    Notes: The essential cause of the growth of pore pressure during cyclic loading is identified as an ‘autogenous’ shrinkage or densification of the solid phase of the soil and this is related to a strain path parameter. Introduction of this ‘shrinkage’ coupled with an elasto-plastic behaviour of the soil skeleton allows a full non-linear dynamic analysis to be conducted up to the point of structural failure for any earthquake input. Explicit time marching procedures are used. The procedure outlined is applicable to all problems of complex geometry and for conditions of undrained or partially drained behaviour at a moderate computational cost.

    Notes: Three constitutive models of soil are used in finite element analyses of lateral earth pressure and bearing capacity. The three models are an elasto-plastic formulation derived from the Mohr-Coulomb law, a similar model with the plastic dilatancy removed, and a strain hardening model with a capped yield criterion. Stiffness formulations are described; the non-dilatant model has a non-symmetric stiffness. The results for the retaining walls are in close agreement with classical soil mechanics, but the bearing capacity analyses greatly overestimate the bearing capacity. The patterns of motion are, however, reasonable. Reasons for the discripancies in the bearing capacity case include: (a) the elements are too stiff and do not permit sliding on discrete failure planes; (b) the bearing capacity problem is itself not well settled theoretically; (c) very fine element divisions are necessary in areas of strong stress gradients and (d) rotation of principal stresses is significant.

    Notes: The problem of plates on consolidating soil is considered. Biot's three-dimensional consolidation theory, the generalization of Terzaghi's model, is employed to account for the consolidation process. A mathematical model is developed and the differential equations governing the system together with the proper boundary conditions are derived. A variational formulation of the problem and a convenient approximate method of solution are also presented.For numerical analysis, the problem of a rectangular plate on consolidating soil under various loading conditions is numerically solved and the effects of various physical factors on the settlements and the pore pressures are studied.

    Notes: An anisotropic hardening model for soils is proposed by applying the concept of a field of hardening moduli developed previously for metals. Besides the yield surface, a set of nesting surfaces in the stress-space specifies the variation of hardening moduli during the deformation process. Both drained and undrained soil behaviour can be treated and distortional as well as volumetric strain cycles can be considered. The model can be applied in studying soil behaviour under cyclic loading and in particular to describe densification or liquefaction phenomena.

    Notes: An approximate method, using a simplified soil model, for predicting the behaviour of raft foundations subjected to applied vertical forces and moments will be outlined. Results obtained for circular rafts of finite rigidity are compared with those obtained, from more rigorous solutions, by other authors. Satisfactory agreement is obtained for the surface settlements and raft bending moments over a wide range of soil inhomogeneity. Finally, the versatility of the method of analysis is illustrated for an unusual asymmetrical structure. Computed total and differential settlements are shown to be in reasonable agreement with measured values and those predicted by an independent plane strain finite element analysis.

    Notes: Numerical codes which use a one-point quadrature integration rule to calculate stiffness matrices for the 2-D quadrilateral element and the 3-D hexahedral element, produce matrices which are singular with respect to a number of displacement patterns, other than the rigid body patterns. In this paper an economical method is derived to remove this singularity and which also produces accurate flexural response. For rectilinear element geometry the method is equivalent to the incompatible model element of Wilson et al.7 For non-rectilinear element geometry a slight modification of the scheme is required in order to assure that it passes the patch test. The method of this paper can also be used in finite difference codes which experience similar difficulties.

    Notes: The paper reports on the results of theoretical and experimental investigations on the spontaneous formation of shear bands in sand bodies. The phenomenon is considered as a bifurcation problem. Consequently, material response and configuration-dependent loading determine the bifurcation mode. Both Coulomb's and Roscoe's solutions of inclination of the shear band can be correct theoretically and experimentally. The first one holds for non-rotating stress axes, the second one for co-rotating stress and strain increment axes during failure. Values in between can occur if the rotation of principal stress axes is not equal to one of these limits. If Coulomb's inclination of shear band occurs, there is a thin deforming material layer separating rigid bodies. Inside the shear band non-coaxiality of strain increment and stress holds from the beginning. If Roscoe's inclination of shear band occurs, it is separating two deforming bodies. Inside the shear band strain increment and stress are coaxial at peak.

    Notes: Localization of deformation in elastic-plastic solids subject to plane strain deformation are investigated numerically. It is shown that the localization may be captured accurately in finite element models by employing (1) the elastic-plastic material stiffness to form the global stiffness, (2) in the case of symmetrical configurations, an imperfection in the form of a weak element, and (3) in the case of incompressible materials, a reduced selective integration scheme which alleviates mesh ‘locking’. Accuracy of the technique is demonstrated by applying it to analyse the classical punch and slope stability problems. Its versatility is illustrated by applying it to analyse finite deformation problems and shear bands formations in associative and non-associative elastic-plastic solids.

