    Description: The Pliocene to Pleistocene Series in each sedimentary basin or area of Japan has been investigated and described; however, their stratigraphic correlation is difficult because of complex geological structures. Regional stratigraphy has therefore been established using many intercalated tephra beds, i.e. by correlating tephra beds between distant areas. A standardized stratigraphic model of the Pliocene to Middle Pleistocene Series in Japan is put forward in this paper on the basis of tephrostratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy, and biostratigraphy. This stratigraphic model is important for studies of environmental changes and explosive volcanism in this period around the Japanese island-arc.

    Description: We reanalyzed 3D seismic reflection and logging-while-drilling data from the toe of the northern Barbados accretionary prism to interpret structure, deformation, and fluid flow related to subduction processes. The seafloor amplitude and coherence reveal an abrupt change in the thrust orientation from NNE at the thrust front and north and NNW about 5 km west of the thrust front. These thrust sets are separated by a triangular-shaped quiet area, which may represent a zone of low strength. The northeast-trending band of strong negative amplitude and high coherence in the décollement, known to be an interval of arrested consolidation, overlaps the quiet area, suggesting that the arrested consolidation may be related to the lack of thrust imbrication, and thus, vertical drainage for fluid in the accretionary prism. Fractal analysis of the décollement and top of the subducting oceanic basement indicates that the relief of the décollement correlates with the topography of the oceanic basement. Differential compaction of the underthrust sediment overlying the rugged oceanic basement, together with the basement faults that penetrate into the décollement probably caused relief or even faulting in the décollement.

    Description: The transformation of smectite-group clay minerals to illite has garnered considerable interest as a potentially important process affecting both the mechanical and hydrologic behavior of subduction zones. Illitization can generate fluid overpressure by release of bound water, and the mineralogical change and associated cementation may increase intrinsic frictional strength while decreasing the sliding stability of faults. Released bound water also contributes to pore water freshening observed in boreholes at numerous margins. Here the authors combine data from Ocean Drilling Program drill sites along two transects at the Nankai subduction zone with numerical models of smectite transformation, to (i) quantify the distribution of smectite transformation and fluid production downdip of the trench; and (ii) evaluate its hydrologic and mechanical implications. High heat flow (ca 180 mW/m2) along the axis of the Kinan Seamount Chain (Muroto transect) initiates clay mineral transformation outboard of the trench, whereas lower heat flow (70–120 mW/m2) 100 km to the SW (Ashizuri transect) results in negligible presubduction diagenesis. As a result, considerably more bound fluid is subducted along the Ashizuri transect; simulated peak fluid sources down-dip of the trench are considerably higher than for the Muroto transect (ca 1.2–1.3 × 10−14/s vs ca 6 × 10−15/s), and are shifted ca 10 km further from the trench. More generally, sensitivity analysis illustrates that heat flow, taper angle, incoming sediment thickness, and plate convergence rate all systematically affect reaction progress and the distribution of bound water release down-dip of the trench. These shifts in the loci and volume of fluid release are important for constraining fluid flow pathways, and provide insight into the links between clay transformation and fault mechanics.

    Description: Changes in North Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) are regarded as a key element of the climate during the Quaternary. However, there are relatively few long-term records providing quantitative SST estimates from this region. Using planktic foraminiferal-derived SSTs together with changes on species level and iceberg-rafted debris, the last 500 ka were studied. Pronounced SST changes, as determined from the last glacial–interglacial cycle, characterize most colder periods. Peak interglacial temperatures were found for marine isotope stages (MIS) 1, 5e and 11, the latter two being the warmest. The warm substages within MIS 7 and 9 are marked by enhanced dissimilarity coefficients, indicating that SSTs obtained for these times appear to be overestimated. This is corroborated by differences within the species assemblage, which show enhanced cold water components. It is therefore concluded that detailed analysis down to species level is a crucial prerequisite to better reconstructions of SST.

    Notes: Abstract The 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu Earthquake (Mw 6.9) occurred in the region around Kobe City and Awaji Island in south-west Japan. Co-seismic liquefaction caused subsidence of the land and damage to sea wall caissons on the man-made Port Island at Kobe City. A zone 2–3 m wide behind the caissons of the northern wharf on the island subsided into the intertidal zone and a sandy deposit settled into this subsided zone. The depos-it consists of upward-fining sequences that are subdivided into three parts, in ascending order: graded coarse- to medium-grained sand, parallel-laminated fine- to very-fine-grained sand, and massive mud. Grain fabric analysis (employing the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility method and microscopic measurement) of these sequences shows that there is a remarkable contrast in grain fabric between the lowest portion of the graded sand division and the laminated sand division. The former has a high q-value (magnetic lineation/foliation) and a unimodal orientation of elongate grains in the horizontal plane, but random orientation in the vertical plane. Conversely, the latter is characterized by a low q-value and a grain fabric in which the long axes of the grains have random orientations and are nearly parallel to the plane of deposition. This result shows that the main depositional processes changed from a combination of flow and allied processes to the force of gravity. As still water is essential for gravity to be the dominant factor in deposition, this deposit is regarded as subaqueous sand blow deposits. If this interpretation is correct, the grain fabric produced by gravity alone is a useful criterion for distinguishing between subaqueous sand blow deposits and other liquefaction-induced deposits.

    Notes: Abstract The initial volcanic phase of Cretaceous island arc strata in central Puerto Rico, at the eastern end of the extinct Greater Antilles Arc, comprises a 6-km thick pile of lava and volcanic breccia (Río Majada Group). Preserved within the sequence is a conspicuous shift in absolute abundances of the more incompatible elements, including Th, Nb, and the light rare earth elements (LREE: La, Ce, Pr and Nd). The compositional shift is marked by a decrease in La/Sm from averages of 2.11 in the lowest third of the pile (Formation A) to 1.48 at the top (Formation C), and by a distinctive flattening of LREE segments of chondrite-normalized REE patterns. i87Sr/86Sr and ɛNd average about 0.7035 and 8.2, respectively, in early Formation A basalts. These ranges normally overlap samples from later Formations B and C. Isotope compositions of the latter group are more variable, however, and several samples are considerably more radiogenic than Formation A basalts, such that i87Sr/86Sr averages almost 0.7042 while ɛNd-values decrease to 7.5 in Formation B and C basalts. Theoretical models of non-modal melting processes in both amphibole peridotite and spinel lherzolite sources provide insight into the origin of depleted Th, Nb, and LREE abundances in Puerto Rican basalts. Low Nb concentrations less than normal mid-oceanic ridge basalts in Formation A basalts indicate the wedge was slightly depleted by low-volume decompression fusion due to induced convection in the back-arc region prior to entry of the source into the arc melting zone. However, depleted patterns in Formation C basalts cannot be generated by relatively greater degrees of decompression fusion in the back-arc, because addition of the La-enriched slab-derived component to more depleted source material invariably produces elevated rather than decreased La/Sm. Refluxing of Formation A harzburgitic residua is similarly precluded. In contrast, the observed patterns are readily reproduced by multistage melting models involving hybridized sources containing normal Formation A lherzolite source material blended with recycled, unrefluxed harzburgite residua. Successful models require hybrid sources containing large volumes of recycled harzburgite (up to 50%) during generation of Formation C basalts. Slightly elevated radiometric Sr and Nd isotopes in a few flows from Formation C are attributed to partial refluxing of the hybrid sources within the wedge.

    Notes: Abstract We present chemical and Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic compositions of three Triassic (226–241 Ma) calc-alkaline granitoids (the Yeongdeok granite, Yeonghae diorite and Cheongsong granodiorite) and basement rocks in the northern Gyeongsang basin, south-eastern Korea. These plutons exhibit typical geochemical characteristics of I-type granitoids generated in a continental magmatic arc. The Yeongdeok and Yeonghae plutons have similar initial Sr, Nd and Pb isotope ratios (87Sr/86Srinitial = 0.7041 ~ 0.7050, ɛNd(t) = 2.3 ~ 4.0, 206Pb/204Pbfeldspar = 18.22 ~ 18.34), but distinct rare earth element patterns, suggesting that the two plutons formed from partial melting of a similar source material at different depths. The Cheongsong pluton has slightly more enriched Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic compositions (87Sr/86Srinitial = 0.7047 ~ 0.7065, ɛNd(t) = 3.9 ~ 2.8, 206Pb/204Pbfeldspar = 18.24 ~ 18.37) than the other two plutons. The Nd model ages of the basement rocks (1.1 ~ 1.4 Ga) are slightly older than those of the plutons (0.6 ~ 1.0 Ga). The initial Sr and Nd isotopic ratios of the plutons can be modeled by the mixing between the mid-oceanic ridge basalt-like depleted mantle component and the crustal component represented by basement rocks, which is also supported by Pb isotope data. The Sr and Nd isotope data from granitoids and basement rocks suggest that the Gyeongsang basin, the Hida belt and the inner zone of south-western Japan share relatively young basement histories (middle Proterozoic), compared with those (early Proterozoic to Archean) of the Gyeonggi and Yeongnam massifs and the Okcheon belt. The Nd isotope data of basement rocks suggest that the Hida belt might be better correlated with the basement of the Gyeongsang basin than the Gyeonggi massif, the Okcheon belt or the Yeongnam massif, although it may represent an older continental margin of East Asia than the Gyeongsang basin considering its slightly older Nd model ages.

    Notes: Abstract The Lesnaya Group is part of a thick, poorly dated turbidite assemblage that sits in the footwall of a regionally extensive collision zone in which the Cretaceous–Paleocene Olutorsky island arc terrane was obducted onto continental margin basin strata. Nannoplankton from 18 samples from the upper part of the Lesnaya Group yield Paleocene through Middle Eocene assemblages. Detrital zircons from nine sandstone samples have a young population of fission-track ages that range from 43.7 ± 3.4 to 55.5 ± 3.5 Ma (uppermost Paleocene to Middle Eocene). The deformed footwall rocks of the Lesnaya Group and the overlying thrusts of the Olutorsky arc terrane, are unconformably overlain by neoautochthonous deposits which are Lutetian (lower Middle Eocene) and younger. Together, these new data indicate that thrusting, which is inferred to have been driven by collision of the Cretaceous–Paleocene island arc with north-eastern Asia, took place in the mid-Lutetian, at about 45 Ma.

    Notes: Abstract High-resolution seismic stratigraphy of the Yamato Basin, Japan Sea, was successfully established using core-log-seismic data integration. The construction of synthetic seismograms by the combination of physical properties and well-log data from the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 797 was the key to accomplishing the high-resolution seismic stratigraphy. To achieve resolution comparable with well-log data and core lithology, single channel seismic reflection data taken from ODP underway geophysics were reprocessed, and then carefully compared with synthetic seismogram, core and well log profiles to identify seismic units. Ten seismic stratigraphic units were identified at the site, and seismic stratigraphic interpretation was successfully extended from the site to the nearby area along the Yamato Basin margin. The opal-A/opal-CT (biogenic silica/metastable diagenetic silica) boundary has different appearances at places from strong to weak, and mostly discontinuous. One of the significant results achieved from this study is clear distinction of the opal-A/CT boundary from a very strong reflector, which appears at 22 m below the opal-A/CT boundary. Through well-log and physical properties characterization of the different units, resistivity was found to be the best indicator of diatom content and with gamma-ray it also is an indicator of chert layers in the opal-CT zone. Velocity is not greatly effected by diatom ooze in the opal-A zone, however, it shows strong peaks and has an indirect relationship with gamma-ray in the opal-CT zone. Finally, successful correlation of Gamma-ray Attenuation Porosity Evaluator density and resistivity peaks with strong seismic reflectors from upper and lower stratified layers may provide new information on the late Neogene paleoceanography of the Japan Sea in high-resolution scale.

    Notes: Abstract Meso- and microscale structural analyses were carried out in the Hatagawa shear zone, north-eastern Japan. The shear zone is a sinistral strike–slip ductile shear zone, and has a 1-km wide north-south trending region where quartz mean grain size of approximately 35 μm does not vary significantly. Two types of quartz microstructures, A and B, occur in the western and eastern part of the shear zone, respectively. The lattice preferred orientation (LPO) patterns are characterized by a type I crossed girdle in the samples with the quartz microstructure A, and a Y maximum in the samples with the quartz microstructure B. The microstructures under optical and transmission electron microscopes indicates that the quartz recrystallization occurred predominantly by progressive subgrain rotation in microstructure A, and by both progressive subgrain rotation and grain boundary migration in microstructure B. This suggests different deformation conditions in the western and eastern parts of the shear zone. Quartz LPO patterns, presence of myrmekite, feldspar compositions, and dislocation density also suggest difference in the deformation conditions. The syn-deformation temperature in the western part of the shear zone was lower than that of the eastern part of the shear zone. The stress in the western part of the shear zone was higher than that of the eastern part of the shear zone. The difference in the deformation conditions would affect not only the quartz microstructure, but also the quartz LPO patterns and the presence of myrmekite around K-feldspar porphyroclasts.

