    Notes: SUMMARY. 1. It is argued that modern limnology is excessively concerned with the study of fresh waters in the northern temperate region. Limnology has been and is unbalanced in its interests and emphases and, as a result, many widely held limnological concepts need revision.2. The genesis of the argument is outlined. It involved the initial assumption that Australia was limnologically distinctive. Later, it was realized that since most of the world is arid, semi-arid, tropical or semi-tropical, Australia was much less distinctive than originally thought.3. Other limnological assumptions considered in the paper concern saline lakes and salinization, the importance and nature of temporary bodies of standing fresh water, biological diversity in tropical fresh waters, the evolutionary importance of permanent freshwater lakes, and the global applicability of the River Continuum Concept. Consideration suggests that some widely-held views on these matters are erroneous.4. Thus, saline lakes are more important (scientifically, commercially), widespread and numerous environments than is generally thought. Salinization is a significant environmental hazard for many rivers in semiarid regions. Temporary bodies of standing fresh water are geographically widespread and abundant aquatic environments with high species diversity, and in which many species have restricted distributions and low dispersal abilities. Biological diversity appears to be low in tropical fresh waters. Permanent freshwater lakes are perhaps less important loci for the evolution of the freshwater biota than generally thought, temporary fresh waters more so. Finally, the River Continuum does not seem to be applicable to many running waters outside the north temperate region.5. A number of suggestions are made of how a better balance in limnology may be arrived at: how a more globally comprehensive intellectual framework may be built. Suggestions include: an increased awareness of the frequently different natures of waters within and beyond the northern temperate region; recognition of the potential benefits to be gained from the study of waters outside the northern temperate region;

    Notes: SUMMARY. Asellus aquaticus and A. meridianus are freshwater isopods common more or less throughout Britain. It has been suggested that the former species is replacing the latter. To investigate this, the distributions of the species were determined in the English Lake District, near Merseyside, and elsewhere. Additionally, some field transference experiments were conducted in Anglesey and near Merseyside. Particular attention was given to changes in distribution with time; many of the observations reported relate to a time span of almost 20 years. Taken together, the results provide qualified support for the suggestion that A. aquaticus is replacing A. meridianus.

    Notes: SUMMARY. Oxygen consumption of P. zietziana was measured monthly in two saline (〉60‰ salinity) lakes from November 1973 to November 1975 with short (〈2 h) in situ incubations in BOD bottles. Tests in which oxygen decline was monitored continuously showed that there was no handling effect and respiratory rate was constant down to 1.8–1.9 mg O2 1−1, about 40% of the usual initial concentration. Incubations over 24 h demonstrated no diurnal fluctuations in oxygen consumption. Multiple regression analysis indicated that 90% of the variance in respiratory rate (R in mg O2x10−4h−1 individual−1) was accounted for by changes in salinity (3%; S in ‰), temperature (7%; T in °C) and dry weight (8%; W in mg × 10−3): log R =−1.123+0.0025+0.021 T+ 0.756 log W. From this equation and data on population density, population respiration was calculated: 91864.5 mg O2 m−2 year−1 in Pink Lake and 12367.5 mg O2 m−2year−1 in Lake Cundare.

    Notes: The salinity tolerance and osmoregulatory ability of Galaxias maculatus were investigated. In the field this species has been recorded from salinities of less than 1‰ to 49‰. In the laboratory, upper L.D.50 salinity values of 62‰ after gradual acclimation and 45‰ after direct transfer were established. Within the salinity range of its field occurrence the species is a powerful osmoregulator, being able both to hypo- and hyper-osmoregulate.

    Notes: Lake Corangamite in western Victoria, Australia, is the largest permanent lake on the Australian mainland. Its levels and salinities fluctuated naturally until recently. Since about 1960, its major inflow creek has been diverted for management purposes and lake levels have fallen and salinities risen. The changes have been most profound since 1980. Since 1980, salinity has risen from ∼35g/L to 〉50g/L, water levels have fallen by nearly 2m, and many islands have become peninsulas or have disappeared. The major effect has been a change in the composition of the biota from one that is characteristic of lakes in the region of moderate salinity (〉35g/L) to one that is characteristic of more saline lakes (50-100 g/L). In particular, Austrochiltonia subtenuis (Amphipoda), Coxiella (Gastropoda), Galaxias maculatus (Pisces) and Ruppia (macrophyte) have almost disappeared. The loss of these species has greatly decreased the value of the lake to the avifauna in particular and as a natural resource in general.The changes to Lake Corangamite resulted largely from the diversion of the inflowing waters from the Woady Yaloak Creek, the major influent stream, into the Barwon River. The diversion scheme, undertaken by the Rural Water Commission of Victoria, was implemented mainly to minimize the possibility of flooding of land adjacent to the lake. The environmental consequences of such diversion were not fully considered. The paper documents the physico-chemical and biological changes that occurred up to 1992, and discusses issues of conservation and management interest associated with the changes. Changes in the level of Lake Corangamite and associated limnological features accord with the pattern observed in many salt lakes worldwide.