    Notes: A method is devised for measuring soil thermal diffusivity in situ. It is based on direct experimental simulation of the finite difference approximation to the one-dimensional heat conduction equation.The method does not require the soil to be homogeneous except between the three thermometers that are used, at depths z + d, z and z - d. Nor need the energy input curve be sinusoidal. However, it must be fairly smooth for the finite difference approximation to be accurate.Experimental results for London Clay are presented, obtained using thermometers at depths of 1, 6 and 11 cm to give a mean thermal diffusivity of 0.0074 cm2/s at a depth of 6 cm. This value is consistent with other estimates of diffusivity for clay soils.The method is capable of automation, and should be suitable for use on engineering sites, at low cost.The method is capable of generalization to other linear diffusion equations containing one independent parameter. The same limitation also applies to its application to constitutive or geometrical non-linear one dimensional diffusion equations, and each equation requires individual study to assess feasibility of use of the method.The method in effect uses the usual finite difference approximation, not to prepare a numerical solution, but to design an experiment carried out essentially within the finite difference ‘molecule’. The measured parameter of the diffusion equation is the usable product of the method.

    Notes: The pressure versus settlement response is highly non-linear for soils, in general. In the present study, a cubic equation of the type p = K1w - K2w3 is suggested to incorporate the non-linear behaviour. A trapezoidal footing with constant depth resting on a subgrade having non-linear response is analysed. The resulting fourth order non-linear differential equation with variable coefficients is solved by using the Galerkin technique and beam characteristic functions are employed to obtain faster convergence. The results are presented in the form of non-dimensional charts for valid ranges of footings and soil parameters.

    Notes: The analysis of mechanisms which could control the growth of fractures in non-homogeneous regions is of paramount importance. One such mechanism is the behavior of the fracture as it reaches a frictional interface; coupled with this is the question of re-initiation, e.g. whether a fracture can be contained within the region of initiation. Though the problems of slippage have been dealt with by other investigators, the present paper gives a more comprehensive picture and detailed treatment: effects of various frictional models at an interface are considered for a crack which intersects it at any angle; specialization then allows comparison with existing results in the literature.The problem of re-initiation, after slippage has occurred at a frictional interface, is also considered, using two different models. First, by introducing microcracks in the adjacent stratum and looking at the effects on propagation criteria and, secondly, by examining the actual distribution of the stress tangential to the slip surface; detailed computations are performed and a simple criterion for re-initiation is given, relating the re-initiation stress dominantly to the confining stress on the interface.

    Notes: The use of discrete models for the dynamic analysis of a contiuum requires the existence of a finite domain with well defined boundaries. When these boundaries do not exist naturally but have to be artificially imposed it may be necessary to apply appropriate conditions on forces or displacements at the boundary nodes to reproduce the physical behaviour of the actual problem. In the solution of soil structure interaction problems these conditions are simulated through the use of transmitting boundaries. In this paper several of these boundaries are evaluated comparing the results they produce in the amplification of seismic motions, the determination of foundation stiffnesses and the structural response. The distance of the boundaries to the zone of interest, the level of excitation (influencing the amount of internal soil damping), the geometry of the problem (finite soil layer versus a half-space) and the relative frequency of the structure with respect to the soil and the specified motion are all parameters which must be taken into account for this evaluation.

    Notes: A finite element study is presented of the short-term effects that develop when a tunnel is driven in a ground showing viscous behaviour associated with the deviatoric deformations. Axisymmetric conditions around the tunnel centreline are assumed and the process of excavation is simulated by means of a step-by-step time incremental technique. The Kelvin's model is used to approximate the medium creep behaviour and a simple procedure is presented that allows the determination of the creep model constants from the laboratory test data. Various rates of advancing, the presence of an unsupported zone close to the tunnel face and the temporary interruption of the excavation process are considered. For the viscous model and the analytical technique used, simple, approximate relationships are presented for the displacements around the tunnel and the overexcavation volume as functions of the rate of excavation advancing.

    Notes: Incremental theory of plasticity has been used to derive associated and non-associated stress-strain relations for analysing the undrained stress-strain response of isotropic normally and lightly overconsolidated clays. A series of comparisons between the theoretical stress-strain-pore pressure response and laboratory test results for 3 in. × 6 in. samples of very high degree of repeatability and reproduceability have been described. From these comparisons it can be seen that both the associated and, non-associated Cam clay models appear to give consistently the best correlations between the theoretical results and the experimental observations.