    Notes: Long-term phytoplankton responses in Lake Geneva to a decline in phosphorus (P) loading are examined in terms of summer (July–September) biomass and community structure. With the rapid development of human activity on its banks and within its catchment area in the 1960s, this large subalpine hydrosystem shifted from oligotrophy to eutrophy within approximately one decade. Measures to reduce P loading were initiated successfully in the mid-1970s, when total P concentrations in the winter overturn altered from 90 μg/L in 1980 to 40 μg/L in 1998. Until the 1990s, algal descriptors improved as expected (biomass decline, reappearance of diatom species, increased contribution of nanoplankton). Then, paradoxically, and in contrast to the reappearance of oligotrophic species, summer algal biomass began to increase. Pre-summer (period prior to the beginning of the clear water phase) dissolved inorganic phosphorus concentrations and summer phytoplankton composition presented similar interannual trends. However, the succession of phytoplankton structure during the reoligotrophication phase differed greatly from that during the eutrophication period, and a recent abnormal upward trend in algal densities is mainly the result of the development of large species that formerly were only common from late September until November. This community change, mainly triggered by filamentous (Mougeotia gracillima, Tribonema) or motile forms (Dinobryon sociale, Cryptophycea), seems to have been induced by the earlier and greater deepening of the P-depleted layer. In addition to milder summers, this massive development of larger forms seems to be favoured by four of their biological features: tolerance to warm temperatures, tolerance to low-light intensity (might exploit deeper layers where P is not yet limiting), shapes not only providing a large surface to volume ratio or motility (adaptation to low-nutrient concentrations), but increasing resistance to zooplankton grazing. This paradoxical trend, perhaps reinforced by the decline on roach Rutilus rutilus abundance (an opportunistic planktivore), is likely to remain until the P-depleted zone is extended below the layers that can be frequently resupplied in nutrients by hydrodynamic processes.

    Notes: The biodiversity characteristics in eight small (0.065–0.249 km2) public man-made reservoirs in the central part of the Eastern Rift Valley, Kenya, were studied between 1995 and 1998. A total of 71 phytoplankton species belonging to approximately 50 taxa were identified. Chlorophytes and cyanobacteria dominated the crop. The dominant taxa included Botryococcus, Syunura, Microsystis, Anabaena, and Cosmarium. A total of over 40 zooplankton species were identified. The community was composed mainly of crustacea, rotifers and protozoa. The most dominant group was Keratella but Brachionus and Nauplius were equally abundant. The diversity and abundance of benthic invertebrates was not high, and only 18 species were identified throughout the study period with the range of species number being 1–7 per reservoir. The benthic fauna was mainly composed of Lumbriculidae and Chironomid worms. A total of six monthly bird counts found an average of 60 birds per reservoir, and a total of 49 species was identified. Ducks, geese and coots dominated the waterfowl, especially during the dry season. Large-scale breeding by Black-headed Heron (Ardea melanocephala) and Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) was observed in one of the sites, and other species were also breeding in the reservoirs. The population of waterbirds in reservoirs was closely related to the biomass of benthic invertebrates, and the findings of the study indicate that the structure and dynamics of life forms within small man-made reservoirs can serve as excellent sensors and indicators of the state of watershed health.

    Notes: Habitat use by feral cats and dingoes was examined within a heterogeneous semi-arid woodland site in central Australia over 2 years. Density estimates of feral cats based on tracks were higher in mulga habitat than in open habitat. Isodar analysis implied that this pattern of habitat use by feral cats was consistent with the consumer-resource model of density-dependent habitat selection, which is an ideal free solution. The reason why mulga supported higher densities of feral cats was unclear. Foraging success of feral cats may be higher in the mulga because the stalk and ambush hunting tactics typically employed by felids are well suited to dense cover. Mulga may also have offered feral cats more protection from dingo predation. Dingo activity was distributed uniformly across habitats. The dingo isodar was statistically non-significant, suggesting that habitat selection by dingoes was independent of density.

    Notes: The value of reptiles as bioindicators of the initial effects of heavy cattle grazing in a South Australian chenopod shrubland was assessed in an experimental trial. Reptiles were sampled in three different subhabitats within two replicate treatment paddocks and a control region. A total of 30 sites was sampled in two sessions before grazing and four sessions after the commencement of intensive pulses of grazing. Capture rates of most common reptile species, fecundity of abundant gecko species and reptile species composition within different subhabitats were largely resilient to the initial effects of overgrazing. However, agamids in general, and particularly Ctenophorus nuchalis, increased at grazed sites relative to controls following grazing. Most changes observed in the reptile assemblages were predictable based upon species response to alteration in vegetation cover. Because vegetation cover can be rapidly and efficiently monitored, the use of reptiles as early warning indicators of unsustainable pastoralism in the study region was not supported.

    Notes: The only known population of the endangered shrub Epacris stuartii Stapf was studied from 1994 to 2001 using demographic census techniques. The effects of substrate, a fire and a storm on the emergence and survival of seedlings and the survival of established plants of different sizes were examined using failure-time analyses and logit-linear models. Ninety-five per cent of seedling emergence was delayed until the second post-fire spring, an unusual response among species with persistent soil seed banks. Mortality of seedlings was extreme compared with larger-seeded species, but diminished significantly with age. Seedling mortality varied significantly between substrates: 40% of seedlings persisted for more than 5 years in mineral soil, whereas less than 10% lived more than a year on rock and intermediate substrates. However, seedling numbers and local densities were lower on soils than other substrates. Background mortality of established plants was lower on soil and intermediate substrates (0.5% per year) than on rock (3% per year). Small plants may be more susceptible than large plants on rock, but not on soil. Both the fire and the storm resulted in elevated mortality of established plants. The population exhibited a variable response to fire, with plants on rock and intermediate substrates behaving as obligate seeders, whereas plants in soil resprouted. This appears to be the first report of microhabitat variation in fire response at sympatric scales. The effects of the storm were apparently independent of substrate and plant size. The essentially independent disturbance regimes comprising recurring fires and storms are likely to have a profound effect on the long-term population dynamics of E. stuartii. Over the 7-year census period, recruitment has failed to compensate for mortality, resulting in a 30% net decline in the population. The demographic census has proved to be crucial in the detection and diagnosis of this decline.

    Notes: The late Quaternary vegetation communities of the south-central highlands of Victoria are constructed from analyses of pollen and charcoal, and macroscopic plant remains preserved in Sphagnum bogs. The sites, located in eucalypt forest or woodland, form an altitudinal sequence with the component Eucalyptus species varying with altitude and with small pockets of Nothofagus cunninghamii (Hook.) Oerst. in close proximity to the higher sites. The record from the sites above 900 m covers the last 32 000 years, and the record from the lower sites extends from at least 12 000 BP. Around 32 000 BP the region was predominantly covered by a mosaic of alpine feldmark and herbfield, with small patches of Eucalyptus and Nothofagus woodland close to sea level when summer temperatures were probably 5°C lower than present. Lowest values, probably 7°–8°C below present, occurred between 19 800 and 16 900 BP, when alpine communities were most widespread and much of the Central Highlands was treeless. Around 12 000 BP alpine taxa disappeared or were greatly reduced, first at the lower sites. There was an associated rise in the treeline with the movement upslope of Nothofagus and eucalypt forest as a result of a general increase in temperature and probably effective precipitation. By 6000 BP wet eucalypt forest and Nothofagus reached their maximum postglacial extent at all sites, possibly related to a further increase in temperature, at least 2°C lower than present, and higher effective precipitation. A continuing increase in temperature, or an increase in continentality, and a decrease in effective precipitation led to increased fire hazard and retraction of rainforest and wet sclerophyll or tall open forest toward present-day values. Nothofagus disappeared from the sites below 900 m. The activities of humans pose further threats to remaining forest communities. The record of vegetation and environmental change derived from the local and regional picture from eight sites reinforces and complements that from the individual sites. For example, combining the records overcomes to some extent taphonomic problems such as the effect of streams that flow close to all sites, and other limitations including problems of dating, poor preservation and variable sedimentation rates.

    Notes: The history of isolated patches of monsoon rainforest within large tracts of Eucalyptus savanna is poorly understood because of the scarcity of reliable palaeoecological records in the Australian monsoon tropics. Elsewhere in the world, the ratio of the stable isotopes 13C to 12C (δ13C) in soil organic matter has shed light on the dynamics of rainforest–savanna boundaries because tropical grasses with the C4 photosynthetic pathway have a distinct δ13C signature (–17 to –9‰) compared with that of woody plants with the C3 photosynthetic pathway (–32 to –22‰). In order to determine the magnitude of the variation in δ13C, unreplicated soil profiles were sampled beneath different vegetation types on three boundaries between Eucalyptus savanna and rainforest that were both growing on Tertiary age laterite parent material. Replicated (n = 3) soil profiles, which were also derived from Tertiary age laterite, were sampled from beneath: (i) dense stands of African grasses within a frequently burnt Eucalyptus savanna; and within the same long unburnt Eucalyptus savanna, (ii) patches of African and natives grasses and (iii) clumps of Acacia trees. The strongly negative δ13C values of soil organic matter derived from the frequently burnt and long unburnt grassy understoreys in the Eucalyptus savannas showed that a considerable amount of the soil carbon was derived from C3 (woody) species despite the presence of a ground layer dominated by C4 grasses. However, a feature of these data was the considerable variability among the three ‘replicate’ profiles. The surface soil samples from beneath three clumps of Acacia trees in the unburnt Eucalyptus savanna had much less variable δ13C values and were similar to two of the three monsoon rainforests sampled. The pattern of δ13C values from unreplicated soil profiles from different vegetation types across three rainforest boundaries was also very variable and not always obviously related the known disturbance history of the extant vegetation. Given the considerable variability within and between vegetation types with contrasting disturbance histories, it is concluded that the use of carbon stable isotopes to advance understanding of the dynamics of rainforest and Eucalyptus savanna boundaries will require further development, such as determination of the 14C age and δ13C values of different soil carbon fractions.

    Notes: This study investigated the habitat preferences of Ningaui yvonneae, a small, nocturnal insectivorous marsupial of the semi-arid regions of southern Australia. Habitat composition was assessed at both the local (trapping grid) and trap scale. Multiple linear regression revealed a significant positive relationship between captures of N. yvonneae and the abundance of hummock grass (Triodia irritans) at the local scale. At the trap scale, the interaction between Triodia irritans and shrubs was found to be significant. This is thought to reflect the importance of the availability of cover to ningauis. Triodia was an essential component of that, probably because it affords greater protection from predators. This study provides quantitative habitat data that supports the contention of other studies that N. yvonneae has a strong positive association with Triodia spp.

    Notes: Funil Reservoir receives inflow from a highly industrialized region and acts as a natural sink to pollutants. Among the consequences of the uncontrolled nutrient loading is the constant presence and periodic heavy blooms of Microcystis aeruginosa. This study verified limnological features and zooplankton assemblage of the Funil Reservoir focusing on the environmental-indicator properties of rotifers and cladocerans. The summer bloom of M. aeruginosa caused reductions in water transparency, nitrate and orthophosphate concentrations and raises in chlorophyll a, pH, dissolved oxygen and chemical oxygen demand values. All zooplankton species presented spatial and temporal variations with the exception of the copepods, which were present in all samples. According to canonical correspondence analysis, ammonium was the variable most related to zooplankton variability and different Rotifera and Cladocera assemblages indicated distinct environment conditions. Rotifer taxa associated with increases of water temperature and chlorophyll a concentration were found with high densities during M. aeruginosa blooms. Species of rotifer and cladocerans are suggested as indicators that can be used to identify different physical and chemical gradients or eutrophic increases in Funil Reservoir.

    Notes: Sixty-seven strains of seven species of Azolla were screened for tolerance to ammonium ion on the basis of their growth on the medium with or without 20 mmol/L ammonium. Azolla nilotica was the most sensitive species followed by Azolla rubra. Azolla pinnata var. pinnata was the most tolerant species. Twelve tolerant strains in Azolla mexicana, Azolla caroliniana, Azolla microphylla and A. pinnata var. pinnata were selected. No tolerant strain was found in Azolla filiculoides containing native strains in Japan.

    Notes: The external loading of 14 lakes in the Wielkopolska National Park was calculated, including nitrogen and phosphorus loads from point, diffuse and dispersed sources, precipitation and recreation. The basic source of nitrogen and phosphorus for most lakes in the Park is the export of diffuse pollution from the catchment area. Only four lakes are contaminated by sewage, which accounts for 0.1–61.2% of total nutrient loading. Annual unit area loads of phosphorus and nitrogen estimated for each lake were 2–51 times higher than Vollenweider’s critical loading levels. Estimated mass loading and annual unit area loads of nutrients for each lake were compared with lake water quality, expressed as the trophic state index. Analysis of the physico-geographical structure of the catchment area and natural resistance of lakes to external input of nutrients allowed us to assess the role of the catchment in the deterioration of water quality and to indicate the protective measures required.

    Notes: In the past, small irrigation reservoirs were constructed only for rice paddy irrigation in Japan. Many of the watersheds for these irrigation reservoirs were forests. These watersheds have been gradually developed into farmland or housing areas. After World War II, the use of chemical fertilizers, such as ammonium sulphate, became popular in upland fields in Japan. As a result, there are high concentrations of nitrates in groundwater and spring water under upland fields. Hence, irrigation reservoirs that collect water from these watersheds have been polluted by nitrates. High nitrates concentrations in irrigation reservoirs have been found where the watershed is located close to tea yards. However, there has been minimal research into these reservoirs in the fields of limnology and agricultural engineering. We have therefore tried to verify the water-quality characteristics in irrigation reservoirs from the point of view of water-quality conservation. In the process of the investigation, we encountered a quite significant reservoir called the Tanno Reservoir that has not seen any forms of life. We examined the causes of this lack of life, as well as measures that could be taken for the remediation of such a reservoir. This paper discusses and clarifies the results of these studies.

    Notes: This paper presents the phytoplankton succession during two successive years in Lake Bourget, a deep subalpine lake recovering from eutrophication. A drastic reduction of the watershed phosphorus loading in 1980 stopped lake eutrophication. At present, the lake has nearly reached constant winter (January–February) nutrient concentrations. However, during the 2 years of the study, the phytoplankton data set shows a great interannual variability, which is analysed on the basis of the meteorological forcing variables.

