the people are mostly nomadic, having been sustained for centuries by an economic based on domestic livestock grazing. There is a saying that, "As the noses go, so goes Mongolia", referring to the domesticated grazing noses of sheep, goats, camels, yaks or horses, and wild ungulates such as gazelles. The vast fenceless steppes of Mongolia furnish the vegetation for grazing. With such extremes in climate it is clear that the vegetation must be resilient and dynamic to cope with the dictates of its extremely harsh environments. Pollen profiles from lakes, plant microfossils and other data over the last 15,000 years show the dynamic nature of Mongolian vegetation. Currently Mongolian society is experiencing much human-driven economic development which increases pressure on its vegetation. The Great Khural Laws of 1995 forcefully addressed such environmental concerns with the expanded establishment of National Reserves and Parks. But continued effort and vigilance must be expended to insure that Mongolian society will continue to be sustained by its vegetation. This book highlights work such as conserving and restoring plant diversity in various ecosystems and makes recommendations for sustaining the vegetation basis of the nomadic Mongolian society.

Description / Table of Contents: An understanding of the changing relationships within systems is an integral part of the study of a variety of disciplines. The second edition of Dynamic Modeling gives a thorough introduction to modeling by teaching the reader both to build and to use a wide range of models, including those for biological, physical, social and economic systems. In conjunction with the STELLA software provided with the book, the reader has an easy-to-use tool to visualize all types of dynamic systems. Even more examples of theory and applications from the modeling community have been added to the second edition. For example, the authors have expanded their treatment of population cohort models and then applied it to the dynamics of the U.S. population. They have enriched the discussion of positive feedbacks, enlarged the section on genetics, and provided more applications to the study of diseases. The economics section of the book includes models from game theory and market dynamics that result from the combined effects of inventory changes and producer expectations. The set of engineering models of gravity and acceleration also includes examples of mechanical amplifiers, which are illustrated by the workings of a playground swing. With each model discussed, the book emphasizes the need to learn the concepts and tools of the model for the purpose of generating new insights, streamlining the problem-solving process, and fostering creative thinking and modeling in other areas in inquiry as well. In addition to the new topics, many chapters have been revised and updated to make more extensive use of the new model-development features of STELLA. All models and a run-time version of the STELLA software are included with the book on a CD-ROM, which is compatible with both Macintosh and Windows platforms.

Description / Table of Contents: The Southern Ocean strongly interacts with the atmosphere and with glacial ice, sea ice and the sea floor over the immense and productive Antarctic continental shelf and slope. Water masses transformed and ventilated there subsequently influence the properties and circulation of the deep global ocean. In this latest oceanology volume of the Antarctic Research Series, polar scientists describe and model air-sea and ice-ocean interactions, the formation and chemistry of deep and bottom waters, regional circulations, tidal heights and currents, ocean bathymetry, interannual variability and the Antarctic Slope Front. With international authorship and interdisciplinary scope, this compilation and the related volumes Antarctic Sea Ice physical processes and Antarctic Sea Ice biological processes also cover the impacts of ice crystals and icebergs, sea ice biology and geophysics, and the important roles of sea ice in atmospheric and oceanographic processes.

Description / Table of Contents: This is an up-to-date textbook on meteorology ond climatology with a fresh, unconventional view of the workings of the climate system, in which the author poses serious questions about the validity of certain aspects of current global warming theory. The book is divided into three parts. In Part I the author discusses general circulation in the troposphere. He argues that such circulation is driven by thermal deficil at the poles, causing Moving Polar Highs (MPHsl, which have the principal role of feeding cold air towards the tropics, This in turn causes warm air to move up towards the poles. The relief and distribution of land masses, and the Earth's rotation, control the trajectories of the MPHs, and the formation of Anticyclonic Agglutinations (AAs). The latter determine the properties of tropical circulation, the trade winds, and tropical monsoons. These discussions lead, in Part II, 10 a consideration of the dynamics of the weather through the study of perturbations, including precipitation, the role of MPHs in polar and temperate regions and at tropical margins, pulsations in the trade winds and monsoons, the concept of the meteorologIcal Equator, and tropical cyclones. Part Ill reviews the causes of climatic variations, including solar activity, variations relating to the Earth's orbit and axial inclination, volcanic eruptions and the anthropogenic greenhouse effect. The book concludes with a discussion of Palaeoclimatic variations and recent climatic evolution, including the Sahelian drought, changes in polar and alpine glaciers, and the El Niño/Southern Oscillation,

Description / Table of Contents: The last decade has been a period of rapid advances in glacier hydrology and hydrochemistry. These have resulted from the application of new technologies to the direct observation of englacial and subglacial drainage systems via boreholes, from theoretical advances and from increased interactions between fieldworkers and modellers. This collection of papers captures the spirit of these advances highlighting new methodologies, the change in character of hydrological models from lumped conceptual models to physically based, distributed models, and the changing role of field studies in glacier hydrological investigations. Major themes identified in the book are: approaches to defining the structure of drainage systems in cold and temperate glaciers; investigations of the linkages between surface and subsurface components of these systems, and of hydraulic interactions between different elements of subglacial systems; seasonal changes in drainage systems properties at local and glacier wide scales; and problems of scaling up results from studies of valley glaciers to the ice sheet scale.

Description / Table of Contents: This volume - the second of six - continues the first comprehensive English-language flora of the Russian Arctic. Flora of the Russian Arctic translates Arkticheskaya Flora SSSR, the authoritative work of botanists of the Komarov Botanical Institute prepared under the editorship of A. I. Tolmachev and B. A. Yurtsev. This unexcerpted translation was prepared by distinguished systematist G. C. D. Griffiths under the editorship of J. G. Packer, Professor Emeritus of Botany at the University of Alberta. It represents the first time this work has been made available in a language other than Russian. This second volume of Flora of the Russian Arctic describes the six families her listed. Together, the six volumes in the series will treat some 360 genera, 1650 species and 220 infraspecific taxa, including many new combinations and previously undescribed species and subspecies. The original distribution maps and detailed keys to genera and species complement the species discussions. The Russian Arctic spans 145 degrees of longitude, from the Barents Sea to the Bering Strait. The comprehensive content and accomplished scholarship of this work, along with the size of the area covered, make Flora of the Russian Arctic an essential part of any botanical library.