    Notes: An investigation was conducted to develop a comprehensive moisture model for predicting non-isothermal moisture conditions in soils. An extensive literature review indicated that a model based on the Philip and de Vries equations for non-isothermal moisture movement and heat conduction would give the best results. By using numerical methods, the implicit finite difference approximations to the moisture movement and heat-transfer equations were programmed for computer solution of water content and temperature in the soil with time.Validation studies indicate that the moisture model can be used to predict accurately moisture conditions in the soil. The model was validated by using hydraulic data from laboratory studies conducted on soil columns compacted with AASHO A-3 and AASHO A-4 soil.The application of the moisture model to the study of non-isothermal moisture movement in the field is demonstrated. The influence of parameters such as water table depth, precipitation, and soil hydraulic properties on soil moisture content are shown by use of the moisture model. The model is shown to be applicable to a wide range of boundary conditions and that it predicts the moisture-temperature regime with time in soils utilizing climatic input data.

    Notes: The paper deals with the determination of the flow properties of expansive and unsaturated clays under different conditions of stress. By choosing the moisture content as the dependent variable, the well known non-linear diffusin equation is derived. Numerical solutions using a finite element program are presented, assuming a linear relationship between the moisture diffusivity and the concentration (the relative moisture content). These solutions are interpreted and a procedure is proposed to derive the flow properties of the clay from the sorption curves. Results of tests are presented and used to illustrate the procedure. It is found that the lower the stress applied, the smaller the initial moisture diffusivity and the stronger the dependence of the moisture diffusivity upon the concentration.

    Notes: The equations governing the undrained linear elastic behaviour of a saturated soil are formally similar to the equations governing slow of an incompressible Newtonian viscous fluid. This principle of equivalence can then be effectively employed to obtain the load-deflection reiationship for a deep rigid anchor with the shape of a solid of revolution which is embedded in bonded contact with an unbounded incompressible elastic medium. It is found that the load-deflection relationship for the deep rigid anchor can be directly recovered from the expression for the drag induced on an impermeable object with the same size and shape as the anchor, which is appropriately placed in a slow viscous flow region of uniform velocity.

    Notes: The effects and simulation of driving of structures (piles) into saturated soil media are discussed, and procedures for numerical simulation of driving are proposed. Consolidation caused by changes in stresses and in pore water pressures in the soil mass due to the driving is solved by using a finite element procedure. The changes in stresses and pore water pressures due to driving are obtained on the basis of the cavity expansion approach, and are introduced in the finite element procedure as initial conditions.     Notes: The paper deals with the propagation of shock waves at the surface of soils. Heterogeneity and damping are introduced into analytical half-space solutions. The suggested model explains two phenomena, often observed with shock propagation in actual soils, that differ from the behaviour of the homogeneous half-space: the pronounced decay of the disturbances with distance and the elongation of the disturbance into a train of waves. The effects of heterogeneity and damping are discussed quantitatively.The response of footings on heterogeneous soils has been investigated by several authors. Awojobi4 considered the Gibson soil in which the shear modulus increases linearly with depth. Luco5 and Gazetas and Roesset6 investigated a multi-layered soil, the shear modulus being constant within each layer. Gazetas7, using a technique suggested by Gupta8 extended this method to layers with linearly varying shear modulus. Little work is available on the propagation of waves in heterogeneous bodies. Some results concerning the modes and the mode shapes in heterogeneous soils were reported by Ewing, Jardetzky and Press9 and Bath.10 The modes have to be superposed in an appropriate way to obtain the displacement field at the surface. This has been approximately achieved by the finite element formulations of Lysmer, 11, Lysmer and Waas12 and Waas.13 Auersch14 applied this method to a homogeneous layer on a rigid base. He found some dispersion of the Rayleigh wave within a narrow frequency range. Finite elements combined with discrete Laplace transforms, however, consume much computer time. Rao and Goda15 and Rao16 calculated surface vibrations of a half-space with exponentially varying shear modulus and density. Their method is similar to Lamb'S1 procedure for the homogeneous half-space. Only one mode-the Rayleigh wave-occurs in their heterogeneous half-space. The examples show the considerable effect of heterogeneity on wave propagation. In the present paper, more general variations of the shear modulus are considered.