    Notes: With the objective of augmenting fish production in Mount Storm Lake, Virginia Electric and Power Company initiated a programme of phosphorus addition to increase primary production, and ultimately, channel catfish (Ictaturus punctatus) growth in the 486 ha cooling reservoir. We simulated channel catfish growth dynamics using two bioenergetics modelling scenarios: (i) effects of average reservoir temperature on growth, conversion efficiency and consumption; and (ii) effects of reservoir enrichment on growth, which is simulated by increasing feeding rates. During 1991–1993, fish were sampled monthly, but sampling was increased to every 2 weeks during the peak growing season (June–September). Most of the channel catfish collected were aged 0 year and aged 1 year with rapid annual growth rates ranging from 9.0 to 13.7 J/g. We found many age 1 250–300 mm catfish, but few beyond this size. Conversion efficiency (joules gained/joules consumed) was low at approximately 18–19%. High algae consumption (40%) was evident, but consumption of zooplankton and Asiatic clam (Corbicula sp.) increased over the study. Simulated increased feeding rates showed that channel catfish were food limited in summer and fall (July–December). Weight gains with 5 and 10% feeding increases were 6–13% and 18–38%, respectively, from the baseline. Catfish of all sizes should benefit from phosphorus additions.

    Notes: Refilling of the formerly oligo-mesotrophic, softwater Brucher Reservoir commenced in April 1993 and took 11 months to completely fill. A severe ‘trophic upsurge’ in the sense of nutrient enrichment (phosphorus, dissolved organic material) as a result of the decomposition of the inundated vegetation occurred. However, algal crop and phosphorus utilization efficiency, expressed as chlorophyll concentrations per unit of total phosphorus, remained very low. In the absence of any fish stock, a single species, Daphnia galeata, monopolized the resources. Sustained by the detritus food chain, daphnids exerted a severe‚‘top-down’ control upon phytoplankton, thereby preventing any net algal growth. In 1994, artificial mixing prevented the occurrence of anoxic water conditions and internal nutrient enrichment of the lake. Although the decay of the inundated vegetation was still of importance, phosphorus concentrations in the water column approached equilibrium with the external input while dissolved organic material concentrations clearly declined. That year, the reservoir became stocked with minnows, sun bleak (Leucaspius delineatus) and trout. As food limitation, as a result of reduced heterotrophic production, became more severe in the face of an increasing predation pressure, the daphnid population density declined, resulting in a decreasing but still adequate community filtering rate providing pronounced ‘clear-water phases’ of up to 10 m that were features of the period 1995–1997. Although D. galeata defended its key position in the food web, its life-history traits (e.g. body size) changed. Submerged macrophytes, which since 1995 gradually colonized suitable areas of the reservoir, provided a favourable refuge for minnows from trout predation that resulted in reduced predation pressure upon pelagic daphnids. However, in 1998, ungrazeable algae became prominent, adversely affecting transparency. That year, the significant inverse relationship between chlorophyll : total phosphorus ratios and daphnids became uncoupled during the summer (July–August) by indigestible chlorococcalean algae. Nevertheless, the fishery management that was implemented was successful in sustaining not only the lowest yield of algae at the given nutrient concentration but also the most favourable species composition with respect to water quality.

    Notes: South African fynbos vegetation is threatened on a large scale by invasive woody plants. A major task facing nature conservation managers is to restore invaded areas. The aim of this study was to determine the restoration potential of fynbos following dense invasion by the Australian tree Acacia saligna. The impacts of dense invasion on seed-bank composition and depth distribution were investigated to determine which fynbos guilds and species have the most persistent seed-banks. Soil samples were excavated at three different depths for invaded and uninvaded vegetation at two sand plain and mountain fynbos sites. Seed-banks were determined using the seedling emergence approach. Invasion caused a significant reduction in seed-bank density and richness at all sites. There was a significant, but smaller, reduction in seed-bank density and richness with soil depth at three sites. Seed-bank composition and guild structure changed following invasion. Low persistence of long-lived obligate seeders in sand plain fynbos seed-banks indicates that this vegetation type will be difficult to restore from the seed-bank alone following alien clearance. The dominance of short-lived species, especially graminoids, forbs and ephemeral geophytes, suggests that regenerating vegetation will develop into a herbland rather than a shrubland. It is recommended that seed collecting and sowing form part of the restoration plan for densely invaded sand plain sites. As seed density remained higher towards the soil surface following invasion, there is no general advantage in applying a mechanical soil disturbance treatment. However, if the shallow soil seed-bank becomes depleted, for example following a hot fire through dense alien slash, a soil disturbance treatment should be given to exhume the deeper viable seed-bank and promote recruitment.

    Notes: Dillwynia tenuifolia Sieber ex DC. is a vulnerable species endemic to the Sydney region in Australia. This investigation focused on the breeding system and genetic structuring of the species in locations encompassing its entire geographical range. A field pollination experiment showed that D. tenuifolia produced fruit from both self- and cross-pollination events, and thus has a facultative breeding system. Fruiting success from self- pollination was approximately half that observed from cross-pollination. The genetic structure of D. tenuifolia populations was investigated by using allozyme electrophoresis. A survey of 16 loci revealed a high level of genetic variation with approximately two-thirds of the loci being polymorphic and a mean of 1.84 alleles per loci. The genotype frequencies deviated from the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium, with the observed level of heterozygosity significantly less than expected. The inbreeding coefficient was 0.31. There was very little divergence between populations (FST = 0.04) but the fixation indices were high within populations. Spatial autocorrelation, using Moran’s I, showed that neighbouring plants were closely related (I 〉 0.4). The genetic neighbourhood and effective population size in the species were estimated at one location as 1.1 ha and 104 plants, respectively.

    Notes: Geographic ranges and host plants of 10 species of Australian coreid, Gelonus tasmanicus, Acantholybas brunneus, Amorbus alternatus, Am. atomarius, Am. biguttatus, Am. bispinus, Am. obscuricornis, Am. rhombifer, Am. robustus and Am. rubiginosus, were summarized using data from specimen collection labels and sampling. One process (CLIMEX) and two correlative range-modelling programs (BIOCLIM and DOMAIN) were used to infer the bioclimatic profiles of each species. By inference from the maximum range predictions made by CLIMEX, the suggestion that G. tasmanicus, Am. atomarius and Am. obscuricornis are temperate species was supported. Similarly, the suggestions that Ac. brunneus was a subtropical species and Am. biguttatus and Am. rhombifer are predominantly tropical species were supported. That Am. alternatus, Am. robustus and Am. rubiginosus are apparently ubiquitous species was supported. Comparison of the bioclimatic profiles of the habitats of G. tasmanicus and Am. obscuricornis within Tasmania using BIOCLIM supported information available in the published literature, that is, that G. tasmanicus is better suited to sites at higher elevations than Am. obscuricornis. In addition, the suggestion that the regions of high Amorbus species endemism should overlap with regions of high eucalypt species endemism was also supported. This finding is taken as evidence that the evolutionary radiation of Amorbus has followed that of the eucalypts. Using these models we have obtained preliminary insights into the biology of each species and the environmental characteristics of their preferred climatic envelope. This is an achievement that might never have been attained through concentrated study given that these insects can vary from being rare to, at best, locally common in occurrence.

    Notes: Cross-ribbed rolling is a technique routinely used to construct firebreaks along the margins and access tracks of Ngarkat Conservation Park, South Australia. These breaks, approximately 20 m wide, contain regenerating heath communities with an overstorey of mallee. The effects of cross-ribbed rolling on community composition and succession were examined in a single fire patch on the western boundary of Ngarkat Conservation Park across 12 sites located in vegetation burnt approximately 35 years ago. Two areas at each site were investigated, one on rolled communities and the other running parallel on the adjacent unrolled vegetation. There was also a difference in the rolled communities sampled; six were on a 3-year-old break, whereas the remainder were on a 5-year-old break. Results indicate no changes to species richness or diversity when comparing rolled and unrolled areas, but there was some alteration to species composition in rolled communities. These results suggest that under current rolling regimes, the main effect is a reduction in biomass and some accompanying alteration to species composition, but not a reduction in overall species diversity or an increase in weeds.

    Notes: In the Fiji Islands, female yellow-lipped sea kraits (Laticauda colubrina) grow much larger than males, and have longer and wider heads than do conspecific males of the same body length. This morphological divergence is accompanied by (and may be adaptive to) a marked sex divergence in dietary habits. Adult female sea kraits feed primarily on large conger eels, and take only a single prey item per foraging bout. In contrast, adult males feed upon smaller moray eels, and frequently take multiple prey items. Prey size increases with snake body size in both males and females, but the sexes follow different trajectories in this respect. Female sea kraits consume larger eels relative to predator head size and body length than do males. Thus, the larger relative head size of female sea kraits is interpreted as an adaptation to consuming larger prey items. Our results are similar to those of previous studies on American water snakes (natricines) and Australian file snakes (acrochordids), indicating that similar patterns of sex divergence in dietary habits and feeding structures have evolved convergently in at least three separate lineages of aquatic snakes.

    Notes: Many lakes and other standing water-bodies in arid and semiarid Australia are extremely turbid, although the nature of this turbidity and its seasonal and interannual variation are not widely known. The water quality of the Longreach Waterhole was investigated over the dry season (April–November). Turbidity exceeded 100 Nephelometric Turbidity Units, comprising mainly colloidal clay and silica minerals. The high total solids’ concentrations of the Waterhole (maximum 1150 mg/L) resulted in euphotic depths as low as 19 cm. Evaporative concentration, inferred from increased conductivity and observed reductions in water level, increased the concentration of total solids, phosphorus, nitrogen and reduced euphotic depth. Elevated nutrient concentrations, however, were not accompanied by increased phytoplankton biomass, measured as chlorophyll a. The water-body was well oxygenated, although concentrations tended to decline towards the end of the dry season. The influence of evaporative concentration on water quality and the need to relate water quality monitoring and investigations to the hydrologic history of the Longreach Waterhole, and other arid water-bodies, is emphasized.

    Notes: The Institute of Inland Waters in Greece has investigated the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of major Greek lakes, with regard to water use, quality and trophic status. Based on this and other limnological investigations, Greek lakes can be divided into three categories: warm monomictic deep lakes, warm monomictic shallow lakes, and dimictic shallow lakes. The water quality of some Greek lakes demonstrates the presence of high concentrations of nutrients and heavy metals, with reduced concentrations of diluted oxygen. High concentrations of ammonia, nitrate and phosphate are found in many lakes, while anaerobic hypolimnia are usually found in shallow lakes. Phosphorus is the main nutrient responsible for eutrophication because it is the limiting factor in most of the lakes that were investigated.

    Notes: Enterprise Pit Lake is a water-filled mining void located in Australia’s wet/dry tropics south of Darwin in the Northern Territory (13°49.6′S, 131°49.8′E). In the mid-1990s, the void was rapidly filled by the artificial diversion of the nearby Pine Creek watercourse. Profile data and surface water quality data were collected in the lake on a monthly basis from November 1998 to October 1999. Analysis of this data showed that Enterprise Pit Lake was strongly stratified for most of the year with deep mixing occurring once during the middle of the cool, dry season (August, 1999). The relatively small volume of its epilimnion and its low productivity allowed significant oxygen concentrations to remain in the hypolimnion of the lake when it was strongly stratified. Low pH values in a layer of water with a depth of approximately 35 m and located in the lake’s hypolimnion might be associated with several factors, including enhanced sulphide oxidation on the walls of the pit in this region.

    Notes: A major problem encountered by managers of large reservoirs, such as Lake Nasser (located in the south of Egypt), is the continuous deposition of sediments, resulting in a bed-level increase, a decrease in lake capacity, and the creation of a new delta that might eventually hinder navigation. To investigate the sedimentation problem in Lake Nasser, a series of surveyed cross-sections were reviewed and samples of suspended sediment and bed material collected. These sets of data were analysed to investigate the progress of the delta formation, the change in its properties in all directions and the corresponding patterns of suspended and deposited sediment particles. Results showed that deposited sediments, characterized by a variable pattern of particle composition, are building up at the lake entrance. Although the expansion of the delta is multidirectional, its accelerated advance towards the High Aswan Dam would depend on the frequent occurrence of high floods following extended drought periods. Based on the calculated deposited sediment volume in Lake Nasser during the period 1964–1998, the lifetime of the dead storage zone allocated for sediment deposition (31 × 109 m3) is estimated at a minimum of 310 years.

    Notes: Hepatotoxic microcystins produced by cyanobacteria represent a significant health hazard. In Morocco, although blooms of cyanobacteria are known to occur frequently in some water-bodies, studies on toxicology and toxinology of these potentially harmful algae have been scarcely developed. This paper presents results of the detection of Microcystin-LR (Mcyst-LR) and other microcystin variants and their content variations from Microcystis natural blooms and from the isolated strain culture. During the cyanobacteria dynamic study, 11 bloom samples were collected between 1994 and 2000 and were assessed for toxicity and quantification of microcystins, respectively, by mice bioassay and the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The bloom samples exhibit a high toxicity with mice intraperitoneal injection (i.p.) LD50 〈 100 mg/kg and the total microcystin contents were 496–8800 μg/g dry weight with a coefficient of variation of less than 11%. However, the Microcystis isolated strain cultured on Z8 medium under controlled laboratory conditions produced an amount of 707 μg/g dry weight, its toxicity level corresponds to a LD50 i.p mice of 31 mg/kg. The detection of microcystin variants and the identification of Mcyst-LR from some natural bloom samples collected in 1994, 1996 and 1999 have been carried out by high performance liquid chromatography with a photodiode array detector, which confirmed the identification from each bloom sample of at least four microcystin variants, among which the Mcyst-LR one represents a relative proportion of 30% to 62% of total microcystin contents. Only one variant of microcystin that was not a Mcyst-LR has been detected from a Microcystis isolated strain. The toxicity level of the material depended either on the amount of microcystins or the number of these variants and their proportion. According to these results, the survey of cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins monitoring in water used for human consumption is needed to avoid any sanitary risk.