    Notes: Recent investigations on the hypoplastic constitutive model for granular materials show that the failure surface can be surpassed by some stress paths. This is contradictory to the conventional definition of failure surface in plasticity, according to which the stress is allowed to move on the failure surface but never across it. In the present paper, the interrelations among the different constitutive models are discussed with special reference to failure and stability. For the hypoplastic constitutive equation, the accessible stress states and the stable stress states are found to be enclosed by a bound surface and a stability surface in the stress space, respectively.     Notes: A simple analytical procedure that applies classical beam-column theory for evaluating passive rockbolt roof reinforcement is presented in this paper. The analytical model is derived from first principles and is capable of modelling any number of reinforcing bolts. Each rockbolt is modelled as a linear spring and the model allows for non-uniform bolt spacing. In this study the rock beam is assumed to be isotropic and linearly elastic for the sake of simplicity. However, the analytical model can be extended to include anisotropic rockmass as well as inelastic material behaviour. The solution to the coupled set of governing equations is obtained by using a simple numerical solution procedure. The results from the analytical model indicate that the critical buckling load of a rock beam is strongly influenced by the ambient rock modulus. For salt-rock excavations the rock modulus typically declines with time due to various phenomena, and a diminished modulus could seriously compromise roof stability. The other main conclusion of this study is that rockbolts loose their effectiveness in restraining a roof beam once its critical buckling load is approached. In such a situation, increasing bolt stiffness does not improve its reinforcing action on a roof beam but it enhances the possibility of bolt failure due to anchor pull-out. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     Notes: In this paper, a new generator algorithm and a computer program PG2D is introduced for 2D numerical simulation of packing configuration in a granular material composed of elliptical particles of different a/b aspect ratios. Each elliptical particle is approximated by four connected arcs. The centre co-ordinates and radius of each arc and co-ordinates of connecting points can be determined from the formulae derived by entering the major axis length, 2a, and the eccentricity. The domain to be filled with particles can be a polygon of any shape. Given the size of the packing domain, geometrical information and numbers of particles to be generated, the packing location of each particle and the co-ordinates of contact points along with contact normal rose diagram can be generated as outputs.Simulation results show that this new algorithm can provide quite a reasonable packing model in accordance with the initial input required for the analysis of the mechanics of granular material. This generation scheme has the potential to cover packing generation and behaviour analysis of 3D sphere or ellipsoidal shaped granular materials. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: A parallel numerical finite difference model, employing the self-implicit method, for coupled heat and moisture transfer in unsaturated soil is presented. The model is programmed in Occam and executed on a parallel computing network of transputers. An assessment of the model was achieved via the simulation of a laboratory experiment. A very good correlation between experimental and numerical results was obtained. Comparison of results with those obtained from a parallel explicit method is also illustrated showing no significant difference. The computational time employing the new method was, however, found to be half of that obtained using the explicit method. Non-dimensional charts have been developed comprehensively to establish the successive positions of a phreatic surface with the passage of time for any given values of permeability of soil and its specific yield. The effect of spacing to depth ratios of drains on their performance has been examined in detail. The rate of downward movements of the phreatic surface decreases with time as well as with increases in the spacing of drains. The spacing affects considerably the magnitudes of drawdown at distant locations from the drains, whereas close to the drains, its effect becomes insignificant. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: This paper presents a piecewise-linear finite-difference model for one-dimensional large strain consolidation called CS2. CS2 is developed using a fixed Eulerian co-ordinate system and constitutive relationships which are defined by discrete data points. The model is dimensionless such that solutions are independent of the initial height of the compressible layer and the absolute magnitude of the hydraulic conductivity of the soil. The capability of CS2 is illustrated using four example problems involving small strain, large strain, self-weight, and non-linear constitutive relationships. In each case, the performance of the model is comparable to other available analytical and numerical solutions. Using CS2, correction factors are developed for the conventional Terzaghi theory which account for the effect of vertical strain on computed values by elapsed time and maximum excess pore pressure during consolidation. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: The main purpose of this investigation is to study the state of stress of layered rocks forming slopes of deep river valleys. For this purpose averaging technique and a variant of the Variation-Difference Method are used. Because of the averaging method, equivalent homogeneous properties of layered elastic medium are determined. The paper has two parts. The first one is devoted to the analysis of a static stress-strain state of the slopes under gravity. The rock mass in the second part is subjected to dynamic loading caused by an earthquake. As a result of the numerical solution of the raised problems, the stress distribution in slopes and at the base of a deep canyon-like river valley was obtained. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: A variational approach for the analysis of vertical deformation of pile groups is presented. The method assumes that the deformation of piles can be represented by a finite series. The method applies the principle of minimum potential energy to determine the deformation of piles. Using this method, an analytical solution for pile groups in soil modelled by the theoretical load-transfer curves can be obtained rigorously. Analysis of field tests indicates that the method can predict the performance of pile groups reasonably well.

    Notes: In this paper a finite element formulation for a linear viscoelastic ageing material is developed. It is shown that these equations can be solved in the from of an eigenvalue expansion thus reducing the problem to the solution of a set of Volterra Integral equations. An alternative method of solution based on expansion in terms of an operator related to Poisson's ratio is also developed and this solution method is found to significantly reduce the computational effort necessary in the solution of aproblem.

    Notes: A tow-dimensional finite difference wave propagation code was used to analyse the impact of a rigid, ogival-nosed penetrator with a target consisting of thin alternating layers of silt, sand, and clay. The response of the idealized target was described with an elastic-plastic constitutive model depending upon two stress invariants and the history of plastic deformation. Interfacial friction between the penetrator and target was assumed to be negligible.Comparisons are made of calculated results and those of nominally similar experiments conducted at the Watching Hill test site in Alberta, Canada. Analysis of these comparisons reveals that numerical methods like the one employed in this study can yield insight into penomena, as well as suggesting possible improvements in the calculation technique.

    Notes: The paper presents an analytical study of the consolidation of a semi-infinite clay layer subjected to a shear load distributed over a rectangular area. Biot's theory is made use of, along with the three displacement functions suggested by Verruijt. A complex Fourier and Laplace transformation technique enables the solution to be obtained in terms of non-dimensional parameters. Settlements and pore pressures under the loaded area are evaluated for two types of surface drainage conditions. Extension of the solutions to point loads is also suggested. The Mandel-Cryer effect is seen in the behaviour of the pore pressure.

    Notes: A set of coupled field equations is developed for transport of liquid brine in natural rock salt. The natural rock salt consists of individual crystals brought together so that only a portion of the crystal faces or grain boundaries contribute to the hydraulically connected pore space. Transport of brine inclusions within individual crystals is considered to be thermally driven; whereas transport along crystal interfaces or grain boundaries is considered to be pressure driven. The field equations for both transport mechanisms are developed and incorporated in a finite element program. An analytical solution to a one-dimensional boundary value problem is derived and compared to the finite element solution. An application of the finite element code to radioactive waste emplacement is briefly discussed.

    Notes: A computational procedure for simulating heat conduction in fractured rock masses is proposed and illustrated within the context of the finite element method. The procedure makes use of simple local models for conduction in the vicinity of a single open fracture. The local models allow effective thermal properties for fractured rock to be expressed in terms of fracture characteristics such as spacing, orientation and aperture. The distributions of fractures and fracture properties within the finiteelement model are derived from a statistical representation of geological field data. The procedure is demonstrated to satisfactorily reproduce heat transfer results across single fractures and provide an efficient means of representing conduction in formations with multiple fractures.

    Notes: One proposed geothermal heat extraction scheme relies on water circulation in a large vertical crack created by hydraulic fracturing in a hot dry impermeable rock mass. Water flow, heat convection and crack opening widths are analysed by finite elements. Governing field equations of the problem are first set up rigorously and then various small terms are identified and neglected, retaining the effects of pressure gradient, buoyancy, velocity head (kinetic energy) and head loss due to viscous friction in the water flow equation, and the effects of heat convection in water and heat conduction in rock in the heat transfer equation. The finite element scheme for water flow is based on a variational principle that is typical for diffusion problems, and for heat transfer it is based on the method of least-square residuals. The system of differential equations is highly non-linear. The non-linear terms and coefficients are treated in the fiaite element analysis as constant; the finite element analysisof, the steady-state pressures, fluxes and temperatures is then iterated, evaluating all non-linear terms and coefficients on the basis of the solution obtained in the previous iteration. Numerically calculated fields at various times after the start ofcooling are presented. They indicate some features favourable for the geothermal scheme, such as formation of eddy currents, and downward flux of water toward hotter rock. However, other important questions would have to be solved to gain full understanding, of this proposed geothermal scheme.

    Notes: A method is derived to estimate the degree of consolidation of a saturated, non-homogeneous clay layer. In this method, the diffusion equation govering the dissipation of pore water pressure is transformed so that the pore water pressure can be expressed by a Fourier series. The Fourier coefficients are then evaluated along the trajectory of the diffusion process. The Fourier series does not converge point-wise to the pore water pressure; instead, it converges to the pore water pressure in the mean., The Fourier series can be used to estimate the degree of consolidation, because, by Schwartz's inequality, convergence in the mean implies convergence in the degree of consolidation.