    Description: On 30 September 1996, seismological evidence indicated that a volcanic eruption was starting north of the Grímsvötn caldera in the glacier Vatnajökull, Iceland. As the eruption developed during the first half of October, meltwater was collected in the subglacial lake2 Grímsvötn at a tremendous rate. It was obvious that a catastrophic jökulhlaup could be expected on the outwash plain Skeiðarársandur south of the glacier Skeiðarárjökull, endangering travellers, as well as bridges and roads in the area. This paper describes the events, hydrograph and suspended sediment transport for the catastrophic flood on Skeiðarársandur, following the subglacial eruption.

    Description: Active fluid and gas transport were measured and observed along more than 200 km of the convergent margin of Costa Rica during cruise SO144-2 aboard RV Sonne. Ten profiles were run with the TV-sled OFOS, eight of which detected the dense occurrence of cold vent sites. This discovery shows that seafloor fluid expulsion is widely spread along the Pacific margin of Costa Rica. Surficial evidence of fluid expulsion is indicated by the appearance of chemosynthetic vent organisms such as bacterial mats, vesicomyid, solemyid and mytilid bivalves and tubeworms. Numerous active vents were indicated by elevated methane concentrations (≤ 200 nmol L–) in the bottom water. Although fluid-venting activity was known previously from a small area south of Nicoya Peninsula, the present study documents active seepage at landslides, headwall scarps related to seamount subduction, morphological intersections of faults and mid-slope mud volcanoes.

    Description: We provide new geological and isotope geochemical constraints on the evolution from continental rifting to sea-floor spreading along a segment of the Jurassic Tethyan margin exposed in the Platta and Err nappes (eastern Central Alps). Field observations show that the ocean–continent transition zone is characterized by oceanward-dipping detachment faults leading to the exhumation of subcontinental mantle rocks subsequently intruded by gabbro bodies and dolerite dikes, and covered by pillow basalts and radiolarites. Zircons extracted from gabbros and albitite yield concordant U–Pb ages of 161 ± 1 Ma; their initial ɛHf (+ 14.4 to + 14.9) as well as bulk rock ɛNd values of from gabbros and basalts (+ 7.3 to + 9.5) point to a MORB-type depleted mantle source. These data suggest that the onset of magmatic activity coincides with the latest phase of mantle exhumation along low-angle detachment faults and may be controlled by upwelling asthenosphere beneath a zone of exhumed continental mantle.

    Notes: Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa (68 800 km2) and is the eighth largest lake in the world by volume. The three East African countries of Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya share Lake Victoria and its resources. The total annual catch of fish from the lake ranges between 400 × 106 kg and 500 × 106 kg, bringing these riparian countries a combined annual income of approximately US$250 000–500 000 from exports alone. Approximately 30 million people live in the riparian region and the catchment, with about 2 million of these depending directly or indirectly on fishing activities. Tragically, Lake Victoria’s extremely diverse fauna was decimated in only 30 years following the introduction of non-native Nile perch in the early 1960s. An estimated 200 endemic cichlid species became extinct. Dramatic increases in overfishing, pollution from various sources, effects of noxious water weeds and other associated problems threaten the sustainability of the lake’s resources and the economies of the riparian governments and peoples. Regulations governing Lake Victoria’s resources are different in each country. The laws concerning treatment of effluents from point sources in the three countries are not harmonized, neither are implementation or enforcement provisions. The governments of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania have begun to put in place regional mechanisms to address the lake’s many problems including the creation of a permanent regional international institution through the establishment of the Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization (LVFO). A strategic vision document and action plans have been developed. Efforts are being made at local, national and regional levels to control the water hyacinth, including manual pulling, mechanical harvesting and introduction of weevils that weaken hyacinth root systems. To address the problem of overfishing, fishermen committees at landing beaches have been put in place. Each country has committed to take all necessary measures including legislation to implement the decisions of the LVFO governing bodies. All three countries have agreed to adopt and enforce legislation and regulations prohibiting the introduction of non-indigenous species to the lake and to enforce existing regulations regarding fisheries. A Global Environment Facility project which provides funding to the Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization addresses land use management, catchment forestation, fisheries research and management, water hyacinth control, industrial effluent treatment and municipal waste treatment.

    Notes: To investigate the connection between demographic strategies and reproductive strategies of a polycarpic perennial herb, Trillium apetalon Makino, we conducted three studies. First, we monitored the fate of individuals and the flowering behavior of T. apetalon for 12 years and used a transition matrix model to analyze the demography of the population. The analysis revealed that it takes a long time for individuals to go through one-leaf stage in juveniles. Elasticity analysis showed that the survival of flowering individuals was a decisive factor in the dynamics of the population. Furthermore, we found that the average remaining lifetime of flowering individuals was high relative to the other three stages. Second, to elucidate the demographic consequences of organ preformation, we investigated the development of flower buds for future years. We observed three to six flower buds per rhizome, suggesting that flower buds for the next 3–6 years were ready in advance in this plant. Third, the results of breeding experiments clarified that although this species appears to have a substantial capacity for both inbreeding and outbreeding, inbreeding plays an important role in seed production, and that crossing experiments (direct cross-pollination and self pollination) yielded similar seed-ovule ratios to those obtained from open-pollinated individuals. Our three studies suggest that the adult survival and continuous flowering strategies of T. apetalon obtained from demographic analysis are closely interlinked with breeding systems and preformation of flower buds.

    Notes: The present paper documents patterns of species richness and abundance in Lepidoptera associated with a Eucalyptus grandis plantation, and how these patterns relate to plant age. The large number of species collected (1385), the lack of dominant species and the absence of pest outbreaks during the survey may be related to the high level of plant diversity of the native forest reserves in the area. There was no clear pattern of seasonal variation in species richness, but there were seasonal fluctuations in abundance, with minor defoliator species prevailing in October at the start of the rainy season. Species richness and abundance of Lepidoptera were positively correlated, with both variables decreasing in older plantations. However, the greatest numbers of major outbreak species and minor eucalypt defoliators were observed in plants after the mid-point (6 years old) of their cutting cycle (7–10 years). This may be because of a larger amount of better-quality plant leaves after this mid-point or the reduction in silvicultural management interventions at this period of the Eucalyptus cutting cycle. The abundance of the main outbreak species observed in the survey, Stenalcidia grosica Schaus (Geometridae), was negatively correlated with plant age. Nonetheless, the effect was weak (r = – 0.21, P = 0.03) and we were not able to find further significant correlations between plant age and abundance of the other most frequent and constant species that were collected.

    Notes: An analysis using an artificial neural network model suggests that the tropical forests of north Queensland are highly sensitive to climate change within the range that is likely to occur in the next 50–100 years. The distribution and extent of environments suitable for 15 structural forest types were estimated, using the model, in 10 climate scenarios that include warming up to 1°C and altered precipitation from –10% to +20%. Large changes in the distribution of forest environments are predicted with even minor climate change. Increased precipitation favours some rainforest types, whereas decreased rainfall increases the area suitable for forests dominated by sclerophyllous genera such as Eucalyptus and Allocasuarina. Rainforest environments respond differentially to increased temperature. The area of lowland mesophyll vine forest environments increases with warming, whereas upland complex notophyll vine forest environments respond either positively or negatively to temperature, depending on precipitation. Highland rainforest environments (simple notophyll and simple microphyll vine fern forests and thickets), the habitat for many of the region’s endemic vertebrates, decrease by 50% with only a 1°C warming. Estimates of the stress to present forests resulting from spatial shifts of forest environments (assuming no change in the present forest distributions) indicate that several forest types would be highly stressed by a 1°C warming and most are sensitive to any change in rainfall. Most forests will experience climates in the near future that are more appropriate to some other structural forest type. Thus, the propensity for ecological change in the region is high and, in the long term, significant shifts in the extent and spatial distribution of forests are likely. A detailed spatial analysis of the sensitivity to climate change indicates that the strongest effects of climate change will be experienced at boundaries between forest classes and in ecotonal communities between rainforest and open woodland.

    Notes: The floral visitors of silky oak, Grevillea robusta A. Cunn. ex R.Br., their foraging behaviour and their effects on fruit-set were studied at Malava, western Kenya. Grevillea robusta is a popular tree for farm plantings in the eastern and central African highlands. Yield of seed has been disappointingly low in some areas and a lack of appropriate pollinators has been suggested as a possible cause. Investigations involved the monitoring of visitors on active inflorescences, assessment of the rewards available to potential pollinators, and exclusion experiments to establish the effects of various visitors on fruit-set. The flowers are visited mainly by birds and insects. The likely pollinators of G. robusta are sunbirds (Nectarinia amethystina, N. cyanolaema, N. olivacea, N. superba and N. venusta) and white-eyes (Zosterops kikuyuensis and Z. senegalensis). Very little aggressive behaviour between birds was recorded. No nocturnal pollinators were observed. Nectar was the major floral reward for pollinators, but is likely depleted by ants and honey bees, the foraging behaviour of which confirmed them to be nectar-robbers. These insects hardly ever touched stigmas during their visits. Eighty-nine per cent of bird visits were in the morning (07.00–10.00 hours) when nectar volume was highest. Inflorescences bagged to exclude birds set no fruits, and unmanipulated flowers and flowers bagged with self-pollen set no fruits, indicating a self-incompatibility mechanism. Control cross-pollinated flowers displayed greatly increased fruit-set (25.1%) compared with natural open-pollination (0.9%). All these findings confirm the importance of cross-pollen transfer to flowers and the necessity of pollinators for fruit-set. Effective seed production requires activity of pollinators for self-pollen removal and cross-pollen deposition. Seed production stands for G. robusta should be established where flowering is prolific and bird pollinators are abundant.

    Notes: Body temperatures of active lizards and their correspondence with microhabitat occupation were studied for nine species of agamid lizards in the central Australian arid zone. Thermoregulatory behaviour was also documented using several measures, such as the use of shade and perch height. The effects of thermal environment on lizard habitat occupation were hypothesized to be significant, because desert regions experience daily and seasonal extremes of temperature that are well in excess of a lizard’s preferred temperature range. All species, except Ctenophorus isolepis and Diporiphora winneckei, were found to have body temperatures that corresponded closely to ground and surface temperatures. Thermoregulatory behaviour was also found to be important throughout a lizard’s daily activity; all study species, other than Ctenophorus isolepis, were found to increase their perch height in the middle of the day. Ctenophorus isolepis was shown to be a strictly terrestrial species that uses the shade of spinifex in its thermoregulatory behaviour. Species exhibited a non-random selection of microhabitats and a preference for a particular set of thermal and structural factors. In this study, it was shown that structural factors were particularly important in microhabitat occupation. Thermal factors accounted for a smaller proportion of variance in microhabitat occupation, but still played a considerable role in the microhabitat use in central Australian agamids.

    Notes: Ant assemblages in South African fynbos invaded by Acacia saligna were compared with ant assemblages in undisturbed fynbos to determine whether ant assemblages change under exotic plants that produce ant-dispersed seeds. Overall, no differences in the species richness of ants were found between weed-infested and native sites but there were differences in both ant abundance and the composition of the ant assemblage. Ants were much less abundant in weed-infested sites. To investigate whether changes in ant assemblages in weed-infested areas could be due to a preference for native seeds over exotic seeds, seeds of a range of species were offered to ants and ants that handled seeds were identified. Thirteen species of ants handled A. saligna seeds and there was no evidence to suggest that the ant assemblage as a whole preferred native seeds to A. saligna seeds. Hypotheses that may account for this pattern are discussed.

    Notes: In temperate rainforests on Chiloé Island in southern Chile (42°S), most canopy trees bear fleshy, avian-dispersed propagules, whereas emergent tree species have dry, wind-borne propagules. In the present study, the following hypothesis was tested: regardless of species, fleshy propagules are deposited in greater numbers in canopy gaps and in forest margins and hence have a more heterogeneous seed shadow than wind-dispersed propagules. To test this hypothesis, the seed rains of these two types of propagules were compared in the following forest habitats: (i) tree-fall gaps (edges and centre); (ii) forest margins with adjacent pastures; and (iii) under closed canopy (forest interior). Seed collectors (30-cm diameter) were placed in two (15 and 100 ha) remnant forest patches (n = 60–100 seed collectors per patch) distributed in the four habitats. Seeds were retrieved monthly from each collector during two reproductive seasons (1996, 1997). In both years, the seed rain was numerically dominated by two species with dry propagules (Laureliopsis philippiana and Nothofagus nitida) and three species with fleshy fruits (Drimys winteri, Amomyrtus luma, and Amomyrtus meli). The seed shadows of the two species with dry, wind-dispersed seeds differed markedly. Seeds of L. philippiana were deposited predominantly in canopy openings, whereas N. nitida seeds fell almost entirely in the forest interior. The fleshy-fruited species, Drimys and Amomyrtus spp., had similar seed deposition patterns in the various habitats studied, but the between-year differences in seed rain were greater in Drimys winteri than in Amomyrtus spp. Although no more than 10% of fleshy-fruited propagules reached the margins of the patch, approximately 7% of these were carried there by birds. Every year, canopy gaps (pooling data from edges and centres) concentrated approximately 60% of the total seed rain of both propagule types in both forest patches. Forest margins received less than 20% of the total seed rain, which was largely dominated by fleshy-fruited species. Seed shadows were a species-specific attribute rather than a trait associated with propagule type and dispersal mode.