    Notes: The restrictions imposed by the form-invariance principle on the structure of the elasto-plastic constitutive law for small strains are examined. It is shown that the yield and plastic potential functions may depend on the joint invariants of the stress and plastic strain tensors in addition to their dependence on the direct invariants of these tensors and additional scalar hardening parameters such as the plastic work; inclusion of the joint invariants as parameters in the constitutive functions allows for induced anisotropy during plastic deformation. It is demonstrated that the physical meaning of the joint invariants is related to the deviation of the principal directions of the stress tensor from those of the plastic strain tensor. It is also shown that only three cases of anisotropy (orthorhombic, transverse and isotropy) are possible in the types of material models discussed herein. The model proposed in this paper does not imply coaxiality between the principal directions of the stress and, plastic strain increment tensors; however, implications of the assumption of coaxiality on the structure of the constitutive equations is investigated. It is shown that coaxiality does not necessarily imply isotropy, but no deviations from coaxiality can be expected in isotropic materials.

    Notes: The erosion model computes the rill and inter-rill flow over a surface with random roughness, and the erosion caused by this flow. The measured roughness of a surface is analysed and used to generate random surfaces for the simulation process. Computations are carried out over a number of time intervals; the steady state condition is assumed for each interval. Changes in the surface geometry due to erosion during an interval are used to revise the surface for the subsequent interval.     Notes: The upstream-weighted finite element method with lumped mass matrix is applied to the modelling of oil migration in compacting sedimentary basins. An implicit formulation is made in Lagrangian co-ordinates of a pressure, saturation and a temperature equation, which is based on immiscible two-phase flow of oil and water. The formulation accounts for the compaction of the sediments, the generation of oil from solid organic material (kerogen), the eventual pore space generated by kerogen breakdown, and the density variations of the fluids which may set up thermal convection. The model is validated by comparison with results from a one-dimensional (1D) fractional flow-based migration model. A 2D case example showing oil expulsion from source rocks, and the filling of a trap is presented. The mass balance of the model is easily checked because all oil in the basin originates from breakdown of kerogen. Compared with other alternatives, the simple upstream-weighted finite element method is suggested as a possible first choice for a numerical method for the modelling of oil migration in compacting sedimentary basins. It easily deals with the complex geometry of a basin, it yields reasonably good results, is simple to implement, and the same implementation applies to all spatial dimensions. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A new concept called ‘thermal void ratio state surface’ is introduced to include thermal effects, and the stress state level influence on volume changes. The fluid phase flows according to Darcy's law and energy transport is assumed to follow Fourier's law classically. Variation of water permeability, water and solid unit weight due to thermal effects and pore pressure changes are included. A finite element package is developed based on final matrix form obtained from discretization of integral form of field equations by finite element method and integration in time. A very good agreement between the theoretical predictions and the experimental results was obtained for the several simple problems proposed by other authors. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: The objective of this work was to evaluate the theoretical capabilities of the non-destructive impact-response method in detecting the existence of a single defect in a pile, its location and its length. The cross-section of the pile is assumed to be circular and the defects are assumed to be axisymmetric in geometry. As mentioned in the companion paper, special codes utilizing one-dimensional (1-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) axisymmetric finite element models were developed to simulate the responses of defective piles to an impact load. Extensive parametric studies were then performed. In each study, the results from the direct use of time histories of displacements or velocities and the mechanical admittance (or mobility) function were compared in order to assess their capabilities.     Notes: A numerical technique is presented for the analysis of surface displacements of a non-homogeneous elastic half-space subjected to vertical and/or horizontal surface loads uniformly distributed over an arbitrarily shaped area. The non-homogeneity considered is a particular form of power variation of Young's modulus with depth. Since the exponent which determines the degree of non-homogeneity may vary from zero to unity, both the homogeneous half-space and the Gibson soil may be included as limiting cases in a single numerical scheme. In order to account for the arbitrary shape of the loading, the boundary of the loaded area is linearized piecemeal. This enables the modeling of any load pattern according to the desired degree of accuracy. Special attention is focused on the integration scheme, since the singularity associated with the Green's function becomes progressively more pronounced the greater the non-homogeneity parameter gets. The performance of the numerical procedure is studied using analytical solutions for rectangular shaped areas. Further comparisons with well-known solutions based on integral transform techniques for a uniformly distributed load acting on a circular area of the non-homogeneous soil mass show excellent agreement as well. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: By making use of limit analysis, an upper bound solution in a closed form for determining the ultimate pullout capacity of plate anchors buried in sandy slopes has been established. The anchor plate orientation has been considered either horizontal or parallel to the slope, with the pullout force applied perpendicular to the plate. It has been found that the pullout capacity for horizontal anchors, even on slopes, remains the same as that on horizontal ground surface as long as the average embedment ratio is kept constant. Whereas for anchors which are aligned parallel to the slope the collapse load decreases continuously with the increase in the inclination of slope. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: In 1986, the Malaysian Highway Authority constructed a series of trial embankments on the Muar Plain (soft marine clay) with the aim of evaluating the effectiveness of various ground improvement techniques. This study investigates the effect of two such ground improvement schemes: (a) preloading of foundation with surface geogrids and synthetic vertical drains and (b) sand compaction piles. The paper is focused on the finite element analysis of settlements and lateral displacements of the soft foundation. In scheme (a), the numerical predictions are compared with the field measurements. In scheme (b), only the numerical analysis is presented and discussed in the absence of reliable measurements due to the malfunctioning of the electronic extensometer and inclinometer system during embankment construction. The current analysis employs critical state soil mechanics, and the deformations are predicted on the basis of the fully coupled (Biot) consolidation model. The vertical drain pattern is converted to equivalent drain walls to enable plane strain modelling, and the geogrids are simulated by linear interface slip elements. The effect of sand compaction piles is investigated considering both ideal drains and non-ideal drains, as well as varying the pile stiffness. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: A two-dimensional fracture model based on micro-fracture mechanics is applied to the Hertzian indentation stress field to simulate subsurface fractures in an axi-symmetrical plane. The simulation of fracture development reveals quantitatively the effects of loading force, mechanical properties of the rocks, and original micro cracks on the formation of subsurface fractures. The distribution patterns of the subsurface fractures are determined by the magnitudes and trajectories of the indentation stresses. Lateral confinement prohibits the fracture development.     Notes: A large-strain elastoplastic analysis is presented for a cylindrical cavity embedded in an infinite medium under uniform radial pressure. The investigation employs invariant, non-associated deformation-type theories for Mohr-Coulomb (M-C) and Drucker-Prager (D-P) solids, accounting for arbitrary hardening, with the equivalent stress as the independent variable. The M-C model results in a single first-order differential equation, whereas for the D-P solid an algebraic constraint supplements the governing differential equation. Material parameters and response characteristics were determined by calibrating the models with data from triaxial compression tests on Castlegate sandstone and on Jurassic shale. A comparison is presented between predictions obtained from the two models and experimental data from hollow cylinder tests under external loading. A sensitivity of the results to material parameters, like friction and dilation angles, is provided for the case of a cavity subjected to internal pressure in terms of limit pressure predictions. In all cases it has been found that the results of the D-P inner cone model are in close agreement with those obtained from the M-C model. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: An alternative approach for calculating the surface displacements of a non-homogeneous half-space acted upon by a vertical and/or horizontal load, uniformly distributed over a rectangular area, is presented in this part of the paper. The procedure proposed proves to be extremely efficient since the displacements can be found without numerical integration for this special loading pattern. Comparisons with solutions for rectangular loaded areas on Boussinesq- and Gibson-type soil show perfect agreement. In the case of the non-homogeneous half-space the procedure was checked using the method outlined in the first part of this paper revealing that both approaches come up with identical answers. Some results of a parametric study are presented for the surface displacements of a non-homogeneous half-space subject to vertical and horizontal loading. In this study both the material properties of the soil mass, i.e. Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio and the aspect ratio of the loading are varied. These results are presented in the form of influence charts which may readily be used in hand calculations for estimating the displacements of footings on a non-homogeneous soil. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: Wave propagation in granular materials is numerically studied through discrete element simulation. Two-dimensional (2-D) model material systems composed of large numbers of circular particles were numerically generated. The particles in these model materials were randomly distributed with a biasing algorithm to produce fabric anisotropy so as to create preferred directions within the material. Wave motion is introduced through dynamic loadings to appropriate boundary particles to produce horizontal and vertical plane wave propagation within each model material. Discrete element simulation with a non-linear hysteretic interparticle contact law is used to model the dynamic behaviour of the model granular systems, and this yields information on the wave speed and amplitude attenuation. Through the investigation of several model systems, relationships are established between wave propagational characteristics and granular microstructure or fabric. Specific fabric measures which were used included branch vectors, path microstructures and void characteristics. Distributions of these fabric descriptors were determined, and comparisons and correlations were made with the discrete element wave propagation results. Conclusions of this study indicated that while all three fabric measures provided some degree of correlation with the wave motion behaviours, the void fabric descriptor produced the best correlation for the assemblies under investigation. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: This paper deals with the propagation, reflection and transmission of shear waves in monoclinic media. The dispersion equation for a monoclinic layer overlying a monoclinic half-space has been obtained and curves are plotted. The amplitude ratios for both the reflected and transmitted waves due to reflection of shear waves at the interface of two monoclinic half-spaces have also been computed and the numerical results are presented graphically. The results are compared with the isotropic case. It has been observed that, in monoclinic media, the amplitude ratios for reflected and transmitted wave increases approximately by 25 and 50 per cent respectively, in comparison to the isotropic case. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: Estimation of elastoplastic deformation around an underground opening induced by the excavation of it, especially displacement and strain field in plastic region, is presented in this paper, as well as the formulation for calculating the displacement and strain in the plastic region around the underground opening by the coupled Boundary Element Method - Characteristics Method (BEM-CM). In this method, the non-associated flow rule is adopted to calculate the displacement and strain field in the plastic region, which is determined by the integration of the displacement along characteristics lines under the boundary condition of the elastic displacement on an elastoplastic interface analysed. It is shown that this method is one of the accurate and effective methods for estimating not only the shape and extent of the plastic region but also the state of the displacement and strain in the plastic region around the underground opening, comparing the theoretical solution with numerical results by this method for a circular opening under hydrostatic initial stress condition. Furthermore, this method is applied to rectangular and horse-shoe shaped openings and the characteristics of the strain field in the plastic region are discussed. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: This paper describes the computer algorithms used in a numerical simulation of the compression of an aggregate of crushable grains. It has been used in a model for the evolution of a granular medium under one-dimensional compression, in which the probability of fracture for individual particles is a function of applied stress, particle-size and co-ordination number. The information relating to the particles is represented in a compact way on the computer which allows the number of particles produced to become sufficiently large for satisfactory comparisons to be made with experimental data and which allows information, such as the positions and sizes of the particles, to be easily extracted.     Notes: Employing the simple iterative technique of adjusting the element positions using computed potentials to locate the free surface can lead to finite elements with large aspect ratios as the free surface drops towards the base of the mesh. In particular, free surface modelling of earth dams with base drains suffer from this problem. The paper suggests a number of steps which can be taken to alleviate mesh distortion problems and improve the numerical stability of the iterative finite element analysis. This leads to a mesh deformation algorithm which adjusts element widths in a simple fashion depending on the free surface height as the iterations proceed.     Notes: The proposed general analytical model describes the anisotropic, elasto-plastic, path-dependent, stress-strain-strength properties of inviscid saturated clays under undrained loading conditions. The model combines properties of isotropic and kinematic plasticity by introducing the concept of a field of plastic moduli which is defined in stress space by the relative configuration of yield surfaces. For any loading (or unloading) history, the instantaneous configuration is determined by calculating the translation and contraction (or expansion) of each yield surface. The stress-strain behaviour of clays can thus be determined for complex loading paths and in particular for cyclic loadings. The stress-strain relationships are provided for use in finite element analyses. The model parameters required to characterize the behaviour of any given clay can be derived entirely from conventional triaxial or simple shear soil test results. The model's extreme versatility is demonstrated by using it to formulate the behaviour of the Drammen clay under both monotonic and cyclic loading conditions. The parameters are determined by using solely the results from monotonic and cyclic strain-controlled simple shear experimental tests, and the model's accuracy is evaluated by applying it to predict the results of other tests such as (1) cyclic stress-controlled simple shear tests, (2) monotonic triaxial loading compression and unloading extension tests, and (3) cyclic stress- and strain-controlled triaxial tests on, this same clay. The theoretical predictions are found to agree extremely well with the experimental test results.

    Notes: The theory of variational inequalities enables us to formulate and solve free boundary problems in fixed domains, while most other methods assume the position of the unknown domain in solving the problem. Here the problem of seepage flow through a rectangular dam with a free boundary is formulated as a vertical inequality following the ideas of Baiocchi. In order to demonstrate the essential ideas of extending the domain of the solution of problems with free boundaries, the problem of the deflection, of a string on a rigid support is first examined. Next, variational inequalities are derived which are associated with several cases of seepage problems. An approximation theory, including a priori error estimates, is developed using finite element methods, and an associated numerical scheme is given. It is shown that for linear and quadratic finite element methods, the rates of convergence are 0(h) and 0(h1.25-δ), 0 〈 δ 〈 0.25, respectively, if the permeability is constant.

    Notes: The Polesine, a region in the northeast of Italy, has experienced considerable surface subsidence due to the withdrawal of water and gas from the underlying reservoir sediments. These settlements have been well documented and form the basis of a comparison study with a finite element consolidation model. It is shown that the model is capable of simulating the field behaviour during production and also after the closure of the wells.