    Notes: Paddock-scale Acacia nilotica L. Willd. ex Del. (prickly acacia) spatial distribution, seed production and dispersal patterns were investigated in the Astrebla (Mitchell) grasslands of northern Australia as a step toward predicting future patterns of invasion. A number of hypotheses were tested based on what we know of this species in both Australia and regions where it is native, for example South Africa. It was hypothesized that most A. nilotica seeds would be produced by trees in riparian habitats with access to permanent water. In addition, we predicted that seeds would be dispersed throughout the Astrebla grassland landscape by cattle, following observations that cattle readily ingest and pass seeds and that cattle have access to all areas within paddock boundary fences. Tree density, seed production and seed dispersal by cattle were measured along a series of transects from permanent watering points to paddock boundary fences. Trees associated with permanent watering points produced more seeds per unit area and occurred at higher density than their non-riparian counterparts. The importance of riparian trees decreased in years with high rainfall and in paddocks with only small areas of riparian habitat. Cattle spread dung and seeds throughout paddocks, with peaks of deposition adjacent to permanent watering points. These results suggest that invasion patterns are likely to be uneven across the landscape and may be reactive to climate. High seedling recruitment and possible thicket formation is expected adjacent to permanent watering points and wherever cattle congregate. Patterns of recruitment in non-riparian areas are likely to be relatively sparse. The importance of post-dispersal factors in determining recruitment patterns is discussed.

    Notes: The present study, conducted near Newcastle, Australia, used a blocked analysis of variance experimental design to compare initial nutrient concentrations and decomposition rates of Avicennia marina (grey mangrove) grown on sand and rock blast furnace slag. There were no significant differences (ANOVA; P 〉 0.05) in mean initial nutrient concentrations of total C, N and P for plants grown on the sand and slag substrates. A litterbag technique was used to estimate decomposition rates. After 360 days of incubation, repeated measures analysis did not identify significant differences between the substrates for the interaction term ‘substrate × time’ or the term ‘substrate’ for percentage weight loss or for C, N and P remaining. Avicennia marina on both substrates had nutrient characteristics and decomposition rates comparable to those found in the literature. Results suggest that initial nutrient concentration and decomposition rates are not dramatically influenced by the presence of slag.

    Notes: Nutrient accessions in litterfall are described for a mixed conifer (mostly Agathis australis D.Don (Lindl.), New Zealand kauri) and angiosperm temperate forest in northern New Zealand to determine the relative contributions to nutrient cycling of the conifer and angiosperm components of the forest. Concentrations for many nutrients were significantly lower in conifer litterfall fractions than for equivalent angiosperm fractions. Angiosperm leaves had concentrations of N and P twice those found in conifer leaf fall. Despite a large contribution to litterfall from weight, conifer reproductive parts (mostly cone scales) were very low in nutrients (especially N, P and Ca). Whereas angiosperm litterfall constituted 〈 45% of total litterfall by weight, nutrient accessions from the angiosperm component accounted for 45–60% of total nutrient accessions and the conifer fraction for only 30–45%, almost the exact reverse of their contributions to litterfall by weight. Of the macronutrients, P (3 kg ha–1 year–1) showed the lowest rate of accession in litterfall while Ca (84 kg ha–1 year–1) showed the highest. Faunal detritus, although 〈 1% of total litterfall by weight, contributed 10% of total P and 4% of total N reaching the forest floor via the litterfall pathway each year. The C:N and C:P ratios in litterfall and litterstore were all well above the levels at which mineralization is likely to occur. Based on the estimated residence times, long-term immobilization was more likely for N than for P. The annual pattern of nutrient accessions differed for the two components, with angiosperm accessions highest in spring and summer, and conifer accessions highest in autumn, due largely to a peak in litterfall of reproductive parts at that time of year. It is argued that differences in litter quality, decomposition rates and spatial and temporal patterns of litterfall for angiosperm versus conifer components of the forest, in conjunction with long-term disturbance regimes, may contribute to conifer–angiosperm coexistence.

    Notes: The age-specific density of the red-lipped stromb Strombus luhuanus (Mollusca: Gastropoda) was monitored over 13 years (1981–1993) at four locations on the intertidal reef flat at Heron Island, Great Barrier Reef. Densities were highly variable, but there were persistent, location-specific differences in population density, age structure and adult body size, the latter indicating that the populations were not extensively linked by adult movement. There was relatively high recruitment at most locations in 1984, 1989 and 1993, each occurring approximately 2 years after El Niño/Southern Oscillation events, although recruit density during these years varied in both space and time. The studied strombs experienced three disturbance events: (i) experimental harvesting at two locations (1984–1985); (ii) siltation from a harbour dredging operation (1987–1988); and (iii) a severe cyclone (1992). Resilience to harvesting at a local scale (0.5–2 ha) was high: density had recovered within a year, due to immigration of adults and older juveniles. Strombus luhuanus responded much more strongly to broad-scale changes to its environment than to localized harvesting. After dredging, there was a progressive density decline coupled with low recruitment at two locations, and a later decline at a third location, followed by a recruitment-driven rebound after the cyclone. Generalized environmental effects of siltation and the cyclone were also reflected in substantial changes in algal cover. Long-term variations in environmental conditions probably cause high temporal variation over large spatial scales through effects on the survival of larvae or recruits. Localized short-term field monitoring of such species would give a misleading picture of key factors affecting population dynamics.

    Notes: The ratios of stable nitrogen isotopes expressed as δ15N values can indicate the openness of nitrogen cycles in ecosystems. Southwards through the Northern Territory, values of foliar δ15N in savanna trees increase as mean annual rainfall decreases from approximately 1800 mm to approximately 750 mm, with foliar δ15N thereafter decreasing toward arid central Australia. Recent literature argues that this pattern is caused by higher grazing intensity in semi-arid savannas, but counter views have attributed the pattern more directly to variations in aridity. In this paper, grazed and ungrazed sites in a semi-arid savanna are compared, and it is shown that grazing has a relatively small effect on the positive foliar δ15N values of grasses, but no effect on δ15N values of trees. This gives little support to the argument that variations in grazing pressure at the scale of hundreds of kilometres could result in detectable differences in the foliar δ15N values of trees. I then compare the semi-arid savannas with mesic savannas, where fires are frequent, and with mesic rainforests, which are rarely burnt. Greater foliar δ15N values in rainforest and fire-excluded mesic savannas than in frequently burnt savannas suggests that fire regimes affect foliar δ15N. The previously observed pattern in δ15N values along the rainfall gradient in the Northern Territory is consistent with trends in fire frequency and possible direct effects of fire, but further work is required to determine the relative impacts of aridity and fire. Within a particular rainfall regime, foliar δ15N values may indicate historical fire frequencies.

    Notes: Landscape fire (at the scale of square kilometres or more) is relatively rare in the alpine and subalpine environments of Australia. In early 1998, a major fire (the ‘Caledonia Fire’), burnt approximately 35 000 ha, of which approximately 3000 hectares was subalpine heathland, grassland and wetland within the Victorian Alpine National Park. This fire was one of only three landscape-scale fires that have occurred anywhere in the treeless vegetation of the Victorian Alps in the past 100 years, the others being in 1939 and 1985. Monitoring of regeneration in subalpine vegetation commenced 3 weeks postfire. Sites were established in burnt grassland at Holmes Plain (1400 m a.s.l.) and burnt grassland and heathland at Wellington Plain (1480 m a.s.l.), and in unburnt grassland at both sites. In burnt grassland and heathland, the fire consumed much of the vegetation, leaving extensive areas of bare ground. The cover of dense vegetation declined from 〉 70% prefire, to approximately 15% immediately postfire. Bare ground at the Holmes and Wellington Plains sites ranged from 70% to 85% immediately postfire. By May 2000, approximately 2.5 years postfire, dense vegetation cover in grassland had increased to approximately 20%, and bare ground had decreased to an average of approximately 30%. In unburnt grassland, dense vegetation cover was generally 〉 95%, and the amount of bare ground less than 5%. The tussock-forming snow grasses resprouted vigorously following fire, and had flowered prolifically after 1 year. In heathland, most of the shrubs were incinerated, leaving close to 100% bare soil. Since then, a number of grasses and some dominant shrubs have resprouted vigorously, with some seedling regeneration. By May 2000, in heathland, bare soil was still 〉 50% and dense vegetation 〈 20%. Such ground cover conditions during this early postfire period were well below prefire levels, and well below the levels necessary to protect alpine soils from erosion. The Caledonia Fire has provided a rare opportunity to study ecological processes associated with postfire regeneration in treeless subalpine landscapes.

    Notes: Field experiments were designed to examine tree and shrub seedling emergence in temperate grassy woodlands on the New England Tablelands. The effects of study sites, intensity of previous grazing, removal of ground cover by fire or clearing, burial of seeds and ant seed theft on seedling emergence were tested in two field experiments. Six tree and seven shrub species were used in the experiments and their cumulative emergence was compared with laboratory germination studies. All species used in field experiments had lower cumulative emergence than those in laboratory germination studies despite prolonged periods of above average rainfall before and after seeds were sown. Eucalypt species emerged faster in the field than the shrub species and generally attained higher cumulative emergence than the shrubs. Spatial effects of sites and patches within sites, and of previous grazing history did not strongly influence patterns of seedling emergence in most species. Ground and litter cover generally did not enhance or suppress the emergence of seedlings, although the removal of cover in recently grazed areas enhanced the emergence of some species. Burning enhanced the emergence of some tree and shrub species where plots had more fuel and intense fires, but this effect was not strong. Compared with other treatments, seedbed manipulations produced the strongest effects. In the absence of both invertebrate and vertebrate predators, seedling emergence was lower for surface-sown seed, compared with seed sown on scarified soil surfaces. Higher seedling emergence of buried seeds in the presence of invertebrate predators probably resulted from the combined effects of predator escape and enhanced moisture status of the germination environment. Some promotion of emergence was achieved for all species in most sown treatments probably as a result of a prolonged above average rainfall. In contrast, the natural recruitment of trees and shrubs was negligible in experimental plots, highlighting the importance of seed supply and dispersal as ultimate determinants of recruitment.

    Notes: Theoretical models of species coexistence between desert mammals have generally been based on a combination of food and microhabitat selection by granivorous rodents. Although these models are applicable in various deserts of the world, they cannot explain resource use by mammals in Neotropical deserts. The present study examines diet composition in a mammal assemblage in the Monte desert, Argentina. The results show that two main strategies are used by these mammals: medium-sized species (hystricognath rodents: Dolichotis patagonum, Lagostomus maximus, Microcavia australis and Galea musteloides; and an exotic lagomorph: Lepus europaeus) are herbivores, whereas small-sized species (a marsupial: Thylamys pusillus; and sigmodontine rodents: Graomys griseoflavus, Akodon molinae, Calomys musculinus, Eligmodontia typus) are omnivorous. Small mammals also show a tendency towards granivory (C. musculinus), insectivory (A. molinae and T. pusillus) and folivory (G. griseoflavus).

    Notes: The species saturation hypothesis in ground-dwelling ant communities was tested, the relationship between local and regional species richness was studied and the possible processes involved in this relationship were evaluated in the present paper. To describe the relationship between local and regional species richness, the ground-dwelling ant fauna of 10 forest remnants was sampled, using 10 1 m2 quadrats in each remnant. The ants were extracted from the litter by using Winkler sacs. Using regression analyses, an asymptotic pattern between local and regional species richness was detected. This saturated pattern may be related to three processes: (i) high interspecific competition; (ii) habitat species specialization; or (iii) stochastic equilibrium. It is concluded that non-interactive processes, such as stochastic equilibrium and habitat specialization may act as factors regulating species richness in this community. The predominance of locally restricted species, in all sampled remnants, seems to indicate the occurrence of a high degree of habitat specialization by the ant species. This result is evidence for the hypothesis that community saturation has been generated by non-interactive processes. Although ants are frequently described as highly interactive, it is possible that interspecific competition is not important in the structuring of ground-dwelling ant communities.

    Notes: Reproductive costs are important determinants of reproductive effort in squamate reptiles. Consequently, differences in costs of reproduction between populations of geographically or climatically widespread species are likely to result in different patterns of reproductive effort. In the present study, the effect of pregnancy on sprint speed was examined in a small viviparous skink, Niveoscincus ocellatus (Gray 1845), from two populations at the climatic extremes of its distribution. Decreased sprint speed has the potential to be an important cost of reproduction in this species, through a reduced ability to avoid predation and/or decreased foraging efficiency. Lizards inhabiting the colder site were larger than those from the warmer site and, contrary to predictions from life history theory, had a higher reproductive effort. In both populations, sprint speed was lower in pregnant lizards than in either the same individuals after birth or non-pregnant control lizards. Within each population, sprint speed was unrelated to the level of reproductive effort of the female in terms of either absolute mass of the reproductive burden or the burden relative to her post-partum body mass. However, within each population, the mass of the clutch that an individual female was carrying relative to snout–vent length was an important determinant of her sprint speed while pregnant. Thus, within each population, a relatively high reproductive burden may potentially increase costs of reproduction in this species. Despite this relationship and predictions from life history theory suggesting that annual reproductive effort will be lower in populations with a large body size and delayed maturity, it is suggested that a higher reproductive effort at the cold site is possible because they have a higher absolute sprint speed because of their larger size and a relatively higher abundance of cover at the cold site, and differences in predation pressure may alter selective pressures on reproductive investment.

    Notes: The lizard fauna of sand-mined dunes of the central coast of New South Wales, Australia has been shown to be dominated by Ctenotus robustus and Ctenotus taeniolatus (Scincidae), with relative abundance changing with time since mining. However, there is little published information on how this lizard fauna compares to that of the undisturbed open forest that previously grew on these sites. Here, existing data are added to in order to produce a longer chronosequence of times since sand-mining (4, 8, 14 and 20 years) than has been examined previously. The new data are compared to those from unmined forests. Ctenotus robustus and C. taeniolatus dominated lizard captures on mined areas, with peak abundances at 8 and 14 years, respectively. Lampropholis guichenoti (Scincidae) was at low abundance until 20 years post-mining and L. delicata was present only at 20 years post-mining. Unmined forest burned 4, 8 or 14 years ago had a significantly different lizard community from that of sand-mined areas. Ctenotus robustus and C. taeniolatus were absent from unmined forest at all post-fire periods. Lampropholis guichenoti and Lampropholis delicata were numerically dominant in forest, with increasing abundance of L. guichenoti with time since fire. Thus the composition of the lizard community on these coastal dunes is not solely determined by time since disturbance per se. Comparisons of sites on the basis of accumulated leaf litter showed a significant relationship between Lampropholis abundance and litter density. On sand-mined sites and forested sites with similar leaf litter densities, the abundances of L. guichenoti were similar. As Ctenotus were absent from unmined forest, we could not compare their distribution in unmined and mined areas. However, negative correlations of Ctenotus abundance with canopy cover and understorey vegetation density offer a possible explanation for the absence of these species from forest.

    Notes: Lake Chapala, the most important lake in Mexico, has suffered from cultural eutrophication problems for many years, manifested by the growth of aquatic vegetation and an increase in primary productivity. It was found that about 70% of the total phosphorus entering Lake Chapala is orthophosphate, thus increasing the biological availability of nutrients in the lake. In addition, the hydrologic imbalance in the lake, caused by the over-use of water resources along the Lerma–Chapala basin, has significantly increased the hydraulic residence time of the inflow waters, thus increasing the effects of the added phosphorus, and creating conditions that increase the lake’s eutrophication status.The shallow characteristics of the lake and the action of the wind forces produce rapid changes in water quality, especially in the distribution of phosphate. The focus of this paper is on the development of a historical orthophosphate balance in Lake Chapala, quantifying the main point and non-point sources that contribute to the enhancement of this nutrient in the lake. The estimation of the amount of phosphate in the lake can be used to determine appropriate management practices to reduce the phosphate loads on the lake.

    Notes: Lake Toba is the largest year-round lake in South-East Asia and the largest volcanic lake in the world. The Lake Toba catchment area faces an environmental crisis characterized by widespread deforestation, drought, decline of the water level, water quality degradation, invasive species and loss of biological diversity. More than half of the Lake Toba catchment area is classified as land at high erosion risk. Widespread poverty gives people little room to think beyond day-to-day needs and is an instrument for unsustainable methods of fishing and growing food. The Lake Toba catchment area is not managed as an integrated whole, but rather as four separate districts. Guidelines and orders tend to come from the government in Jakarta rather than being developed locally with stakeholder involvement. Differences in approach between government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have resulted in friction and mistrust between the two. Local, national and international NGOs have been the biggest contributors to increasing the awareness of the need for an integrated approach to managing the lake. Technical exchanges with Lake Champlain have facilitated an exchange of experience of managing a large lake watershed, the transfer of low-cost alternative technologies for managing waste water in small communities and development of new approaches to pulp and paper mills on both lakes. The Lake Toba Heritage Foundation’s priorities include establishing a research and monitoring programme, creating a science and education centre, and developing better coordination among central, provincial and district levels of government.

    Notes: Lake management is typically approached from a biophysical perspective. Lake managers ask how lakes can be managed to sustain their ecological functions. The social value of lakes is usually given less attention. The present paper begins the analysis at the other end of the lake and society connection by posing the question: what social needs must be met to sustain society? The primary social needs of sustainable societies are outlined and then the contribution of lakes to each need is discussed. Lakes can only provide optimal social benefits if management decisions recognize the full set of potential contributions lakes can make to society and those management decisions are integrated to provided balanced attention to all values that lakes provide. The present paper expands the domain of values beyond the traditional environmental and recreational contributions of lake management to also include aesthetics, education, economic opportunity, emotional security, cultural opportunity, individual freedom and spirituality. Citizen involvement is essential in broadening the conceptualization of the lake values and in implementing integrated management plans.

    Notes: Light is the factor that fundamentally determines the level of primary production. Primary productivity is controlled by bottom-up factors (nutrient levels), with secondary effects due to biological factors (zooplankton grazing). The light regimen experienced by algae is determined largely by mixing of the water column. The processes of photoinhibition and light attenuation combine with the resultant light–dark adaptation to shape the vertical productivity profile and it is important to determine their importance separately because they vary spatially and temporally. Daily variations in productivity can be as large as longer-term changes and events causing high productivity may not be important in whole-lake terms. At approximately 0.5 m depth, there is maximal photosynthesis causing depletion of nutrients, but there is vertical homogeneity in productivity control and horizontal similarity in productivity levels. There is zero productivity below 5 m depth due to light attenuation but, if the benthos becomes productive due to an environmental change, such as decreased turbidity, overall productivity may rise appreciably. Self-shading was investigated by incubating serial dilutions of whole lakewater with filtered water to reduce the density of algal cells. Photosynthetic efficiency was calculated as productivity per unit of chlorophyll a. Self-shading showed different responses for conditions of ‘low’ and ‘high’ productivity. With low productivity, there was a shading loss of 17%, while for high productivity this was 46%. Thus, self-shading is seen to have a considerable impact on potential productivity and may affect phytoplankton–cyanobacterial community structure with implications for lake management.

    Notes: The epifluorescence technique was used to quantify the total bacterial population in two dams (Neusa and Prado) and in a natural lagoon (Fúquene), which have different geographical locations and physicochemical characteristics. Bacterial abundance was similar in the three water-bodies (8.4 × 108 cells L–1), but the density of plateable heterotrophs was always lower (1.4 × 106 CFU L–1) when obtained by the plate count method. Results obtained during validation of the epifluorescence technique show: (i) that there are no statistically significant differences between counts of samples fixed in the field and unfixed samples; (ii) that the median count of samples fixed and observed periodically over a period of 8 months was similar; (iii) that plate counts underestimate the population; and (iv) that epifluorescence counts were similar in the three water-bodies studied, despite their different ecological conditions.

    Notes: Lake Lugano is located at the border between Italy and Switzerland and is divided into three basins by two narrowings. The geomorphologic characteristics of these basins are very different. The catchment area is characterized by calcareous rock, gneiss and porphyry; the population amounts to approximately 290 000 equivalent inhabitants. The external nutrient load derives from anthropogenic (85%), industrial (10%) and agricultural (5%) sources. The limnological studies carried out by Baldi et al. (1949) and EAWAG (1964) revealed early signs of eutrophication, with a phosphorous concentration of about 30–40 mg m–3 and an oxygen concentration of less than 4 g m–3 in the deepest hypolimnion. Subsequently Vollenweider et al. (1964) confirmed these data and was the first to point out the presence of a meromictic layer in the hypolimnion of the northern basin. From the 1960s, as a result of an increase in the population and internal migration, the lake became strongly eutrophic with the P concentration reaching 140 mg m–3 and the oxygen in the hypolimnion reduced to zero. Fifty-five per cent of the P was from metabolic sources and 45% from detergents and cleaning products. In 1976, a partial diversion of waste water from the northern to the southern basin was begun, and gradually eight waste water treatment plants came into operation using mechanical, chemical and biological treatments. In 1986, Italy and Switzerland began to eliminate the P in detergents and cleaning products. Since 1995, the main sewage treatment plants have improved their efficiency by introducing P post-precipitation, denitrification and filtration treatments. The recovery of the lake is due to be completed by the year 2005. Altogether, during the last 20 years recovery measures have reduced the external P load from about 250 to 70–80 tonnes year–1; the goal to be reached is 40 tonnes year–1. In-lake phosphorous concentrations have decreased from 140 to 50–60 mg m–3, with the target at 30 mg m–3. Dissolved oxygen concentration is satisfactory only between the depths of 0 and 50 m, falling rapidly to zero in the deepest layers. Below a depth of 90 m, high CH4, HS–, NH4+, Fe2+ and Mn2+ concentrations exist. Primary production has decreased from 420 to 310 g Cass m–2 year–1, notwithstanding an increase in the thickness of the trophogenic layer. Structure and dynamic biomass show marked changes: phytoplankton dry weight has decreased from 16 to 7 g m–2, while zooplankton dry weight has increased from 3 to 4.5 g m–2. Chlorophyll concentration has fallen from 14 to 9 mg m–3 and Secchi disk transparency has increased from 3.5 to 5.5 m. The current sources of the external load are uncollected small urban conglomerations, storm-water overflows from outfall sewers, and the residual load from sewage treatment plants, particularly those without P post-precipitation.

    Notes: The potential chemical effects of motorized recreational activities (power boating, water skiing, jet skiing) on Brown Lake, an Australian perched, acid dune lake, were investigated. The objective of this study was to identify and quantify polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compounds (PAHs) that may have accumulated in the water and/or the organic bottom sediments of the test lake as a result of the operation of powered recreational watercraft, and to evaluate any risk to aquatic biota. To achieve this, a detailed sampling and analysis programme of the lake water and sediments was implemented. Basic water quality, ionic and nutrient data gave no indication of any deterioration in the water quality of the lake, which was attributable to human usage in general or motorized recreational activities in particular. However, analysis of samples taken from the organic bottom sediments of the lake revealed the presence of 10 PAH, including benzo(a)pyrene, chrysene, fluoranthene, phenanthrene and pyrene, which are known to be indicative of fossil fuel combustion processes. Three PAH compounds were found at all survey sites: benzo(a)pyrene (in 46% of samples), fluoranthene (in 53% of samples) and pyrene (in 44% of samples). Results of the analyses were compared with values from published guidelines for residues in freshwaters and sediments, as well as with previous studies dealing with the effects of fossil fuel combustion products on lakes. The highest PAH concentrations in sediments were recorded for benzo(a)pyrene, with three values (830, 955 and 1070 μg kg–1 dryweight) exceeding the upper threshold recommended in the draft Canadian freshwater sediment quality guidelines. Benzo(a)pyrene also exceeded the lower Canadian sediment threshold in 51 (40%) samples. These results indicate a significant level of chemical contamination of Brown Lake as a consequence of four decades of motorized recreational activities and present a significant risk to aquatic biota, particularly benthic and littoral invertebrates associated with the contaminated sediments.

    Notes: Lake Abashiri is an example of a meromictic lake under the stability of upper oligohaline water and lower polyhaline water, but a brackish lake on the whole. Nevertheless, boundary depth of the hypolimnetic layer has gradually decreased with time. At the same time, this has led to an increase in salinity and eutrophication in the epilimnion and to an acceleration of deoxygenation of the hypolimnion, attributed to the upwelling of bluish water. In order to investigate succession of the aquatic biota linked to these hydrological changes, results of occasional long-term studies on the distribution of plankton and benthos were summarized, mostly from Japanese publications of lake surveys. In each result, the boundary of the polyhaline hypolimnetic layer has gradually risen from 13 to 7 m depth between 1932 and 1955, and has been determined, in recent years, to be 5.5 m. Salinity of the epilimnion was lower than 0.1‰ in 1930s, and 0.5–0.6‰ in the 1940s before 1949. Thereafter, salinity increased to 1.8–2.3‰ until recently, with levels now often over 3‰. Following these hydrological changes, the succession of planktonic fauna and flora, particularly of the dominant species, has exhibited a gradual change from freshwater to brackish or salinity tolerant species during the 72 year period from 1926 to 1997, including a period of variable species composition in 1975–1980 and a period of degradation after that. In contrast, according to available data, the benthic community has remained unchanged in terms of the composition of dominant species in all habitats during the same 72 year period. The dominance of some plankton and benthos species has been maintained over several decades, although the community structures have displayed a few phases of abundance and regression during these 72 years.

    Notes: Underwater light climate in strongly eutrophic Lake Ülemiste was studied by applying in situ measurements and model calculations. The attenuation of light in the waters of Lake Ülemiste is rather high, with a diffuse attenuation coefficient of photosynthetically active radiation, spectral region 400–700 nm (PAR) being 1.0–3.3 m–1. From the subsurface irradiance, only 3–13% reaches the depth of 1 m. However, in most cases, 1% from the irradiance just under the surface of water is available at the average depth (2.5 m) of the lake. A simple model is used for an approximate description of the temporal variation of underwater PAR at different depths. The initial data are the episodically determined values of the diffuse attenuation coefficient of PAR, Kd,PAR and the values of continuously recorded incident irradiance. Light is limiting phytoplankton growth in Lake Ülemiste only for a very short time each year: in early spring and late summer. The study should be continued to investigate the effect of artificially regulated influx and outflow of water and nutrients to toxic cyanobacteria blooms in this lake.

    Notes: The Governments of the Provinces located in Patagonia, Argentina, promote the intensive breeding of salmonids in the Andean Patagonian region. Although annual production is low (450 ton ha–1 year–1), some effects are significant. Waste produced by salmonid breeding (feed losses, faeces and excretion) increases nutrient and organic matter concentrations, which cause modifications of water quality, sediments and biota. A consequent risk is the elevation of eutrophication levels. Possible changes in water composition, sediments, algae and wild fish populations were studied. Sites affected by fish farming showed increased nutrient concentration, and phytoplankton and periphyton biomass. Chlorophyll a was similar at both sites (affected and unaffected by fish farm sites). Sediments clearly reflect fish farm waste inputs: total phosphorus and organic matter increased 12-fold and fourfold, respectively. The species present in the gill-net catches were the autochthonous Percichthys trucha, Odontesthes hatcheri, Diplomystes viedmensis, and the introduced salmonids Oncorhynchus mykiss, Salmo trutta, Salmo salar sebago and Salvelinus fontinalis. About 50% of the total catch was salmonids. A major portion of the catch per unit weight was composed of rainbow trout, followed by perch. The catch per unit weight obtained for this reservoir agrees with the range of values previously determined (Quiros 1990) for Patagonian reservoirs. Compared with previous studies by Freyre et al. (1991), a variation in catch composition exists. This consists mainly of an increase in the numbers and condition of O. mykiss and a decrease in P. trucha. Presence of fish that escaped from hatcheries, recognizable by their eroded fins, was observed; particularly in a sampling station near the fish cage systems. Variations in catches could be caused by cyclical changes in fish populations (Wooton 1991), by direct and indirect effects of intensive fish farming, or by a combination of both events, and can only be understood through long-term studies of catch variation.

    Notes: After the reduction in external phosphorus-load (P-load), in-lake measures became practicable for eutrophic Lake Jabel. The benthic release of phosphorus (P) was efficiently suppressed by a significant nitrate supply via its main tributary. The in-situ stimulation of P-release as a result of the temporary decrease in this nitrate load, and the simultaneous P-removal by deep-water siphoning and external P-elimination was primarily designed for the faster deprivation of P from lake sediment. This new strategy was aimed at exhausting the ‘P-surplus’, that is, the mobile redox-sensitive iron-bound P-portions of the uppermost sediment layers, where a re-supply from deeper layers is needed within the stratification period of 2 consecutive years of operation of the P-elimination system. By studying early benthic P-diagenesis it remains to be demonstrated whether this procedure can contribute to a re-availability of P-binding sites to guarantee the long-term effect of the measure.

    Notes: In planning a sampling regime, it is desirable that the sampling procedure should involve minimum estimation error for a given sample size or minimum sampling effort for a given accuracy. Two approaches for matching sampling effort to accuracy may be used: a classical approach, which ignores spatial dependence between observations, and uses a random scheme; and a geostatistical approach, which exploits spatial dependence, and uses a systematic scheme. Four Airborne Thematic Mapper images of two British lakes were processed to provide a chlorophyll index, reflecting variations in chlorophyll-a concentration. Spatial structure was characterized using the variogram, and the modelled variogram was used in Kriging to plan sampling regimes for estimating the mean chlorophyll. For a given sample size, the systematic scheme incurred less error than the random scheme; and for a given error, the systematic scheme required smaller sample sizes than the random scheme. The relative advantage of the systematic approach over the random sampling approach increased with an increase in sample size and an increase in the proportion of variance in the data that was spatially dependent. This paper demonstrates that the sampling regime must be calibrated to the spatial dynamics of the lake under investigation, and suggests that remote sensing is the ideal means by which to determine such dynamics.

    Notes: Lake Titicaca is the largest freshwater lake in South America and the highest of the world’s large lakes. The Desaguadero River links Lake Titicaca to lakes Urur Uru and Poopo and, in wet years to the Coipasa Salt Marsh. Lake Titicaca is bordered by both Bolivia and Peru. The main international lake management problem for the Lake Titicaca/Desaguadero River/Lake Poopo system involves the use of water resources. The maximum usable flow in the Titicaca basin (only 20–25 m3 s–1), is dramatically less than the estimated demand. Water transfer and irrigation projects will have to be strictly prioritized on the basis of environmental, social, economic and hydrological criteria. Establishing the overall volume and demand for water in the Titicaca system has been critical to making good management decisions. Agreements for the study and management of Lake Titicaca between Peru and Bolivia date back to 1955 when both countries signed a document declaring ‘the indivisible and exclusive joint ownership of both countries of the waters of the lake’. Over time, the two countries agreed to create a Binational Autonomous Authority that would have full autonomy for Titicaca–Desaguadero/Poopo system decisions related to implementing the master plan that they had developed. Although it is hard to quantify conservation success in large lake regions, water use projects are being prioritized, city wastewater pollution in the Bay of Puno is being reduced and ameliorated and a large biodiversity project through the Global Environment Facility is underway.

    Notes: Bioassays were undertaken in order to test the response of the natural late-summer inoculum of the phytoplankton of a Patagonian Reservoir to the additional nutrients generated by the production of salmon in cages. The results are discussed in relation to a 7 year study of the reservoir and the possible directions of trophic development. The main consequences of fish farming activities in Alicura are likely to lead to an increase in both nutrient concentrations, algal density and phytobiomass. The composition of the sediment close to the fish farm is affected. With regard to phytoplankton, we observed changes in species composition and temporal changes in their associations. The additional nutrient sources of fish food and faeces from salmonid production create an internal load that leads to a decrease in the N/P, Si/P and Ca/P ratios of the water column. The trophic level of Alicura Reservoir remains unchanged at present and the impact of fish farming operation remains localized.

    Notes: The toxins of cyanobacteria include potent neurotoxins and hepatotoxins. Deaths after exposure by ingestion of cyanobacterial cells and toxins from freshwater sources have been reported. The hepatotoxins are cyclic peptides, which comprise microcystins (MC) and nodularin (NOD), and they cause poisonings with an established syndrome of human and animal illnesses. The identification and determination of these hepatotoxic peptides are challenges for analytical chemists. Methods based on solid phase extraction and size exclusion chromatography are available for the clean up of raw extracts. Both principles are also used for the enrichment of MC from low contaminated sample material. The separation of MC is achieved by high-pressure liquid chromatography methods with ultraviolet (UV) detection or mass spectrometric detection. The unambiguous identification of MC not available as standards is possible by mass spectrometry (MS) or, under optimal conditions, by UV spectrometry using diode array detection. To date, 60 different MC and four NOD have been described, but new compounds are frequently identified. Therefore, powerful tools for the elucidation of the structure of unknown MC are an important need. In addition to classical methods for structure elucidation (e.g. nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry), microwave-assisted hydrolysis of cyclic peptides followed by enantio-selective determination of the amino acid profiles can be used. More recently, MS with collision-activated dissociation has become an important tool for obtaining structure information. The present paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the various analytical techniques used for monitoring of cyanobacteria in lakes, optimized or developed at the Institute of Nutrition, Jena, Germany. A pathway for handling MC-containing samples with regard to different analytical tasks (i.e. the identification and elucidation of structure followed by qualitative and quantitative determination) is proposed.

    Notes: This paper combines predictions of the effects of anthropogenic impacts on the plankton of Lake Baikal with models of ecosystem disturbance. Increases in mineralization, non-toxic organic matter, nutrients, phenolic compounds, oil products and heavy metals were simulated. Significantly higher sensitivity of the community below the ice to external influences was demonstrated compared to the summer–autumn community, when there was no ice layer. Models of the distribution of aquatic pollutants demonstrate the occurrence of deviations from ecosystem state parameters in the bottom layer under the influence of pollutant input with precipitation and the distribution of perturbations over greater (up to 500 km) distances. Simulation of pollutant input at present levels shows that Lake Baikal is already perturbed. This is indicated by increases in bacterial and summer phytoplankton biomass and nutrient concentration, and by fluctuations in the zooplankton biomass.

    Notes: Optical and biological measurements were performed in Lake Ülemiste in the summer of 1997 (four measurement days), and from May to October in 1998 (12 measurement days). This kind of data, describing the type and amount of optically active substances in the water, phytoplankton characteristics, the underwater light field, and temperature–oxygen situation in the lake are necessary when estimating the ecological state of the lake. Lake Ülemiste is the main drinking water reservoir of Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. Phytoplankton abundance and biomass, chlorophyll a and suspended matter were determined from collected Lake Ülemiste water samples in the laboratory. Spectrophotometrical processing of the filtered and unfiltered water was carried out to describe the beam attenuation coefficient spectra and optical influence of yellow substance in the water. Vertical profiles of downwelling irradiance of the PAR (400–700 m) region of the spectrum (and from these data the averaged over depth diffuse attenuation coefficient) were determined. The relative transparency of the water was estimated by using a Secchi disk. Passive optical remote measurements were episodically made from aboard a boat. Results obtained confirmed that Lake Ülemiste is turbid (almost hypertrophic), comparable with most turbid lakes in Estonia (e.g. Lake Võrtsjärv) and Finland (Lake Tuusulanjärvi). Its chlorophyll a content varied within the range 13–121 mg m–3, phytoplankton biomass 3–107 mg L–1, phytoplankton abundance 65 000–999 000 mL–1, suspended matter 8–34 mg L–1, effective concentration of the yellow substance 6–30 mg L–1, diffuse attenuation coefficient of light in the PAR region 1.0–3.3 m–1 and a Secchi disk depth of 0.5–1.75 m. The temporal variation of the spatial averages of these parameters during 1998 was analysed. Almost all characteristics showed an increase from May to midsummer with a maximum in late July or in August (correspondingly the Secchi depth values were minimal in late summer). The amount of yellow substance was an exception, which was nearly constant during the observation period. The maximum level of chlorophyll a content in July and August 1998 markedly exceeded that in 1997, despite the fact that the summer of 1997 was sunny, but the summer of 1998 was cold and rainy. The correlative relationships between the different parameters were investigated together with the respective data for other lakes. They show that the data of Lake Ülemiste supplemented the correlation graph in the region of turbid lakes, whereby in all cases the correlation coefficient increased following the addition of Lake Ülemiste data.     Notes: Sixteen populations and 89 individuals of Lactoris fernandeziana were examined for variation in intersimple sequence repeat (ISSR) banding patterns. The species is a rare endemic of Masatierra Island in the Juan Fernández Archipelago, and is the only member of the endemic family Lactoridaceae. Five populations showed a single genotype whereas the other 11 populations had from two to 16 multilocus genotypes. Over 73% of the ISSR diversity occurred across populations, with only about 27% within populations. Diversity among populations results from the presence of different subsets of loci within each population rather than unique loci within populations; only two populations displayed novel loci, with one and three in each. Levels of differentiation at ISSR loci among populations are not correlated with geographic distance on Masatierra; rather, the pattern of variation is mosaic. The presence of differentiated local populations is concordant with the geitonogamous breeding system of the species and suggests low levels of long distance pollen or seed dispersal. The mosaic pattern of ISSR variation on Masatierra may result, in part, from drift and inbreeding in small populations following fragmentation of a once more continuous distribution of Lactoris with the formation of canyons by erosion. Also, the generation of new ISSR loci by mutation could occur with rare, sporadic gene flow among populations accounting for the mosaic pattern of variation and the paucity of unique alleles within populations. The ISSR results for Lactoris suggest that studies of morphological, ecological and physiological features may elucidate differentiation among populations of L. fernandeziana. Field studies have demonstrated that plants occur both in the dense forest understory and in the full sunlight in forest openings.

    Notes: Vertebrate herbivores generally have greater effects than invertebrates on plants. However, few studies have investigated the effects of both invertebrate and vertebrate herbivores on a single plant species. In New Zealand, nationwide declines in mistletoe populations have often been attributed to possum herbivory, but never to insect herbivory. The main goal of the present study was to document levels of vertebrate and invertebrate herbivory on endemic New Zealand mistletoe plants to suggest whether herbivory is leading to mistletoe decline. In the present study, the annual amount of leaf loss from herbivory by the brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula), insect herbivory and leaf abscission were measured in two populations each of three mistletoe species (Alepis flavida, Peraxilla colensoi, and Peraxilla tetrapetala, Loranthaceae). In two populations of each species from February 1997 to February 1998, abscission accounted for the most leaf loss (range 10–84% of total mean leaf area, mean 33%), whereas insects and possums usually removed small and similar amounts (less than 3%). Possum browse caused large amounts of abscission in only one population (A. flavida at Eglinton). Observed possum browse was more heterogeneous than insect browse among branches within a plant (possum coefficient of variation = 2.63, insect CV = 1.98, P 〈 0.001), among plants in a population (possum CV = 2.15, insect CV = 0.69, P 〈 0.001), and between populations (possum CV = 1.36, insect CV = 1.09). Moreover, insects damaged 100% of the study plants but never removed more than 16% of leaf area on a single plant, whereas possums only browsed 32% of the study plants but severely defoliated some plants. Thus, while the mean amount of biomass removed across a population may have important consequences for mistletoe survival, the effect of possums on mistletoe populations may also depend on the heterogeneity of browse among individuals in the population.

    Notes: A previous study (Braithwaite & Muller 1997) reported substantial declines in mammal abundance over the period 1986–1993 for a large study area (300 km2) within Kakadu National Park in the tropical savannas of northern Australia. This decline was reported as being a ‘natural’ response to fluctuating groundwater levels, driven by runs of poor wet seasons. We resampled mammals in this area in 1999, following a series of unusually good wet seasons, and examined the prediction that mammal numbers should have recovered. Increases in abundance were evident for four species: the smallest dasyurid (red-cheeked dunnart Sminthopsis virginiae) and the three smallest rodents (delicate mouse Pseudomys delicatulus, western chestnut mouse Pseudomys nanus and grassland melomys Melomys burtoni). In contrast, the abundance of all mammals combined and that for seven individual mammal species (northern quoll Dasyurus hallucatus, fawn antechinus Antechinus bellus, common brushtail possum Trichosurus vulpecula, northern brown bandicoot Isoodon macrourus, dusky rat Rattus colletti, black-footed tree-rat Mesembriomys gouldii and pale field rat Rattus tunneyi) continued to decline. The decline in abundance of these mammal species is consistent with limited observations elsewhere in northern Australia. Although far from conclusive, these observations suggest that the biota of the vast relatively undisturbed tropical savannas can no longer be assumed to be intact nor safe. Further research is needed to test this possible pattern of decline and, if confirmed, to identify and ameliorate the processes contributing to it.

    Notes: Variation in plant traits among plant species may promote the development of a characteristic functional assemblage of insect herbivores associated with each plant species. However, only a small number of studies have detailed the representation of several herbivore guilds among co-occurring plant species to determine whether the functional structure of herbivorous insect assemblages varies widely and consistently among plant species. The present study provides one of the few published data sets reporting on the density of several guilds of insect herbivores among numerous plant species. Variation in guild associations with plant phenology and season are also described. Insect herbivores were divided into 10 guilds, and the representation of these guilds was examined for 18 co-occurring plant species. Guild densities and assemblage composition varied significantly among plant species, even when variation over time was taken into account. Variation in guild densities and assemblage composition were not strongly related to the taxonomic relationships of the plants. The highest densities of several guilds occurred in spring and summer, although other guilds were not strongly seasonal. Certain guilds were strongly associated with the presence of new leaves, whereas other guilds appeared to prefer mature leaves. This resulted in assemblage differences between samples containing new and mature leaves and samples containing mature leaves only. Even though the timing and duration of leaf and flower production varied among plant species, this did not explain all variation in guild densities among plant species. It is suggested that additional factors, including plant traits, are contributing to the wide and consistent variation in herbivore assemblage composition among plant species.

    Notes: Seed availability may limit the size of granivorous bird populations, particularly in desert environments. Seasonal and annual fluctuations in the abundance of granivorous birds were studied at three sites in the Northern Monte Desert, Argentina. The way in which these changes were related to seed supply was also studied. Granivore abundance and biomass, as well as seed abundance, were greater in winter. Changes in total granivore abundance were mostly because of variations in numbers of the most mobile bird species, all of which were found to have similar patterns of variation in their abundance. Evidence suggests that during the non-breeding season, the most mobile species are able to track patches of high seed availability over long distances, whereas the abundance of less vagile species largely depends on the local ecological conditions. Seed supply is a proximate factor that limits the abundance of granivorous birds in the Monte Desert during the winter, but does not limit species richness. Granivore abundance was not correlated with seed supply in spring.

    Notes: The alpine zone is examined at meso- and microscales in southern Tierra del Fuego (54°49′S), where the full zone is expressed. Mesoscale patterns were studied on opposing aspects, and microscale patterns were studied on a series of solifluction terraces, in a hanging valley overlooking the Beagle Channel. Plant cover and life form data were collected within 50-m altitudinal bands on north and south aspects and comprehensive plant lists were compiled for each band. Topography and associated surface cover were recorded on the terraces. Six alpine plant communities, in lower and upper floristic zones, were differentiated with multivariate analyses and significantly related to five ecological factors. Equivalent communities were separated by approximately 185 m altitude on opposing aspects, which related to a soil temperature difference of approximately 3.0°C. The richness (and range) of 80 local vascular taxa (18.6% of the regional flora), decreased with increasing altitude (6.6 per 100 m); however, richness differed significantly with aspect (north: 5.6, south: 7.5). Upper altitudinal limits (approximately 1250 m a.s.l.), were associated with a midsummer isotherm of approximately 1.7°C. Chamaephytes and hemicryptophytes dominated throughout but the tall tussock form was conspicuously absent. Reasons for this are discussed in the context of the Nothofagus treeline, which conformed to a midsummer isotherm of only approximately 6.0°C. Such patterns are at variance with those found in the oceanic subantarctic islands, other oceanic perhumid temperate mountain regions and tropical high mountains. However, the microscale pattern of fines, pebbles, stones and rock across the active solifluction terraces, with dense vegetation on their steep risers, had a clear affinity with that of other subantarctic regions. Inferences that alpine systems of the Southern Hemisphere are necessarily equivalent to those at similar northern latitudes are cautioned against. Likewise, such comparisons within the Southern Hemisphere may also be invalid.

    Notes: The amount and chemical composition (nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur concentrations) of the components of tree litter were measured in eucalypt woodlands at two sites (Cardigan and Hillgrove) near Charters Towers, Queensland, Australia. Annual litterfall averaged 720 kg ha–1 (Cardigan) and 1270 kg ha–1 (Hillgrove) over 3 years with leaves the major component at both sites. Rate of litterfall was greatest during September–December and lowest during May–July. Nutrient concentrations varied widely but no seasonal patterns were detected. Phosphorus concentrations in the leaf litter at Hillgrove (mean = 0.112%) were much higher than in other studies of eucalypt litter, probably reflecting the high soil phosphorus levels at the study site. Tree litter represents an important proportion of the organic material and nutrients being cycled through these woodlands.

    Notes: The response of a host plant to gall-inducing insects varies both among and within plants, so that different levels of resources are available to the insects. The weevil Collabismus clitellae Boheman induces galls on the shoots of Solanum lycocarpum St Hil. in south-east Brazil. Galls are found on a range of parts within an individual plant and are more abundant on smaller plants. In the present study, the host plant response as a possible influence on the performance of C. clitellae both between and within plants was tested. Gall abortion increased with plant height. Within plants, gall size was positively related to shoot diameter and number of chambers within the gall. The increase in gall larval density (number of individuals per gall volume unit) resulted in smaller adults and reduced developmental rates, probably because of resource limitation within the gall. The number of eggs laid by females increased with shoot diameter. Females laid more eggs on thicker shoots, where there are fewer chances to form galls with high larval density. However, this relationship was weak and a large variation was found for adult sizes. The availability of high quality sites is limited to smaller plants and thicker shoots located on the basal region of the plant. The phenotypic plasticity of this insect species in adult size and development time allows individuals growing on low quality sites to reach maturity, thus enhancing exploitation of the host plant.

    Notes: The present study examined the effects of elevated levels of atmospheric CO2 on foliar concentrations of nitrogen, mineral nutrients and phenolics, and leaf toughness, in seedlings of two common rainforest trees from north-east Queensland, Australia. The trees were the pioneer species Alphitonia petriei Braid and C. White and the mid-successional species Flindersia brayleyana F. Muell. Both species are important in the diets of folivorous marsupials endemic to the region. Seedlings were grown in native rainforest soils (nutrient-rich basalt and nutrient-poor rhyolite) and exposed to unreplicated treatments of ambient (350 p.p.m.) and elevated (790 p.p.m.) CO2 for 60 days in a glasshouse. The foliage of seedlings exposed to elevated CO2 had lower concentrations of nitrogen and sodium than did seedlings exposed to ambient conditions. Nitrogen levels declined by 4.5 mg g-1 in Alphitonia and 5.9 mg/g in Flindersia, or 25 and 29% of ambient levels, respectively. Sodium levels declined by 44% in both species. In Flindersia, concentrations of phosphorus, potassium and calcium were also reduced in elevated CO2 by 19–28% of ambient levels, but these minerals did not vary with CO2 treatment in Alphitonia. In elevated CO2, levels of condensed tannins were higher in Flindersia, but not Alphitonia. Levels of total phenolics did not vary significantly with CO2 in Flindersia; whereas in Alphitonia, total phenolics were lower in elevated CO2, but only on basalt soils. Leaves were thicker in both species in elevated CO2. Leaves were tougher in both species in elevated CO2, but only on rhyolite soils. If the results of the present study can be extrapolated to mature trees exposed to elevated CO2 over the long-term, folivores would be expected to become less abundant under elevated CO2 conditions, as foliar chemistry is a good predictor of folivore abundance in the higher elevation rainforests of north-east Queensland.

    Notes: The effects of atmospheric fluoride pollution on the lizard fauna of the open forest of coastal dunes in New South Wales, Australia were examined. Lizards were pitfall-trapped at sites with background fluoride levels (〈 0.25 μmol F.g–1), or subject to low (1.85–3.4 μmol F.g–1) or high (8.00–13.2 μmol F.g–1) levels of fluoride pollution. Sites had been disturbed by fire or mineral sand-mining 4 or 8 years prior to the study. Fluoride pollution resulted in significant changes to canopy cover, understorey vegetation density and ground cover. Where fluoride levels were low in unmined forest, there was significantly higher species richness, total lizard abundance and abundance of the most common species, Lampropholis guichenoti and Lampropholis delicata (Scincidae), compared with areas of high or background fluoride levels. Both the present and previous studies show that fluoride pollution is significantly correlated with increased abundance of the most common lizard species in sand-mined areas, Ctenotus robustus, Ctenotus taeniolatus (Scincidae) and Amphibolurus muricatus (Agamidae). A discriminant function model of background-fluoride mined sites was used to predict lizard abundances based on vegetation density, leaf litter density and soil hardness. The model was verified by using it to predict similarities between background-fluoride sites and fluoride-affected sites. The sites within each predicted group were more similar in lizard species composition than when grouping of sites was done by time since mining or fire. With this analysis, a close relationship between vegetation variables and the lizard fauna, irrespective of the type of disturbance or time since disturbance, is demonstrated. Discriminant function analysis suggested that Ctenotus would be unlikely to use unmined forest sites that had been burned within 12 months previously. Thus it seems unlikely that the original open forest of these coastal dunes would have supported populations of either C. robustus or C. taeniolatus. In conclusion, the original source of Ctenotus that colonized sand-mined areas is more likely to have been the relatively small areas of heath vegetation in the area. Therefore, sand-mining and atmospheric fluoride pollution result in landscape-scale changes to the relative abundance of lizard species, with forest species becoming less common and lizard species from open areas becoming more common.

    Notes: Matrix population models, elasticity analysis and loop analysis can potentially provide powerful techniques for the analysis of life histories. Data from a capture–recapture study on a population of southern highland water skinks (Eulamprus tympanum) were used to construct a matrix population model. Errors in elasticities were calculated by using the parametric bootstrap technique. Elasticity and loop analyses were then conducted to identify the life history stages most important to fitness. The same techniques were used to investigate the relative importance of fast versus slow growth, and rapid versus delayed reproduction. Mature water skinks were long-lived, but there was high immature mortality. The most sensitive life history stage was the subadult stage. It is suggested that life history evolution in E. tympanum may be strongly affected by predation, particularly by birds. Because our population declined over the study, slow growth and delayed reproduction were the optimal life history strategies over this period. Although the techniques of evolutionary demography provide a powerful approach for the analysis of life histories, there are formidable logistical obstacles in gathering enough high-quality data for robust estimates of the critical parameters.

    Notes: The distribution and area of temporary wetlands across the arid zone of Australia are highly variable. Any change in their distribution or extent due to climate change and/or extraction of water has the potential to adversely impact dependent biota. Satellite imagery was used to determine the spatial and temporal distribution of wetlands across arid Australia over an 11-year period. Synoptic climate data were examined to identify the weather systems that caused wetland filling events. Simple threshold models relating rainfall to wetland filling for seven large regions of Australia were developed to examine patterns of wetland filling over the last 100 years. These data were used to examine the climatic processes that drive wetland filling and the likely impacts of climate change on wetland distribution. The strongest climatic influence on wetland filling in the arid zone was tropical weather systems. Their influence extended into southern regions and their effects were often widespread. Variation in wetland area in all regions of the arid zone was high. The Lake Eyre Basin experienced more large flood events than other regions and had the most large, persistent wetlands that remain unregulated by humans. Hindcasting of past filling events indicated that there was a general pattern of frequent wetland filling across inland Australia in the 1910s, 1950s and 1970s, and less frequent wetland filling in the late 1920s, 1930s and 1960s. Furthermore, there appeared to be no period greater than 12 months over the previous 95 years when there was no predicted wetland filling in the arid zone. Wetland ecosystems dependent on a few infrequent heavy rainfalls are clearly vulnerable to any change in frequency or magnitude of these events. Climate change that results in a drying or reduced frequency of large flood events, exacerbated by extraction of water for agriculture, could be catastrophic for some biota, particularly waterbirds, which use a mosaic of wetland habitat at broad spatial scales.

    Notes: Lake Orta became heavily polluted in 1926 by ammonium sulphate and copper. After a couple of years the biological communities became extremely simplified and were composed of a few resistant species. This acute copper pollution was followed by a chronic acidification of the water, brought about by in-lake biochemical oxidation of ammonium. Since the 1960s, heavy metals discharged from some plating factories became an additional source of pollution. After the reduction of ammonium discharge in 1982 and from May 1989 to June 1990 the lake was limed: the pH at overturn increased from pH 4.4 to 5.9, the metals’ concentration decreased and the number of planktonic taxa rapidly increased.The present paper deals with the recent (1992–1997) evolution of the phytoplankton communities analysed by sample clustering: the cluster analysis indicates the separation of two large groups of samples (1992–1993 and 1995–1997). Such clustering is because of the gradual decline of the chlorophytes (for a long period the most important group in Lake Orta) between 1992 and 1994, followed by their marked decrease between 1995 and 1997, during which they were replaced by blue–green algae.Also noticeable was the increase in diatoms, which had disappeared from the phytoplankton community from the 1930s until 1994, but during spring and summer 1997 they amounted to 40% of community abundance. Although it is now possible to describe a phytoplanktonic seasonal succession in Lake Orta, the dissimilarities shown by the cluster analysis seem to indicate the existence of a certain year-to-year variability inside the dominant species assemblage, meaning that the phytoplankton community is still evolving.In spite of the phytoplankton’s fast recovery after liming, it is only since 1994 that the algal community started to change toward a phytoplankton assemblage more typical of deep subalpine lakes.
